DIRECTOR’S NOTE
This play is about a terrible workplace. The place is absurdly terrible. And that’s just what you CAN see: grown men who can’t name feelings, outright bullying, threats of violence, harassment — sexual and gendered in nature. Offstage behaviors described as resembling a “Dutch horror movie” seem only barely hidden. So, we’ve added some touches in our production to bring that horror to light.
You can also see a well-meaning empathy coach, who is trying not to see certain problems in her life. Maybe you can see the way she becomes part of the problem, and how she finds her way back to herself.
But consider what you can’t see. What this place erases from your vision. Begin with the invisible woman at the conference table, and keep this in mind as the final scenes of this play reveal what was unseeable.
In an article published May 21 on Slate, titled Americans Don’t Lack Empathy, We Are Being Drained of It, Dahlia Lithwick observes that we err in hoping that people will come around to the suffering of “the other” because
“we are being trained every day in the opposite direction: We are being conditioned to unsee even those people for whom we felt some kinship a mere eight years ago…The weirdly urgent task lies in asking ourselves whether we have become unwitting accomplices in the imperceptible attempts to make some people unseeable… It’s something to which we are all susceptible, and against which we all must be on guard.”
Look for what you can’t see. Pay attention to what’s behind the curtain.
