he month of October delivered the busiest start to the boating season in the history of Marine Rescue NSW. Our volunteers

responded to a record-breaking 460 search and rescue missions, an increase of 19% on the same month last year. Across the four weeks, 989 people were safely returned to shore, equating to almost 32 people saved every day of the month.

search and rescue missions as more people take to the water to enjoy our beautiful coastline, rivers and lakes. While rescues occur throughout the year, the warmer months are consistently the busiest, with just over 70% of all rescues taking place between the start of October and the end of March.

My son’s friend is a boat mechanic and managed to get the motor started!”

Back on that fateful morning, Damien’s ordeal was far from over. Exhausted and freezing, he hauled himself onto the sharp rocks of Boandabah and desperately sought warmth. “I wasn’t keen on swimming across the channel. I was freezing and my feet were all cut up from the sharp rocks,” he said. “I dug a hole and covered myself in mud to try to keep warm.”

It was the volunteer crew on board Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage’s vessel LT 30, skippered by Deputy Unit Commander Brad Fuller, who eventually found Damien after an hour on the island.

“We immediately went to the island after a member of the public called through to say he’d seen an unmanned vessel full of water floating past and spotted an orange object on the island.

“Visibility was pretty poor,” Brad said. “Damien had been swamped by a sudden wave that just came up and sank his vessel. The water flows very fast there because it’s a narrow

neck, so he was very lucky he decided to swim to the island and not try to swim to shore — he may have been washed away.”

The rescue crew threw Damien a lifering, hauled him safely on board and checked his welfare. Other than being cold and cut up from the rocks, he was uninjured. Back at the ramp, Susannah rushed to embrace her husband. “Relief,” she said of that moment. “I had actually thought it might be a different outcome. I just gave him a big hug and told him I love him.”

The grateful couple then shouted the rescue crew bacon and egg rolls and coffees. “The volunteers did an amazing job. I’m very grateful for the service they provide,” Damien said.

As for Susannah, she has put her foot down about future trips.

“He has to Log On every time he goes out, I’m enforcing it!” she said firmly.

Lord Howe 40 was the ideal vessel for the mission

hirty-six hours after Marine Rescue Lord Howe Island volunteers first became concerned about a yacht

travelling from Sydney to Lord Howe Island, two exhausted sailors were returned safely to shore following a gruelling experience in extremely challenging conditions.

We were operating in absolute pitch black. The kind of dark that makes you forget which way is up.

The stars were extraordinary. But there’s no horizon in starlight. No frame of reference. Just the swell, the spray, and the steady thump of the Yanmar turbo-diesel engines.

I was in the forward port seat, keeping a lookout, shouting “Wave!” each time a big one reared up. At Howard’s request,

I adjusted settings on the helm—dimming navigation settings,

tossed us like dice in a cup.

Andy and I moved to the rear deck. Harnessed in, lights on, soaked within seconds from the spray. When Andy reached into the locker to grab torches and tethers, a lurch of the boat slammed the drawer shut on his fingers. A rough start to what would become an even rougher 20 minutes.

Howard positioned us a few hundred metres off the disabled vessel. The process began: tow line to soft shackle, to sacrificial, to heaving line. Andy was the thrower. I was there to hold him— literally. Even though we were tethered, I grabbed his harness, reassuring him, “I’ve got you, mate.”

The deck lit up on the disabled vessel. One crew member crouched precariously on the bow, waiting. “Make it count,” Howard called over the comms. “We’ve got one shot.”

But the approach was too wide—the sea bucking us just out of reach. A miss.

Howard peeled us off. Reset.

This is when PS 31 stopped feeling like a 12-tonne rescue vessel and started feeling like a cork bobbing in the middle of a black ocean. The disabled vessel’s deck lights shrank to specks.

We couldn’t see land. Couldn’t orient. Only our blue and red strobe lights flickering off whitecaps gave us some sense of where we were.

The Yanmars roared. From where Andy and I stood directly above them, we could feel their heat and fury. Then I looked aft— and saw it.

He pulled me up and said, “Just remember—you volunteered for this.” And grinned. Of course, somehow, his shoes were still dry.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector John Murray said the skipper of a 5 to 6-metre runabout contacted Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour radio operators in the early evening after his vessel suffered a complete electrical failure.

“The two men were stranded 8 nautical miles (15 km) east of Bundagen.

“A volunteer crew from Marine Rescue Woolgoolga was immediately deployed on board Woolgoolga 30 to assist the stricken vessel, with the Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour boat offline for refurbishment works,” Inspector Murray said.

Woolgoolga 30 skipper Mitch Harvey said sea conditions were fair en route to the disabled vessel, but he and his crew had to keep a close watch for migrating whales.

“It was pitch black and there were dozens of whales.

“We ended up travelling further south than expected, with the disabled vessel drifting 3 nautical miles from its initial reported position.

“We located the vessel just after 8pm. The crew on board used a torch to signal their location as they had no power,” Harvey said.

“

Conditions deteriorated on the return leg, with gusty winds and two-metre seas. It was a slow trip back. I was watching the radar very closely for whales on the surface — they were scattered everywhere, Harvey said.

“

The two fishermen and their disabled vessel were safely returned to the Coffs Harbour boat ramp at 10:30pm, before the Woolgoolga 30 crew returned to base.

“Because of the number of whales in the water and the challenging conditions, we travelled back to Arrawarra at just over 10 knots and didn’t return to base until just after 12:30am,” Harvey said.

Inspector Murray reminded boaters to take extra caution during whale migration season.

“When whales are present, boaters must not come within 100 metres of a whale, or 300 metres of a whale and calf.

“If a whale surfaces near your vessel, it is important to cut your motors and reduce to a safe speed,” he said.

A towline was secured to the disabled vessel for the return to Coffs Harbour.

While the rescue ended safely, it highlights the risks of poor preparation. “This incident shows how an enjoyable day on the water can turn dangerous,” Inspector Massey warned. Reed agreed: “The EPIRB activation was critical. Without it, the vessel would not have been found that night, and the young men on board would have endured a cold, uncomfortable night at sea with no guarantee of being located the next day.”

The plan was to return to Rose Bay ramp, considered the nearest safe landing point. Hours later, however, the families of the stranded boaters informed Marine Rescue Sydney that their vehicle and trailer was at Roseville Boat Ramp. With fatigue mounting after hours at sea, Reed’s crew handed the tow to Marine Area Command near Grotto Point just after 11pm. Water Police completed the tow to Roseville, while MH 30 returned to base,

t was a lucky escape for a solo boater whose vessel caught fire in late August.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Glenn Sullivan said a volunteer

crew from Marine Rescue Shoalhaven observed an 11–12 metre sailing vessel ablaze while patrolling the Shoalhaven River.

“The crew on board SA 30 instructed the person on the distressed vessel to evacuate.

“The lone sailor jumped overboard and was safely retrieved from the water by the SA 30 crew.

“The sailor was suffering from smoke inhalation and suspected

Ambulance paramedics,” Inspector Sullivan said.

With flames continuing to engulf the vessel, firefighters from the local NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) brigade were contacted to assist.

“Once the boater was safely ashore, the SA 30 crew collected local RFS firefighters and a portable water pump.

“The firefighters were ferried to the vessel and extinguished the blaze.

“NSW RFS crews then placed booms around the vessel to contain any contaminants from the fire,” Inspector Sullivan said.

“We are focused on growing the female membership at Marine Rescue NSW and encourage women to volunteer and help our mission of saving lives on the water.

“Future volunteers need no prior experience — we provide full, free training. With 46 units across the state, there are opportunities for new female members in a variety of roles, including vessel crew and radio operations,” he said.

Hunting the raft As in the real world, the information wasn’t perfect. The coordinates were deliberately inaccurate and required vessel crews to prompt the radio operators for the time of sighting. It was two hours old. The life raft had no doubt drifted a couple of nautical miles, so when three-zero arrived at the last known position, nothing was there.

But a little luck — and good practice — came into play.

Acting skippers Dave Frewin and Gavin Newbound, on threezero and two-one respectively, had posted lookouts long before reaching the last known position; and while three-zero began a drift test, two-one ran a quick expanding square.

Minutes later: “Three-zero, this is two-one. We can see something to our south-east — going to investigate.”

Through binoculars — and this is what surprised me most — the raft was nothing more than a long, low, dark smudge against the swell. No bright canopy. No vivid colours at all. It looked more like an oyster punt in the undulating sea.

The radio crackled again: “Three-zero, this is two-one.

We have located the life raft.”

Rescue in motion Three-zero roared into life. By the time we reached the raft, two-one had already transferred a crew member to begin first aid. Around this time, we also became aware of other “missing casualties” who had never made it to the raft — that explained the lifejackets the jet skis were retrieving.

Despite locating the raft, the challenge was far from over. In the water was the raft’s drogue, posing a major entanglement risk when trying to get close. The swell Volunteers perform first-aid

“At sea, we don’t have doctors and nurses. We are the doctors and nurses, so the team has to be 100% on their first aid,” said Unit Commander Davies.

The crews persevered. Challenges were met with solutions, and eventually all patients had been transferred to vessels and stabilised for the journey to an “awaiting ambulance”.

Invaluable lessons Exercises like this are invaluable for our teams. They expose gaps, highlight strengths, and prepare crews for the chaos of the real thing. Radios, search patterns, lookouts, casualty handling, first aid — all of it is tested under pressure.

And that’s the point. Perfect conditions never exist in reality.

When the call comes for real, the seas will be rougher, the information older, and the risks sharper. What matters is that crews know how to adapt, problem-solve, and work the scenario.

arine Rescue NSW has honoured one of its longest-serving volunteers, Ian

Baker ESM, who has reached the extraordinary milestone of 50 years of service to the boating community.

Baker, a highly respected Coxswain and Search and Rescue Support Officer with Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking, is one of only a handful of volunteers in the organisation’s history to achieve this exceptional milestone.

On the first day of spring, the 83-year-old was presented with the Marine Rescue NSW 50-year service pin during a ceremony at the unit’s Hungry Point base.

I am a competitive Masters swimmer, training several times a week at the pool and joining a weekly ocean swim with my local surf club. Most recently, I travelled to Singapore for the World Masters Swimming Championships, where I was thrilled to place fifth in my age group in the backstroke events.

His service was recently recognised with a Unit Commander’s Citation, presented in honour of his extraordinary contribution to safety on the water over nearly two decades.

“Peter’s dedication is the kind that doesn’t seek recognition, but deserves it more than most,” said Unit Commander Ben van der Wijngaart.

Bliss summed up the unique perks of the night shift at Marine Rescue Port Stephens with his usual wit.

“The radio room at 2am can be a serious place — but at least no one’s around to judge how many biscuits you’ve eaten,” he joked.

“It’s been a great experience, this unit is one big family, and I’ll miss them,” he said.

Bliss has left the door open to resume volunteering with unit in the future.

“They are such a great group of people at Marine Rescue Port Stephens, I may return in some capacity but first let’s get the move done and settle into our new life,” he said.

he 2025 Sydney to Nouméa race didn’t end how anyone planned. Three yachts started. None finished.

When the go-time finally arrived, it was all business.

Our crew that night on PS 31 felt like a premiership line-up.

Duty Skipper Mick Duggan was steady as stone — fresh back from holidays, seated at the chart plotter, spotlight in hand, with a full playbook already written in his head.

Robert Stewart — Coxswain, calm under pressure, always exactly where you need him — was stationed next to the helm, wiping condensation from the windscreen… or sweat from Mick O’Rourke’s brow, depending on the stage of the docking.

Tony Baker, as experienced as they come, had the fenders set just right for the bulging belly of a 46-foot ocean racer. Quietly effective. Unflappable. You trust Tony with a line because you know it’ll be done right before you even look.

Mick O was at the helm — steady, watchful, and ready. He didn’t ask for the job. Didn’t flinch either.

“Mick O’Rourke — you’re driving tonight. Rob, keep an eye on him,” came the call from Duggan.

O’Rourke gave the briefest lift of his eyes. Me? Driving? At night? With two coxswains on board?

But Duggan had already made the decision. He wasn’t bluffing confidence — he was orchestrating it.

And now it was clear: Duggan wanted to be on the bow when we docked. Because that’s where he needed to be.

At the bow. In the dark. Calling shots. And, maybe, keeping an eye on the less-experienced crew member beside him. Me. PS 31 isn’t built for visibility when you’re nudging a racing yacht sideways into a tight marina berth, port side on, with no moon and no room for error.

From the bow, Duggan could see the line. Could feel the swing. Could read the angle. He could also give me a quiet hand when the line configuration turned out to be something we don’t drill for. We train for scenarios. But most real jobs? They’re improvisation.

Ten minutes after leaving the berth, we had her in sight. Llama II, just off Fly Point. Dead calm water. Shore lights casting long silver shadows across the bay.

This was no pleasure cruiser. She was all racer. All muscle.

All intent. And she had ten very experienced sailors on deck — fenders rigged, lines ready, good humour flowing.

Still, the moment we arrived, they deferred. They knew the game had changed. The last nautical mile now belonged to us. redrawn.

And that’s where we came in.

The call didn’t come at 2:28pm. Not for me, anyway. It came for our radio operators at base, dutifully manning the shore station on a Sunday afternoon.

arine Rescue Alpine Lakes has strengthened its IT and security systems thanks to a grant from Snowy Hydro’s

Community Grants Programme.

Unit Commander Cain Hopwood thanked Snowy Hydro for its support, and said the funding has delivered vital improvements at the unit’s base.

“Snowy Hydro’s generosity has enabled important upgrades at our Lake Jindabyne base, including the supply and installation of a wireless NBN connection with a Wi-Fi hub in the shed, a security camera system inside and outside the building, cameras on the boat ramp and lake, and a contribution towards NBN connection fees.”

Unit Commander Hopwood said the new cameras enhance the unit’s security, helping ensure essential facilities remain available during emergencies.

“The Wi-Fi network also allows Marine Rescue Alpine Lakes volunteers to access online training materials and complete radio examinations, which form part of crew accreditation. This technology strengthens our search and rescue capacity and improves safety and awareness for locals and visitors.

“In the future, we hope to provide the community with access to webcam footage on personal devices, so they can check lake conditions before heading out, further enhancing safety on the Alpine waters,” he said.

When people weren’t listening to talks, they were busy getting their hands on the gear and skills that keep us alive at sea. Small kids and not-so-small kids queued up to tie knots, haul pulleys, and test their aim throwing a heaving line at “Bob”, our everpatient rescue manikin. The lucky ones walked away with pirate showbags and even bigger grins.

Of course, an open day isn’t complete without tours. Our boats and radio base saw a steady stream of visitors, guided by crew such as Maggie Holst and Lilly De Belle, who fielded non-stop questions about what each piece of kit does. The excitement was genuine; people love seeing the tools of the job up close.

To help expand the impact of the event, Marine Rescue Port Macquarie partnered with several local organisations. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service brought their practice whale tail, a three-metre contraption that had passers-by stopping in their tracks. Maritime NSW set up a stall of radios, lifejackets, and flares and fielded boating safety questions. Newman Senior Technical College brought a marine science exhibit on plastics in waterways, along with real specimens of marine life, which was a hit with families. This partnership was a valuable take-away and is sure to grow with future events.

This event wasn’t just fun; it was about building community understanding of what Marine Rescue NSW does, and why. The public walked away knowing that rescues aren’t about luck or brute strength, they’re the result of training, equipment, and the science that underpins it all.

Marine Rescue Port Macquarie is grateful for the support of Inspiring Australia for the funding that made the event possible.
