GET GOLFING

The world-famous Royal County Down Golf course is a stone’s throw from the hotel and voted Number 1 in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022’s World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses by Golf Digest. What a way to start the day! Or visit Ardglass Golf Club, home of the world’s oldest clubhouse for a round or two. It’s just 30 minutes’ drive from the hotel.

RAMBLING IN THE MOURNES AND SURROUNDING AREA

Depending on your group’s energy levels, our local guides offer everything from an introduction to forests and fells or a gentle tour of upland trails, to a mountain adventure including summiting the highest peak, Slieve Donard, in Northern Ireland. Mild to wild - wear good walking boots!

CULTURE DOWN CATHEDRAL AND SAINT PATRICK’S GRAVE

Brush up on local history with a visit to this spiritually important site, where Saint Patrick’s remains are buried. Magnificent stained glass windows, box pews and one of the finest pipe organs in the British Isles are all highlights. (Guided tours are available.)

HILLSBOROUGH CASTLE AND GARDENS

Northern Ireland’s magnificent royal residence has plenty to see and do. Tour the castle and learn about its history, experience the beautiful gardens or stop for a bite to eat in their award-winning restaurant.

CASTLE WARD

This 18th-century National Trust property is an architectural enigma, featuring both gothic and classical styling. It overlooks Strangford Lough and includes 332 hectares (820 acres) of landscaped gardens, a fortified tower house, Victorian laundry, theatre, sawmill and a working corn mill. Oh, and its farmyard also featured in Game of Thrones.

OUTDOOR Pursuits

MOURNE TRAILS AND ALES TOUR

Get on your bike (electric) and ride through the foothills of the Mountains of Mourne, taking in the stunning sights, sounds and history of Castlewellan Forest Park and the Annesley Estate. The tour concludes with a visit to the Whitewater Brewery, where a delectable selection of local craft beers and food specialities await.

CASTLEWELLAN FOREST PARK AND PEACE MAZE

Take a leisurely walk and experience one of the most outstanding tree and shrub collections in Europe, which attracts visitors from far and wide with its incredible specimens. For the more adventurous, Paddle Boarding, Canoeing or Kayaking is available on the sheltered waters of Castlewellan Lake.

MURLOUGH NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE

Simply enjoy the golden stretch of beach outside the hotel that takes you from Newcastle to where you can enjoy wildlife, ponies and walk the dunes.
