Allman Newest School Board Member

The Mariemont Board of Education has appointed Thomas Y Allman to fill the vacancy created when Arnold Morelli resigned from the board for business and personal reasons. Mr. Allman , who is 37 and a native of Canton , Ohio , came to Cincinnati in 1957 to attend the University of Cincinnati. While attending UC as a co-op student, he met his wife, Marty, who is a native of Cincinnati. After graduating from UC in 1962 with a degree in Indus trial Management, he decided to study law and was accepted at Yale Law School, graduating in 1965 He then returned to Cincinnati to join the law firm of Taft, Stettin1us and Hollister , becoming a partner in 1972

It was i n 1965 that the Allmans became residents of Mariemont. In fact, Marty had been interv iewed and accepted to teach in t he Mariemont schools However , th i s nev er be came a rea lity as she became pregnant wi t h t heir fi rs t child They first rented an apa rtment in Mariemont , then su bsequently bought tw o houses. There was an article in last week's paper about a family in Terrace Park who is moving to Alaska to esc ape! the cold, perhaps? Even i n this f rigid we athe r, new neighbors are movin g into Mariemont. Some from ju st across the street , and some from across the country.

Gerry and Donna Remme, along with daughters Chris and Nancy, have recently moved into· 6808 Hammerstone Perhaps the " grass is alwaxs greener on the other side" -or 1f it isn't Gerry will be sure it is by the Spring

Other neighbors who have ch ange d their address are the Hunters. Tom and Debby have mov ed into a lov ely home at 6831 Mt. Vernon. With their busy sch edu le , it's a wonder they are able to be so settled in such a short time , but they have had pl enty of help from David, Jerry , and Libby.

Kathy and Mike Rubery had the dubio us pleasure of moving into 6717 Hammerstone during a snow storm The only advantage in that situation would be that anything you dropped couldn't possibly break 1 The Ruberys are origin ally from Rochester, N.Y ., but moved to Mariemont with their children Becky , who is 4 ½ and Matthew , who is 2½ from Milford

It mu st have been a surprise when the Shorts moved from Atlanta to Cincinnati and found us un der 12" of snow. Doug, who is with Great American Ins urance an d Ma rgaret , who is a retired el ementar y teacher , are now livin g at 6998 Murray St. Staying with the m for a time is their son Ch arles , who just finished graduate school at the University of Georg ia.

All I could think of when I spoke with Ne il Thelen was " My Three Sons " Neil and his sons Scott , Mark , and John have moved from Terrace Park to 4301 Joan Place.

We do have some othe r new peopl e in Mariemont, but this time it's little people we're talking about. First on the scene was Stacy Ellen Petricone. Stacy is the first daughter for Kit and Jim Petricone who live at 6986 Grace . She was born on Oct. 27.

Jeffrey and Em iko Mesmer also hav e a new daughter , Mikako was born on Dec. 17. She is sure to be a delight to her brothers Nathan and Eth an

Alisa Erin Devlin was a 'little late for Chr istmas , but I'm sure Chris and Wendy coul dn 't have receiv ed a nicer present. Alisa was born on Dec. 29 and is now at home with her Mom waiting for nice weather so that she can meet all her neighbors on Hiawatha

Our congratulations to two of our nei ghbors who were recently married. Robert Beresford and Sheila Rice were marri ed Dec 19 in Bellamine Chapel on the campus of Xavier University. Rob ert is the son of Mr and Mrs Richard Beresfo rd.

Kathy Fields and Rod Painter were married on Dec. 4 in the Mo ntgomery Road Church of Ch rist. Kathy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fields.

We start the memories moving in t his issue with a story from Wi lliam " Oink " Averill's boyhood " We had a stray cat at the Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp near Brooklyn Bridge , Kentucky. The cat hung around the ten t s and especially the kitchen tents at mealtime

One day , we had a · hard thunderstorm and found it was hard to keep our footing on the wet, slick clay which surrounded our tents on the hillside . In f act , one of th e scouts on the heavy side lost his footing and sat down directl y on the cat and knocked it out. We all agre ed that cat had lost its ninth life , so we t ied a half br ick to it s ta il and threw him and the brick into the Kentucky River

Well , would you believe this ? The shock of t he cold water revived the cat and he was able to swim to the bank with the brick on his tail. His nose was only a fourth

"It gave us great pleasure at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital to see the · article 'New Things Have Happened at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital , page 6 of the Marie· mont Town Crier, December 1976 issue. It made us feel clo se to the village to have our "happenings" reported in its paper.

"If Mary Emery walked our halls today she would be bound to be pleased with the imm aculate cleanliness of the hospital, the tasteful decor which has evolved over the years , and the aura of caring which prevails."

"And since we ' re neighbors to all the folks in the village, why not come up and get acquainted-

not as a patient, when you're too ~ick to care, but now, in groups I d be happy to arrange tours and be so pleased to personally show you ;irnund."

With thanks from all of us up at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital for the article and Best Wishes for the New Year, I remain , Sincerely yours, Alice K. Carnes, Director Community Relations Dept. Our Lady of Mercy Hospital (Edi tor ' s note) Thank you , Alice Carnes , for your delightful letter. The article was researched and written by Rachel Hubbard.

Talent Swap

Mariemont is a community of people with varied talents and needs. Why not use the Town Crier as a means of letting fe llow Mariemonters learn of these?

Perhaps you are a Senior citizen who needs a weekly ride to the grocery store or library. There would be many willing chauffeurs if your needs were made known. Are you a retired school teacher who would like to do some tutoring 7

Teenagers - maybe you are interested in yard work or child care . Seamstresses , you might be interested in doing alterations for non -se wers.

Re-doing your child ' s , room? Perhaps if you let the Town Crier know you would find that special artist to paint a mural on a troublesome wall.

These are just a few ideas for a want -ad column of the Town Crier Contact the editors with your specific ideas for nex t month's issue. A few people contacting us could get the ball rolling.

How Does Your Garden Grow ?

With all this snow and these sub-zero temperatu res, many of us are trying to keep our "c abin fever" down with those glorious harbingers of spr ing , the flower and seed catalogues. And wh il e refle ct ing on the beauty of spring and planning our flower ana vegetab le gardens, it's a good t im e t o talk about the lo vely plant ings in our unique village

Obviously someone planted all those daffodils , rose bushes , cherry trees , etc ., that help jn maki ng ours a truly beautiful town

Much of this beauty has been brought to us by Mother Nature ably assisted by the good women of the Mariemont Garden Club The cl ub , which meets the fi rst Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. at the Parish Center , is 36 ye ars old. Many of its ori gin al members are still partIcI pating in the club's activities. There are 24 members and eight ass ociate mem ber s. Mrs. Gerald Fen ker is president.

The club still support s financi all y many gardening pro jects in the Village. ln 1976 it pa id for

replacement of two trees on the square and two cherry trees in front of the Church , among other good works However , many of the members now limit their gardening to their own homes

The Village has benefited so much from the club's work . The other group of avid gardene rs in town is the Mariemont Ev ening Gardening Club. This organization was founded in 19 49 and meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p m at the Parish Center Mrs Alvin Bredemeyer is president. It has 24 mem bers The club ' s go als are: conservation of our natural resources; encourag in g community pride and awareness ; the indiv idual goal of expertise in gardening

The club participates in a great number of community proJects , such as the Memorial Grove at the High School, is a member of th e Federated Garden Clubs and generally offers a helping hand to any other civic organi zation that asks for or needs its help.

There were many items about th e " new community " and the bank we know as Central Trust today , lo cated at Wooster Pike and Madisonv ill e Rd The first bank

The Mar ie mont Bugle has fallen by the wayside but the village that welcomed it back in 1925 has become , in words from a poem published therein , " Mariemont the beautiful , a city truly blest. "

Dick Heena, current manager of the Central Trust Mariemont Branch Bank, provided the Town Crier with a copy of this original " Bugle ."
