We have a unique and extraordinary opportunity. The redevelopment of the Mill Lane site – immediately next door to the medieval College – is the most important advance for Pembroke since its foundation in 1347. Pembroke has long been a place where knowledge, discovery, creativity, learning and innovation have thrived. The exchange of ideas, the chance encounters and conversations, the inspiration from outstanding teaching, the friends made for life: this is a remarkable place, and we have the chance now to make it even better.

Mill Lane will enlarge Pembroke’s footprint in the heart of Cambridge by a third. But the development is about much more than new buildings and enhanced facilities. It is about the lives and opportunities for future generations of students, researchers and Fellows, and the way they can be transformed.

Many Pembroke members and supporters have already been incredibly generous, not least the family of Ray Dolby whose £35 million donation has enabled us to embark on our plans. The family’s renewed generosity has now provided a pound-for-pound match-funding pledge for everything we raise for Mill Lane until the end of 2022. Let us seize this opportunity to transform Pembroke for future generations.

PEMBROKE IS A PLACE WHERE GENERATIONS OF CREATIVE PEOPLE HAVE UNLOCKED THEIR POTENTIAL.

Mill Lane will significantly enhance the cultural life of Pembroke and of Cambridge as a whole. A 230-seat auditorium will be created within the former Emmanuel United Reformed Church, hosting lectures, talks, concerts and other performances, many of which will be open to the wider public.

A new gallery will enable the College to display its many treasures and collections, alongside exhibitions featuring collections from other institutions and academic work by our current students and Fellows.

THE COMMUNITY IS WHAT MAKES PEMBROKE SPECIAL AND MILL LANE WILL MAKE IT MORE SO. A new café-bar in the elegant central Mill Lane building, Stuart House, will complement the Parlours, Servery and Hall on the medieval site.

A large multi-purpose foyer alongside the auditorium will act as a busy gathering space during high capacity events and performances, as well as a daytime study, meeting and display area. It will become a hub of activity.

Several spaces on the Mill Lane site will have wellness and good mental health at their heart.We will help our students strengthen their resilience and find quietness away from their busy academic lives.

PARTNERSHIP A PLACE FOR

THE MILL LANE DEVELOPMENT PROVIDES NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEMBROKE PEOPLE TO MAKE CONNECTIONS, BOTH WITH THE WORLD OUTSIDE AND WITH EACH OTHER. A Learning Centre will enable school students to visit us and to experience a taste of university life in one of the most welcoming colleges in Cambridge. A Partnership Centre based in Stuart House will attract scholars and corporate partners to work together and create new ideas in their fields.

A PLACE TO CALL THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND IDENTITY FOSTERED BY LIVING AND WORKING TOGETHER AROUND A COLLEGE COURT REMAINS UNRIVALLED. This Campaign will enable Pembroke to provide – at last – truly outstanding accommodation for all our undergraduate and graduate students who wish to live in College.

In the new Ray and Dagmar Dolby Court, 90 new study bedrooms – all at least 18m2 and most en-suite – will be built. They will be set around a beautiful courtyard, and will provide accommodation for both graduate students and undergraduates, helping to bring graduates closer to the heart of the Pembroke community. A further 20 rooms will be made available for accommodation on the medieval site as administrative offices move to Mill Lane.
