BUS TRANSPORTATION Discounted rate Valley Metro Bus cards are available for students who meet the defined need-based criteria. Criteria and applications are available from Business Services located within Student Services.
COUNSELING, DISABILITY & RESOURCE SERVICES Identifies social service resources throughout the Phoenix community and connects students with support services to address crises that both current and prospective students may face. Students can also acquire assistance under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure success in their training program.
GED PREPARATION In partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County (LVMC), MSC offers on-site GED preparation classes. LVMC classes are at low or no cost to MSC students and members of the community. To participate, contact the Essential Skills Department in person or by phone at 602-238-0023.
SOFT SKILLS This component of each program focuses on the non-technical skills that round out a student’s training. Primary topics discussed include: communication, conflict management, diversity, ethics, teamwork, time management, professional behavior and values. Each area is critical to producing more employable students.

WORKFORCE CENTER Workforce Development staff within the Workforce Center integrate finding employment for students with employers’ needs. By interviewing and assessing both graduates and employers, candidates are prepared to complete successful interviews and attain employment upon graduation. 3

1. GATHER THE INFORMATION REQUIRED TO APPLY Your Social Security Number (SSN) and parents’ SSNs if you are providing parent information. Your Driver’s License number if you have one. Your Alien Registration Number if you are not a U.S. Citizen. 2012 Federal tax information or tax returns, including W-2 information for yourself, your spouse if you have one, and for your parents if you are providing parent information, using income records for the year prior to the academic year for which you are applying. Example: The 2013/2014 academic year includes aid from July 1st, 2013 to June 30th, 2014. Records of untaxed income, such as social Security Benefits, SNAP, and Veterans benefits, for yourself (and for your parents if you are providing parent information).
2. APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov to apply. Obtain a PIN from the website. Use Maricopa Skill Center’s school code: E00701. Follow up on your FAFSA 7-10 days after submitting your application. Check your ‘To Do List’ at my.maricopa.edu. Review the Estimated Financial Aid (EFA) form. Take signed EFA to Business Services Take signed clearance from Business Services to Enrollment Services. 18
Once enrolled, check your student email accounts to get news and updates regarding student information and financial assistance.
3. FOLLOW UP ON YOUR FAFSA To check on your status: Visit http://my.maricopa.edu. On this site you may see which documents are still needed to process your financial aid and update your contact information. Common reasons why we may not receive a FAFSA are: if the FAFSA aid year completed is wrong, if the FAFSA is not completed fully or is not signed, or if our school code is not included. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up on financial aid.
4. RECEIVE YOUR STUDENT AID REPORT When your FAFSA is completed fully with all required documentation, your application will be processed and you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) by e-mail or mail. Make sure to review your SAR for any corrections or updates that may be needed. If you do not receive the SAR within three weeks of completion, you may go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and select “Check the Status of a Submitted FAFSA” or call 1-800-433-3243 for information.
Q: WHEN CAN I GET STARTED? A: Most programs start on a weekly basis. Once you know which program you want to take, contact Enrollment Services at 602-238-4350 to start the registration process and receive your start date. Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FINISH A PROGRAM? A: All MSC programs, excluding Health Care, are self-paced, which means you can move through a program at a speed that is convenient for you. Of course, our goal is to get you the training you need in less than a year; however, we recognize there are a variety of reasons a student may go at a different pace than others. Q: DO I NEED A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR GED TO GET STARTED? A: No. You do not need a high school diploma or GED to get started at MSC. However, effective July 1, 2012, changes in federal funding require students to have a high school diploma or GED in order to receive federal funding. If you do not have your high school diploma or GED, we can help. Through a partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County (LVMC), MSC now offers free GED Workshops to current and potential students. Q: HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO START SCHOOL? A: Many employers who hire our graduates require employees to be 18 years or older. Depending on the program, students need to be at least 17 years old to ensure they are eligible for hire upon graduation. If you have a question about your status, contact us at 602-238-4301. Janet Holiday Ophthalmic Assistant (Student)
Janet Holiday wanted to find a career path to provide her with a brighter future. With the Ophthalmic Assistant program at Maricopa Skill Center, Janet enjoys the classroom atmoshpere and learning at a steady pace. “The information we learn builds a foundation concept by concept. The knowledge base and the technical skills help us build confidence in pursuing a successful career,” Janet said. “The classroom experience and the internship will better prepare me to be employed as an Ophthalmic Assistant.”
Adam Clark Rough Carpentry Framer (Student)
Adam Clark wanted to find a program where he could advance his carpentry skill level and become a journeyman. Luckily, he found the Rough Carpentry Framer program at Maricopa Skill Center. “I like how we’re able to instantly pick up a saw and begin trimming wood platforms,” Adam said. “I think by having both knowledge in theory and in hands-on training, I am able to become successful in my work performance.” Adam plans to find work as a journeyman, a master carpenter, and eventually a contractor. 20
Alvaro Soto Computer Support Specialist (Student) After retiring in 2008 from the United States Navy, Alvaro Soto spent four years searching for the right school in computer technology. He came upon Maricopa Skill Center’s Computer Support Specialist program and thought he made the best choice. “We’re able to work at our own pace to fulfill the requirements,” Alvaro mentioned. “Hands-on training is so much better and we’re able to utilize the tools provided to get a better understanding.” Alvaro plans to apply for a position as a Technical Support Representative in Customer Service.
Shawn Jackson Welding (Student) Shawn Jackson is a Veteran of the United States Navy. After being in the military for so long, he thought it was a great decision to develop another skill by enrolling into the Welding program at Maricopa Skill Center. “Since Welding is in such high demand, I feel like I’ve made the right decision,” Shawn added. “The program is 95% hands-on and anytime there’s a question I need to ask, the instructors are always there to help.” Upon graduation, Shawn plans to apply for a Welding position in the Valley.
