Thank you for joining the Maricopa Health Foundation today as we celebrate four of the accomplished female leaders and educators at Maricopa Integrated Health System, soon-to-be Valleywise Health ? the Valley?s public teaching hospital and community health system.

They represent the nearly 4,000 physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and other MIH S employees whose mission is to provide exceptional care, without exception, to every patient, every time.

In addition to the important roles they play in the board room, operating room, emergency department, and community health clinic ? they are daughters, wives, fiancĂŠes, mothers, aunts and sisters too.

They lead and teach new doctors, nurses and allied health professionals ? while managing busy and full personal lives as well.

A few things we?ll learn ?

What inspired their dreams and who mentored them along the way?

What hurdles and challenges did they conquer and overcome?

What lessons were they taught by women in their lives?

What do they tell young women exploring a science or medical career?

How do we help our daughters, sisters, granddaughters, nieces and ourselves ? advocate for our health in today?s complex world.

We?ll learn how MIH S, the Valley?s public teaching hospital and safety net health system, has found innovative solutions to address Arizona?s health provider shortage, and its important role in the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance.

As a retired Registered Nurse, and someone who used the community health system as a young married couple and when our children were small ? I hope you?ll leave today with a better understanding of why I?m passionate about supporting those called to serve and teach at our safety-net health system for ALL. On behalf of my fellow Maricopa Health Foundation board members and co-hosts of today?s Bridge to Hope Women?s Luncheon, Anne McNamara and Jill Krigsten Riley, we?d like to thank you for spending your valuable time with us.

A very special thank you to table hostesses April Halaby, Roselyn Meyer, Ann Stupp, Lisa Hartsock, Joette Schmidt, Michele Neal, Kate Hollist and Marcia Scott for helping us spread the word about this jewel in our Valley. About MIHS Maricopa Integrated Health System (soon to be Valleywise Health) is a public teaching hospital and safety net health care system that has served the greater Phoenix area for more than 143 years.

MIH S operates one of Arizona's longest running and largest physician training programs, with 13 Graduate Medical Education programs ranging from emergency medicine to adult and child psychiatry, now under the umbrella of the Creighton University-Arizona Health Education Alliance.

The Creighton University-Arizona Health Education Alliance oversees the Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs for two of the Valley's largest healthcare institutions - Valleywise Health and Dignity Health St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, as well as the program for District Medical Group.

Kris Gaw became Chief Operating Officer of MIH S in March 2016. MIH S is Arizona?s only public healthcare system and Maricopa County?s largest training center of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. MIH S includes the Maricopa Medical Center, the Arizona Burn Center, the Arizona Children?s Center, a Level I Trauma Center, three behavioral health centers and a network of 13 neighborhood clinics that serve the entire county.

Ms. Gaw has been honored by Modern Healthcare as one of the nation?s Top 25 COOs in Healthcare (2017); Becker?s Hospital Review Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know (2016, 2017 and 2018); Phoenix Business Journal?s Outstanding Women in Business (2017); and AZ Big Media?s Most Influential Women in Arizona (2018).

Prior to joining MIH S, Ms. Gaw served as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer ? Hospital Operations for Parkland Hospital and Health System in Dallas, Texas, one of the largest public health systems in the country. At Parkland, Ms. Gaw was responsible for overseeing daily hospital operations as well as system wide ancillary and support services and the completion of their $1.4 billion 2.1 million square feet hospital in 2015. She served as Executive Lead for the successful movement of 626 patients from existing to new hospital via a 923-foot $25 million bridge over a two-day period.

From 2008 to 2014, Ms. Gaw served as Chief Operating Officer at Renown Regional Medical Center, an 808-bed tertiary care facility and Level II Trauma Center in Reno, Nevada, that provides services that span over an 80,000-mileradius from Sacramento to Salt Lake City. Renown Regional is home to the area?s only Children?s Hospital, with the region?s only children?s emergency room. From 2002 to 2008, Ms. Gaw was Vice President of Human Resources at Renown Health, northern Nevada?s largest integrated health network, with more than 6,000 employees. From 1995 to 2001, Ms. Gaw was Director of Customer Service for Hometown Health, the insurance division of Renown Health.

Ms. Gaw received both a bachelor?s and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. She is a member of American College of Healthcare Executives and is a certified leader.

Ms. Gaw also is the proud Mom of a beautiful daughter who has recently graduated from nursing school here in the valley. She will be working as an Emergency Room RN at a local hospital.

Elizabeth M.N. Ferguson MD, FACS District Medical Group (DMG) Maricopa Integrated Health System

Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Elizabeth Ferguson graduated from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN with a degree in chemistry before attending the University of Minnesota Medical School. She completed residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and is double-board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Her clinical focus is on restorative and reconstructive breast surgery, though her practice covers the entire spectrum of plastic surgery.

Dr. Ferguson is the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and an assistant professor at Creighton University School of Medicine. She serves as the Alliance Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance, overseeing more than 20 residency and fellowship programs. She also served as Program Director of the general surgery residency at Maricopa Medical Center for almost 7 years and was previously the Chair of the Department of Surgery and Anesthesia at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University and holds current academic appointments as a Clinical Assistant Professor at both Midwestern and at the University of Arizona Phoenix College of Medicine. She is passionate about both undergraduate and graduate medical education, and helping students and residents find their way in medicine and surgery.

Outside of work, Dr. Ferguson spends as much time as possible with her husband, Derek and their young son JD. She is an avid baker, popcorn aficionado, professional people watcher and wanderlust. She is always willing to travel for good coffee, great food and the company of family and friends.

Kate Moodey is a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at Maricopa Integrated Health System?s Roosevelt Campus, having recently served as Nurse Manager for the newly-opened Emergency Department at the MIH S Maryvale Hospital. Kate obtained her BSN from Arizona State University and is currently pursuing her MSN ? Leadership in Health Care Systems from Grand Canyon University.

Kate started her nursing career as a New Graduate RN at MIH S in 2011 in the inpatient pediatric world, but quickly found her home in the Emergency Department in 2013. In addition to her work at MIH S, she has served as faculty at Chamberlain College of Nursing since 2015 and is a member of the United States Navy Reserve Nurse Corps.

Kate lives in Central Phoenix with her fiancĂŠ, Ryan. The two are busy planning their February 2020 wedding and are looking forward to cake tasting next on their to-do list. Kate enjoys traveling as much as her schedule allows and checking items off her bucket list, which most recently included attending the Kentucky Derby!

Dr. Sandra Yuh serves as Clinical Medical Director, Quality Medical Director and is an internist and resident clinic attending physician at the Comprehensive Health Center ?

Sandra Yuh MD District Medical Group (DMG) Maricopa Integrated Health System

She earned a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) in psychology from the Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, her Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, and completed her internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

She currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Creighton University College of Medicine ? Phoenix, and as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Community Clinical Experience Preceptor for the University of Arizona College of Medicine?s Phoenix campus.

From 2006 until 2015, Sandra served as a general internist and resident clinic attending physician for the MIH S Sunnyslope Family Health Center. She began her role as Quality Medical Director in 2013 and in 2015 transferred her primary practice location to the Comprehensive Health Center ? Internal Medicine Clinic.

She previously worked as a general internist in a single specialty group practice, Thunderbird Internal Medicine in Glendale, Arizona, and as both an internist and internal medicine residency faculty member at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Married to Brian, an interventional radiologist, and Mother to Sam, a freshman in vocal performance at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, Katie, a senior at Xavier College Preparatory and Michael, a freshman at Brophy College Prep, in her spare time, Sandra likes to work out, hike, listen to music, and eat ALL foods!

Karie Dozer emcees and hosts local business presentations and community events, creates presentations and coaches professionals in their delivery, and provides the voice talent for commercial and non-broadcast audio and video productions.

Karie has worked in and around Phoenix media for more than 20 years. Karie has hosted a number of different weekday and weekend radio shows at the radio station that gave her her first job out of college, KTAR, now 92.3 FM Phoenix.

Most recently, she co-hosted a midday talk show covering local and national news and events. Karie loves local radio because of its immediate and intimate connection to listeners, and its familiar place in their daily lives.

Courtney Bishop, MD (1995-1998) General Pediatrics with additional training in autism. Founding Practice Partner. Dr. Bishop trained at MIH S under Doctors Cohen, Hemmady, Bakerman, and others. She is the mother of three teenagers and an active community and school volunteer.

Trained under Doctors Kelly, Hemmady, Caputo, Frechette, Kotwal, Chundu and Hecht. Dr. Peterson is the mother of three, rapidly approaching an empty nest. She is involved with community philanthropies, including National Charity League of Ahwatukee (a Maricopa Health Foundation volunteer partner!)

Tanya Horner, MD (2005-2008) General Pediatrics. Practice Partner.

Dr. Horner trained at the combined PCH /MIH S residency program under Doctors Charlton, Hemmady, McMahon, Kelly, Frechette, Kotwal, Chundu, Hecht, Park, Pradhan, Eccles and Rosenberg. She specializes in circumcisions, ADH D and Autism diagnosis and treatment, and is a member of the Finance sub-committee of the Executive Board of the Phoenix Children's Care Network.

Aseema Maher, MD (2001-2004) General Pediatrics. Pediatric Chief Resident (2004-2005) Practice Partner. Dr. Maher trained under Doctors Caputo, Bhavaraju, Pinckard-Hansen, Kelly, Park, and Panchanathan. Dr. Maher has also practiced pediatric urgent care at Phoenix Children?s Hospital and academic medicine at MIH S. She loves her job at Step by Step Pediatrics and raising her two young daughters ? always striving for balance!

Abigail Alviar, DO (2011-2014) General Pediatrics. Practice Partner.

Dr. Alviar rotated at MIH S for 2 years as a medical student and 3 years of residency.
