Dear Friends, Thank you for joining the Maricopa Health Foundation today to learn more about the amazing work being done every day at the MIH S Arizona Burn Center. We will highlight this important resource for any one of us, our families or our neighbors experiencing a burn accident. Few of us will need the extensive services provided in the center. All of us need burn prevention education and the reassuring knowledge that this national jewel exists in our community.

MIHSArizona Burn Center As Arizona?s only nationally verified burn center, Maricopa Integrated Health System?s comprehensive Arizona Burn Center is the leading provider of emergency services to adult and pediatric burn patients from across the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.

Flames, boiling water, chemical spills, electrocution ? any of these can cause burns or pulmonary damage. Fortunately, MIH S?s Arizona Burn Center provides a comprehensive set of medical and ancillary specialty care services for adult and pediatric burn patients.

That?s why MIH S?s Arizona Burn Center, which celebrated 50 years of service in 2014, is one of the busiest burn centers in the United States, seeing over 5,000 patients annually, and boasts a survival rate of more than 98 percent. It is nationally recognized for its top-ranked burn care and research.

The Arizona Burn Center is the epicenter of the state of Arizona Burn Disaster Network. Established in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the network connects 10 hospitals to the burn center through telemedicine. MIH S?s Arizona Burn Center has 45 beds, state of the art equipment and physicians and nurses who are all board certified in emergency burn services.

Through partnering with the Burn Disaster Network, there are now 110 more burn beds available statewide, providing burn patients outside of Phoenix top-notch care through the Arizona Burn Center?s physicians and nurses.

Dr. Kevin Foster is board certified by The American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also has a Master?s Degree in Business Administration. He did his training at the University of Wisconsin followed by a fellowship in Burn, at The University of Washington in Seattle. He currently holds a faculty appointment with the University of Arizona?s College of Medicine as a Clinical Professor of Surgery. He serves as the Chief of Burn Services at The Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix and is the Director of Surgical Research at Maricopa Integrated Health System.

Dr. Foster is actively involved in all aspects of burn research and has lectured extensively throughout the United States.

He served as the Program Director for the Department of Surgery?s General Surgery Residency Training Program for 8 years and continues mentoring the students and residents at Maricopa Medical Center.

Suzanne Buchanan, MSN, RN, CCRN OUTREACH EDUCATOR, MIHS ARIZONA BURN CENTER

Maricopa Integrated Health System

Suzanne has worked at the Arizona Burn Center for the last 30 years as a staff nurse and relief charge nurse in the Burn Intensive Care Unit. Her current position held since 2002 is Arizona Burn Center Outreach Educator which includes teaching health care providers, military personnel, nursing and paramedic student?s emergency burn care. To maintain her skills, she continues to work in the Burn Center, Burn Emergency Department and Burn Outpatient Clinic. Her past nursing experience includes emergency department and flight nursing.

Suzanne has a passion for educating others and shares that knowledge as the Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) Coordinator for Arizona and coordinates and instructs in ABLS courses nationally. She also provides burn and trauma education in the military Readiness Skills Sustainment Training Program (RSSTP), United States Air Force Nurse Transition Program and in the Critical Care & Emergency Trauma Nursing Fellowship Program.

Suzanne also has a passion for community service and has volunteered for several medical missions providing medical and disaster relief after hurricanes in Port Au Prince Haiti, Gulfport, Mississippi and Brooklyn, New York.

Katy Owens MOTHER OF CORBET AND BONNIE, 2014 BURN SURVIVORS

Katy Owens grew up in Phoenix.

She and her husband, Buddy, are parents to 16-year-old Corbet and 14-year-old Bonnie.

It was the end of a relaxing family New Year?s Day in North Central Phoenix. The kids were sitting together by the living room fireplace, both watching videos on their phones. Corbet was wearing his brand-new coat from Christmas.

They asked Mom and Dad if they could go outside for one more jump on the trampoline.

Corbet and Bonnie had been watching YouTube videos showing aerosol cans making fire torches.

They weren?t on the trampoline.

Katy soon found herself in an ambulance with both of her children. Corbet told the paramedic his pain level was an 8 out of 10.

The paramedic told Katy they were heading straight to the Arizona Burn Center at MIH S.

Lilly McCune MOTHER OF ISABELLA, A 2018 BURN SURVIVOR

Lilly and JD McCune are the proud parents of 15-year-old Zachary and 9-year-old Isabella. Their lives were full managing a family business and raising two children. Then came the day their focus and priorities changed.

On March 17, 2018, the McCunes were preparing for a neighborhood St. Patrick?s Day party. As usual, it would include a family cookout, kids?games, bikes, skateboards and chatting around the fire. With her corned beef and cabbage cooking in the house and burgers on the grill, Lilly headed outside to help.

JD, Isabella, Zachary and their neighbors were near the unlit fire pit they used the night before. Isabella?s 8-year-old friend wanted to ride a bike, but with party setup underway, Lilly wasn?t comfortable letting her go on her own. Lilly got on a bike to ride down the street with Isabella?s friend.

When she returned, her life would change forever.

The McCune?s next nine months would revolve around the MIH S Arizona Burn Center.

Kris Gaw became Chief Operating Officer of MIH S in March 2016. MIH S is Arizona?s only public healthcare system and Maricopa County?s largest training center of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

MIH S includes the Maricopa Medical Center, the Arizona Burn Center, the Arizona Children?s Center, a Level I Trauma Center, two behavioral health centers and a network of 12 neighborhood clinics that serve the entire county.

Maricopa Integrated Health System Ms. Gaw has been honored by Modern Heal t hcare as one of t he nat ion?s Top 25 COOs in Heal t hcare (2017); Becker?s Hospit al Review Women Hospit al and Heal t h Syst em Leaders t o Know (2016, 2017 and 2018); Phoenix Business Journal ?s Out st anding Women in Business (2017); and AZ Big Media?s Most Inf l uent ial Women in Arizona (2018).

Prior to joining MIH S, Ms. Gaw served as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer ? Hospital Operations for Parkland Hospital and Health System in Dallas, Texas, one of the largest public health systems in the country. At Parkland, Ms. Gaw was responsible for overseeing daily hospital operations as well as system wide ancillary and support services and the completion of their $1.4 billion 2.1 million square feet hospital in 2015. She served as Executive Lead for the successful movement of 626 patients from existing to new hospital via a 923-foot $25 million bridge over a two-day period.

From 2008 to 2014, Ms. Gaw served as Chief Operating Officer at Renown Regional Medical Center, an 808-bed tertiary care facility and Level II Trauma Center in Reno, Nevada, that provides services that span over an 80,000-mileradius from Sacramento to Salt Lake City. Renown Regional is home to the area?s only Children?s Hospital, with the region?s only children?s emergency room. From 2002 to 2008, Ms. Gaw was Vice President of Human Resources at Renown Health, northern Nevada?s largest integrated health network, with more than 6,000 employees. From 1995 to 2001, Ms. Gaw was Director of Customer Service for Hometown Health, the insurance division of Renown Health.

Ms. Gaw received both a bachelor?s and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. She is a member of American College of Healthcare Executives and is a certified in lean principles.

Ms. Gaw also is the proud Mom of a beautiful daughter who is nearing the end of her nursing school education here in the valley.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES Karie Dozer emcees and hosts local business presentations and community events, creates presentations and coaches professionals in their delivery, and provides the voice talent for commercial and non-broadcast audio and video productions.

Karie has worked in and around Phoenix media for more than 20 years. Karie has hosted a number of different weekday and weekend radio shows at the radio station that gave her her first job out of college, KTAR, now 92.3 FM Phoenix.

Most recently, she co-hosted a midday talk show covering local and national news and events.

Karie loves local radio because of its immediate and intimate connection to listeners, and its familiar place in their daily lives.
