WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: Valleywise Health Foundation provides philanthropic and financial support to critical programs that include medical education, research and capital improvement projects. The mission of Valleywise Health is at the heart of all we do – provide exceptional care, without exception, to every patient, every time. People in need who walk through our doors, regardless of the neighborhood they call home, receive the same compassionate treatment and expert care. Valleywise Health is Arizona's only public teaching health system addressing the Valley's most critical healthcare needs. We provide medical services to the underserved in our community as well as critical, hands on instruction to tomorrow's medical professionals. In 2014, Maricopa County residents supported the passage of Proposition 480 (now called Care Reimagined), that provided much-needed funding to renovate, rebuild and modernize outdated medical facilities. We’re excited to begin work on the new Valleywise Health Medical Center that’s slated to open in 2023. This state of the art facility will provide emergency services, acute care, surgery, as well as women’s and pediatric services.

In 2000, the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma bestowed its highest level of burn care recognition on the Arizona Burn Center. Since that time, The Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health has been nationally verified by this accrediting committee six times.

WHY OUR WORK IS VITAL: An important component of the new Valleywise Health Center will be an expanded and redesigned Arizona Burn Center. The Arizona Burn Center -- the region’s only such facility focused on burn treatment -- has been a place of healing and comfort for those who have come to us for care since 1965.

ARIZONA BURN CENTER AT VALLEYWISE HEALTH The Arizona Burn Center is among the largest burn centers in the nation. It continues to be Arizona's only nationally verified adult and pediatric burn center that serves patients from all over the world. Our facility sees more than 5,000 outpatient visits and 1,000 inpatient admissions each year. Through its programs and networks, the Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health provides exceptional burn care, education and research. To secure community support for the Arizona Burn Center, Valleywise Health Foundation launched a campaign to secure funding to purchase medical equipment and furnishings that are outside of the designated construction costs covered by voter approved funds. The projected cost to build and equip the new Arizona Burn Center is $55.3 million. Of that cost, $39.9 million is for construction and design, which is covered through Prop 480 bonds. The remaining $15.3 million is needed to complete the new Arizona Burn Center with highly-specialized medical equipment and

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE AND LOOKING AHEAD

For decades, our internationally-renowned center for innovation, research and world-class clinical burn care has excelled in a confined, disjointed space that is not designed for the unique needs of our patients. Our existing facility has 45 beds with some shared rooms situated throughout the medical center that have multiple entry points. Despite this challenging environment, our dedicated and compassionate clinicians have built a world-class program in a less than ideal space. Significantly, our center has an outstanding 98 percent survival rate. Taking care of burn patients is resource intensive. The goal is for our patients to not only survive their burns, but to also thrive in their recovery, as well as return to their preinjury functions – their life, their families, their work, and the activities that bring them enjoyment. With a new modern facility, our care team will be able to treat burn patients both acutely (in the hospital) and long-term while continuing their recovery.

“I could never say thank you enough for everything the Arizona Burn Center has done for me and my family. I knew they would always be there with me every step of the way and that I never had to worry about being alone. My mom knew I would be safe and that she could trust them to watch over me. I could never say thank you enough for how they helped me become the person I am now – a survivor.” ISABELLA MCCUNE, AN 11-YEAR-OLD BURN SURVIVOR

TREATING A BURN SURVIVORS’ LIFE-LONG CARE NEEDS Understanding that burn patients often require support beyond medical interventions, our team of burn care professionals also look to psychosocial care and mindfulness to support a patient’s recovery. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder occurs frequently in burn patients. The new Arizona Burn Center wellness center will feature distinct areas of care beyond the dressing changes, skin grafts and acute care. They will be focused on treating a burn survivors’ life-long care needs. Our care team had the privilege of designing the new facility from both the patient’s and clinician’s perspective, allowing us to bring the functions and features of world-class burn care into one location. The design philosophy of the new Arizona Burn Center fosters a sense of safety, openness, collaboration, peer support in recovery, and responsiveness which are key in addressing the trauma associated with burns as well as a patient’s long term recovery. To support this design philosophy, our new 75,000-square-foot Arizona Burn Center will feature:

“The reason I’m most passionate about Valleywise Health and the Arizona Burn Center is because I’m a direct result of the amazing, world-class team they have there. In February 2014, I was involved in a natural gas explosion in Gilbert that left me with an 80 percent burn. I spent six months at Valleywise Health being treated for my injuries and months after that in rehab. Because of the Arizona Burn Center, the doctors, the nurses, and everyone else there, I now consider myself not just a burn survivor, but a burn thriver!” JASON NELSON
