Dear friends, On behalf of the Maricopa Health Foundation board, staff and Legacy Circle, I'm thrilled to welcome you to our third annual Legacy Circle Night of Heroes! We look forward to sharing a glimpse into the work of the heroic doctors, nurses and other health care professionals at Maricopa Integrated Health System (soon to be Valleywise Health) through the incredibly inspiring story of Derek Boehm. We started Night of Heroes three years ago to celebrate patient heroes whose recovery from life-changing injuries inspired them to give back to others. We call it the ripple effect. You?ll see that tonight.
Those who know MIHS, like doctors and nurses, firefighters and paramedics ? know the ripple effect our safety net health system and public teaching hospital has in the Valley. Not only for the populations we serve, but because of the healthcare professionals we train. You?ll see that tonight as well. It has been an exciting and busy year for our foundation as MIHS is in the midst of its Care Reimagined initiative with the re-opening of Maryvale Hospital on April 11, and construction of the 127,000 square foot West Valley Primary and Specialty Care Center well underway. The new MIHS Maryvale Campus provides adult and pediatric emergency services to an underserved community, and behavioral health beds to address a growing need across the Valley. In addition, MIHS?s role as one of the largest teaching hospitals in Arizona expanded last year with an innovative partnership between MIHS, Creighton University, Dignity Health St. Joseph?s Hospital and District Medical Group (DMG), that aims to address a shortage of doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals. These are just two examples of MIHS stepping up to address critical community needs ? like it has for generations of Arizona families for more than 140 years.
Now it?s OUR turn to step up with philanthropic support for the heroes at MIHS. Like the doctors and nurses who were there for Derek, MIHS is there for all of us, with compassion at its core. STEVE PURVES President & Chief Executive Officer Maricopa Integrated Health System Board Member Maricopa Health Foundation
Steve Purves became President & Chief Executive Officer of MIHS in September 2013. MIHS is Arizona?s only public healthcare system and Maricopa County?s largest training center of physicians and other healthcare professionals. Steve works with the publicly elected five-member Board of Directors who represent the Maricopa County Special Health Care District, to plan, direct and manage the current operations, future growth and program development for MIHS. Steve is actively involved in the community as an ambassador for MIHS and in a variety of roles outside his health care duties. He serves on the America?s Essential Hospitals (AEH) Board, Arizona Hospital and Health Care Association (AzHHA) Board, Maricopa Health Foundation Board, the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance Board, Arizona Chamber of Commerce Board, Arizona State University Health Advisory Board and Health Futures Council, and the Arizona Health Collaborative (AHC) Board. He is also a member of Greater Phoenix Leadership (GPL) and an American Hospital Association Regional 8 Policy Board Delegate. He received his Master?s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and his Bachelor?s Degree in Health Education (Cum Laude) from Springfield College in Springfield, MA. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). Steve is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. He and his wife have two children and two grandchildren.
MARK DEWANE Chairman ? District 2 Maricopa County Special Health Care District Board Member Maricopa Health Foundation
Mark G. Dewane joined the Maricopa County Special Health Care District Board of Directors in December 2012. He is in his second term on the board. Mark has over 25 years of volunteer experience in Arizona. Mark is a financial advisor by profession and serves as Senior Vice President of RBC Wealth Management in Phoenix. He has 34 years of experience in the finance field guiding clients through retirement planning, estate creation, wealth accumulation and insurance matters. Mark is also very involved in volunteer activities with a number of community based organizations. His involvement includes: Phoenix Police Reserve Foundation, Maricopa Health Foundation, Kitchen on the Street, Foundation for Blind Children, FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association, ASU Alumni Association, Scottsdale Business Development Forum, and several other advisory and planning roles. Over the past 20 years Mark has helped raise millions of dollars for the non-profit community. Mark brings his passion for positive change to Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) with a sweeping vision to revitalize the state?s only public health care system. His goals include supporting management to build a bigger and better health care system, creating a better patient environment, enhancing the MIHS brand, and upgrading and enhancing outdated facilities. Mark has lived in the Phoenix area since 1970 and received his bachelor?s degree in business management from Arizona State University in 1985. He also has taken graduate coursework through the Hanover Forum at The W harton School. Mark and his wife of 26 years have two children.
ERIC D. KATZ, MD, MBA Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine Maricopa Integrated Health System Professor, Affiliate Faculty, Creighton University School of Medicine Executive Chairman and Professor Department of Emergency Medicine University of Arizona COM- Phoenix Board Member Maricopa Health Foundation Dr. Katz is a dual-boarded, physician executive with more than 19 years of experience as a leader, clinician, and educator. He became the Chairman of the Emergency Medicine Department at Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) in 2014 and has served as the Executive Chairman of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine since 2015. An active member in the community, Dr. Katz is a board member of the Maricopa Health Foundation. He is a sought-after lecturer and presenter on a range of topics in general Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine, including wellness, professional development, infectious disease and oncologic conditions. Dr. Katz served as Chief of Staff at MIHS from 2015 to 2017 and on the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine as a board member from 2009 to 2015 and President from 2013 to 2014. During this time, he built a strong support structure, improved interdepartmental cooperation, and worked to maximize utilization of healthcare technology. Dr. Katz also
served as the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director from 2006 to 2013. Recognized as an expert in developing and mentoring the new generation of physician leaders, Dr. Katz was awarded the Parker J. Palmer ?Courage to Teach? award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), an award that is presented to 10 of the 6,000 residency program directors each year for innovation and leadership in education. Dr. Katz is also a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (FAAEM). Dr. Katz received his Master of Business Administration from the University of Arizona, Eller College of Management, his Doctor of Medicine from Yeshiva University Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and his residencies in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine at Allegheny General Hospital. Dr. Katz and his wife, Aimee, have two teenage daughters.
KATE MOODEY, BSN, RN Nurse Manager Emergency Department Maryvale Campus Maricopa Integrated Health System Kate Moodey is the Nurse Manager for the newly opened Emergency Department at the MIHS Maryvale Campus. Kate obtained her BSN from Arizona State University and is currently pursuing her MSN ? Leadership in Health Care Systems from Grand Canyon University. Kate started her nursing career as a New Graduate RN at MIHS in 2011 in the inpatient pediatric world, but quickly found her home in the Emergency Department in 2013. In addition to her work at MIHS, Kate has served as faculty at Chamberlain College of Nursing since 2015 and is a member of the United States Navy Reserve Nurse Corps.
DEREK BOEHM, RN Nurse Emergency Department Maricopa Integrated Health System Derek Boehm was born in New Jersey, but has lived in Arizona since his family moved here when he was in second grade. Even as a young boy, Derek was driven by a desire to make the world a better place. His father was a corporal in the Marines. His maternal grandfather fought in World War II, and his paternal grandfather fought in World War I. For as long as he can remember, Derek dreamt of continuing his family?s legacy of service in our nation?s Armed Forces.
He enlisted with the Marines in 1994, during his senior year in high school. By the following July he was attending boot camp. During his time with the Marines, Derek never saw combat, but instead traveled across the globe on a series of humanitarian relief missions. It was while deployed on one such mission in Malaysia that Derek had the opportunity to experience the ripple effect firsthand. He visited several impoverished communities (often in remote and difficult to reach locations) to deliver shipments of food, supplies, and other aid, including whatever medical assistance Derek and his fellow Marines could provide. Seeing the impact these efforts had on the communities he visited, Derek resolved then and there to dedicate his post-service life to medicine. Upon leaving the military in 1999, Derek became an EMT and began working at a small fire department. In that role, he soon found himself drawn to the high-stakes life-and-death work performed by the flight paramedics who worked hand-in-hand with the fire department. These individuals were usually only deployed in the most emergent and dire of circumstances, where patients?lives regularly depended on responders?stamina, mental fortitude, and split-second decision-making abilities. For many, this kind of work can be exhausting, grim, and difficult. For Derek, it sounded like a good part-time job to take on in addition to his full-time
work with the fire department. In that environment, Derek?s background and military training truly shone, helping him remain calm in even the most harrowing of situations. It was not long before Derek?s part-time job became his passion, and in 2010 he switched to working full-time as a flight paramedic. Derek completed hundreds of life-saving flights, but once again, he found himself searching for ways to make an even greater impact. As Derek became more experienced he came to appreciate the value of having a fully-trained RN on board these emergency flights and, to use his words, he ?got the bug.?In 2013, he quit his job to enroll in Mesa Community College?s Paramedic RN program. It was the first time in nearly 20 years that Derek had been enrolled in school, but as you have begun to see, Derek is not the kind of person to let a challenge stop him. Despite getting off to a rocky start, by 2015 he was nearing graduation, and so returned to working full-time as a flight paramedic. There was a mandatory six-month re-orientation period, during which time Derek developed close relationships with his new partner, Chad Frary, as well as regular pilot, David Schneider. Chad and ?Schneider?were also both veterans, and the three would often trade stories about their time together in the service.
The Day of t he Crash Derek remembers the fateful day of the crash, not only because of the tragic events that would ultimately follow, but because this was to be his first flight after completing the six-month re-orientation period. For their very first call, he, Chad, and Schneider were tasked with transporting a patient who was experiencing a heart attack. After successfully delivering the patient to a nearby hospital, they stopped to refuel. It was then that Chad remarked their return path would almost carry them over his home. It was nearly his daughter?s birthday, so the three decided to divert their flight path slightly so Chad could wave down from the helicopter at his little girl. At the time, none of them could have imagined it would be the last time Chad would interact with his family. The three resumed their charted path and began what all of them believed would be a short, uneventful return flight. Derek and Chad reviewed their notes from their last patient, both looking for ways to improve? to be even better for the next patient they served. After a while they fell back on trading stories of their time with the Marines. Schneider, who had been in the Army, would occasionally chime in to offer his own perspective, but most of the conversation was between Derek and Chad. Derek was looking down at his laptop, chatting off and on with Chad, when the first signs of trouble hit.
Schneider?s voice abruptly came bursting over the coms: ?Oh, S--!? Tonight, in his own words, you will hear about the crash? during which Derek never lost consciousness. You will hear about the dramatic rescue and the heroic efforts made to save his life once he was brought to the emergency department at MIHS. You will hear how a team of dedicated health care professionals, doctors, nurses, therapists and many more not only saved Derek, but helped him recover and the ripple effect he has on so many people.

KARIE DOZER Master of Ceremonies Karie Dozer emcees and hosts local business presentations and community events, creates presentations and coaches professionals in their delivery, and provides the voice talent for commercial and non-broadcast audio and video productions. Karie has worked in and around Phoenix media for more than 20 years. Karie has hosted a number of different weekday and weekend radio shows at the radio station that gave her her first job out of college, KTAR, now 92.3 FM Phoenix. Most recently, she co-hosted a midday talk show covering local and national news and events.
