Imagine Arizona nationally recognized for transforming care Established in 2003, CopaBall is Maricopa Health Foundation’s largest annual philanthropic event and fundraising gala. Proceeds from the event support vital community programs, medical equipment, and charitable funding needs at Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS), Arizona’s only-safety-net health system and public teaching hospital.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MIHS PRESIDENT & CEO Welcome to Maricopa Health Foundation’s annual CopaBall, supporting the programs, services and mission of Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS). Tonight’s theme, “Imagine Our Future,” highlights how MIHS is elevating the level of health care for our community through the reinvention of our teaching hospital and safety net system of care.

It’s been an incredibly busy and exciting year for MIHS. We’ve begun construction of the West Valley Primary & Specialty Care Center in Peoria, purchased the Maryvale Hospital, and are well underway with the development of our new Family Health Centers across Maricopa County.

The West Valley Primary & Specialty Care Center, scheduled to open in 2020, will be approximately 127,000 square feet and will increase access to critical health care services for the rapidly growing West Valley community.

We are also hard at work remodeling the Maryvale Hospital. When it reopens in 2019, the hospital will provide adult and pediatric emergency services to a medically underserved area and include up to 200 behavioral health beds to help address a growing need across the Valley.

We are also making great progress with plans to replace the nearly 50-yearold Maricopa Medical Center. The new state-of-the-art teaching hospital is planned to open in 2023 and will include new space for the Arizona Burn Center, our Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center and many other important medical and surgical services for our region.

MIHS’s historic role as one of the largest physician, nursing and allied health training centers in Arizona expanded this year with the creation of the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance. This innovative partnership includes Creighton University, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and District Medical Group (DMG). The Alliance aims to address the significant shortage of health care personnel which limits access to care for thousands of people across Arizona.

MIHS has proudly and quietly served our community for over 140 years. It has always been through the commitment of many dedicated community leaders, volunteers, physicians and other health care professionals that we have been able to fulfill our vital mission.

Kristy Siefkin is an Emmy-nominated reporter and evening weather anchor for Fox 10 News. Her unique ability to both educate and entertain has made her a favorite with valley viewers, earning her the title “Best Weather Personality” in several valley publications.

When Kristy’s not busy chasing Monsoon storms, she’s chasing compelling stories; reporting on everything from medical breakthroughs to political debates to the environmental concerns.

Prior to her career in broadcasting, Kristy was a national spokeswoman, corporate trainer, and multimedia producer for the AKC and Guide Dogs for the Blind. William Johnson, MD Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology | Medical Director, Perioperative Services

Dr. William Johnson serves as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and as Medical Director of Perioperative Services for Maricopa Integrated Health System, two of the many leadership roles he has held during his 30 yeartenure at MIHS. His path to medicine was less direct than many of his colleagues. “I started medical school with a tenyear mathematics and teaching career behind me – at an age when many people are finishing their residencies. That’s why I tell people I haven’t retired yet, because I have a decade to make up.”

Bill Johnson was raised in the small Christian community of Pine Forge, Pennsylvania with a strong emphasis on both education and health. His father was a chemist and his mother, a librarian. Since both had postgraduate educations, the idea of going on beyond college was a natural assumption.

As a high school senior, he wanted to be five things: a cardiologist, an endocrinologist, a mathematician, a physicist and a chemist. “Even back in the 1960s, without today’s partitioned disciplines, you couldn’t be all of those things – but I didn’t know that then.”

“My father was a scientist and I wanted to be like him,” he said. “As a child, I got remote control toys and gadgets, including an 18-inch refractor telescope. He challenged me to find all nine planets.

I mapped them all out except Pluto and Mercury – and I spent years looking. It would’ve been helpful knowing back then that Pluto wasn’t a planet!”

In eighth grade, his father gave him chemicals and a principles of chemistry book, which he read and memorized. Then came a book on organic chemistry. “It was tougher to read and memorize, but

it gave me something to idolize him through, so I did.”

After he read the book, his dad gave him lithium, metallic lithium, metallic sodium, magnesium strips, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, pure carbon, and sodium nitrate. “I basically had the components of a bomb. I don’t think my mother realized at the time how close I could have been to blowing the house up. I learned chemistry by conducting experiments in our basement. I built rockets and launched them,” he recalled. “I loved watching them take off, though today, my rockets would be called pipe bombs.”

With a science background well beyond his years, he took the most advanced mathematics, chemistry, and physics classes in college. Four years later, in 1966, with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics from Pacific Union College, he applied to NASA, Raytheon and other science industries with no luck. “My wife, Leanor, and I were getting married, and I needed a job. The National Teacher Corps was looking for people to go to Johnson City, Tennessee to teach underserved kids math, so we decided to go.”

Despite tremendous challenges due to the color of their skin, one of Dr. Johnson’s proudest achievements came from his two years there. “The handful of outdated textbooks at the school were not adequate, and the principal would not let me purchase new ones. Sadly, I could tell many of the kids lived in tough conditions as well. So, I decided to write a mathematics manual to make up for their lack of a proper textbook. I wrote it in language they knew and in with local terms they could understand.

I let each student know I cared about them and was invested in their success.”

The manual was later published and distributed by the National Teacher Corps and recognized as the most significant contribution to the organization in 1967.

Dr. Johnson said it felt good making that contribution, being involved with the students, and seeing their progress. “Math helped me help those kids, and others across the country.”

– all with the same mission, to serve our patients – and each other. We are driven by a need to serve. It’s an environment that’s difficult to match. I like my surgeons, I like my consultants. We are friends as well as colleagues.

That’s big. The remuneration is more than just the dollars - it’s the opportunity to have a family life and work in a supportive environment,” he said.

After two years in Tennessee, the Johnsons moved to Purdue University in Indiana to work on their Ph.Ds.: Leanor’s in sociology and Bill’s in mathematics – algebraic topology to be precise.

District Medical Group CEO, Dr. Kote Chundu, has worked with Dr. Johnson for 26 years at Maricopa Medical Center and is a past recipient of the J. Kipp Charlton Physician of Excellence Award himself. He said, “As a physician and anesthesiologist, Bill is supurb. But, he is also a compassionate human being. His calm, quiet leadership, especially in stressful times, makes him truly deserving of this honor.”

The Johnsons’ change of course came during the economic downturn in the 70s. “I started my doctoral dissertation and saw my graduating friends not getting jobs,” he said. “We had been down that road before and didn’t want to do it again. I needed a field that works in a depression, that works in all parts of the country, and that will always be there. I also wanted to help people like I did in Tennessee.”

He remembered wanting to be a cardiologist and endocrinologist as a kid, so he and Leanor decided to apply to medical schools. In 1978 he was accepted into PIMS, a new medical science program through the University of Florida’s College of Medicine, and Leanor landed a job as an assistant professor at Florida State University. After two years, Leanor was offered a job in Washington D.C. The couple moved, and Bill graduated two years later, in 1982, from George Washington University Medical School. After completing his residency at The University of Maryland, he taught at Howard University’s Department of Anesthesiology for a year.

“In 1986, I came to the Phoenix Indian Medical Center in Phoenix to fulfill a three-year payback obligation incurred from PHS support through medical school. After a year or so, my wife had an opportunity at ASU that pretty much led to our staying in Phoenix. In 1988, I began to moonlight at Maricopa Medical Center, and in 1989, the chairman of my residency program, Dr. Martin Helrich, contacted me about plans for a new residency program starting at the county hospital. He suggested I apply for a faculty position. I guess, as you say, the rest is history.”

Dr. Johnson was hired at Maricopa Medical Center in 1989 as a faculty member in the residency program, and has worked there ever since.

“I love this environment and its enormous, infinite potential. We are multi-disciplinary and have hundreds of physicians and caretakers all under the same umbrella

Not only is anesthesiology a fit because of its technology focus, but it’s also a field that allows Dr. Johnson to interact with families. “It’s more than just putting a patient to sleep, waking them up, and saying goodbye. It’s flexible enough to be involved with patients and provide a positive experience they will remember.”

“I enjoy medicine and am so happy I made the transition.

I love anesthesiology. I’m still a kid myself, so it was just natural to specialize in pediatric anesthesia,” he said. “We have fun with the kids. I can wear funny things. I can tease them, and that is a joy. Having a parent smile and say, ‘I appreciate how you cared for my child,’ to me, that’s a high.”

“While I’m in a field that’s very specialized, my real role is to serve and enable others. I have an opportunity at work to get a smile from my patients, but also from my colleagues. Surgeons, even psychiatrists, bring patients to our operating room,” he said. “We see everyone ranging from obstetrics to orthopedics. I have a lot of opportunity to serve people – not just our patients, but my colleagues as well.”

MIHS President and CEO Steve Purves added, “Dr. Bill Johnson is a strong, steady leader who is well respected, not just at MIHS, but across the state and nation. We are fortunate to have him at MIHS and proud he is being recognized.”

When asked about his legacy, Dr. Johnson said, “I’m extremely proud of our three sons who all finished college and have successful careers. I’d like to be remembered by my patients and colleagues as someone who had fun delivering excellent care, and by my family as a loving father, a husband in love with his wife, and as a man who did the very best he could to provide for them.”

Pat Kardos Director of Nursing MIHS Arizona Burn Center Medical ICU and Surgical ICU

MSN, RN, CCRN She was going to work with horses, at least that was her plan.

Pat Kardos was a horse trainer and a competitor herself. She was finishing her agriculture degree when friends told her times were tough in the real world. They were getting paid in bales of hay, or maybe not at all. As a trainer, she was gone all the time which was hard on her kids – and, according to Pat, they were reading the racing report and wanting to place bets, which probably wasn’t good. (However, she is quick to point out – all their picks were winning.)

Needing advice, Pat went to her college counselor who suggested the school’s nursing program. With science courses already under her belt, she decided to sign up. And so, began a storied career in nursing that has inspired many and touched thousands of patients, families and caregivers over more than 25 years. She became a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1993, earned her Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) in 2009, and her Master’s degree (MSN) in 2013.

Pat Kardos serves as nursing director of the MIHS Arizona Burn Center, as well as the health system’s nursing lead for the Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Units.

With more than 5,000 outpatient visits and 900 admissions each year, her role at Arizona’s only nationally verified adult and pediatric burn center (serving the entire Southwestern United States) would be enough responsibility and challenge for the most time-tested leader.

But, when the need arises – Pat steps up and steps in. For more than six years, she has also overseen nursing for the 25 combined medical and surgical ICU beds connected to MIHS’ Level 1 Trauma Center, serving both children and adults. Additionally, under her watch is the health system’s Endoscopy Clinic with approximately

15 procedures a day, its Gastroenterology (GI) Clinic averaging 50 visits a day and the Luminosity Spa – a full-service medical spa on the MIHS main campus.

These wide-ranging duties involve working with approximately 140 staff members, including registered nurses, certified burn technicians, certified nursing assistants and health unit coordinators.

Pat describes the lasting relationships built at the Burn Center, “We typically say, ‘every one percent of the total body surface area burned, is that many days.’ In other words, if you are 50 percent burned, we figure an average of 50 days in the hospital. That means we get to know you. We get to know your family, hear about your dog and your cousins. We get to hear everything about you because we’re here. We spend a lot of time with you, so we become very enmeshed.”

She says one of the most rewarding things is when a past patient comes to visit and they’re not recognized right away. “They look different than when we last saw them. They’re walking, talking and back to work. They’re doing comedy shows, or playing football again, whatever it is. That’s what really makes us tick.”

Pat likes to see people succeed. Whether it’s patients moving on with their lives, or staff moving up in their careers, she enjoys having a part in mentoring them.

MIHS Chief Nursing Officer Sherry Stotler points out that Pat continually challenges both herself, and the people she works with, to learn and grow.

“Several years ago, Pat went back to school for her Master’s degree. She continues to look for ways to enhance her knowledge in the everchanging world of healthcare, and pass that insight along,” Stotler said. “You spend most of your time at work, so the people become like family. Even in times of stress, Pat tries to keep things light. When situations aren’t going as planned, or are stressful, a favorite phrase she uses is, ‘We need to cowgirl up.’ When Pat says that, you stop for a moment and say, ‘Yeah, I need to cowgirl up.’ First, it makes you laugh – and then it gets you moving.”

While recognized over the years with honors including the MIHS Nursing Leadership Award, as a finalist for the March of Dimes Distinguished Nurse of the Year Award and as a Phoenix Business Journal Health Care Hero honoree, when asked about her role and daily duties, Kardos downplays her importance.

“All the departments I have are like 757s – they are built to fly. I think of myself as the luggage guy. Sometimes I load the luggage, or find lost bags and get them back to their owners.

Occasionally, I might serve the drinks, or even walk the aisles collecting trash. I just have to watch the details or maybe check a ticket. The people make it fly.”

“Pat will roll up her sleeves and jump in if something needs to be done – the ‘luggage guy’ analogy. At the same time, she’s like a pilot,” said Stotler. “She and Dr. Kevin Foster, Medical Director of the Burn Center, work as a team, like co-pilots. They focus on the environment and keep the plane on course.”

Pat drives 50 miles each way to work and has been at MIHS a total of 10 years. “I started my career here, in fact, I was standing in front of that nursing station when my mom called to tell me I passed the exam,” she said.

She left MIHS and worked in several ICU positions at hospitals much closer to her home.

But, when the opportunity to return to the MIIHS Arizona Burn Center came up, she knew she had to apply.

“If you get burned, and you know if you’ve been burned at some time in your life – maybe by a hot pan or curling iron – it hurts.

Imagine people who are burned over 20, 30 or 40 percent of their body in an accident or some traumatic incident,” she said. “Someone needs to care for those patients. We have the interdisciplinary team to get them back to a ‘baseline,’ whether that’s school or work, or just living their life. It takes a lot of skill, expertise and money to run a burn center, and we do it very well.

Pat says she loves the MIHS mission, but most of all, “I love the folks I work with and the inspiring people we care for.”

It’s hard to say what is the most unique facet of First Things First.

Perhaps it is the fact that is was created by Arizona voters. Perhaps it is the funds that are specifically set aside in law to protect its mission of enhancing school readiness for all children birth to 5 years old. Perhaps it is the realization that decisions about which early childhood services the public agency funds are made by community volunteers, not elected officials or paid staff. Or, perhaps, it is the fact that in its relatively short life, it has had such an enormous impact on communities statewide.

“We like to think that First Things First offers the best of both worlds,” Chief Executive Officer Marilee Dal Pra said. “Yes, it has a unique structure – engaging citizens in the act of governing – but it also has the same transparency and accountability of any state entity when it comes to how it operates and more importantly, what it is expected to achieve.”

And, what has that impact been? In the past decade, First Things First has worked in three primary areas: strengthening families in their role as their child’s first teachers; improving the quality of and access to child care and preschool; and preventive health. As a result, thousands of families have been able to access programs proven effective in enhancing school readiness, such as quality early learning programs, parenting education, and developmental screenings to detect issues before they become learning problems later on.

Most of this work is not done at First Things First. Instead of using its limited resources to build all new programs, the agency funds the work of community based organizations who have demonstrated both capacity and success in serving young children and their families. Maricopa Integrated Health Systems is one of those partners, funded by First Things First to support parents and caregivers through its network of Family Resource Centers, and to provide Care Coordination services, which help families navigate the complex systems to address the myriad of issues that may be impacting their well-being. Because of partnerships like this, First Things First is able to keep overhead low and ensure that most of its funding – an amazing 93 percent – goes directly to programs that serve children.

Although First Things First is proud of its achievements, those successes have also come with challenges. The Great Recession resulted in a 26% drop in tobacco revenue, the agency’s primary source of funding. In many communities, there is little infrastructure and capacity to expand. And, from time to time, First Things First has had to weather intense public debate over its funding, including a 2011 referral back to the voters, which re-approved First Things First by a 2-to-1 margin, and a 2016 comprehensive state audit that the agency passed with flying colors.

But, its greatest challenge is the sheer needs of young children.

There are more than half a million children under 6 years old in Arizona and they face significant barriers to success: more than 1 in 4 young children live in poverty; about 2 out of 3 children do not go to preschool; more than 3 out of 4 children do not receive timely screenings to identify potential developmental delays or disabilities; 1 in 5 children live in households that are food insecure; and 1 in 4 children under 6 have had two or more adverse childhood experiences.

First Things First faces these sobering statistics, not with hopelessness, but with optimism, determination and a spirit of collaboration.

“We know that no entity alone can address all the needs of young children, but each of us can do our part,” Dal Pra said. She pointed to partnerships the agency has with other state agencies, tribal and municipal governments, philanthropic organizations, faith communities and businesses as examples of how more and more Arizonans are engaged in the work of early childhood.

“Because 90 percent of a child’s brain develops by age 5, the early years represent our best opportunity to build a solid foundation for future success,” Dal Pra said. “When people understand this – and understand the need – they want to get involved. First Things First offers them the opportunity to volunteer - whether it’s with time, expertise or resources – to ensuring that all children have what they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond!”

Family Learning Centers

Families have many struggles they need support and assistance with in their lives.

They face issues and challenges well beyond their doctor visits that ultimately affect their families’ health. Helping to address the family’s economic, educational, and environmental needs can help lead to better health outcomes.

The MIHS Family Learning Centers (FLCs) are a one-stop-shop to meet these needs and provide increased access to quality health education while connecting families to vital community resources. These centers, located inside the MIHS Family Health Centers, are a vital overall presence in our communities and are committed to providing the highest level of care to all who come through their doors.

Since the first MIHS Family Learning Center opened on October 17, 2007, the FLCs have had more than 396,000 visitors and have hosted 22,000 workshops.

To date in 2018, the four MIHS Family Learning Centers have positively impacted the community in the following ways: • Held more than 2,200 workshops and events with over 21,000 people attending.

• Provided school age children with 5,270 lunches during the summer in partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank.

CHANGING A LIFE…RAISING A READER The national program is designed to educate parents about the importance of early literacy skills and how they can build these skills in their young children to help them enter school ready to learn. Families attend eight weekly early literacy workshops, and after each, they take home a bag of books to share with their children. Each week, the bag is exchanged for a new set of books. Parents who complete the program receive five high-quality children’s books to keep.

Family Learning Center pre and post-test-data show the number of participants who felt “very confident” about sharing books with their child(ren) increased by 32 percent by the end of the Raising A Reader Program.

The number of participants who said their child(ren) “read” to them the last time they read together, increased by 50 percent.

The number of participants who began going to the library or increased the frequency at which they attended the library increased by 47 percent.

Plans are underway to create space for Family Learning Centers in all new MIHS Family Health Centers as a key initiative of Care Reimagined. Working together and reaching out to the families we serve helps to build a stronger community while also addressing the health care needs of our future generations.

Connecting to Make a Difference The Arizona Legacy Circle provides vital resources for MIHS. The Arizona Legacy Circle is a dynamic group of leaders with a strong connection to MIHS’s history of caring for the community.

On a daily basis, the Foundation is called on by doctors, nurses and program leaders to help fund a need or bridge a gap. In other words, our Foundation often provides a “safety net for our safety net health system.”

A recent story helps illustrate how the Maricopa Health Foundation helps in a time of need. It is for times like this, that your support for the Arizona Legacy Circle is so important.

A father learned his wife and children were in a horrible car accident. The children were brought to MIHS while the mother was taken to another hospital. He raced to Maricopa Medical Center to be with his children with plans of staying in constant contact with his wife’s doctors, family members, his insurance company and others. But, shortly after he arrived, his phone battery died. With numbers stored in his phone and family calling for instructions and updates, MIHS’s Emergency Department team scrambled to find him a back-up power supply.

As a result of that incident, Dr. Eric Katz, Chief of Emergency Medicine, and Dr. Thomas Bostwick, the attending physician on duty that night, reached out to the Foundation to fund a charging station to ease the burden for families in situations like these. The Foundation quickly funded the request and, working closely with MIHS, installed the first MIHS charging station. It has been so appreciated by patients, families and employees, that 20 more are now being installed in key areas of the hospital.

What the Arizona Legacy Circle has achieved in just two years has truly changed and saved lives. As we continue to grow, our collective impact can be a catalyst for change and the continued advancement of our mission.

ROOSEVELT CAMPUS With Kitchell Corporation selected as the general contractor for the $350-$450 million Roosevelt Campus project, the countdown is on for opening our new hospital in 2023. Kitchell’s first major task will be managing the Central Utility Plant, which will be built inside our current warehouse building (2611). Using an existing building saves a signicant amount for the program. Other initial steps include crafting a construction budget and schedule and creating mock ups for various types of rooms.

AMBULATORY CLINIC SITES Our South Phoenix location will likely be built first and serve as the model for the rest of our clinics. The intention is to open and operate our South Phoenix clinic for 90 days to gain lessons learned before starting construction on the rest of the facilities. This will ensure we’re standardizing facilities and operations, so patients know what to expect no matter where they go.

In total, we’ll see seven newly developed clinics and two renovations and/or expansions.

We are still in escrow on our sixth property in Chandler, and the search continues for our seventh and final new location in Central Phoenix.

EXPANDING WEST VALLEY EMERGENCY AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES

In February 2018, Maricopa Integrated Health System acquired the shuttered Maryvale hospital. MIHS plans to reopen the facility as a behavioral health hospital with up to 203 beds and to reopen its emergency department in 2019 to provide the local community access to board-certified emergency medicine physicians 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The new emergency department and behavioral health hospital are expected to open in Spring of 2019.

Before its closing in December 2017, the Maryvale hospital’s emergency department had more than 40,000 visits annually.

“I donate to the Maricopa Health Foundation because they stay true to their mission by helping our patients in need.

My most recent interaction with the Foundation has been the most influential. After a tragic trauma, the ED providers realized there was a need for phone chargers for various types of phones to help our families while their loved ones are being treated in our healthcare system.

We reached out the Foundation to assist, they responded immediately. We have placed 10 phone chargers in patient care waiting areas with 20 more to be delivered.
