Established in 2003 CopaBall is Valleywise Health Foundation’s (Formerly Maricopa Health Foundation) largest annual philanthropic event and fundraising gala.

Proceeds in 2019 will support innovative burn care, teaching and community health programs at Valleywise Health.

ALL IN for

Valleywise Health is the Valley’s public teaching hospital and safety net health care system that has served the greater Phoenix area for more than 143 years. Valleywise Health is partially funded by the Maricopa County Special Health Care District to ensure services for safety-net patients.

Nearly 60 percent of Valleywise Health patients are safety-net patients enrolled in a government health insurance program for low income people, or who have insufficient private insurance or no insurance.

To Valleywise Health!

You may have noticed the following phrase on your CopaBall invitation: “A new chapter begins.” These words ring especially true tonight, as we are in the initial phase of launching our new brand, Valleywise Health. We believe our new brand aptly expresses the reach of our services across the Valley, plus the wisdom we apply in delivering exceptional patient care, without exception, and in the teaching and training of physicians and other health professionals.

I’m now often asked what our logo stands for. Clearly, you can see the letter “V” within the logo, reminding people of our presence across the Valley. More importantly, people see the shape of a heart within the logo, which speaks to our enduring value of compassion that we seek to bring to every patient we treat. Others also see the act of an embrace at the top of our logo – another expression of human compassion in a time of need.

Doubtless, a new chapter has begun in how we are presenting ourselves and how people understand the tremendous value of the Valley’s only public teaching health system. But along with the excitement and optimism of our new chapter we also must remain faithful to our legacy of exceptional care, especially for safety net patients who are financially challenged and at risk due to numerous other social determinants. This exceptional legacy stretches back more than 140 years when Phoenix was evolving from a small town in the desert to what today is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation.

As we move forward in this new chapter, I believe one of the most essential ingredients in the success of our new brand is you. Valleywise can trace its roots back to a “pest house” taming contagious diseases in the wild west that was Arizona in 1877. It’s been a long time since those early days before statehood – to the Valleywise Health of today – a nationally recognized teaching hospital with world-renowned burn and trauma centers, and the designated community health provider for our most vulnerable neighbors.

Unlike other health systems... more than 60 percent of Valleywise Health patients are financially vulnerable, and public dollars cover just a portion of the uncompensated care we provide.

As the nonprofit partner of Valleywise Health, Valleywise Health Foundation helps bridge the gap between building funds authorized by Proposition 480 in 2014, and the costs of new and expanded programs to address the Valley’s unmet community health needs.

Launching in 2020, our ALL IN for Valleywise Campaign will support unique Valleywise Health programs in areas of distinct responsibility for our public teaching health system for ALL. They include:

Addressing Arizona’s Health Care Shortage – Valleywise Health is a public teaching hospital with one of Arizona’s largest and longest running physician training programs. More than 400 full-time physician residents (graduates of more than 60 medical schools nationwide) 875 medical students, 260 rotating medical residents and nearly 2,000 nursing and allied health students train with us each year. Valleywise offers 13 high-demand physician residency programs – ranging from emergency medicine to adult and child psychiatry. In fact, in 2018, more than 1,700 medical school graduates applied for just 14 residency spots in our Emergency Medicine program.

Arizona is the 4th fastest-growing state… but ranks 44th in the country in total active primary care physicians; meeting just 41.7% of its need.

To help address this critical Arizona issue, Valleywise Health joined the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance, with District Medical Group (DMG), Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Creighton University. The Alliance is now one of Arizona’s largest Graduate Medical Education providers, playing a major role in the training of new generations of physicians and other health care professionals.

Kristy Siefkin Kristy Siefkin is an Emmynominated reporter and evening weather anchor for Fox 10 News. Her unique ability to both educate and entertain has made her a favorite with valley viewers, earning her the title “Best Weather Personality” in several valley publications.

When Kristy’s not busy chasing Monsoon storms, she’s chasing compelling stories; reporting on everything from medical breakthroughs to political debates to the environmental concerns.

Kristy’s career in television began in San Francisco, where she worked as a video journalist and weather anchor.

There she covered several national stories, including the end of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Occupy Wall Street Movement. Prior to her career in broadcasting, Kristy was a national spokeswoman, corporate trainer, and multimedia producer for the AKC and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Kristy graduated Summa Cum Laude from Duke University with a BA in Psychology and holds an MA in Multimedia Communications from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

When the studio lights are off, Kristy loves to volunteer with youth and animal charities, test recipes from Bon Appétit, and cheer on her Duke Blue Devils.

2019 Physician of the Year

Kevin Foster, M.D. When Dr. Kevin Foster took a Peoria school teacher to the operating room, he didn’t know he would be making medical history and changing the — future for victims of necrotizing fasciitis everywhere.

In 2018, Christin Lipinski, 37, developed flu-like symptoms and pain under her arm. Surgeons at the Valleywise Arizona Burn Center found she was infected with a vicious, strain of Streptococcus bacteria.

“Once we were in the operating room, we realized it was much, much worse than we thought,” Foster said. The aggressive bacteria had spread from her arm down most of her left torso.

To stop the spread, Foster and his team quickly removed the infected tissue.

“The infection was so deep we basically cut down to muscle.”

Foster would ordinarily repair such large wounds with skin grafts from another part of the body. But the bacteria had already eaten away one third of Lipinski’s skin, so she couldn’t afford to lose more.

The spray, developed as a treatment for burn wounds, had never been used to treat this aggressive bacteria.

To make the spray, doctors take a small patch of skin from another part of the patient’s body. A special enzyme is used to break the tissue into individual skin cells, which are then sprayed in a fine mist over the wound.

To Foster’s surprise, the FDA quickly granted approval. He and his team immediately began treating Lipinski with ReCell in combination with a meshed autograft – a piece of skin from Lipinski’s thigh that was pierced with small holes to make it stretch over a larger area.

When burn nurses removed Lipinski’s dressings a week later, they were shocked to find the wound had already 95 percent healed.

“We think the skin spray made a real difference in her recovery and in her appearance,” Foster said.

Running out of time and options, Foster decided to appeal to the FDA for compassionate use of an experimental skin spray called ReCell.

Today, Lipinski is back to teaching full time and caring for her three children with her husband.

She also volunteers at the Valleywise Arizona Burn Center.

Despite the near-death experience, Lipinski considers herself fortunate.

The unassuming physician came to Valleywise Health in 1999 and worked closely with the late Dr. Daniel Caruso to transform the Arizona Burn Center into an internationally recognized center of excellence in burn care and research.

He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also has a master’s in business administration.

“People have lost limbs,” Lipinski told azfamily. com “I was so lucky not to lose limbs. It has killed people with really weakened immune systems.”

Earlier this year, he was honored as the 2019 MIHS Physician of the Year by his colleagues at Valleywise Health (formerly Maricopa Integrated Health System).

Lipinski’s remarkable recovery put a national spotlight on the Valleywise Arizona Burn Center for its groundbreaking research into new treatments for burn and other skin injuries.

In doing so, Dr. Foster and his colleagues are offering new hope for burn patients and others injured by rare and deadly skin diseases.

Dr. Foster also was honored with the Phoenix Business Journal’s 2019 Health Care Heroes award for innovation.

“The Arizona Burn Center is renowned for its research. I am honored to work with such a fantastic team of professionals who are dedicated to improving burn care and to giving burn survivors a chance at better lives,” Dr. Foster said.

2019 Physician of the Year Yet Dr. Foster’s true “15 minutes of fame” came thanks to a spunky 9-year-old burn survivor and pop icon Taylor Swift.

He gained international attention in 2018 for his role in the amazing case of Isabella McCune, who was severely burned in a fire pit accident at her family’s north Phoenix home. Taylor Swift visited Isabella at the Arizona Burn Center, and the girl’s close relationship with Dr. Foster made the front pages of USA Today and the Arizona Republic.

“Dr. Foster is helping me get better,” Isabella explained to the Republic’s Karina Bland, who followed the case for a year. “I couldn’t do all this without him.”

Dr. Foster still smiles when he recalls the tightly controlled visit by Swift and her parents.

“Taylor Swift hugged me,” he says. “It’s something I tell my kids often. I’m not sure they’re impressed.”

Foster’s humble manner belies an unshakeable commitment to improving care for patients like Isabella.

Behind the headlines, Dr. Foster has quietly blazed a trail for new burn treatments that have improved outcomes for burn survivors everywhere.

The Arizona Burn Center boasts a survival rate of 98 percent – even though surgeons see some of the most complex medical cases – from firefighters severely injured in a battery explosion to patients suffering rare disorders like necrotizing fasciitis and Stevens Johnson syndrome.

Under Dr. Foster, the Arizona Burn Center also is advancing burn care through: Clinical trials of StrataGraft regenerative skin tissue or “artificial skin.”

A $1 million Department of Defense grant for military burn research to treat lung injury due to smoke inhalation and burns.

The sad reality is that there have been very few advancements in burn treatment in the last three decades. But thanks to the innovative spirit of Dr. Foster and his team, there have been significant breakthroughs in the last few years that are benefiting burn patients around the world.

When Carol Carpenter began her nursing career at Valleywise Health in 1992, she thought her new job would be a temporary one.

Nearly 30 years later, Carpenter’s role at Valleywise Health Medical Center as an RN and a clinical educator is so much more.

2019 Nurse of the Year

Carol Carpenter, RN, BSN “It’s not just a job – it’s who I am,” Carpenter, RN, BSN, explained. “I’m an RN first, whether I’m working in a hospital or in my everyday life. I identify with that role.”

Carpenter is one of the most well-known and beloved nurses at Valleywise Health.

She worked in the Medical Intensive Care Unit from 1994 to 2007 and then was tapped to transfer to the health care system’s first Center for Clinical Excellence. She has been a clinical practice educator ever since, working alongside newly qualified staff to support them as they make the transition from student to qualified nurse or working with established nurses to learn new skills. She is a role model, coach, teacher and mentor.

“Carol is a positive reflection of everything we do to improve patient care,” said Sherry Stotler, Valleywise Health Chief Nursing Officer. “I find her to be very dedicated to Valleywise Health and I credit Carol with raising the professionalism of our nursing staff.”

Carpenter’s achievements, passion and commitment were recognized with the Valleywise Health 2019 Nurse of the Year title, the top accolade for nursing.

Yet the unassuming mother of two hardly looks for the spotlight.

“I enjoy my job so much, I don’t feel like I need to be recognized for the work I do,” Carpenter says.

With a nationwide nursing shortage and a wave of retirements of seasoned nurses, Carpenter might have one of the most important jobs in the health care system.

She and other nurse educators play a vital role in ensuring that the next generation of nurses is prepared to meet the growing demand for healthcare services. They also provide training and information to other nurses and can help streamline processes and identify opportunities to improve patient care.

“Nobody’s perfect, and everything changes,” Carpenter explains. “We can always be better. We can always find better ways.”

She adds, “I love to see our nurses be successful professionally.”

At Valleywise Health, Carpenter oversees a critical care nurse residency to train future ICU nurses. The program is so in demand that it will expand to three times a year in 2020 from the present two 12-week classes.

“It’s very rewarding to see a nurse who starts as a graduate nurse and then continues to hone their skills,” Carpenter says. Originally from Decatur, Illinois, Carpenter today lives in Glendale with her husband, John, and their two teen-age children, Amy and Brad.

While Carpenter has seen many changes at Valleywise Health over the last 30 years, she says the needs of the patients remain the same and the “Copa spirit” of caring for the least fortunate among us endures.

It’s what keeps her coming back, day after day, year after year.

“This is my calling. I’ll always be here,” Carpenter says.

A Legacy of Impact in Arizona Begins…

In the spring of 1973, Carol Bidstrup of the newly created Arizona Kidney Foundation called a group of friends together for the first organizational meeting of a Women’s Advisory Board. With two young sons inheriting kidney disease, it was Carol’s goal to bring awareness to and support for this debilitating disease. With the help of her friend, Margie Denton, the Women’s Advisory Board was created to raise monies, and support kidney research, patient education and serve the financial needs of Arizona’s kidney patients.

Ties to Valleywise Health go back to the beginning, with Suzy Charlton, wife of the beloved, longtime MIHS physician, Dr. Kipp Charlton, a member of the founding Women’s Advisory Board.

Their first attempt at fundraising was to collect yellow and green stamps from friends, glue them in books and redeem them for cash. Fundraising ticket sales to horse shows, garage sales and auctions followed into the late 1970s.

And Then Came Erma…

In 1971, Erma Bombeck, her husband Bill and their three children moved from Ohio to Paradise Valley, Arizona. In 1979 she was asked to give her support to the Women’s Board and its mission.

A friend of many board members, Erma proposed the first Authors Luncheon in 1980, inviting fellow authors and friends from across the country to raise funds and awareness of kidney disease.

Trained as a newspaper reporter, Erma Bombeck was a wife, mother and nationally syndicated columnist featured for years on ‘Good Morning America.’ Erma, herself, had autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disorder.

It was that banner year Erma asked her good friend Phil Donahue to be one of the featured authors at the Camelback Inn. Phil and Erma had long been friends since living across the street from each other while raising their young families in Ohio. Phil came to the first luncheon to support Erma and her friends, but it was his wife, Marlo Thomas, making a surprise guest appearance, who stole the show. Other inaugural authors included Judy Blume and Dr. Lendon Smith. The Authors Luncheon was an immediate success and quickly became a much-anticipated annual event.

The rest is history.

In 1996, worsening health forced Erma to have a kidney transplant, and she died of complications that year. Erma’s husband, Bill, took her seat on stage at the 1996 Authors Luncheon, in honor of his wife, and two sons affected by kidney disease.

Exiting life as selflessly and graciously as she lived it (Erma refused to use her celebrity status to “jump the line” for a much-needed kidney transplant), she left us with more than 4,500 columns, 12 books, countless television and public appearances, and a legacy of optimism intrinsic to her writings.

Each year at the Friends of Erma Bombeck Authors Luncheon, a bouquet of yellow roses, Erma’s favorite flower, is placed at the podium in her honor.

The Arizona Women’s Board Authors Luncheon is recognized as one of the most highly regarded philanthropic literary events in the country. Each year, nationally prominent and accomplished writers discuss their latest releases and offer special commentary on their careers, lives and writing inspirations. Thanks to the success of the Authors Luncheon and the support of the Arizona Women’s Board, services for kidney patients in Arizona rank among the best in the nation. Since its inception, the Arizona Women’s Board has granted nearly $12 million.

In 2010 the Women’s Board received its 501(c)3 non-profit status separate from the Arizona Kidney Foundation and is now its own granting organization. Over the past three years, grants 24

from the Arizona Women’s Board have supported the Valleywise Health Dialysis Clinic with nutritional supplements and transportation, and in 2019 helped launch the Arizona Women’s Board Food Pharmacy program at Valleywise Health with a $50,000 grant.

The Arizona Women’s Board Food Pharmacy will serve a pilot group of patients with diabetes over six months. In partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank and the Valleywise Health Diabetes Clinic, this innovative program aims to improve diabetes outcomes and prevent kidney disease through nutritional instruction, diabetes education and the availability of healthy food choices. Dietary intake, hemoglobin A1C levels (blood sugar control over three months), and quality of life will be monitored during participation in the

program. Food insecurity is a public health problem with many families making a choice between food, medicine or health care.

“We are honored to receive the 2019 Arizona Legacy Award, and excited to launch this innovative new program,” said Arizona Women’s Board President Lynne Love. “The Arizona Women’s Board is proud to continue our partnership with Valleywise Health serving Arizona kidney patients, especially those in underserved communities.”

Two program coordinators head the Food Pharmacy Project: Tina Younger, MD and Sandra Chmelnik, BS, RD, CDE. Their goal is to help at-risk diabetic patients better manage their illness at home.

“Diabetes is the number one reason for kidney disease, and medication is not enough. Food impacts diabetes and diabetes leads to kidney disease. By offering healthy food staples like proteins, cereals, and vegetables to at-risk patients, we aim to make improvements in diabetes and help prevent kidney disease in Maricopa County.

We are excited to embark on a new program addressing food insecurity in patients with diabetes, said Tina Younger, MD. “Thanks to the Arizona Women’s Board, The Valleywise Community Health Clinic – South Phoenix, is opening its doors this month with a pilot program of food education via real food distribution.”

Funds gifted to Maricopa Health Foundation in 2019 were proceeds raised through the 39th Annual Friends of Erma Bombeck Authors Luncheon in November 2018.

“Valleywise Health Foundation is incredibly grateful for all the Arizona Women’s Board does for Arizona.

Their visionary support of our Food Pharmacy program is how true legacy and impact begins,” said Valleywise Health Foundation CEO Nate Lowrie.

“Any time we empower a person through preventative health measures, we’ve made a real difference in our community.”

A Milestone Event…

The 40th Annual Friends of Erma Bombeck Authors Luncheon will take place Saturday, November 16, 2019, at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa. “We are thrilled to bring seven talented and noteworthy authors to the Valley in recognition of our 40th Annual Authors Luncheon,” said this year’s Chairman Susan Doria. “The Friends of Erma Bombeck Authors Luncheon is truly beloved for offering a wonderful afternoon of literary entertainment, all while raising critical funds for Arizona kidney programs.”

Susan Doria has a unique understanding of Valleywise Health’s 140-year-legacy serving the health needs of the underserved. Not only is Susan the 2019 Author’s Luncheon Chairman, but she also worked in senior leadership at the health system for more than five years.

“We know the impact Valleywise Health makes for those in our community who need it most,” she said. “The Arizona Women’s Board is proud to invest in programs that make a difference for kidney health in Arizona.”
