The inaugural Night of Heroes honoree was retired Phoenix police officer and nationally known speaker, Jason Schechterle, and the heroic first responders and medical team involved in his lifesaving care at the Arizona Burn Center. Subsequent events honored retired Navy Special Forces parachute rigger Tim Schlappi, and flight paramedic turned emergency nurse, Derek Boehm, RN and the Valleywise Health trauma and emergency experts who saved their lives. On April 23, 2020, Valleywise Health Foundation made history with its first live broadcast event featuring the miraculous story of 11-year-old burn survivor Isabella McCune. Stephanie & Christian Nielson In 2004, young mom Stephanie Nielson became one of the first “mommy bloggers” when she started an online journal about the gifts of motherhood, traveling with children and creating a family home. Over the next four years, thousands of followers shared in the couple’s joy as their family grew. Their lives changed forever on August 16, 2008, when Stephanie and Christian’s small plane crashed and exploded on impact in the Arizona desert. Over the next four months, their lives and future were in the hands of medical experts at the Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health. Stephanie’s New York Times best-selling memoir, “Heaven Is Here: An Incredible Story of Hope, Triumph, and Everyday Joy” honors many of her heroes in the Arizona Burn Center. Featured on NBC’s Today Show, ABC News, The Oprah Winfrey Network and many more – and followed by supporters around the country and world – hear their heroic story of faith, hope and family firsthand on April 29 – as the Nielsons share their gratitude for the compassionate care by the first responders and medical heroes who saved their lives.

Currently celebrating over 16 years in the auction business, and having raised over $500 million dollars for charity, Letitia Frye h as truly earned her title as America’s foremost “Auctiontainer.” Letitia is able to effortlessly combine her expertise in entertainment, fashion, fundraising and her humanitarian efforts to help so many i n need, and make a difference in peoples’ lives. After a devastating accident in which she was struck by a car while running, leading to a Traumatic Brain Injury, combined with the sudden death of the father of her children, Letitia decided to broaden her span beyond auctions in order to help more people. Ms. Frye is now a motivational speaker and published author of her book NO RESERVE, and believes that her passion for others is the secret to success in work and life. Letitia Frye has spent many years working with orphans in Haiti, Doctors in Hospice, spending time with hospital researchers, rescuing abused and abandoned animals, volunteering at various camps for children, and granting wishes through Make A Wish. She believes the only way to understand the mission of a charity or non-profit is to personally provide time and effort to help those in need. Letitia received the prestigious Babe Caylor Leadership Award in 2017 for her work with LGBTQ youth. Her most humbling honors have come with having two of the awards she received, that are now named after her, The 1N10 Letitia Frye Excellence in Fundraising Award, and the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital Letitia Frye Humanitarian Award. Although she works all over the United States and outside of the country, Letitia calls Scottsdale her home. Letitia has two beautiful children, whom she accounts for helping her to tackle every obstacle that has come in front of her, and for her continued success in all fields of her career.

Dr. Salvatore Lettieri Dr. Salvatore Lettieri is the Chair Emeritus of Plastic Surgery at Valleywise Health Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. As a Mayo Clinic Faculty member, he serves this role as a joint venture between the Mayo Clinic and Valleywise Health Medical Center. In this role, he provides education for the Plastic Surgery Residents from Mayo Clinic Rochester and Arizona as well as the ENT Residents from Mayo Clinic Arizona. This allows Dr. Lettieri to concentrate on facial trauma and extremity salvage in addition to burn reconstruction and skull base surgery which provides a complementary experience for the residents. Dr. Lettieri is a graduate of the Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine. This was followed by General Surgery and Plastic Surgery Residencies at the Mayo Clinic Rochester and Craniofacial and Microsurgery Fellowships at Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He currently serves on the AONA Education Board and has been actively involved in courses both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Kevin N. Foster Dr. Kevin Foster is board certified by The American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He did his training at the University of Wisconsin followed by a fellowship in Burn, at The University of Washington in Seattle. He currently holds a faculty appointment with the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine as a Clinical Professor of Surgery. He serves as the Chief of Burn Services at The Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix and is the Director of Surgical Research at Valleywise Health. Dr. Foster is actively involved in all aspects of innovative burn research and clinical studies and continually lectures to the specialized burn population throughout the United States and abroad. He served as the Program Director for the Department of Surgery’s General Surgery Residency Training Program for 8 years and continues mentoring the students and residents at Valleywise Health.

A Tribute to
Dr. Dan Caruso 1 9 6 3 -2 0 1 7
On Friday, August 25, 2017, Dr. Daniel Caruso lost a determined, fourteen-month battle with cancer. He was 53. As one of the co-founders of the Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health (formerly Maricopa Integrated Health Systems), he cared for hundreds of patients, including Stephanie and Christian Nielson. Dr. Caruso graduated from the MIHS surgical residency program in 1998 and was the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at District Medical Group from 2006 until his death. He was devoted and fiercely loyal to his Department, and was an outstanding critical care/burn surgeon and passionate surgical educator. Dr. Caruso was a fervent advocate of the residents he helped mentor to their promise and potential. His dedication to the surgical training of the next generation will continue to pay forward as part of his legacy, through the exceptional alumni of the Valleywise Health surgical residency program. He always challenged his residents to look at the medical care they provide through the eyes of a patient.
