As Principal of Maria Regina High School, I am delighted to share with you a snapshot of the remarkable year we ’ ve had a year filled with academic achievement, inspiring examples of student leadership, and the deep bonds of our faith-filled community I continue to be moved by the strength of our Maria Regina family, all of whom make our alma mater a place of excellence, compassion, and purpose
I am also excited to introduce what we hope will become an annual alumnae communication, keeping you connected to the life and growth of our school Whether you submitted class notes, agreed to be spotlighted or took part in the voting process to name the Queen’s Banner II, this inaugural issue reflects the many contributions of our fellow alumnae.
This past year, our students have excelled both inside and outside the classroom From numerous academic distinctions to honors in the arts and many athletic triumphs, they have demonstrated academic curiosity, determination and superior leadership skills Our seniors continue to achieve impressive college acceptances and merit scholarships, reflecting not only their hard work but also the support of an exceptional faculty that challenges them to think critically and innovatively every day. We are proud to see our students embrace their calling as young women of faith, inspired by Christ’s teachings
Our commitment to continuous improvement remains at the heart of our mission. This year, we introduced several new programs designed to enhance our students’ educational experience and equip them with the skills they need for success in today’s world Among these are our Financial Literacy initiatives, and the introduction of the AP Capstone program, one of the most competitive academic programs available to high schools around the world. We expanded Service-Lear ning projects, affir ming Maria Regina’s mission to instill a lifelong commitment to service, while deepening our students' understanding of social justice.
As we reflect on all that has been accomplished, I am grateful for the unwavering support of our community whose generosity and belief in our mission make these achievements possible Since becoming financially independent, Maria Regina relies on your support to maintain affordable tuition and to sustain our programs. Every contribution helps us build on our successes, provides more scholarships, and ensures that our school remains a vibrant place of lear ning and growth.

It is my honor to connect with each of you as we celebrate a year of remarkable achievements at Maria Regina I am privileged to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees, and I am deeply grateful to the alumnae, families, and friends whose support strengthens our mission and fuels our future. Together, we carry forward the legacy of empower ment, academic excellence, and faith-based education that has shaped so many generations of Maria Regina women.
Many of you may not know that Maria Regina High School became financially independent from the Archdiocese of New York. My own jour ney from Maria Regina to law school and beyond is one I hold dear After graduating with the Class of 1971, I pursued a career in law, with roles ranging from teaching as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham Law School to my current role serving as General Counsel for The Province of St Mary of the Capuchin Order One of my greatest joys has been retur ning to Maria Regina and giving back to the place that helped me grow in confidence and conviction
For more than 20 years, I have had the privilege to contribute to this incredible community as a member of the Alumnae Association, as well as the Board of Trustees. W ith each role, my love for Maria Regina has deepened, and so has my admiration for those who share our commitment to empowering young women through Catholic education. I see in today’s students the same promise that shaped my life, and I am proud to work with a team so dedicated to nurturing their potential

Maria Regina High School, the library ’t just a place to find books; it has nsfor med into a war m, welcoming hub reativity and connection, thanks to our nted librarian, Ms Lauren Melissa Ellzey Since retur ning this year, Ms Ellzey has completely reimagined the library space, creating a comfortable and organized environment that students love to visit. W ith comfortable seating, thoughtfully arranged book displays, and even a chess set, the library now feels like a second home where students can gather, explore, and discover new interests
Her passion for fostering a love of reading shines through in her innovative events, like this fall’s “Pumpkin Spice Book Tasting.” This seasonal favorite brought students together around tables heaped with a selection of novels from diverse genres, each promising a new jour ney to explore W ith a war m drink in hand, students sampled these books, sharing their excitement and thoughts with each other “Picking up and reading a good fit book is about more than just reading the back cover blurb,” Ms. Ellzey shares.
In the library known to us as The Sisters of the Resurrection Infor mation Center, Maria Regina students came together around a curated selection of novels, and felt firsthand that a good book is something we can share as a community. Even better, our Tigers were able to compare their interests to those of their peers
Ms. Ellzey’s library isn’t just a place to read; it’s a space for exploration and communitybuilding Through activities like her themed book tastings, students get a taste of different genres, sampling novels for a few minutes, while jotting down impressions This process allows them to step outside their comfort zones and consider books they might never have chosen otherwise The hope is that by sharing these experiences, students will bond over literary discoveries, sparking new conversations and friendships.
Adding to the lively environment, Ms Ellzey added a chess set that has become a fixture in the library On any given day, you might find her or a pair of students engaged in a friendly match, drawing others into the game The fact that Ms Ellzey is known to join in on a game just adds to the war mth and welcoming atmosphere she has created
W ith her vision and commitment, Ms. Ellzey has transfor med Maria Regina’s library into a space that encourages students to explore, connect, and grow. Her work is a testament to our school’s mission to inspire the whole person, both academically and personally. Through her thoughtful approach, Ms Ellzey not only ignites a love for reading but also fosters a community where students can thrive. Honor Roll Ranking
We are thrilled to share the exciting news that Maria Regina High School has been awarded the AP Gold with Access Honor Roll ranking by the College Board for the 2023-24 school year. This recognition affirms our commitment to nurturing academic excellence and expanding access to advanced coursework for every student. As we celebrate this achievement, we are proud to be among the top 7% of high schools nationwide and the only all-girls high school in Westchester and in the Archdiocese of New York to reach the coveted Gold level with access.
The AP Gold with Access Honor Roll celebrates schools dedicated to providing equitable access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and our Maria Regina community has embraced this mission wholeheartedly Principal Maria CarozzaMcCaffrey, Class of ’99, shares, “This distinction honors our commitment to provide every student with opportunities for advanced lear ning, empowering them to reach their highest potential.”

Maria Regina stands out as the only high school in the Archdiocese to offer AP Music Theory, and our students in AP Drawing and Design have achieved an outstanding 100% Mastery rate over the last three years
Science, Computer Science, and the Arts, representing every academic discipline the AP Program has to offer Each step of our journey is a testament to the dedication of our students, faculty, and community.
This year, we ’ re excited to debut the AP Capstone Diploma Program, further enhancing our students’ preparation for college-level work and academic distinction in the college admissions process.

On January 6, Maria Regina High School welcomed 11 accomplished young alumnae back to campus for a College Chat with the Class of 2025 Over 120 students attended the event, gaining invaluable insight into the college experience The alumnae shared advice on choosing majors, balancing academics with personal life, and navigating career goals.
A common and heartfelt recommendation was: “Be kind to yourself and give yourself a break.” They emphasized that it’s normal to feel overwhelmed at times, sharing personal examples of stressful moments Their message was clear: it’s okay to cry, but then pick yourself up and move forward Trust that you will end up exactly where you ’ re meant to be

2025 Keivin Bur ns High School Science Teaching Award
Maria Regina High School is proud to announce that Reena Varma P'17, Science Department Chairperson, has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious 2025 Keivin Burns Outstanding High School Science Teacher Award, sponsored by the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh This honor recognizes exceptional teaching in the sciences at the secondary school level, and Ms Varma's outstanding contributions to our science program have earned high praise.
The award includes an honorarium and a commemorative plaque, which will be presented at the annual SSP Awards Banquet in May 2025, at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA
We are thrilled to see Ms Varma recognized for her dedication to inspiring students and fostering a love of science. Marilin Samuelian
’25 Shines in STEM
At Maria Regina High School, students are empowered to explore their potential, embrace challenges, and achieve greatness One remarkable example is Marilin Samuelian ’25, whose passion for engineering has paved the way for extraordinary opportunities and achievements
This year, Marilin was honored with the prestigious 2024 Gold Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Award for Excellence in Engineering. She is among a select group of high school seniors from the northeast region to ear n this recognition, which includes a scholarship and acknowledgment during a virtual awards ceremony in February 2025 This award highlights not only Marilin’s dedication and talent but also Maria Regina’s unwavering commitment to fostering academic excellence and preparing students to excel in competitive fields
Marilin’s jour ney into engineering has been both dynamic and inspiring Out of 650 applicants, she was one of only 120 high school students accepted into the Summer Engineering Awareness Program at Manhattan College, where she explored disciplines like Electrical, Civil, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineering. Her efforts culminated in her team ear ning third place in a structural load design competition
Following this program, Marilin dove deeper into her interests by participating in two advanced sessions of the Mechanical Engineering Summer Institute: • Overview of Mechanical Engineering (July 8–11)
• Biomechanics (July 29–August 1)
Each program enriched her understanding of engineering principles and real-world applications, ear ning her certificates of completion and reinforcing her confidence in pursuing a career in STEM.
Beyond these achievements, Marilin also completed the year-long ACE Mentorship Program (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering), during which she worked on a real-world design project focused on the new power substation at JFK Inter national Airport This mentorship connected her with industry professionals and broadened her insights into design and construction
Reflecting on her jour ney, Marilin shared: “These programs have been incredible lear ning experiences. They’ve given me not just technical knowledge, but also the confidence to pursue my passion for engineering.”
Marilin’s story is a testament to how Maria Regina nurtures leadership and self-assurance in its students, offering programs and opportunities tailored to each student’s unique talents and interests By fostering a supportive and inspiring environment, Maria Regina equips its students to pursue their dreams boldly and become trailblazers in their chosen fields

Maria Regina Excellence
Diana, a senior from Mahopac, embodies the passion and leadership that thrive at Maria Regina As Vice President of the Albanian Club and Mission Outreach and Treasurer of the Italian Club, Diana has embraced the values of service and community. Academically, her love for architecture led her to excel in Maria Regina’s architecture class and complete a summer course at NYU
Last month, her dream became a reality when she was accepted Early Decision to NYU, where she’ll study Urban Planning and Architectural Design. Diana’s determination and drive have paved the way for her success, and we are thrilled to see her embark on this exciting journey. Diana’s achievements reflect the strength of Maria Regina’s mission, and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.
Meet Olivia ’25: A Testament to Hard Work
Olivia, a Bronx native, exemplifies the determination and spirit that define Maria Regina High School. A member of STUCO, the National Honor Society, the Science NHS, and the Italian NHS, Olivia shines in her academic pursuits. She volunteers at GiGi’s Playhouse, supporting individuals with Down Syndrome and their families, tutors her peers, and balances a 15-hour work week during the school year
Her talent has made her a vital part of Maria Regina’s spiritual life. As a cantor and a
leading member of the Choral Ensemble, Olivia’s voice has inspired and uplifted the entire community.
Olivia’s academic commitment reached new heights when she earned a full-ride scholarship to Holy Cross College through the QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program At Holy Cross, she plans to study psychology with a minor in education, combining her passion for understanding human behavior with her commitment to helping others We are so proud of Olivia and excited to see her make a difference in the world!
Meet Ciara ’25: A Passion for Helping Others
Ciara, from Bronxville, is a shining example of talent and dedication. A member of the National Honor Society, Science NHS, and Art NHS, Ciara has excelled academically while participating in the Italian Club, Mission Outreach, and Gaelic Society Her talents extend beyond the classroom she has competed in Irish dancing since the age of 3, placing 3rd in the prestigious Mid-Atlantic Region Oireachtas and qualifying for the World Championships seven times.
Inspired by her anatomy studies at Maria Regina, Ciara discovered a passion for nursing. This dedication led to her acceptance into the highly competitive Egan School of Nursing at Fairfield University Known for her warm and engaging personality, Ciara is destined to bring compassion and excellence to her future patients
A Tigers’ Heart for Service: Students Embrace All Saints Day & Tradition of Giving Back
This past All Saints Day, on Friday, November 1, 2024, Maria Regina High School continued its annual Day of Prayer and Service, with 486 young women leaving their classrooms to participate in hands-on community projects across the region. This year ’ s theme was especially fitting: extending hearts, hands, and talents to help those in need, both close to home and globally. The day underscored the school’s commitment to service, a core tenet of a Maria Regina Catholic education, while giving students an invaluable opportunity to connect with each other and make a difference
Senior Morgan Avelli shared, “Getting together with other girls from the Maria Regina community to create new memories through service was truly a blessing I felt that we were a part of something bigger.” For Morgan and many others, the experience was both transfor mational and a moment of unity, bringing the school community closer through a shared purpose
Building Tradition Through Prayer and Service - This Day of Prayer and Service began four years ago as a way for students to re-engage with hands-on service experiences that had been interrupted during the pandemic Today, it has become a highlight of the school year Principal Maria Carozza-McCaffrey, a 1999 alumna, expressed the school’s excitement at the program ’ s growth, saying, “Our students embraced the opportunity to think outside the box, extending their contributions to a variety of meaningful causes. ”
The day began with a mass led by Father Donald Kaufman from St. Peter’s Parish in Yonkers, establishing a spirit of reflection
and gratitude. Eucharistic ministers from among the students supported the liturgy, and guest speakers inspired everyone by sharing their own jour neys in service. The Mass provided students with a moment to inter nalize the values of faith, unity, and charity that guide their work throughout the day
HIGHLIGHTS:
Impacting Local Communities Students divided into groups to assist at local organizations, immersing themselves in projects that meet urgent needs in Westchester:
• HOPE Food Kitchen in New Rochelle: Maria Regina students assembled care packages to support one of Westchester’s largest food kitchens, gaining first hand insight into food insecurity and the importance of local nonprofits
• The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester: Students helped sort clothing donations, preparing essentials for children and teens, making a significant difference for families in the area
• GiGi’s Playhouse in Ardsley: Seniors partnered with GiGi’s Playhouse to create an awareness video about Down Syndrome, promoting understanding and acceptance in the community
• Hillside Food Outreach in Mt. Kisco: Freshmen crafted cheerful placemats to bring war mth to the dining experiences of Hillside’s homebound clients. The senior class also took the lead by representing Maria Regina’s mission of compassion through their work at local organizations
• Topfield Equestrian Center in Cold Spring: Students supported equine therapy
programs and engaged in stable upkeep, painted railings, while lear ning about the therapeutic benefits the horses provide for people with disabilities
Global Outreach ~ Inspired Action
The spirit of service reached beyond U S borders as Maria Regina welcomed alumna Moira G Madonia, Class of 1972, who spoke about her organization, Edpowerment, which supports educational initiatives in Tanzania Inspired by her work, the junior class partnered with Casa de la Solidaridad to create fabric pouches for feminine hygiene products that will hold the handmade sanitary napkins made by the young women in Tanzania. This act of solidarity fostered a sense of empathy and global awareness Additionally, guest speakers like Brian Harrington from Elizabeth Seton Children’s Center and alumna Kiera O’Connor ’15 shared stories of service, igniting a deeper understanding of the power and impact of giving
A LEGACY OF SERVICE: Supporting Future Traditions
In addition to the All Saints Day events, Maria Regina students continue to demonstrate their commitment to service throughout the year
Highlights throughout the year include the annual Thanksgiving Drive, where students collect food items for St Peter’s St. Denis Parish, and a Christmas card initiative led by Marilin Samuelian, Class of 2025, to spread holiday cheer to Elizabeth Seton Children’s Center.
Maria Regina’s Associate Director of Catholic Mission and Outreach, Patrice McDer mott, reminded students, “We have so much that we often take for granted This is a chance to give our best selves to
others, close to home and far away ” Maryellen Laino, Director of Campus Ministry, praised the students’ spirit, noting, “Our students are changemakers, living God’s love through their actions.”
Principal Carozza-McCaffrey echoed these sentiments: “This day is one example of the lasting impact our students will have in the world as they bring God’s love to those in need.”
Maria Regina’s Commitment is to their Mission - The All Saints Day of Service is not just an annual tradition; it is a day that embodies Maria Regina’s mission and its impact on the lives of students and the community Service projects and missiondriven activities are woven into the fabric of the school, from supporting mental health awareness initiatives to partnering with local organizations in their ongoing drives and events.
For Maria Regina alumnae, this growing tradition is an invitation to reconnect with their school community and help inspire the next generation Alumnae who wish to participate or contribute to these service activities are war mly invited to get involved

Founder of EdPowerment
It is fitting that alumna Moira Gomez Madonia ’72, is the subject of our most recent Spotlight. She recently visited her alma mater to deliver an inspiring presentation during our All Saints Day Day of Prayer and Service when the entire student body participated in an unprecedented program of helping those in need She spoke of the critically important work of EdPowerment, the nonprofit organization she founded that provides transformative educational support and programs dedicated to helping individuals in Tanzania, particularly the struggles that teenage girls face every day
Following her remarks, juniors proceeded to the dining hall to work with members of Casa de la Solidaridad, who joined us thanks to sophomore parent Mrs Yonkers-Talz Together, they crafted fabric pouches for feminine hygiene products to support the young women in Tanzania
For Moira, the students’ successful undertaking bore witness to the spirit of service to support a worthy cause like EdPowerment for which “ every effort has lifted a life that would have otherwise have been hopeless and filled with frustration.”
Moira says Maria Regina’s education was profound in shaping her life, noting: “It reinforced a faith in a loving God and fostered an awareness of others in need and Jesus’s call to action.” It was a “home away from home where I felt truly comfortable, challenged academically, and enriched by friendships and activities ”
Reflecting on her years there, she recalls the “ war mth of the Christmas concerts and a deep sense of well-being that has stayed with me over the decades.”
Student Life and Favorite Teachers
Moira embraced school life wholeheartedly, actively participating in Student Council,
serving as an accompanist for the Glee Club, and contributing to the yearbook. Her memories include many teachers who influenced her journey, including Ms Luele, her chemistry teacher; Sr. Eulogia and Mrs. Howard who taught History, her favorite subject; and Sr Eustelle, AP English She fondly remembers Sr. Pauline who supported her love of music and Glee Club, and Sr Joan, whose “kindness stayed with me. ”
A Global Perspective on Service
After graduating from Maria Regina, Moira pursued a double major in English and History Because financial circumstances did not allow her to accept entrance into law school, instead she pursued a Master’s Degree in Inter national Management But that decision tur ned out to be a defining moment as the course of study “fostered a global awareness that has played a major role in my life and also taught me an important lesson: Use the opportunities one is given, even if those aren’t what was hoped for ” Initially, she built a career in management and then transitioned into teaching, which led her to Don Bosco High School and Immaculate Heart Academy Her commitment to education eventually blossomed into a greater calling
In 2009, she took a pivotal journey to Tanzania, where she volunteered to teach English at a roadside center for teens W itnessing the challenges these young people faced, she felt compelled to help beyond her visit This experience inspired her to establish EdPower ment
The Impact of EdPowerment
Over the years, EdPower ment has transfor med lives, supporting over 80 young people through higher education and vocational training, with 50 graduates from college and four newly minted medical doctors among them. Through initiatives like trade training and a reusable feminine hygiene program, Moira’s nonprofit has helped Tanzanian youth secure healthier, more promising futures

Powder Puff Game Raises Funds for Cancer Patient Support Services
Students Honored by Greenburgh Town Supervisor
On December 11, 2024, Maria Regina High School students were celebrated by the Town of Greenburgh for their remarkable contributions to the community Under the thoughtful leadership of Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, the students’ compassionate efforts were honored in a meaningful ceremony that highlighted their commitment to helping others.
The event centered on the students’ successful Powder Puff Football Game fundraiser, which was created to benefit White Plains Hospital Center for Cancer Care This entirely student-led initiative was a shining example of teamwork, creativity, and a shared passion for helping others Thanks to the incredible support of Maria Regina’s Assistant Principal Katie Murray, they were able to mobilize the school.
At the heart of the effort was senior Grace Giacinto, whose idea sparked the fundraiser Her deter mination and enthusiasm inspired her fellow organizers Olivia Maskara, Julia Commisso, Megan Donohoe, Sofia Mora-Par malee, and Nicole Seery to rally together, tur ning Grace’s dream into a reality. W ith incredible spirit and collaboration, they mobilized their school, raising both awareness and vital funds for cancer care. Their work resulted in an impressive $1,000 donation to support White Plains Hospital Center for Cancer Care These funds will go towards providing essential treatment, resources, and hope to patients
During the Town Board Meeting, the students were met with war m applause as they received certificates of appreciation for their inspiring efforts. In a truly touching moment, they presented a check for $1,000 to Jill Shulman, AVP of Cancer Services at White Plains Hospital Center, who graciously accepted it on behalf of the hospital Administration and parents of Maria Regina High School beamed with pride as the students’ achievement was recognized Assistant Principal Katie Murray expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Town of Greenburgh for celebrating M R H S students, and applauded Grace, Olivia, Julia, Megan, Sofia, and Nicole for their leadership, compassion, and commitment to making the world a better place.

Operation Teddy Bear Bringing Smiles to Maria Fareri
Children’s Hospital
For 67 years, Maria Regina High School has championed the values of compassion and service, instilling a lifelong commitment of giving back in its students On December 6, alumna Dr. Kathleen Reilly Fallon ’86, a distinguished Foot and Ankle Surgeon and founder of the Heavenly Productions Foundation (HPF), retur ned to campus to inspire the next generation of students through her jour ney of service
Dr Fallon invited over 25 Maria Regina students to join her for a special Operation Teddy Bear project On December 14th,
they proudly delivered the 200 teddy bears they stuffed, to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital as part of the hospital’s 20th Annual Holiday Toy Drive
The drive benefits children spending the holidays in the hospital, while also stocking playrooms that bring joy to young patients year-round
Dr. Fallon’s dedication to service took root during her time at Maria Regina, but her experiences following 9/11 shaped her lifelong mission. While volunteering at

St. Paul’s Chapel near Ground Zero, she provided medical care to first responders and recovery workers Reflecting on that time, she shared, “Being amid all the destruction and devastation was the most emotionally moving volunteer work I had ever experienced. I felt in some small way that I was helping them, and my country.”
This profound experience led to the founding of HPF in 2003 Over the years, the foundation has expanded to serve children locally and globally, providing school supplies, toys, and comfort items to those in need From its beginnings with Heavenly Lullabies to its recent teddy bear initiatives, HPF has touched thousands of lives, reinforcing the importance of service in action
During the bear-stuffing project at Maria Regina, Dr. Fallon inspired students not only with her accomplishments but also with her unwavering passion for making a difference The event exemplified the school’s mission to shape young women into compassionate leaders who live their values in meaningful ways

Under the exceptional leadership of Dr. Laura Ponziani, World Language teacher, Maria Regina’s Italian Program has made bold strides by participating in WorldLangAmerica (formerly ITALengUSA), demonstrating how language education fosters cross-cultural understanding, linguistic proficiency, and academic success.
Launched during the pandemic in 2020, ITALengUSA began as a virtual exchange program connecting students in the U S and Italy to practice Italian and English Now expanded into WorldLangAmerica, it connects hundreds of students globally.
In Fall 2023, our AP Italian students joined this vibrant program, engaging in peer-led discussions on culture, traditions, and daily life This unique opportunity has refined their language skills and broadened their worldviews.
As the only Catholic High School participating in WorldLangAmerica, alongside institutions like Fordham and Syracuse Universities, Maria Regina stands out for its academic rigor and commitment to cultural awareness. Principal Maria Carozza-McCaffrey ’99 shared, “Our Italian Program reflects our mission to enrich the curriculum and prepare students for a globalized world ”

The ceremony was filled with heartfelt blessings and reflections, offering seniors a moment to pause, give thanks, and look ahead with faith and confidence

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
This past academic year, in preparation for the challenges of finals week, the P A W S Club brought some much-needed joy to campus with a visit from the adorable puppies of Guiding Eyes for the Blind and their dedicated raisers! Students, faculty, and staff gathered to learn about this extraordinary nonprofit's mission to provide guide dogs to people with vision loss and discovered ways they can become involved as future puppy raisers. Our Tigers even had the chance to spend some quality time with their new furry friends, making finals week a little less stressful and a lot more memorable!
IGNITING INNOVATION
As they continue to excel in research and innovation, over 250 students presented their research in Maria Regina’s Inaugural Science Symposium this past Spring 2024
Showcasing their creativity and hard work, our Tigers conducted various experiments and presented their projects to the Science Department faculty, distinguished alumnae, and former members of the Science Department. This event highlighted the dedication and talent of our students in the field of science.
RING DAY
On June 12th, we celebrated one of Maria Regina’s most enduring traditions: Ring Day Our Juniors received their class rings and were joyfully welcomed into their senior year. Families, friends, and faculty gathered for a beautiful Mass, followed by a celebratory breakfast in the Dining Hall. This past year ’ s theme, “Light of the World,” served as a reminder of our students’ jour ney to grow in faith and become leaders who inspire others

SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Nicole Bowen ’14
From Maria Regina High School to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr Nicole Bowen ’14 has pursued her passion for science with deter mination and grit. After graduating from Maria Regina, Nicole ear ned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Boston College in 2018 and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Emory University in 2023
Her jour ney began at MRHS, where classes like freshman biology with Mr Graviano, chemistry and physics with Ms Var ma, and AP Biology opened her eyes to opportunities She discovered a particular interest in molecular pathways, finding them fascinating compared to anatomy and psychology, which were less appealing to her As a result, a career in medicine was never in the cards. Nicole recalls how Mr Graviano encouraged her to share her ideas: “He wrote on a test paper, ‘You have great ideas speak up!’” This helped build her confidence, and his “What Real Scientists Do” board at the back of the classroom inspired her to consider a career in research She credits Maria Regina and her teachers for helping point her in the direction she ultimately pursued
Today, Nicole is living her dream as part of the CDC’s prestigious two-year fellowship, the Laboratory Leadership Service, at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) in Atlanta She works with a team researching coronaviruses and other respiratory viruses, analyzing new COVID-19 variants and evaluating vaccine immunity Nicole shared that, though the application process for the fellowship took over a year, it was well worth it Now three-quarters of the way through the program, she truly loves what she is
doing. Once she completes her fellowship, Nicole will be joining NCIRD full-time; her work will focus on developing and improving diagnostic tests for respiratory viruses.
Nicole said that if she were to speak with MRHS students, she would stress the importance of leadership and service values fostered at Maria Regina and encourage them to seek inter nships and hands-on experiences She recently volunteered at the CDC’s Disease Detective Camp, a summer program for high school students, which she noted as an excellent opportunity for aspiring scientists.
An avid reader and proud “Swifty” who recently traveled to New Orleans for a Taylor Swift concert, Nicole’s passion for science and service continues to inspire Her work protecting public health is a true testament to the foundation laid during her time at Maria Regina
SPOTLIGHT: Adriana Zagreda ’20
Adriana Zagreda, a proud member of Maria Regina High School’s Class of 2020, has exemplified resilience and ambition since her graduation Amidst the challenges of the pandemic, Adriana pursued her passion for engineering at Manhattan College, earning a degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Environmental Engineering and a minor in Mathematics Her hard work and dedication culminated in her graduating Magna Cum Laude in May 2024
During her college years, Adriana gained valuable hands-on experience through internships in construction contracting and civil design. These opportunities laid the foundation for her current role as an Entry-Level Civil Engineer in AECOM’s Water Department. AECOM, a global leader in infrastructure and environmental services, is ranked No 1 worldwide for water-related projects.
Adriana’s work focuses on innovative solutions to meet New York City’s growing water demands She is actively contributing to the Kensico Reservoir project, a monumental $1.9 billion initiative by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection This 10-year endeavor involves constructing a two-mile tunnel between the Kensico Reservoir and the world’s largest UV Drinking Water Facility, ensuring enhanced water supply conveyance and critical redundancy for the city Adriana is on-site daily, playing a key role in the progress of this groundbreaking project.

I recently had the privilege of connecting with Regina during a trip to South Carolina for a family wedding True to her kind nature, she went above and beyond by picking up my husband, son, and me from the Charleston airport and personally driving us to our hotel. After dropping off my family, Regina and I spent a delightful hour together, chatting about her remarkable life and career since her time at Maria Regina We even bonded over our shared love of reading!
It was a war m and memorable visit, and I left feeling deeply inspired by Regina’s loyalty to Maria Regina and her genuine kindness As a small token of appreciation, I gifted her some Tiger swag perfect for a true Maria Regina champion. Married to David Friend, who works at Vanity Fair Magazine Nancy is currently a book publisher at Penguin Books for Young Readers, which is part of Penguin Random House. She has her own imprint called Nancy Paulsen Books, where she serves as President and Publisher. Among the most popular titles she has published are Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, a National Book Award winner and New York Times Bestseller; Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt; Thirst by Varsha Bajaj; Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed; and The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by Rafael Lopez This year, she also had the honor of publishing Buffalo Dreamer by Violet Duncan, which is a National Book Award finalist She has lived in New Rochelle since 1990, where she was recently given a Guardian Award at a library benefit

My husband and I are both enjoying retirement after a career in law enforcement I am pleased to say that I have mentored several young women in careers in law enforcement and the military. One of them is my niece who is a high ranking Officer in the U.S. Airforce special unit. I have one grandchild and she is amazing. She is a Sophomore in high school, taking all A.P. classes of which she is on the high honor roll and she works part time as well. She is a joy. Although we have some health challenges life is good and as I think back to my years at Maria Regina I am so thankful that my parents had the good sense to send me there!!

Dr Kathy Reilly Fallon ’86 has been a Foot and Ankle Surgeon in New York City for 28 years In November 2019, she was honored to be invested as a Dame of Malta by Cardinal O’Malley at St Patrick’s Cathedral Following her volunteer work as a doctor at Ground Zero after 9/11, Kathy founded the Heavenly Productions Foundation (HPF) in 2003, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children in need.
HPF’s first project, Heavenly Lullabies –a CD on which Kathy sang and which she produced in memory of the babies of 9/11 – was followed by Heavenly Skies & Lullabies, a songbook and CD supporting children impacted by Hurricane Katrina
Over the past 14 years, HPF has organized school supply drives, donating thousands of backpacks to underserved students, and has hosted toy drives to provide comfort items to pediatric patients all over, including Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital Lear n more about Operation Teddy Bear in the article on page 18

I am a licensed Speech Language Pathologist in New York and Connecticut, specializing in treating severe visual and cognitive impair ments, such as working with students who are blind and have cerebral palsy I was honored to receive the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Innovator Award in 2023. Additionally, I am the author of Sophie’s Special Story, a children’s book that targets speech therapy goals and is one of the few of its kind. Currently, I serve as a Clinical Supervisor at Iona University and have received special training in the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) approach for feeding medically complex children

I’m always here to help if any current or for mer students are interested in pursuing medicine I truly credit my success in the medical field to the strong foundation I received at Maria Regina High School. This year, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Sacred Heart University’s Thomas More Honors Program, where I ear ned a degree in Biology along with minors in Chemistry and Italian Language. I then completed my medical education at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating with an Interprofessional Honors Distinction Currently, I'm in my residency in Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Throughout my jour ney, I’ve been honored with several awards, including the CureSHANK Research Scholarship and the Dr Benjamin Cottone Memorial Scholarship, among others I’ve also contributed to several research publications, including a systematic review on pediatric seizures during anesthesia and a study on caregiver perspectives in drug development for rare diseases. It’s been an exciting and fulfilling path, and I'm looking forward to what lies ahead!

GinaMarie is happy to share that she was honored in Fall 2024 as one of the Women Builders Council’s (WBC) Next Generation of Women Builders This prestigious recognition celebrates rising talent in the construction industry
She celebrated this achievement alongside her STV colleagues, several of whom also received Next Generation and Outstanding Women awards Reflecting on the experience, she shared, “Receiving this award early in my career inspires me to continue striving for excellence and to encourage others to pursue their goals in our field.”

Melany Nunes is a member of the Inter national Corporate Partnerships team at Major League Baseball. She has been with the league for the last 3 years after completing her Master’s degree at Fordham University
Melany is the first to hold her specific position on the league’s dedicated inter national team, supporting sales efforts and partnership execution across the world A typical day includes working on sponsorship tied to baseball’s global events such as the MLB World Tour and the World Baseball Classic
In 2024, her team completed four back-toback inter national events in four months on three different continents - talk about a grand slam! Most notably to date, Melany spearheaded the planning of MLB’s 2024 London Series Partner Trip and successfully facilitated hospitality for chief executives at major blue chip companies.
Melany has participated in MRHS Career Day in the past and welcomes outreach/ networking from fellow Tigers with sports business interests via LinkedIn.

Kristen will always be remembered for her loving heart, sense of humor, and beautiful smile A dedicated Speech Pathologist and Supervisor for the NYC Department of Education, Kristen’s career was a testament to her passion for helping others
She was a proud mother to Lola Marie Toro ’24 and Michael Leo Toro (Stepinac ’27), a devoted sister to Elaine O’Leary Chiappetta ’96 and Tara O’Leary Gasparro ’P24, and a cherished member of the Sacred Heart Church community
Kristen’s legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of her family, friends, and the Maria Regina community May she rest in eter nal peace

Sister Danielle Marie Baran, C.R.
Maria Regina High School fondly remembers Sister Danielle Marie Baran, C R , who passed away on November 8, 2023, at the age of 72. For 27 years, Sr. Danielle served as Principal and Vice Principal, profoundly shaping the lives of generations of students, families, and faculty with her faith, kindness, and commitment to Catholic education.
Sr. Danielle joined the Sisters of the Resurrection in 1972, professing her final vows in 1974 A woman of many gifts, her vocation led her to diverse ministries as a teacher, principal, registered nurse, and Provincial Superior of the Sisters of the Resurrection, New York Province (2020-2023)
At Maria Regina, Sr Danielle was a guiding light who modeled and exemplified the school’s mission of fostering faith, knowledge, and service Her compassionate leadership, tireless dedication, and joyful presence left an enduring legacy. Whether mentoring faculty, cheering at school events, or celebrating the Eucharist, her love for the community was boundless.
Her legacy continues through the Sr Danielle Memorial Scholarship, established to honor her impact by supporting students in need The goal is to raise a minimum of $100,000 for this schilarship, with the first being offered to a member of the Class of 2029
Sr Danielle’s life embodied the charism of the Sisters of the Resurrection: to bring hope, peace, and joy Her spirit remains woven into the fabric of Maria Regina, inspiring alumnae, faculty, and families for generations to come

Mary Hayes (formerly Sr. Mary Justine)
Maria Regina High School honors the life of Mary Hayes (for merly Sr Mary Justine), a cherished for mer Chemistry teacher whose passion for education and science profoundly shaped our community Mary passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and inspiration.
A beloved educator whose photo above was featured in the 1968 Reginian yearbook Mary taught Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics with unparalleled enthusiasm She inspired countless students during her 38-year teaching career. W ith degrees from Fordham and Villanova Universities and multiple National Science Foundation grants, her expertise and love for lear ning were evident in every lesson
After her time at Maria Regina, Mary continued teaching in New York schools, retiring in 1995 Beyond the classroom, she was a devoted parishioner at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a Eucharistic Minister, and an advocate for social justice, championing causes like prison refor m and far mworker rights
We remember Mary Hayes with deep gratitude for her service, faith, and compassion Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the lessons she imparted. May she rest in eter nal peace

A beloved figure whose love and compassion touched every cor ner of our school, Sister Danielle dedicated her life to shaping young women rooted in Charity, Truth, and Service. To honor her legacy, we set an ambitious goal to raise $100,000 to fund a scholarship in her name, ensuring her mission continues to empower future generations of Maria Regina students.
A Legacy of Love
Sister Danielle’s philosophy, inspired by St. John of the Cross “Where there is no love, put love, and you will find love” guided her approach to education and remains a cor nerstone of Maria Regina’s values
A Generous Opportunity to Double the Impact
This year ’ s campaign was made even more impactful thanks to a $50,000 matching gift pledged by two generous alumnae and an anonymous alumnae parent. Every dollar contributed whether $25, $100, or $500 was matched, doubling the impact of each donation and bringing us closer to our $100,000 goal
