these days [ writing by frannie cihunka ] These days feel like climbing a mountain, but I know One day when I look back, I’ll see how far I’ve come And all of the tears I shed along the way will have grown beautiful flowers So for now, I’ll keep that in mind And continue the climb

editorial policy Marian presents Burn, a literary arts magazine that strives to showcase the original art, photography and creative writing of our student body. Burn is published twice a year, once per semester, and we accept submissions from all grade levels. Our submissions are judged anonymously, and those that are selected are subject to minor grammatical corrections. Burn is a forum for creative student expression. Our goal is to give students a place to publish their work and a place to have their peers appreciate their creativity. Burn is published by Graphic Technologies, Inc. For the 2018-2019 school year, there will be 800 copies printed per semester. All titles of pieces and page numbers are set in Kathen font. The writing is set in Avenir Light. The softwares used were Adobe InDesign CS6 and Adobe Photoshop CS6. Our adviser was journalism teacher Mrs. Marsha Kalkowski. For inquiries, contact us at burn@omahamarian.org or write us 7400 Military Ave, Omaha, NE 68134.

the hope in rainy skies [ writing by rylee gregg ]

I’m just a dark cloud pinned down Not meant to be here, but since I am, how can I leave? I’m just shade and rainy skies for all these people passing by They slip away, surely, surely, though I’m trying, I’m innocent But it’s hard to hang around with a raincloud weighing you down I would leave, I really would get out of the way But this can’t be it for me If I’m no more than this, why do I still hope to let go of the rain and be something more?

listen

[ writing by isabella smith ] Listen to me I may not have much to say, But I’ll still make you sit and listen all day I may not have yet lived my whole life, though I know enough to guide you through the strife Listen to me People will hurt you Whether it’s purposeful, or just a mistake This pain is just something you’ll have to take. Unfortunately, it will never vary But all you have to do, is let yourself be wary. Do not remain this way, for they don’t control you. You are stronger than their words. Their actions, too. People will tear you apart, you have to be your own glue. But don’t you worry When you aren’t strong enough to be the glue, I will always be here to pick you up and carry you through. After all, loving you is all a mother’s to do.

it gets harder to love [ writing by naomi delkamiller ]

[ writing by frannie cihunka ] It gets harder to mouth love. Open your When mom dies and dad moves away, it will get harder to love. When baby brother grows up and the dog won’t play, it will get harder to love. It got harder to love. Not because life had changed but because life had changed you. You saw more, felt more, experienced more. A tragedy, a heartbreak, sorrow upon sorrow.

To the pages of words never dared to say To the voice that was never loud enough To the feelings that were never real To the ones who tried to speak up but no one ever listened To the bulldozed and the steamrolled To the voiceless and the shy To the ones who were never good enough For attention, for validation, for love You are good enough You are worthy and important and loved

to the little sister i never had

[ writing by katie corpuz ]

You are mine. Never doubt your worth. Know it. Believe it. Live it. Live each day knowing who you are. Because you were meant to shine Like all of the stars combined. And if you don’t know you are, it’s okay. Stand tall. Be opinionated anyway. Demand what you want and you will receive it. I promise. This world is harsh to those who bend like branches in the wind. And when you just can’t seem to keep up, raise your hand for help. That’s what it’s for. To give help and get help. It may seem impossible sometimes, but there are always Arms to embrace you. You were meant to shine Like all of the stars combined. You are mine.

lightning [ writing by ellie kripal ]

“sky storm” [ photo by isabella pantano ]

As children whenever We’d look up to the skies The lightning would meet us halfway She was clear And cool And bright And comforting She was beautiful But now whenever we look for her She is just out of our reach Somewhere in the clouds Our Eurydice residing in the sky Causing anxiety And fear And longing It is no longer comforting to be around her To hear her To see her To be in her presence But she is still there Waiting Wishing To be called beautiful once more

a tiny sailboat [ writing by kathryn rodis ]

I am a tiny sailboat, Gliding effortlessly into the vast expanse of sea. There are no set coordinates nor a destination, Since that is what a journey is supposed to be. There are days of treacherous storms and constant sense of worry, However, some days there are clear, sunny skies that appear in a hurry.

14

I have no worries or doubts. Just to make sure the endless tide never runs out. But I guess that’s how it’s supposed to be, For a tiny little sailboat, gliding in the vast expanse of sea.

a new box of crayons

[ writing by christina kleinsmith ]

16

Oh so slowly, dawn opens her new box of Crayons. She silently peers inside and breathes the waxy darkness where all her colors hide. One by one by one, the sun! A shiver of amber to light your way, lemon and clementine, a silver smile and she’s off to play, leaving the day star to shine. A sunrise like never before, your faces glow and shadows adore. The sun is drawn with a gliding hand, blue is selected to contrast with the roads and the trees. Evening passes with tangerine and maroon, the face appears from the man in the moon. The sight of pastel fades as blackness takes over. Never fear for there is hope for tomorrow. The next day will bring a splash of delight, but first it is time to bid you goodnight.

greed

[ writing by ellie kripal ]

I want things I want to spend my money on tattoos I want a motorcycle to ride in the summers I want a skateboard and a wall for graffiti art I want to scream from the rooftops And look into the ocean’s eyes from the beach I want summers of memories And things I’ll never get to experience again I want crazy hair colors From turquoise to pink to blue to red to green All so I can start the cycle again

I want the sun Dripping in my hands Painting a beautiful sky on my face as it rises I want everything to matter I want to matter To someone To anyone I want to say I did something amazing I want an urban apartment with a crazy interior With doo-dads and Knickknacks I want to come home to say hi to little plants and perhaps a fish and a cat

I want a CD player To relive the music over and over again Turning round and round Playing the same song with a different meaning each time I want things But I also want to be I want matter I want to matter

“head space [ photo by callie cavanaugh ]

Because in that moment I stop thinking about it And in this place I stop worrying about it The weight is lifted off my shoulders As I slowly forget about it Tears that once streamed down my face Now only come in times of happiness All the pain I endured All the emotional scars Are lovingly healed with grace See our problems sometimes engulf us. But with faith, With hope, And with love, Our solutions are far more abundant, And the joy that surrounds us Is far more overwhelming.

The silence woke me I sensed something as shivers ran up my back I felt it The world at a halt Life as I knew it at a standstill Something unusual The blood pumping through veins My entire body frozen The beating of my heart a rhythm normally unnoticed I felt it Surrounded by complete peace and quiet This serenity terrified my brain I fell back Until the silence woke me again.
