The annual Marian Fund is essential to sustaining Catholic education and ensures our school's viability. It reflects the collective commitment of our entire Marian family to support our shared mission.
By setting up a monthly recurring gift to the Marian Fund, you join the ranks of Marian GEMs making a difference for our students.
The GEM (“Give Every Month”) Program is Marian’s recurring gift option and supports the Marian Fund.
GEMs provide a vital mechanism of support in bridging the gap between tuition revenue and the full cost of providing a Marian education.
ALUMNAE
Dear Marian Community,
As we step into 2025, my heart is filled with gratitude for the enduring spirit of the Marian family—a community that embodies The Marian Way: Now, Forever, and Always.
This time of renewal invites us to reflect on the blessings of the past year and look ahead with hope and purpose. Together, we have celebrated achievements, embraced challenges, and strengthened the bonds that connect us across generations. Every day, our students, faculty, alumnae, and families exemplify what makes Marian so extraordinary—through academic success, acts of service, spiritual growth, mentorship, volunteerism, and unwavering support for our school community.
In this special issue of the Marian Monitor, we honor the traditions that define us and share the 2023-2024 Impact Report, celebrating the generosity of those who have supported our mission. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure ensure that Marian remains a beacon of excellence in Catholic education and a home where young women flourish in mind, body, and spirit.
This year, we continue to build upon the legacy of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), whose vision and dedication established Marian High School 65 years ago. Their mission to cultivate strong women of faith, intellect, and compassion lives on through all that we do.
The theme of The Marian Way reminds us that while times change, our core values remain steadfast. Whether you are a current student, alumna, parent, or supporter, you are part of a story that spans generations and continues to inspire. Your prayers, your service, and your generosity make it possible for Marian to thrive today and well into the future.
As we look to the year ahead, I am filled with excitement for the opportunities that await us. With faith as our guide, strengthened by tradition, and sustained by your support, we will continue to provide a transformative environment where young women are empowered to achieve their fullest potential.
Thank you for your commitment to Marian High School. May this year bring you and your loved ones joy, peace, and countless blessings.
With heartfelt appreciation,

Our judges, alumnae who once were Field Day contenders themselves, share reflections on the energy and spirit that continue to define this beloved tradition.
“The best part for me was being back at the school after 35 years! Participating in this Marian staple was such a flashback. My favorite part was watching the results be announced. All of the excitement was fun. It was my favorite part in 1988, and it is still my favorite part today.”
- Christy Romine Hudgens ’89
“The excitement on the girls' faces was priceless! The experience brought back so many memories! It was such a special day! So happy to be a part of it!”
- Laura Marinelli Jerneycic ’94
“My absolute favorite part of field day was the cheers done by the students in the morning. The girls were so excited, and the school spirit they exuded was contagious! I can remember as a student watching the judges in the stands and hoping one day to fulfill my dream of being one! I was honored to be asked back to Marian to participate in field day and remember how lucky I am to call myself a Mustang!”
- Deanna Skowronski ’06
“I was ‘unofficially’ a part of every field day committee my senior year and received a ‘made up’ award at Senior Dinner for participating in the most Marian related things, including being one of three people who showed up on Senior Skip Day only to work on the yearbook!”
- Hannah Johnson Warner ’13
“My favorite part of field day this year was the senior entrance song and the creativity of the cheers in the morning. It was so special to watch the freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the morning as they eagerly geared up for the exciting day ahead. The energy in the gymnasium was electric and really took me back to the memories of my field days as a Marian student. Field day is such a memorable and time-honored Marian tradition, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate this year as a judge.”
- Allison Tuohy Dolson ’15
The Mustang Spirit was ablaze during 2024 Field Day and Senior Football.
Each year as the seasons change and autumn unfolds, Marian comes alive with the excitement of cherished traditions. These events not only celebrate our vibrant school spirit but also strengthen the bonds among students, alumnae, and the entire Marian community.
From the electrifying cheers of Field Day to the spirited annual showdown against Regina, we are reminded that at Marian, tradition is a powerful, unifying force.
Marian is a truly special place. Across generations, young women have entered this school and, over the course of four years, transformed into strong, fearless leaders who are making a lasting impact on the world. It is a place where young girls grow into confident women who are ready to tackle any challenge ahead.
As a Marian alumna returning in a new role—having graduated just ten years ago—I now have a deeper appreciation for how my own experience, and the experiences of countless others, was shaped by the dedication of so many individuals. Our journeys would not have been the same without the support of the incredible alumnae, faculty, staff, coaches, and parents who make Marian not just a school, but a home. It takes a dynamic, passionate team working together with heart to keep this place running smoothly and ensure that each new generation of young women can thrive.
The Marian Alumnae Association is proud to be an essential part of this team, and we are committed to helping Marian continue to move forward in a direction that honors our rich history while preparing future generations for success. As part of that commitment, we are excited to announce new roles and responsibilities for the Alumnae Association, designed to create more opportunities for alumnae to get involved and share their time, talents, and experiences. We understand that everyone’s life is busy—balancing family, careers, and passions—but we would be honored to have you return to Marian and reconnect with the community that helped shape you.
Being a Mustang is a choice, and we hope you know how deeply grateful we are that you continue to choose this community. Marian would not be the same without you. We are proud of the women you have become, and we look forward to the many ways you will continue to inspire future generations of Mustangs.
Hope to see you soon, Brooke Galli ’14

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM FIELD DAY?
Rosanne Charles Acciaioli ’74 - “The remaking of songs (late 60s to early 70s) was a great time in music. Including the Beatles, Motown, etc.! The tunes were catchy and loved!”
Dawn Tafel Zink ’86 - “My favorite memory from Field Day was winning first place as a junior and beating the seniors. We had an incredible class!”
Sharon Allmen Videtich ’88 - “Winning junior year. Making flowers for the float – after school and at Megan’s house.”
Erin Anderson Wiseman ’11 - “My favorite Field Day Memory was coming in 3rd place my freshman year! The Freshman Flight Attendants soared above the competition!”
Elle Flynn ’13 - “I loved being part of the committees and helping plan for the day. Working with people I wasn't necessarily friends with was always fun for me.”
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM SENIOR FOOTBALL/POWDERPUFF?
Mrs. Acciaioli - “No Senior Football/Powderpuff in my day.”
Mrs. Zink - “I did not take part in Powderpuff, sadly. It's probably one of my high school regrets.”
Mrs. Videtich - “One time during training, I was the fastest of all the linebackers when running around the field.”
Mrs. Wiseman - “Beating Regina of course!”
Ms. Flynn - “I loved my junior year when my friends and I wore costumes and got dressed up for the game.”
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LEARNED AT MARIAN THAT HAS HELPED YOU BECOME THE WOMAN YOU ARE TODAY?
Mrs. Acciaioli - “I had the pleasure of being taught by many IHMs. They instilled in me that the best gift to the world and God is to be yourself and working hard at knowing who you are!”
Mrs. Zink - “So many things...where to start??? Speak my mind; hold my head high and be true to my convictions; be independent; persevere and overcome adversity/work hard and stop complaining about it; don't let others do for you what you should and can do for yourself; I am capable and can overcome it.”
Mrs. Videtich - “The importance of helping each other and being part of a community. How else would we be successful at Field Day, Powderpuff or Model United Nations??”
Mrs. Wiseman - “Marian taught me invaluable lessons that shaped the woman I am today, especially the importance of a strong faith foundation. This foundation not only guided me in developing my personal faith practice during college but continues to support me through life's challenges. The values I learned at Marian remain a source of strength and inspiration in every aspect of my life.”
Ms. Flynn - “At Marian, I learned how to work hard and take pride in my work.”
Mrs. Acciaioli - “My favorite teachers were French Teachers Madame Ruzicska (9th grade through 11th grade) and Madame Dewey (10th grade through 12th grade). They showed me a part of the world and a culture that I still love today. Each was bright, creative, and so loving toward the students!”
Mrs. Zink - “Actually, the person who made the biggest impact on me at Marian was not a teacher; it was Sr. Joan Charnley, the principal. I had (and always will have) profound respect for her and the impact she had on me. She, like most of the nuns back then, spoke quietly but carried herself with such poise and commanded such respect. I'm not sure what most resonated with me, but I just remember being inspired by her and her message: ‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I
can, the wisdom to know the difference, and the conviction to defend my beliefs’ (Sr. Joan always added that final part when she'd speak to us and the parents, so it may have been a little different, but that's how I remember it). I really looked up to her.”
Mrs. Videtich - “Sr. Agnes Joseph Sun! She challenged me but also cared for me as a person.”
Mrs. Wiseman - “The teacher who had the greatest impact on me as a student at Marian was Mrs. Peters. I was fortunate to have her for every class she taught at the school—even study hall—and each experience left a lasting impression. Her classes were challenging, but she approached every lesson with patience and encouragement. Mrs. Peters’ support helped me not only build a strong foundation in writing but also develop study skills that became invaluable during college and beyond. Her dedication to teaching and her ability to inspire confidence in me helped me become the person I am today!”
Ms. Flynn - “Mine's not a teacher. I still remember coming to see Mrs. Riek when I was so worried about one of my classes. I was so afraid to ask her for help, and I immediately felt reassured in her office. That feeling of comfort sticks with me to this day.”
Mrs. Acciaioli - “I was a brown bagger-and still am today!”
Mrs. Zink - “Back then, it wasn't the Student Dining Area with TruFoods...I brought my own lunch.”
Mrs. Videtich - “Going to A&W for vanilla ice cream with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups on top.”
Mrs. Wiseman - “When I was at Marian, the food was not as delicious as it is now, so I didn’t buy often. When I did, I went for the mostaccioli!”
Ms. Flynn - “Chicken patty and fries. Duh.”
Donna Klein Anthony ’79 was on a tour of France this summer and met Betty Zawacki Casazza ’70 on the first night of the same tour. Donna lives in Pennsylvania, and Betty lives in Rhode Island. They were amazed by what a small world it is and spent a lot of time reminiscing about their days at Marian. It is hard to believe they met over 3,000 miles from home!
Helena Bahman Claudius ’95 and Kristi Terbrack Hodges ’97 had a November reunion in Zagreb, Croatia, where Helena lives and Kristi visited. Helena came to Marian as an exchange student during the Bosnian War, which impacted life throughout the former Yugoslavia and Helena’s family in Zagreb (the ’94 yearbook features a story on Helena’s experience). She lived with a Marian French teacher (Madame Haffner) and returned to Zagreb for university after graduation.
Kristi and her husband visited Zagreb for their 18th wedding anniversary this year, and Kristi said it was a treat to see Helena, her gorgeous city, and meet her family. Helena brought her yearbooks to dinner one night, and they had a blast looking through them— she remembers her years in Michigan very fondly. It is a testament to Marian that bonds last across the decades and that no matter where you go in this world, there is likely a Mustang who will greet you with open arms.
Andrea Whedon-Hulbert ’04 and her husband, Rodney Hulbert, welcomed identical twin girls, Blake Hulbert and Collins Hulbert, in June 2024.
Lindsay Woch ’07 got engaged to Jacob Nicholas on the beach in Barcelona while traveling through Europe this summer. The trip also included stops in Lisbon and Paris to watch the Olympics. The wedding is planned for next summer.
Chelsea M. Bliss ’10 and Brent W. Lang are thrilled to announce their engagement. The couple resides in Manhattan Beach, CA. Chelsea is an attorney for Northrop Grumman, and Brent is the Vice President at a marketing firm. A December 2025 wedding is planned.
Grace Hillman ’16 married Daniel Quinn on August 24, 2024 at St. Regis. There were many Marian alumnae in attendance!

With a robust background in athletic administration and education, Campbell brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to the Marian community.
How has your transition been since joining Marian this fall?
I’ve always viewed Marian as the gold standard in women’s athletics. Since joining the Marian community, I’ve been overwhelmed by the incredible support from every corner— parents, students, and colleagues alike. Their kindness and warm welcome have made me feel like I’ve been part of this close-knit community far longer than just five months.
What is your vision for Marian’s athletic program?
I am a competitive and confident woman, so by nature my vision focuses on empowering young women through sports, fostering confidence, leadership, and personal growth to be the absolute best they can be. My vision for our athletics programs aims to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being, with a commitment to inclusivity, health, and wellness. It encourages participation at all levels, from recreational to competitive sports, while emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and school spirit. We’re fostering a program that provides diverse athletic opportunities, including mentorship, coaching excellence, and pathways to collegiate athletics. Ultimately, Marian Athletics is all about building strong, resilient young women who excel both on and off the field.
How do you aim to enhance the experience of our student-athletes?
I plan to honor the school’s rich athletic tradition by preserving its core values of teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship while introducing innovative strategies to elevate the student-athlete experience. Being a former collegiate athlete, I offer a unique approach as I can relate to a lot of the pressures our student athletes currently go through.
I am focusing on fostering a holistic and empowering experience for student-athletes, both on and off the field. This includes integrating Catholic values of integrity, respect, and sportsmanship into athletics, while ensuring a balance between physical, mental, and academic growth. I am working on creating inclusive programs that support athletes of all skill levels, emphasizing leadership development, mental health, and character building. Additionally, I am prioritizing strong coaching, community engagement, and celebrating achievements through school-wide events. Ultimately, my goal is to provide an environment where student-athletes thrive, grow in their faith, and develop lifelong skills for success beyond high school.
You’ve emphasized leadership and personal growth in your career. How will you be integrating these elements into Marian Athletics?
First and foremost, offering opportunities for student-athletes to take on leadership roles within their teams, such as captains and team organizers. These roles build responsibility, decision-making, and communication skills. Additionally, building a mentorship program that promotes a culture of support and shared learning is a key priority, pairing junior and senior athletes with underclassmen to guide them both on the field and holistically through their time as a Marian student.
Character-building is also central, with regular team discussions on values like integrity, respect, and perseverance, helping athletes understand that true leadership extends beyond performance and into personal conduct. We’ll be emphasizing goal-setting by incorporating workshops that help athletes set and achieve both athletic and personal goals, fostering confidence and resilience. Self-reflection is also an important part of the equation through journaling or team conversations to track growth and learn from experiences.
Emotional intelligence will continue to be developed through training on emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and empathy, enabling athletes to manage their emotions and build strong relationships within their teams. We’ll also be providing increased opportunities for athletes to lead in the community, through service projects or charity events, to practice leadership in real-world contexts.
Finally, our program will support personal growth beyond athletics. We will offer guidance in time management, academic success, and career exploration, ensuring athletes develop life skills that prepare them for leadership in all areas. The overall goal is to cultivate well-rounded, confident young women who are equipped with the leadership skills to excel in both sports and life.
Outside of athletics, what are some things about you that the Marian community might not know?
I am a proud mother to two young boys, Beau (6) and Duke (3). My husband, Dan Campbell, and I have been married for nearly 10 years and are college sweethearts. I am also a former collegiate softball player at Central Michigan University, where I set records for Career Home Runs and RBIs.
What are you most looking forward to in the coming seasons?
I am excited to continue supporting our athletes and coaches. Each sport provides a wonderful opportunity to engage with our Marian community, and I look forward to connecting with more of our alumnae. Athletics serves as a meaningful bridge between our school’s rich history and the present, fostering lasting connections and school spirit.

Mary Rogers is a Marian basketball legend. Known for her incredible scoring ability and leadership on the court, she led the team to a 42-8 record in her junior and senior years and was a key player on two state quarterfinalist teams. Mary became the top free-throw shooter at Wayne State University, breaking the school’s all-time scoring record as a senior. A two-time All-GLIAC First Team selection, she was named GLIAC Player of the Week and remains among the top players in Wayne State’s history. Mary’s legacy in Marian basketball and her stellar career at Wayne State earned her a place in the Wayne State Hall of Fame in 2003.
Dr. Jess Deneweth-Zendler was a standout in both the classroom and on the soccer field during her time at Marian. A MHS Valedictorian and MHSAA Scholar-Athlete, Jess’s academic and athletic achievements set her apart. On the soccer field, she excelled as a leader and playmaker, contributing to the team’s success. Jess went on to Washington University, where she continued her academic and athletic pursuits, earning her PhD in Kinesiology & Mechanical Engineering. Her exemplary work in both athletics and academics showcases the Marian ideal of developing students who excel in all areas of life.
A standout volleyball player at Marian, Alex Cocklin played a pivotal role in the school's success on the court. A four-time All-State selection, she was also named AllCatholic and All-County, earning recognition as one of Michigan’s top volleyball talents. In 2009, Alex led Marian to the state championship with an astounding 77-2 record, setting both the season and career records for kills at the school. Her exceptional performance earned her the title of Miss Volleyball 2009, and she went on to play at the University of Akron, where she was a two-time All-MAC Honorable Mention. Alex’s contributions to Marian volleyball remain legendary, and she is a true pioneer in the program’s history.
A three-time volleyball captain and three-time All-State honoree, Rachel Charles was one of Marian’s most influential players. A key contributor to Marian’s 2009 state championship run, Rachel was named the 2009 Miss Volleyball runner-up and was awarded Gatorade Michigan Player of the Year. Continuing her volleyball career at Lehigh University, she became a three-time Patriot League Libero of the Year and set a career record for digs. Rachel’s leadership on and off the court exemplifies the Marian spirit, and her volleyball legacy has shaped the future of the program.
The third time was the charm for the Marian spikers, as they were able to break through and win the first volleyball title in school history, following finals appearances in 2007 and 2008. Led by Miss Volleyball winner Alex Cocklin and Gatorade Player of the Year Rachel Charles, the Mustangs won 75 straight games throughout the season and defeated Portage Central in four games at the Finals.

The creation of the 9’ x 42’ mural in the 200s hallway began on March 17, 1980 and was completed on June 10 of that year, taking approximately 800 hours over ten weeks. Fifteen talented, dedicated students worked during art class, study hall, and after school to bring this vision to life.
The theme of the mural was conceived, designed, and painted by the following students:
Maureen Connaughton Apap ’82
Kathryn Bannasch ’81
Jeanne Rabaut Burns ’81
Cathy Colosimo Connors ’82
Mary A. Hogan Johnson ’82
Marianne Carniak Key ’82
Stephanie Larkin ’81
Susan Slavsky McHugh ’81
Sandra Ureel Peterson ’81
Beth Carson Reynolds ’80
Carol Stivender Rice ’81
Pat Klucka-Schafer ’81
Margaret Arndorfer Stapleton ’81
Colleen Kelly Sygar ’82
Under the guidance of their art teacher, Lynette Timlin.
The mural comes to life starting with a squeezed tube of paint, forming a rainbow that extends throughout the mural, symbolizing a new beginning.
Stacked books represent knowledge, and the lantern of wisdom drips onto a student reading atop the willow tree that grew between Marian and Brother Rice.
Mountains, water, sun, birds, flowers, and sky depict the connection with all living things, with Marian’s logo emblazoned on the sun. Three students peer through the school’s
Marian values the development of both the mind and the body, depicted through sports teams and performances in the mural.
The culmination of a student’s four years is marked by a diploma, departing Marian’s halls with memories, friendships, and God’s blessings.
The mural pays homage to the longstanding relationship with Brother Rice.
The mural ends as the rainbow flows from a paintbrush, signaling that the story begins anew.
