ocated at Qatar's new Lusail City, Qetaifan Island North is an eco-friendly, luxurious choice for families to enjoy quality time together. The exclusive island has the latest smart technology in exclusive villas and apartments, allowing for the ultimate in comfort and relaxation.

HE Sheikh Nasser Bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani commented 'We have launched a new real estate product for the first time in the Middle East, which is 10 villa plots with access to a five-star operated beach, at competitive prices, and financing facilities for either owners or investors.'

The sales launch of the first phase of mixed use and residential plots began in late 2019, while the second phase was launched in November 2020.

The project has the capacity to accommodate a large number of hotels, retail outlets, restaurants, and unique recreational facilities such as the waterpark and the vast green spaces. Not only this, it represents a commitment to investing in the development of the tourism industry and strengthening the hospitality sector in Qatar. About Qetaifan Island North Project The island is the first and main project of developer Qetaifan Projects, a limited liability real estate development company founded in October 2017 and fully owned by Katara Hospitality, a leading global hotel owner, developer and operator based in Qatar.

Qetaifan Projects aims to support the country's long-term economic vision by building cities with sustainable and intelligent infrastructure.

One of the main attractions is a state-ofthe-art waterpark, with rides inspired by Qatari culture and telling the remarkable story of the oil and gas industry. The Icon Tower is the highest of its kind, reaching 80 m, and is on a smaller, adjacent island, linked by a bridge and approached by a train. The latter will overlook Linear Park, the main artery of the island and which will link all the various zones together. Running through the park will be an artificial Salt Canal, linked to the sea, for activities such as fishing and boating.

Watersports can be also found at the family-friendly Beach Club, which is the proposed first element to be completed on the island. Visitors will have access to a clubhouse, a beach and infinity pool, and a restaurant, gym and spa.

Activities are not restricted to the water though, as the island will have ample boardwalks and lush gardens and lawns to stroll along, as well as tennis courts.

Other new partnerships include Just Real Estate as the sales agent, and Al Boraq Automobiles Co WLL for the supply and construction of electric charging stations for electric cars, as well as a showroom highlighting the benefits of using electric cars and their impact on the environment, located in the beach club.

Qatar National Vision As arguably the world’s fastest‑growing economy, Qatar recognises the importance of diversification and sustainability. It also acknowledges the inherent challenges of a rapidly‑increasing population, further industrialisation, and the resultant need for an ever-expanding infrastructure.

To confront and manage those challenges in an effective manner, an ambitious and far‑sighted policy document, Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030, was first published in 2008. Based on the guiding principles of the Permanent Constitution, it defined the nation’s medium‑to‑long-term objectives and created a framework for sustainable national strategies.

QNV 2030 rests on four pillars – Human, Social, Economic and Environmental Development – each with clearly defined individual long‑term outcomes yet important inter‑relationships.

Qatar’s human capital is recognised as its greatest asset. QNV 2030 stresses the important roles of education, health and sport in expanding the opportunities and capabilities of all the people of Qatar, enabling them to develop and sustain a prosperous knowledge‑driven society.

Under QNV 2030, all new projects should provide a high standard of living for future generations, with investments in education and research, healthcare, transport and industry. This will enable Qatar to sustain its own development by 2030. There are plans for a bold new future with the construction of an integrated transport system, a major overhaul of roads and highways, drainage and sewage, and the renovation of downtown Doha.

The first wave of specific actions and targets in the next chapter of Qatar’s transformation were defined in the Qatar National Development Strategy (NDS) 2011–2016. NDS 2017–2022 was released in December 2017 by HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser

bin Khalifa Al Thani, the previous Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and has been prepared by the Planning and Statistics Authority and other entities.

The strategy includes aspects related to 2022, continued implementation of QNV 2030, economical performance and future prospects. The strategy also includes institutional development, providing services and financial management, strengthening human development, proper social development, sustainable development that preserves the environment, and managing strategic performance.

Economic Strategy Qatar’s Economic Development plans aim to create and sustain a competitive and diversified economy capable of meeting the needs of, and securing a high standard of living for, its population now and in the future.

According to the International Monetary Fund in their Regional Economic Outlook Update: Middle East and Central Asia in April 2020, 'Countries with fiscal buffers such as Qatar are better placed to accommodate rising deficits than those with limited space'. Two new laws introduced in 2018, regarding tenders and public finance, are part of a plan to monitor public expenditures, improving efficiency and enforcing better management of investment spending.

Infrastructural spending is being further boosted in advance of Qatar hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup QatarTM, an event expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors and to increase tourism both before and after the event. The Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs indicates that the demand for workers has been rising ever since Qatar’s bid victory in 2010.

The state budget for 2020 shows a total expenditure of QAR210.5 bn, with major projects again being allocated 43% (QAR90 bn), in key sectors such as healthcare, education and transport. New projects worth QAR11.5 bn will ©

be awarded in 2020, mainly towards major infrastructure projects such as roads and sewage networks undertaken by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).

Qatar’s economy has historically been significantly boosted by growth in the oil, gas and petrochemicals industries. However the government is taking steps to diversify economic development elsewhere, especially in view of lower oil prices. Education, sports, medical and cultural tourism are being developed and Qatar is emerging as a major player in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) market.

Conferences and Exhibitions An influential player in the region’s MICE market, Qatar opened its first major facility in 2011. The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF) and located in Education City, is an iconic venue in terms of design and green technology. QNCC is one of the largest, most technologically advanced venues in the Middle East, employing environmental and sustainability best practices including LEED gold certification.

Designed by Arata Isozaki, the award-winning venue features a 3D representation of the Sidra tree, symbol of QF. The 200,000 sq m venue has a 40,000 sq m exhibition space, a conference hall for 3,800 delegates, a 2,300‑seat theatre, multipurpose halls, auditoriums, meeting rooms, lounges and suites. qncc.qa The Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) opened its doors in 2015. The building sits on a 47,700 sq m site, and includes a state-of-the-art exhibition hall, modular wall system, high-tech meeting and conference rooms, a VIP hosting suite and a vast underground parking system.

Located in Al Dafna, Qatar’s commercial district, the venue has five exhibition halls, which can be used as one exhibition hall totaling 29,000 sq m, thanks to a unique wall partition system.

The 18-metre high ceiling is the highest in the Middle East and is supported by a revolutionary cantilever roof meaning the whole space is pillar-free and more versatile than many other exhibition halls. decc.qa Annual business conferences and exhibitions include: Project Qatar, the trade construction, building, environmental technology and materials exhibition; QITCOM, the ICT‑industry expo; Cityscape Qatar, one of the region's largest real estate events; and MEED Qatar Projects. Qatar has also hosted the Arab Future Cities Summit, the Green Building Expo, and the World Stadium Congress, as well as trade summits and conferences.

Spectacular Buildings Dramatic changes to Doha’s skyline seem to occur in the blink of an eye. Exotically sculpted glass and concrete towers, built with materials imported from all over the world, reach skywards in many areas of the city. A forest of skyscrapers has created a mini‑Manhattan skyline on the capital’s northern shore, each new design complementing and contrasting with its neighbour.

The population has increased from nearly 1.7 mn people in 2010 to just under 2.8 mn in June 2020, mainly living in and around Doha. Just 50 years ago the 20,000 population of Doha lived and worked in single or two‑storey structures bordering the narrow streets of what was just a small town on the southern shore of Doha Bay. In the 1970s, as the country changed from fishing and pearl diving to oil production and export, the decision was taken to reshape Doha Bay, extend the waterfront and expand the town area by reclaiming land. The area now known as Al Dafna (or ‘West Bay’) was dredged from the sea and the first building was the pyramidal Sheraton hotel – an iconic structure at the time and one which is now dwarfed by the plethora of other hotels, office towers and apartment blocks nearby.

As the demand for prime town centre real estate has grown, and the population seeks ever‑more luxurious living and working environments, the city has been forced upwards. Old Doha’s traditional inward‑looking, small‑windowed, courtyard dwellings have been replaced by multi‑storey office, residential, and mixed‑use blocks as building technology has developed. The old stone houses of the 19th century – cooled naturally or with the help of a wind tower and vented walls – reflected the limitations of building materials and affordable or available technology at the time. The huge glass walls on many of the new edifices reflect global developments in glass technology and energy‑efficient, eco‑friendly air conditioning as Qatar dedicates itself to ‘green’ building.

marhaba.qa Developments to Infrastructure The State Budget for 2020 has again been based on an oil price of USD55 a barrel, and is forecast to achieve a QAR500 mn surplus. Revenue is again estimated at QAR211 bn, and spending at QAR210.5 bn. Expenditure is the highest in the past five fiscal years, as the country is committed to completing numerous development projects across multiple sectors, including those related to National Development Strategy 2018–2022.

The allocation for the healthcare sector is QAR22.6 bn, 11% of total expenditure in 2020, for major projects to improve healthcare services including expansion of Hamad Medical Corporation facilities and the establishment of new healthcare centres. The education sector is allocated QAR22.1 bn (10.5%), for expansion of schools and other educational facilities. The budget again provides for the five-year, QAR12.0 bn land development scheme for Qataris, to include water and electricity networks, sewerage, roads and other infrastructure.

The new public-private partnership (PPP) law, approved by the Cabinet in April 2019, is anticipated to be used to support projects connected to Qatar National Vision 2030 and the FIFA 2022 World Cup QatarTM. The PPPs will be used for a variety of sectors, including healthcare, education, sports, real estate and public infrastructure.

Public Works Authority ashghal.gov.qa The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) was established in 2004 for the planning, design, procurement, construction, delivery, and asset management of all infrastructure projects and public buildings in Qatar. Various departments oversee roads and highways, drainage networks, and public buildings such as hospitals and schools.

Key projects include the Expressway Programme, roads and drainage under the Local Areas Infrastructure Programme, and the Inner Doha Re-sewerage Implementation Strategy (IDRIS).

The 'Qualification of Small-Scale Contractors' initiative was launched in December 2018 to support Qatari companies and encourage them to participate in road projects, providing training and assistance with project implementation. The third phase was implemented in late 2019, and to date Ashghal has contributed to the development and support of local companies through 12 projects to improve roads.

Projects are also being implemented under the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places. This is for the development of several major roads, pedestrian and cycle paths, and landscaping, to include parks. More than 15,000 trees and shrubs have already been planted under the G Ring Road Development Project, and 30,000 on Al Khor Road.

Numerous expressway projects have brought great benefits to navigating around the country. The New Orbital Highway and Truck Route has been renamed as Al Majd Road: Road 2 links Mesaieed Industrial City with Lusail City, while Road 4 links Mall of Qatar with Ras Laffan. The superhighway Dukhan Road is nearing completion, while the B Ring Road development project is well underway.

The biggest expenditure, to infrastructure, is for development of highways and internal roads, expansion of the existing road system, water and electricity networks, sewerage networks, and other public utilities. The main infrastructure projects under construction include the relaunch of the previously-shelved Sharq Crossing Project, linking Ras Bu Abboud and West Bay, which is expected to be completed within four years.

Overall, Ashghal aims to complete 1,543 km of road works, 2,000 km of footpaths and 1,028 km of bicycle tracks between 2018 and 2022. Much of this is under the second phase of the National Strategy for Traffic Safety (2018–2022). Under the first phase (2013–2017), the road network tripled.

Under the Citizens Residences Development, 33 infrastructure projects are being implemented at a cost of QAR13.7 bn, to provide 30,000 residential plots in a number of areas: Al Wukair North, Al Mashaf, west of Abu Hamour/Ain Khaled, south of Al Shaihaniya, west of Umm Slal Ali, Rawdat Egdaim and Izghawa, west of Al Khor/Al Egda, west and south of Simaisma, Al Wukair South and Rawdat Al Jihaniya. In July 2020, Ashghal signed nine new contracts with Qatari companies, worth QAR3.6 bn, with work to commence in Q3 2020.

marhaba.qa The Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel projects began in May 2018 and will include a pumping station operating at 19.7 cu m per second, pumping water from Mesaimeer Tunnel to the new outfall tunnel. The project will provide a sustainable solution to discharge surface and storm water and cost around QAR920 mn. It is scheduled to be completed in Q4 2021 and is the second phase of the Mesaimeer Surface and Ground Water Drainage Tunnel Project. As at June 2020, 50% of excavation works on the 10 km long outfall tunnel has been completed.

and is part of the Tarsheed initiative to rationalise consumption of water and electricity.

In January 2020, Ministerial Resolution No 211 of 2019 on Setting the Fees for the Services Provided by the Public Works Authority was issued.

The services provided are under three categories: connecting to networks, usage of the networks, and providing permits for services related to the operation and maintenance of both drainage and roads networks. A full list of charges can be found on their website.

Selected Megaprojects in Qatar

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation km.com.qa The corporation, known as Kahramaa, was established in 2000 under the Ministry of Energy and Industry to regulate and maintain the supply of electricity and water to its customers. Kahramaa transferred ownership of its stations to Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) in 2002.

In November 2018 HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, assumed responsibility for Kahramaa as part of his remit to oversee the regular and sustainable supply of energy, power and water for domestic purposes.

An ambitious strategic plan for projects began in 2014. The first 'transformation' phase ended in 2018; the second phase started in 2019 and will end in 2023. Overall, Kahramaa plans to invest QAR38 bn in projects to meet the increasing demands made to the electricity and water supply, with a further QAR6 bn after 2022.

The commissioning of five mega water reservoirs to be online by 2026 will provide storage for 2,300 mn gallons a day of water. One, the Umm Al Houl Power Plant, currently pumps 136 mn gallons of water a day. The power generation phase will produce 2,520 megawatts of electricity. The plant will add around 30% water and 25% electricity of local demand once fully completed.

All Kahramaa meters will be smart by the end of 2020 with old ones being replaced. These meters digitally send readings to the energy supplier to ensure more accurate energy bills. They also help the customer better understand their energy usage QATAR INFRASTRUCTURE E-GUIDE ©

The use of about 1,000 smart digital devices to detect leakages in 10 places on the water distribution network has enabled savings of QAR6.42 mn, or 1.4 mn cubic feet of water. The first remotely-operated smart power substation opened at Barwa Village in September 2018. It is connected to the main control room enabling it to be monitored and shut down quickly in the case of an emergency without human intervention.

Qatar is undertaking a number of megaprojects to satisfy QNV 2030, as well as the much talked about football event. All this construction is good news for both local and international businesses.

These include projects with Qatar Rail, Qatar Free Zones Authority, the North Field Expansion project under Qatar Petroleum, and the proposed expansion of Hamad International Airport.

Construction projects both planned and underway include upgrades to infrastructure, as well as projects in all of the country's main sectors, from health to oil and gas and education. Here are just a few of the biggest projects currently underway:

The 2022 FIFA World Cup QatarTM qatar2022.qa No list would be complete without mentioning the enormity of the proposed sporting event coming to Qatar. With the ongoing scrutiny over the State being awarded the rights to host the competition, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) continues to issue assurances that the country's preparations are on track.

Previously known as the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, SC has signed stakeholder agreements with Qatar Rail, Ashghal, Kahramaa, Aspire Zone Federation and Qatari Diar, for projects to deliver the infrastructure for the event.

The Workers’ Welfare regularly interacts with SC workers and a dedicated hotline was established in 2017 to deal with grievances.

SC's Workers Welfare Standards exceed Qatar’s laws in an attempt to ensure fair recruitment policies, payment terms, overtime provisions and accommodation standards. All contracted workers are registered with an integrated electronic medical records system and undergo medical screening by Qatar Red Crescent funded by SC. The Official Emblem was unveiled in Doha on 2 September 2019 at 20:22 local time, with the synchronised projection of the emblem onto a number of prominent buildings.

The new stadiums have been designed by the world's leading architects and reflect a different aspect of Qatari culture, and take into consideration three priorities: access and comfort, sustainability, and post-tournament legacy. Fans can potentially see more than one match a day, as the longest distance between venues is just 55 km.

• Khalifa International Stadium: originally built in 1976, the stadium was reopened in May 2017 following its renovation.

• Education City Stadium: the 40,000-seat venue will host fixtures up to the quarter-finals, and in legacy mode the stadium will become a sports, leisure and social hub for students and local sports clubs. Half the seats will be donated to stadiums around the world. The stadium was officially completed on 15 June 2020.

• Al Bayt Stadium: a 60,000 seater-stadium which will be home to Al Khor Sports Club. The design of the proposed host venue up to the semi-final matches is based on a Bedouin tent, and will have a retractable roof. After the tournament the stadium's modular seating will reduce to 32,000 with the surplus seats donated to global football development projects.

• Al Rayyan Stadium: features an undulating façade and sand dune-shaped structures, using environmentally friendly building materials and practices, with a renewable energy generation system on site. The proposed venue up to the quarter-finals will be the new home of Qatar Stars League football team Al Rayyan Club, and nearly half of the 40,000 modular seats will be donated overseas.

• Al Thumama Stadium: capacity for 40,000 fans and will host matches up to the quarter-finals.

The stadium, designed by Qatari architect Ibrahim M Jaidah, represents the traditional gahfiya, and won the MIPIM/The Architectural Review Future Project Award in May 2018. In legacy mode, seating will be reduced to 20,000.

• Ras Abu Aboud Stadium: constructed from shipping containers, removable seats and other

• Lusail Stadium: seating 80,000, the stadium in Lusail City will host the opening and closing ceremonies, matches throughout the tournament, and the final, to be held on Qatar National Day, 18 December. Its design is inspired by the fanar lantern, as well as the motifs on bowls and other vessels seen throughout history in the Arab world. After the tournament, the stadium will be changed into a community space with schools, shops, cafés, sporting facilities and clinics.

The company is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the entire network and systems.

The state-of-the-art railway network currently consists of Doha Metro, a rapid transit system connecting communities within Doha and its suburbs, and Lusail Tram, a service for convenient travel within the new city of Lusail.

• The Red Line is about 40 km running from Al Wakra in the south to Lusail in the north, with a connection to Hamad International Airport. There are 18 stations, and passengers can transfer to the Lusail Tram at Legtaifiya and Lusail stations.

• The Green Line runs east from Al Riffa to Al Mansoura, in the west.

• The Gold Line runs from Ras Bu Abboud to Al Aziziya with 11 stations.

Lusail Tram: An integrated transportation system to serve Lusail City. The state-of-the art network is a tram based system that will connect all the major points of interest in the city. Infrastructure in Qatar

One of the largest projects in Qatar, costing an estimated QAR163.8 bn (USD45 bn), Lusail City is developed by Lusail Real Estate Development Company (LREDC), a subsidiary of the Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company, itself a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority.

Spanning 38 sq km north of Doha, Lusail City is master planned to accommodate more than 450,000 residents and visitors. The project was launched in 2004.

Features of Lusail City include: • Energy City: Will be the country’s centre for government ministries, and public and private company headquarters.

• Fox Hills district: Covers 1.6 mn sq m with housing for 40,000 residents, a 200‑bed hospital, 36 schools and 35 mosques.

• Place Vendôme: Inspired by Paris' Rue de la Paix and is a mixed-use project with a mall and luxury retail wing, two five-star hotels (Le Royal Meridien and Palais Vendôme), a luxury collection hotel (Le Royal Meridien Residences), a cinema and other entertainment areas.

• Qetaifan Island North: A mixed-use project with a beach club, a linear park and a floating hotel.

Qetaifan Projects is owned by Katara Hospitality.

With residents now moving to the city, work continues on services such as petrol stations, health centres and schools, as well as developing roads, malls and other facilities. Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company and Kahramaa started

operation of the main power transmission and power distribution stations in May 2019, which has 14 main power transmission stations and 135 power distribution stations.

Msheireb Downtown Doha msheireb.com Msheireb Properties is a real estate development company and a subsidiary of Qatar Foundation.

Their flagship project, Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD), is the world’s first sustainable downtown regeneration project, the QAR20 bn restoration of a 31 hectare site. Msheireb means ‘a place to drink water’ in Arabic, and is the historical name of downtown Doha. The entire development is aiming for Gold or Platinum Certification for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED).

MDD is divided into five broad quarters: • Diwan Amiri Quarter: Adjacent to the Amiri Diwan and Al Koot Fort, the Quarter is a group of three stone-clad public buildings comprising the Diwan Annexe, the administrative headquarters building for the Amiri Diwan, the Amiri Guard Building and the Qatar National Archive.

• Heritage Quarter: Includes the heritage houses which form Msheireb Museums – Bin Jelmood House, Company House, Mohammed Bin Jassim House and Radwani House.

• Retail Quarter: The largest of all five quarters, with the Galleria Mall. Sikkat Wadi Msheireb is a pedestrian-only street with cafés, small boutiques and the Park Hyatt Hotel. In August 2019 the first residences were released at the Wadi 1 building, featuring the latest smart home technologies. Barahat Msheireb is the largest covered public square in the region and houses the Mandarin Oriental Doha hotel, cinemas, exhibition halls, galleries, and Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery Hotel Collection.

• Business Gateway: Premium business amenities will be on offer in the low- and mid-rise buildings.

A number of hotel options are available for convenient meeting and conference use.

Cars and other methods of transportation will be underground in several basement levels for a pedestrian‑friendly atmosphere. The project is served by a dedicated tramway and is the central interchange for the Doha Metro lines.

Much of the project is now open to the public.

Commercial contracts have been signed with government entities, Qatar Financial Centre, Novo cinemas and Al Meera supermarket chain. m

Record Breaking Water Security

By Sarah Palmer Qatar may be a small nation, but it has big ideas and award-winning infrastructure!

Q

atar General Electricity and Water Corporation, more familiarly known as Kahramaa, has been entered into the Guinness World Records for the Largest Drinking Water Storage Tank in the World – another new world record for Qatar!

According to the ratified certificate bestowed upon Kahramaa by the Guinness World Records, the volume of the water tank, the largest of its kind in the world, is more than 436,000 cubic metres – 96 mn imperial gallons or 115 mn US gallons – and which qualifies Kahramaa for the new world record.

This world-record holding drinking water storage tank is part of Kahramaa's major water tanks project, and reflects the efficiency of Kahramaa's strategy to enhance water security in Qatar. It is also in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, which has as one of its goals achieving water security in a number of regions around the country. It supports Kahramaa's goals in assisting and boosting the country's comprehensive development process, and is also part of Kahramaa's commitment to meeting the country's water needs, providing sustainable and high-quality services in accordance with international and local standards.

Kahramaa launched the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project in December 2018, 18 months after the blockade was imposed on Qatar. The project is in line with the vision of The Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani who has tasked the utility company with achieving water security for the state, which has witnessed an increasing population and a slew of development projects over the last few years. It also alleviates the need for relying on other, external means of achieving water security.

It has been touted as the largest water storage development ever constructed in the country, with a total capacity of about 1,500 mn gallons and which

could guarantee water stock needs until 2026. The project includes 15 reservoirs, thought to be the largest in the world, with a capacity of about 100 mn gallons per reservoir, in five strategic locations: Umm Birka, Umm Slal, Rawdat Rashid, Abu Nakhlah and Al Thumama. Kahramaa plans to expand the project in the future, bringing the number of tanks to 40 with a capacity of nearly 4,000 mn gallons, to meet Qatar's water requirements until 2036.

The award is yet another successful milestone by the national utility company and reflects the importance given to the project, as it forms the backbone of water security in the State of Qatar. The world record achievement adds to Kahramaa's already impressive year, having won two awards at the Global Good Governance (3G) Awards in London for the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed). Meanwhile the inauguration of the Umm Al Houl power plant has increased the water production capacity in Qatar by about 40%.

Kahramaa has worked on maintaining water quality, with the drinking water quality exceeding standards set out by the World Health Organization. The Water Quality Laboratory successfully renewed its ISO 17025: 2005 certification from the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation, one of the first laboratories to obtain this accreditation in the region. m ©

The Architectural Marvels of Qatar

atar is home to some of the most beautiful architectural marvels in the region and the world with museums, offices, stadiums and more, designed by some of the world’s most renowned architects such as I M Pei, Jean Nouvel, Zaha Hadid and more.

Prior to the country’s recent development and preparatons for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, there were a few noticeable buildings such as the 40-year-old pyramid-like Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, and nearly no skyscrapers. Today, the Doha skyline is one of the most stunning skylines in the world, lined with futuristic skyscrapers and incredible structures.

As you tour around the country, make sure to take in the stunning architectural buildings.

Burj Doha (Doha Tower) Located on the Doha Corniche, Burj Doha or Doha Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks of Doha, prominently yet subtly adding to the Doha cityscape.

It’s one of the highest buldings in the country at about 238.1 m (781 ft) with 46 floors above ground. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the tower was commissioned by Sheikh Saud bin Mohammed Al Thani specifically to address the need for an outstanding example of contemporary architecture for Doha, that also reflected Qatar’s Islamic heritage.

Overlooking the Gulf, the award-winning tower provides floors of offices, a restaurant with panoramic views, and a private residence at the penthouse level.

The tower is topped by a full-span dome and a spire, and clad entirely in an intricately patterned stainless steel screen.

The cladding system is a reference to the traditional Islamic mashrabiya, or artistic screen, used for shading or room dividing. The design for the system involved using a single geometric motif at several scales, overlaid at different densities along the façade. The overlays occur in response to the solar conditions: 25% opacity was placed on the north elevation, 40% on the south, and 60% on the east and west. From afar, the screen appears as a uniform density, but the intricacy of the layering and scaling of the screens becomes apparent at a closer viewpoint, lending the building multiple textural experiences.

The overall façade system is estimated to reduce cooling loads by 20%. At night, an integrated lighting system enhances the delicate screen with programmable light shows.

The base of the tower has a 25-m-wide pergola to provide a shaded entry, as well as a lushly planted garden. Landscaping covers 40% of the site, adding to the pedestrian experience. Below, three levels of parking accommodate a total of 870 cars solely for the office tenants.

A large interior atrium houses eight glass lifts; the atrium reaches a height of 112 m, up to level 27, which offers a transfer lobby between low- and high-zones. The transparent lifts offer views of the surrounding city. The structure of the tower is a non-traditional concrete diagrid with canted columns forming an X-shaped framing system. This system creates a unique effect in the office spaces in conjunction with the façade screen. In contrast to more typical office towers, the spatial quality of the interior is one of ever-changing patterns of light and texture, breaking the standard of monotony.

A grand private residence is located within the dome of the tower at 182 m above ground level.

The luxury residence has its own private entrance into the building and elevator service, along with private access to the restaurant below. The breathtaking effect of the culmination of the dome structure and screen creates a truly singular space.

Included in the residence are a sauna and pool along with typical residential amenities and 360 degree views of the surrounding city.

Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I M Pei, MIA became an architectural icon and feature of the Doha skyline when it first opened in 2008.

Standing alone on reclaimed land on the Doha Corniche, the building draws much influence from

ancient Islamic architecture, notably the Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo.

The building is made from limestone, which captures hourly changes in light and shade. The geometric patterns of the Islamic world adorn the inside space, making for a grand interior.

The centrepiece of the atrium is a curved double staircase leading up to the first floor. Above it floats an ornate circular metal chandelier echoing the curve of the staircase. An oculus, at the top of the atrium, captures and reflects patterned light within the faceted dome. The five-storey 45-metre tall window on the north side gives spectacular panoramic views across the bay.

A variety of textures and materials, including wood and stone, have created a unique environment for the museum’s stunning collections. With incredible views across the bay, it’s the foundation for Doha’s burgeoning cultural scene.

MIA comprises a main building with an adjacent education wing connected by a large central courtyard. The main building rises five-storeys, topped by a high domed atrium within a central tower.

MIA is also home to Alain Ducasse’s first restaurant in the Middle East. 'Idam' means 'generosity', and each dish is a celebration of local tastes, spices and ingredients. Philippe Starck’s unique décor creates a sophisticated atmosphere, overlooking Doha’s skyline from the top floor of the museum.

National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) (pictured above)

Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the National Museum of Qatar officially opened in March 2019, making a dramatic addition to the Doha landscape, with its curved discs, intersections, and cantilevered angles — all inspired by the complex form of the local desert rose, found in Qatar’s arid desert regions.

Designed to be both immersive and experiential, visitors can expect to encounter a rich environment to explore. Organised in three 'chapters' — Beginnings, Life in Qatar, and The Modern History of Qatar — each theme is presented across 11 highly individual galleries. The story of Qatar unfolds across the galleries, all employing innovative approaches to storytelling. Each gallery provides a unique perspective across time and connects visitors to lives lived between land and sea. All the senses are triggered through a creative combination of sounds including music and oral histories, visually through film and archival images.

Built on the grounds of the original Qatar National Museum, this unique building embraces the

newly restored Old Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani — his family home and seat of the government for 25 years — which itself represents the heart of Qatari national identity. This nationally significant building has been carefully restored and conserved, so that it can be enjoyed by visitors and future generations to come.

Spread over 1.5 km, the museum features a 220-seat auditorium, and a rolling programme of events ensures each visit offers a new perspective.

For students and researchers, the dedicated research centre and laboratories provide new study opportunities. There are also venues to eat, including a stunning rooftop restaurant, and a newly landscaped park that offers familyfriendly interactive learning environments and also celebrates Qatar’s indigenous plants.

Qatar National Library (QNL) (pictured below) Designed by Rem Koolhaas, the Qatar National Library (QNL) features tiers of marble bookcases set within a single open-plan space.

The OMA-designed building, which opened in Education City in 2017, houses several collections of Qatar's most important texts and manuscripts on Arab-Islamic civilisation.

a diamond-shaped exterior profile and an internal space organised around three aisles of books enclosing a central triangular space.

Inside, display shelves stretch out across terraces in every corner of the 138-m-long library, and platforms jut out over the archives sunk into the centre of the structure.

A column-free bridge connects each of the main aisles and doubles as a platform for study spaces, reading rooms, exhibition areas and a multipurpose auditorium that can be defined by a retractable screen.

The shelves are central to the design and function of the library. Each one is made from the same white marble as the floors and infrastructure, and incorporate the lighting, ventilation and even the book return system.

Sunk 6 m deep into the centre of the space are the bookshelves housing the heritage collection, with shelves clad in beige travertine to give the space an 'excavated' feel. Directly accessible from the outside, this section can function independently of the main library.

A façade of corrugated glass and a reflective aluminium ceiling are designed to filter and diffuse the bright sunlight to create the optimum light level for reading. Outside, a sunken patio allows light to filter to the basement levels.

Located in Al Wakra, the stadium is designed by the late iconic Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, who passed away in 2016, meaning that Al Janoub Stadium was one of her final projects. It was inaugurated on 16 May 2019 during the Amir Cup 2019 final with a match between Al Duhail and Al Sadd. It’s the second tournament-ready venue for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

The capacity of the stadium is 40,000, which is expected to reduce in half to 20,000 after the World Cup – the seats will be donated to football development projects overseas.

Its design was inspired by the hulls of the traditional dhow pearl fishing boats, further reflected by the use of timber and traditional materials. The symmetrical roof composed of three shells is the standout feature.

As football fans approach the stadium, they will be greeted by beautiful parkland and the arena's elegant architecture. A school; wedding hall; cycling, horse riding and running tracks; restaurants; marketplaces; gyms; and parkland are some of the amenities that will enhance Al Janoub Stadium.

Zaha Hadid Architects is developing various projects in Qatar especially in the country’s futuristic smart city, Lusail City, designing hotels, office and residential buildings, and more.

Other architectural marvels:

Overall the building encompasses 42,000 sq m of space for books and readers, housing Qatar's National Library, the Public Library, the University Library, and the Heritage Collection. The public library houses over a million books and space for thousands of readers.

Doha boasts two of the most modern and well-quipped venues in the world of Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE). Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) has the largest open space hall available in Qatar. The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) is an iconic and impressive building proudly rooted in Qatar’s culture. The main conference hall holds up to 4,000 delegates & the Al Mayassa Theater is a glorious venue for 2300 guests.

Whether you are active and athletic or just a spectator, Qatar is constructing an amazing array of eight new stadiums to showcase the FIFA World Cup 2022TM. They beautifully reflect Qatari culture as well as cater for the demands of modern sports tournaments. All, except for Al Bayt and Al Thumama stadiums, are accessible using the Doha Metro network.

iCARE iCARE is the sole focal point for our investors that has been designed with one thing in mind - to get businesses operational as quickly as possible.

Essentially, we deal with everything a business needs after they’ve been licensed, from visas to utilities, to getting them up and running.

Once your business is licensed, iCARE takes over the relationship between QFZA and investors and becomes their single point of contact for anything they may need.

This handover stage is called “The Handshake”. From here, it is our job at iCARE to take care of everything your business needs to commence operations: From the issuance of visas, driving licenses, Qatari IDs, to getting your business bank accounts set-up.

Our long-term duty of care towards our investors is divided into two areas. The first is focused on everything needed from QFZA; whether relocation, expansion or permitting services. The second area deals with everything that takes place beyond our Zones; from visa renewals to changes in commercial activities. Essentially, anything to do with diversifying our investors’ business to help them grow.

The Airport Free Zone Ras Bufontas Free Zone covers 4 square kilometres, and sits directly adjacent to the award-winning Hamad International Airport (HIA), home to Qatar Airways, one of the world’s premier air cargo handlers. The first line of the Doha Metro, which opened in May 2019, provides direct access to the zone.
