From the President’s Pen I hope that you are excited about Albuquerque 2026. I know that I am (in case you didn’t already know that). The work of finding a city started in 2023 and I went on the first site visit in February of 2024. I truly had no idea what went into planning a conference like this. I had worked on conferences for MCDA and MMEA, but those conferences are always in the same location, with leaders from within the state. This was truly a whole difference animal. Planning this conference has been a journey, but one that I have enjoyed and am thankful that I had the opportunity to be involved with.

Working with Margie Camp, my conference chair, has been a joy!! The institutional knowledge that Margie has, both for SWACDA and ACDA is unmatched and I am grateful that she said “yes” when I asked her to be part of the team.

Speaking of great teams, you will soon be receiving the January Choral Journal (hard copies mailed in January, but is already online). It is really a beautiful issue with a HUGE amount of information about all of the regional conferences. A BIG shout out to the editorial team of Amanda Bumgarner, Ron Granger and Robyn Hilger for all of their work in producing this issue!!!!

The Times They Are A-Changin’ Bob Dylan; arr. Adam Podd Hal Leonard Corporation SATB, accompanied Podd creates a new perspective on Bob Dylan’s classic hit from the 1960’s. The innovative harmonic progressions found throughout the piece highlight the text in a way that transforms the song from a rock folk ballad to a contemporary choral masterpiece. It is also a great opportunity to teach your ensemble how to read alternating compound time signatures. Zanaida Robles Gentry Publications SATB divisi, a cappella Robles does an incredible job at developing the traditional hymn tune into a tapestry of harmonic development and dynamic contrast. Made for an advanced ensemble, this piece utilizes elements from jazz with subtle hints of gospel music to create a powerful version of this soul-stirring melody. State of the State Texas Leigh Ann McClure President TCDA

TCDA: Reflection and Anticipation As we near the end of the year, many of our outstanding Texas choirs are preparing to present concerts in Albuquerque in March. We are so thrilled to bring so many of our outstanding young musicians to perform what will undoubtedly be moving performances. In the meantime, our TCDA board members have been busy hosting activities and preparing for others.

In October we hosted our first annual New and Emerging Professionals Workshop, an opportunity for our younger members to engage with one another, attend sessions led by some outstanding directors in the middle of their professional careers, earn professional development credit that directly relates to their teaching area, and hear from area fine arts directors who shared information about interview skills. The response from those who attended–both those who presented and those there to learn–was affirming and positive. We are excited to continue offering this unique platform for our younger members again next fall.

In addition, Dr. Eric Posada hosted our first New and Emerging Professionals Virtual Meet Up in November. Those attending had the chance to hear from two outstanding Texas choral directors from different parts of our state. Sisters Cynthia Douglas from the Houston area and Pauline Sexton from the Dallas-Fort Worth area shared openly about their early careers and answered questions from eager college students as well as young professionals already in the classroom. We are all excited about attending another after the first of the year.

Finally, our board has already selected more opportunities for professional growth than ever during our 71st annual convention July 15-18, with a Friday only intensive for our elementary choral directors. Dr. Derrick Fox will be TCDA’s summer headliner in San Antonio and our honor choir directors will be Gemma Arguelles (Elementary Honor Choir) and Robert T. Griffin (Middle SchoolJunior High All-State Choir).

On a personal note, I am excited to meet and get reacquainted with many of you in Albuquerque. What a wonderful series of sessions and concerts we have to look forward to thanks to Jonathan and his outstanding team. As for me, I can’t wait!

Michael Shimp, Chair Show Choir Pt. 2 of 4

In Part 1 of this series, we looked at what happens on the surface of a contest day with Carmen Forte, from the six supported scoring models to plain language tie breaks, to how critiques travel from a judge’s phone to a director’s inbox in about a minute, even when the Wi Fi gets grumpy. We saw that the platform was never just “paper, but digital,” it was built around speed, accuracy, and transparency so students and parents can finally understand why results turned out the way they did, and directors can focus on teaching instead of defending math.

In this second installment, we sit back down with founder Sherman Charles to tackle the questions directors usually save for the car ride home. Who really owns the scores and audio, how long do they live in the system, and how does Carmen Forte keep student data safe while still giving you useful exports for your own records. What do you get built in, from payments to public results pages, and what is on the roadmap for next season. Along the way, Sherman walks us through onboarding, live support on show day, real world proof that the system works at scale, and how an educator advisory board helps decide what gets built next. If Part 1 showed that scoring can be clear, Part 2 is about trust, ownership, and long term impact, and how a scoring platform can double as a teaching tool once the trophies are packed away.

6. What is your data policy, including ownership of scores and media, retention timelines, security practices, and any compliance considerations relevant to schools?

Ownership You own your data. Hosts keep full ownership of scores, recordings, comments, and media. Carmen Forte provides the platform, not the claim.

Security, the essentials ● Encryption: AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit. ● Access control: Fine-grained, row-level rules. Judges only see the events they are assigned to. ● Audio protection: Download links are temporary and authenticated, with a 7-day expiration. Directors can save files locally, then the links expire. ● Audit trails: Every access and change is logged for accountability.

Privacy and school compliance We align with FERPA, COPPA, GDPR, and CPPA. Sensitive items like director contact info, payment details, and any student records live in isolated database areas with strict permissions.

What we do not do ● No third-party data sharing for ads or analytics. ● No social media style features that would require monitoring student behavior. ● No training of AI models on your audio. Transcription uses providers with zero-retention agreements. ● No ads that harvest personal information. ● No scraping other sites and calling it our data.

Retention and control Hosts set the timeline. You decide how long to keep or archive materials, and you can request deletion. Your data is yours, PERIOD. 7. Which integrations exist or are planned, for example registration systems, payment tools, public results pages, learning platforms, cloud storage, and open data exports?

Here is the short version: you get payments, public results pages, a public resource library, and cloud storage. All are built and managed inside Carmen Forte. One login, one support team, one security policy, no data passed around to a bunch of vendors.

Why we build it ourselves We handle sensitive information, like director contacts, payment details, and sometimes student records.

We also work with schools that follow FERPA, COPPA, GDPR, and CPPA. To keep privacy airtight, each person only sees what is relevant to their event. We cannot guarantee that standard if we bolt on third party tools with unclear data policies, so we keep the core in house.

Registration system This is in active development. Our educator advisory board sets the priorities, not a feature checklist. We build what directors actually use.
