Virginia Tech Faculty Library: The structure is centered around the grand reading room, a dome clad in copper containing three levels. The below ground floor is where the stacks sit and connects the reading room to the two other parts of the building underground. The ground level floor forms a mezzanine with personal reading niches that cut into the dome’s eight foot thick walls. The third floor level is a mezzanine underneath the oculus for reading. Daylighting methods direct the design by means of the building’s orientation, windows, and sawtooth clerestories inserted into the oculus and spanning the length of the library’s copper roofs.

The Room and the Garden: Travel through the painting exhibits is affected by the form of the rooms. Larger galleries with room for seating invite leisurely viewing of the paintings, while narrow hallways displaying artwork compel one to hurry through them, establishing a hierachy of the exhibits. Connection with the garden outside is created by the shallow pool traveling through the building and site.

Treehouse: This small wooden shelter sits on the existing willow tree’s three main branches and reaches the ground by a ladder. Its glass covering shields the inhabitant from the elements, providing the protection that the dense canopy cannot. The treehouse echoes the structure and poetry of the tree.
