T

he maritime history of Maharashtra, a western state of India, dates back centuries and is known for its rich heritage in maritime trade and seafaring activities. The state’s strategic coastal location on the Arabian Sea has made it a significant maritime hub over the years.

Maharashtra’s maritime history can be traced back to ancient times when various maritime kingdoms and dynasties thrived along its coast. The Satavahanas, the Rashtrakutas, and the Chalukyas were prominent among them.

These rulers utilized the sea routes for trade connections with other coastal regions, which played a crucial role in their economic growth.

During the medieval period, Maharashtra witnessed the rise of the Maratha Empire under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The Marathas established a powerful naval force known as the Maratha Navy. Their naval expeditions and control over crucial ports helped them in protecting their territory and expanding their influence along the Western Ghats.

Furthermore, the Portuguese, British, and other European powers also played a significant role in shaping Maharashtra’s maritime history.

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & TECHNOLOGY

A FORMIDABLE FORCE Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha warrior king, had a formidable naval force that played a crucial role in his reign. His naval expeditions were focused on securing the Konkan and western coastline of India from the Portuguese, English, and other European powers.

Under Shivaji’s leadership, the Marathas built a powerful fleet consisting of warships called “Shivdurg” and swift warboats known as “gurabs.” These vessels, equipped with cannons, provided a formidable defense and allowed Shivaji to launch offensive operations.

One of Shivaji’s most notable naval expeditions was the capture of the strategic fortress of Suvarnadurg from the Siddis, a powerful naval force of African origin. This victory expanded Shivaji’s control over the lucrative trade routes and strengthened his presence along the Konkan coast.

Shivaji’s naval force engaged in numerous skirmishes and battles with European powers along the coastline. His navy inflicted heavy losses on the Portuguese fleet and successfully intercepted and captured several enemy vessels.

The highlight of Shivaji’s naval prowess was the audacious raid on the English-controlled fortress of Bombay (present-day Mumbai) in 1664. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Shivaji’s navy managed to surprise the English and temporarily gain control of the island before eventually being forced to retreat.

Shivaji’s fleet, during the 17th century, was known for its innovative naval architecture and technology. The Maratha king recognized the importance of a strong naval force and invested in the development of his fleet.

The naval architecture of Shivaji’s ships was primarily influenced by the traditional Indian design known as the “dhow.” Dhows were sturdy, versatile vessels with a triangular or trapezoidal lateen sail. Shivaji’s naval architects incorporated this design with modifications to suit their needs. They focused on building ships that could maneuver swiftly in shallow coastal waters and withstand the Arabian Sea’s rough conditions.

In terms of technology, Shivaji’s fleet utilized various advancements for naval warfare. They employed cannons, which were modern for that era, to engage enemy vessels. Additionally, they developed an innovative tactical approach called the “gut technique.” This strategy involved lashing enemy ships together, boarding them, and engaging in close combat.

Shivaji’s fleet also utilized mines and fireships, which were vessels loaded with explosives to destroy enemy ships.

To improve communication and coordination, Shivaji’s fleet used signal flags and other visual cues. They also maintained a strong network of naval bases and coastal forts, strategically positioned for defense and controlling maritime trade routes.

Overall, Shivaji’s fleet combined indigenous naval architecture with innovative technology, making them a daunting force in the region.

Their naval prowess played a significant role in establishing Maratha naval dominance along the western coast of India during that period.

Steerprop to supply advanced Arctic Bow Thrusters for Canada’s New Polar Icebreaker

S

teerprop, a leading designer and manufacturer of high-performance propulsion systems, has been chosen to supply advanced ice-classed bow thrusters to the Canadian Coast Guard’s new Polar Icebreaker. The ship will be designed and built

by Seaspan Shipyards as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy.

When completed, she will be one of the most powerful icebreakers in the world.

Steerprop will equip the Polar Icebreaker with two arctic tunnel thrusters specially designed to meet the most demanding ice conditions, even without the protection of tunnel grids. This will be Steerprop’s first delivery of this unique ice-strengthened tunnel thruster, which will take the performance and reliability of tunnel thrusters to the next level. The delivery scope also includes a bridge control system and an offline oil filtering system.

Steerprop has designed an optimal solution for the scope and operational profile of the icebreaker based on the company’s decadeslong experience of delivering ice-classed solutions, and “fit for purpose” resolve. In addition to optimizing operational performance, the fully integrated propulsion solution will increase reliability and safety, while reducing lifecycle costs and keeping maintenance requirements at a minimum.

The multi-mission Polar Icebreaker has a displacement of 27,876 tonnes. It will be 150 meters long, 28 meters wide, and will accommodate up to 100 people. With an ice class Polar Class 2 (PC2) rating, the second highest ice class according to the IACS, it will be able to operate in more difficult ice conditions

A Smartship Indeed!

S

hips have to get smarter in order to be more efficient, less polluting and safer to run. State-of-the-art technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), Internet of things (IOT), Hybrid Electric Propulsion, and ultimately autonomous or unmanned ships, are all progressing towards the ultimate goal of decarbonization.

Zetnor International, was invited as a speaker to the event and a representative of the Indian Maritime Industry. Capt. Wagh made a presentation which described the Indian Maritime Industry and the possibilities of cooperation between the maritime industries of South Korea and India. The Chief Guest at the event was the Deputy Mayor of Ulsan city.

‘Ulsan Taehwa’ is one such ship which is built

by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the purpose of being a technology demonstration vessel, and a platform for testing new equipment, as well as for training. She has dual fuel propulsion of LNG and MDO, as well as electric propulsion. She can thus be operated in pure electric mode, pure diesel or LNG mode, or hybrid electric mode. During sea trials, the vessel reduced carbon emissions by 40 percent as compared to conventional diesel propelled vessels.

The event was hosted by the top management of HHI, Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency (UIPA) and KOMERI which is the largest Maritime research organisation in the world. The exclusive gathering also consisted of high-level vendors of HHI who have high technology products in their portfolio. After the presentations, there was a tour of the ship including the engine room to view the advanced propulsion and control system, with the testing facility and monitoring controls. The excellent occasion concluded with a networking session and a cruise aboard the lovely ship.

There was a technology demonstration recently held onboard the Ulsan Taehwa at Ulsan.

The vessel has a length of 89.1 m, breadth 12.8 m, Max draft 3.3 m, and a top speed of 16 knots. She has a capacity of 300 passengers and will be operated as a demonstration vessel

In addition to the hybrid power plant, the vessel also employs a variety of other smart technologies. The technology allows the power generation to be adjusted in 1/1000 of a second, which according to HHI is about 100 times faster than existing engines. Among the other smart ship functions is a maintenance operation that selfdiagnoses the operating equipment.

India has great ambitions for her port development, shipyards and shipping industries. There are many opportunities for collaboration between India and South Korea in terms of technology transfers, investments, joint ventures and port/ offshore constructions. Also, our ships need to upgrade technologies in order to comply with the latest EEXI and CII regulations. It is time for us to seize the opportunity and take a quantum leap in this vital infrastructure industry.

Capt Rajesh Tandon, FNI, Chief Executive Officer - FOSMA, Maritime Consultant, Ex-Global Director at ‘V Group’, Ex-Chairman IMEC, Capt Sartaj Gill, Global Director, Competence and Development at ‘V Group,’ and Mr Joao Almeida, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sonangol Marine Services, USA, received this prestigious Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Chancellor Dr J Ramachandran.

into a “Global Maritime Knowledge Hub”. Further he had congratulated the recipients of Honorary Doctorates and cherished the happiness that two of them are AMET Alumni who are now occupying prominent positions in the shipping industry. Col. Dr G Thiruvasagam, Pro-Chancellor (Academics) presented the Doctor of Science Hororis Causa citation to the honorary Doctorate Awardees.

Capt Amitabh Sankranti, a Master Mariner and MBA with over 28 years of experience in the sector, created Ingenium Marine in 2018 with the goal of developing new solutions to meet the demands of the marine industry.

Before taking the plunge into Entrepreneurship My seafaring career began in 1990 when I joined T.S. Rajendra. From cadet to master mariner, my experience was rich, and I had wonderful mentors in both persons and companies.

Having sailed aboard a variety of vessels with Wilhelmsen Group and Shell Tankers, including Bulk Carriers, Product Tankers, LPG and LNG Ships.

My never-ending thirst for knowledge led me to pursue an MBA at the famed Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. I learned about current operations and all I didn’t know about finance.

Before venturing into entrepreneurship, I worked as a Projects and Investments Manager, Fleet Director in Bernhard Schulte Ship Management India, and Quality Assurance Director for Scorpio Tankers.

Uncharted territory After working in a variety of roles, it was time to make a difference in the industry by doing something new. Transforming businesses has always piqued my interest, and this was my chance to be innovative and transform the way ships operate.

So, in 2018, I created Ingenium Marine with the goal of digitising ship logbooks and providing significant data analytics to the sector. Shipping needed a suitable product for Electronic Record Books, and MARPOL rules were being amended to allow

CMC bids adieu to ETO-39 and GME-44 Batches

oimbatore Marine College (CMC) witnessed a momentous event on November 24, when it bid farewell to the talented graduates of the ETO-39 and GME-44 batches with 55 cadets.

The leave-taking event, which was attended by the distinguished Chief Guest, Mr Shyam Jagannathan IAS, Director General of Shipping, was a great celebration of academic accomplishments and nautical prowess. The dignitaries lit the ceremonial lamp, symbolising the dispelling of darkness and the quest of knowledge, which was followed by the welcoming address delivered by C/E. S. I. Nathan, Chairman of CMC Group.

A movie was also shown to provide information on the Gangway Mobile App. C/E Balakrishnan Kumar, Head of GME, and Mr. Karthick, Head of ETO, offered thorough insights into the courses. Cadets Deepak Yadav and Abhishek Pandey offered lengthy testimonials about their academics and self-development experiences at CMC. The certificate was individually presented to the institution’s graduates in recognition of their hard work.

Mr Jagannathan, IAS, presented his expertise and urged the graduates to pursue new opportunities. He went on to say that the cadets should demonstrate that they are exceptional leaders by venturing into uncharted territory.

He emphasised India’s accomplishments in the maritime industry over the last decade, as well as Vision 2030. The transformative strategies used in the area, such as Green Commitment, were also presented in order to attract students to pursue professions with Indian Vessels. Women mariners’ contributions to the field of shipping and seafarers’ wellbeing were highlighted. He went on to explain the responsibilities of future seafarers by focusing on the vision and the methods for accomplishing it.

Improving propulsion efficiency

T

echnology group Wärtsilä will supply its EnergoFlow and EnergoProFin solutions for ten Bird Class oil and chemical tankers owned by Hafnia – the Singapore head-quartered global tanker operator. The combination of the two Wärtsilä systems ensures an optimised waterflow over and after the propeller, thereby improving propulsion efficiency considerably.

The order was booked by Wärtsilä in October 2023.

EnergoFlow is an innovative pre-swirl stator that creates an optimal inflow for the propeller, reducing fuel consumption and emissions in all operating conditions. The EnergoProFin is an energy saving propeller cap with fins that rotate together with the propeller. It reduces the energy losses created by the propeller hub vortex, increasing overall propulsion efficiency and significantly reducing underwater noise.

By improving the vessels’ fuel efficiency, emissions are reduced, operating costs are lowered, and both the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) value are improved.

The EnergoProFin propeller cap and EnergoFlow pre-swirl stator work together to deliver meaningful fuel savings and better environmental performance, which are key ambitions for today’s leading operators,” commented Francois Emin, Product Manager – Propulsion, Wärtsilä.

The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled to be delivered commencing in 2024. The project will be carried out over a two-year period for the 10 vessels.

TMS Tanker conference aims to protect future generations and Mother Nature -Jagdamba Pandey

C

limate change pressures and the drive to decarbonise the shipping industry dominated the proceedings of The Maritime Standard Tanker Conference 2023, which took place on November 8th at The Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai. There was broad agreement amongst speakers that this is the single most pressing issue facing tankers owners and operators, as well as other stakeholders, although in many respects the optimum pathway to achieve the goals necessary to protect the global environment is far from certain, with a number of alternative fuels and technology solutions challenging for future primacy. What was clear however was a collective will to succeed and protect future generations, and ‘Mother Nature’, from the environmental harms being caused by shipping which, as one speaker pointed out, would be the 8th biggest generator of carbon emissions in the world today if it were a country.

The 2023 TMS Tanker Conference, which featured a programme of expert presentations, lively panel discussions, and a series of interesting questions from the floor, was structured around the theme “Net Zero -Tanker Shipping Setting the Global Decarbonisation Agenda.” The event set out to highlight the ways in which this sector of the industry and its various components are in the vanguard of change.

Opening the conference, TMS Editor, Clive Woodbridge, said, “The primary focus of the conference this year is the drive to meet tough new climate change targets, and recently implemented environmental regulations, and this will be a ‘golden thread’ running through all our discussions. Not so long ago EEXI and CII were just letters in the alphabet; now they are firmly established parts of the shipping industry vocabulary. Tanker shipping is in many respects leading the way in embracing new ideas and concepts in response to the strategic imperative of tackling climate change, as well as the new regulatory context, and this conference will shine a light on that reality.”

The opening session, on “Setting Green Shipping Strategy - Policy Choices for the Tanker Sector” was preceded by a keynote speech from Capt. Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC Logistics and Services, who stressed the need for a proactive approach to climate change. Nobody was exempt from tackling climate change and sustainability had to be integrated into all

elements of the tanker shipping business, with broad stakeholder involvement, he pointed out. Other speakers in this key session, which laid the foundations for the day-long discussions, included Dr Ibrahim Al Nadhairi, CEO, ASYAD Shipping and Drydocks; Emile Hoogsteden; CEO Sohar Port & Freezone; Shehab Al Rahma, ManagerOil Terminals, Commercial, DP World; Mark Darley, COO, Lloyds Register; Capt. B K Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director, The Shipping Corporation of India; and Stephen Kunzer, CEO, Lila Global. Key themes highlighted included the dilemma over whether to retrofit or replace; the range of future fuels options, and the likelihood that there would be no one dominant fuel by 2050; the lack of shipyard capacity to carry out retrofits; the important role of ports and terminals in supporting the tanker industry in transition, particularly thorough flexible bunkering arrangements; and the important of seafarer training in managing the transition to cleaner fuels.

Session 2, on “Tanker Operations in an Era of Change’, complemented the first session and looked at some of the technical solutions that can be used to respond to the core strategic environmental imperatives in an efficient and financially viable manner. It also explored some of the constraints that could be imposed both by the market conditions and legal and financial uncertainty.

A wide ranging session featured presentations from Rajiv Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Essar Ports; Morten Lero, Managing Director, DNV Maritime Advisory; Jamil al Ali, Middle East Regional Commercial & Business Development Director, Bureau Veritas; June Manoharan, Managing Director, Lenol DMCC; Katherine Yakunchenkova; Regional Director, Middle East, Blue Ocean Maritime Management; Rajiv Sarin, Managing Director, Alfa Laval, OceanGlide Air Lubrication; Ian Chung, Partner, HFW; Chris Peters, Head of Sales and Purchasing, Montfort Investments; and Stam Achilles, Head of Business Development, Wartsila. One of the main conclusions of this group was that, not only is there no ‘one size fits all’ alternative fuel choice, but there are a range of technology retrofit options that could play a key role in coming years. Consequently, there is likely to be a broad divergence according to vessel type, size and trade lane, with high newbuilding prices for tankers and scarce shipyard capacity becoming increasingly important influences.

The final session on support services proved highly

engaging with speakers from the worlds of ship registry, digitalisation, surveying and training highlighting the important role their respective sectors can and will play in meeting the evolving needs of tanker shipping.

Clive Woodbridge concluded: “This was a perfectly timed conference as there is no doubt that environmental issues have risen right to the top of the corporate agendas of tanker shipping owners and operators, with charterers also having a growing influence. Fuel and technology choices will be critical and if the conference did not have all the answers, at least attendees will have left with a much better understanding of the questions that need to be asked.”

he Maritime Standard Awards has celebrated its tenth anniversary in a special ceremony packed with its traditional quality, glitz, and glamour. The event, which took place on Tuesday November 7th at The Atlantis on The Palm, Dubai, attracted a record-breaking attendance with over 1100 guests packed into the ballroom, all of whom enjoyed a Greek-themed gala dinner and top-class live entertainment.

and Chairman Emirates Airline and Group, who has supported the event from the very beginning. His Highness received a special Visionary Leadership Award which was presented in person by The Maritime Standard Managing Director, Trevor Pereira, and which was relayed on the screen to those present.

It is testament to the Awards’ reputation and the esteem in which they are held that we have so many people in the ballroom tonight, with guests from across the region and internationally as well.”

Notable individual awards went to Idris Shahpurwalla, of Saifee Ship Spare Parts and Chandlers, for Young Person in Shipping; Catriona Jayasundera, of Colombo International Container Terminals, for Woman in Shipping; Captain Ammar Al Shaba of AD Ports Group for Outstanding Achievement; Dr Anil Sharma, of GMS, who received the Excellence Award; Eng Ahmed Alsubaey of Bahri, for Personality of the Year; and Rashid Isa Rishi Al Heddi, of Seamaster Maritime, who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition, the TMS Editor’s Choice Award was presented by Clive Woodbridge, TMS Editor, to Capt.

The entire proceedings were kept running smoothly by the master of ceremonies, Gavin Esler, one of the world’s most respected broadcasters and presenters, who shared some interesting anecdotes and observations from a career spent interviewing politicians and entertainment stars at the top of their careers. He was well supported by local presenter, Rania Ali, who added her usual style and professionalism to proceedings.

The evening witnessed the presentation of 32 different awards, covering different aspects of the maritime industry, as well as special awards for individual achievement. Big winners on the night included ADNOC L&S, which collected four trophies,

he ATPI-Marex Indian Maritime Premier League IMPL Box Cricket 2023 season 2 came to an end on Saturday evening at the Chitrakoot Grounds Andheri Mumbai with the spectacular win of Scorpio Marine Management by 61 runs over its competitor Suntech Group at the final match. The winning team was presented the coveted Cup. Capt Kamal Chadha, Editor & MD, Marex Media said, “The best team won. Our congratulations to team Scorpio. They displayed a true winning spirit and passion for the game. Best wishes to them indeed.

At the final match Suntech won the toss and elected to field. While Scorpio batting first scored 112 runs at the loss of 6 wickets, with batsmen Amol scoring 36 | Maritime Matrix Today | December 2023

46 runs in 17 balls hitting five six’s, followed by Ankit scoring 33 runs in 13 balls with four six’s.

Suntech chasing the target could manage to score 51 runs all down in the stipulated 8 overs. Bharat Kharwa scored 17 runs in 13 balls, hitting two sixes.

Season 2 of the ATPI-Marex Indian Maritime Premier League IMPL Box Cricket 2023 had begun with much fanfare on December 15, with 28 teams from various shipping companies from across the maritime industry playing. Every participating team had to play its three league matches and qualify further. The 28 teams were equally divided into 7 groups (Groups A–G) with each group consisting of 4 teams.

The two-day event witnessed the zeal and spirit of cricket as at times the fitness of the players was challenged with some quick fielding and cheeky runs between the wickets.

Of the overall 28 teams, 4 teams played their way to the semifinals. The semifinal matches were held between Scorpio vs OSM Thome and Seaspan vs Suntech.
