DON’T JUMP to conclusions too fast.
6
Everyone can access the genetics of the world’s most talented showjumpers. Mares are the cornerstone of breeding. We put our best foot forward to make the genes of showjumping’s best proven damlines accessible to every breeder in the world, offering the most transparent buying and breeding experience. At ‘Mares of Macha’ the bar is set high. Because the name ‘MoM’ is reserved only for a mare who has performed at 5* level, whose offspring have placed at 5* level, or who has been bred from the world’s best damlines. That’s why our mares roam in the vast and sunny fields of Northern Italy, surrounded by the best care on a self-managed property.

OUR STORY
History
14
In 2018, we set ourselves a goal: breeding exceptional showjumping horses. Essentially that’s the goal that every breeder has, but we aimed high and started to figure out what all these top performers have in common. We ended up with three markers that most stars share: pure performance, the ability to pass on talent to the offspring, and depth of performance in the damline & family. With that knowledge in mind, we went straight to the source. To Stephan Conter, where we managed to find and buy the holy grail for many breeders. Goya, a young and direct daughter of the unsurpassed Usha van ’t Roosakker and sister of several 5* Grand Prix horses. At Jos Lansink’s, we found a daughter of Ta Belle van Sombeke – a sister of Glock’s London. The icing on the cake was Contara, the mother of Chacco-Blue. Our breeding project had been launched.
Macha is a goddess from Irish mythology who is often depicted with a foal, symbolizing the importance of mares. She can be seen as the protector of the mares in our care. Since the start, the collection has grown to include nearly 40 mares—each carefully selected to meet our three defining markers. Some even score the maximum on all three criteria. With the foundation laid, the project needed a name—one that would highlight the central role of our mares. These are the mothers of tomorrow’s sport horses, our MoMs: the Mares of Macha. Macha is a goddess from Irish mythology who is often depicted with a foal, symbolizing the importance of mares. She can now be seen as the protector of the mares in our care. Through our program, the genetics and talent of our mares are made accessible to every breeder, everywhere.

OUR STORY
Ten years ago, Roman Giani, a former rider and equestrian expert, founded Haras Abril in Lezama, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Haras Abril is renowned for its high-quality breeding and training of showjumping horses, focusing on a perfect balance of genetics, athleticism, and morphology. The stud farm features one of Argentina’s most advanced reproduction centers and employs professionals who annually visit Europe to source superior genetics from top stallions and broodmares. These European genetics, along with selected national broodmares, place Haras Abril at the forefront of national breeding, offering exceptional horses to clients in Argentina and beyond. During spring 2024, Haras Abril partnered with Mares of Macha, launching ‘Mares of Macha - Haras Abril’ in early July. This partnership provides customers with the option to select MoM embryos directly from Argentinean stock or have them imported from Europe immediately after purchase, ensuring pregnancies during the breeding season.

We’ve noticed that in recent years the importance of the damline has been continuously increasing. 42

STORY Arera C is one of Mares of Macha’s top earning sport horses. In her career, which lasted over eight years, this daughter of Indoctro won over € 900,000 in no less than ten international classes, seven at 5* level and two at 1.60m. She placed in an astonishing 21 World Cups and 5* Grand Prix across the globe. She won the Amsterdam Grand Prix and ended 3rd with the Dutch team in Aachen. Her competitive mentality, which runs through the entire family, led her to a placing percentage of 47%. This means that she won part of the prize money in almost half of the classes she entered. Her great-granddam, Jacobin, by Ramiro Z, is the dam of Bart C, who was runner-up in the Lexington Grand Prix with Erynn Ballard, and 8th in the Harrisburg Grand Prix with Molly Ashe Cawley. STORY Goya is a direct daughter of probably the world’s most famous broodmare, Usha van ‘t Roosakker. Sired by Kannan, Goya is also the sister of five international 5* Grand Prix horses of which two have actually won a 5* Grand Prix. She is also the full sister of the approved stallion, George Z. One of the full sisters of Goya, the Grand Prix performer Babbe van ’t Roosakker, is the dam of three international 5* Grand Prix horses and another two horses that compete up to 1.55m level. It seems that Goya will follow in the footsteps of her legendary dam, as her first offspring were already performing at 1.45m level at a young age. One of them, Emeraude Pommex Z (Emerald van’t Ruytershof), achieved a top 10 placing as a 7-year-old in the final of the WBFSH Jumping World 90

STORY Hot Diamond Di Villagana Z more than lives up to her name. This mare by Heartbreaker was born in 2021 out of the dam of the Olympic stallion Emerald van ’t Ruytershof. It is often forgotten that both the dam and the great-granddam of Hot Diamond and Emerald were successful sport horses and that sport is omnipresent in the family tree. A quick glance at the offspring of her dam, Carthina, says it all. She has already produced eight horses, including two licensed stallions, who have performed successfully up to the 1.60m level. Her daughters are continuing the legacy, with several of their own progeny competing at 1.50m and above — including a number who reached the very top at 1.60m. STORY In 2023, Mares of Macha announced the birth of Contara Beta, a unique clone of MoM’s Contara, the dam of the legendary stallion Chacco-Blue. With the ambition of preserving Contara’s exceptional genes, which lie at the foundation of Chacco-Blue’s many successes, attempts were initially made to obtain embryos from MoM’s Contara. After several unsuccessful attempts, however, it was decided to opt for cloning. Given the complexity of the process, it came as a great surprise that the very first attempt resulted in three successful pregnancies. From the start of this project, the intention has been to make this young mare available for breeding. In this way, Mares of Macha can guarantee that Contara’s valuable genetics will be preserved for future generations. 126

FUTURE MoMs
A future MoM is a mare who isn’t available (to breeders) just yet as she is too young. The main ambition of this Future MoMs-initiative is to guarantee access to proven breeding also in the future, when their embryos will become available. But first we let them do what they do best: experiencing the joy of growing up amid lush green pastures.

FUTURE MoMs
With the addition of the young mare Cheeky Chick Philyra V.V. Z, we welcome yet another direct offspring from proven 1.60m parents. The renowned Cassini I stands as her sire, while her dam, Coriana Van Klapscheut, was a former 5* Grand Prix mare ridden by Eric Lamaze and later by Pilar Lucrecia Cordon. Coriana excelled not only in sport but also as a broodmare, passing on her exceptional genes. She is the dam of several successful sport horses, including Goriana van Klapscheut (1.60m) and Koriano van Klapscheut (1.60m), who won the 2017 World Championship for 7-year-olds. This lineage is known for its first-class attitude, competitive mentality, and excellent jumping qualities. Cheeky Chick’s recruitment as a Future MoM is the outcome of a collaborative investment by Mares of Macha, the Millar family (KPCM) and Team 40 Stable.

Sancha LS is widely recognized as a true championship horse. At the young age of nine, she competed in the London Olympics with Daniel Bluman, who was only 22 years old at the time. In addition to this achievement, the mare participated in the World Equestrian Games in Caen and secured many podium places at numerous iconic 5* level competitions. In the summer of 2024, Sancha traveled back to New York where she was reunited with her rider, Daniel Bluman.

After two years of grazing as a MoM on the Borgo la Caccia estate, Donatella returned to Belgium. There, she was warmly welcomed by the Philippaerts family to spend her old age at their family estate in Oudsbergen.
Reine-Fee spent her entire sporting career in the hands of Fabienne Daigneux and was led to World Cup and Grand Prix successes. Her daughter, Venue d’Fees Des Hazalles, is a Pan American Games medalist with the USEF Equestrian Team under Eve Jobs, and a finalist of the 2019 World Cup Final. Reine-Fee now spends her old age on the pastures of a big horse farm in the quiet region of West Flanders in Belgium, together with Whoopie C.

Interesting to know The Darley Arabian is the only stallion that appears in the pedigree of every single MoM at Mares of Macha. Darley was born in Aleppo, Syria, on the 4th of January 1700. This colt was bred and sold by Sheik Mirza II as a four-year-old in 1704 to Thomas Darley, a wealthy Englishman and British consul under Queen Anne. Darley’s father, Richard Darley, owned a stud farm at Aldby Park in England and Thomas Darley made it his mission to find a perfect Arab stallion to add to their farm. Although the Darley Arabian never raced and was only used for breeding, he was an incredibly influential sire. He lived to be 30, spending his life with Darley’s own mares. He died in 1730. THE MoM FARM - BORGO LA CACCIA
Welcome to Borgo la Caccia
Breeding starts with the well-being of our mares. Mares are the cornerstone of breeding. We keep our MoMs surrounded by the best care, in the vast and sunny fields of the Lake Garda region in Northern Italy. On a self-managed property, Borgo la Caccia. This is the home of the ‘proven breeding’ mares — a place where state-of-the-art breeding meets responsible horse care.

THE MoM FARM - BORGO LA CACCIA
Setting high standards Our ambition was set from the beginning: ‘we want to create a place to which we would entrust our own horses’. We didn’t want to settle for less and moved to Borgo la Caccia in Pozzolengo. Previously serving as a breeding stable and vineyard with a rich heritage, Borgo la Caccia offers everything that meets our standards: open and natural Mediterranean fields, vast paddocks covering 30 hectares dedicated solely to mares, and the mild climate of the Lake Garda region that allows for year-round grazing. In brief, the ideal location where we and our team of experts can put the well-being of the mares first.

The right infrastructure In the main stable area of Borgo la Caccia, you’ll find two adjacent stable complexes with spacious individual stall boxes for every mare. All stall boxes are equipped with a large stable window on both the inside and outside, which captures sunlight optimally. Piles of fresh straw and hay are always there. In addition, Borgo la Caccia also has an in-house examination and scanning box, washing stations and solaria. This way, routine checks and grooming appointments can easily take place on site. Around the stables of Borgo La Caccia, you’ll find 15 paddocks. With a size of about 2 hectares each, they offer the mares ample space to run and rest. Every paddock has a shelter, strategically oriented to protect the horses from sun and weather during all seasons.
We keep our mares surrounded by the best care, in the vast and sunny fields of the Lake Garda region in Northern Italy. On a self-managed property. Where the mares decide At Borgo la Caccia, we aim to create daily routines that feel natural to the horses. That is why we want the mares to graze outside most of the time. Nevertheless, our team makes sure they always have access to their own individual boxes. And if specific situations emerge, they spend as much time inside the complex as necessary. As social creatures, horses are a lot like people. Most of them enjoy the company of others. Our paddocks are spacious enough to accommodate up to 5 mares grazing together. Our team takes time to understand the mares and their particular needs. We observe and study them, figuring out which horses like to be together so we can place them in the same paddock. Taking the time to know and respect them is the foundation of our work — the mares get to choose their group.

Our team of experts
Staff of Borgo la Caccia The staff of Borgo la Caccia includes an in-house veterinarian and a stable manager, who check on the mares every day. Our team of 6 stable workers is responsible for the feeding, the maintenance of the stables and paddocks, and the group interactions. They spend most of their time out in the fields with the MoMs.
Nutritionist Our nutritionist tracks the weight of each mare on a monthly basis and creates a diet adapted to their specific health requirements. These diets include roughage like hay and grass, supplemented with our personal breeding mix, vitamins and minerals.
Farrier Because of their background, many mares feel better with horseshoes. A professional farrier, who visits all the mares several times a month, is also part of our team of experts at Borgo la Caccia.
Dentist Each year, the dental team visits for the mares’ dental checkup.
160
Taking the time to know and respect them is the foundation of our work.
Making it personal Many mares, especially those who have competed in the sport, are used to special care. Anticipating their future needs, professional grooms perform ‘grooming treatments’ every month. During each session, mares are brushed, manes are trimmed, and hooves are treated. Regular visits by experts and our staff’s 24/7 availability result in a personal bond between our staff and the mares — and enable us to act without delay.

THE MoM FARM - BORGO LA CACCIA
Our approach to breeding We strive for an optimal balance between well-being and reproduction by choosing state-of-theart techniques & strict follow-up. Borgo la Caccia is strategically located near Avantea, the laboratory that is the European leader in farm animal reproduction, and highly regarded in the field of assisted equine breeding. We arrange weekly scanning at our main stable. The mares are checked by our in-house veterinarian and go to Avantea only when the time is right. A limited number of OPU sessions are organized per year.
We strive for an optimal balance between well-being and reproduction. 162

It feels like our breeding project has advanced three decades in just three years. This project, fueled by both the joy of watching young horses grow and clear commercial ambitions, became their new venture. In an interview, Karen shared their experience with Mares of Macha: “From the outset, we aimed for the very best and knew we needed to work with top-tier damlines. Mares of Macha has truly been a breath of fresh air in the horse breeding world. Walter Ulan — Slovakia Entrepreneurial cosmopolitan Breeder & customer of Mares of Macha
Next year, I will start breeding with my own Werly Chin-mare! In the early stages of Mares of Macha, Walter made a bold move by acquiring multiple embryos from renowned bloodlines such as Werly Chin de Muze and VDL Groep Eureka. This strategic decision ensured that he would have the essential genetics in-house, enabling him to focus on refining and expanding his breeding program. Now, with his first MoM offspring reaching maturity, Walter is ready to advance his breeding efforts, confident in the quality and potential of the horses he has carefully nurtured. During a recent visit from Klaas, Walter proudly showcased his MoM offspring. With a broad smile and a twinkle in his eye, he watched as the young horses ran freely. “Next year, I will start breeding with my own Werly Chin-mare,” he shared. Until then, and hopefully for a long time after that, Walter continues his cherished tradition of visiting our team annually during a trip to Italy. We are all very fond of Walter and eagerly look forward to welcoming him, his partner, and his nephew for many more years of shared memories and success.

Mares of Macha opened up a completely new world for my passion! Mikko has been immersed in the equestrian world for over 40 years, breeding his first foal at 21. His passion drives him to track every key competition, result, and statistic, shaping him into an outstanding breeder with a strong vision and well-founded strategy. “With Mares of Macha, I found the right partner at the perfect time. As competition in the breeding world intensifies, Mares of Macha opened up a completely new world for my passion, enabling me to strengthen my position as a breeder. This collaboration allowed me to work with world-class damlines that I had always wanted for my breeding program, and to combine them with the stallions I trust and value the most,” shared Mikko. Last summer, during a visit to the MoM Farm, Borgo la Caccia, Mikko shared his valuable insights into the mares and stallions he selected. We eagerly look forward to the arrival of his promising MoM offspring from Flip’s Little Sparrow and Sancha LS, expected to be born next year.

Adam Deering — United Kingdom Entrepreneur Owner of Carrera Stud
What surprised and inspired me most was how personally invested the Mares of Macha team is in their clients’ success. Driven by a deep admiration for athleticism and bloodlines, Adam Deering founded Carrera Stud — a dynamic and ambitious operation combining high-level breeding with strong sport ambitions. Together with a talented team of riders, Carrera Stud develops young horses for the international stage, while building a carefully selected broodmare band to secure the future. “Breeding top-level showjumpers is our focus and passion here at Carrera Stud, but finding the right foundation mares was the turning point in bringing real depth, quality and direction to our program. That’s what led us to Mares of Macha. From the moment we connected with them, I was impressed by their knowledge, integrity, and commitment to quality breeding. Their mares aren’t just names on paper, they’re top quality athletes with proven performance and pedigrees designed to carry excellence forward. What surprised and inspired me most was how personally invested the Mares of Macha team is in their clients’ success. They took time to understand our goals for the sport and helped us to choose mares that truly aligned with our vision. The support didn’t stop after the purchase either. It’s been a collaborative journey, and their insight continues to shape how we raise and develop our young horses. Our breeding program is now stronger, clearer, and more ambitious than ever. I’m proud of the foals we’re producing - bold, balanced, and bred to perform - and I know this is only the beginning. Partnering with Mares of Macha has been one of the most meaningful steps in our journey.”

Sharon Berkowitz-Meijers — France Breeder & customer of Mares of Macha
From the very first contact, I felt welcome and taken seriously. Originally from South Africa, Sharon Berkowitz-Meijers grew up with horses and competed successfully up to 1.45m level. Breeding, however, was an entirely new world for her. Driven by a long-held dream to start her own showjumping breeding program, she found the perfect opportunity with Mares of Macha. A chance to combine her passion for top sport horses with access to some of the best damlines in the world. “Starting out as a young breeder can feel overwhelming. The world of top sport horses is vast and complex. You might know which bloodlines you want, but not where to find the right mares or what a fair price should be. Mares of Macha offers exactly that missing piece of the puzzle. On their website, you know exactly which mares are available, including prices, which are the same for everyone. It’s not only transparent but also highly accessible. You don’t need to be a well-known name to gain access to some of the best damlines in the world. For me, the biggest advantage was being able to select the right mares without the stress. You know from the start what you’ll be paying, they’re approachable, they think along with you, and you can exchange ideas with them. The service doesn’t stop after the purchase. Through their online platform, you stay informed at every step: when the embryo is implanted, when the next check is due, and how it went. As a client, you feel guided all the way up to the moment you take your recipient mare home. Even beyond. There’s genuine interest in the foals afterwards. They care about what comes from their mares. I’m truly excited about what the future will bring.”

Eleanor O’Dea — Ireland Show jumping breeder Sells her best young horses to international riders
Through Mares of Macha I now have a foal out of a former Grand Prix mare by one of the most sought-after stallions in the sport. That is a combination I would have been outbid on at any auction.
Eleanor O’Dea breeds show jumpers in Ireland alongside a full-time job. She buys foals and embryos, brings the young horses on with a rider, and sells the best to international riders abroad.
“Through Mares of Macha I now have a foal out of a former Grand Prix mare by one of the most sought-after stallions in the sport. That is a combination I would have been outbid on at any auction. For a breeder at my scale, that access changes everything: you can reach dam lines you could never breed or buy yourself at home. The price was fixed before anything happened, the veterinary work was included, and I only paid the balance once the mare was confirmed in foal. I knew exactly what I was committing to. And you can trust these people: they’re not going to disappear overnight and leave you with no foal and your money gone. You feel like you’re in safe hands. The Mares of Macha team stayed with me long after the sale. All the paperwork was in order, I was kept posted at every stage, and once the foal arrived, they even came to Ireland to see it. It’s like going into a sweet shop: you pick what you want, and they do all the hard work. I would have no hesitation recommending Mares of Macha to 176
any breeder.”
