FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL A Season of Momentum on the Mountain What a memorable fall and winter it has been on Storm King Mountain!

This winter brought the most snow the region has experienced in many years. Students embraced the snow, trying their hand at sledding, building a surprisingly long-lived igloo on the field, skiing at West Point and other local areas, snowshoeing, and building the occasional snowman. It was beautiful, to be sure, but it was also a long and cold winter, and the SKS community was ready for the grass and flowers to return.

On March 4th, the entire community came together to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for our new Academic Center building, a renovation and expansion of Dyar Hall. After a foggy start to the day, the sun came out just in time for our celebration–an auspicious start. You can read more about the groundbreaking ceremony and the new building plans on page four.

I hope that you will feel similarly inspired by the gifts from our alumni, parents, neighbors and friends, and consider a donation to the building to fully fund this project and to be a part of this exciting new chapter in Storm King’s history.

The School’s leadership, faculty, staff, and Board continue to make progress on the four pillars of our

Strategic Plan, which you’ll recall was launched last year. Among other initiatives, we’ve continued to build and strengthen ties with other non-profits and businesses in the Hudson Valley and beyond, increasing opportunities for our students to participate in service, explore the arts, and participate in opportunities with colleges and universities. To that end, and in partnership with the Executive Director of Black Rock Forest, Isabel Ashton, we hosted a gathering of 15 local non-profit leaders on the Storm King campus in October, and we’ve deepened our ties with the local business community via our participation in the Cornwall and the Orange County Chambers of Commerce. You can read more about one of these local opportunities for our students at the Magazzino museum, which allowed students a window into how museums and exhibits are designed and run (see page 54).

Finally, we have received the great news in January that The Storm King School has successfully completed our 10-year Accreditation process with NYSAIS (New York State Association of Independent Schools).

All of these efforts–the new building, progress on the Strategic Plan, and

the successful self-study and accreditation visit–have involved so many of you, and I’m grateful for the collective work, ideas, and inspiration from our larger Storm King community. It has been a memorable 2025-2026 school year, and I look forward to updating you on our progress on all fronts in the next issue of On the Mountain!

Building for the Future:

Storm King Breaks Ground on a New Academic Center

For nearly 160 years, The Storm King School has stood on Storm King Mountain overlooking the Hudson River, evolving over time while remaining grounded in the history and traditions that shape life and learning on the Mountain. On the morning of March 4, 2026, that continuing story reached an important milestone as students, faculty, trustees, alumni, and members of the

As the ceremony began in front of Dyar Hall, the morning fog lifted over the Hudson Highlands, allowing sunlight to spread across Storm King’s scenic campus. The gathering marked the beginning of the School’s first major academic construction project in decades and the realization of a vision long anticipated by the Storm King community.

Director of Development Sarah Fulton ’09 welcomed the assembled guests and thanked the many supporters whose efforts had helped bring the project to its current point. Soon after, the Storm King Choir sang the School’s Alma Mater, setting a reflective and celebratory tone for the morning.

A HISTORY OF CAMPUS TRANSFORMATION, 1958–1984

Long before the excitement of the 2026 groundbreaking, Storm King experienced several transformative periods of campus growth. The last major academic expansion occurred between 1958 and 1963, when Headmaster Warren Leonard and Trustee Stephen P. Duggan guided a series of ambitious projects that expanded and modernized classrooms, dormitories, and athletic facilities. sks.org / 5

BUILDINGS COMPLETED 1958-1984

OGDEN LIBRARY (1958) A modern library that became the intellectual hub of campus. Today, the building houses classrooms and is called Ogden Hall.

DYAR HALL (1958) Named for Malcolm H. Dyar, a beloved teacher, coach, and dean, Dyar Hall became the academic heart of the School. Its dedication in 1959 marked a milestone for the community and set a standard for future growth.

HIGHMOUNT DORMITORY (1958) AND DEMPSEY DORMITORY (1959) Expanded residential life and fostered a vibrant boarding community.

STILLMAN SCIENCE BUILDING (1961) Named after Black Rock Forest benefactor and SKS Trustee Dr. Ernest G. Stillman, Stillman Science Building provided laboratories and classrooms for science and mathematics classes.

NEW GYMNASIUM (1963) Enhanced athletics and physical education programs, supporting the School’s emphasis on balance of mind and body.

After this mid-century expansion, the campus continued to evolve. In 1984, the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre was dedicated as a performance and assembly space, a gift from the Walter Reade Jr. Foundation in honor of alumnus Walter Reade Jr. ’35. The theater became a central space for arts, assemblies, and community gatherings, highlighting Storm King’s commitment to a well-rounded education that included the performing arts.

This timeline of growth shows how Storm King has consistently adapted to changing times, balancing enduring strength and history with forward-looking vision.

Building for the Future

Following the alma mater, Head of School Lisa Shambaugh addressed the crowd, placing the occasion within the context of Storm King’s broader history and connecting it to the School’s last period of major campus development in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She recalled the dedication of Dyar Hall, Ogden Library, and Highmount Dormitory in 1958–1959, a time when Headmaster Warren Leonard emphasized that dreams could become reality “if enough people work hard, have faith, and are backed up by generosity.”

“That spirit has guided us on the path to building this new Academic Center,” Ms. Shambaugh said. “This project has been made possible by the hard work, faith, and generosity of so many people in this community.”

Designed by John D. Fuller P.E., P.C. of Port Jervis, New York, the new Academic Center will expand the School’s academic facilities while integrating with the existing Dyar Hall. When completed, the project will feature ten classrooms, collaborative learning areas, and the Warren Leonard Lobby—a gathering space named in honor of the headmaster who oversaw Storm King’s last major campus expansion. The building will also include a dedicated faculty meeting room, a courtyard garden, and a terrace overlooking the Hudson Valley.

Ms. Shambaugh recognized the partners helping bring the project to completion, including Ramon Gonzalez and Triple R Development as gen-

eral contractor and Erik Collier of Collier Construction as the project’s owner’s representative.

The project has been made possible through the generosity of many members of the Storm King community. Leadership gifts from alumni Michael Fischer ’82 and David Slap ’75 provided nearly $1 million toward the campaign, and a recent anonymous gift of $750,000 brought the effort significantly closer to full funding. In total, more than 80 donors have already contributed to the Academic Center initiative.

Speaking on behalf of the Board of Trustees, First Vice Chair/ Secretary Robert Docherty ’72 emphasized the significance of the project within the School’s broader planning efforts. “This marks a giant step forward in implementing our strategic plan and strengthening the academic and residential experience for our students,” he said. “Storm King has endured and adapted for nearly 160 years because it continues to evolve while staying true to the qualities that make this community special.”

Building for the Future:

One of the ceremony’s most memorable moments came when senior Keiyona Jolly ’26 stepped forward to read Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem The Builders, reflecting on how each generation contributes to the future through the work it leaves behind.

For Keiyona, the reading carried personal meaning. “Reading The Builders made me think about how each class contributes something to Storm King,” she said afterward. “This building will be part of the legacy we leave for the students who come after us.”

The Storm King School Enduring Strength, Limitless Possibilities

STRATEGIC PLAN 2030 Students attending the ceremony also spoke about what the new facility could mean for their daily experience at the School.

“I think it’s amazing that we get to watch something like this happen while we’re still here,” said sophomore Eylul Bakal ’28.

Freshman Ronan Kraeutler ’29 added, “The classrooms and labs sound amazing. I’m excited about the projects and experiments we’ll be able to do.”

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic moment marking the official start of construction. School leaders, trustees, and student representatives gathered together to put the first ceremonial shovels to the ground. As applause spread through the crowd, the project that had been discussed and planned for years formally began.

For Storm King, the groundbreaking represents more than the start of a new building. It reflects the School’s continuous effort to strengthen its academic program while preparing its graduates for a changing world.

“The new Academic Center is more than a building,” Ms. Shambaugh reflected. “It is a promise to our students.”

The new Academic Center is one of the first major milestones in Storm King’s strategic vision for the future.

In October 2024 and 2025, the Board of Trustees gathered to develop a roadmap for the School’s next chapter. Guided

by Head of School Lisa Shambaugh and professionals from Educators Collaborative, the planning process included input from faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni.

The result was Enduring Strength, Limitless Possibilities: The Storm King School Strategic Plan 2025–2030, which emphasizes:

Strengthening engagement across the Storm King community

Expanding innovation in academics, arts, and athletics

Enhancing campus facilities and learning environments

Ensuring long-term financial sustainability

“The Strategic Plan is both a reflection of who we are and a roadmap for who we aspire to be,” Ms. Shambaugh explains. “The new Academic Center represents the first step in turning that vision into reality."

Four Storm King alumni, one dinner, and the long reach of the

MOUNTAIN

T

here is a particular rhythm to admissions travel in spring—a season shaped equally by urgency and optimism. Families are making decisions, students are imagining their futures, and schools are presenting themselves at their very best. My calendar quickly fills with flights, car rentals, and carefully scheduled meetings, each one an opportunity to share the story of The Storm King School with a new audience. But every so often, I step just slightly off that well-worn path.

In mid-March, during one such stretch of travel, I made a deliberate detour north to Ithaca, New York—not for a prospective family or a school visit, but for something more personal. I was joined by my colleague Ashley Cabrera ’19, our Manager of Alumni Relations. Ashley’s work is, at its core, about connection—maintaining the threads that bind Storm King graduates to one another and to the Mountain they once called home. Together, we set out to meet a small group of young alumni now studying at Cornell University, eager to learn not just how they were doing, but who they were becoming.

We gathered at Gola Osteria, a restaurant that feels less like a commercial space and more like a well-kept secret. The room was cozy and softly lit—the kind of place where conversations stretch longer than intended and meals become occasions.

Wooden tables, flickering candlelight, the quiet hum of conversation—it was the perfect setting for what became an unforgettable evening.

Around the table sat three Storm King alumni: Zoe Buddie ’22, Elena Centeno ’23, and Cristopher Farias ’23. A fourth, Seth Vieira ’22, was unable to join us that night, though his absence was felt in the easy familiarity with which his name surfaced.

We caught up with him a few days later.

Zoe: The Courage to Choose Your Own Stage

Z

oe Buddie has spent much of her life around the spotlight—but she has never relied on it. The daughter of Mike Buddie, who spent part of his career with the New York Yankees, Zoe grew up in an environment where attention and expectation often arrived uninvited. But at Storm King, she made something clear early on: whatever stage she stood on, she intended to earn her place there.

Zoe was a triple threat in every sense. On the court, she captained the girls varsity volleyball team to multiple NEPSAC titles, leading with a quiet intensity that made others better simply by being around her. On stage at the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre, she brought characters to life in Storm King productions of Chicago, Twelve Angry Jurors, and Godspell, commanding attention not by force, but through presence. And in the classroom, she operated at a level that made even the most rigorous coursework seem entirely within reach.

She arrived at Storm King as a sophomore, following her father, Mike, who had accepted a position as Athletic Director at West Point. Transitions like that are rarely simple for teenagers, but Zoe made it seem seamless.

At Cornell, she has continued to build on that foundation in ways that feel distinctly her own. She was drawn to the university’s Education and Justice program, an interdisciplinary path that allowed her to combine her love for acting with a deeper commitment to social impact. During her freshman year, she enrolled in a course that brought students into a nearby Five Points maximum-security correctional facility, where they worked with incarcerated individuals to develop and perform theatrical productions. It is the kind of experience that challenges assumptions—about art, about justice, about people. And it is exactly the kind of opportunity Zoe was prepared to embrace.

When I asked her how Storm King had prepared her for Cornell, her answer came without hesitation. “It gave me the chance to try everything,” she said. “But also to figure out what really mattered to me.”

That balance—between exploration and intention—is not easily taught. Yet it is central to the Storm King experience. Zoe spoke about being encouraged to step outside her comfort zone, to take risks, to say yes to opportunities that felt unfamiliar or even intimidating. But just as importantly, she learned something else. “Don’t be afraid to say no,” she added. “I would rather do less, but do it well.” It is a lesson that has served her well at Cornell, where the abundance of opportunity can be as overwhelming as it is exciting.

Zoe also spoke about something more subtle, but perhaps even more important: confidence in the presence of authority.

At Storm King, relationships between students and faculty are defined by openness and approachability. Teachers are mentors, guides, collaborators. That dynamic, Zoe explained, translated directly to her experience at Cornell. “I was never afraid to talk to my professors,” she said. “That felt normal to me.” She still recalls, with clear affection, the teachers who shaped her time on the Mountain—Ms. and Mr. Mendlewski, Mr. Freeman, Mr. Hauser, Mr. Ciunga, and the Fultons.

Each name carried with it a story, a memory, a moment of connection that extended far beyond the classroom.

And now, as she prepares to graduate this May, Zoe stands at the edge of another transition. For years, she has held onto a vision—one that, to some, might seem impractical, even risky. After Cornell, she will move to Los Angeles with her best friend, pursuing a career in acting.

She will bartend to support herself, audition relentlessly, and rely, in part, on the network she has begun to build.

It is, in many ways, the most uncertain path available.

And also, unmistakably, the right one for her.

Elena: Leadership Without Limits

I

f Zoe’s story is one of artistic courage, Elena Centeno’s is one of sustained momentum.

At Storm King, Elena was visible everywhere.

She captained both the soccer and basketball teams, chaired the National Honor Society and the Intersectional Feminism Club, and maintained a level of academic excellence that placed her among the top students in her class. She was the kind of student who seemed to operate with an internal engine—always moving, always building, always leading.

And yet, when presented with a series of opportunities that would have allowed her to continue her athletic career at the collegiate level— including a full soccer scholarship offered during Arsenal FC summer camp on our campus—she made a decision that surprised many. She said no.

Not because she lacked passion for the sport, but because she saw a different path more clearly. She chose Cornell.

At the time, it was a risk.

Walking away from guaranteed opportunities is never easy, particularly when they come with the promise of immediate recognition. But Elena understood something fundamental: alignment matters more than speed.

At Cornell, she has continued to operate at full capacity. Pursuing a degree in Sociology with minors in Business and Law & Society, she balances a demanding course load with extracurricular commitments. Over the summer, she interned for Student Agencies Inc. in Ithaca,

working in operations. This year, she will return—as a member of the company’s executive team, overseeing new business development. It is a trajectory that speaks not only to her capability, but to her adaptability.

When reflecting on her time at Storm King, Elena emphasized the breadth of opportunities available to her—and, more importantly, the expectation that she would take advantage of them. “Leadership was everywhere,” she said. “In sports, in clubs, in fundraisers. You were always being asked to step up.”

She also pointed to something more structural: the academic schedule itself. At Storm King, students typically take three to four courses per semester—a format that mirrors the college experience more closely than the traditional high school model.

“When I got to Cornell, it felt familiar,” she explained. “I knew how to manage my time. I knew when to study, when to work out, when to participate.” That sense of preparedness, she suggested, gave her an immediate advantage.

But when asked about the single greatest influence on her academic development, she did not hesitate: Ms. Alanna Whitesell Rosenthal (Chair of the Math Department at Storm King). “She taught math the way college professors teach,” Elena said. “And she understood me—not just academically, but as a person. She understood my stress levels.”

It is a comment that speaks to a broader truth about Storm King: rigor and support are not opposing forces.

They are complementary. And in Elena’s case, they have produced a student—and now a young professional— who moves through the world with both confidence and clarity. sks.org / 13

Cristopher: Quiet Determination, Lasting Impact

C

ristopher Farias does not command attention in the traditional sense. He doesn’t need to.

Seated to my right that evening, he began the night by guiding us through the wine offerings on Gola Osteria’s menu—a task he approached with a level of knowledge and enthusiasm that caught us all slightly off guard. Cornell’s agricultural program, widely regarded as one of the best in the world, offers courses in wine tasting, and Cristopher had taken full advantage. He spoke with particular interest about Peruvian wines, connecting them to his own heritage. It was a small moment, but a revealing one.

Cristopher is thoughtful.

Intentional. Deeply aware of where he comes from—and where he is going.

He joined Storm King as a sophomore in the fall of 2020, transitioning from Fordham Prep in New York City, where he had spent his freshman year commuting daily from New Windsor. I remember first being introduced to his mother, Kathie, through another Storm King parent—a connection that would ultimately lead him to our campus.

From the beginning, Cristopher established himself as a quiet leader. Not through volume, but through consistency. In the classroom, his academic strength was evident almost immediately. Outside of it, his presence was steady, reliable, grounded.

At Cornell, he is enrolled in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, pursuing a double major in finance and accounting. It is, in many ways, a direct continuation of a promise he made long ago. “My mom studied accounting,” he told me that evening. “But she had to stop when she got pregnant with me. I told her

one day I would finish that degree for her. And here I am.”

There are moments, in conversations like these, when the room grows just a bit quieter. This was one of them.

Cristopher spent last summer interning with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Boston. This summer, he will return to the firm—this time in Manhattan. His trajectory is clear, his path well-defined. And yet, when asked how he arrived at this point, his answer did not focus on his own effort.

Instead, he spoke about Storm King. “I didn’t think I was good enough to apply to a place like Cornell,” he admitted. “It was Mr. Constantinidi (Storm King’s Director of College Counseling) who convinced me.” Confidence, in this sense, is not simply an internal trait. It is something that can be given—cultivated, encouraged, reinforced.

Cristopher also emphasized the academic rigor of his Storm King experience, noting that the way teachers approached their classes closely mirrored the expectations he now encounters at Cornell.

At the same time, he acknowledged the intensity of his current environment.

“Everyone here was at the top of their class,” he said. “Everyone is as smart as you are.” And yet, he has found ways to stand out—not by changing who he is, but by building on the foundation he already had.

Cristopher remains in contact with his former teachers at Storm King, reaching out for guidance, sharing updates, and expressing gratitude. Recently, he contacted Mr. Kiperman (art department faculty) for advice on a film project and thanked Mr. DeLuzio (science department faculty) for a coding course that unexpectedly prepared him for a class at Cornell.

“I realized—I already knew how to do this,” he said.

It is, perhaps, the most understated form of success: recognizing, in a new environment, that you are already equipped.

Seth: Purpose in Motion

S

eth speaks with a quiet conviction, the kind that does not need to announce itself. It reveals itself gradually—in the depth of his commitments, in the clarity of his purpose, and in the way he reflects on where he has been. But long before Cornell, before leadership roles and academic distinction, there was a first impression—one that has stayed with me ever since.

In more than two decades in admissions, I have had the privilege of meeting thousands of students. Each brings something different, but every so often, one stands out in a way you don’t forget.

Seth was one of them. He was in seventh grade when we first met—small in stature, maybe five feet tall, dressed in a suit and tie. His handshake was firm, his presence composed.

He answered questions with clarity and asked his own with intention. Even then, there was something unmistakable about him—the quiet certainty of a student who understood, perhaps before anyone else did, that he was meant for something more.

Years later, sitting across from him again—this time reflecting on his journey—the impression had not changed. It had simply deepened. “Thank you for making my experience a beautiful one,” he told me, thinking back to his five years on the Mountain. “For welcoming me with open arms and seeing something in me that I couldn’t see in myself at 12 years old.”

At Cornell, Seth has not simply participated—he has built. As political action chair for Black Students Union, he has helped organize conversations and demonstrations around some of the most pressing global issues of our time. At the same time, he founded and has led a weekly community, Black Men 4 Christ, gathering students every Sunday in a space that blends faith, identity, and brotherhood.

There is an intellectual rigor to Seth’s path that mirrors his sense of purpose. A double major in Africana

Studies and Philosophy, he speaks about his work not in terms of requirements, but in terms of questions—large, enduring questions about faith, history, and liberation.

His honors thesis examines Frederick Douglass through a theological lens, challenging conventional readings and asking what it means to interpret one of America’s most important voices through the language of faith. More broadly, Seth is drawn to the study of the Black Church and to confronting the persistent misconception that Christianity is merely a tool of oppression. In his words, it is something far more powerful: a source of liberation, particularly for those who have long stood at the margins.

That intellectual curiosity has already taken him far beyond Ithaca. A semester at the University of Cambridge offered both challenge and confirmation—an experience he described simply as “out of this world.”

There, immersed in rigorous theological study, he found not only affirmation of his academic direction, but a deeper confidence in his ability to pursue it at the highest level.

And yet, for all that Seth has accomplished, he returns often—almost instinctively—to Storm King. He speaks about the School not in broad generalities, but in specific, lived experiences: the international community that expanded his worldview before he even realized it, the relationships with teachers that taught him how to engage with professors as peers in conversation, and the small, daily interactions that built a sense of belonging. Most of all, he speaks about support— particularly during the most difficult moment of his young life, the loss of his mother. “I couldn’t imagine being where I am now without being where I was then,” he reflected.

This fall, Seth will take his next step at Duke University, pursuing a Master of Divinity with an eye toward a future that bridges two worlds: the pulpit and the classroom. Pastor and professor—both, not one or the other. It is a path that feels, in many ways, inevitable when you hear him speak. Not because it is easy, but because it is aligned—with his intellect, his experience, and his sense of calling. sks.org / 15

A Table in Ithaca

A Moment That Says EVERYTHING

A

s the evening drew to a close, the conversation began to slow in the way it naturally does when no one is quite ready for it to end. It was Zoe who offered the final story.

It took place the previous summer, on a long, hot day in Ithaca. She had just learned that her dog had passed away. After hours of rehearsal in a theater, she was exhausted—emotionally and physically. On her way home, she stopped at a 7-Eleven convenience store for a slushy and a snack.

At the register, her credit card was declined. It was a small moment, in the grand scheme of things.

But in that moment, it felt like one more thing going wrong on an already difficult day. She stepped outside, defeated, sitting in her car. Then, a knock on the window.

It was Elena.

Unbeknownst to Zoe, she had been standing in line behind her, watching the entire exchange. Without saying much, she had purchased the items and brought them out. No announcement. No gesture. Just presence. “What are the chances?” Zoe asked, recounting the story.

It is the kind of coincidence that feels almost improbable. Two Storm King graduates, in the same place, at the same moment, connected not by schedule or obligation, but by something deeper. Care. At the end of each issue of this magazine, there is a phrase: Caring for One Another Since 1867.

It is easy, at times, for such phrases to become symbolic—something we read without fully considering.

But that night, in Ithaca, it felt entirely real.

The article concluded with a solutions-oriented perspective, focusing on ways students can better manage attention and distraction in a digital world. “This is why it is important to let students take ownership of their habits,” shared Keiyona.

“Using features like app timers, focus mode, and do not disturb can prove more helpful than a simple ‘just pay attention.’ Students would benefit from being taught how to manage distractions and advocate for what they need and what helps them control their ADHD.” By the end of the independent study, Keiyona had achieved the goals she set at the beginning of the semester. She produced three polished pieces across different journalistic forms and developed a portfolio showcasing her skills in research, interviewing, and storytelling. One of her works—a profile piece—was selected for publication in On the Mountain (see page 20).

The experience highlights what independent studies can offer at The Storm King School: the chance for students to design their own learning journeys and pursue subjects that matter to them.

For Keiyona, the course was both a creative outlet and a step toward her future ambitions in writing and journalism.

She designed the course, challenged herself by writing in different forms, and wasn’t afraid to experiment creatively with difficult topics. That kind of curiosity and initiative is exactly what independent studies are meant to cultivate.

At The Storm King School, independent studies offer students the opportunity to pursue their passions in meaningful and personalized ways. This year, senior Keiyona Jolly ’26 partnered with English Department Chair Dr. Alex Finn-Atkins to create an Independent Study in Journalism, a student-designed course that explored the creativity, ethics, and profession of reporting.

According to Dr. Finn-Atkins, the project reflected Keiyona’s initiative from the very beginning. During the first week of the fall semester, she approached Dr. Finn-Atkins with an idea: she wanted to study journalism in depth. While the English department already offers courses such as Creative Writing and Rhetoric and Composition, there is not a dedicated journalism class. With Keiyona hoping to pursue writing in college, an independent study became the perfect solution.

Keiyona took the lead in shaping the course. At the start of the semester, she wrote the class description and outlined the goals for her work. “The objective of the independent study is to develop journalistic skills in research, interviewing, writing, and media literacy,” explained Keiyona. By the end of the study, the goal for the course was for Keiyona to assemble a portfolio containing at least three polished pieces of journalism as well as a published final project. “I wanted to learn how to analyze credibility, learn how to conduct background research, and understand how to incorporate multimedia aspects like photos and infographics into my work,” continued Keiyona.

With this framework in place, the semester unfolded as a structured exploration of three core genres of journalism. Keiyona designed the curriculum herself, organizing the course into three units: a news article, a profile piece, and an investigative feature.

Each unit required extensive research, interviews, drafting, and revision—mirroring the process professional journalists follow.

Throughout the semester, Dr. Finn-Atkins served as mentor and editor, helping refine ideas and guide the reporting process. One moment, however, stood out as particularly memorable.

For her final assignment—the investigative piece—Keiyona proposed taking a creative approach. Instead of writing a traditional feature, she framed the article as a crime report, with ADHD as the “crime” under investigation and teenagers as the “victims.” The piece examined possible causes of rising ADHD diagnoses among American teenagers, including technology overuse and social media, while incorporating perspectives from parents, psychologists, and students.

“This case involves serious accusations that ADHD and other correlating mental health disorders are on the rise amongst teenagers.

This is allegedly due to technology overconsumption and increasing use of social media. This report aims to analyze these claims through a thorough investigation into the matter and provide a plan of action to further advance to a resolution,” said Keiyona.

At The Storm King School, Mrs. Van Dunk is more than just a valued educator and dorm parent. She is also an immensely dedicated and passionate advocate for the deaf community. Her life is deeply rooted in deaf culture—from growing up with deaf parents to teaching ASL in high school—and shaped by experiences that taught her the importance of awareness and understanding, especially when it comes to the community.

Both of Mrs. Van Dunk’s parents are the only deaf people in their respective families. Their bond formed early: they met when they were seven years old and completed their schooling together.

Over the years, they developed a connection that reflects a common truth within the deaf community—that 90% of deaf people marry within the community.

From a young age, Mrs. Van Dunk learned how to navigate both the deaf and hearing worlds. Her family’s was the only deaf household in their New Jersey neighborhood, which made them stand out. Instead of loud ringing and noise, flashing light bulbs around the house served as signals—for the doorbell, the phone, a baby crying, or siblings fighting. A sequence of light flickers informed her parents of what was happening inside the home.

The lights were so vibrant that even neighbors could understand the goings-on in their household.

Local schools would occasionally take class trips to her home to observe this system, fascinated by how her family communicated and lived through visual cues. Mrs. Van Dunk also took on responsibilities at a young age. Because interpreters were unavailable at

the time, she interpreted her own parent-teacher conferences. She also answered the phone whenever it rang, learning how to use a dial phone by asking neighbors for help and eventually becoming the household’s official phone answerer.

Being a child of deaf parents meant that advocating for them was not always optional. Everyday situations often required her to speak up for them and make herself heard. Even routine tasks, such as grocery shopping, could become difficult.

When impatient customers huffed at her parents for not hearing them say “Excuse me” or “Pardon me,” young Mrs. Van Dunk would not hesitate to respond, explaining that her parents could not hear and reminding others that they deserved the same respect as anyone else.

Middle school brought new and even harsher challenges. She remembers overhearing cruel gossip from classmates who described her parents using derogatory terms after seeing them in their yard calling their dog inside. As she had before, she confronted this ignorance head-on, explaining that her parents were simply deaf—and that being deaf did not make them lesser in any way.

This advocacy continued in high school. Mrs. Van Dunk’s typing teacher once threatened to call her parents to complain about her behavior. When the teacher learned that her parents were deaf, she reacted with visible discomfort, as though calling them would somehow be inappropriate or offensive. Incidents like these, along with many others

throughout her life, made Mrs. Van Dunk realize the depth of misconceptions and lack of awareness surrounding deaf culture. She decided she would work to change those misunderstandings however she could.

Ironically, teaching was never part of Mrs. Van Dunk’s original plan. She initially worked in corporate America for several years before deciding she wanted to stay home with her children. After a few years as a stay-at-home mom, however, she realized that she simply was not “one of those ladies that lunch.” Wanting to continue spending meaningful time with her children while also working, she took a part-time job at a local daycare.

There, she began teaching even the youngest babies how to use very basic signs. When others saw how effective this was, they encouraged her to teach more and expand signing lessons to older children. Eventually, she began teaching American Sign Language (ASL) on a temporary basis at The Storm King School. After the program received strong interest and positive feedback from families, she was invited to teach ASL full-time on a permanent basis.

At Storm King, Mrs. Van Dunk has turned her classroom into a space that values empathy and awareness just as much as academics. Alongside ASL, she teaches students about deaf culture, helping them learn how to communicate and interact with the community effectively and respectfully.

“I enjoy teaching people about deafness and deaf culture,” she says. “Even at a small school like Storm King, where I teach just fourteen students in a class and send them out into the world year after year, I see my work as a meaningful way to remain an advocate— though in a different way than when I was a child.”

Mrs. Van Dunk’s journey—from a young girl interpreting for her parents to a respected teacher shaping young minds—shows that advocacy can take many forms, but it never fades.

Bridging Communities Through Food and Civic Learning Food is more than sustenance—it’s a compelling entry point into conversations about culture, community, and access. This past fall, 8th-grade students at The Storm King School explored those connections through a new civic engagement initiative led by faculty member Djazmina Guerrier, in partnership with the Smithsonian’s Democracy in Dialogue program.

Food as a Gateway to Civic Dialogue Ms. Guerrier joined a national cohort of educators in the summer of 2025, traveling to Washington, DC for an intensive three-day training hosted by the Smithsonian. There, she participated in workshops on dialogue facilitation, inquiry-based learning, and project design—all aimed at helping teachers bring civic dialogue into the classroom in meaningful, student-centered ways. Her experience laid the foundation for launching the program at Storm King.

Connecting Classrooms Across the Country The Democracy in Dialogue program engages students in inquiry-based learning and virtual exchange with peers from across the country. Storm King’s 8th graders collaborated with students from CV Koogler Middle School in Aztec, New Mexico, to examine how food reflects identity, economics, and shared challenges like food insecurity.

The program combined independent exploration with live dialogue sessions held on several Wednesday afternoons throughout the semester. Students began by investigating their own communities and looking at how food systems intersect with culture and access. That work became the foundation for virtual exchanges, where they engaged in meaningful discussions with their peers in New Mexico.

“Food became our central theme,” Ms. Guerrier explained. “It ties together identity, economics, culture, and history. Students created a shared story that highlighted both the uniqueness of their communities and the common issues they face.”

Preparing Future Civic Leaders The project culminated in a public showcase of student work in December 2025. According to Ms. Guerrier, the learning extended far beyond the conclusion of the program: “Students walked away with tools for civic dialogue, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding—skills they’ll carry with them for life.

They will see themselves not just as students, but as active participants in their communities.”

By connecting classrooms across regions and grounding learning in lived experiences, the Democracy in Dialogue program brings civic education to life—starting with a conversation around the dinner table. At Storm King, that work has helped to prepare our 8th-graders to become curious and empathetic future leaders.

MODEL UN Shines at the Masters School

T

he Storm King School Model United Nations (MUN) team had a standout fall season, showcasing strong preparation, diplomacy, and leadership at the Masters School Model UN Conference (MasMUN) on December 6-7, 2025.

At this prestigious conference, four SKS delegates tackled a wide range of committees from global security to international trade to a pop-culture crisis simulation.

Aadya Gorti ’27 earned a Verbal Commendation for her work as Mark (innie) in the Severance Committee while Yi Ding ’26 represented North Korea in the World Trade Organization.

Milana Rivera ’28 and Yagmur Demiroglu ’28 represented South Africa and Germany in the DISEC Committee, contributing thoughtfully to debates on disarmament and international security.

Sophomore Lucky Nguyen ’27 also earned a Verbal Commendation for his role on the U.S. Presidential Cabinet’s COVID-19 Response Committee at the United Nations School MUN Conference. This marked his second award of the season, following an Honorable Mention at the Stuyvesant High School MUN Conference in early November.

“The team continues to impress with their preparation, engagement, and leadership,” commented MUN faculty advisor Tim Gillett.

FALL FAMILY WEEKEND Celebrating Community, Connection and the Mountain

T

he Storm King School campus was alive with fall colors and smiling faces during this year’s Fall Family Weekend! The annual event, which took place on October 17-20, 2025, offered families a wonderful opportunity to experience life on the Mountain firsthand—celebrating their students’ achievements while strengthening connections within the SKS community.

The weekend began on Friday with in-person Parent-Teacher Conferences, where parents and guardians met with teachers to gain valuable insights into their children’s academic progress and daily life at Storm King. The crisp autumn air and vibrant foliage created a stunning backdrop as families moved between buildings for their meetings.

That afternoon, families gathered at The Homestead for a warm and welcoming reception hosted by Head of School Lisa Shambaugh.

Guests enjoyed light refreshments while mingling with faculty, staff, and fellow parents, then cheered on the girls JV and varsity volleyball teams who faced Oakwood Friends in the gym.

Saturday brought more opportunities for connection and adventure. Several families, along with faculty members, joined the annual hike up Storm King Mountain, taking in panoramic views of the Hudson River and the SKS campus before returning to support the boys JV and varsity soccer teams in matches against Northern Academy and Oakwood Friends.

Adding to the weekend’s excitement, this year’s Trivia Night fundraiser was a tremendous success. Thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of families, alumni, and sponsors, more than 125 participants came together for an evening of fun and friendly competition—raising over $17,000 to support the renovation of the SKS gym locker rooms. For more about Trivia Night, see page 56.

With no classes scheduled for the following Monday and Tuesday, many families extended their stay to make the most of the long weekend and enjoy extra time together.

HONORS PHYSICS Design, Testing, and Real-World Engineering

S

tudents in Dr. Feffer’s Honors Physics course engaged in a bridge building competition that provided hands-on experience with concepts they were studying.

In small teams, the students designed and constructed free-standing bridges from balsa wood following detailed competition guidelines. Each bridge was required to span a 40-centimeter gap, include a functional roadway with a specified width and height, and accommodate a testing apparatus.

These constraints required careful consideration of structural design, force distribution, and efficient use of materials.

“Bridges are analyzed using principles of statics, a topic we covered in this physics course, where all forces sum to zero,” said Dr. Feffer. “This competition was a fun way to end the semester and give the students a tangible introduction to trusses, a structural concept studied in mechanical engineering.”

During the testing phase, completed bridges were weighed and placed across the gap between tables. Weight was gradually added at the center of each structure until failure occurred, allowing students to observe how forces acted on their designs and how they ultimately failed. Performance was evaluated using an efficiency calculation that compared the maximum load supported to the mass of the bridge, reinforcing the importance of wellplanned, efficient design.

The bridge competition is a reflection of the broader academic goals of Honors Physics, the first half of AP Physics C: Mechanics. The course emphasizes calculus-based problem solving, laboratory investigation, and analytical reasoning in preparation for college level physics and engineering.

By combining rigorous academic study with experiential learning, the bridge building competition offered students a meaningful and engaging opportunity to put physics principles into practice while developing skills for future work in science and engineering.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Exploring, Discovering, and Learning in the Field

O

n the Mountain, Environmental Science is more than an academic subject— it’s a lived experience. Both inside and outside the classroom, students explore the interactions between humans and the natural world through an interdisciplinary curriculum that spans biology, ecology, earth science, and environmental policy. The course takes an interdisciplinary approach, blending biology, ecology, geography, earth science, and policy to help students understand the world around them and imagine solutions to environmental challenges.

During the fall semester, the course’s emphasis on experiential learning was brought to life during a visit to Black Rock Forest. Students participated in the “Friends of the Forest” Fall Foliage Hike, a self-guided experience that included opportunities to engage with researchers conducting studies in forest composition, bee diversity, and tree phenology.

The hike was a natural extension of the themes students are learning in class, bringing them to life in a realworld context. Listening to scientists working on pollinator diversity and explaining the seasonal behavior of oak and maple trees, students were able to connect class discussions about species interactions and climate indicators with actual fieldwork.

Earlier in the fall, students examined earth systems, water resources, and the natural cycles that support life on the planet. Walking through the forest, they were able to observe these systems in action, seeing how geology, hydrology, and ecology interact to support a thriving, biodiverse environment. As the class progressed to focus on ecosystems and biodiversity, the hike offered a good opportunity to learn about real-world research aimed at monitoring and preserving those ecosystems.

Later, the class studied global change, conservation, and sustainable futures—topics that were reinforced by the hike’s focus on forest restoration and ecological research.

Students came away with a better understanding of the course material and a clearer sense of how scientific knowledge informs environmental policy and stewardship efforts.

Environmental Science teacher Rob MacSwain noted the strong engagement of his students throughout the hike, particularly during discussions with researchers. “The students asked thoughtful questions and made meaningful connections to what we’ve studied in class,” he said. “It was clear they were inspired—not just by the science, but by the passion of the people doing the work.” By stepping into the field, students didn’t just study the environment—they experienced it, and gained a deeper sense of their role in protecting it.

Class of 2026 Connects and Reflects at Senior Retreat

he Storm King School Class of 2026 came together in September 2025 for the annual Senior Retreat—an important school tradition designed to help students strengthen their connections, reflect on the year ahead, and foster a shared sense of purpose for their final year.

Set against the natural backdrop of Black Rock Forest, the retreat took place at the Black Rock Forest Lodge, just a short walk from campus. Students and faculty advisors gathered at the theater before setting off together on foot, beginning the experience with a symbolic transition into nature and reflection. Upon their arrival, they were welcomed with a lively pizza party dinner, complete with sushi, ice cream, and other

treats, before diving into the evening’s activities.

The Retreat featured a series of activities aimed at promoting connection, creativity, and self-reflection. The evening began with “Circle of Questions,” an engaging icebreaker where students paired up and rotated through thoughtful prompts, encouraging meaningful dialogue and building class bonds. The group then transitioned to the Advisor Panel, where faculty shared personal insights about their senior year experiences and offered advice on navigating the college application process.

Next, students tackled the Marsh-

mallow Challenge, a hands-on team-building competition to build the tallest freestanding structure using spaghetti, string, tape, and a marshmallow. This lighthearted but challenging activity encouraged collaboration, quick thinking, and problem-solving.

Later in the evening, the group turned inward with the Letter to Your Future Self activity, reflecting on their goals, dreams, and personal challenges for the year ahead. Many also included drawings of their spirit animals, adding a creative, symbolic element to their reflections. These letters will be sealed and returned to them at the end of the school year. In small groups, some students shared highlights from their reflections and brainstormed ideas for the senior sweatshirt, eventually voting on a design to represent their class.

The retreat concluded with a full-group reflection and discussion, rounding out a night that balanced fun, purpose, and connection.

As the students made their way back to campus under a clear sky full of stars, it was evident that the Class of 2026 had grown closer and more grounded in their shared vision for a meaningful and successful final year at Storm King.

Winter Music Recital The Winter Music Recital brought warmth and community spirit to the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre, showcasing the talent and dedication of students across solo, ensemble, and chorus performances. Highlights included expressive piano and electric bass solos by Jialin Wang ’28, Andy Chen ’26, and Otis Berger ’28; vibrant Storm King Band renditions of Mac DeMarco’s “Freaking Out the Neighborhood” and Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So”; and a diverse lineup of vocal solos from Kaitlyn Machado ’27, Evie Tonry ’29, Rebecca Hartman ’28, Elijah Fingerman ’27, Santiago Solis Orona ’26, Brandon Melendez ’29, and Kira Smith ’28, culminating in a full chorus performance of “Die With a Smile.” Guided by Music Director Paul Connors, instructors Gabriela Mikova-Johnson, Dave Kain, Jon Doty, and supported by Theater Technical Director Eliza Brown and her crew, the recital celebrated both artistic excellence and the SKS community, offering a joyful, unifying start to the winter season.

Winter Dance Recital The holiday season came to life at The Winter Dance Recital at the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre, featuring 20 high-energy performances by Jeanette Jacobson’s talented dance students. The show highlighted a mix of contemporary solos, group numbers, and cultural pieces, including “Smooth Criminal,” “Lean on Me,” “Footloose,” Mila Kopolovich ’30’s “You Say,” Milana Rivera ’28’s “These Boots Are Made for Walking,” and “Going with God’s Flow” and “Youth Practice Manual.” Mrs. Jacobson praised her students’ skill and dedication, noting the strong contributions of first-time performers and 8th graders in solos and duets. The recital concluded with festive numbers “I Want to Be a Rockette” and “Oh Santa!” Technical Director Eliza Brown, the stage crew, and Eric Wang ’27’s lighting work ensured a seamless production, making the evening a joyful celebration of student artistry and the Storm King community.

REACHING NEW “HEIGHTS” From the first beats of the opening number to the final bow, the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre stage came alive as Storm King School students delivered three vibrant performances of In the Heights. Filled with colorful choreography, powerful vocals, and energetic Latin and hip-hop rhythms, the production captured the spirit of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s beloved musical and transported audiences to the lively streets of Washington Heights.

The story centers on Usnavi, a Dominican American bodega owner who dreams of returning to the Dominican Republic after the death of his parents.

Around him, friends and neighbors face challenges of their own—saving for new opportunities, paying for college, and navigating a rapidly changing neighborhood. Through love, loss, and hope, the community comes together while dreaming about how a winning lottery ticket might change their lives.

Directed by Performing Arts Chair Anne Fulton with co-director Sarah Fulton ’09, the production required tremendous stamina from its cast. Students blended rap narration, Latin rhythms such as salsa and merengue, and rich vocal harmonies under the guidance of Music Director Paul Connors and Vocal Director Gabriela Mikova-Johnson. Dance instructor Jeanette Jacobson choreographed lively mambo, salsa, hip-hop, and lyrical numbers that demanded students sing, act, and dance simultaneously.

Audiences of students, families, faculty, and community supporters responded with standing ovations, praising the cast’s energy and talent. With the support of Technical Director Eliza Brown and the stage and lighting crews, the performers and production team created an unforgettable celebration of community, culture, and talent.

FALL 2025 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS A

s the 2025–2026 academic year unfolded, athletics at The Storm King School continued to showcase sportsmanship, growth, and Cougar pride. From challenging fall schedules on the soccer pitch and volleyball court to grueling performances on the cross country trails, Storm King student-athletes demonstrated SKS sportsmanship in every arena.

Cross Country: Depth and Division Success The fall cross country team was the largest in recent memory, with 27 runners under Coaches Alex Finn-Atkins and Jennifer Boerke. Their depth translated into another strong season for the program.

The Cougars opened with competitive finishes at the Mount Academy Invitational and continued strong at Oakwood Friends School. At the Oakwood Friends Invitational, the boys captured their first team victory, led

by Peter Regenauer ’27 and Armani Checo ’26 in top-six finishes. The girls placed second overall, with standout performances from Liz Ukejianya ’26 and Ava OttavianoScaturro ’26.

At the annual Storm King Invitational, the boys claimed first place as a team while the girls placed four runners in the top 10. The season concluded with the HVAL Championships at Oakwood. The boys earned third place overall, with every runner setting a personal record.

Armani led the team with a third-place finish, followed closely by Eric Wang ’27 and Antonio Martell ’26. The girls posted personal bests across the board, just shy of the minimum to form a scoring team. Across every meet, Storm King runners combined skill and perseverance to define a season of growth and achievement.

Girls Varsity Soccer: Perseverance Girls Varsity Soccer faced a challenging schedule, beginning with heavy losses to Watkinson and Darrow, but continued to fight through each game. October included a hard-fought 2–2 draw against Westover and competitive matches against EF Academy and Harvey. The team closed the season with strong offensive efforts, even in losses, embodying Cougar resilience and grit.

Boys Varsity Soccer: Wins and Challenges Boys Varsity Soccer faced a demanding schedule but displayed resilience and leadership throughout the fall. Captains Sam Liu ’26, Ren Tamagawa ’26, Luis Gruesshaber ’26, and Logan Koo ’27 anchored the squad, while goalkeeper Clay Zheng ’26 and leading scorer Tayo Adeola ’26 delivered standout performances.

The team opened the season with losses to Thrive and Mount Academy, but bounced back with a 7–0 win over Marvelwood on September 17. A 3–1 victory over Wooster on September 20 marked a historic achievement—the program’s first win against that school in 11 years.

October tested the Cougars with tough matchups against EF Academy, Darrow, and West Point. They secured key victories, including a 3–1 win at King School and a 7–0 triumph over Marvelwood, but also endured several narrow losses, including a 4–3 home defeat to EF Academy and a 3–5 road loss at Oakwood Friends. Despite the challenges, the team finished the fall season strong, demonstrating growth, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

Girls Varsity Volleyball: Growth and Grit Girls Varsity Volleyball experienced a rebuilding year but maintained focus and teamwork throughout the fall. Despite losses to programs including Westover, EF Academy, Marvelwood, Kent, and Harvey, the Cougars continued to develop their cohesion and skill on the court. Coach Cervantes praised their heart and persistence, noting that the team’s energy and positivity never wavered.

Acts of Service and Kindness Highlight MLK Day

D

espite snow and cold temperatures, the Storm King School community came together to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through service, reflection, and learning. On Monday, January 19, 2026, students and faculty commemorated MLK Day with a full day of activities and hands-on service projects that embodied the spirit of Dr. King’s enduring legacy.

The morning began at an All School Meeting where Head of School Lisa Shambaugh kicked off the day with a reading from Dr. King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. “As you engage in your acts of service today, and as you learn more about Dr. King and others who led the Civil Rights Movement, I hope you’ll reflect on his words, and how they resonate with events in this country and around the world, even today.”

Building on Ms. Shambaugh’s remarks, The Storm King School’s Black Student Union (BSU) led the remainder of the morning program. Students, parents, faculty, and staff heard student presentations highlighting influential Black figures, experienced impactful speeches and poetry, and watched videos focused on the American Civil Rights Movement. These reflections on history and activism underscored the continued relevance of Dr. King’s work and sparked thoughtful conversations which carried on throughout the day.

Following the meeting, students enjoyed donuts and sweet

treats provided by the SKS Parents Association. For the remainder of the day, students and faculty participated in learning sessions and volunteered for service activities both on and off campus. On campus, groups cleaned and organized shared spaces, including the Art Center and Theatre.

Off campus, students assisted with organizing supplies at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, sorted food at the Hudson Valley Regional Food Bank, and lent helping hands at La Iglesia El Buen Pastor soup kitchen. Others removed invasive species at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum, helped clean up Donahue Park in Cornwall, refreshed painted walls at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Newburgh, and spent time visiting residents at the Sapphire Nursing Home.

In the gymnasium, the New York Blood Center Blood Drive saw an impressive turnout, with donors braving the weather to support this life-saving effort. The spirit of service extended even further as students created scores of handwritten cards for various organizations in support of cancer patients, residents of mental health facilities, and first responders. Together, these acts of kindness reflected the true purpose of the day.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this year’s MLK Day of Service so impactful. By lending their time and effort, the Storm King School community honored Dr. King’s vision and showed that even small acts of service can have a lasting and meaningful impact.

Luis Gruesshaber ’26 brings a global perspective, entrepreneurial spirit, and boundless curiosity to The Storm King School community. Originally from Germany, Luis has spent the past two years immersing himself in academics, athletics, and enterprising projects, always seeking something new to learn or create.

Q: Please tell us about your background.

“I’m from Munich, Germany, and I came to Storm King two years ago. I’ve always been interested in studying abroad, especially in the U.S. and New York. My passions include capital markets, entrepreneurship, international relations, finance, the stock market, economics, and Formula 1! I’m very extroverted, enjoy talking to people, and I’m always working on some new project.”

Q: How did you come to The Storm King School?

“I found Storm King through an agency in Germany. What stood out to me was the combination of strong academics, the variety of activities offered, and the location: it’s beautiful, quiet, yet still close to the city. I loved that new classes are added every year, like Startups, Sustainability, and Stewardship.

The international community, campus, and overall opportunities really made Storm King feel like the right choice.”

Q: What has your experience at SKS been like? What challenges have you faced?

“The biggest initial challenge was navigating AP coursework in a second language while contributing to class discussions, but I adapted much faster than I expected. I’ve also realized that I’m happiest when I’m constantly busy - I don’t like having free time! What’s made a difference is the support and enthusiasm I’ve received for every new project I’ve started. Teachers are always encouraging, and the community really celebrates creativity and effort.”

Q: What are your goals for the future? Where do you think you'll be?

“I plan to pursue undergraduate studies in Business, Finance, or Economics in Europe, return to the U.S. for a Master’s degree, work on Wall Street, or join a startup, and eventually start my own company. I want to keep building skills, connections, and experiences that prepare me for the challenges ahead.”

Q: What would you say looking back at your time at SKS? “I’ve had the best support from every teacher, all the time. Meaningful discussions with Mr. Siddiqui, in and out of class, have been particularly impactful. I’ve made friends from all over the world and loved sports seasons with Coach Bennett and Coach Feffer. Some of my favorite memories are simple ones, like late-night McDonald’s or Chinese food dinners in the dorm with friends like Masa, Yusei, JP, and Alvin - we did that all the time!”

Q: Can you picture a specific moment? Describe a favorite memory.

“One unforgettable moment was the semi-final HVAL soccer home game against EF Academy. The game had gone on so long, it was dark. We had alumni there, who had come to cheer us on and people had their car lights on, helping us to illuminate the field. It was an amazing atmosphere. We went into a shootout, and the energy was incredible. We ended up winning the game, and the roar of the cheers from the sidelines echoed off of the Mountain. Academically, presenting the EcoVision CarbonApp with Ethan to the school community stands out as well. We connected with companies across the U.S. and published the app - it was a truly exciting moment!”

Luis Gruesshaber ’26 exemplifies the curiosity, drive, and global perspective that define Storm King students. From Munich to the Hudson Valley, he has embraced every opportunity, leaving his mark on campus while preparing for a future filled with innovation and leadership.

FROM THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS TO THE BAHAMAS, STUDENTS STEPPED BEYOND THE CLASSROOM TO EXPLORE NEW CULTURES, SERVE COMMUNITIES, AND EXPERIENCE THE WORLD FIRSTHAND. International travel at The Storm King School gives students the opportunity to engage in meaningful community service abroad while also exploring new cultures, experiencing stunning landscapes, developing valuable skills, and creating memories that last a lifetime. During Thanksgiving Break 2025, students embraced these opportunities on two exciting trips: one to Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, and another on a Caribbean cruise to the Bahamas.

The Galápagos trip was full of early mornings, long travel days, and unforgettable experiences. After arriving in Ecuador, the group spent time near Quito at the Papallacta Hot Springs, enjoying the views and relaxing before their adventure truly began. The next day, they traveled to the Galápagos Islands, where they visited the Charles Darwin Research Center and saw the iconic giant tortoises up close.

According to the students, every day brought something new.

On Santa Fe Island, they snorkeled in crystal-clear waters that housed sea turtles, rays, colorful fish, and dolphins that swam beside the boat. “Swimming near the sea lions was something I’ll never forget,” Jiann Lee ’26 explained. On Isabela Island, the group snorkeled with reef sharks and observed flamingos in their natural habitat. The trip also included a hands-on conservation project, where students helped remove invasive plants from the beach to protect the areas where iguanas lay their eggs.

“I really enjoyed getting close to the wildlife and taking photos,” said Emmett Jaslow ’27.

“Learning to surf pushed me out of my comfort zone—and that ended up being the best part.”

Meanwhile, another group of students enjoyed a more relaxed pace on a Caribbean cruise. The trip began in Florida with kayaking in a scenic lagoon full of wildlife, before boarding the ship for a week at sea. Students made the most of the ship’s amenities, spending time in the teen lounge, playing volleyball and basketball, relaxing in pools and hot tubs, and competing in endless games of Uno. Group meals, including a Thanksgiving dinner and a closing-night dinner, provided chances to gather and celebrate together.

Port stops included Nassau, where students took a historical tour of the city, visiting landmarks like the Queen’s Staircase and a fortress, followed by time at the beach or exploring local shops. “It was fun to mix sightseeing with just hanging out on the beach and enjoying the ship,” explained Carla Manzaneque Marcos ’28.

Whether exploring the volcanic landscapes of the Galápagos or enjoying the easy flow of life at sea, both Thanksgiving Break trips offered students a chance to see new places, serve local communities, bond with classmates, and create lasting memories.

The incoming class of 125 boarding and 55 day students brought exceptional talent across academics, arts, and athletics to our Mountain campus. Our students come from 23 countries and 11 U.S. states.

Academic Excellence Drives Growth The School is experiencing unprecedented demand for advanced coursework, particularly in STEM fields. We enrolled a record number of students in advanced mathematics and science courses, reflecting both the caliber of

our incoming students and Storm King’s strengthened academic reputation. I look forward to the ribbon cutting of the new Academic Center next year, as the additional laboratory and classroom space will be essential to accommodate this growing cohort of future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.

At the same time, our visual and performing arts programs continue to expand with an influx of talented students. This balance between rigorous academics and creative expression—unusual for a school of our size—gives Storm King its distinctive educational character and competitive edge.

The diversity of student backgrounds, spanning multiple states and countries, enriches

classroom discussions and creates collaborative learning opportunities that extend well beyond traditional coursework.

As the semester continued, early arts showcases and athletic competitions continued to generate excitement across campus, with the energy of new collaborations and renewed friendships evident in classrooms, studios, and residence halls.

Institutional Momentum Builds Strategic investments in facilities and programming are clearly paying dividends in the admissions market. The combination of strong academics, robust arts offerings, and competitive athletics positions Storm King favorably among northeastern independent schools navigating demographic and economic headwinds.

Our ability to attract high-caliber students reflects not only institutional strengths but also the ongoing support of our alumni community, which provides the financial foundation necessary to sustain competitive programs and facilities.

This year, we have distributed $3.1M in financial aid assistance among our student body.

Traditions Anchor Community Each new year at Storm King carries with it a sense of continuity—a thread that links today’s students to those who came before them. Among the most enduring traditions is Mountain Day, first celebrated in 1932 when Headmaster Anson Barker gathered his students for a hike and picnic in Black Rock Forest. What began as a simple excursion has become a rite of passage, a day when the entire school pauses to climb the ridgeline together. This past fall, as we retraced that familiar path, we joined a tradition that has bound generations of Storm King students to the Mountain, to nature, and to one another.

Strong Foundation for Growth This year positions Storm King for significant achievements across all program areas. Our students arrive well prepared to excel in advanced coursework while contributing to a supportive community culture that encourages both individual success and collective growth.

The 158th year has considerable momentum, and I am confident this cohort will continue Storm King’s tradition of academic excellence while shaping the school’s future direction. Their achievements will reflect not only their own talents but also the strength of the educational foundation our community—including our dedicated alumni—continues to build and support.

New International Students Discover Washington, DC

E

ach year at The Storm King School, orientation for new international students plays an important role in helping young scholars from around the world settle into life on the Mountain. New International Student Orientation also offers students an exciting introduction to American culture, history, and traditions. For many of this year’s incoming students, it was their first time in New York—and in the United States.

After moving into their dorm rooms and getting to know the campus, the group, along with their dorm RAs, embarked on an exciting cultural trip to Washington, DC. The itinerary was filled with meaningful visits to some of the nation’s most iconic landmarks, historic institutions, and cultural experiences.

The journey began with stops at the Capitol Building, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court—giving students a firsthand look at the heart of the U.S. government. They then visited The White House from the outside, capturing memorable photos and learning about its significance in American history and leadership.

A visit to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum offered opportunities to engage with science and innovation, while the National Museum of African American History and Culture provided a deeper understanding of the country’s diverse cultural and social fabric.

The group also explored powerful memorials along the National Mall, including the Lincoln 46 / ON THE MOUNTAIN / Spring 2026

Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

A stop at Arlington National Cemetery and the nearby Marine Corps War Memorial added moments of reflection and respect for those who served.

Lighter moments were also part of the experience. Students enjoyed American fare at the popular Elephant & Castle restaurant and took time to relax and shop at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City. At the International Spy Museum, they had fun learning about intelligence work through interactive, hands-on exhibits. They also

visited the National Zoo, where they met the giant pandas and other exotic animals.

To top off the trip, the return journey included a thrilling visit to Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. After several days of walking and learning, students enjoyed rollercoasters, water rides, and midway games—creating even more memories before the start of classes.

For the students, the trip was a valuable introduction to American history—and to one another. It set the stage for friendship, cultural exchange, and a shared sense of

belonging in their new community. Kudos to all the faculty, staff, and Resident Assistants who made this year’s trip a success. Thanks to their efforts, our new international students began their academic year well-prepared and warmly welcomed.

ow in his 12th year at The Storm King School, Jim Bennett’s journey has been anything but one-dimensional. By day, he’s the Assistant Dean of Academics and a Geometry teacher. In the afternoons, a coach and dorm parent. When evening falls, he might trade the athletic field for the stage, performing in a school theater production.

In every role, Jim has poured himself into the SKS community. Over the years, his commitment has taken on a new form. Jim is a Storm King Steward, a lead faculty giver, recognized for giving faithfully for five or more consecutive years.

For Jim, the commitment to give comes back to the School's core values: "Truth, Respect, Responsibility." He sees his gifts not just as donations, but as a lasting way to live out the very principles he teaches every day." Working at Storm King, you see firsthand where the need is and how impactful every contribution can be," Jim explains. "It's about investing in the place that invests so much in our students."

Jim gives because he believes in the mission unfolding around him daily: the quiet breakthrough in a math class, the camaraderie of a team, the courage to step onto the stage. When asked what he hopes his giving accomplishes, Jim's answer is simple: "I want Storm King to continue being a place where every student feels seen, valued, and challenged to grow."

For Jim Bennett, giving isn't just about writing a check. It's about continuing to build the home he found 12 years ago–for the students of today and for generations of Storm King students yet to come.

2025 SKS Parents Association meeting

A Revitalized Parents Association Strengthens the Storm King Community

A

t The Storm King School, one of the most meaningful aspects of campus life is the strong partnership between families and the School. Over the past several years, that partnership has been reinvigorated through the renewed energy and leadership of the Parents Association, thanks in large part to Tasha Brown P' 25 and current co-leads Marco Smith P’28 and Stephanie Kraeutler P’29.

Under their leadership, the Parents Association has grown into a vibrant and engaged group that supports students, faculty, and the broader Storm King community. With consistent meeting attendance and a collaborative spirit, parents have contributed their time, ideas, and resources in ways that have enriched school life throughout the year.

One highlight of the Parents Association’s efforts came during Fall Family Weekend, when the group organized a scenic hike on Storm King Mountain. The hike gave families an opportunity to experience the beauty of campus together while connecting in a relaxed and welcoming setting—an example of the Association’s broader goal of helping parents feel connected to the School and to one another. Parents have also contributed to the warmth of campus traditions; on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, they helped make the day especially memorable by providing treats for the community, adding a thoughtful touch to a day dedicated to reflection and service.

The group has also shown strong enthusiasm for supporting major community events and student programs. At the School’s annual Trivia Night, Parents Association members were an energetic presence, helping build excitement while contributing generously. Their participation played a meaningful role in the evening’s success, which raised funds toward renovating the athletic locker rooms—an important project that will benefit current and future students alike. Their support has also extended to the performing arts, where parents encourage Storm King’s theater program by attending productions and spreading the word within the parent

This year, when Head of School Lisa Shambaugh, Assistant Head for Admissions and Marketing Marek Pramuka P’20, and Director of Development Sarah Fulton traveled to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Seoul, they were warmly welcomed by Storm King parents abroad. Families graciously hosted gatherings that brought together members of the Storm King community in each city, offering opportunities to reconnect, share updates from campus, and celebrate the School’s global reach.

Their generosity and hospitality reflected the deep pride families feel in being part of the Storm King community.

WHAT'S UP NEXT? Young Alumni Return to the Mountain

he Mountain buzzed with energy on January 15, 2026, as young alumni returned to campus for “What’s Up Next?”–a speaker series connecting students with familiar faces from just a few years past. Seven graduates from the past ten years spoke with our current students to reflect on the enduring connections shaped by a shared space.

Designed to bridge current students and recent alumni, “What’s Up Next?” fosters mentorship, conversation, and community across class years. The event highlights professional pathways, educational advancement, but also emphasizes the personal “I was just in your moments that shape alumni as they shoes—not knowing emerge from Storm King and into the what comes next, world. The evening began with a reception in the Smidt Conference Room, where alumni reconnected with faculty, former classmates, and campus spaces. Many took time to revisit old classrooms and celebrate new campus updates, including excitement surrounding the anticipated new Academic Center. Conversations about new possibilities, and timeless programs and places carried into dinner at Henderson Dining Hall, blending nostalgia with anticipation for what lies ahead.

To encourage meaningful engagement, alumni were paired with faculty members in related fields and seated alongside students who had expressed interest in similar areas of study. This format created space for focused, individual conversations and ensured that every junior and senior had the opportunity to create meaningful connections with alumni. Students and alumni then gathered in Ogden Hall for the panel discussion. Jordan Golding opened the evening by reflecting on how recently he had been in the students’ position, navigating the uncertainty of what comes next. He spoke to the unique tension of standing on the edge of adulthood, filled with both fear and possibility, and the enduring comfort he found in our shared community.

Alumni speakers shared personal stories of challenge and growth, highlighting how Storm King continued to shape their paths long after graduation. Asia Raacke ’19 spoke about finding clarity and confidence through her connection to Storm King, recalling how returning for a hike on Honey Hill inspired her law school personal statement. Seth Vieira ’22 shared how the community supported him through personal loss, affirming his faith and guiding his vocational calling, while Shayla Lawrence ’21 reflected on learning to trust uncertainty and see rejection as redirection. The evening concluded with small-group conversations where students and alumni engaged in deeper conversation and exchanged information for further connection. Juliana Diniz ’27 spoke excitedly with Sagan Novesky about Vassar’s campus and course catalog, while Milana Rivera ’28 sought out alums Sofia Bové and Asia Raacke to discuss their experiences working internationally in law and politics.

For a single evening, our young alumni become students of the mountain once again. Connecting with the next generation of alumni and the friends they once saw daily, our alumni welcome the opportunity to learn from one another, no matter the age, time, or distance. The event was a celebration of the threads that weave our student community together, connecting past, present, and future.

A Day at the Museum: Students Explore the Art Business

A

group of Storm King School students participated in a two-day Museum Studies Workshop at Magazzino Italian Art recently, developed by the museum’s Director of Research and Education, Nicola Lucchi, and SKS Visual Arts Department Chair John Carruthers. Together, they created an immersive program that gave students a look into the professional world of running a contemporary art museum. The collaboration was made possible by Storm King Trustee Richard Grossman ’79, whose annual support enriches the School’s art-related programming.

Students who participated included Jiann Lee ’26, Sam Liu ’26, and Ryder Henricksen ’26, who attended both days; Faisal Alsaidury ’26, Ren Tamagawa ’26, Owen Goodwin ’28, and Jerry Cao ’26, who participated on Friday; and Jaewon Kim ’27, who joined on Saturday.

The workshop opened with a tour of Magazzino’s permanent collection led by Chief Docent Greg Slick, who encouraged students to consider

how museums communicate complex artistic movements. “We learned about nonprofit sustainability and how museums generate income,” Jiann reflected. “One activity had us paraphrase artwork descriptions for a child, which was a great way to think about communicating art. Meeting the architect and building a model of a gallery room was especially memorable.”

Architect Miguel Quismondo, AIA, then guided students through the design of the museum building itself, highlighting materials, lighting, and spatial flow. Behind the scenes, Thomas Huber, Head

Preparator and Art Handler, explained the careful planning required to conserve, store, and install artworks. Students applied these lessons by designing their own scale-model exhibitions, considering visitor pathways, lighting, and spatial storytelling.

The following morning in Magazzino’s Research Library, students were introduced to museum operations and nonprofit governance, using real financial documents to examine budgeting, fundraising, and sustainability. Jaewon noted, “I learned how the museum operates, how the board appoints the director, and how nonprofit finances are managed. Looking up Form 990s showed me the full financial picture.”

Students were also guided through curatorial planning, and Store Manager Marie-Louise Petitpierre demonstrated how branding, merchandising, and licensing reinforce a museum’s mission. “The ‘make your own nonprofit’ workshop gave me a clear sense of how nonprofit logistics work,” shared Sam. “I even applied it to create a nonprofit for my SKS Tea Club.”

The workshop concluded with student presentations of their own museum or nonprofit concepts, including missions, budgets, branding plans, and inaugural exhibitions. For Mr. Carruthers, the workshop was a “big hit, and an amazing experience for our students. Engaging directly with museum professionals and hands-on projects gave students insight into the diverse careers that support the cultural sector—opportunities many had never considered. It was real professional development,” he commented.

TRIVIA NIGHT Highlights Parents Weekend with Fun and Fundraising

A

dding to the excitement of Fall Family Weekend, this year’s Trivia Night fundraiser was a tremendous success. On October 18, more than 125 families, alumni, and friends of The Storm King School gathered in Henderson Dining Hall for an evening of competition and camaraderie. Thanks to the community’s enthusiasm and generosity, the event raised more than $17,000 to support the renovation of the school’s gym locker rooms.

Now approaching its fifth year, Trivia Night has become a beloved Storm King tradition and an important fundraiser supporting improvements to campus facilities. This year’s focus—renovating the gym locker rooms—resonated strongly with the school community.

The evening featured lively trivia competition among teams from across the Storm King community, including faculty, staff, students, parents, and friends, with plenty of laughter and a spirit of healthy rivalry. In the end, the winning title went to The Nerds, a team of Storm King parents who earned bragging rights for the year.

The event’s success was made possible thanks to the generous support of this year’s sponsors. Diamond sponsors included the Tang Family and the Vaccaro Family.

Holds Productive Fall Retreat, Charts Course for the Year Ahead

T

he Storm King School Board of Trustees convened for its second fall retreat and regular meeting, gathering both in person and virtually to reflect on a successful year and set priorities for the months ahead. There’s a lot of positive momentum at Storm King, as the School is embracing an exciting new theme for the year—Connection—while gearing up for major progress on the new Academic Building.

Enrollment is thriving, with the admissions cycle being the most selective in recent years, fueled by record inquiries and applications. The boarding community remains vibrant, representing numerous countries. To build on this, a major marketing push is underway, including a fresh viewbook, added social media presence, and a website refresh.

On the financial side, the School ended the fiscal year with an operating surplus, allowing for continued investment in campus stewardship and future initiatives. Meanwhile, alumni engagement is strengthening with new council members, expanded events, and a growing professional network presence.

With strong governance, a unified vision, and a focus on strategic growth, the Board is heading into the year energized and fully aligned to support the School’s exciting path forward.

Engaging a Global Community, One Gathering at a Time

F

rom bustling international cities to cozy alumni reunions closer to home, The Storm King School’s “SKS on the Road” series has become a powerful expression of what makes the school community so enduring: connection. Since the fall 2025 semester began, school leadership has traveled thousands of miles to meet with families and alumni, reinforcing relationships that extend far beyond the Mountain.

In October, Head of School Lisa Shambaugh, Assistant Head of School for Admissions and Marketing Marek Pramuka P’20, and Director of Development Sarah Fulton ’09 traveled extensively—from Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Seoul to Boston, San Francisco, Atlanta, and West Palm Beach—to engage directly with parents and alumni. These gatherings have provided valuable opportunities to share updates on school initiatives, strengthen partnerships with current families, and celebrate the enduring connections that define the Storm King experience.

The spirit of connection continued in November with a vibrant alumni gathering in Boston, Massachusetts. Hosted by Sarah Fulton ’09 and Associate Head of School Dr. Tim Lance, the evening brought together graduates from multiple generations, including Tom Delaney ’58, Bob Cory ’63, Tom Leeds ’69, Sophie Drewes ’23, and Brad Nguyen ’25. As winter arrived, SKS on the Road carried that momentum to the West Coast. In San Francisco, Ms. Shambaugh joined alumni Jay Schumann ’71 and his wife Kelly, along with Nader Fathi ’77, for an intimate and engaging dinner. The evening was marked by thoughtful conversation, shared stories, and reflections on both the School’s history and its future.

The next stop in Atlanta brought together a lively group of alumni at The Steamhouse Lounge, welcoming guests including Chad Merrill ’84 and his wife Robin, Trustee Chris DeSalvo ’85, Trustee Ken Goldwasser ’78 and his wife Randi Layne, and Vallea Woodbury ’95. The evening’s relaxed atmosphere encouraged conversation, reflection, and a shared appreciation for the lasting impact of a Storm King education.

The journey concluded in West Palm Beach, where Trustee Peter Fox ’77 and his wife Mary Fox hosted a scenic walking tour, followed by a well-attended gathering at Lynora’s. John Garrett ’63: After a business career of more than four decades, John is spending his retirement years working to advance sustainability as chairman of the up-and-coming company Everyone’s Earth. Garrett and his colleagues are creating sustainable solutions to single-use, plastic household products such as diapers, dryer sheets, feminine care products and wipes.

Working with Everyone’s Earth has made Garrett more aware of the extent of the environmental costs of plastic use. “For a long time, I was ignorant about it. I had too many things going on: raising a family, trying to be successful professionally, exercise and having some fun and all those other things that are important,” he says. “And plastic is easy to use. But as I’ve learned more, I’ve become aware that the path we’re on with our consumption of plastic and its manufacturing ramifications is not sustainable.” In April, 100% high-performance cotton biodegradable baby diapers and wipes will be launched, using the brand Change. Written on the front of each diaper will be, “Change me, Change the World.”

These offerings will reduce our consumption and dependence on plastic products, which cause permanent damage to our environment during their manufacturing process, plus they never biodegrade. John served as Storm King's commencement speaker in 2025.

George Klein ’73: Currently residing in New Jersey, George recently went on a wonderful trip with his family to celebrate his 45th wedding anniversary and 70th birthday on a Disney Alaskan Cruise.

He writes, “It was my first time in Alaska. We saw plenty 60 / ON THE MOUNTAIN / Spring 2026

of bald eagles, hundreds of thousands of salmon, and gorgeous landscapes!”

He states that he’s been, “Fortunate to retire at age 50 while still having two kids attending a private university, Loyola of Maryland. Life is and has been kind to me. I’ve been blessed with four wonderful grandchildren. My personal health goal is to log on my Fitbit over 5,200,000 (last year logged 5,872,543 including down time for new right hip replacement). This was accomplished by volunteering as a docent at Turtle Back Zoo, officiating high school and travel soccer and doubles tennis and subbing as a school crossing guard.”

Jenna Esposito ’96: As of late, Jenna Esposito ’96 released her 5th solo album, Sixties Chicks, in November 2025, which pays tribute to the female vocalists of the 1960s. She writes,

“I celebrated with a CD release show at The Cutting Room in NYC, which was a lot of fun! I also released an original single, ‘Just In Time For Valentine's’ on February 5th of this year. I co-wrote the song with my father (who is also my musical director, and taught chorus at SKS in the 90s) Fortune Esposito, and had the opportunity to travel to Sicily last June as a vocalist with Philadelphia's renowned City Rhythm Orchestra, for a 10-day concert tour!”

Sanford Worth ’02 and his wife Courtney Worth

Sanford Worth ’02: After graduating from SKS in 2002, Sanford has become a writer, director, and producer with over a decade of experience across film, TV, and branded content. Currently on the Lionsgate Digital team, his path here was anything but linear, starting in the military, transitioning into music, and eventually landing in film (a story best told over coffee).

Sanford has always built his life around storytelling in all its forms (some things never change). These days, he is based in Phoenix, Arizona, with his wife and very opinionated dogs, writing scripts and painting in his studio.

I am loving this new career advancement, and learning new skills every day administratively!

I got married in April 2023 to my wonderful husband Jonathan. I brought him about two or three years ago to show him SKS and my high school days. I was emotionally teary-eyed because I loved my time on the Mountain. I currently reside in Bloomfield, New Jersey about a mile from downtown Montclair, New Jersey. I miss and love my days of living on the mountain. Shoutout to the high school graduating class of 2011. I hope they are all doing well!”

Holly Peach ’19 wrote: “Since leaving Storm King, I have experienced so much change! I decided to start a career in Human Resource Management, and now I am the Operations Director of a non profit in Washington state! I moved there in 2021, but I am currently back in New York for a few months to allow my parents to spend time with their grandson!”

Elana Klyde Kleeman ’11: After graduating from SKS, Elana wrote “I spent my first two years of college at Roger Williams university in lovely New England, and ended up transferring to Towson university where I got my BS in family Science graduating in the spring of 2016.

I spent about 10 years working at Starbucks/hotel industry post graduating from Towson university in spring 2016.
