INSIGHTS Summer 2024_ENG

Recently, Mike Holland was inducted into the Texas A&M Constructors Hall of Fame. This is an incredible acknowledgment of Mike’s dedication to our industry and people, which he calls ‘our strength from within!”

Mike’s dedication to the safety of our workers was one of many factors the judges considered when deciding to award him the prize. And I know Mike would tell you that safety is number one in his book!

Mike and I met 54 years ago when, at age 16, he began pumping gas and loading trucks at our fledgling company. He was a neighborhood boy, attending Waltrip High School and trying to make a few extra dollars. Having been involved with the Boy Scouts for years, he worked on his Eagle Scout project and showed the leadership and values that made him who he is today.

Mike’s dad was a tough Marine Corps Sergeant major who had seen combat in the Korean War and had experiences that he never shared. His unit experienced almost 60% casualties in Korea. He was a tough taskmaster, and I’m sure he helped Mike understand the value of hard work.

Mike tried college, but it was not to his liking. He wanted to stay in construction, so he joined the carpenter’s local union and worked as a journeyman on our commercial jobs after his apprenticeship at school. Mike learned his trade from the ground up, and his field experience set him apart from many in our industry.

I had the honor to work with Mike, side by side, in those early days when we were a much smaller company. Little did we realize that as Houston boomed, so would we. We went from doing small office/warehouse buildings to working on 50-story structures that became the norm for downtown Houston. We were union carpenters and knew what it was like to be a working man. Our workforce grew from under a hundred craftsmen to over 1000 by the early 1980’s.

Looking back, I don’t know how we did it. But it would have never happened without Mike’s leadership and dedication.

The journey to where we are today was not easy. The economy had many ups and downs, requiring true grit and some lucky breaks. But I have to give Mike

MESSAGE FROM STAN

credit for building our team today. He has excellent insight into people; once they are on the team, he is their champion, and they know it. He is a natural leader with whom people respect and like to work.

I was honored to nominate Mike to this prestigious Hall of Fame. He possesses all the qualities expected of this award: integrity, diligence, dedication to our industry, appreciation for the craft workers, and so on. His compassion for our field workers is priority number one as a tradesman. Mike explains that they are our strength from within, a term he coined a few years ago.

Mike has been a champion of safety at MAREK and a leader at the Associated General Contractors (AGC) and Association Builders and Contractors Greater Houston (ABC), encouraging others to adopt safety standards to protect workers. He understands, more than most, that our workforce is our greatest asset, and that does not happen by accident. Investing in our skilled workers is the smartest thing any of us can do, and Mike does all he can to make that a priority for our industry.

Some of Mike’s industry duties include terms as former board chair of the Construction Career Collaborative, Co-chair of the Construction Sector Council for the UpSkill initiative of the Greater Houston Partnership, Associated Subcontractors Association past board chair, Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston past board chair, and Associated General Contractors past board member. In his spare time, for the past several years he served as board chair of the Covenant House Texas, where they launched, and completed a $50+ million capital campaign to build a residential facility to support homeless youth in our community.

I could spend more time discussing Mike’s many industry achievements. But I don’t want to forget to acknowledge his devotion to his family. Even though Mike didn’t attend A&M, his family abounds with them.

His wife, Susan, son Kyle, and daughter, April, are all Aggies and bleed Maroon. His son Tyler also bleeds Maroon, but it’s a different kind. Harvard calls it Crimson. But he’s an Aggie at heart.

Mike is all about family; I’m so proud to have been part of that family for over 54 years. Congratulations, Mike!

SAN ANTONIO STATE HOSPITAL REBUILDING HOPE

After over a century of service, the San Antonio State Hospital is undergoing a remarkable transformation into a state-ofthe-art facility designed to offer patients a healing environment focused on hope, recovery, and compassionate care. This historic project not only revitalizes the hospital but also marks a new chapter in its legacy of service. MAREK played an essential role in bringing this vision to life, partnering with Vaughn Construction to complete the intricate installation of drywall, ceilings, and doors throughout the new facility. At the heart of MAREK’s success on this project were the on-site field teams, led by Field Leader Jesus Paz, whose unwavering commitment to quality and excellence set the standard for the entire build. Their dedication ensured that every wall, ceiling, and finish met the highest level of craftsmanship.

One standout achievement was MAREK’s installation of the complex café ceiling in Building Four. This design challenge featured four distinct terraced heights, combined with circular elements that had to be framed at multiple elevations. It took 21 days for the MAREK team to prefabricate and install this demanding structure with precision, utilizing cuttingedge materials like flex track and metal studs.

From early stages, MAREK was actively involved, attending weekly BIM coordination meetings alongside MEP contractors to guarantee the project’s progression.

Jacob Luna, Vaughn’s on-site Project Manager, praised MAREK’s approach: “Watching the ceiling installation was awe-inspiring. Seeing it engineered on the floor before being framed above was impressive. MAREK’s involvement in the planning stage made all the difference.”

MAREK’s team demonstrated exceptional coordination when it came to the installation of doors and drywall, particularly as the project schedule required adjustments. When the doors arrived later than expected, MAREK’s Craft Talent Development team stepped up, assigning dedicated team members to oversee each stage of the door and drywall installation. These members tracked progress, conducted inspections, and reported daily on the tasks completed. This thorough approach ensured that the door installations were executed with precision, while maintaining the high-quality standards expected throughout the entire project. By focusing on both timing and quality control, the team successfully adapted to the

evolving needs of the build without compromising on excellence.

The contributions of each and every team member throughout the hospital not only ensured the project’s success but also enhanced the overall atmosphere of the space. Their craftsmanship has helped create a warm, welcoming environment that fosters peace and healing for patients and their families—leaving a lasting impact on the hospital’s legacy for years to come.

The Atlanta branch has had a busy year so far with excellent results enrolling new candidates in the program. We are currently involved in teaching our drywall curriculum in two high schools, as a result we were able to hire three graduates, one from Marietta and two from Berkmar High School. These graduates have attended one of the five boot camps that have conducted this year. We also had the privilege to participate in “The Summer Youth Program” developed by Atlanta Mayor, Andre Dickens. The program offers opportunities and fostering for professional growth to high school students, college students, and recent graduates in the community. As a result of MAREK’s participation, we were asked to teach our drywall curriculum at their facility.

In addition to the boot camps, our team was able to participate in the SkillsUSA TECHSPO 2024 event at the Georgia World Congress Center early this summer that had close to 18,000 in attendance. This is an event where students from each state compete in various skills including carpentry at the National level and MAREK could recruit and share what an amazing career path we can offer. We were able to participate in making a: How to Install Drywall video for NCCER, which will be completed before the end of the year. This video will be added to the many other videos NCCER has made for teaching and training new employees entering the construction world.

With half the year gone there is no slowing down for the remaining of the year, there is much more planning and classes to be held.

We will never stop giving our hearts, mind, and soul to the development of our new employees in helping them to develop a career with the MAREK Family.

Austin | Craft Training Supervisor Ed Cheney

Our commitment to nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals is evident, with eight graduates—six from Houston ISD and two from Texas City ISD—joining the MAREK family full-time.

Welcome to the team!

San Antonio | Superintendent Gabriel Garcia

On May 29th, Northside Independent School District (NISD) and MAREK joined forces for an unforgettable Construction Signing Day, marking a significant step toward building the future of the skilled trades. This exciting event was about more than just a celebration—it was an opportunity for young men and women to take their first official steps into rewarding careers in the construction industry.

We’re proud to announce that, through this event, MAREK welcomed eight graduating students to our team as new hires, ready to begin their journey in the field. Additionally, four students received MAREK-paid internships, giving them hands-on experience and a chance to explore further the exciting opportunities our industry offers.

Construction Signing Day is not just a ceremony. It’s a launchpad for these talented young individuals to dive into careers filled with growth, development, and endless potential. At MAREK, we are passionate about investing in the next generation of skilled tradespeople, and this event exemplifies our commitment to providing opportunities that open doors to meaningful careers.

TERMINAL TRIUMPH CRAFTING THE FUTURE OF AIR TRAVEL

The renovation of the Mickey Leland International Terminal (MLIT) at George Bush Intercontinental Airport was far from an ordinary project — it was a groundbreaking effort that redefined what’s possible in airport construction. Led by MAREK’s outstanding field teams, this massive undertaking showcased our unparalleled craftsmanship and teamwork, leaving a lasting impression on one of Houston’s most iconic travel hubs.

At the heart of the project is the stunning 17,400-squarefoot custom copper ceiling, a centerpiece designed to reflect Houston’s iconic live oak trees. Under the supervision of Field Leaders John Capps, Rafael Guevara, Production Manager Roland Mercier and MAREK’s skilled craftsmen and women turned a vision into a reality, installing over 22,000 elliptical tabs that give the terminal its distinctive look. Each tab was meticulously adjusted to capture the perfect angle, a time-consuming process that began at 15 minutes per panel but was soon optimized thanks to the team’s relentless dedication and ingenuity.

The custom grid was attached to the ceiling deck using ceiling wire, and MAREK’s 12-person crew worked from scissor lifts to install the panels at a height of approximately 23 feet above the terrazzo floor. Coordinating the schedule was one of Roland Mercier’s biggest challenges, as there were about 60 different trades on site, including drywall, fireproofing, finishing, paint, and acoustical ceiling teams.

“The logistics were pretty complex,” he explained. “We boomed the panels into the building from the tarmac, and with limited lay down space, we had to ensure we had the correct crate at the right time. Our warehouse team meticulously checked the crates to verify their contents met our requirements.”

The work didn’t stop there. The ceiling’s ellipse shapes were nothing short of complex, requiring the installation of 30 baffles—a process that, through the use of

prefabricated templates and precise angles, shaved 50% off the time typically required. It’s this kind of innovation that made this project truly exceptional.

Safety and production were carefully planned and prioritized throughout the project. Safety Advisor Carlos Rivas and his team ensured that every task met the highest standards, maintaining a seamless balance between productivity and safety. Despite the challenges of working in an active airport terminal, the team successfully kept the project moving forward without disrupting airport operations.

This transformation wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership and coordination of various MAREK teams. Drywall PM Randy Wakefield and Field Supervisor Leslie Utzman played pivotal roles in the drywall installation, while Acoustical PM Davis Sprague and Field Supervisor John Capps led the acoustical work that brought the ceiling’s vision to life. Paint PM Obed Munoz and Field Supervisor Saul Garza added the final touches with exceptional precision, delivering a finished product that stands as a testament to MAREK’s quality and craftsmanship.

Travelers now stop in their tracks to marvel at the beauty of the new terminal, snapping photos of a design that has truly transformed the space into an architectural landmark. The MLIT project exemplifies MAREK’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and safety—values that we’re proud to embody.
