INSIGHTS SPRING 2022 EDITION

A QUARTERLY PUBLICATION OF THE MAREK FAMILY OF COMPANIES

MAJOR PROJECTS ATLANTA Things continue to go well at the $22 million Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) North Druid Hills Replacement Hospital we are building for Brasfield & Gorrie in Atlanta. We currently have crews working simultaneously on floors 4 -15 led by Superintendent Tony Smith; our Foremen team of Ismael Bravo, Juan Lopez, Jack Smith, Andres Diaz, Martin Martinez, and Thomas Archivy; our Finishing Foremen, Deny Carrillo and Ismael Grimaldo; our Safety Advisors, Brian Smith and Danny Williams; our Logistics leader, Don Hicke; Project Admin, Kristen Bankston and on-site Project Managers, Marty Shonkwiler and Brian Skinner. Luke Schlup, Brasfield & Gorrie’s Superintendent, and his leadership team have made it a pleasure to build Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s new one-billion-dollar facility. It takes a solid team to build a project this large and complicated. It also takes a strong General Contractor to manage over 80 subcontractors and nearly 2,000 workers on the job site. Luke told us recently, “The MSI/Marek team gets

it… there is more to construction than just labor, materials, and money. It takes teamwork and an understanding of developing relationships. Some key parts of relationships are showing care, open communication, and TRUST. Tony, Marty, and their team exemplify and live this out daily on the job site. It’s a recipe for long-lasting relationships and repeat business.” While we still have a long way to wrap up the CHOA NDH Replacement Hospital, we continue to work together to make it a success for both us and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The architect on file is Earl Swensson Associates. AUSTIN Kyle Public Safety will be a 60,000 sf building that will house the Kyle Police Station and Forensics Department for the City of Kyle—designed to mimic a facility in Belfast, Ireland, with a grand architectural entrance. The project began in March of this year, with a projected end Page 1

MESSAGE FROM

STAN

It’s hard to believe that 2022 is almost half done! We’re off to a good start with plenty of work but also challenges from material prices and finding and keeping skilled labor. Challenges that we have seen before! Challenges that make our teams stronger! Many of you have followed my immigration efforts through the years. It’s been a long fight with little to show for it. It has truly become a political issue that only we the voters can impact in the long run.

SAN ANTONIO On March 31st, MAREK San Antonio hosted a Customer Appreciation Event. A crawfish boil, live band and entertainment made for an excellent evening of fun, networking with all our local General Contractors.

Towards that effort, several years ago we joined forces with the Rational Middle, the Center for Houston’s Future, and Rice’s Baker Institute Center for Mexican Studies, to produce YouTube videos and Podcasts that educate and empower voters on immigration issues. What we call Season One, offered 12 Videos and over 120 Podcasts, all of which can be accessed by Googling rational middle immigration. To date the site has had almost five million views. Less that we’d hoped, but still more opportunity to come.

HOUSTON A first for the Houston branch, the team was awarded the Associated Builders and Contractors Excellence in Construction 2022 Eagle Award for their work on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Kinder Building. This award honors the nation’s most innovative and high-quality construction projects. Congratulations to the entire Houston team involved on the MFAH project!

As a result of findings from Season One, we learned that two concepts resonated with viewers. That being DACA and ID and Tax. Two common sense solutions that the majority of Americans support. Please take the time to watch the short introductory video at State of Play: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ntMr_fF8sfs

ATLANTA The Atlanta MAREK branch has won the 2022 AGC Build Georgia Award for our outstanding work on the Microsoft Project. Congratulations to Derek Marzak (PM), Bill Pallino (Superintendent) and to all our crews whose hard work on the project led to this recognition!

Also, four new videos were produced explaining the impact of 11 million plus undocumented on Education, Business, Healthcare, and Law Enforcement. All offer the opinions of experts in their fields on each of what we call our four pillars. Page 6

Education: https://youtu.be/dfuFbKRVUpg Business: https://youtu.be/LpX_EDjLMBA Healthcare: https://youtu.be/GX4RkIQWDRc Law enforcement: https://youtu.be/pYh4SMoxOz0 In addition the first ID and Tax video from Season One is offered below. ID &Tax https://youtu.be/JWqHZXaIWR Please take the time to view these and share with family and friends. We cannot solve this issue without your help. Your vote matters. Our goal is to make DACA a law and open enrollment for the more than 2 million kids that would be eligible. Kids that we have put through primary, middle, and high school at the cost of billions of dollars to us taxpayers. Denying them access to jobs with legitimate employers makes no sense at all. And every business person I talk to is suffering through this labor shortage. And we must have a solution for the 11 million already here. Legal status without a path to citizenship may be all we can expect for now. But that would be better than nothing. The ability to get an ID, a driver’s license, and a work permit would make a huge difference for them as well as us. We know there are thousands of experienced workers in our industry that would jump at the chance to get legal status and work ‘on the books’ and pay payroll taxes. My sincere thanks to each and every one of you. You are truly the ‘strength from within’ and make this company what is! -Stan
