faction within the Tablelands council is pushing to fast track the sale of office space in Atherton in a bid to get Mareeba Shire ratepayers to foot the bill. The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is at an advanced stage of confidential negotiations to buy land and an unoccupied building at 51 Mabel Street – next door to the Atherton council chambers. If the sale goes through before the end of the year, transfer committee member and TRC chief executive Ian Church will come under pressure to have the cost included as a de-amalgamation expense. The argument will be made that the existing council chambers in Atherton have insufficient space to house additional staff as a result of de-amalgamation. Informal discussions about the potential to include the sale price, which has not been finalised and cannot be disclosed due to commercial in confidence, have already taken place. Mareeba Shire Council transfer manager Rod Ferguson, who forms the transfer committee with Mr Church, confirmed there had been a push from the TRC to have the building included as a cost of de-amalgamation.

“There is no formal request on the table but the matter is being looked at and has been on and off the table for the past three months – ever since the building was identified as being available,” he said. “It certainly won’t be brought there [to a transfer committee meeting] by me but if it comes via Ian Church then I have no option but to give consideration to it.” If the transfer committee cannot agree on the legitimacy of the sale as a de-amalgamation expense the matter will be forwarded to Local Government Minister David Crisafulli who will make a final ruling. In a late and confidential agenda item at the September 5 TRC meeting, council carried a motion agreeing “to the negotiated outcome between Council Officers and Frank Kochi Real Estate and endorse the purchase of Lot 1 RP735966 [51 Mabel Street], Atherton”. The motion received six votes in favour. Councillors Gaye Taylor and Shaaron Linwood recorded their votes against the motion while Cr Jenny Jensen abstained. Cr Taylor said she had repeatedly sought, and received, assurances that the sale of the building would not be included as a de-amalgamation expense. “Every single time this came up cont. P3

Lions president visits Mossman By Ryan Groube Relaxed and at ease, surrounded by school children, Barry Palmer looked nothing like a man who had spent 10 days setting the agenda for an international organisation with a membership of 1.35 million. At the conclusion of the Lions International Board meeting at Port Douglas, Mr Palmer – the service club’s first Australian president – paid a visit to schoolchildren at Mossman to coincide with World Sight Day on October 10. During a visit to St Augustine’s, Mr Palmer oversaw vision screenings for preppies, participated in a tree planting ceremony and read to children in the school’s library. In the days prior, Mr Palmer had been holed up with 34 International Directors in a boardroom at the Sheraton Mirage allocating $2.6 million in funding for global Lions projects, implementing policy and setting goals for the service club for the year. Talking to The Express, Mr Palmer said he wanted to take the Lions International Board meeting to a regional location in Australia. “This is the first time in the history of the organisation that we have had a standalone board meeting in Australia and I didn’t want to do it in a big city, I wanted to bring it to regional Australia,” he said. “I thought bringing the whole international board

here [to the far north] would be a unique opportunity for them to experience life in these small regional communities in Australia.” A Sydneysider, Mr Palmer said he was honoured to be the first Australian president of Lions International but that was always most happy when performing the base functions of the club at the grass roots level. “What we are doing here today [at St Augustine’s] is the nuts and bolts of what our organisation is about,” he said. “It is all very well to be locked away in board rooms but this is where my heart is.” Mr Palmer’s pet project as Lion’s president is to provide children with Cerebral Palsy a customised walking frame called the Hart Walker which allows them to get about unaided. At a cost of $11,000 a frame, Lions International has already bought 1600 units. Mr Palmer also hopes to have 18 million trees planted during his presidency as well as encouraging Lions clubs across the country to “make reading a literacy a focus in their communities”. On October 11, the Lions International Board travelled to Kuranda for a family day before returning to their home countries. During the conference Lions International made a $50,000 SightFirst grant to fund eye health activities in the far north.

By Boyd Robertson Old hands and fresh faces alike will be uncovering the earth’s twinkling treasures with greater ease thanks to a streamlining of fossicking laws by the Queensland Government. Ken Kitson, the secretary of the Atherton Tableland Mineral and Lapidary Club welcomed the changes, which make recreational fossicking licences available over the internet. Mr Kitson said internet applications would make it more convenient for veteran fossickers to renew their licences and encourage newcomers to the craft. “I think it’s great news,” he said. “Up until now we’ve had to travel into Mareeba and make applications there, then wait weeks for the licences to come by mail, so being able to do it over the internet is a real bonus. “What I reckon it’s going be is the difference between people that were a bit wary of all the bureaucracy they had to go through getting a licence or not.” Mines Minister Andrew Cripps announced the changes on October 7, saying they would cater to an

ongoing surge in licence applications. “My department has issued more than 8000 recreational fossicking licences since 1 January 2012, compared to 5,108 during 2011 and 3,194 during 2006,” Mr Cripps said. “Licences can be issued for a one, six or 12-month period, with fees ranging from $7.05 to $44.75 for an individual, or $10.10 to $59.60 for a family.” Mr Kitson said the booming membership of his club pointed to a rise in interest in fossicking on the Tableland. “Our club membership has increased to about 100 members this year – it’s a 30 per cent increase on last year,” he said. “In past years we’ve only had about 60 or 70 members. “A lot of it is grey nomads that are settling down and have lots of time on their hands, but there’s also a lot of interest from the kids – the club does talks at Tolga State School and we get a very good response there. “You’d be surprised at the people that people that come in with an interest in rocks.”

Argument over TRC building From P1 at council I asked the question ‘is this going to be included as a de-amalgamation cost and each time I was told ‘No’’. I think they got sick of me asking but I had a gut feeling this would happen,” she said. Cr Linwood voted against the motion because she believes that the decision to purchase an additional site in Atherton will lead to the eventual closure of TRC offices in Herberton and Malanda. “I see it as the death knell for the Malanda and Herberton offices,” she said. “The Herberton office had 13 staff at amalgamation now it is down to three and has just been decimated. You could house nine or 10 staff in Herberton comfortably and the Malanda office has a big area. These offices are already set up. Why not utilise them?” TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said: “Tablelands Regional Council has recognised there are potential opportunities represented by the unoccupied building next door to the existing Council offices in Mabel Street, Atherton and is in negotiations with the owners.” “In that circumstance, no further comment is appropriate at present.”

Tom Gilmore runs for Mareeba Mayor By Ryan Groube TOM Gilmore has put an end to months of speculation, announcing his candidacy for Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Council. The former Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Mayor and State minister, flanked by his six-strong “Tom’s Team”, launched his campaign at the Post Office Centre on October 11. Mr Gilmore said the November 9 Mareeba Shire Council election was not just about electing a Mayor who could get a new council up and running but someone who could reunite a community divided after a long and bitter de-amalgamation campaign. “We have one shot in the locker and we’ve got to do it right but nothing can be achieved with a community that is divided,” he said. “Yes we need to ensure the orderly arrangement of council business and get everything on the up and up but the second part [reuniting the

community] is equally as important. “There has been some unfortunate things said which has caused some rift in the community what I bring to the table is the skills to bring the community back together for the future.” Mr Gilmore said his state government experience and recent term as Mayor of the TRC had given him a “wealth of knowledge and experience that ought not be wasted”. Joining Mr Gilmore on the ‘Tom’s Team’ ticket is: TRC’s divisional councillor Jenny Jensen, business owners Karen Ewin, Nipper Brown, Allan Holmes and Colleen Owens as well as The Kuranda Paper editor Garth Owen. Mr Gilmore said the team he assembled had all the skills required to be an effective and “fiercely independent” council. Mr Gilmore’s nomination sets up a intriguing showdown with former Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Mick

Borzi’s ‘Your Team’. Mr Borzi’s ‘Your Team’ includes: Alan Pedersen, Mary Graham, Paul Johnstone, Steve Dominikovic, Kay Hastie and Fred Cristaldi. “All team members who are standing for the position of councillor have been highly successful in their respective fields ranging from business, industry and community affairs,” Mr Borzi said. “I believe that what means most is all members of Your Team are committed to the people and the future of the Mareeba Shire and see the need to return to open and accountable management of all affairs that a Shire Council manages on behalf of ratepayers and residents.” Mick Borzi and Tom Gilmore will face off in a one off Mayoral debate hosted by the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce on Friday, November 1 at the Mareeba United Football Club at Borzi Park, off Chewko Road.

New agreement good news for mine By Ryan Groube

Premier Campbell Newman and Hirobumi Kawano, president of Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation, after signing the MoU.

A pre-eminent miner says the formalisation of the relationship between the Queensland Government and Japan will make it easier for resource projects in the Far North to get off the ground. Premier Campbell Newman recently returned from a trade mission to Japan where he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Japan Oil Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC). Under the MoU each party ‘agree to explore opportunities for collaboration in the development of Queensland resources including coal, gas and minerals including base metals and rare earth minerals’. Mark Strizek the managing director of Vital Metals – a Perth-based mining company looking to establish a $100 million Tungsten mine at Mt Carbine – welcomed the MoU. Vital’s Watershed project is expected to employ 200 workers during construction and 120 once operational with the

potential to extract 6000 tonnes of tungsten concentrate, valued at about $270 million, each year. JOGMEC own a 30 per cent stake in Watershed after bankrolling a definitive feasibility study for the project. Mr Strizek said market conditions within Australia made it difficult to bankroll major new projects and that increasingly companies were being forced to lean on foreign investors. “Queensland is very much focused in the minds of Japanese investors, particularly the Japanese government,” he said. “The current market is tough [for miners], just funding exploration work can be difficult so the big challenge [for our industry] is finding ways to take potential projects to the next level. “At the end of the day JOGMEG have a 30 per cent stake in the project but they could help secure 70 per cent of the funding [through corporate Japanese investors] required to make this [Watershed] project actually happen.” Mr Strizek said the idea that foreign

investment was sending Australian generated wealth overseas needed to be tempered by the reality of market conditions. “If we can get Watershed up and running it leads directly to construction, employment and we also pay royalties and taxes – to me that is a good thing for everyone,” he said. “In the current market funding this project with nothing but our money would be very difficult. “We have to be realistic and at the end of the day it is better to have 70 per cent of something then all of nothing.” Mr Newman said the investment potential of organisations like JOGMEC was “staggering” and the MoU would help “underpin the State’s economy for decades to come. In a statement, JOGMEC said: “Queensland is one of the resource-richest lands in the world and, for over half a century, has been one of the most important natural resources suppliers for Japan.” Construction of the Watershed project has been tentatively slated for late 2014.

Cat registration uncertainty By Boyd Robertson The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is set to decide on Thursday whether or not to continue mandatory cat registration. The Queensland Government on September 23 repealed state-wide laws requiring all cat owners to register their pets, instead leaving the decision in the hands of local Street) councils. (Behind 37 Rankin Council will vote on the issue during its Thursday ordinary meeting in Atherton. Biosecurity Queensland officer Greg McDougall said it was better

for councils to make the decision. “Councils are best placed to decide the most practical and appropriate approach to local issues associated with domestic cat ownership,” Mr McDougall said. “Under the changes, state-wide mandatory registration of cats will end; however individual councils will be able to determine whether the benefits of cat registration warrant its continuation in their area. “If a council decides to continue with cat registration in their area, they will have the ability to make and enforce local laws.”

Operator of Mareeba Animal Refuge Jenny Walsh said she hoped the TRC and the soon-to-be Mareeba Shire Council would keep cat registration mandatory. “I’m definitely in favour of it (mandatory registration),” she said. “It makes for ease of identification of animals – and there’s an incentive to pet owners because if a lost cat born after 2010 is found it’s registered it can be reclaimed from the pound for free, otherwise it can cost an owner upwards of $300 to release it.”

Curves Atherton and Mareeba, the weight loss and fitness centres specially designed for women, has joined forces with Cancer Council to help fight cancer. From 14th to 26th October 2013, the club will waive its usual joining fee of $149 when a donation is made to Cancer Council’s “I Heart Pink” campaign. The aim is to raise funds for vital breast and gynecological cancer research, prevention and support services during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. This year, Curves’ clubs across Australia are striving to meet the fundraising goal of $250,000, according to Glenda Johnston of Atherton and Mareeba clubs. “Curves clubs have been fundraising for Cancer

Council for the past seven years and have raised more than $1.4 million. The funds raised have helped Cancer Council’s work in women’s cancer research, prevention and support services for Australians affected by cancer. One of these services is Breast Cancer Connect, where a newly diagnosed patient is paired with a volunteer cancer survivor to ease them through their cancer journey,” said Johnston. “Excess weight, lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet are amongst the most preventable causes of disease. It is our hope that this month, local women are motivated to come through our doors and take those first steps towards leading a more cancer smart lifestyle.

Hot, dry conditions caused local fires By Boyd Robertson

Burnt out woodland near Mt Molloy.

High temperatures, bone-dry conditions and almost zero humidity turn the Tableland into a tinderbox at this time of year. Several blazes have already occupied the attention of the region’s firefighters, with both urban and rural fire brigades responding to fires near Mt Molloy and Mareeba. The Mt Molloy fire, which has burned to the south of the township for several weeks, is reported to be “well under control” as of Friday afternoon by RFS Acting Cairns Peninsula Area Co-Ordinator, Jamie Haskell. The blaze has incinerated a large but unde-

fined area of bushland but was stopped short of reaching the town of Mt Molloy by the efforts of firefighters, who spent three days battling to contain it with backburning. Mr Haskell said the cause of the fire was unknown but blamed its spread an intensity on the tinder-dry October conditions. “It’s gotten really dry, there’s been no real storms yet and the wind has picked up, all of which has really made this thing go,” he said. “This time of year really is peak fire risk – it’s dry, there’s the heat, and there’s no humidity. “Even a good firebreak won’t necessarily stop a running fire – a breath of wind can lift a burning ember over it and just like that it starts up on

the other side.” A smaller fire that started at Emerald End Road near Mareeba on October 9 was quickly pounced on and extinguished by firefighters from Mareeba and Atherton stations, in addition to the Speewah and Davies Creek Rural Fire Brigades. Again the conditions were so favourable to conflagrations the fire managed to jump the Barron River, but was stopped by the combined efforts of the firefighters. Davies Creek RFB treasurer/secretary Warren McNamara said the fire destroyed around five hectares of bushland before it was stopped. No properties were damaged.

Truckie in crash saved by fridge By Boyd Robertson A stout fridge and the efforts of rescue personnel proved to be the difference between life and almost certain death for a truck driver during a spectacular crash on the ‘Jump-Up’ section of the Kennedy Highway near Walkamin. The prime mover the man was driving plunged over the edge of four-metre high embankment in the early hours of October 11, flipping and crushing the cab with the driver inside. Atherton Fire Station captain Jamie Isabella said the mini-fridge installed in the cab prevented a total collapse of the cab and allowed the driver to survive until rescue workers safely extracted him two and a half hours later. “The cab was pretty much upside down and completely squashed – what’s happened is his fridge in the cab has created a bit of a space around him and has saved him from being crushed,” Cpt Isabella said at the scene of the crash. “We’ve had a long process of disentanglement trying to get him out safely – there were a lot of other concerns we had when responding to the scene like a possible fuel leak from the vehicle.” After being extracted by rescue

crews the driver was treated by Mareeba paramedics then airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital in an Emergency Management Queensland helicopter, but his injuries are not believed to be lifethreatening. Cpt Isabella said the man had remained in good spirits throughout the ordeal. “He was a real good sport about it the whole time,” he said. “He kept talking to us.” By deadline, the driver of the truck has not been positively identified, but he is believed to be from Mareeba. The truck, believed to be registered to a Gympie transport company, was carrying a heavy-duty grader and a silver sedan on its flatbed trailer, which followed the cab over the embankment and also tore a 20-metre long gash through the dry bush beside the road. A crane was brought in from Mareeba to assist in the extraction operation. A separate accident occurred in Mareeba CBD on October 8 in which a semi-trailer collided with the back of a sedan outside Mareeba Post Office Centre. Nobody was injured in that incident, but the driver of the truck was issued a notice to appear in court on a drinkdriving charge.

Mareeba businesses honoured By Boyd Robertson The shining stars of the Mareeba business community will be honoured at the 2013 Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Business Awards night on October 26. During the gala dinner awards night at Mareeba Turf Club, the Chamber will recognise the most outstanding businesses and people in the following categories – Business of the Year, New Business of the Year, Communitarian of the Year, Community Group of the Year, the Customer Service Award and Rural / Agricultural Award. The awards night is held every two years. Chamber president Pietro Girgenti said the awards were a chance to recognise the achievements of hardworking businesses and businesspeople in Mareeba. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the exceptional individuals and organisations right under our noses here in Mareeba,” he said. “So many businesses and people in this town do a fantastic job and it’s definitely worth recognising the contribution they make to our community. “We think it’s important as a

community to take the time to acknowledge these people and organisations.” QTs Early Learning Centre was a co-winner of the 2011 New Business of the Year award and winner of the Customer Service Award. Manager Siale Jenkins said the recognition had made a big difference to the fledgling childcare centre. “We were very surprised to pick up the award,” she said. “It did have a very noticeable effect – we felt that childcare wasn’t really seen as a serious business up until that point and receiving the award did make it feel like we were being recognised in the wider community for the work we were putting in. “It is difficult for a new business to start up in these conditions – the other childcare providers in town have been here for a long time.” Ms Jenkins also had some words of advice for those hoping to be nominated for an award. “You have to be passionate about what you do, that makes the difference,” she said. “If you’re passionate and you deliver good product you can’t go wrong.”

Tom Gilmore quashes rumour

I have become aware of a rumour that has been circulating throughout the community of recent times, which states that if Tom Gilmore is elected to the position of Mayor in three weeks time, then he will take the shire back to amalgamation with the TRC. Let me clearly and unambiguously, state for the record--I have no interest in the past - my eyes are firmly fixed on the future, for a bold new Mareeba Shire, financially secure, stable and prosperous. Should I be elected as Mayor, I will bring all of my experience and energy to the task of building a new shire. A shire of which we will all be proud.

Powerline incidents spark Ergon review

Ergon Energy will investigate the circumstances of four separate cane harvesting-related powerline incidents that occurred within hours of each other across north and far north Queensland on October 11. The spate of impacts has prompted an urgent warning to cane growers and harvesting contractors to apply Ergon Energy’s “Look up and Live” principles. In Far North Queensland cane haul-out equipment hit powerlines and a power pole at two separate locations in just over an hour. Malanda and Peeramon district customers (1,552 initially) on the Tableland had power interrupted shortly after 6.15am when a haul-out bin hit lines along Fig Tree Pocket Road near Yungaburra. Power was restored by 7.30am when two Ergon crews were called to the scene. A short time after power was restored on the Tablelands, a similar incident occurred south of

Babinda along the Bruce Highway. The haul-out machinery involved is believed to have hit a power pole, causing lines to clash and affecting supply to another 1,500 customers. Meanwhile two incidents in the Burdekin district at about the same time involving cane harvesters hitting powerlines were attended to by Ergon Energy crews. At 4.40am a harvester hit overhead lines near Kirknie Road, impacting power supply to 255 customers around Home Hill for up to four hours. In another incident at 9.15am, powerlines were brought down onto a harvester working near Brandon. Power was interrupted to 218 customers. An Ergon spokesman labelled the impacts a “disappointing and potentially fatal reminder” to the cane industry about powerline safety. “We have a dedicated community safety advisor who has been working hard with these industries to reinforce harvesting safety around powerlines,” the spokesman commented.

Range road works begun

WORK to stabilise slopes on a key route connecting Cairns and the Tablelands has begun. The $2.95 million project will repair nine slopes on the Gillies Range, between the bottom of the range and Heales Outlook. Department of Transport and Main Roads Regional Director (Far North) Tony Potter said the work would repair damage from wet weather in 2011 which closed the road for two weeks. “We acknowledge the importance of this road as one of two key routes connecting Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands, particularly for freight and commuter traffic,” Mr Potter said. “While the contractor will aim to limit disrup-

tions as much as possible, the nature of the works and challenging environment is likely to result in traffic delays. “I urge motorists to factor additional travel time into their plans while we deliver these very important repairs.” Mareeba-based Heavy Equipment Hire will deliver the works on behalf of the department. HEH delivered slope stabilisation works on the range road in 2012. Mr Potter said a range of geo-technical repair methods would be used including rock dowels, removing loose material, steel fibre reinforced shotcrete and wire cables. Trees which contribute to the slope’s unstable condition will be removed while new horizontal drains will also be constructed.

Kennedy Highway closure

A section of the Kennedy Highway near Ravenshoe will be temporarily closed from October 14 to fast-track flood repair works. Transport and Main Roads Regional Director (Far North) Tony Potter said the closure would extend from East Evelyn Road to Kidner Road and continue until November 16, weather permitting. “Access will be maintained for local residents and their visitors on properties within the closed section, under arrangements with site staff,” Mr Potter said. “The closure is part of repair works on 11.56km of the highway currently underway between Kidner Road and Ravenshoe.” The temporary closure would help the contractor fast-track the works before the start of the next wet season. “I appreciate the temporary closure will impact on motorists, however, the aim is for the contractor to get the works done sooner, ultimate-

Millaa Millaa church celebration

On a glorious Spring day; Sunday, 29th September, 2013; a gathering of Christians came from all over the Tablelands and beyond, to celebrate at St Michael and All Angels Anglican church in Millaa Millaa. Firstly, lay preacher Ettie Ferrari received her certificate of licence from Canon Reverend Bill Woodland. This will allow her to work as a Lay Minister in the Parish of the Upper Tablelands. Ettie, assisted by Canon Rev Woodland, performed her first service in the church. Then Shirley Sheppard and Dot Perrott unveiled the plaque mounted above the doorway of the church entrance for the church bell; which was dedicated to the Rev Les Whereat, and restored in the memory of Timothy Sheppard by John Perrott of Perrott Engineering. The bell tower was destroyed during Cyclone Larry, and John Perrott kindly restored the original bell. John attended Sunday school at Millaa Millaa when his family was on a dairy farm there many years ago. Tim’s son John Sheppard then rang the bell to herald the end of the service, and the celebrations continued with a shared picnic and fellowship in the Lion’s Park. The date chosen was significant as it was the feast day of St Michael, after whom the Millaa Millaa Anglican church was named. Services are held twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 5 pm, and special services are held at Easter and Christmas. All are welcome to attend.

MEET TOM'S TEAM Led by Mayoral Candidate Tom Gilmore Tom Gilmore To be elected as Mayor of our new Mareeba Shire would be a great honour. I will bring a wealth of experience to the task ahead – rebuilding a new Shire. My recent experience was that of building an amalgamation of the Tablelands and Mareeba Shires (2008-2012) and the experience gained over those four years will serve the community of Mareeba Shire well. Born in Mareeba, I have a farming background and 13 years experience as a Councillor, including four years as mayor, 12 years in parliament and two and a half years as a Queensland State Minister. I am well equipped to handle the challenging task ahead. Our future prosperity needs stability, economic viability and social cohesion.

School students visit Japan By Alexandria Struthers DURING the September school holidays, for the first time, 11 students accompanied by two teachers from St Stephens Catholic College travelled to Tokyo for a cultural experience. The students, including myself, spent a few days in Tokyo, sightseeing. This was before travelling further north to a rural town called Sanoshi to experience home life in Japan. The nine-day itinerary consisted of sightseeing, experiencing home and school life and visiting the temple town of Nikko. We also visited the iconic Tokyo Tower, and caught lots of trains, mainly slower ones. “The original purpose of the trip was for the students to experience Japanese life through home life and school participation”, St Stephens teacher and trip chaperone Gail Musch said. Students were paired up and spent six days with their host family in Sanoshi, a town similar to Mareeba. During that time we experienced home and family life, local cuisine and visited local sights in the area. We also had the privilege of participating and experiencing a traditional tea ceremony. Another important aspect of the trip was attending a local school to experience school life. The students attended Sano Nihon Daigaku Secondary

St Stephens students outside the Nikko temple during our cultural visit to Japan. Students spent a day and half at the school exSchool, which is one the elite schools in the area. St Stephen’s student William Snell said, “The periencing a typical day of school for Japanese school was very different to Australian schools. It students. We attended Maths, English, Art and singing was a lot more academic and rigorous with more mental arithmetic. It was a very big school com- classes to get a feel of school life. We also attended the after-school clubs which pared to Australian schools.”

Japanese students are required to be a part of. The clubs included baseball, swimming, tennis, martial arts – we also got to see a “Taiko club” in action performing on traditional Japanese drums. Visiting the local town of Nikko, famous for being the home of Japan’s most lavishly decorated shrine called the “Toshogu”, was a highlight of the trip. Nikko is located around beautiful scenery, mountainous landscapes, lakes, waterfalls and is home to wild monkeys. “Nikko was a lot of fun, it was very beautiful. We saw monkeys on the side of the road, which was pretty cool. Also the waterfall we visited was pretty amazing”, William said. Mrs Musch hopes to make the Japanese trip a biannual event. “The trip was definitely a success; we hope to continue it every two years. Also we hope to reciprocate with them by having their students come and visit our school,” she said. The other accompanying teacher Rohan Priestly said the trip had exceeded all of his and the other students expectations. The students who attended the trip with me were: William Snell, Hannah Snell, Georgia Stark, Emily Stark, Flynn Forsyth, Janna Durano, Grace Manestar, Joy Musch, Alex Enderlin and Kai Priestly.

Hansen Ford dealership Principal Graeme Ford said the closure of Australian manufacturing plants in 2016 will not impact his business.

Hansen Ford to stay open By Ryan Groube Mareeba’s Ford dealership will be unaffected by Ford Australia’s decision to stop manufacturing cars in Australia in 2016. Hansen Ford dealership Principal Graeme Ford said he had been bombarded with queries about the businesses future since Ford Australia’s announcement in May. Inquires had become so frequent that Mr Ford felt compelled to correct the record. “People assume that because Ford is closing [its Australian manufacturing arm] that we are walking away and that is not the case,” he said. “It will have no impact on us at all; in fact, we will have more models and a larger range of cars to sell after the closure of the Broadmeadows plant.” Australian manufacturing of Ford motorcars is planned to end in October 2016.

People who purchase Ford models that are being phased out – Falcon sedan, Falcon ute and Ford Territory SUV – will have access to parts, warranty and technical support until 2026. By the end of 2017, every Ford model will be superseded as part of a transition to stocking fully imported vehicles. “What we are moving towards is a full range of fully imported motorcars,” Mr Ford said. “For the first time in history we will have access to a right hand drive Mustang. This is the advantage of moving towards the global production of motorcars.” Mr Ford said he had been at the helm of the business since 1975 and wasn’t going anywhere. In the past five years Ford Motor Company losses in Australia has totalled about $600 million. Chief executive of Ford Australia Bob

Graziano said Australia was one of the most competitive and crowded automotive markets in the world. Australia has annual car sales of about 1.1 million new vehicles with consumers having access to more than 65 brands and 365 models. “Given the fragmented marketplace and the low model volumes that result, we decided that manufacturing locally is no longer viable,” Mr Graziano said. “Our customers will buy and service Ford vehicles through the same great dealers we have throughout the country today, and we will continue to support the communities in which we operate.” Ford Australia has no plans to reverse its decision to close its manufacturing plants in Australia despite Federal Industry Minister Ian MacFarlane revisiting a possible rescue package at a meeting at Broadmeadows head office last week.

Qube Logistics contracted to transport Tableland sugar cane By Ryan Groube Mackay Sugar has contracted Qube Logistics to transport sugarcane, sugar and molasses for its Mossman Mill on a five-year deal beginning in May 2014. Qube Logistics has had the transport contract with Mossman Mill for the past seven years; however, as of May next year, the contract will also include the transport of sugarcane from the Tableland. Earlier this year, Mackay Sugar signed a Sugar Supply Agreement with Tableland Canegrowers which will see an additional 700,000 tonnes come online at the Mossman Mill.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

Mackay Sugar chief executive Quinton Hildebrand said securing a transport contractor was a major step in securing the future growth of the Mossman Mill. “The new transport system meets the requirements of the Tablelands cane growers as it provides for the cane to be loaded into trailers using the existing on-farm pads, thereby reducing the infield haulage,” he said. “Importantly, Qube is committed to being a part of our community consultation process associated with the transportation of Tablelands cane to Mossman Mill, with the aim of incorporating a number of measures that address the needs of all key stakeholders in its Transportation Manage-

ment Plan.” Mackay Sugar’s recently disbanded Community Working Group (CWG) however refuses to go quietly having met last week to discuss ways of reducing the amount of trucks that will pass through Mt Molloy and Julatten. The remnants of the CWG, short chairman David Donohue and Member for Cook David Kempton who resigned their positions prior to the group being dissolved, met in Julatten on October 9 to discuss their options. Julatten resident and CWG member Dennis Rose told The Express the group would lobby candidates in the up-coming Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) elections on November 9 in a bid

to reduce tonnage. “We will be using this as an election issue. If candidates want the votes of people from Mt Molloy and Julatten this is the issue we want resolved,” he said. Mr Rose conceded that the issue is largely a State Government matter but hopes a newly elected MSC could assist in negotiations with Mackay Sugar as well as fronting money for a safety assessment of the proposed route, specifically the Rex Range. “This isn’t about stopping the trucks it is about coming up with a level of tonnage that will be safe and allow us as residents to go about our lives in a usual manner,” he said.

Plant a Fig Tree... get a whole ecosystem! There’s always plenty happening in our native gardens here at Yuruga, but when the fig trees are in fruit it is simply spectacular. This is a story about our Sunday morning breakfast last weekend under a Sandpaper Fig tree on the edge of the Jump-up looking down over Mareeba.

Community CELEBRATIONS

Our attention was caught first of all by a large flock of Fig Birds feeding on the masses of ripe fig fruits. Female Fig Birds are plain, even dowdy, but the males are something else, with their bright red eye-patch, green back and yellow breast. Together, their mellow chortling filled the air with a delightful chorus. As we sat quietly with our cuppa, the Fig Birds were joined by a pair of spectacular Red-Winged Parrots. They too came to feed on the figs, but instead of gobbling them down whole like the Fig Birds, they picked at the ripe fruit, separating the tiny seeds and spitting out the flesh. Yellow Honeyeaters and Brown Honeyeaters flitted along the branches and amongst the foliage of the fig trees, foraging for insects and filling the air with delightful birdsong. A small flock of Peaceful Doves fed quietly on the ground beneath the trees, joined from time to time by a group of Double-Barred Finches pecking whatever seeds they could find amongst the leaf litter. Then our resident Green-Winged Pigeon joined us for a while on its daily patrol through our gardens. This plump brown pigeon with glossy green wings has set up home at Yuruga, and is quite unfazed by the daily hustle and bustle. With the wet season approaching (fingers crossed!) the peace will soon be shattered by the two larrikin loud-mouths of our tropical summertime, the Channel-Billed Cuckoos and Koels. Perched high up in the taller fig trees, the Channel-Billed Cuckoos will announce their presence with their unmistakable raucous din, and the Storm Birds (or Koels) will join in the deafening cacophony with their feverish crescendo call. Both birds love to feed on figs, so I guess we only have ourselves to blame if they choose our garden to screech and yell. Yuruga Nursery is situated on the edge of the Jump-up at Walkamin. The Jumpup marks the end of a lava flow from Bones Knob, and hence our gardens are really just one great big pile of basalt boulders. Some might think that rocks are a nuisance to be cleared away, but to us our basalt rocks are a fantastic framework around which to plant all sorts of interesting plants. Piles of rocks are the perfect natural setting for figs, and as you can see, even one fig tree can be a miniecosystem all of its own. Every garden should have a fig tree! No wonder we love out native gardens.

Happy gardening, and see you at Yuruga!

With the festive season fast approaching here are some handy hints to remember:

Tip ONE: When heading out for a social event make ice cubes out of the same liquid you will be drinking to prevent your drink from becoming watered down. Tip TWO: Don’t throw out all that leftover wine: freeze into ice cubes for future use in cooking and sauces. TIP THREE: Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely light scent in each room when the light is turned on.

THIS WEEKS MOVIES!

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS...

There’s an action packed thrilling week ahead at The Rising Sun Movie Lounge at the Mareeba RSL – with something for almost everyone. The incredible 2 GUNS, with Denzil Washington and

Mark Wahlberg continues for a second great week – and what a comedy action flic it is. New on the big screen is Vin Diesel in the adrenalin pumping RIDDICK, whilst one of the year’s best action dramas is WHITE HOUSE DOWN, starring glamour guy Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx in an action thriller dra-

ma that will keep you fascinated. TURBO, the excellent animation from Dreamworks, continues. This is a lovely feel good film for all ages, from 3 to 103. Everyone who has seen it so far has been more than delighted, it's hilarious and pure fun for all ages.

WHITE HOUSE DOWN - While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman (Channing Tatum) springs

into action to save his child, Emily (Joey King) and protect the president (Jamie Foxx) from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders. Review by Louise Keller: Like Bruce Willis in the Die Hard franchise, Channing Tatum plays the anti-hero who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He even takes off his shirt half way through the film and like Willis, ends up wearing just a singlet thereafter. Buff body on display, of course. Tatum is getting better and better and here, with bullets flying, the White House's crystal chandelier shaking and a well constructed plot with effective story strands nicely weaving texture into the mix, he shows his all-round credentials. At the helm is Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) who not only knows how to direct action but to mix light and shade, add nuance and inject humour as part of the narrative. With large scale music as its counterpoint, the tension mounts and the action is full on with heavy artillery pounding, choppers crashing, the army at the ready with tanks and gymnastics here there and everywhere. I liked the action sequence in which Cale and the President screech around the White House gardens in the presidential limo, hotly pursued. Although the outcome is pretty well assured, there are surprises along the way and Emmerich keeps us engaged and connected throughout, always rooting for the good guys. A thoroughly enjoyable action thriller.

RIDDICK -

Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick (Vin Diesel) finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of deadly mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past, looking for revenge. Review by Andrew L. Urban: Even the chick in Riddick is macho, a cartoonish escape-chase-creature feature with sci-fi aspirations. Katee Sackhoff plays Dahl (Aussies will be amused), who proudly proclaims in one of the film's typically turbo-charged lines, "I don't f*** men ...I f*** 'em up sometimes if they deserve it..." delivered after doing just that to mercenary hardman Santana (Jorda Molla). Dahl is one of Johns' (Matt Nable) 'men', a small team coming to not so much rescue Riddick (Vin Diesel) from his hellhole of a plant, as to capture him - for a wrong he dun of which we don't learn much until much later and then in strangled fashion. No matter, it's hardly important in this lunar plot. What matters here is how Riddick can damage his body and repair it. Lots of gory bits, including to other people and angry creatures. The Riddick character has all the appeal of a teenager's hero, with his growl for voice, a sullen persona and a beefy body, all pent for action and violent retribution. Like so much in this film, Riddick himself is a special effect, a near-superhuman hero who can withstand just about anything, recover from any wound, fight with bare hands against monsters (only a slight exaggeration) and who not so much gains our sympathy as demands our attention.

2 GUNS -

Undercover DEA agent Robert 'Bobby' Trench (Denzel Washington) takes advantage of gunman Michael Stigman's (Mark Wahlberg) idea to rob a bank - so he can bust him along with a mob boss. However, it proves too successful with much more money seized than anticipated with Trench's forces not stopping the getaway. Complicating things still more, Stigman turns out to be a Naval Intelligence agent who shoots Trench and takes the money. The inter service debacle lands Trench and Stigman in a bloody web of corrupt clandestine rivalries as they are hunted, blackmailed and isolated for the money on both sides of the law. Review by Louise Keller: The repartee and edgy relationship between Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg is the highlight of this enjoyable action thriller in which loyalties are questioned as bullets ricochet, buildings explode and the whys and wherefores of a $43.125 million stash are canvassed. Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband) plants his foot on the pedal and as a result, the pace is snappy with never a lull in the proceedings. It's quite a yarn and Blake Masters' screenplay (based on the Boom! Studios series of graphic novels by Steven Grant and illustrator Mateus Santolouco) is a happy mix of chaos, action and humour when Mexican drug lords, undercover federal operatives, the military and government agents collide in spectacular fashion at hyper speed.

TURBO -

A freak accident might just help an everyday garden snail (voice of Ryan Reynolds) achieve his biggest dream: winning the Indy 500. Review by Louise Keller: I felt like cheering as the turbo-charged garden snail navigates precariously between screeching, speeding racing car wheels on the track of the Indy 500 in the rousing climactic finale of this upbeat, quirky and utterly charming family 3D animation. It’s a cute idea to juxtapose a speed-crazy garden snail onto a race track and director David Soren has woven together an endearing tale about the ultimate underdog for whom the stars are the limit. Filled with inventive ideas, wacky concepts and characters so colourful they are off the rainbow chart, Turbo is a breath of fresh air guaranteed to delight youngsters and adults alike.

Tour highlights deadly disease By Boyd Robertson Tableland banana growers will refocus on biosecurity after a study tour to Asia revealed the potentially disastrous consequences of letting a new and deadly strain of banana plant disease into Queensland. Panama Disease is caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum cubense and kills banana plants through dehydration, virtually wiping out the Gros Michel variety in the 1950s and causing the worldwide industry shift to the thenimmune Cavendish strain. A recently-discovered variant of Panama Disease called ‘Tropical Race 4’ however can successfully infect Cavendish bananas and represents a huge risk to the Queensland industry. Tropical Race 4 is not present in Queensland but is considered endemic in the Northern Territory, with no controls in place to stop its spread. A meeting of the Mareeba Banana Growers Association at the Mareeba RSL on October 9 heard the results of a study tour which visited the Davao region on the Philippines and the city of Nanning in southern China. Containing representatives from Howe Farming, Atherton Gold Produce, the Australian Banana Growers Council and other stakeholder groups, the tour aimed to gather information about containment strategies for the disease and how they could be applied in Australia. Howe Farming quality assurance manager James Howe said the trip highlighted the importance of biosecurity practices on banana farms. “We are going to be looking at on-farm

and cross-farm movement practices and stepping up our efforts to ensure that vehicles are cleaned properly – I’d also like to express a plea to the public and groups like piggers to respect property boundaries so they don’t come onto farms and possibly spread infected soil,” Mr Howe said. “There is no cure for this disease, the only way to protect against it is through quarantine – affected plants will die and the soil surrounding them will be inaccessible and useless. “I think that it’s certainly possible that it can get into farms on the Tableland and the result, if that happened, would be a complete shutdown of all the farm traffic in the area, like what happened with the Black Sigatoka outbreak in Tully in 2001.” A spokesperson from Biosecurity Queensland also confirmed the threat that Tropical Race 4 represented. “Tropical Race 4 poses a major threat to the banana industry as it attacks all types of bananas including the Cavendish variety,” the spokesperson said. “If the disease were to become widespread across Queensland’s major banana growing districts, it could decimate the industry. “There are strict quarantine measures in place to prevent the spread of this disease – In Queensland all high risk materials including soil appliances or other things that have been in contact with a banana plant or the soil in which a banana plant has been growing will need an Inspectors Approval before entering the State. The Asia study trip showed the consequences of not containing Tropical Race 4 and the measures some growers were willing to take to prevent the spread of the

A group of Tableland banana grower representatives toured farms in the Philippines and China to check out their strategies for dealing with the dangerous Tropical Race 4 of Panama Disease. RIGHT: A banana plant infected with Tropical Race 4. disease. “China was a perfect example of what not to do, they had no real containment practices in place so the disease was just everywhere,” said Mr Howe. “The Philippines had very effective control measures – we were actually directed through a sterilising footbath by men with M4 rifles. “They were very friendly guys, through – the friendliest people to ever point an assault rifle at me.” Mr Howe also welcomed the October 4 announcement of a national plan to combat banana freckle dis-

ease and commended the Queensland Government’s decision to contribute $125,000 to the project. ”That is absolutely money well spent,” he said. “If the Australian banana industry is disease-free it will be protected against overseas imports. “Imports are game over for the Australian industry because we cannot compete with overseas production costs – the closer we get toward controlling and eliminating diseases like freckle and Panama Disease, the closer we get to stopping overseas imports.”

Cattle numbers increased by 60 head this week Mareeba Combined Agents penned a total of 368 head of Prime and Store cattle for this week’s sale. Numbers did increase by 60 head this week. The market was predominantly medium weight manufacturing type cattle which met with limited com-

petition. The heavier and older bullocks, cows and bulls did improve in value by as by as much as 8 c/ kg for the bullocks, 9 c/ kg for a cow and only 1 c/ kg for the bulls. The limited number of bullocks and heifers suitable for the local trade

improved by up to 11 c/ kg for the best of the steers but the quality and condition for the heifers was not up to the best on offer at last weeks sale. Store steers and heifers remained firm in value and best of these cattle purchased by a local feedlot operator.

A very young gun By Ryan Groube At just five years of age Matthew Boylett is following in the footsteps of his racing hero - V8 Supercar driver Jamie Whincup. As Whincup was securing poll position at Bathurst during the Top 10 Shootout, Matthew was tearing around Mareeba’s MakoTrac. Racing as a P-Plater at Mareeba Karting Club’s monthly meet, Matthew is already slashing huge chunks of time off his personal best. In the midgets category, Matthew’s first lap of the day took him two minutes and six seconds to complete. During the final race, he clocked a lap time of one minute and 30 seconds.

Matthewis too young to race at the track at Cairns, which requires racers to be at least seven-years-old. Not deterred, his family have bought him up from Gordonvale to Mareeba for the past three race meetings. Matthew’s Dad Wayne, also a keen karter, said his son had been coming to race meets all his life and couldn’t wait to get in his own kart. “We gave him three or four goes on the other track before we got him his first kart and he just loves it,” Wayne said. Matthew drives a highly modified Arrow cart which has a custom seat and pedals to accommodate his small stature and is yet to be able to harness the full power of the kart.

Thurston masterclass

Jonathan Thurston playing touch football with St Thomas Primary School students during a Mareeba visit last week

By Boyd Robertson Rugby superstar Jonathan Thurston brought a smile to everyone’s face when he dropped in at St Thomas’s Primary School and Mareeba State School on October 8. The Cowboys co-captain, reckoned to be the best rugby player in the world, was in town thanks to a sponsorship deal between his team and Mareeba Toyota. Thurston participated in a friendly

game of girls versus boys touch football at St Thomas’s, playing on the girls’ team and kicking a last-second field goal to win the match. Afterwards he answered a series of questions from the school’s students and signed memorabilia. Thurston told The Express he thought it was “definitely important” that high-profile players like him visit rural communities and schools. “Kids up here don’t always get the chance to see the big players and

teams because they’re not in the city,” he said. “When I was at school there was never a visit by any professional players so I think it’s cool to do this. “The message is not just about rugby league, it’s also about staying in school and hard work in school.” St Thomas sports teacher Michael Raso echoed Thurston’s sentiments. “It’s essential to see big players out in little schools,” he said. “It has a huge effect on the kids – he’s the biggest sport icon around and

the anticipation for him turning up has been just building and building. “As soon as I mentioned he was coming here, the kids just went crazy.” Year 7 St Thomas student Chris Adams, who captains the school’s boys rugby team, said Thurston was an “inspiration” to him and his teammates. “I think he’s exceptional,” said Adams, 12. “He plays his heart out – if you’re a rugby player you can look up to him for inspiration.” Thurston will be returning to play

for the Kangaroos in the World Cup in the UK, which begins on October 26. He said he was confident in his team for the series. “I think we’re in a solid position and I’m confident in my role,” he said. “The challenge is going to be meeting the standards left by our predecessors in the team – this is the World Cup, there’s a lot at stake so the pressure is high. “I think we’ve been pegged as the favourites for the Cup so I’m looking forward to taking it off New Zealand.”

Mareeba golfers semi-final bound

The Mareeba United Football Club will hold its presentation night on October 19 at the Borzi Park clubhouse. Bulls veterans Victor Madrid, Dennis Allen and Wayne Srhoj are all in the hunt for the player of the year, meanwhile in the ladies, Samantha Cater, Rachel Watson and Katia Spena will be racing for the ladies top award. Rising stars Ben Fresta, Adrian Madrid and Shaun Owens will be close for the mens rookie of the year, meanwhile Spena, along with follow youngsters in the ladies team Marina Cetnic and Tarnie Potts have been shortlisted for the ladies rising star. The club will also be announcing its fourth Hall of Fame inductee on the night who will join Bulls legends Pasco Rogato, Makse Srhoj and Lui Serafini. Bookings are essential and can be purchased a Claude Cater Mensland, Byrnes Street, Mareeba.

Fight night

Mareeba Amatuer Boxing Club will host a fight night at the PCYC Hall on October 19. Doors open at 6.30pm with boxing to begin at 7pm. MABC head trainer Paddy McLean has promised a good night of boxing. “I am hoping to see everyone come out and support the club and I look forward to seeing you there,” he said. Ringside tickets are $20, $15 for adults while $5 tickets are available for pensioners and Under 12s.

Champion of champions

The Mareeba Golf Club wishes Darrin Hastie all the best at the 2013 Queensland Champion of Champions event this week at Pacific Harbor Golf Course on the Sunshine Coast. Darrin is representing the FNQ Region as the FNQ Champion of Champions Winner and has been provided with assistance to attend by the FNQ Golf Association, Mareeba GC and its members.

By Ryan Groube Mareeba Golf Club has made a roaring start to the 2013 FNQ Men’s Inter Club Pennants registering five wins from their first six matches across three grades. A Grade and C Grade qualified for the semifinals at the weekend by defeating Mossman Golf Club in Gordonvale on Sunday. B Grade will need to defeat Paradise Palms in Atherton on Sunday to progress after suffering their first loss of the tournament at the weekend. Held over five weeks, the Pennants sees teams of five golfers from clubs across the far north go head to head in a match play tournament. Each team member is ranked one to five, based on their handicap, and faces of against

their opponent. If a player wins a hole they go “one up” the person who is ahead after 18 holes is the winner. The team with the most winners takes the match. Teams are separated into two pools of four teams who play off for two spots in the finals. The semi-finals this year will be held at the Mareeba Golf Club on October 27. On October 6, the first round of the competition saw Mareeba travel face off against Southern Districts with all grades winning. Mareeba’s A Grade team is made up of Paul O’Shea, Steve Cadorin, Robbie Pitt (with Darren Hastie filling in at the weekend), Anthony Mete and Louie Dezen. B Grade, pictured, includes Bruce Gilmore, Mark Bestmann, Tim Lambert (absent), John Shearer and Greg Broesder.

Michael Blunt, Chris Hogarth, Colin Back, Brian Callow and Russell Wicks make up the C Grade team. B Grade captain Bruce Gilmore said the Pennants were one of the biggest and most prestigious trophies in the far north. “It is one of the biggest events we have during the year,” he said. “There are big bragging rights up for grabs particularly for some of the smaller clubs it give us a chance to be giant killers. “The Cairns clubs usually have 18-20 blokes to choose from in each division whereas up here we scratch together four or five guys and try and knock them off.” Bruce said he was hoping his team will rebound this weekend to ensure each Mareeba team gets to play in a home semi-final.

All sorts to wet a line at Barra Bash By Ryan Groube whether an old-hand at seven or a late bloomer from interstate, this weekend’s Barra Bash at Lake Tinaroo will attract a diverse range of anglers all looking to land the big one. The annual event, run by the Tableland Fish Stocking Society, is a three-day fishing competition with a prize pool of more than $10,000 up for grabs. Competition fishing begins at 5.30pm on October 18, through Saturday with ‘stop fishing’ called at 10am Sunday. Weigh-in finishes at 11am with presentations in all divisions to begin just after noon. Charlotte Moller, a seven year old from Gordonvale, has been fishing at the event with her Dad Shane since she was old enough to hold a rod. Last year, as a six-year-old weighing 22 kilograms, Charlotte reeled in a 25.15 kilogram Barramundi at Lake Tinaroo which secured her a International Game Fish Association female small fry world record. Charlotte said landing the monster had been “very hard” but that she hoped to catch a bigger one this weekend. “My Dad taught me that the golden rule of fishing is not to panic,” she said. “When I hooked it he told me what to do and I did it straight away and that is how I pulled it in. “It is a good sport finishing. It is what my Dad likes to do and I like my Dad.” Tableland pharmacist Mark Hope didn’t become a regular angler until he moved to the far north from New South Wales. Today, Mark is ranked number five in the world for fresh water fishing and is the holder of seven world records, with a further two pending. The fishing bug has bitten so hard, he has also tacked on a tackle shop, World Record Barra Tackle, onto his pharmacy at Yungaburra.

Charlotte Moller wets a line at Lake Tinaroo, inset, Mark Hope with a mould of his world record breaking catch from 2011 and inset bottom, Charlotte with her world record fish

“I didn’t really ever chase fish until my pharmacy bought me up here,” he said. “I was a bit bored one day and I hadn’t been barra fishing before so I went fishing out at Yungaburra hoping to catch my first one. “That first trip we didn’t catch anything but I really enjoyed it and I have just kept getting better at it.” Mark plans to take his father out on the water for the Barra Bash this weekend but said he will only fish for a couple of hours and won’t be chasing any of the major prizes this year. “This year I am just going to enter to spend a

couple of hours out on the water with Dad,” he said. “We are just going to have a relaxed day in what is a lovely environment and see if we can’t hook anything.” The Tableland Fish Stocking Society runs the event each year to encourage people to purchase Stocked Impounded Permits of which a portion is returned to the group to purchase fish to stock Lake Tinaroo. It is also used to monitor the fish population in Lake Tinaroo and to fund a hatchery. The society has recently stocked 3200 fish, between 200 to 250mm in size into the Severin

Arm of Tinaroo, bringing the annual intake this year to about 10,000. Information for competitors: Only two fish may be taken per angler all fish will be weighed whole any Barramundi taken must exceed 56cm a lucky door prize of $10,000 will be selected from Adult nomination form purchasers no fish may be moved from one catchment to another please clean up after yourselves and keep the bank and waterway clear of rubbish

Cracking start for juniors By Ryan Groube

Adam Howarth and Garry Parker try their hand at archery on Sunday

Archery club hosts Sporting Wheelies Tableland Company of Archers hosted a handful of Sporting Wheelies on Sunday as they tried their hand at archery. Sporting Wheelies is Queensland’s peak body for sport, recreation and fitness for people with a physical disability or vision impairment. Garry Parker, Adam Howarth and Bob Moore had all shot with TCoA before. For Jasmine Manning and Christine Wolf, Sunday was the first time they had fired an arrow. Christine, a gold medal winning Paralympian in the long jump, organised Sunday’s trip to the Tableland. “Sporting Wheelies is all about connecting people with a disability to sport,” she said. “We try and do all sorts of come and try days like today at least once a month.”

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

The group underwent instruction from TCoA head coach George Neilson prior to a shoot off. “Today we are just hoping to give them some confidence and a sence of archery,” he said. “Once they all feel confident enough we’ll have a shoot off. “Archery is a Paralympic sport and if any of them get good enough there is the pathway for them to go right through but if they want to do it for a bit of fun then that is fine as well.” As for the early favourite to take out the shoot out was Bob who was dubbed by Adam as “Bobby of Sherwood Forest”. Bob dealt with the expectation to win the shoot with 101 points from Adam on 86 points and Garry one point back on 85.

Mareeba’s junior cricketers are off to a flyer in season 2013-14, dominating in all grades. The Mareeba Bad Boys Under 12s travelled to Port Douglas to face the Muddies in their opening one-day game for the year. Mossman/Port Douglas batted first and were rolled for 98 with Milan Quintieri doing the damage with the ball claiming figures of three wickets for two runs off two overs. Lane Hanush and Jett Prien anchored the Bad Boys batting innings, registering scores of 46 and 22, as Mareeba coasted to a comfortable first up win. The Mareeba Blue Under 14s hosted the Mossman/ Port Douglas Muddies at Borzi Park on Saturday. Batting first Luke Lamborne (26) and Lachlan Ford (24) led the way for Mareeba as they made a competitive 130 off their 32 overs. Fielding a young side with a number of 11-yearolds, Mareeba Blue were ruthless in the field, bowling the Muddies out for 62. Braydon Olufson (11) and Daniel Prien (11) both took their first wickets in the Under 14s competition. Under 14s coach Bomber Adams said Lachlan Palmer, another 11 year old as well as fellow youngster Luke Russo were outstanding for the team. “Lachlan more than held his own against the older boys and Luke Russo was brilliant in the field - he is a real pocket rocket,” Bomber said. “The bowlers shared the wickets around so I just wanted to mention those guys who were playing in thier first Under 14s game.” Mareeba’s Under 16s are also on top after the first day of their two-day clash against Cairns Rovers at Kerribee Park. Batting first, Mareeba compiled 159 runs for the loss of seven wickets from their 42 overs with Ethan McCulloch top scoring with 45. off four overs saw Rovers collapse to be all out for 76. “We will be looking for an outright victory in that game next week,” Bomber said. The Mareeba Bandits C Grade side also played at the weekend, hosting Norths at Kerribee Park for the second leg of their two-day game. Defending a huge first innings of 282, the Bandits rolled Norths for 48. Robert Wallace was the chief destroyer for the Bandits taking three for 17 off six overs as Rovers barely survived until after the first drinks break. Enforcing the follow-on in a bid for an outright victory, saw Rovers batsman shut up shop and block out the rest of the day. The game ended with Rovers at four for 111 with the Bandits claiming first innings points.
