Testing time for wind farm By Ryan Groube

I

t has been more than two years since papers were lodged with the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) for a proposed $500 million wind farm on the Mt Emerald Range, and now 2014 is looming as a critical year for the project. Ratch Australia, a Thai-owned power company, is the major shareholder in the Mt Emerald Wind Farm project, which would involve the establishment of up to 75 three-

megawatt turbines capable of generating power for 75,000 homes. Nearby residents are concerned the development will drive down the value of their properties and impact on their health and lifestyle. Wind Turbine Action, an active and wellorganised group of objecting residents, has successfully kept its concerns about the wind farm in the media and has also lobbied governments in a bid to halt the development. The final decision will rest with the untested

Mareeba Shire Council (MSC), which inherited the development application after the deamalgamation with the TRC came into effect on January 1 this year. Council is awaiting a response to an information request made to the developers for additional technical data about the project. The information is critical to planners being able to properly assess the application. The developers have until April 28 to respond. Upon receiving the information, council has 20 business days to approve or reject

Tiny arrivals make for big tally at ward By Ryan Groube Not since 2004 has Mareeba Hospital’s maternity ward welcomed so many new arrivals, with 189 births in 2013. Already 2014 is off to a roaring start with the service delivering 18 babies so far in January, well above last year’s average of 16 births each month. Cameron Richardson and Shenee Robinson are among the cohort of new parents to welcome their child into the world at the Mareeba Hospital in 2014. Ms Robinson gave birth to the couple’s first child, a beautiful girl Sophia Joy Richardson, at 1.47am on January 16. However after developing a fever the youngster was placed on a drip and the couple had to stay in hospital until January 23. In an interview with The Express, which was repeatedly interrupted by people ducking into the suite to say “Oh, she’s so beautiful”, the couple said having

a maternity ward in Mareeba was an invaluable asset. “She is very happy and now she is very healthy and we are excited to have her here now,” Mr Richardson said. “With work I wouldn’t have been able to stay in Cairns the whole time and it would have been a long way to go every day. “Everyone has been great; anything that we needed they (the staff) helped us out with.” Prior to being discharged the couple, who have been together for four years, joked that young Sophia desperately needed some time outside. “The only time we’ve got to go outside was for a fire drill so it will be good to get her home,” Mr Richardson laughed. When not dealing with sleepless nights Mr Richardson said it was about time he “pulled my finger out” and popped the question to Ms Robinson. Mareeba Hospital midwifery and

Shenee Robinson and Cameron Richardson show off their first child, daughter Sophia Joy Richardson nurse unit manager Sandra Eales said birth numbers at the hospital had been increasing since 2010. “We were steadily busy throughout the year and we got close to 200 births for the year,” she said. October was the busiest month for

births in 2013 with 21 babies born. There were no triplets or twins born at the Mareeba Hospital last year. The busiest year on record at the maternity ward was 1998 with 228 births while 2010 was the most quiet year, with 125 births - an average of 10 a month.

Former Mareeba State High School student Anisah Ali-Allen with her letter of acceptance to JCU Cairns.

The release of first round of university placement offers on January 16 has Tableland students packing up and preparing to head off into the wide world of tertiary education. About 37,000 offers were made to Queensland students in the first round, with former Mareeba State High School students Anisah AliAllen, Zeljko Higby and Lisa Nastasi among them. Mareeba girls Anisah and Lisa, both 17, were lucky enough to be offered their first choice of course and institution. Anisah was offered a Bachelor of Laws placement at James Cook University’s (JCU) Cairns campus, while Lisa will be studying a veterinary science course at JCU Townsville. Zeljko, also 17, was offered his second preference, a Bachelor of Geology at JCU Townsville. Both Anisah and Zeljko will

be deferring their studies for six months. Each of the students said they were excited to enter the next stage of education. Anisah said she was looking forward to making new friends outside her hometown. “I think it’s going to be a very good opportunity to meet new people and branch out of Mareeba,” she said. “It’s hard to describe how I’m feeling – I’m excited but also nervous. “I look at it as the next chapter of my life.” Small-town boy Zeljko, from Dimbulah, was especially keen to get to the relatively big smoke of Townsville despite having to defer in order to take supplementary subjects. “I am pretty excited to leave,” he said. “I really want to get into it and don’t think it can come soon enough.” Anisah said she was deferring in

Lisa hoped to keep her studies on a roll by entering immediately. “I thought about taking a gap year but then I thought I may as well jump straight in,” she said. “Mum was worried I wouldn’t like to get back into studying after a year off so she pushed that way a little.” Lisa and Zeljko were split on whether or not they would return to their hometowns after university. “I would like to come back to Mareeba when I can and be the owner of my own vet clinic,” Lisa said. Zeljko had a much more global outlook, however. “My long term plan is to study, graduate, get a job, earn some money and travel the world,” he said. “If my work brings me back here than yes, I will return but there’s a lot out there to see.” University orientation weeks begin in late February.

Feasting geese leave mango crop in ruin By Boyd Robertson A BIBOOHRA mango farmer’s crop has been ravaged by a huge flock of magpie geese, costing him hundreds of thousands in lost produce. Sam Nastasi at Golden Pride Mango Farms at Biboohra said the vast flock of geese have already destroyed $300,000 worth of ripe mangoes from his fields since the beginning of the season. Arriving just after dawn and returning in the afternoons, the geese nibble at low-hanging mangoes as they scavenge the ground beneath each tree for fallen fruit. A single peck is enough to rupture the mango’s skin and render it unfit for sale, with the geese occasionally eating the bottom half of the fruit. The behaviour is considered completely out of character for the birds, which normally eat grass seeds. The change in diet seems to be quite recent, with magpie geese attacking mango crops en masse in Darwin in October 2012. Mr Nastasi said the birds caused about $10,000 of damage to his crops at the end of the previous season but this year have returned in full force with a taste for ripe mango. “There are massive flocks of them all the way through the rows, I’d estimate more than 50,000 birds – we are looking at options of dealing with them but the only thing we can do now is drive around scaring them off,” he said. “It’s not just affecting us – all of the farmers along Bilwon Road I’ve spoken to are having the same problems.” Neighbouring mango farmer Joe Moro is also being targeted by the geese and has lost “several thousand dollars” worth of fruit this season to the winged pests. Mr Nastasi said the losses are becoming a serious problem. “If it carries on the way it has it’s, we’re looking at very big losses,” he said. “Everyone is going to be affected – not just us but

everyone we deal with is going to get hit by this. “Our employees aren’t going to get that work now because of the lost produce, the guys we use for transport and logistics are going to have less cargo to move - it all goes down the chain.” Since magpie geese are a protected native species under the National Conservation Act, they are unlikely to be declared a pest. A Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP) spokesperson advised The Express that farmers can apply for a damage mitigation permit (DMP) if pests become a serious economic problem, with a lethal DMP allowing farmers to shoot the birds. The DEHP – responsible for most wildlife matters in Queensland – was completely stumped as to why the geese had began feeding on mangoes, with the spokesperson simply answering “no” when asked if there were any government explanations for the birds’ behaviour. Yungaburra wildlife guide and experienced birdwatcher Allan Gillanders was also taken aback when told about the geese’s change in diet. “They do eat a little fruit in the wild but their main diet is really that of a grazing duck so they will usually eat seeds, the shoots of young grass, tubers and young water lilies – things like that,” he said.

Biboohra mango farmer Sam Nastasi is not happy about losing $300,000 worth of his crop to hungry magpie geese (inset) this season.

Joint award for couple’s years of shared service

Don and Betty Hepple were named Citizens of the Year by the Tablelands Regional Council at its Australia Day Awards ceremony on Sunday.

By Boyd Robertson Mt Garnet couple Don and Betty Hepple were recognised as the Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) Citizens of the Year at council’s Australia Day Ceremony on Sunday. Held at the Atherton International Club, the ceremony also included Atherton teenager Elyna Overland being awarded Junior Citizen of the Year. Meanwhile, the Tablelands Branch of the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia was granted the Community Service Award for restoring the marker posts of various World War II-era Army units stationed on the Tableland. The Afghanistan Avenue of Honour Official Opening Ceremony in Yungaburra, which drew six thousand attendees, including then-Prime Minister Julia Gillard and then-Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, was recognised as the Community Event of the Year. The Development of Commerce and Industry Award was granted to the Tableland Futures Corporation and the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce. The Malanda Chamber of Commerce Riverine Sub-Committee picked up the Environmental Excellence Award, while Kurt Shephard was awarded Senior Sportsperson of the Year. Junior Sportsperson of the Year went to Wilson Todd, while the Sports Administrator Award winner was Helen Cotton. Lyn O’Connor was recognised

with the Quiet Achiever Award while Emily Williams received the Cultural Achievement Award. Mr and Ms Hepple received their Citizens of the Year Award after a lifetime of volunteering with various community organisations including the Mt Garnet Rural Fire Brigade, Mt Garnet Ambulance, Mt Garnet Rodeo, Mt Garnet Pony Club, and local postal service. They were described as “simple country folk without airs and graces” and as “legends” by TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long, although the Hepples themselves remained humble, saying they did not volunteer in exchange for awards. “We do all these things because we love doing them, not for medals,” Ms Hepple told the Express. President of the Tableland National Servicemen’s branch John Hardy said it was a great honour for he and his comrades to receive the Community Service Award. “Most of our members are rapidly approaching their eighties,” Mr Hardy said. “So our recent project of restoring the marker posts will likely be their last because retirement is probably the next thing for them. “We are pretty chuffed to receive this recognition from the Tableland community and we would like to thank the people that contributed along with all the other community service groups out there that are working so hard without recognition.”

Wind farm a threat to jobs, say lobbyists By Ryan Groube

Jack Krikorian and Jenny Disley operate a business less than two kilometres from the proposed Mt Emerald Wind Farm site.

JACK Krikorian and Jenny Disley live 1800 metres from the proposed Mt Emerald Wind Farm site and are active and vocal objectors to the development. The couple run a farm hire business, Walkamin Enterprises, at Channel Road, and can have as many as 40 foreign workers staying at three boarding houses on their property at any one time. Workers at the property are employed by Mr Krikorian and Ms Disley on their pineapple, tea tree and lettuce farm as well neighbouring farms, predominately in the Arriga and Walkamin area. They are worried if the development goes ahead the noise and visual impacts will “severely impact” their ability to run their business and will destroy the idyllic lifestyle of the close-knit community. “There are many, not just us, who imagine that we may have to shut the doors if this goes ahead,” Ms Disley

said. “There have been surveys at other wind farm sites that show that people are being affected (by wind farms) 17 kilometres away; we have workers on paddocks less than 1.8 kilometres away. “We provide workers to all the banana farms in this area and it is an essential service to this community.” The couple are both members of lobby group Wind Turbine Action, which has collected a petition of about 4000 signatures from people objecting to the development. Mr Krikorian said residents had felt as though they had been backed into a corner by developers and had little recourse to formally object to the development. “We know everyone in this community, it’s a great little community, and we’ve been backed into a corner,” he said. “This (property) is our playground, it is where we want to live and where all of our friends are so of course we have reasons for angst.”

Turbine battle set to heat up in 2014 continued from page 1 Ratch Australia’s Geoff Dutton and Anil Nangia gave council a 30-minute overview on the benefits of the development. Mr Nangia said the project would result in $70 million spent in the region during construction and would require a workforce of 250 at its peak, with about 90 jobs expected to be sourced from the Tableland. Once operational, the project would have a yearly operational spend of $6 million and will support 16 jobs. A community funding

planning scheme was adopted, the council at the time had never anticipated having to deal with a major commercial wind farm of the size of the Mt Emerald development. As a result, the paperwork was filed as a “public utility” – which encompasses developments such as water and sewerage infrastructure, and is code assessable, not impact assessable. If the development had been impact assessable, council would be able to formally seek submissions for and against the project.

Mt Emerald Wind Farm development timeline August 12, 2011: Material change of use application for the establishment of a 75-turbine wind farm lodged to the Tablelands Regional Council by Mt Emerald Wind Farm Pty Ltd.

March 31, 2012: Developers hold a community consultation meeting about the project which led to the formation of opposition lobby group Wind Turbine Action.

August 26, 2011: TRC notifies the applicants that the documents were “not properly made” on the basis of a technicality.

May 1, 2012: TRC lodges an information request with the applicants seeking further information that staff considered necessary to properly assess the application.

October 7, 2011: The TRC adopt a Temporary Local Planning Instrument due to inadequate provisions with the Mareeba Shire Council planning scheme to assess the application. March 29, 2012: The application for the Mt Emerald Wind Farm was deemed to be properly made.

October 12, 2012: TRC grants a request from the applicants for an extension to the response period for the information request until October 28, 2013. September 19, 2013: The TRC grant a further extension for the information until April 28, 2014.

Is your garden looking a bit daggy? Is your native garden looking a bit sparse and daggy? … lacking vigour and vitality? … then FERTILISE! Yes, you CAN fertilise native plants! And it will spruce up your garden and put that old ‘zing’ back into your plants. Native plants, like all plants, appreciate some fertiliser and a bit of oldfashioned tender loving care from time to time. However, you do need to be careful about what type of fertiliser you apply to your native garden. Australian soils are (on the whole) low in phosphorous, and so Australian native plants have adapted to the low phosphorous environment by becoming super-efficient at absorbing phosphorous in order to meet their needs. Hence, if you apply too much phosphorous, the plant will absorb too much and literally poison itself. A bit like taking too much medicine at once. So, when you fertilise native plants you need to use a fertiliser with a low phosphorous content. Read the label on the packet, and make sure that the phosphorous (P) level is no more than 3%. Avoid using most farm fertilisers, since these are designed for farm crops (such as potatoes, maize, mangos etc) which are of course not native plants and hence usually have a phosphorous content which is too high for natives. However, if you buy a fertiliser especially for natives, you can safely apply it to all the other plants in your garden. It’s the natives that are fussy, not the exotics. Once you’ve checked that the P level is safe (ie 3% or less), it’s really up to you whether you go organic or opt for a chemical fertiliser. However, if it is ‘zing’ that you are after, then you will need a reasonable level of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) to produce an effect. Nitrogen will green your plants up and make them grow. Potassium will add colour and vibrance to the new growth. Potassium levels of about 13-17% will produce good results without being too strong. Just remember that, while too little may not have any effect, too much can kill your plants. So bearing this in mind, scatter the fertiliser lightly all through your garden bed. Don’t dump handfuls of raw fertiliser around the roots, as this will likely result in toxicity and death. So go for it, and fertilise now while the rain is around! For more information, go to the Yuruga Information Sheet “Fertilising Native Plants” available from our website www.yuruga.com.au or at the nursery.

See you at Yuruga. Happy planting (and fertilising)!

New Mareeba State High School Year 12 students Belinda Grundling, Kiarna La Rosa, Teagan Abdy and Haydan Bonaccorsi.

Seniors under the pump as school year kicks off By Boyd Robertson School is back for the Tableland’s kids and the pressure is on – particularly for the newest batch of Year 12 students who must now steel themselves for two final semesters before entering the outside world. Mareeba State High School (MSHS) has 124 students signed on for Year 12, and they will face challenges like the daunting Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test, leadership roles, brutal endof-term exams and the logistics of organising formal dates and Schoolies accommodation – all while balancing school studies, part-time work and social life. The Express spoke to new Mareeba State High School senior students Teagan Abdy, Kiarna La Rosa, Belinda Grundling and Haydan Bonaccorsi, all 16, on how they felt about entering their final year of schooling. The group, who will share an English class through Year 12, described themselves as “excited but nervous”. “You can really feel the pressure this time around,” said Teagan. “We’re going to be seniors

now and having the younger kids looking to us for guidance is going to be pretty weird considering we were in their position a while ago.” For Belinda, who aspires to be a physiotherapist, one of the more worrying items on the horizon is the QCS test, which determines a significant chunk of a student’s Overall Position (OP). “It’s a bit stupid to have pretty much your whole career decided in one test,” she said. “We’ve all heard plenty of

equal grounds with the teachers and having conversations with them as adults instead of children. “Plus halfway through the year everyone starts getting their P Plates so there’s going to be lots of driving around suddenly.” A unique aspect of this new generation of students is how far back their planning stretches – plenty of the girls have had formal dates picked out since primary school and Haydan said he was not alone in having already

horror stories about the exams as well – I know I’m going to have to work my butt off this year.” It’s not all doom and gloom, however - Kiarna said the thing she was most excited about for Year 12 was the end-of-year social events. “I am really keen for the formal and scavenger hunt,” she said. “Another thing that’s going to be interesting, I think, is how we’re going to be getting on more

Despite the trials ahead of them, however, the group is still positive in their outlook. “I’m definitely keen,” said Haydan. “It’s going to be deece.”

Future of old fire station unclear By Ryan Groube A long-awaited new fire station in Mareeba is due to open next month but the fate of the old facility in Byrnes Street remains unclear. The State Government has written to the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) asking for input on the future use of the 126 Byrnes Street station. At its January 15 ordinary meeting, the MSC resolved to reply to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines and request more time to make a decision. Council has requested the department should be the “trustee of the proposed reserve until such time as

council has confirmed its future plans for the land”. The report cited some preliminary options for the land. “Notwithstanding the business zoning, council’s internal consultation process has established that the location of the subject land has high strategic value as public open space that would permit extension of the Anzac Park...,” the report said. “Councillors and officers have previously considered the possibility of converting the existing fire station building into a bus transit centre.” Construction of the new Mareeba Fire Station at Centenary Park, Mareeba is almost complete with operations to begin there in February.

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

sees outside - if her eyes could speak - tells us he is well satisfied by the description. Michael Petroni's adaptation of Markus Zusak's potent novel is filled with such descriptive moments in this keenly observed tale about books, words and humanity set on a backdrop of WWII's Nazi Germany. Director Brian Percival has woven a masterful tale about life, made all the more effective by the fact that it is narrated by the supercilious voice of death. The film begins in February 1938 with a train ride that ends in a death. It is at the gravesite in the dense snow that Liesel intuitively picks up a book that has been left behind - even though she cannot read. The book is the first bond between Liesel and her new adoptive father Hans (Geoffrey Rush) and the establishment of a wall-dictionary in the basement to help her learn new words, is the beginning of Liesel's love affair with words. Rush brings great compassion to the role of Hans Hubermann, the gentle man with a sense of humanity, who plays an accordion that was not always his. Emily Watson is formidable as Hans' thunderstorm-like wife Rosa, who is all growl, scowl and no bite. The other key characters are Rudy (Nico Liersch, exceptional), the angel-faced blond boy who wants to kiss Liesel and Max the Jew (Schnetzer), who is nursed back to life by food, love and the words from books that Liesel surreptitiously borrows. Schnetzer underplays Max beautifully and the scene in which Max and Liesel read imaginary letters by Adolf Hitler's Humour is integrated naturally into the drama, offering light relief in the context of a film in which tension and life and death issues play a large role. This is a beautiful story superbly brought to the screen with a heart as warm as the snow is cold.

It's a huge week at The Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba, with two spectacular new movies on screen and a once off Sunday Super Sale. THE RAILWAY MAN, based on a true story and starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, premieres with a gala cheese and wine event this Friday at 6pm. It's an epic story with top notch performances from the two leads. Also starting this week is the acclaimed THE BOOK THIEF, with Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson. THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY and the dramatic WALKING WITH DINOSAURS continue for a second great week. Dinosaurs is to be recommended for it's incredible graphics and a lovely story of success against the odds as well. On Sunday, February 2 , there is a one off SUPER SUNDAY SALE, featuring a whole host of movies. Starting at 10.45am, it's only $5 a ticket. So make the most of seeing some great movies at this low once off special deal. If you have not yet been to The Rising Sun, this is a great opportunity to try it.

THE BOOK THIEF

When young Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) is sent away to live with adoptive parents Rosa (Emily Watson) and Hans (Geoffrey Rush) in a small German town during the war, she befriends Rudy (Nico Liersch) a boy her own age. Just as she learns to read for the first time, thanks to Hans, a young Jewish man, Max, (Ben Schnetzer), turns up seeking refuge and is hidden in the cellar. Here, Liesel reads to Max, who encourages her to read and also to write. Inevitably, the war disrupts this arrangement - and indeed, Liesel's whole life. Review by Louise Keller: There is a pivotal scene in which Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) describes the sun as a silver oyster to Max (Ben Schnetzer), the Jewish refugee hidden in the basement. It has been a long time since he has seen the world outside and the expression on his face when he asks the young girl to describe what she

THE RAILWAY MAN

English soldier and railway enthusiast Eric Lomax (Colin Firth) is captured among the thousands of Allied prisoners after the 1942 fall of Singapore in World War II and forced to work on building the ThaiBurma railway. When a secret

radio receiver he builds with fellow prisoners is discovered, he is severely beaten and tortured, leaving him traumatised for many years. Years later, in 1980, on one of his many rail journeys in England, he meets Patti (Nicole Kidman) and they fall in love but his ongoing nightmares and his refusal to speak about his torment impact on her, and their otherwise loving marriage. Patti is determined to help Eric slay his demons, and with help from army friend Finlay (Stellan Skarsgaard), they discover that the young Japanese soldier who was one of his torturers is very much alive, working as a tour guide at the railway museum. (Based on a true story.) Review by Andrew L. Urban: As moving as The King's Speech (not least due to Colin Firth's emotionally minimalist but powerful stiff upper lip characterisation) and as beautifully made, Jonathan Teplitzky's film of Eric Lomax's memoir - as written for the screen by Frank Cottrell Boyce and Andy Paterson - is stunning cinema. Here is an opportunity for you to purchase what the current owners thought was the best of the Rayfield blocks - regrettably they have to part with it. The big plus points are that it is at the end of a no-through road, it faces the north, it already has a one neighbour, so there is a fence on that side and there still is a vacant block on the other side if you wanted a double. As you probably already know at Rayfield, land comes with the town water hooked up and there is a bore hole as well. Take a drive to see for yourself and let me know what you think. Memoriam In loving Memories of Antonio Mete, 30/01/2007 and Maria Mete, 30/01/2009.

Australia Day races a hit The Mareeba Turf Club’s Australia Day Races were a big hit this year with more than 500 people turning out to see fast-paced action on the track and the glamorous Fashions on the Field. Club secretary John Thurlow said the day had been very successful and well-enjoyed. “Everyone had themselves a great time, there really

wasn’t much to complain about,” he said. “The weather was good and we had great competition – hopefully we can top it this time next year for an even better races.” The Express was on hand to snap the hottest outfits – check out our Facebook page for more.

Rhee Tae Kwon Do has been established in Mareeba and the Tablelands for over 30 years seeing many families and friends train together disciplining the body and mind while learning the art of selfdefence. Other benefits gained include improved coordination, concentration and fitness. All fitness levels are encouraged to come along. Rhee Tae Kwon Do is an activity the whole family can do together and offer special packages for Families.

Classes are held on Monday and Thursday nights from 6.307.30pm at the old Mareeba Shire Hall (PCYC Hall) behind Mitre 10 in Walsh Street, Mareeba. Squad in state sprint comp By Boyd Robertson Mareeba Swimming Club will send away a talented squad of young swimmers to the Queensland Sate Sprint Championships in Brisbane on February 8. The squad is mainly a family affair with standout brothers Liam and Bradley Newlands along with sibling powerhouses Josh, Nicole and Michael Theakston making up the bulk of numbers. Mary Turner rounds out the squad, while other members Josh Priestly and Nadia Falvo also qualified to attend but are unable to attend due to other commitments. The team are the qualifying members of a 12-strong Mareeba Swimming Club squad (pictured) sent to the Marlin Coast Twilight Sprint Meet in Cairns on January 25. Coach June Cotter said the members of the state finals squad had performed excellently at the Marlin Coast competition. “Nicole Theakston in particular took eight seconds off her personal best for 50m butterfly, which is just incredible,” she said.

Cotter added that the entire swim team had battled disadvantageous conditions to reach the qualifying meet. “Many of the other clubs especially on the coast have indoor heated pools, which allows their teams to train all year round,” she said. “We don’t have a heated pool - so our team really only had about six months to prepare for these competitions. “All the members of the squad

have had to work really hard to qualify.” Despite the handicap Cotter said she was confident in the squad. “I definitely think Josh Theakston will make a final in backstroke or freestyle and Nicole might definitely surprise us,” she said. “While we’d love to have a finalist, as long as they bring back personal bests for their efforts at the finals we’ll know they’ve done their best and it will be excellent.”

New Gators committee The Mareeba Gladiators have welcomed in a new larger committee for 2014, with John Arcidiacono remaining on as club president. All the previous committee members elected not to return to their positions after the successful 2013 season, but the AGM held in November last year

failed to uncover any new prospective members. A second AGM held in December resulted in the appointment of Andrew Foster as treasurer and Barbara Henning as secretary with Harry Phillott, Tua Aue, Sione Takapu and Alo Toomalatai as general committee members.

Arcidacono said the larger committee, which recently held its first meeting, would help spread ancillary duties like cleaning facilities, running the bar and marking fields. “It’s going to be good to have extra guys this year because it will free up more time for the executive to make club deci-

sions,” he said. “Our whole job is to make it possible and easy for the players to play for their club and represent their town so that’s what we’ll be setting out to do this year.” Mareeba Mazda and Mareeba Mitsubishi has signed on as a club sponsor for the first time.

Futsal club players improve at finals By Boyd Robertson Tableland Futsal Club players have returned home from state and national Federated Football Australia (FFA) finals in January with vastly improved results. The club sent a Under 10 boys side to the state-level Craig Foster Cup in Brisbane, in addition to contributing players to representative sides that competed at national finals at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra over the week of January 13-19. The Under 10s side returned after making the semi-finals and placing fourth against elite-level competition at the Craig Foster Cup, smashing their previous achievement of placing second to last in 2013. Club member Neil Alterio was the only Tableland player on the Under 13’s Queensland country side, which achieved a placement of third at the national competition. The Under 14’s side performed excellently but faced skilled opposition and was unable to

make the finals. Local player Theresa Barletta had an outstanding tournament at the national finals as part of the Queensland Youth Ladies team (which was coached by Tableland Futsal Club president Nigel Marwick) but her team was stopped in the semi-finals by a Gold Coast side that went on to win the grand final. Club vice president Peter Ius accompanied the Tableland Under 10s team to the Craig Foster Cup as coach and said all the players0 had done the club proud. “We’re really happy with the performance of the kids,” he said. “Considering what we accomplished this year compared to last year, at this rate we will have a team in the finals next year. “Part of the club’s philosophy is to give kids the chance to participate in state and national level events and I believe the kids we raise and train up here are good enough no only to go away to big meets but also excel.”

Norths top undermanned Bandits By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Bandits have been narrowly defeated by Norths in a tense oneday game in Cairns on Sunday, going down by only two runs. The Bandits were critically undermanned, with five players away at the Goldfield Ashes in Charters Towers for the weekend. Mareeba won the toss and went into bowl, with Norths reaching their 30 overs on five wickets for 119 runs. Deficient batting saw meant the Ban-

dits fell two runs short of their opponents on five for 117, despite excellent work by batsman Brendan Paine (pictued). Trevor Roy was caught out on 21 runs, ending the game in favour of Norths. Roy and youngster Kodee Shannon were the Bandits’ outstanding batsmen for the day on two wickets for 22 runs and two wickets for 23 runs, respectively. Bandits spokesman Danny Shaw said the team took the loss on the chin and would return fully rostered and in better form when playing in Tully on Sunday. “You can’t win them all,” he said.
