areeba’s Bulls and Gladiators have covered themselves in premiership glory during a bumper weekend of sport in the far north.

On Saturday night, the Bulls Reserves flogged the Marlin Coast Rangers 7-0 in the Far North Queensland Football grand final at Endeavour Park.

Less than 24 hours later, the Mareeba Gladiators ended a 22 year hoodoo to claim the Cairns and District Rugby League (CDRL) ‘A Reserve’ premiership by defeating the Yarrabah Seahawks 54-20.

The weekend also saw the running of Mareeba’s biggest race meeting – the Mareeba Annuals – with more than 1500 people stepping out in their finest.

Innisfail horse trainer Stephen Potiris claimed his first Mareeba Cup with six-year-old mare Skitter taking the prestigious $8000 race by a length and a half.

On Saturday afternoon, the Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association officially opened its new $200,000 club house at Loder Park after a day of finals.

On the pitch, a solitary goal from Deana Nasser was enough to propel Waterloo to a 1-0 upset victory over the Plastered Vets in the Veteran Ladies division. Later that evening, the Atherton Roosters named Stephen Crear as their player of the year at the club’s presentation night.

Crear has been with the Roosters since Under 7s and in his second year in the top flight became an invaluable defensive workhouse in the middle of the park.

The night before, ‘Gators captain-coach Rod Jensen was named the shared winner of the CDRL’s Gold Medal while Alessia Aloia was named Miss CDRL.

Grandmother takes on 334km bike ride

Debbie Jerome gets geared up for the bike ride of a lifetime.

By Ryan Groube A Mareeba grandmother will undertake “the biggest physical challenge” of her life at the weekend in a bid to repay the people who saved her husband.

In June, 2012 Raymond Jerome had a heart attack and was rushed to the Cardiology Department at Cairns Base Hospital where he was stabilised and made a slow but full recovery.

By his side, Mr Jerome’s wife Debbie saw a poster promoting the Cardiac Challenge, a 334 kilometre bike ride from Cairns to Cooktown used as a fundraiser for the Cardiology Department.

“It [the ride] looked like fun and it looked like a challenge but mostly I wanted to do it to say thank you to the people who saved my husband’s life,” she said.

“Without them my husband wouldn’t be here.

They did an excellent job and I just wanted to be able to help out.”

Despite having never ridden a bike in any events, Mrs Jerome has been slowly building up her fitness since receiving a mountain bike for Christmas in 2012.

The first organised cycling event she participated in was the Lindsay Cook Memorial Ride, a relatively easy 25 kilometre ride from Tolga to Rocky Creek and back, in April.

Since then, Mrs Jerome – who is a school bus driver for St Stephen’s Catholic College – has been making regular trips up Lake Morris Road to Cop-

“You start thinking I’ll just ride 20 kilometres, and then you get to 30 then to 50 and now I can do 80 kilometres in a day and not feel too bad,” she said.

The 52-year-old, however, is under no illusions how big a challenge the ride to Cooktown will be.

“They recommend that to be ready for this ride you need to be doing between 30 and 50 kilometres each day and 100 kilometres on the weekend but [with a job and a family] I am not even close to doing that,” she said.

“I have a lot of determination to do this and I will give it everything I have [to finish] but I am sure I will be cursing myself on some of the hills.”

Mr Jerome and one of the couple’s four children, Kristy-Leigh, will travel with Debbie as her support crew.

Joining Mrs Jerome on the ride is cardiologist Greg Starmer who treated Raymond when he was admitted. Dr Starmer is the son of former TGT manager Lex and the brother of Northern Pride front rower, and sometimes Mareeba Gladiator, Alex.

The Cardiac Challenge starts in Cairns on September 21, with the peloton stopping for a brief morning tea in Mareeba before heading to Mt Molloy for lunch and finally to Mt Carbine to end the 135 kilometre first stage.

The event concludes in Cooktown on September 23. Organisers are hoping to raise $350,000 for the Cardiology Department this year.

Lodge donates chairs for bedridden patients

Residents at Carinya Home for the Aged in Atherton will be getting around easier thanks to special chairs provided by the Atherton Masonic Lodge.

The ‘regency chairs’, as they are called, resemble mobile hospital beds and are designed for bedridden patients.

The lodge raised more than $2,500, which was matched dollar-for-dollar

by Masonic Benevolence for a total of $5,000, to pay for the chairs, which were received by Carinya on September 6.

The chairs are just two among many specialised pieces of equipment donated by the lodge to Carinya over the past five years, including hoists and shower chairs.

Helen Fletcher, a clinical nurse consultant at Carinya, said the chairs were greatly appreciated and would make things easier for both staff and residents.

“We are very appreciative of this help – our job would be a lot harder without this equipment because like many other aged care facilities we are non-handling,

which means we can’t move patients around with our bare hands,” Ms Fletcher said.

“The chairs are pressure-relieving which means we can put immobile residents in them to avoid the effects of having them lay still on a hard surface for too long.

“They are really like mobile hospital beds because they can be laid flat, propped up, moved around and the sides can come down to help us get the residents in and out of them – it also means they can get around out to the gardens with their families when they visit.”

Atherton Masonic Lodge member Les Simpson was instrumental in running the garage sales that funded the chairs.

“The support from the public is fantastic for Carinya,” he said.

“We have previously raised money for equipment for the hospital but we have found that there is a real interest in supporting aged care in Atherton.”

The Atherton lodge will be holding another sale on October 12.

Crackdown on cruelty

A police investigation into the treatment of a puppy found starved and ridden with disease is nearing its third month as the State Government announced a major crackdown on animal cruelty offenders.

On June 26, police seized a malnourished seven-month-old Dane cross Bull Arab puppy from a Mareeba residence and surrendered it to Mareeba Animal Refuge for care.

Since then, ‘Roger Ramjet’ has been treated for mange, fleas and hookworm and has put on five kilograms – yet remains short of his ideal weight.

Last week, the State Government passed changes which will allow courts to impose heavier penalties on animal cruelty offenders.

The changes double the maximum fine for animal cruelty offences from $110,000 to $220,000 and the maximum term of imprisonment from two to three years.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said an amendment to the Animal Care and Protection Act bought punishment for these offences in line with community expectation.

“The relatively low penalties applied to animal cruelty offenders by the courts have been the subject of public criticism for several years,” Mr McVeigh said. “These changes acknowledge that acts of cruelty to animals are abhorrent and that the community expects much tougher penalties to be given to perpetrators of these acts.”

Mareeba Animal Refuge manager Jennifer Walsh said when ‘Roger Ramjet’ first arrived at the refuge he was nothing more than “skin and bone”.

Ms Walsh said sadly it wasn’t an isolated case on the Tableland.

“A lot of the dogs when they come into the refuge have obviously been beaten and are very scared. We have just found a home for a bull mastiff that had been treated so badly it had cigarette burns on its skin,” she said.

Ms Walsh said she hoped a loving family would be willing to rehome ‘Roger Ramjet’.

As of deadline, no charges had been laid in relation to the case.

CLAIMS made by Bob Katter that the Liberal National Party ran a multi-million dollar campaign to unseat him have been ridiculed by the LNP. An LNP spokesperson told The Express that although final advertising costs were still being collated, the parties Kennedy campaign would come in at about $200,000.

The day after the September 7 election, Mr Katter claimed a $1 million dollar advertising campaign was to blame for a staggering collapse in his primary vote.

The LNP’s candidate Noeline Ikin received over 40 per cent of the primary vote while Mr Katter took just under 30 per cent - down from almost 50 per cent in 2010.

Despite a swing of more than 16 per cent to the LNP, Mr Katter has retained the seat of Kennedy with Ms Ikin calling to concede on Saturday night.

Since the election, Mr Katter’s estimates of the costs of the LNP’s campaign have risen steadily leading to him claiming on ABC Radio that up to $10 million had been spent trying to “stamp out” his fledgling Katter’s Australian Party.

The LNP maintain that “no more was spent in Kennedy than any other seat” for their overall campaign while that their advertising budget in the seat was “a fraction compared to some seats in southwest Queensland”.

The LNP spokesperson said the campaign in Kennedy was “funded by local people who wanted to support our candidate, Noeline Ikin.”

“Mr Katter’s claims on the amount of money spent by the LNP on advertising are grossly exaggerated,” the spokesperson said.

Mr Katter said the LNP were lying about their advertising costs.

Bob Katter’s claims of million dollar advertising campaigns have been refuted.

A far North Queensland mine owner has been fined $80,000 following a release of mine affected water to Jamie Creek and Walsh River west of Herberton during the 2011/12 wet season.

The owner of the Baal Gammon mine, Baal Gammon Copper Pty Ltd, pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Environmental Protection Act 1994.

Baal Gammon Copper Pty Ltd was sentenced today for one offence of failing to ensure a person acting under its Environmental Authority complied with its conditions, and one offence of breaching an Environmental Protection Order.

Environment and Heritage Protection Minister Andrew Powell said the charges were laid after discharges of contamination into Jamie Creek and the Walsh River near the Baal Gammon mine.

The former operator of the Baal Gammon mine has also been charged with a number of offences in relation to the matter, including breaches of an Environmental Authority, breach of an Environmental Protection Order, and causing environmental harm.

Spare a cent for cancer Millaa Millaa’s Queensland Country Women’s Association will host a cent sale on Saturday in a bid to raise funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

Cent sale coordinator Bev Milligan said the proceeds of the past three Millaa Millaa QCWA cent sales had gone to BCNA, a cause close to her heart.

“Some of my really close friends had it. My mother-in-law got breast cancer when she was 80 and 5 years later she passed away,” Mrs Milligan said. “There were so many women and those with small children. It was heartbreaking. “Seeing what they were suffering, I needed to do something.”

Money raised from the cent sale will held BCNA provide places for women and their families to stay during treatment as well as fund counselling and information sessions.

The cent sale will be held at the CWA Hall in Millaa Millaa from 1pm.

Queensland Disability Awards Nominations for the 2013 Queensland Disability Awards are now open with the State Government encouraging people to nominate individuals and organisations who have improved the lives of people with a disability.

Disability Services Minister Tracy Davis last week opened nominations as part of Disability Action Week.

Mrs Davis said the awards provided an opportunity to recognise as well as celebrate the commitment and passion

of people who work hard to support some of Queensland’s most vulnerable members of our community.

“The awards offer the opportunity to shine a light on the many achievements and hard work of those who give their time to help make another person’s life a little easier,” she said.

Ms Davis said people could nominate their disability champions online in any of the six award categories: Inspiring individual, Community initiative, Education and the arts, Employment and training, Community awareness and Technology and innovation.

Nominations close on Wednesday 27 November 2013 and the awards will be presented at the Queensland Disability Conference.

The Queensland Disability Conference will be held from 24 to 25 March 2014, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Public speaking success St Thomas’s has continued its tradition of success at the Rotary Club of Mareeba’s ‘Youth Speaks’ competition.

The competition attracts students from Year 6 and 7 from across the region as an introduction to public speaking.

In 2013, the competition was won

by Sam Daniell. Sam was adjudged the winning contestant with his speech about the correct use of English.

Students from Mareeba, Dimbulah and Biboohra competed.

Heritage key to rail trail THE proposed Rail Trail from Atherton to the post de-amalgamation TRC boundary near Walkamin will hopefully retain strong links with its railway heritage.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Rail will be asked to leave all items ranging from levers and signs to bridges and culverts in place to add to the future enjoyment of the trail.

“Council is moving closer to finalising lease and other arrangements and this kind of infrastructure will add to the trail experience,” Mayor Rosa Lee Long said.

At its meeting yesterday Council voted to also ask for the rail line and sleepers to be left in place on the bridges to avoid any unnecessary damage that might occur during removal.

“We would also like two sidings behind the Tolga Historical Society Inc Museum to be left in place,” Councillor Lee Long said.

In addition, the name “Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail” is to be registered as the recognised name for all rail trail networks on the Tablelands, and the Tourism and Events Queensland regional branding will be adopted and utilised for the trail.

Cape academy trial extended A ground-breaking trial to improve educational opportunities for indigenous students at the Cape York Australian Aboriginal Academy

(CYAAA) will be extended.

Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek announced a 12 month extension of the trial to the end of 2014 in State Parliament this week.

Mr Langbroek said the trial, which began in 2010 across CYAAA’s three campuses in Aurukun, Coen and Hope Vale, was already producing results, with encouraging outcomes shown in the Australian Council for Educational Research’s independent audit into the trial.

“The trial uses direct instruction education techniques and runs programs that build students’ confidence to move between the Cape and real work and study opportunities,” he said.

Rego label days are numbered The days of scraping a registration label off the corner of the front windscreen are numbered, following a State Government decision to end the stickers.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said Queensland motorists who owned light vehicles would start to receive their last sticker before the labels are phased out on October 1, 2014.

“This will bring Queensland into line with most other Australian states which have already gone stickerless,” Mr Emerson said.

“It will mean a more efficient and effective method of registering vehicles and save up to $3.5 million a year in

postage and printing costs.

“Stickerless regos will apply to all vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes which account for about 96 per cent, or 4.4 million, of vehicles registered in Queensland.

“Using a kitchen knife to pry off an old label and trying to stick on the new label without bubbles will be a thing of the past.

“Abolishing labels will also benefit delivery companies and car rental companies with large vehicle fleets.”

Registration labels were first introduced in Queensland in 1932.

Mr Emerson said advances in technology meant the detection of unregistered vehicles could be done using number plate recognition, rather than citing a sticker on the front windscreen.

“The key issue in making this decision was to be satisfied that there will not be an increase in the number of unregistered vehicles in Queensland,” he said.

“The experience in other states shows that if this is carefully implemented and enforced there won’t be any change in vehicle registration numbers.

“Once the labels are no longer required, the public will be able to check the registration status of their vehicle online or by calling the TMR call centre.”

Fines of up to $8800 apply for driving an unregistered vehicle.

The registration and traffic improvement fees for Queensland motorists range from $92.55 for a trailer to $777.10 for a car (9-12 cylinders).

Clean up begins this weekend

A swarm of volunteers will descend upon Atherton’s Mazlin Creek this weekend as part of the Great Northern Cleanup, the tropical counterpart to Clean Up Australia Day Atherton Rotarian Mandy Lindsay will lead the cleanup of the creek bed and surrounds, which she describes as a “pigsty”, for the event, which runs from this Friday to Sunday.

“The problem is that Rotary Park, which is a public area, backs onto the creek – kids come down here to eat and drink and a lot of them just discard their rubbish here without taking it with them,” she said.

“From there, it goes downstream and mixes with other waterways until it ends up in Lake Tinaroo.

“We ran cleanup of this site two years ago and we found plenty of paper wrappings, cups, lots of plastic, drink cans and even shopping trolleys – hopefully this time it’ll be similar and we won’t be trying to drag car bodies out of the creek.”

“I think as Rotarians we have to be actively involved in the community, we can’t just raise funds in the background all the time.

“It’s great, the Tablelands Regional Council are on board and they’re helping us put up signs – plus the site is still open on the Clean Up Australia site so anyone can join in.”

Clean Up Australia CEO TerrieAnn Johnson said the Great Northern Cleanup was an alternative but not a replacement for the nationwide cleanup event, which is held in March.

“The Great Northern Cleanup is held in September because weather conditions are better for it then,” she said.

“We still encourage people up north to get out for Clean Up Australia Day but the weather is stinking hot and humid, there’s snakes and mozzies – it’s just not a very nice time to be thrashing about picking AM AEST up rubbish.”

Tablelands Police have confirmed that the body of a 24-year-old man was located near Emerald Creek on September 9.

At about 4pm, police from Mareeba received information that a person was missing in waters near the Emerald Creek Falls.

Police and other emergency services attended and an aerial and underwater search of the creek area was conducted.

The missing person was located deceased at about 5.30pm.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

club news Monthly catch-up with the atherton rotary club The Rotary Club of Atherton meets at the Atherton International Club in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere every Tuesday night from 6.30pm.

Relaxed it may be but it is a very busy club.

Among its major projects either to raise funds for the community or to assist the community includes the annual Tastes of the Tablelands to be held this year on Sunday, 20 October, 2013 – come young and old and enjoy a wonderful relaxed and happy day.

The club, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Mareeba also plans, promotes and runs the Rotary FNQ Field Days which were held at Kerribee Park last May. All those who may have been ensnared in traffic on the Dimbulah road at the end of May would have to agree that it was a great success.

The joint clubs are hosting a “Thank You” night at the Walkamin Recreation Hall on Thursday, 19 September from 6 pm for all of the organisations, their members and our volunteers who assisted at the Field Days, so if you were involved, please join us as our guests.

During the latter part of 2012 and the beginning of this year our Rotary Club launched Blaze Aid for all the local farmers just west of us who were devastated by bush fires at the end of last year’s dry season. The club raised nearly $100,000 in support of this great project.

Now the Rotary Club of Atherton members have their sights firmly set on the restoration of the old Igloo at Rocky Creek to ensure the last permanent building still standing at the site of the former Field Hospital is preserved for the Tablelands and wider Australian Community. There are many Australians, Americans and others who may have some connection to this, the largest Field Hospital in the southern hemisphere during the Second World War.

Bringing suicide to light

About 80 people participated in Mareeba’s inaugural suicide prevention and awareness walk held as part of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

By Ryan Groube Shrouded in the stillness of pre-dawn, about 80 people gathered at Centenary Park on September 10 as a first step in bringing suicide ‘Out of the Shadows and Into the Light’.

As part of World Suicide Prevention Day a series of suicide prevention and awareness walks were held across Australia with 2013 marking the first time the Mareeba community has participated.

Rural and regional towns like Mareeba are over-represented in suicide figures with rates up to four times higher than the national average yet the issue has remained taboo, until now.

Just after 5.30am, a brief ceremony was held at the front of the Mareeba Heritage Centre with speeches from Salvation Army chaplain Mick Grant, Lifeline Mareeba manager Theresa Whiteing and Tableland Crime Prevention coordinator Mark Elliott.

Mr Grant said although suicide was dif-

ficult to understand it was important that “stigma and ignorance not be a barrier to getting people the help and assistance that they need”.

Mrs Whiteing said the event was about getting the community talking about suicide with a focus on raising awareness about Lifeline’s 24/7 Crisis Support hotline, 13 11 14.

Mr Elliott said the impact of suicide affected more than those in the immediate family but the “whole of community” from the first responder, to the emergency services and specialists on the scene to friends and acquaintances as the news inevitably filters through the community.

After the speeches, the crowd completed a one kilometre loop from the Mareeba Heritage Centre before heading east on the Kennedy Highway, before returning back along the Mareeba Connection Road.

David Williams attended the walk because the discussion about suicide in Mareeba was

long overdue and that people who were struggling needed to know that there are people, strangers even, who cared about what they are going through.

“I just came to be a part of getting the message out there to those young people who have hard things in their lives that there is a system in place for them to talk about what they are going through,” he said.

“There are people out there who really care that this [suicide] is going on in our community.”

Carolyn Sandaver from the Mareeba Business Women’s Club, who helped organise the event with Mrs Whiteing, said the walk would become an annual event.

Suicide has become the leading cause of death in Australia for those aged under 44 years. Each day, six Australians are lost to suicide. About $1000 raised through registrations will be donated to the Lifeline Community Care Crisis Support Service.

Cyclists targeted in tourism campaign

New Zealand and southern Europe and there’s no reason it can’t do the same on the Tableland, especially with the attractions of the rail trail and the mountain biking tracks.

“A lot of the guys on this tour are firsttimers up north, plus most of them are doing this trip solo but will come back later on with their families for a bit of a slower ride.”

Atherton Rotary vice president John Montgomery said the plan appeared to be working so far.

“Everything looks to be falling into place at this point,” he said.

“By the time these guys come back the first stages of the rail trail should be up and running and a lot of them have said

that they will be keen to drop back in to see how we’re going.”

Cyclist Steve Froome, from Brisbane, said he would definitely pass on the word to his friends.

“I think most of the cyclists you’d have coming from all around would be very interested in something like this,” he said. “I definitely will be checking it out again the next time I’m up here.”

Cycle Queensland is billed as a “holiday on two wheels” and sends hundreds of riders on a leisurely course through the state’s scenic locations every year.

This year’s tour started in Mission Beach and was set to finish at Port Douglas after passing though Yungaburra and Mareeba.

By Boyd Robertson Atherton Rotary is taking advantage of the Tableland’s booming cycle tourism industry to raise awareness of their campaign to restore the historic Rocky Creek Igloo to its former glory.

The Cycle Queensland Tour, consisting of more than 700 cyclists with about 150 support staff, stopped for the morning at the Rocky Creek site on September 13 for a rest and a quick Rotary-hosted tour of the igloo.

By piquing the cyclist’s interest in the site, Atherton Rotary hopes they will repeat its story to their fellow riders and draw attention from the community as cycle tourism expands on the Tableland.

The building was part of a sprawling military hospital

that treated more than 7000 wounded soldiers at a time, serving as the facility’s cinema to keep troops entertained while they recovered.

Rotary, who are trustees of the site, are trying to raise money to restore the igloo and convert it to a military museum to complement the adjacent Rock Creek Memorial Park.

They estimate they will need up to $500,000 for the job.

Cycle Queensland president Bill Loveday said Rotary were onto something with their idea.

“We find with the cyclist community the way to spread information is really by word of mouth – and it will work here,” he said.

QCS This week, 50 OP eligible Seniors of 2013 sat the Queensland Core Skills test across two days. Student’s knowledge, skills and concentration were tested to the extreme as they completed the four sub-tests, vying for a tertiary entrance score that will hopefully see them gain entry into their university course of choice.

When asked how they found the test, Selena Anziliero and Alessia Aloia said “We were extremely well prepared for the test, with weekly sessions giving us an insight on what to expect, however this preparation didn’t stop the nerves!”

Students now have an anxious wait ahead as OPs are calculated in time for the 13th December release of Year 12 Tertiary Entrance Statements.

Method Pre-heat oven to 180.

In a food processor, blend the brocolli.

In a large bowl combine all the ingredients (except rye wrap) and mix together with hands. Take your rye wrap and put meat mixture into the middle of the wrap longways Fold the sides of the wrap and lay the two edges flat down. Repeat the process until all wraps and meat are finished. Rub the wraps with water.

Bake in the oven for approximately 30 minutes until meat is cooked.

School zone safety steps up The Newman Government will consider increasing speeding penalties for motorists caught near Queensland schools.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said a review of speeding around schools with new flashing lights would be conducted before deciding whether further action was required.

“A common excuse from motorists is that they find it difficult to identify when they are entering a school zone,” Mr Emerson said.

“That is no longer an excuse at 92 schools across Queensland where we’ve already installed flashing lights.

“More than 50,000 motorists were caught speeding in a school zone between January 2011 to April 2013.

“If the warning lights don’t curb speeding, then it will be time to increase penalties.”

The new flashing lights are part of the government’s $10 million, four-year promise to deliver more than 300 flashing school zone lights across the state.

Mr Emerson said the government was also considering adding crossing supervisors at a further 12 school crossings across Queensland.

“Over the past year we have increased the number of supervised school crossings by eight to 1214, and a further 12 are being considered for next year,” he said.

“I’ve also asked the Department to speak to a number of school communities about their current arrangements.

“If a school feels a crossing is under-utilised, or the supervisor is in the wrong place then I am keen to receive that feedback and get the best safety outcome for students and parents.

“Unless we receive specific feedback from a school there will be no changes to the existing school crossings.

“School communities know their area the best so any changes to crossings will be a decision for that school.”

Ambulance Week 2013

Show your thanks this Ambulance Week This September, remember to thank the humble heroes of the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) for keeping your family and friends safe all year round.

Ambulance Week, held from September 16 - 22, is the perfect occasion to reflect on the outstanding work of the dedicated ambulance officers and volunteers who provide a first class emergency service to the Queensland community.

QAS Commissioner Russell Bowles said paramedics, communications staff, patient transport officers, clinical staff and volunteers go about their job without expecting recognition or praise.

“Every day our staff and volunteers demonstrate bravery, composure and skill in challenging and often dangerous circumstances,” Mr Bowles said.

“Our service leads the country in clinical care and paramedic training and is among the best in the world in providing state-of-theart emergency care. These results are a testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff.

“During 2012-13 the QAS responded to 870,213 incidents across Queensland. That’s 2,384 incidents, on average, every day.”

Mr Bowles said Queensland’s

diverse ambulance service was the fourth largest in the world.

“During 2012-13 the QAS served over 4.5 million Queenslanders from 298 ambulance response locations across 1.77 million square kilometers,” he said.

“Paramedics and first responders work across a myriad of environments, from Queensland’s densely populated and rapidly growing urban areas, to remote and island communities.

“Our paramedics use all means available to them to respond to an emergency, be it on foot, by air, on a rescue helicopter, across great distances in four-wheel-drives and to island communities, on board a boat.”

Mr Bowles said each year, on the anniversary of the first civil ambulance service in Queensland (established 1892), award ceremonies are held across the State to celebrate Ambulance Week.

“A Star Care Awards ceremony will be held next week to recognise Queensland’s finest QAS staff and community members,” he said.

“A memorial service will pay tribute to ambulance officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty on Friday 13 September 2013.”

Disability parking crack down The Newman Government will increase fines in an effort to crack down on people illegally parking in disabled parking bays.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said fines will be increased for anyone found to be misusing car parks designated for people with a disability.

“Later this year anyone without a valid disability permit parking in a disabled area will be hit with a fine of up to $220,” Mr Emerson said.

“The sad fact is in order to get a closer park and save themselves a few extra minutes some motorists are parking in designated disability parking bays.

“There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour particularly when it can have such a negative impact on our disabled community.

“Earlier this year a number of groups raised concerns with me about this issue particularly if people have a condition that limits how far they can walk and need access to closer car parking.

“Every year we receive complaints from people who uncover drivers misusing car parks and from 2008-2012

more than 5800 tickets were issued by the Queensland Police Service.”

A disability parking permit is granted to anyone when their ability to walk is severely restricted by a medical condition or disability.

Mr Emerson said the increase will bring the State Government into line with several local councils.

“The Brisbane City, Fraser Coast and Barcaldine Regional Councils already impose a $220 penalty for anyone stopping in a disabled parking area,” he said.

“While the changes we have announced will bring our penalties closer to these councils, it is difficult to be completely consistent across the entire State.

“As councils retain the power to impose set parking laws and fines we see a disparity across Queensland which is frustrating for motorists and authorities.

“While these changes will help to reduce the disparity between fines for disability parking, my department is currently reviewing all parking penalties to achieve better consistencies between state and local laws.”

Pineapple farmer wins Nastasi award

Stephen Scurr has taken out the inaugural Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year award in recognition of his pioneering work establishing a pineapple industry in Mareeba.

The award was presented at the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association’s (MDFVGA) gala dinner at the Mareeba International Club on September 14.

For 20 years the dinner has marked a rare chance for the agricultural industry on the Tableland to get together and mingle but this year a towering figure was absent.

Charlie Nastasi passed away on May 1, 2013.

The founding president of MDFVGA was best known for the creation of the first commercial mango winery – Golden Pride Winery – in the world, but also played a key role in developing transport links of the Tableland and was a renowned innovator.

In July, MDFVGA announced that at the gala dinner they would present an award in Mr Nastasi’s honour to a farmer who demonstrated “outstanding innovation or exceptional leadership in the Tableland horticultural industry”.

Prior to the award being presented the crowd of 308 stood in silence for one minute as a mark of respect. Mr Nastasi’s wife Lucy was then presented a

commemorative plaque by MDFVGA president Joe Moro.

The award was selected by a panel of industry leaders from a five person short-list which included: John Nucifora, Karen Muccignat, Vince Mete, Ian McLaughlin and Mr Scurr.

North Queensland operations manager for family owned Pinata Farms, Mr Scurr took out the award for establishing a successful pineapple farm when many thought the fruit wouldn’t grow in far northern conditions.

In 1996, the family established the farm on the western outskirts of Mareeba in a bid to grow pineapples from October to January when it was too cool for the fruit to flourish at their Wamuran farm.

Using a hybrid variety of pineapple, branded Mareeba Gold, the farm has expanded from 120 acres in 1996 to 380 acres and has contributed to Pinata becoming the largest supplier of pineapples in Australia.

“When we started so many people told us that we wouldn’t be able to grow pineapples up here,” he said.

“We had the variety and the reality is that there are not many things that you can’t grow up here.”

Mr Scurr said he had only met Mr Nastasi a handful of times but he was aware of the legacy he had left and was honoured to be the first winner of the award.

Mr Moro said all five nominees for the inaugural award would have been worthy recipients.

A Walkamin-based sustainable agriculture consultancy will take Tableland farmers on a tour across Central and South America to observe organic farming practices in that region.

RegenAG runs courses on organic ways of adding fertility to farmland, such as trapping naturally-occurring microbes to produce fertilizer, and have assembled a group of 17 farmers from around the country, including several from the Atherton, Lakeland and Innisfail regions for the tour, which was set to leave on September 14.

In partnership with Latin American sustainable agriculture organisation Mas Humus, the group will embark on a 16-day tour of farms in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Ecuador that are already using the techniques taught by RegenAG, but on a production level.

The Latin American farms are growing a range of products through vegetables, grains and fruit, and have all managed to

substantially reduce their costs for fertiliser through composting and other organic methods.

RegenAG founder and director Kym Kruse said the trip would give Australian farmers an insight into how to use his company’s ideas on a large scale.

“We look at holistic management in agriculture and getting social and environmental outcomes as well as economic ones,” Mr Kruse said.

“So we’re taking farmers from Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Far North Queensland on this tour to these farms so we can see these techniques in action – over there they have been using these methods for some time and it’s allowed them to cut down on a lot of production costs in things like fertilizer.

“I think it’s going to be very exciting and we’re sure to pick up a lot that can be used back here on Australian farms.”

Mas Humus founder Eugenio Gras said he was “happy to take part in this unstoppable process”.

355 cattle penned this week Mareeba Combined Agents penned a total of 355 head of prime and store cattle for this week’s sale.

A line of well finished older bullocks from Bloomfield provided a good base for both export slaughter buyers and the local wholesale processor to pick from this week. Values for the local trade types didn’t get to the top of 160c/ kg achieved for a good pen of cross bred bullocks last week, but sold to within a few cents.

Local trade heifers from the Daintree sold to 4c/ kg dearer for the milk and two-

tooth types.

Cows to the local wholesale trade were hard to find this week and the buyer needed to pick from a few light better condition bullocks. Export slaughter bullocks and bulls sold to within a few cents of last week, bullocks back 7c/ kg and heavy bulls reached the same rates.

Cows lost ground back by 2c/ kg on the lighter types and very few heavy cows to offer, the heaviest topped at 100 c/ kg.

Some cross bred steers and heifers sold well for both categories.

MAREEBA BASETBALL INC. Lieutenant Dan’s Senior Men maintained their unbeaten record, following an exciting 42 to 40 win over Stingrays in Mareeba fixtures decider last week. Excellent shooting by David Schmidt, whose 20 points contributed to the victory

While in the Senior Ladies round of fixtures, Tequila Slammer and Killers were chasing their initial win for the current season. However young Sarrah Myrteza proved a match winner and her 15 points gave Killers the edge in their 3 points victory over Tequila Slammers.

And you’ll get the horns The Mareeba Bulls Reserves are Far North Queensland Football champions after belting the Marlin Coast Rangers 7-0 in the grand final at Endeavour Park on Saturday night.

In a dominant display, the Bulls - who have been the standout team all year - led 4-0 at half time and didn’t let up in the second half as they won in a canter.

Strikers Elliot Gardener and Carlo Stude had a field day up forward, sharing the seven goals. Gardener claimed four while Stude bagged a hat trick.

Reserves coach Sascha Stankovich said he couldn’t have asked for a more complete performance from his side.

“Tonight the boys just nailed it. They played exceptionally well,” he told The Express amid wild celebrations.

The win marked the first time since 2008 the Reserves have lifted the premiership trophy.

As the top ranking team throughout the regular season, the Reserves have also won the right to contest the Crad Evans Shield at Endeavour Park, on October 5. Crad Evans will pit the Reserve premiers from the Townsville competition against the Bulls for the title of North Queensland champions.

By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Annuals have wrapped up after a day of glamour, racing and excitement.

Innisfail-based trainer Stephen Potiris has nabbed his first Mareeba Cup with the six-year old mare Skitter, who came in a length and a half a head, ridden by newly returned jockey Sonja Wiseman.

Samantha LeBrocq was awarded Best Dressed for Fashions of the Field, with Taylah Hampton taking Best Dressed Filly and Chris Micallef winning Best Dressed Stallion.

Potiris said he was very proud of his first Mareeba Cup. “I’ve had two shots at the Cup here in

Mareeba before, this is my first Cup and I’m pretty chuffed,” he said.

“The horse has done really well especially considering it’s a hot day for a mare - we’ve always thought of her as a frontrunning horse and Sonja has ridden her extremely well this race.

“We always like coming up to Mareeba for the races, it’s a great fun atmosphere and a great country track.”

The race is Wiseman’s first cup after returning from an 18-month absence from the sport.

“It feels pretty awesome,” she said.

“She’s a great horse and she really put the heart in for this run.”

As an Under 7 Stephen Crear wore a Roosters jersey for the first time. At the weekend, as a 19-year-old, he donned the club’s colours as their best player.

The lanky tackling machine was crowned Roosters player of the year in front of about 100 players and supporters at the club’s presentation night on Saturday.

“It means everything to me because I have been here for so long,” he said.

Last year Crear was the club’s rookie of the year and his rapid rise has continued despite having a few problems finding the try line. Against Mossman-Port Douglas at the back end of the season, Crear butchered a dolly of a try by passing a ball when all he had to do was fall over.

The botched try was Crear’s best chance of breaking his season-long trying scoring doubt which, as tradition dictates, results in the dreaded nudie run.

In 2012, Crear qualified for the Italian national rugby league team to play a New South Wales Cup side and is hopeful of getting selected in the preliminary squad for the upcoming world cup.

Despite a season that only netted one win, the mood at the presentation night was upbeat with speeches from president Rodney Cummings and outgoing A Grade coach Curtis Nehow optimistic about the club’s future.

Gladiators end 22-year drought

At 3.30pm on September 15, the Mareeba Gladiators took to the field at Barlow Park in front of hundreds of frenzied supporters for a moment 22-years in the making.

Not since 1991 had Mareeba lifted the A Reserve shield and on the biggest stage the 2013 ‘Gators didn’t let the oppurtunity slip.

Minor premiers, rested and in form the ‘Gators were heavy favourites against the unpredictable Yarrabah Seahawks.

A seesawing first half saw the ‘Gators head to the sheds with a slender 18-16 lead in a match reminiscient of the qualifying final played between the teams a fortnight earlier.

In the second half however, the ‘Gators blew the game apart with a combination of slick attack and bruising defence.

The ‘Gators ran in seven second half tries to one to run out 54-20 winners.

After copping the customary

drenching from the water cooler, Reserves coach David Grainer told The Express that winning the competition would go down as one of his most cherished rugby league memories.

“In the first half we did it the hard way but we spoke about it at half time and we knew if we could just complete our sets the tide would turn and it did,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier to have done this with my brothers from Mareeba. I have won a few A Grade premierships and this feels as good as any of them did.”

Earlier in the day, the Mareeba-Malanda Eels faced off against Ivanhoes for the C Grade premiership.

Malanda looked a little flat all game but managed to pull ahead 16-12 with about 20 minutes to go in the second half. Ivanhoes finished the stronger of the teams and ran in the last two tries of the match to win 22-16.

Both the Reserves and C Grade finished the regular season as minor premiers.

Gold for Jensen, crown for Aloia

By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Gladiators have cleaned up at the Cairns District Rugby League Gold Medal Awards Dinner, with captain-coach Rod Jensen tying for the Gold Medal with Ivanhoes player Trent Barnard, newcomer Ian King taking out Rookie of the Year and Mareeba State High School student Alessia Aloia crowned Miss CDRL. Gators Reserves captain Glen Williams narrowly missed out on the Lionel Williamson Reserve Player of the Year award, while Atherton teenager Dylan Parise picked up the Eacham Junior Rugby League Best and Fairest.

The glamorous dinner, held at Brothers Leagues Club in Cairns, was attended by the biggest figures in the CDRL, including president Colin Moore, local league administrator Pat Bailey and chairman Nigel Tillett, in addition to Member for Cairns Gavin King and Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long.

Australia’s Got Talent finalist Rhys Tolhurst was the master of ceremonies for the night.

In his emotional acceptance speech, Jensen said he felt “very privileged” to receive the medal, which recognises the best and fairest player across the competition.

“This is accolade that you never think you’re going to receive as a player,” he said.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

With tears in his eyes, Jensen said the support of his wife Melissa was more valu-

able than any award.

“Everyone knows that it’s not really how far you go in this sport, it’s the personal that stands behind you that matters,” he said.

“So to Melissa and our two boys, I want to say thank you.”

Speaking to the Express after receiving the medal, Jensen said the award surprised him given his attention to the coaching element of his role with the Gladiators.

“The focus this year for me has really been on the coaching and getting our strategies into the boys,” he said.

“I was concerned that I wasn’t looking at playing as much as I should be but I guess receiving this medal shows I was doing alright.

“I’d like to thank the Mareeba Gladiators for allowing me to come on as a coach and as a player this year.”

Ian King expressed gratitude to Jensen and his family after his award.

“I’m pretty happy with the award, I definitely wasn’t expecting it,” he said.

A scholarship with the Cowboys might be in the works for King, whose remarkable rise from U18s to A Grade began mid-year when he turned 17.

Alessia Aloia, who seems to be on a pageantry roll after winning Mareeba Rodeo Queen in July, said she was stunned at her crowning.

“I really didn’t expect it and I have no idea why they picked me,” she said.

“I’d like to thank the Gladiators and congratulate Rod and Ian on their success.”

Hockey finals A solitary goal from Deana Nasser was enough for Waterloo to spring a major upset over minor premiers Plastered Vets at the Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association grand finals on September 14.

The veteran ladies grand final was a tight, seesawing contest with both sides guilty of squandering attacking opportunities.

Louisa Collins sparked Waterloo in the second half. A decisive run from midfield and an inch perfect cross saw Nasser tap in a goal for a 1-0 lead.

Plastered Vets threw everything at Waterloo in the final 20 minutes but couldn’t convert their chances.

Waterloo captain Lydia Purdy said Plastered Vets had had the wood over them all year.

“They were the strongest team in the competition and if you don’t score first against them it is pretty much all over,” she said. “We hadn’t been in a grand final for four years but it all came together for us today and I am really happy with how hard we all played.”

At about 5.15pm, presentations for all grades were made and the club officially opened its new $200,000 club house. Full results, page 21.
