nother Mareeba Rodeo has wrapped up successfully, bringing to an end the two-week Rodeo Festival. Cold and sometimes rainy weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm of a bumper crowd that turned out for the Interstate Challenge on Saturday and the Rodeo proper on Sunday. Veteran rider Shane Kenny from Emerald gained the title of Champion Cowboy while Nichole Fitzpatrick from Willowtree took out Champion Cowgirl. The Queensland team continued its unchallenged dominance of the Interstate Challenge on Saturday night, emerging victorious over the New South Wales side 36-29. About 330 riders from across the country converged on

Kerribee Park for the rodeo, competing in events across several categories including bull riding, saddle bronc, steer wrestling and roping challenges. The Rodeo caps off two weeks of festivities and events started by the Junior Cowpokes Competition on June 29 and the popular street parade on Friday night. Alessia Aloia was crowed Rodeo Queen, with Lisa Nastasi winning Rodeo Princess and Candice Mulcahy being awarded Miss Personality. A host of other attractions brought in a regular-sized crowd of about 12,000, including rides and sideshows provided by the Showman’s Guild of Australia, woodchopping contests and the Stud Beef Cattle show. Many attendees had travelled interstate to see the rodeo,

evidenced by the enthusiastic cheers for the New South Wales side during the Interstate Challenge. Member for Kennedy Bob Katter also turned up at the rodeo, hat and all. Rodeo Committee president Jim Blakeney said the event had been successful as always. “It was fantastic, we’ve had a good reception this year,” he said. “We were nearly spoiled by rain at the end of the Interstate Challenge but it held off just long enough. “The crowd was at the usual numbers and they were all happy – we’ve had good comments and a good crowd makes a good show.” More Rodeo coverage pages 2, 3, 17, 19.

By Ryan Groube Dark skies cleared as thousands packed Byrnes Street on Friday night to watch Alessia Aloia crowned the 2013 Mareeba Rodeo Queen at the Mareeba Mazda Downtown Parade. Ms Aloia, a 17-year-old Mareeba school girl, was so shocked to have won she had to suck in a couple of deep breaths before addressing the bumper crowd. “I’d like to thank everyone who put in all the hard work that allowed all of us girls to be a part of this. It is something that will stay with us forever,” she said. The self-confessed “townie” said she had a huge interest in rodeos and has loved every moment of the Queens competition. “I’ve only ever attended rodeos as a spectator but I’ve always had a massive interest in them,” she said. “[This competition] has enabled me to a part of something big in the Mareeba community.”

Lisa Nastasi was named Rodeo Princess while Candice Mulcahy won Miss Popularity – an award selected by the Queen entrants. Prior to the coronation, a colourful array of floats paraded along Byrnes Street from 7.45pm as part of the traditional opening of the Mareeba Rodeo in front of a diverse and frenzied crowd. As the parade got underway, youngsters scurried between floats to collect lollies hurled from passing floats. Their hauls are set to provide enough artificial energy to power them through the two day Mareeba Rodeo at Kerribee Park. Cay Williamson managed to stash “about a half of kilogram” of lollies in her coat but insisted that the haul was for her grandchildren. Despite not being in the parade, Shana Aue provided a thrill when he sprang from the crowd, tackled the Queensland State of Origin mascot and proceeded to run him along the street. The Mareeba Netball Club girls found out how difficult it was shooting a ball through a moving hoop and Ringers Rest held a mock wedding on the back of their float which saw them take out the best decorated motor float. Larissa Menniti took out first prize for the best Rodeo Queen entrants float. At the conclusion of the parade, a formal ceremony was held adjacent to the Mareeba Cenotaph to announce the Queens. Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the street parade continued to be an important part of the Mareeba Rodeo. “Mareeba, you should feel very proud of yourself for the display that has been put on tonight,” she said. Mareeba Mazda principal David Mete said the event continued to get better each year.

Officially the best hot sauce A local secret is out. Carol Gear officially makes Mareeba’s best hot sauce. The local grandmother’s cayenne pepper-fuelled zinger took out the hot sauce category in the preserves section of the Bendigo Bank Mareeba Agricultural Show. Unlike many hot sauces that leave tasters clinging to consciousness, sweating profusely and sobbing uncontrollably, Mrs Gear said flavour was more important than burning taste buds. She said on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the hottest, her sauce would rate a “five or six”. “It is not a burning hot sauce. People try this sort of thing with chilli and they suffer for it,” she said. Mrs Gear inherited the hot sauce recipe from her sister in law about five years ago. The hot sauce category is just a small part of the Mareeba Agricultural show that has hundreds of sections within eight broad categories: photography, home economics, sewing, craft, woodwork, horticulture, flowers, pots and plants and sugar cane. The show is open to the public during the two days of the Mareeba Rodeo. A full list of the winners will be posted on The Express Facebook page this week.

Top student honoured By Boyd Robertson A Mareeba State High School (MSHS) graduate has placed amongst the top 500 academically-performing students in Australia. Rebecca Martens, 17, was taken by surprise when told three weeks ago that she had been awarded the Australian Student Prize for 2012. “It wasn’t something I was holding out for at all, so when I found out it was even more of a pleasant surprise,” said Ms Martens, who graduated last year with an OP1. “I’m definitely happy with it.” The federal Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) administers the prize program, selecting the best 500 students from each state then narrowing it down to a final 500 across the country. The award also comes with a cash prize of $2000. It is just the latest in a string of achievements for Ms Martens, who was previously presented with a $1000 Fabris Trust Bursary administered by Apels Solicitors and a joint Junior Community Service Award by the Tablelands Regional Council.

She was also successful in gaining a $20,000 Supporting Women Scholarship from the Queensland Government to assist with her studies in architecture at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. “What I like about architecture is the idea of being able to take something from your mind and make it into a real thing,” she said. Her main academic strength is in mathematics, shown by her ability to take Maths B and Maths C simultaneously throughout her senior school years. Ms Martens delivered a speech at her former school on July 9, in which she encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunities available there. MSHS teachers have hailed Ms Martens’ achievements, with principal Jo Soothill calling her an “inspiration” to the other students. “The current students definitely took on what she said in her speech,” Ms Soothill said. “She’s worked really hard and she deserves this success.” Ms Martens is not the first MSHS student to win the Australian Student Prize, with Alan Schaul making the list in 2010.

Sergeant Musumeci said the whole point of the program was to get all stakeholders involved with road safety at a local level around the table at the same time. “Our role is not to ask for $4.5 million highways it is about fixing local problems that are a cause of concern,” he said. President of the Australasian College of Road Safety Launchlan McIntosh said a large body of academic work around road safety pointed to a model like Project RAPTAR as ‘best practice’. “All the research says that it is the kind of system that works but, so far, it has been hard to make it work in practice and Michael and the community there have done that,” he said. “The system that they have put in place is working and I think it is such a great idea that I am spruiking the project all over the world.” Project RAPTAR has won major national road safety awards and Sergeant Musumeci has done key note speeches on the project at conferences in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Townsville. Mr Musumeci said: “At the end of the day this is all about saving lives on our roads and everyone has a role to play in that.”

By Ryan Groube A Tableland road safety group has attracted national interest as a way of curbing the soaring road toll. Ravenshoe’s Project RAPTAR (reduce accidents, prevent tragedy, activate resources) was lauded by leading road safety experts at an national conference in Adelaide on July 9. The project sees a small committee made up of local residents and state and non-government representatives meet monthly to discuss cheap and practical ways of improving flaws in the road network. Since forming in early 2011, the last fatality on Ravenshoe district roads came on October 28, 2011. This comes despite a steep, winding road, often covered in fog, that runs along the edge of a deep ravine linking Ravenshoe to Atherton. In the past two years, the group has dramatically improved safety along the road by securing funding for guardrails, improved line marking at crash sites and signs warning of sweeping corners. Other changes made under the project include; reducing the height of garden beds to improve visibility at a notorious intersection and used bolards to stop illegal parking at the Ravenshoe school. A woman lovingly known as Matron was farewelled from the Ravenshoe Hospital last week after 45 years of service as a clinical nurse. Linda Appleby moved to Ravenshoe in 1964 where she worked for a private doctor for four years before taking on a job with the Ravenshoe Primary Health Care Clinic on July 25, 1968. She has been there ever since. During her career, Ms Appleby took an active role in developing indigenous health services, provided a follow up service for people with chronic disease and treated five generations of locals at Athe E Sclinic T and in their homes. On July 10, Cairns and Hinterland

Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) chief executive Julie Hartley-Jones and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board chair Bob Norman travelled to Ravenshoe for a farewell party for Ms Appleby. Ms Hartley-Jones said the event was to “celebrate and thank” Ms Appleby for the “remarkable job you have done over a long period of time”. “There will never be another Linda,” she said. Ms Appleby said she left the job proud of what she had achieved in her career and despite leaving with a “heavy heart” she was looking forward to her retirement. Addressing the crowd, Ms Appleby said: “I have loved this job but the time comes for us all”.

Wall of Hope for victims By Boyd Robertson A commemorative wall to be constructed at Centenary Park in Mareeba will raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ). Called the Wall of Hope, it will be constructed out of besser blocks bearing the names of people that donated to the campaign. Each donator effectively ‘purchases’ a brick for $50, which is then divided into four quadrants, each with a name etched on a stainless steel finish covering the brick structure. When finished, the wall will measure 4.4 metres long and two metres high. The wall is a CancerFREE challenge project by Mareeba resident Vilma Moriconi, a CCQ Hope Ambassador. “This is my way to give back to the community – it’ll be the only wall of its type in far north Queensland,” she said. “Anyone that has lost someone or knows someone, or someone that has fought it and survived, this wall is for them and they can contribute to it. It’s just going to be something that someone can stand in front of and say ‘My mum’s name is on that, Bricks are sold for $50 each and all proceeds will go to the

Cancer Foundation. Ms Moriconi was inspired to take up the fight against cancer 15 years ago after losing her mother-in-law to the disease. She has previously been involved in Relay for Life, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and Girl’s Night Out. The idea for the wall “just came to her” when driving several months ago. “I thought ‘I’ll do a wall’, it was simple as that,” she said. “Being at Centenary Park, everyone can use it – the idea is not only will it be a monument in itself but it can also serve as a backdrop for other fundraising events by any other organisation. CCQ spokesperson Katie Clift endorsed Ms Moriconi’s efforts to build the wall and encouraged the Tableland community to support her. Cairns-based designer Chris Dimarco and Ms Moriconi’s husband Graz Moriconi are also involved in designing and building the wall. The wall’s bricks are being donated by TCB Masonry Products. Have a say in how your health service is run A select few Tableland residents will be given the chance to have a direct say in the way health services are delivered in the region for the next 19 years. The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) have announced it will form three Consumer and Community Consultation Committees. The primary role of the committees will be to provide community input about the implementation of the CHHHS Health Services Plan 20122026. The plan outlines the best way to provide “safe and sustainable” health services in the district which includes 19 hospitals. Each of the three committees will be made up of four local residents, a CHHHS staffer and a local politician. Applications for the voluntary positions are set to go live on the CHHHS website this week. Successful applicants will be required to attend a minimum four meetings each year and will serve a two-year term. The Hinterland Hub will cover the hospitals at Mareeba, Atherton, Mossman and smaller western facilities. CHHHS chief executive Julie Hartley-Jones said it was vitally important when implementing a major long-term plan that the community had a say. “This is about getting people from across the Tableland sitting around the table to discuss how we grow our services, where we grow them and the context in which they are developed,”she said. You are long in the tooth today if you learned to ride in the 1960’s when you might still have aspired to Norton Commando or a BSA gold star and Honda 4, and yet we now have an extraordinary phenomenon; motor cyclists who are nostalgic for motorcycles that ceased production before they were born. In this day digital everything, even the manufactures, are bringing retro models back for the motorcyclists of today to enjoy some of the old thrills of riding. Enfield out of India is a classic example sold all over the world. Add a bit of modern technology and they are not a bad bit of kit for what they are. What lies behind this nostalgia? Why does anyone want to ride motorcycles that are outmoded, and which can be seen off by modern machines

in a straight line anyway, and most anywhere else of half their capacity, and offer probably twice the reliability? There are probably many answers but here is a couple. One without a doubt is that there is now more respectable and sober citizens in their 50’s and who were starstruck with motorcyles as children, and now old enough, kids grown up and fled the nest, can now own that bike they dreamed of. Another reason I believe is that most motorcyclists carry around in their heads an image of what a motorcycle is supposed to look like and how it should work. Not are these the only reasons. A classic motorcycle bespeaks of a nobler age, when the sun hadn’t set on the British empire and Joe Lucas, the prince of darkness was known and feared thought the motorcycle world. Okay gonna tell you all again – don’t forget sidecars and solos MX bike quads speedway on July 27, followed by motocross the next day right next door. Be there it’s gonna be bigger than Ben-Hur. The LAND Award to honour Charlie

The Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award has been named in Charlie Nastasi’s honour who passed away in May this year

The Tableland Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association is calling for nominations for a new award named after one of the greatest industry pioneers in the region. The Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award will recognise “outstanding innovation or exceptional leadership in the Tableland horticultural industry,” according to association president Joe Moro. “We’re looking for someone that has found a new way of doing things or really stood out as a leader in the field,” Mr Moro said. The award bears the name of Charlie (Carmelo) Nastasi, the first president of the Association, who passed away on May 1 this year. A Mareeba-based mango and former tobacco farmer, Mr Nastasi was recognised as a driving force in the local industry’s development and was instrumental in organising the region’s transport through involvement in the Committee of Direction (COD). “Charlie was our inaugural president and he was also on countless committees in the industry,” Mr Moro said. “We started planning the awards about 12 months ago, and after Charlie’s death we decided to attach his name to it to honour his contribution to the industry. “Transport was a massive problem back in the day – Charlie was very heavily involved in the COD to help sort it out.” Mr Nastasi’s son Sam on behalf of Charlie’s family, said they

were “honoured” by the award’s name and grateful to the association that his contribution to the agricultural industry will be recognised in this way. “As a family we really want to thank the Association for recognising the part that Dad played in the industry,” he said. “He wasn’t one that went chasing recognition but I think he would have really appreciated this. “In fact, I think he would have felt honoured as well.” At the age of 26 Mr Nastasi bought his parents’ tobacco farm, soon becoming the youngest director of the Tobacco Leaf Marketing Board. In the 1970s he made the shift from tobacco to horticulture, designing what is believed to be the first sweet potato harvester in 1978 and the first mango-packing machine in 1984. He became the first president of the Association in 1975 and held that position for about 20 years. Various awards were presented to Mr Nastasi over his career, including the Pyramid Achievers Award, the Australia Day Medallion and the Inaugural Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award. The Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award will be presented at the Association’s traditional annual dinner at the Mareeba International Club on September 13. Mr Moro asked that nominations be finalised by August 13 and said they could be directed to either PO Box 989 at the Mareeba Post Office or emailed to mdfvga@bigpond.com.

Exploder named Champion Bull Warrina Droughtmasters Stud have taken out the Grand Champion Bull category at the Mareeba Rodeo’s Stud Beef Cattle Show with the young male Warrina Exploder. Exploder, an 11-month-old Droughtmaster weighing 435 kilograms, also won in the Calf Champion Bull category. Fassifern Limousin Stud in Tarzali cleaned up the rest of the bull awards, with the enormous Fassifern George winning Senior Champion Bull and Fassifern Hugo taking out Junior Champ Bull. Young female WH You Betcha from WH Brahman Stud matched Exploder’s

achievement, winning both Grand Champion Female and Calf Champion Female. Warrina Wannabe won Junior Champion Female and Fassifern Fantasia won Senior Champion Female. Bill Smith from WH Brahman Stud was judged the Most Successful Exhibitor. Competition judge Fiona Pearce said Exploder was a clear winner for Grand Champion Bull. “His weight for a young bull is exceptional,” she said. “He’s got good bone and he’s easy fleshing. He’s also a free-moving bull, able to stride out onto the paddock easily.”

Warrina stud owner Peter Bauer said Exploder’s win was “unreal.” “For an 11-month old bull to do that and to be grand champion is practically unheard of,” he said. Warrina Exploder will in all likelihood go to Rockahmpton next year for the National Droughtmaster Sale. Mr Bauer also thanked Ravenshoe State School for showing the Warrina cattle during the competition. The competition’s 40-odd head of cattle were spread across seven breeds and five studs. The Stud Beef Cattle Show is now in its 12th year running at the Mareeba Show.

No butcher cattle The Mareeba Agents yarded 473 head drawn from local areas with some from Laura and Mt Surprise. The market held similar to last week with quality slipping in most descriptions and no Butcher cattle to mention. Store Cows sold to 90 c/ kg but mostly around 85 c/ kg. The Steer section had a run of Lakeland and Laura Steers topping at 144.2 c/ kg selling down to 110 c/ kg pending weight and frame. Store heifers were hard to shift due to type on offer.

Mareeba Lions held a Metrogaine recently to raised money for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. This was the first such event held by Mareeba Lions and turned out to be quite successful. Although only 60 entrants participated everyone who did enjoyed the experience, with many suggestions for another to be held soon. Participants were given a sheet with clues to assist them in identifying and finding 31 places around the town of Mareeba within a two and a half hour period. Two teams found all the places, accumulating the maximum points. Prizes had been donated by local business people ensuring that a range of categories were able to be rewarded. The event raised $600.00 for the ALCCRF. The Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation Trustees are totally committed to the goal of 100% survival of children diagnosed with cancer. The trustees are currently considering two new proposals, one a further trial of Neuroblastoma research involving a drug not used before and the second a project to improve cancer treatment of children in rural areas. These are significant research projects that hopefully will have an impact on the survival rate of kids with cancer. The cost of these two trials will be in the vicinity of $3/4 million over 3 years. Everyone notices that many people in our community are happy to throw their rubbish on the street. Not many notice those responsible members of the community who while taking in a bit of exercise also pick up after the litterers. Mareeba Lions acknowledges the good work of Sue Soda, John Gordon, and Keith Neilson all of whom have been spotted picking up discarded rubbish from our streets. held their combined changeover dinner on the 22nd June. Guest speaker Dr Merilee Frankish was presented with a Professor Ian Frazer Humanitarian Award for her outreach work in New Ireland Province PNG. Delsi DeLai was presented with a Richardson Award for her tireless voluntary work for Lioness, and John DeLai, Ron Blundell and Tom Braes were each awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest honour a Lion can achieve. Lions and Lioness were out in force on Sunday providing nutritious lunch to over 250 riders and support staff participating in the Cairns to Karumba bike ride which raises money for bush kids. The gathering was entertained by school bands from Mareeba State High School, Atherton State High School, and Yungaburra State School. Well done to all the band members who did a great job. Mareeba Lions recently held a working bee at the very popular Mary Andrews Park. Concrete slabs were poured to support BBQ’s being installed by the Council. The winner of the Lions hundred board was Sarah Page of Herberton Street. Thank you for your support. Lions are proud to have completed concrete slabs in Mary Andrews Gardens Park to enable TRC to install public BBQ’s, a great addition to a great facility. ‘Gators eye top three By Ryan Groube A soft run home has the Mareeba Gladiators primed for a top three position and a double chance in the looming Cairns and District Rugby League finals. The ‘Gators enjoyed the bye at the weekend with the guaranteed two points keeping them in third position behind runaway competition leaders Cairns Kangaroos (27 points) and second placed Southern Suburbs (25 points) Behind the ‘Gators is a logjam of three teams (Brothers Innisfail, Brothers Cairns and Ivanhoes) fighting it out for two finals spots on 20 competition points. Even the seventh placed Yarrabah Seahawks (17 points) aren’t out of finals contention in what is set to be a thrilling battle for a finals berth over the last five rounds of the regular season. In the final five games the ‘Gators do not play a team in the top five. This weekend the ‘Gators host sixth placed Ivanhoes, before a tough away game to the mercurial Seahawks in Yarrabah. In the final three rounds the ‘Gators host the winless Roosters, the eighth placed Tully Tigers, who have fallen away after a strong start to the year, before finishing the season at Davies Park against tenth placed Mossman/Port Douglas. After 16 rounds, the ‘Gators record stands at nine wins, five losses and a draw (and a bye) in what has been a breakthrough season for a team who finished ninth in 2012. Suburbs have a nightmare run home playing three teams in the top five including the top placed Kangaroos as well as sixth placed Ivanhoes.

Young bulldog has NRL career in sight By Boyd Robertson Domenic Petralia, 13, played for the Northern Marlins Under 13s side in the Queensland Rugby League State Junior Championships in Brisbane form June 26 to 30. The junior Marlins faced off against the Capricorn Capras, Southwest Mustangs, Poinsettias, Wide Bay Bulls and the Kookaburras in a brutal five-game competition, beating all except the Kookaburras. The towering Petralia said he enjoyed the opportunity and was looking hoping to enter professional rugby league. “I like to play football because of the teamwork and just how fun it is,” he said. “Going away to play is good as well because you meet other players and have a lot of fun. “I’d definitely like play professionally for the Bulldogs.” Petralia, who measures about 185 centimetres and weighs about 85 kilograms (and is still growing) was his team’s work-

horse in the prop position, controlling play through his size and aggressiveness. “When I play prop I run straight,” he said. “I bring all the defenders into the centre so our team can spread out and make ground. “I set up plenty of tries but I also scored a lot as well – normally I would run from the back and go straight through them.” Petralia’s mum Cheryle said it was believed he is the first Mareeba player to play in the junior state championships and that he had a great future ahead of him. “The amount of people that have been telling us [that he’s headed for big things] is incredible,” she said. Petralia has been playing rugby since he was 11 and currently plays for the Mareeba Gladiators Under 13s. Shane Kenny has clinched the Champion Cowboy title at the Mareeba Rodeo on Sunday afternoon, with Nichole Fitzpatrick from Willowtree in New South Wales nabbing Champion Cowgirl. The weather might have been gloomy but the action in Kerribee Park’s main area was electric as about 330 riders turned out to test their skill, grip and willpower against the ferocious power of some of the toughest bulls and horses in the country. Poor weather on Sunday meant there was plenty of room on the stands for the remaining diehard fans. Despite this, the Rodeo still attracted its regular crowd of about 12,000. Veteran Kenny was already on the 1,000-kilometre drive home to Emerald by the time awards were presented. In the other events, Jake Simpson won Junior Champion Cowboy while Shaye Land gained the title of Junior Champion Cowgirl. Ted Simpson risked life and limb to win the Clown Competition, followed by Bob Dahl and Simon Collins. Charlie Colless took out the Open Bull Ride category and Tony Caldwell won the Open Saddle Bronc category. Revee McCormack took out first in the Open Bareback challenge and Cody Sheahan proved himself the most adept at steer wrestling.

Strategic bike race By Rudi De Faveri Mareeba Mountain Goats In a year full of firsts for the mountain bike calendar the Mareeba Mountain Goats had the pleasure of presenting the Strategic Sixer at the weekend. With a focus on participation and strategy, the scene was set for a fun day riding the trails at Davies Creek. The random allocation of partners at the beginning of the event proved to be a great way for competitors to meet new people and break the ice. I am sure that most of the regular mountain bikers will know that a transformation can occur for some riders once they put their helmet on to begin a race. It seems the helmet has a magical ability to disconnect the brain from the rider, leaving a 70 kilogram mass of uncontrolled muscle and nervous tissue. With four courses for riders to choose from, there was one comical

moment where two solo riders were seen in the distance, off there bikes, negotiating course direction accompanied by much hand-waving. Racing involved a few different strategies, but the most successful yet difficult choice was to ride the supersize lap. The solo men’s category winner Paul Andrew Mashford, completed eight laps and an approximate distance of 130 kilometres. Ivonne Nathan took the female category. The key to success in the pairs category appeared to be based on your first name. If you are fortunate enough to be called Gary, it appears that you may have a bright future in the sport of mountain biking.
