Internal conflict at TRC T

Unique wine in hot demand

he remnant Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is descending into internal conflict, with council’s second meeting since deamalgamation dominated by infighting between the Mayor and rebellious councillors.

At council’s February 6 meeting in Atherton, Councillor Marjorie Pagani launched a blistering attack on Mayor Rosa Lee Long over her frequent use of her extra casting vote.

Under the Local Government Act, council mayors are allowed an extra vote which they can use to break voting ties during meetings.

Cr Lee Long used the vote twice to defeat and defer a proposal to develop a new council agricultural buffering policy, then again to carry Cr Peter Hodge’s request to delay changes to the TRC’s roadworks budget for Mt Garnet.

Finally at the end of the meeting she used the vote to prevent independent noise testing at the Windy Hill Wind Farm.

On each matter Cr Lee Long, deputy mayor Geoff Stocker and Cr Hodge voted together against officer recommendations, and were opposed by Cr Pagani, Cr Shaaron Linwood and Cr Rod Marti.

During her attack Cr Pagani also accused the Mayor of holding secret gatherings with Cr Stocker and Cr Hodge to determine the outcome of council decisions before official meetings.

She also claimed that Cr Lee Long had remarked “I don’t want six councillors – if there are only five, I’ve got Peter Hodge, I’ll get Geoff Stocker and then I will be able to use my casting vote to get what I want’,” in the wake of the de-amalgamation vote in March 2013.

Cr Lee Long immediately initiated a successful vote to force Cr Pagani to desist and threatened to have her removed from the council chambers.

Talking to the Express after the meeting, the Mayor later strongly denied Cr Pagani’s accusations, calling them “a personal attack”.

School leaders appointed

By Boyd Robertson Mareeba State High School (MSHS) and Atherton State High School (ASHS) have appointed their student leaders, who now face a year-long task of guiding and representing their peers.

MSHS’s Senior Eight consists of school captains Belinda Grundling and Oliver Cotterill, vice-captains Madalyn Wallace and Matthew Penn, student council president Teagan Abdy, vice-president Tara Sharpe, secretary Monique Ebner and treasurer Haydan Bonaccorsi.

ASHS’s senior leaders are school captains Aidan Prowse and Grace Lawrence, vice captains Karli Riesen and Angus Lauder, student council president Georgia Liston, vice president Garret Magian, treasurer Abby Walsh and secretary Georgia Sellars.

St Stephen’s Catholic College’s senior leaders, appointed Monday morning, are school captains Jack Petersen and Kylie Walmsley, vice captains Joshua Smith and Lucy Ferguson, student council president Caitlyn Long, vice president Jamella Growns, secretary Bridget White and treasurer Olivia Pezzelato.

Malanda State High School’s senior leaders will be decided in elections held on Wednesday, and will be formally inducted next week.

Oliver Cotterill and Belinda Grundling both said they felt “immensely proud” to be appointed to their positions.

“I feel thrilled and I’m very excited to represent the school,” said Oliver. “One of the things we’ve been discussing together and agreed on is that the school needs a proper covered bus shelter outside, so we will be helping organise and run fundraisers to that end.”

Latest exhibits revealed at Centre Mareeba Hertiage Centre and Museum revealed its latest exhibits to an enthusiastic audience on Saturday.

The main attraction was a large fibreglass-and-steel sculpture created by Lake Eacham artist Viven Plant with assistance from welder Bruce Rowe, which was unveiled

by Mareeba Shire Council mayor Tom Gilmore.

The sculpture depicts a miner

from the region’s early settlement days atop a horse trying to leap away from a snake wrapped around its leg.

The Tablelands Electronic and Radio Club (TREC) made contact with radio operators in the United States, Canada and Europe at the event to mark the granting of the state’s first amateur experimental radio licence, which was granted to Marcus Brims in 1914 and formed

the exhibit’s second peice.

Centre manager Louise Mabbutt said the unveiling had been a success, despite wet weather limiting audience numbers.

“I think it’s really good turnout and that the exhibit has been wellreceived,” Ms Mabbutt said. “There was a good laugh when Viven’s sculpture was unveiled, all the kids were smiling because it’s a humorous piece.”

“Something I’m very keen to start on is getting the younger students into school activities and getting them involved in the school community,” she said.

MSHS principal Jo Soothill said she had seen the leadership group grow into capable young adults.

“I’m getting to the point where I’ve seen these kids come through nearly an entire secondary cohort,” she said. “All of them have shown a lot of leadership potential – they’re also very competitive and put in a lot of work to get their positions and I’m looking forward to working with them.”

ASHS principal Tony Whybird commended his school’s choice of leaders, saying the team was very ‘diverse’ and applications for the positions had been high.

ouncil has backtracked on a controversial motion, returning hiring powers to new Mareeba Shire (MSC) chief executive Peter

Franks.

At the January 15 meeting of council, an amendment to the MSC’s organisational structure required that vacancies could not be filled without the approval of council.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was important the motion be overturned as it “simply tidied up some loose ends.”

Mr Franks, who began work as the MSC chief executive on February 3, said it was vital he could fill positions without having to wait for bi-monthly council meetings.

“It is important, especially if we need to fill vacancies in a hurry,” he said.

“If we have critical positions that need to be filled urgently [the requirements of the motion] could have caused organisational delays.

“Council however has made it very clear that we need to be careful with our staffing numbers and every opportunity to reduce numbers through natural attrition should be taken.”

Mr Franks said since beginning work, he had been spending time getting to know staff and familiarising himself with the structure he inherited from departed acting MSC chief executive Rod Ferguson.

The next big task facing Mr Franks is beginning work on the 2014-15 MSC budget.

Mr Franks said it would be a “zero base budget”.

“That is where we go through each and every cost line and ask ‘do we need this’,” he said. “Each council provides similar services to the community but it differs in the way and at what level that service is provided. What we will be determining is what level of service we need to meet community

Mr Gilmore said he had been impressed by Mr Franks introduction to council and felt he would be a valuable asset.

“He brings to council a lot of experience and a very strong personality which pleases me,” he said. “He also brings the ideas necessary to develop this new culture we have been talking a lot about which will encourage vigour, a dedication to efficiency but also a culture where staff are comfortable.”

Mr Franks is a past chief executive of the Mackay and Livingstone regional councils and recently completed his role as transfer manager for the Noosa Shire Council.

Mayor Tom Gilmore has moved to temper community expectation that Council will be successful in securing up to $10 million in State money to help fund a new Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant.

At the February 5 council meeting, a motion was carried to submit an expression of interest to fund the new wastewater treatment plant through the Royalties for the Regions funding bucket.

Royalties for Regions provides funding of between $250,000 and $10 million for infrastructure projects with $130 million available in this round.

Should council be successful in securing the maximum funding, it would shave more than a third of the estimated $27 million required for the new facility.

There is no guarantee that a council will receive funding and the wastewater treatment plant fails to satisfy the key criteria for funding.

In the expression of interest, council must demonstrate that the need for funding has “resulted from resource sector activity”. This criterion accounts for a 50 per cent weighting in allocating funds.

Despite the wastewater treatment plant garnering a low rating in the first criteria, it is perfectly suited for the second (40

per cent weighting) which requires the project “will improve community and/or economic infrastructure with clear benefits to the community”.

Mr Gilmore said council would continue to hammer all funding buckets in a bid to reduce the burden on ratepayers.

“We are in a position where we must simply seek funding from any likely source,” he said. “There is a hope that particular clause [criteria one] is sufficiently open to flexibility.

“In my view this is the most important health and environmental issue facing our shire and I will not rest until these outstanding matters are resolved.”

Mr Gilmore said in pursuing funding for the wastewater treatment plant other major regional development projects, including the Mareeba Airport upgrade would have to take a back seat.

“It is better to take one step at a time.

You lose credibility if you start chasing $15 million for that and $15 million for another thing,” he said.

“Everybody needs to calm down, accept that it is a mess but that it is being dealt with in good faith.”

The Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant is more than 40 years old and has been in breach of its environmental license for more than a decade.

“It is a democratic right of any mayor to use the casting vote in deadlocks so council can get on with business.

“Cr Pagani’s outburst came completely out of the blue and I am shocked by it.”

Cr Lee Long also denied that a voting bloc consisting of herself, Cr Stocker and Cr Hodge had formed in council.

Cr Linwood backed up Cr Pagani’s criticisms of the Mayor, saying going against officer recommendations was risky.

“I think it’s poor leadership on (Mayor Lee Long’s) part, using her vote like this to get her own way,” she said.

“In my experience (going against officer recommendations) ends up with the council in appeal courts costing ratepayers hundreds of thousands to defend itself.”

Cr Pagani maintained she felt she ‘could not make a difference’ in council if the Mayor continued to use her casting vote so frequently.

“I regard the way the Mayor is using (her casting vote) as an abuse of process... I fear for the democratic

representation of the people,” she said.

Cr Stocker and Cr Hodge defended the Mayor’s right to her extra vote.

Cr Rod Marti would not comment on the Mayor’s use of the vote but pointed out the need for a sixth councillor to correctly represent the TRC’s ratepayer population.

Solar System capital of Far North Qld Mareeba has become the solar system capital of the far north with more than one in seven homes having a photovoltaic (PV) system installed.

Ergon Energy and a local installer are at a loss to conclusively explain why 16 per cent of households, the highest per capita in the far north, have installed panels on their roofs.

There were 1,029 of the systems recorded in Mareeba

by Ergon at the end of last year. Atherton also has a high uptake rate with 14 per cent of households installing solar systems.

A spokesperson from Ergon said the company had not done any research as to why the uptake in Mareeba was significantly higher than in other towns.

“Anecdotal evidence would suggest that population demographics have something to do with it in other parts of the state – for example a higher concentration of retirees in the Wide Bay area is, we believe, one of the reasons there is a high percentage of home PV systems there,” the

spokesperson said.

“The exact reasons for Mareeba’s high uptake do not appear as clear though.”

Co-owners of Tableland Solar Peter and Gino Avolio said the drop in the amount that can be recouped from the Federal Government’s Solar Bonus Scheme from 44 to eight cents had seen the sector slow.

“A lot of people liked the idea [of solar systems] when the rebate was at 44 cents, particularly if people were paying $600 to $700 a quarter for electricity,” Peter said.

Although they conceded they were “shocked” Mareeba’s uptake was so high, they said the weather couldn’t be discounted as a reason behind people moving to solar.

“I think you have to put it down to the number of sunny days we have each year,” Peter said.

About 12 per cent of households in Cairns are connected to solar, with 10 per cent in Ravenshoe, nine per cent in Cooktown and Mossman and just eight per cent in Babinda.

The State Emergency Service (SES) has fast tracked basic training in a bid to bolster volunteer numbers.

During the past couple of years, far northern SES brigades have been barely keeping their head above water when it comes to volunteers, losing as many members as they gain.

SES area manager for the Tableland Daryl Camp said the fast track program would slash the time it takes for volunteers to receive basic training from six months to nine weeks.

Mr Camp said despite two cyclones passing to the south and to the west of the area in the past fortnight in the event “of a big one” it was critical Tableland SES headquarters had volunteers on the ground.

“Groups at Ravenshoe and Herberton are in real need of volunteers and all the other groups have members but are always wanting and looking for more,” he said.

Far northern SES brigades have been relatively quiet in 2014 with only 10 storm damage jobs between Cardwell and Mossman. For the Mareeba SES the only major call-out in 2014 has been a land search for Chillagoe man Stephen Currie.

Mr Camp said it was critical that anyone interested join up either this week, or at the very latest, next week.

If people miss this deadline the next major intake of volunteers won’t be held until August.

By Boyd Robertson High schools across the Tableland are bracing for a flood of extra students ahead of Year 7 becoming part of the secondary curriculum next year.

More than 58,000 Queensland students in Year 6 will find themselves in tsecondary school in 2014 as part of the Flying Start reforms, which brings the state’s education system in line with the rest of the country.

The introduction of a prep year in 2007 and the tweaking of age requirements for Year 1 entry in 2008 mean that 2015’s Year 8 cohort will be half its normal size, helping to lessen the impact of the changes.

The government is dedicating $328 million for upgrades in state schools help them prepare for the extra student numbers.

Mareeba State High School is expecting a Year 7 cohort of between 120 and 140 students, combined with a Year 8 cohort of about 80.

Atherton State High School is expecting a new cohort of about 180 Year 7 students.

Malanda State High School is set to receive about 80 Year 7 students along with with 40 Year 8s.

All three schools are upgrading and renovating classrooms, in addition to running transition days for current Year 6 students to help them familiarise with their future campuses and lesson plans.

MSHS Principal Jo Soothill said the efforts to ease the transition would not be wasted.

“I think it’s going to work just fine – we will have a lot of systems around these students that is aimed at addressing the problems they might run into,” she said.

‘All the wealth went south’ Mayor Tom Gilmore’s first approach to the community of the newly de-amalgamated Mareeba Shire Council is certainly not one of confidence.

With his messages of huge rate rises in excess of $600 per rateable property to come in June 2014 [The Express, ‘Rates left steady’, page one, February 5] due to a possible $27 to $30 million dollars to upgrade the dilapidated Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant.

In addition a 500 per cent increase in Stateowned bulk water supplier SunWater who are to raise the cost of a megalitre of water from $58 to $563 will also impact heavily on each rateable property.

I am not sure what strong messages Mayor Gilmore is sending to both the State and Federal governments, but he and his elected councillors need to be right in the faces of local members David Kempton and Bob Katter as well as the relevant Ministers, State and Federal.

He should jog their memories of the past where hundreds of millions of dollars were ripped out of the Mareeba and Dimbulah tobacco growing area in excise tax for more than 60 years and what has the area received in real terms in exchange is very little.

All the wealth went south.

In the 1950s, the then Labor government approved and commenced works on the now invaluable Tinaroo Dam which diverted water from the eastern water shed and directed it across the Great Dividing Range into the western water shed thus allowing the tobacco industry to expand immensely in both Mareeba and Dimbulah.

This then created a huge amount of wealth for the governments of the day until only a few years ago.

I have tried very hard to list the infrastructure and public assets etc returned to the communities of

Mareeba and Dimbulah to improve their standards of living as a direct reflection of the hundreds of millions of dollars taken out of this area over a 60 year period : Tinaroo Dam 1950s, roads tar sealed in most areas of Mareeba and Dimbulah from the 1960s to 80s, Mareeba Hospital, public schools, State Government buildings and services, a now disused rail system, a grant to install the Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plan in the early 60s.

It is nothing less than a disgrace that past State and Federal Governments can take so much wealth out of a once very prosperous tobacco growing area for so long and not return proportional funding to ensure the communities of Mareeba and Dimbulah have top class infrastructure.

Ratepayers of the Mareeba Shire Council will face a huge expense to bring the wastewater treatment plant up to the required standard.

It is high noon and Mayor Gilmore and his elected councillors should demand nothing less than a senate inquiry.

Mayor Gilmore needs to be quite relentless in his approach to State and Federal Government Ministers to ensure maximum Government funding to upgrade the now very outdated Mareeba Waste Water Treatment Plant.

How are they going to lead the shire forward if they don’t have the final say, they are the ones that we the voters hold responsible for the success or failure of the Shire.

Naturally, the chief executive and staff play a very important part in keeping the huge wheel turning, but if they are not going to be responsible to the Mayor and councillors we may as well have stayed amalgamated. Like many other voters, I believe that the Mayor and councillors should be aware of these facts also.

Ron Kane Mareeba Agricultural land not for development The Tablelands Regional Council is soon to revisit and vote on an application for a rural residential subdivision on good quality agricultural land in the Mountain View area of Atherton.

This arable land is in what has always been known as the “golden triangle” of the Tableland because of its rich red volcanic soil and great cropping capacity.

Although the council’s town planning department advised against approving this lot for rural residential subdivision, some councillors, prior to de-amalgamation, went against that advice.

Objections by various neighbours who would be adversely affected if the subdivision went ahead were submitted.

The case was heard recently in the Environmental Court in Brisbane where the approval was overturned listing various points of concern.

The applicants are now pressuring council to ignore this Court ruling.

There are similarly approved subdivisions in the Atherton district which are neither selling nor even started after having approval for some time.

I think ratepayers would be unhappy to know how much of their funds were spent in the Court process. For Council to ignore the judge’s ruling and consider this application again, in relation to Council’s New Draft Plan is beyond all comprehension.

Residents elect councillors in good faith. One would hope and expect that the Mayor and other councillors remember what the Tableland is really about before considering going against an Environmental Court decision. Many

do not believe that housing developments should extend further into farming land along that eastern side of Tinaroo Falls Dam Road.

Beverly Prescott Atherton More illegal activity I noticed the article on illegal activity occurring on vacant land off Slade Road. (The Express February 5th. Page 3).

This activity is also being carried out on the vacant land running off James Street and behind Salihe Avenue and Owens Street. Both parcels of land were originally slated for the long since abandoned Mareeba by-pass road proposal.

I recently wrote to the State Government requesting an up-date on the current status of this land. I received a reply dated 22nd January, 2014 signed by Dr. Brett Heyward, Director General, Department of Natural Resources and Mines.

For the benefit of the small minority who seem to think they can do as they wish on this land, below are listed a few points which address issues associated with the areas in question.

The land is recognized as “unallocated state land” and comes under the control of the DNR&M. DNRM is currently investigating future land uses and undertaking land assessments and will be working with Mareeba Shire Council to determine future use of the land.

Responsible, community minded persons who currently use the land for exercise or other LAWFUL activities will not be excluded from the areas although these activities are not an “authorised use of the land”.

This is an interim measure and may change once a future use for the land is decided.

Activities such as hooning, (cars, quads, motor bikes etc.) and dumping of waste materials will not be tolerated and DNR&M has raised these issues with Mareeba Police.

Senior Sergeant Derek Garner has requested that any relevant information be reported to the Police. Unfortunately, many of the offenders are unlicensed and are using non compliant machines which cannot be registered so identifying these people can be a challenge.

Based on some of the incidents I’ve seen over the past few months, it’s only a matter of time before there is a serious injury or fatality on this “unallocated state land”.

High demand for unique local wine

By Boyd Robertson A unique fruit liqueur developed by a Biboohra mango farming operation is winning awards and selling faster than its creators can make it.

Dragonfruit Cello fortified liqueur is the latest in Mango Drop Winery’s lineup of fruit wines and was launched in 2012 to coincide with the Chinese Year of the Dragon.

The cello’s vibrant reddish-purple colour and sharp taste helped it stand out amongst peers at the 2013 Perth Royal Show, where it picked up a silver medal in the Commerical Wines category.

Golden Drop owners Sam and Dino Nastasi developed the cello.

Sam said their main motivation was to exploit the dragonfruit’s bright red colour.

“I had been thinking about it trying to use the dragonfruit for a while – ever since I saw the colour of the flesh I was thinking ‘wow, that’s something, we need to use that’,” he said. “The funny thing is although it’s bright red, the dragonfruit is actually pretty bland and doesn’t taste much like anything – so the challenge for us was to develop a process where we could turn into a drink, keep the flavour but actually have a powerful taste to it, and I

think we’ve done pretty well at that.”

The process behind developing Dragonfruit Cello is a secret, but Mr Nastasi said it took a whole year to perfect.

“Dragonfruit is difficult to work with – particularly separating the seeds from the juice,” he said.

The results of the Nastasi’s experimentation exceeded expectations, with the first batch of Dragonfruit Cello released in 2012 selling so fast Mr Nastasi and his brother were forced to actually raise the price in order to slow down sales and not run out of stock.

Even after increasing production 300 per cent, Mr Nastasi predicts that Golden Drop will still sell out of Dragonfruit Cello this season, especially after exporting the drink to markets in China and Japan.

The winery will have to buy extra dragonfruit to supplement their own stocks.

Mr Nastasi is confident that the beverage is the only fortified wine made with dragonfruit anywhere in Australia, if not the world, and puts its success down to the drink’s unique appearance and the burgeoning Chinese tourist market.

“The colour is what gets people,” he said.

The dragonfruit, also known as the pitahaya, grows on a tall cactus and is native to Mexico.

There are two excellent quality new movies at The Rising Sun Cinema this week. PHILOMENA, with Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, is a powerful and dramatic true human interest story. ADORATION, based on the novella by Doris Lessing and also based on a true story, is an excellent Aussie movie, starring Oscar nominee Noami Watts and Robyn Wright and tackles a thought provoking subject.

Review by Louise Keller: Clouds, kites, Mickey Mouse and dancing penguins all play a part in this emotional rollercoaster about redemption and letting go. Take a tissue and be prepared for a heartfelt experience; the true story of author P.L. Travers and the rocky road travelled for her famous character Mary Poppins to reach the screen is not only filled with surprises, but delivers an emotional tour de force. John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) has cleverly crafted a film whose emotional heart is protected by artifice and comedy, prompting its impact to doubly resonate. As for the winning combination of Emma Thompson as Mrs Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, nothing could be finer or more enjoyable.

The humorous creative clashes are never-ending and the fact that Mrs Travers insists that every meeting is recorded has a pay off during the end credits. There are some priceless moments - when the songwriters reveal the songs they have written, when Walt Disney escorts Mrs Travers to Disneyland, and when it becomes clear that it is not the children that super-nanny Mary Poppins comes to save, when she appears at the Banks' house at No 17 Cherry Tree Lane.

For those who are familiar with the joys of Mary Poppins the movie, there is yet another layer to appreciate, while the emotional climax resounds to a much broader audience - reminding us there is always time to let go of the past.

This is a beautiful film with emotional ballast.

HANDY HINT:

1. In a small bowl, mix together arrowroot crumbs and melted butter until a crumbly, moist mixture forms.

2. Gently but firmly press the mixture into the bottom/sides of a pie dish and bake for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool completely.

3. In a medium bowl, use an electric mixture to beat your cream until it holds firm peaks. Set aside.

4. In a separate, mix cream cheese, vanilla, and sugar until smooth and creamy. Fold about 1/3 of the whipped cream into your cream cheese mixture to lighten it, then add the rest.

5. Gently fold until evenly incorporated and smooth. Spoon filling into your cooled pie crust, and spread it out in an even layer. Layer sliced strawberries in an overlapping rows around the top of the cream.

6. Melt chocolate + 1 tbsp cream, and stir until smooth and liquid. Drizzle melted chocolate over the top of the strawberries.

7. Stick the pie in the fridge for a few hours to allow the creamy filling to firm up.

Slice and serve immediately. Enjoy!!

Swimmers represent region at sprints

By Ryan Groube Tableland swimmers travelled to Brisbane at the weekend to compete in Queensland’s preeminent sprint championship.

The Queensland State Sprint Championships will be contested by the best swimmers in Australia and this year is headlined by Olympic gold medallist Emily Seebohm.

A record three swimmers from the Dimbulah Dolphins qualified for this year’s event, although Jack Petersen, 16 will be unable to attend despite registering a qualifying time.

The Dolphins will be represented at the meet by 14-year-old Ashley Zugno in the 50 metres backstroke while 15-year-old Zoe McDermott has qualified for the

50 metres freestyle and butterfly events.

Zoe also managed to register a qualifying time that will see her contest the open division 50 metre butterfly.

Dimbulah Dolphins secretary Maxine Smith said qualifying for the event was a major achievement for the local swimmers.

“It is very hard to make these qualifying times,” she said.

“You have to send down a proof that the swimmers made these times and if they do not better that time in Brisbane there are occasions where swimmers can be fined.

“Three [swimmers] is the most our club has ever had qualify and they are such an inspiration to our younger swimmers.”

The Mareeba Wildcats will

be represented by six swimmers at the championships.

Wildcats coach June Cotter said a late start to the season had made it difficult for the swimmers to post qualifying times.

“All of our swimmers worked really hard and had to play catch-up in order to get fit and ready for this meet in a very short amount of time,” she said.

“This is one of the biggest competitions our swimmers can take part in all year.”

The Mareeba Gladiators are facing a critical personnel shortage less than a month out from the start of the season, with barebones training sessions and the loss of several reserve players to the Mossman Sharks.

Gators coach Cameron McPherson said between ten and 11 of the Gladiators’ premiership-winning Reserves side had switched to the Mossman Club, following former coach David Grainer.

“The Reserves side had formed a huge part of my plans for the season and now most of them are gone,” he said.

“I’m disappointed in the Mossman Sharks and don’t feel it’s sustainable behaviour for their club.”

Sharks president Jason Fasano said that his club had hired Grainer as coach for 2014 but laughed off rumours that money had been offered to the Gladiators Reserves

players ahead of the coming season.

“Not one dollar has gone to any Mareeba player,” he said.

“We were fortunate to get David Grainer onboard as coach –he played his first A-Grade game for Mossman he lives here now.

“We are a struggling club and there’s nothing underhanded about any of this – we think Mareeba needs to concentrate on Mareeba.

Meanwhile the Gladiators need every able-bodied man they can get their hands on, with only about six A-grade players turned up to a rainy training session on February 6, drawing the ire of club president John Arcidiacono.

“The player turnout is disappointing to say the least,” Arcidiacono told The Express.

“It might be the wet weather keeping the boys at home but I want to say to them ‘there’s a sale on raincoats at Sports North, get over here to training’.”

“We have our first trial game

against Edmonton here at Davies Park on February 22 and there needs to be a drastic improvement in numbers turning up to training before then.”

New reserves coach Tonga Kose was nonetheless happy with the turnout for his own squad, with about 10 players arriving for training.

He refrained from making predictions about the season, saying he “didn’t want to count his eggs before they hatch.”

Former A-Grade player Ricky Shave has moved into the role of Under 18s coach.

“I want to use my own experience and bring the fun back to footy,” Shave said.

“I’ll still be working them hard.”

The Gladiators will play a second trial game against the Atherton Roosters at Davies Park on March 1 before their first season game against the Sharks in Mossman on March 15.

Upgrades for racing club

By Ryan Groube A MAJOR upgrade of the Mareeba Motor Racing Club (MMRC) is set to secure the long-term future of the club.

The State Government has announced the local speedway club has been successful in securing a $100,000 grant through the Get Playing funding program.

The money will be used to construct a retaining wall, a 350 metre chain ‘catch fence’ as well as install about 20 lights spaced between 25 and 30 metres apart.

Once the upgrade is complete, the club will be able to apply as a grade four track which will allow them to host a greater range of events including monster truck derbies.

MMRC president Darren MCculkin said once the upgrade was complete the club would have the

track inspected by Speedway Australia in the hope of falling “under their umbrella”.

“Increasing the standard of our track safety wise was something that just had to be done otherwise we were looking at our insurance costs inflating 10-fold each year,” he said.

“Once finished we will have an enclosed track, more spectator areas and we will be able to run all classes of racing legally. It is like a fresh start for the club.

“There is a lot of work to be done and we have a deadline by the end of the year but weather permitting we’d like to have most of it done by June or July and we want to be finished no later than September.”

Mr MCculkin said the club would also look at moving race meetings from Sunday to Saturday night once the upgrade was complete in a bid to attract more racers and spectators to

events.

“We want to move towards night racing so there is no more racing in the heat of Sunday for our competitors and our spectators,” he said.

“Many of our racers come from a long way away and it is a bit hard finishing racing at 4.30pm (on Sunday) for them to drive five or six hours back home in order to get to work on Monday.”

Member for Cook David Kempton made the announcement and said it was great to see the club recognised.

“I am delighted to see the hardworking members of this Mareeba club recognised through this funding round,” he said.

“Helping clubs like this one is what the Get Playing program is all about.”

MMRC’s first meeting of the year will be held on March 2.

Ex-Gladiator made Pride co-captain

By Ryan Groube Former Mareeba Gladiator Jason Roos (pictured) has been appointed co-captain of the far north’s Intrust Super Cup team the Northern Pride alongside former Cowboy Brett Anderson.

Star hooker Roos, 29, and centre Anderson, 27, have played a combined 203 games for the club since its inaugural season in 2008.

It is the first time the Pride has appointed co-captains, with Chris Sheppard (20082010) and Ty Williams (2011-2013) previously leading out the Barlow Park team.

Both players are born and bred in Far North Queensland, with Anderson hailing from Innisfail and Roos from Mareeba.

Roos said he was excited about the challenge facing him as leader of last year’s minor premiers.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to play for the Pride over the years, and now to captain the side on a full-time basis is an incredible honour,” he said.

Anderson, who has played in the NRL for North Queensland Cowboys, Parramatta Eels and Melbourne Storm, and is Pride’s all-time record try scorer with 54, said being named co-captain of the Pride is one of the highlights of his career.

“I’ve had the honour of captaining the side before in Ty’s absence, and is something I’ll always cherish,” he said.

“I can’t think of anything better than to be a local boy regularly leading out my local side in the Intrust Super Cup. “I can’t wait for the season to begin and hopefully Roosy and I can lead from the front.”

Pride Head Coach Jason Demetriou said the experienced duo were the perfect pair to lead the club into battle this year in the Intrust Super Cup. “Ando and Roosy are an absolute inspiration to the rest of the boys, and are superb role models for all our players, whether they’re the younger or older members of our playing group,” Demetriou said.

“Ando is NRL class and has been one of the form centres in the competition for the past few years, while Roosy also gives 110 per cent and is classy in everything he does.

“They’re both stand-out performers every week, and have grown into real leaders within the side.

“They’re also local boys who know what it means to play for your local club and represent your region.

“Shep (Chris Sheppard) and Ty (Williams) were perfect examples of this, and I think this has been one of the main reasons behind the Club’s success over the past few years.

“I have no doubt they’ll do a fantastic job and I know they can’t wait for the 2014 season to begin.”

The first game of the Intrust Super Cup season will see the Pride host Sunshine Coast Eagles at The Jungle (Barlow Park) on Saturday 1 March.
