areeba residents are being invited to quiz Queensland Government ministers on issues that matter to them at a community cabinet event next month. Premier Campbell Newman said he was looking forward to visiting the region and listening to the views and concerns of residents over the course of the two-day event. “I am excited to be getting up north for our 18th and final community cabinet of the year
and hearing how the people of Mareeba think we should be taking the region forward,” Mr Newman said. “My Government is committed to supporting this wonderful region and this will be a great opportunity for locals to discuss vital issues with myself, my ministers and the heads of government departments.” Member for Cook David Kempton said he was delighted to be hosting the community cabinet in Mareeba. “Only a few months ago, a community cabinet
was held in Cooktown. It will be fantastic for residents to have this event come to Mareeba too,” Mr Kempton said. “We have a lot to offer as a region and I’m delighted to be part of a government that is committed to growing north Queensland. “I encourage all residents to request a meeting with a minister, either through my office or by submitting a request form.” Meetings with Ministers will be held at Mareeba International Club, Vaughan Street, Mareeba, from 3pm until 5pm on Sunday November 30.

Under 8’s celebrated By Justin Fris SCORES of happy children flocked to St Anthony’s Parish School in Dimbulah last Friday, where they celebrated ‘Under 8’s Day’ with a series of play-based activity stations. The event not only housed St Anthony’s students, with children from Chillagoe, Dimbulah and Mutchilba State School’s making a special visit for the day. Above all, the most satisfying component of the day was the inclusiveness. All children were made to feel accepted, especially children
from the pre-prep age group. After receiving a special gift bag and initial instructions from their teachers, children floated around the various stations with unrivalled passion. Stations ranged from: jewellery making, face painting, woodwork, library time, inspecting a fire engine along with completing a tricky obstacle course. St Anthony’s Principal Scott Whitters highlighted the importance of such events, as it gives young children an early opportunity to build lifelong friendships.
“In many cases, the children don’t get many opportunities to see each other,” he said. “It is also provides a good chance for parents and teachers from all over the region to have a chat.” By far the most fun was had at the fire station activity, where rural fire service volunteers displayed their equipment and the importance of being safe in a fire situation. All the children listened intently to every word spoken, then had fun exploring one of the most important vehicles that travels on a country road.
Jonty Taylor sizes up the fire equipment.

The girls from Travel Experience.com got into the pink theme all in the name of the fight against cancer.
The fight against cancer was loud and clear on Friday night at the Mareeba RSL, when local girls got together now, to keep the girls together later. The inaugural ‘ladies night in’ fundraiser was hailed a success, with more than 150 ladies enjoying the night out, with proceeds donated to the Cancer Council. The night included more than 16 local exhibitors, with products and services on display and a naturopathic talk by Kim Stedman. There were fashion parades by Intimo lingerie and The Dress and Beyond; with the models adorned in Park Lane Jewellery and made
even more stunning with hair and make-up by Gallery of Beauty and Hairmania. Guests also enjoyed a three course meal with a difference in shades of pink and an entertaining skit from long time local cancer fundraisers, ‘The Sisterhood Relay for Life Team’. Mareeba RSL Functions co-ordinator Tracey O’Shea said she was overwhelmed with the support and is looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better. The fun and entertainment continued on into the night with karaoke and a mechanical bull in the beer garden.

‘Angels came to save me’ our checklist.” Dr Brown was reflective in response to his feelings during the treatment, by recounting the series of feelings and symptoms that he endured. “There was a crushing pain across the chest,” he said. “You also get this feeling of impending doom; but then I got lucky, as angels came to save me.” This experience should serve as a reminder to the community that no one is immune to a heart attack. Mr Rablin stressed the need for everyone to exercise caution and get tested if they feel unwell. Dr Brown echoed Mr Rablin’s words and said that time is the primary factor during a heart attack. “Even if you are fit, you could still be at risk of a heart attacks,” he said. “The larger amount of muscle you can preserve, the greater the individual’s chances of survival.”

Dr Anthony Brown was reunited with special emergency service personnel last Monday at the Mareeba Ambulance Station. The reunion was fitting and special, due to the fact that these individuals came to Dr Brown’s aid in his hour of need. After completing a 50km bike race (which he won), the mountain bike enthusiast began to feel an intense pain in his back, which moved toward his chest. Dr Brown, a seasoned manager of the Tablelands and Mareeba hospitals, was acutely aware he was entering into cardiac arrest; and time was a factor for survival. “I have exercised every day since I was 13 and although I have a family history of heart disease, I never expected that I would suffer a heart attack,” he said. Fundraising for the new vehicle included a Charity Golf Day, ‘Bathurst Day’ Sausage Sizzle and Meat Tray Raffle; as well as entering the old vehicle in the Maize Festival Parade. All the while Lions Club members walked alongside, filling collection buckets with donations of almost $1000 from the general public. Local businesses brought in further donations, with the goal surpassed in record time. Lions Club of Atherton is proud of its long history of support for Atherton Meals on Wheels, having taken up the challenge of building the original facility on land made available in the show grounds in 1973-74; and subsequently working on the much needed extensions to the building in 1984-85.
A celebratory sausage sizzle held at the Atherton Meals on Wheels facility last Thursday saw Mil Clay of the Atherton Lions Club officially hand over the keys of a brand new vehicle, to Meals on Wheels representative Pat Gane. Replacing the organization’s current 20 year old Suzuki van, the new Nissan Qashqai Auto Wagon is a welcomed addition to the Meals on Wheels fleet. Not only will they be able to deliver more meals in the district, but are now equipped to transport staff and volunteers to Cairns for essential training. Project organiser Mil Clay said: “We heard down the grapevine that Meal On Wheels were looking for a new vehicle and Lions thought that would be a great project,” he said. “We were all very surprised at how quickly the community raised the funds for a new vehicle. “We would like to thank the business community and general public of Ather-

Mother Nature’s Tablelands water supply is choking in its current surroundings.
Dumping could affect our water By Justin Fris MAREEBA’s water supply is choking under the pressure it faces from illegal dumping of domestic furniture and waste. Irrigation channels along the Mareeba-Dimbulah Road in Mutchilba have become a hotspot for opportunistic polluters, who appear to have no respect for their fellow citizens. Picturing the surface area of 10 full size tennis courts worth of rubbish and a limited supply of volunteers on hand to assist, is only one part of the story. As Sunwater Mareeba Service Manager Charlie Martens explains, the future of quality water within the township could teeter if the dodgy dumping continues. “It beggars belief that members of the public would have such disregard for our community and our local environment,” he said. “Not only

Cooktown wins ‘tidy town’ award By Justin Fris COOKTOWN has officially been awarded as “Queensland’s Tidiest Town” in another victory for the State’s Far North region. Seeing off 73 (predominantly southern) rivals for the coveted mantle is no mean feat and this was reflected by Cook Shire Mayor, Peter Scott.
“The community and Council have worked hard to achieve this and we hope with the recognition and promotion, we’ll see a new influx of visitors and tourists to the area,” Mayor Scott said. A rare ability for the town to compete in every major assessment criteria was not lost on Keep Queensland Beautiful CEO, David Curtin.
Exciting new changes for the competition are afoot in 2015, with a new smart phone app being released for the general public. This will especially provide a raft of information for visitors to the area on all categories that the town will be assessed on. Member for Cook David Kempton (originally from Cooktown) also joined in congratulating the town’s mighty achievement.

Candlenut Steiner School Year 10 students in the Tiwi Islands.
Year 10’s travel to Tiwi Islands By Justin Fris THE Candlenut Steiner School in Kuranda has a very unique way of educating students about certain regions in Australia. Therefore it comes as no surprise – several Year 10 students had a wonderful time during their recent trip to the Tiwi Islands. Located in one of the most remote parts of Australia, students learned about certain hardships faced in a tiny remote community, along with doing their bit to help those in need. Students completed a series of tasks during their trip, which ranged from cleaning the local pool, to participating in school based events on the island. All members of the touring party built lifelong friendships during their stay and have no doubt forged an unbreakable insight into life in a remote community.
Hayley’s award ‘fitting for club’ By Justin Fris HAYLEY Skinner (pictured) was recently crowned “Miss Personality” on behalf of local pony clubs within the Tablelands region. In order to be crowned, participants needed to score heavily in two components; the competition, along with local community fundraising. An arduous day of competition awaited Ms Skinner, who was up at 5am ensuring her horse was looking in top form for the contest. “No one from our club had won the quest for the last seven years,” she said. “I personally believe the victory is a very fitting reward for the club.” After completing her riding portion of the event, Miss Skinner faced judges, who asked her several questions (pony club related and general knowledge) which she was required to answer. The assessment criteria for the competition was quite extensive; everything from
presentation of the horse, down to how Miss Skinner delivered her address to the judging panel. Upon reflection, her adversaries proved to be a mighty hurdle to overcome, as the competition was eagerly fought over a number of levels. “My fellow senior entrants were actually a year older than me,” she said. Miss Skinner said she learned a wealth of experience from the competition and wanted to thank the organisers for the putting the event together. “I would like to thank every member of
the pony club,” she said. “The instructors and families within the club are excellent and I love every one of them to bits.”

Community celebrates Halloween in Mareeba By Justin Fris FAIRIES, ghouls and skeletons roamed freely down the streets of Mareeba on Friday night, which may have startled some locals relaxing after the working week. There was no need for locals to batten down for an apocalypse though, as it was nothing more than cheerful kids going about their trick of treating trade. Halloween, which originated in France and is celebrated feverishly in the U.S, is eagerly anticipated by children all over the world. However with modern day living, it needs to be completed in a very safe manner. Cue the incentive shared by Samantha Malcolm and dedicated local parents in Mareeba. The experience they provide for the children really is out of the top draw. Congregating on the outer fringes of the

Mareeba heritage museum at 5.30pm, a splendid feast of cocktail frankfurts, party pies and orange frosted doughnuts awaited the children to assist in their preparations. Groups of children were then divided and then the fun of the night spun into life as the clock ticked past 6.15pm. To maximise enjoyment and ensure safety for all, Samantha had pre-arranged designated houses and streets for the children to visit for their trick or treating. They were joined every step of the way by parents and local teaching staff, who also dressed up for the occasion. This ingenious method of ensuring children can enjoy the practice of trick or treating safely, should leave our metro counterparts taking a leaf out of Samantha’s book in due course. Dean’s exciting career choice By Carl Portella 23 year old Dean Bestmann is a selfconfessed ‘adrenaline junkie’. The Mareeba local studied engineering at the University of Queensland for two years, before realising that it wasn’t for him and decided to pursue something more exciting. Now an Artillery Observer in the Australian Army, Dean has found all the excitement he could want and more. “What drew me to the job was the sense of excitement; I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie,” Dean said. “As with any job you get the good and the bad, but I think everyone should do some time in the Australian Defence Force. “I’ve grown as a person since I joined.” Dean plays an important role in the discovery, reporting and dissemination of battlespace intelligence. He works as part of a small team of up to six soldiers; tasked with finding and supressing enemy positions using artillery guns, naval surface guns, armed
helicopters and ground attack aircraft. “When you see the bombs drop in the movies and you see the guys on the radio calling them in, that’s what we do,” he said. “The excitement and the variation of what we do is a big selling point; it’s not the same thing every day, so you never get bored.” The Artillery Observer is a soldier who uses and operates basic and advanced target acquisition equipment such as binoculars, laser rangefinders and laser target markers to locate enemy forces. As a member of the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery, Dean plays a vital role on the frontline of Australia’s Defence. The Army has built a formidable reputation based on the core values of courage, initiative, respect and teamwork. The Army is currently recruiting for Artillery Observers. Conflict over Showgrounds By Justin Fris PLANS for the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) to reconfigure community purpose of the Atherton Showgrounds have been wholeheartedly panned by the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Show Society Committee (ATASS). A report released by the TRC on October 16 called for the current draft Land Management Plan to be amended; which would mean community purposes for the Showgrounds could be updated to reflect current demands. As show commitments only take up three weeks of the year (leaving 49 relatively unused), the TRC is exploring an opportunity to update the venue management strategy with other users of the facility.
This notion has been hosed down by the ATASS, who believe the TRC is ‘ignoring’ other alternatives of managing the grounds. Show Manager Jenny Grech is adamant extra expansion of facilities would lead to future compromised shows. “We would really like the TRC to reverse their decision,” she said. “We can’t park our dodgem cars in another building if space has been taken up by new buildings.” TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said council had been in consultation with the ATASS for five years, with numerous meetings held in order to negotiate on the matter. Mayor Lee Long added that the Showgrounds was a ‘heavily used multi-use’ facility, which was reflected in the need to create a newly formed ‘Showground User Group’
earlier in 2014. The primary focus of the user group is to brainstorm alternatives which could maximise use of the venue, without unduly affecting ATASS operations. Mrs Grech said that all members of the ATASS were open to the facility being used for events other than the show, but they believe these events could be held in the current configuration of the venue. Mayor Lee Long concluded by stating the draft Land Management Plan (LMP) of the Showgrounds would require ‘considerable amendments’ over the coming months to ensure it was ‘truly workable’ for all members of the community. The Express will keep readers updated with any new developments of the matter, during upcoming TRC general meetings.

In our Museum we have many interactive displays and artefacts. Top favourites are the old telephones where a three-way conversation is possible - though we have to sometimes demonstrate which end of the telephone to speak into. Next is the schoolroom - slate and slate pencils and smelly rags for slate cleaning. Our 100 year old stereoscope is proof that 3-D pictures are not a recent invention as kids would believe.
Winding up the old gramophone always has children enthralled, although one youngster demanded to know where the remote was so he could “change da channel.” Our cash carrier, from the old Jack & Newell store, has the kids spellbound and ducking their heads as the little money container is catapulted up to the cashier’s office and back again with the change from the purchase. Out back the old Dunny holds pride of place with a voice yelling from inside, “Hey! I’m in here!” On looking under the door and seeing only a pair of stuffed long pants with boots attached, one likely lad yelled a panicked report that “the bloke’s been sucked under!” But there is still more. Come and look. Have a go at the old lawn mowers - pump some water - start up the old tractor... churn some butter... and ADMISSION IS FREE!

Planting a Windbreak... The best windbreak is one made up of a mixture of species, and at least 2 but preferably 3-5 plants deep. Contrary to popular belief, windbreaks made of a single row of a single species are not very effective. THE CASE AGAINST SINGLE ROW / SINGLE SPECIES WINDBREAKS Windbreaks composed of a single species or rows are not very effective for a number of reasons: 1. Single Species Windbreaks: Plants of the same species have leaves of the same shape and size, and grow to more or less the same shape and mature height. Therefore even gaps form amongst and between the plants, creating perfect tunnels for the wind to rush through. Even if they are planted close enough to merge they will form a barrier of even height. The wind is forced over the top in an even stream and turbulence may result on the leeward side. 2. Runts: In any batch of plants there are always one or two which do not grow as well as the others. In a single species planting, these runts stand out like a sore toe and look unsightly. Worse still, they create big gaps for the wind to tunnel through. This situation is difficult to remedy. Removing the runts and replacing them with new plants rarely works (unless done very early) since the new plants cannot compete with the vigorous and strong root systems of the established plants on either side. 3. Single Row Windbreaks: Windbreaks consisting of a single row of plants such as Tallowwoods or Pines are not as effective as people believe. Such windbreaks may be reasonably good for the first few years while the trees are young and bushy (although Tallowwoods are brittle and not good windbreaks in their own right anyway), but eventually they grow into trees with trunks which allow the wind to tunnel through at the base almost unbroken. At this stage the owners want to remedy the situation by planting smaller bushy plants amongst the large trees. This does not work for two reasons: Plants planted close to the base of existing big trees will not grow satisfactorily since they cannot compete with established root systems close by. Plants planted beneath big trees do not become bushy – instead they grow tall and lanky as they stretch upwards for light. The only real cure for this situation is to rip the windbreak out and start again, or plant a second windbreak about 10m behind the original one. From an aesthetic and environmental point of view, single species / single row windbreaks are a blot on the landscape. Rows of single species never occur in nature and are therefore jarring to the eye. Birds and other wildlife are rarely attracted to a single species situation, and monocultures are havens for pests and diseases. THE CASE FOR MIXED SPECIES / MULTIPLE ROW WINDBREAKS 1. Different species have different shapes and different foliage. Therefore a windbreak consisting of mixed species planted at random has uneven gaps which break up the wind rather that allowing it to tunnel through. 2. Different species grow to different heights. Therefore a mixed planting is uneven in height and the wind is broken up as it goes over the windbreak. Turbulence on the other side is therefore prevented. 3. Different species grow at different rates. Therefore runts are less noticeable and are of little consequence to the effectiveness of the windbreak. 4. Windbreaks should always be at least 2 rows of plants deep, preferably 3-5. Even in a mixed planting there will be gaps in a single row which will allow tunnelling. If the plants are planted in two or more rows by zigzagging or at random, then wind that tunnels through the first row will be broken by the second or subsequent rows. 5. Mixed plantings in multiple rows are aesthetically pleasing since the mixture of foliage types, shapes and colours, and of tree heights and shapes, blends into the natural landscape. While most windbreaks are a straight line for practical reasons, a multiple row random planting reduces the jarring effect of the line. Birds and other wildlife are at home in mixed plantings, and their presence helps to control pests.
Happy gardening, and see you at Yuruga!
Maria Parenti has an undeniable passion for teaching.
By Justin Fris ATHERTON Primary School teacher Maria Parenti has topped the class in more ways than one. She is truly in elite company, being nominated as one of 60 teachers across the nation to receive a 2014 ASG National Excellence in Teaching State and Territory award. Tertiary qualified in both education and journalism, Maria was resoundingly nominated by the parents of her current year four class. Maria has been teaching for 15 years, while she has currently spent five years within the Atherton State Primary School community. Widely regarded for her warm devotion and kindness,
Maria takes feedback from her students very seriously. Every six months, she will ask for her students to complete a short survey; with her sharing the overall findings with her students in a bid to further improve her teaching ability. With a passion for writing, it is no surprise her students are now fully capable of producing multi sequenced paragraphs. And if educational advancement wasn’t enough for the children, the sheer number of unique visitors in the classroom would be the clincher. The Express would like to congratulate both Maria and the Atherton community on this sensational result.

Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service
OFFICIAL OPENING
MONDAY NOVEMBER 10TH
As Minister responsible for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, I offer my congratulations to the Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service which will officially open additional Clinic space in Mareeba on 10 November 2014. This service is well regarded across Mareeba and the surrounding area and the opening of this new building will provide much needed space for the delivery of primary health care services. I am pleased that the new Clinic has been funded from Australian Government Medicare income, which, in addition to grant funding, supports services such as Mareeba to increase access to primary health care services to improve the health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Senator Fiona Nash Assistant Minister for Health, Australian Government The opening of the new Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service Clinic is a triumph of determination and persistence. After many years of providing a much needed medical service to the Indigenous community in less than ideal circumstances, the Mulungu Health Clinic, having moved into this modern, purpose built complex is now at the forefront of providing high quality medical care in a culturally aware and caring environment. I would like to congratulate all of those who have driven this project from the start. The challenge of finding suitable land for the complex, the long struggle to raise the required capital, and then settling on a design fit for purpose has been both a challenge and an achievement. The Mulungu Health Clinic and the highly professional and dedicated staff working there are of fundamental importance in ensuring the long term improvement of the health status of many members of our community. mshs Presentation Night Mareeba State High School students and their families gathered for their annual presentation night last Tuesday October 28, where both high and quiet achievers were acknowledged for their academic excellence for the 2014 schooling year. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore, the keynote speaker of the evening, set the agenda by addressing the year 12 students in their final year of high school; as they prepared to embark on life’s journey. The message was simple: “Work hard and don’t be afraid to dream.” With Numerous awards handed out to students from all grades and for all areas of academic study, cultural
and community achievement, it all eventually came down to the elite awards. The top six awards were as follows: Year 10 DuxKatelyn Dickenson, Year 11 Male Dux Shaun Sclippa, Year 11 Female Dux Carla Newlands, along with Mathew Penn, who was named Dux for year 12. The Caltex Best all Rounder award went to Monique Ebner and the academic shield for 2014 was presented to Leichhardt house. E! RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS
entertainment There are two brand new blockbuster movies at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this week . Mathew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, John Lithgow and Michael Caine, head the star studded cast of the epic spectacular INTERSTELLAR. Brad Pitt and Shia Le Boeuf
FURY
star in the critically acclaimed slice of life drama FURY, set in the closing days of the second world war. Also showing for the last time this Wednesday, are GONE GIRL, TAMMY and ANNABELLE – all top flicks, this is the last time to see them on your local big screen .
diversity of the personalities and backgrounds of crew members is reinforced in this edgy scene. The sense of camaraderie shared within the tank is another matter; it's an interesting mix and Ayer places great importance on the dynamic between them. 'This is the best job I ever had,' is a line we often hear. Additional to Pitt and Lerman are Michael Pena, Shia LaBoeuf, Jon Bernthal. They all contribute greatly. Fury is a gritty, realistic war drama that emphases the horrors, futility and devastation of war only too well. It is almost like being there.
INTERSTELLAR April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, battle-hardened army sergeant Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Out-numbered, out-gunned, and with rookie soldier Norman (Logan Lerman) thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. Review by Louise Keller: Ideals are peaceful; history is violent, says Brad Pitt's Wardaddy in this heavy artillery slice of life film in which the vibrations of the incessant gun battles resound through every bone in our body. David Ayer's film succeeds in creating a claustrophobic mood, prising us into the Sherman tank in 1945 Germany with its melting pot of tension and mix of personalities within the 4-man crew, The dialogue might have been easier to understand, too. 'We're not here for right or wrong; we're here to kill them,' Wardaddy says of the Nazis. Our view of this tough, grimy world surrounded by mud comes through the eyes of Logan Lerman's young protagonist, a 60 word a minute clerk named Norman Ellison, recruited against his will into active battle and whose journey goes from zero to hero. When we meet Norman, he is a quivering wreck, unable to come to terms with the notion of using a gun or killing anyone. He soon learns that it is either kill or be killed. There is no sugar coating on the harsh life lessons that Wardaddy offers. The scene in which Wardaddy forces Norman to kill a SS Officer is highly confrontational. By comparison, the sequence in which Wardaddy encourages Norman to lose his virginity to Emma (Alicia von Rittberg), a beautiful young girl they encounter in a war-torn town, and whose palm professes she will have one love in her life, is bittersweet. A whole gamut of emotions takes place in this sequence, changing dramatically when the other members of the crew arrive: fear, desire, uncertainty. The

In the near future Earth has been devastated by drought and famine, causing a scarcity in food and extreme changes in climate. When humanity is facing extinction, a mysterious rip in the space-time continuum is discovered, giving mankind the opportunity to widen their lifespan. A group of explorers must travel beyond our solar system in search of a planet that can sustain life. The crew of the Endurance are required to think bigger and go further than any human in history as they embark on an interstellar voyage, into the unknown. However, through the wormhole, one hour is the equivalent of seven years back on Earth, so the mission won't work if the people on Earth are dead by the time they pull it off. And Coop, the pilot of the Endurance, must decide between seeing his children again and the future of the human race.

The LAND Export class action is welcomed news By Justin Fris QUEENSLAND LNP Senator Ian Macdonald has declared his support for northern cattle (NT) producers seeking compensation against the Federal Government, for production loss three years ago. During a turbulent period for the Gillard (Labor) government in 2011, a total ban of live export was enforced for a period of three months. Live export is a practice which polarises the community; some believe it is barbaric, while others firmly believe the trade ensures Australians stay employed and millions of dollars stay injected in our economy. Senator McDonald called on the Abbott government to commence meaningful negotiations with agricultural stakeholders, despite being in opposition during the ban. “I do not believe that the in-
dustry which is already financially crippled by the ban, should be asked to take on the cost and stress of a speculative court case, when the Government should have made this unnecessary,” he said. The temporary closure of the trade has lasting effects across Australia, with businesses here on the Tablelands no exception. North Qld Saleyards Chairman Gerry Collins said many local producers still feeling the effects of the ban to this day. “The ban impacted higher numbers of cattle entering the saleyards,” he said. “In turn this created an oversupply, which resulted in a downturn for the overall market.” Mr Collins said the Tablelands region (along with the saleyards) would be hoping for a positive outcome of the class action suit. “The trade affects everyone within a rural community, especially in the northern part of Australia,” he said.
Normantown office launch
FEDERAL MINISTER for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce will be on hand for the Gulf Savannah Development office launch in Normanton on Tuesday November 4th at 4pm.The Shire of Carpentaria generously donated the office earlier this year, to give GSD a base of operations in the region. Ernie Camp (GSD Chair) said the launch promised to be a very social occasion with Mayors and CEOs from the six gulf shires attending, along with industry leaders and several members of
the original committee, which formed in the 1970’s. While many will still be celebrating the Melbourne Cup, the leaders of the Gulf region will be joining Minister Joyce, Senator Canavan and Senator McGrath in the new GSD office at 60 Landsborough St. On Tuesday the 4th at 10am GSD will have a display of memorabilia collected over the last 40 years, with a complimentary morning tea. Everyone who has been involved with GLADA/GSD since 1974 is welcomed to attend.

Mackay Sugar holds AGM Mackay Sugar recently held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the year ending May 2014; presenting its financial results and discussing the year’s highlights and challenges with over 500 of its 1,000 shareholders. The financial results included a profit of $5.2 million, a decline on the $16.3 million profit recorded in the 2013 financial year. Mackay Sugar Chairman Andrew Cappello stated in his opening address that the company achieved a credible financial performance despite the financial year involving a poor crop and the lowest sugar price the industry had seen in seven years. “Mackay Sugar handled a crop of 5 million tonnes (Mt) and 587,000 tonnes (t) in Mackay and Mossman respectively in the 2013 season (2012 season: 5.6Mt; 508,867t); and produced more than 747,092t of raw sugar in Mackay and 74,110t in Mossman (2012 season: 824,999t and 63,492t),” he said. “World market sugar prices were low, with an average of $410.70 achieved during the financial year.” Mackay Sugar Chief Executive Officer Quinton Hildebrand provided shareholders with an account of the operational performance for the current season and strategies aimed at improving results for the Company in the

In pursuit of a sea change Mareeba Hire, a significant business opportunity with a proven track record supported by financials and a list price available to qualified buyers, is being marketed by agent Dan Brown at Colliers International Cairns for sale by private treaty. Dan Brown advised; “Bob Neate, a local Mareeba identity, established Mareeba Hire in 1988 and has methodically built the business into a profitable broad based business.” It is located in Keeble Street, just to the west of Mareeba’s central business district, consolidated on Byrnes Street. “Bob has bought a boat and the sale will free him up to enjoy it, but there are also other projects on the horizon.” The business, herein referred to as Mareeba Hire, includes Tableland Temporary Fence Hire and Tableland Party Hire, all of which can be operated as separate businesses. Mareeba Hire is a substantial broad based, cash flow business, developed and consolidated over 26 years of trading with established good will. It is one of only two independent hire businesses in the Far North Queensland region and services a diverse customer base of Local and State Government, corporate, mining, construction and private customers from across the Tablelands, south to Ravenshoe, west to Chillagoe, north to Cooktown and the Cape, including the coastal strip north and south of Cairns. The sale of the business includes all the registered business names, branding, the website, the customer database and current hire rates held by the business, together with its comprehensive inventory of plant and equipment. The sale also includes an extensive range of commercial plant and equipment, building and home renovation equipment, 11,424 linear metres of temporary fencing panels and a range of marquees and party hire
equipment. Mareeba Hire is the exclusive Tableland supplier of temporary fencing panels. The business premises, which total an area of approximately 1,676m2 on part of a large light industrial zoned freehold allotment, are available for lease with a 3 x 3 x 3 year lease which would accommodate substantial growth of the business. The maintenance workshop and wash down bay is EPA approved and access to the rear of the premises is being secured by a registered easement. Dan Brown said; “In summary, it is a profitable broad based cash flow business, established 26 years ago, with there being strong potential to grow the business. The offer of a secure lease presents a great opportunity for a capable buyer to invest in the lucrative hire industry. Interested parties are invited to contact marketing agent Dan Brown of Colliers International on 0417 342 773 to secure a detailed Information Memorandum and to arrange for a private inspection.

Bye: Lakers. MAREEBA BASKETBALL INC. Closely contested Senior Grade Fixtures were a feature of the Mareeba Basketball competition decided last week. Topshot Thunder and Majestic Gallopers recorded narrow victories in their respective Mens encounters. Both clashes proved interesting but a disappointing factor being that all these teams were lacking player numbers. The Senior Ladies competition saw
Highschool Divas register an important 50 to 39 win over Baiada Steggles. While Killers failed narrowly to record their first win of the Season, going down to Tequila Slammers by 35 to 37. A vital fixture is schedules for this Tuesday night when Baiada Steggles clash with Gummaz. Certainly a win by the Gummaz combination will keep Gummaz leading the Ladies competition. However a loss will then find Highschool Divas on top of the competition points table. In Junior division fixtures, Timberwolves and All Stars Under 16’s Juniors are likely to join Phoenix for Division 1 Semi-Finals, after recording victories. However defeats to Cobras and Warriors could well affect their prospects of a Division 1 finish. With a good 4 points win over Warriors, no doubt improving the prospects of Dommage in their quest for top honours towards the final week of the Summer Season. While results in the young Under 14’s and Under 12’s fixtures still has all teams in the hunt for the Championship Titles. Atherton Bowls Men: Tuesday 28 October Winner P.Way M.Pluschke F.Tudini. Chequered flag fairwells speedway season in Mareeba By Justin Fris
Angelo Tudini with his A-Grade trophy.
MAREEBA Speedway provided a breathless finish to the 2014 season, with every driver testing their car to the absolute limit. As the sun burned like an unforgiving parking inspector, the crowd sought refuge in the shaded grandstands, in order to get the best view of the action. The format of the meet was fairly straightforward; each class had a series of heats, with the feature races held later in the afternoon. Some members of the crowd even got the rare opportunity to get behind the wheel of a speedway car with A-Grade driver Angelo Tudini; as part of the Mareeba Speedway’s ‘come and try’ program. On the track, there were several drivers who took no chances in their pursuit of victory. In CGrade’s feature race, Tony Vilella was at his uncompromising best as he saw off the chasing pack. Similar could be said for Todd Stevens in the F500’s who was simply streets ahead in his division all day. Leading by a Kennedy electorate postcode, eyes moved to the battle for 2nd, where William Fayle narrowly held off Jared Demares. The Sprint Sedans saw an intriguing three way Natasha and Kodee McDonnell particpated in the tie in the feature event of the card, with Rick Ings ‘come and try’ program. holding off Kylie Rosa. Lucy Reed finished 2014 in style, despite finthe fridge. ishing behind Mark Alba in the B-Grade feature event. “Women in league” raising awareness MISS CDRL entrant Jasmine Brown had a wonderful first season playing one of the greatest games of all, rugby league. Playing in a combined Malanda/ Ravenshoe High School side as part of the Cowboys Schoolgirls Challenge, Brown felt she could crank it up a few notches and help others. Through her involvement in both Miss CDRL and “Women in League”, Brown and local stakeholders have raised money
in a bid to improve cancer medical facilities in our region. COUCH Cairns (Brown’s desired cause) received support from Coach Des Pascoe, along with Member for Dalrymple, Shane Knuth. COUCH Cairns Company Director Ron Holden met with the trio recently and received a cheque. The money will be put toward building a new wellness centre for patients.

AFTER appearing certain to record outright victory, the Mareeba Bandits were snuffed out by a dogged Norths rearguard on Sunday. The visitors, who began the day’s play on 9/205, declared prior to a ball being bowled for the day. After skittling the hosts for 25 in their first innings, the Bandits felt they had enough runs to play with. But some smart cricket and the searing heat resulted in Norths posting a score of 220; which meant the Bandits fell five runs short of outright victory. The Bandits would have been disheartened with this result, as at one stage they had the hosts at 7/82 and bat-
tling to stay in the match. Despite a dirty day for the team, Brendan Payne took 4/63 (off 15 overs) and received solid support from Brett Brewer. Alas, Lachie Ford was away on representative duty and couldn’t bolster the bowling attack. Despite pocketing first innings points, the Bandits had to dramatically change their line-up for day two, with injuries and representative duty ravaging their squad. Zac Wilce, Damian Briko and Brett Girganti all received promotion from the younger grades and acquitted themselves well. The Bandits would also like to acknowledge the dedication of Brett Pearce, who came out of retirement, in order for the Bandits to field a complete team for the day.
Tolga SS aim to hit southerners for six CRICKETING bloodlines in Tolga received another seal of approval, after the recent successes of Tolga State School in 20/20 format of the game. Senior Girls representatives have been in breathtaking form of late, coming up trumps at both interschool and regional level. These victories mean the team will join their two teachers, Mr Lamperd and Mrs McGregor, on a trip down to Brisbane, where they will compete against their south east counterparts. Should the ultimate dream be realised, the girls
would get the rare opportunity to grace the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for a national tournament. The upper primary school rules of cricket’s hybrid version are different to that viewed on national television. Matches last only 40 minutes and each player gets the same amount of batting and bowling time, regardless of ability. The Express would like to wish the girls all the best on their endeavours in Brisbane and will provide a wrap up of their matches in the coming weeks.

Inspirational indigenous rugby league carnival By Justin Fris
A wall of defenders awaits this darting back.
BUKKI Buna (Yarrabah) cantered to a 3616 victory over Julaymba (Mossman) in the recent Gordonvale indigenous rugby league carnival at Alley Park. The victors ran in six tries, with Hezron Murgha, Oswald Fourmile, Milton Mossman, Scott Yeatman, Brandon and Daniel Tatipata all getting on the scoresheet. Burt Hansen also was handy with the boot, chalking up four conversions from
six attempts, as his teammates ushered in the tag of carnival champions. The success was all the more remarkable, considering they started the carnival with an early loss. GIRLC organiser Jason Joinbee said the event attracted a large crowd and an exceptional quality of rugby league. “It was really good to see nice, clean football,” he said. “We worked along with the QRL, who helped to ensure the event ran well.” As with any indigenous sporting car-
Jumping further into sporting glory By Justin Fris LOCAL athlete Deane Alterio is continuing to jump further into local sporting glory, if his latest run of form is anything to go by. When you first meet Deane, you look into the eyes of a humble athlete, who is getting the most out of his talent. Representing the Peninsula School Sports Regional Team at the recent Qld track and field championships in Brisbane is impressive enough; but competing in the multi event (4 events) and topping the points standings, well, that is just pure class.
Alterio has worked closely with Coach Brendan Peters for over a year now; and the performances have reflected the miles both have put in. Complimented with a good diet and regular training program, Alterio has been able to translate his athletic ability into his major love; football. Under the tutorage of Ronnie Leporati at the recent national futsal championships, the pacy striker received selection for Australia’s upcoming futsal tour of Malaysia. With supportive parents and proven coach, many athletes may buckle at the thought of future challenges; but Alterio
nival, the level of skill and teamwork on field was only matched by the exceptional cultural hospitality off it. Kids were catered for from the opening kickoff, with plenty of entertainment issues to keep them busy while other family members cheered on their friends and relatives. Along with the traditional fare of pies and chips, a number of localised indigenous delicacies were on the canteen menu; which were a runaway success with the crowd.
Deane Alterio has mastered several sports at a young age.
appears optimistic about his future in sport. “I just try to stay calm and relaxed,” he said. “Brendan is almost always alongside me at every event and encourages me if I might be having an off day.” Alterio’s dedication to study was also shared during our conversation, with the upcoming national pentathlon event a prime example. “I got invited to the upcoming pentathlon nationals, but unfortunately it clashes with my school graduation,” he said. “So I decided to decline my invite, as I don’t want to miss the opportunity to graduate with my friends.”

By Justin Fris MAREEBA’s gymnasts returned to the Tablelands after a successful competition in Townsville. Coaching director Kelly Tulloch was extremely satisfied with the team’s display, after 28 of the 51 team members placed highly in their chosen discipline. Three gymnasts stood head and shoulders above the entire field of the event, with Nerissa

Masoo (Level 2 Open WAG), Jensen Battistin (Level 1u7 MAG) and Frank Tulloch (Level 4 Open MAG) taking out 1st place in their respective categories. Ryan Pearce and Bohdi Dunn were also inches away from claiming victory in their competitions as well. However there will be no rest for the Mareeba team, with their upcoming Atherton competition taking place over November 8 and 9.

ROUND SIX of the Far North Queensland Motorsports Club Bitumen Sprint Series welcomed several new entrants, along with healthy crowds filling the circumference of the track on Sunday October 19. Michael Anderson scorched to victory in his Nissan Skyline rs4 GTR, but he was kept busy all day by Sam Bowden and Cody Satch-
well, who were hot on his heels. All three finished in the final three placings, but several other riders had a successful day out in a variety of classes. It was a busy weekend for Satchwell, who travelled to Mareeba on the day, after competing in the Townsville Bitumen Series the previous day. The next round of the Bitument Sprint series will be held at the Mako Trac, Mareeba on Sunday November 16.
