Political minefield

ommunity groups voiced their concerns about possible mining over Mt Mulligan with the overarching question being: are the economic benefits worth more than cultural heritage?

The information day, held last Wednesday, was attended by approximately 100 people with guest speakers from indigenous groups and The Lock the Gate Alliance.

Talk revolved around Mt Mulligan, the location of Mantle Mining’s coal exploration, and the possible negative effects on the environment and sacred sites.

A subsidiary of Mantle Mining Corp Ltd, Trafford Coal Pty Ltd, is the holder of an Exploration Permit for Coal (EPC), which gives them exclusive rights to explore for specific minerals, but the company would have to apply for a separate permit to mine. Lock the Gate Alliance President

Drew Hutton said the meeting at the Racecourse was more than an information day and was a chance “to lay the basis for a campaign”.

“In this particular case, it is cultural heritage that is the key issue. This is one of the most sacred sites in Queensland, it’s like mining Uluru.

“There would seem to be an enormous amount of concern in the area, especially amongst the aboriginal people,” he said.

“I want to hear about that and I think that is the basis of starting an organisation here.”

Mr Hutton said he has seen what gas fields looked like and described them as “hell on Earth”.

A group of student volunteers held a cake stall with an array of delicious pink cupcakes to raise money for the Indie Rose Foundation.

The cake stall was the school’s first fundraiser for the foundation with the students baking more than 200 cupcakes, last week.

Year 7 student Nataliah Lopez, 12, came up with the idea after her mum had a wear pink day at work.

After the success of the cake stall, Nataliah said the students might hold another fundraiser later in the year.

Indie Rose Foundation founder Kylie Cetinich said it was great to see the kids do something for the community.

“It’s refreshing to see kids of this age come up with the idea themselves to help the Indie Rose Foundation,” she said.

“This would be one of the first fundraisers and is pretty special.”

A pink and purple flower has burst into Mareeba Shire Council’s new logo.

The Acacia Purpureopetala, a rare local wattle with the majority of its distribution in the Mareeba Shire, features predominantly in the new logo.

"Our new logo is fresh, clean and exciting, it is distinctly different and will

be clearly recognisable," Mayor Tom Gilmore said. "The rebrand was a well

researched and thought-out process. After considerable discussion and feedback, a

design was agreed upon by Council, and the new concept is fresh and modern, but still quite fun and colourful," he said.

"The launch of our new brand kicks-off a new era for Mareeba Shire Council, we are proud of our new brand and it is just one of many exciting new developments to come.” The Acacia Purpureopetala is listed on the Commonwealth EPBC Act and the QLD Nature Conservation Act.

Coal seam gas mining was a hot topic at the information day with a majority of attendees expressing concern about the effects on the environment and sacred site.

However, a Department of Natural Resources and Mines spokesman said there were no granted permits to explore for coal seam gas in the Mount Mulligan area, including Nguddaboolgan. The DNRM spokesman said the granted EPC held by Trafford Coal only allows them to explore for coal for the purpose of mining it through a mine and does not permit exploration for coal seam gas. To explore for coal seam gas, a company would need to separately apply for, and be granted, an Authority to Prospect exploration permit, the spokesman said.

Chairperson Alwyn Lyall said he was doubtful the extolled benefits of mining would actually eventuate in the community.

“As far as traditional owners are concerned, we are all for economic development and creating jobs for the community, but it can’t be at the sake of our cultural heritage and our sacred sites such as Ngarrabullgan and not at the loss of our water supply or environment,” Mr Lyall said.

“You only have to look at what is going on in America and NSW, we’ve only been drilling for gas in this country for 30 years, yet we are starting to see the consequences of it. They say they have a gas supply out here of 500 years; if that is the case, imagine what the country would look like later on.

“We’re not here to pick a fight with them, they may not even want to do it in the end – if we make enough noise right now, they might think, ‘oh no, we don’t want to take that on’.”

Despite his scepticism of Mantle Mining and their exploration process, Mr Lyall remained

open to future mining operations.

“Go away and come back in 50 years, you might have a better process of extraction that isn’t harmful to the environment,” Mr Lyall said.

Kuku Djungan Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Hank Wason did not attend the information day and said he was happy with Mantle Mining’s dealings with the Djungan people.

“I have no concerns. We are on good terms and have a good working relationship with Mantle Mining,” he said. “The whole idea of making an agreement with them is about training and employment.” Mr Wason said concerns about the desecration of sacred sites had been “blown out of proportion”.

“Mt Mulligan has got a protected buffer zone around it and is national heritage listed,” he said.

Mantle Mining managing director Ian Kraemer did not attend the information day, nor has the company engaged with the community.

Mr Kraemer said it was still “early days” as the exploration process had not yet begun and

Mantle Mining was still “running through the process with the Department of Natural Resources and Mines and with native title holders”.

“We will then consult with the community— this has to follow a logical order,” he said.

State member for Cook David Kempton emphasised that Mantle Mining has an exploration licence with the consent of traditional owners of the land.

“If they find that there is a coal deposit there that is able to be utilised they have to come back and get a mining permit and that would involve a whole new round of consultation,” he said.

“It’s a question of whether it is there in quantities to go ahead and mine and that would require a fresh lot of consent.”

Mr Kempton said he was not entirely sure “what the science is around coal seam gas” but there was “no question of this running rough shod over the environment.”

He also gave his assurance that no sacred sites would be desecrated.

Lions festival ‘best yet’ Sixteen year old Kirsty Snell was named Dimbulah Lions Festival Queen for 2014 and accepted the accolade to rapturous applause from the hundreds of onlookers, on Saturday, May 31.

The royal party was completed when Keele Jackson was crowned princess, Teagan Abdy Miss Personality, Braylee Campbell Charity Queen, while Aaron Miller was announced as the festival charity king.

The downtown parade caught everyone’s attention with numerous floats put together by local community schools, businesses and organisations.

The crowds were delighted to be treated to a vast array of international and local foods and took time out to catch up with old friends. Local school children were involved with most of the entertainment on centre stage with St Anthony’s, Dimbulah State and Mutchilba State schools competing in the battle of the schools music contest.

Chillagoe country singer Becci Nethery as well as Debbie Ball (ZUMBA) had the festival goers entertained

before the fireworks.

The crowd watched in awe as Mr Fireworks sent up a dazzling display of the latest fireworks from across the globe.

Dimbulah Lions Club President Jamie De Lai was left speechless as the day’s festivities went ahead without any glitches.

“It’s been a fabulous night I’m sure everyone enjoyed themselves and had plenty to eat and were happy with all the entertainment we had for them,” he said.

“I must say it’s probably been the best festival yet, I know we say that each year but the festival keeps growing each year as well.

“It has definitely been our best fundraising year, I can’t praise the lions club members and all the people that helped out in the organisation of the festival enough; it’s been a terrific effort from all involved.”

Club treasurer Brandon Goldsworthy and Secretary Eddie Toffenello both gave the festival the thumbs up.

I’m probably as guilty as many other farmers of dismissing CFMoto before really giving it a chance. However, this month I decided to put all preconceived ideas aside and give it a try — and I’m pleased now that I did.

The CFMoto Z8 has been designed as a nimble, yet powerful, two-seater side by side or SSV for off-road, all-terrain use. Now, while it isn’t really a dedicated farm machine, it may just strike a chord with some out there as it will make

everyday jobs on the farm a whole lot more fun, and when the weekend comes around — look out. For those after a tamer, more practical machine, the company does make a range of models, including its U8 that is probably going to be more suited for everyday farm use.

Having this particular machine out on my own farm meant I knew exactly where to take it to put it through its paces, with plenty of hills, rocky tracks, and open ground to test it out.

Design and build

At first glance the Z8 is quite striking, with its shape aggressively styled and red and white plastic panels that shroud the exterior. It also has slanted LED lights at the front and rear, along with a wraparound chrome nudge bar and 14-inch alloys, which all add to this impression.

A small tray on the back is largely more for show than to carry anything, with a load rating of only 100kg. The Z8 also features a tow hitch and winch.

The racing-style seats and the four-point harness are great for safety, although not overly practical on the farm when you have to get in and out often to open gates (accessory three-point seatbelts are available). One thing I’m pleased to report that I didn’t test first-hand is the roll cage, as I managed to keep all four of the six-ply tyres on the ground. It is quite reassuring the lengths CFMoto has gone to to ensure safety, having built a roll cage to high standard that obtained an Independent ISO certification rating for safety.

Expecting mothers in Cooktown will have the choice to deliver their babies locally for the first time in more than a decade.

The Cooktown Cluster Midwifery Group Practice and birthing service will operate from early next year and is estimated to accommodate 40-60 women annually.

After birthing services were closed in 2003, expecting mothers were forced to travel to Cairns or elsewhere at 36 weeks to give birth.

The Queensland Government has provided $3.8 million in recurrent funding for the service.

Royal Flying Doctor Service Regional Manager Angela Jarkiewicz said the reintroduction of the birthing services was a great initiative and RFDS looked forward to working with the Cape York Hospital and Health Service.

“In today’s environment, any expansion of services is a positive movement,” she said.

“We are always cautious and need it to be safe for people, which is why it takes a long time to develop.

"We will now get involved around policies and procedures supporting them and in developing when

Cape York Hospital and Health Service Board Chair Bob McCarthy said the Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service had already appointed a Clinical Midwifery Consultant and a Maternal and Child Health/Indigenous Health Worker and were continufarmtrader.co.nz | 67 ing to recruit for an additional four midwives, one health worker, three nurses, two doctors and an administrative assistant.

“The birthing service means that women in Cooktown, Wujal Wujal, Hopevale, Lakeland and Laura will now have the opportunity to access a known midwife throughout their pregnancy and for up to six weeks after the birth, right here in Cooktown,” Mr McCarthy said.

Mr McCarthy said the next step for the health service now was to look at improving maternity and birthing services for Cape York as a whole.

“A comprehensive maternity services plan for the whole of Cape York currently is being developed and should be completed by the end of 2014,’’ he said.

“Among a range of matters, this plan also will look at the feasibility of re-introducing low-risk birthing services to Weipa, which were removed around 1994.”

New system treats jaundice

By Katherine Kokkonen Precious newborns have a shining light in new technology available at Mareeba Hospital.

Jaundiced infants can now be treated with the BiliSoft Phototherapy System, which delivers a blue light to babies through a special phototherapy blanket.

The system allows mothers to easily hold their babies while they are swaddled in the phototherapy blanket.

Midwife Samantha Costa said it was important for the babies to continue to have physical contact with their mothers.

“That bonding is important,” she said. “When they are in the cot you can’t really hold the baby, whereas with this you can cuddle the baby and you are not interrupting that time under the light.”

Midwifery Unit Manager Sandra Eales said not a lot of babies are treated for jaundice at Mareeba Hospital.

“Probably between five and 10 times a year and they would normally be under the light for several days,” she said. “The risk with jaundice is that if it is severe, it can actually cause brain damage if untreated.

“It (the system) is for mothers and babies and it’s more effective because the treatment is uninterrupted because you don’t have to stop the therapy to feed the baby.”

Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation purchased the system, worth $9,000, following a donation from Leslie and Anne Mills, on behalf of the Mills Family Foundation.

“This is something that they needed,” Mrs Mills said.

“It’s a lovely little hospital and it helps a lot of people in this area.”

What is jaundice?

• Newborn babies are often affected by jaundice, which makes their skin and eyes have a yellowish tinge.

• Other symptoms may include drowsiness, feeding difficulties and dark urine.

• Jaundice is caused by a build-up of a chemical called bilirubin in the baby’s blood and tissues. Bilirubin is

normally processed by the liver, but a newborn’s liver takes a few days to process it.

Around $6million is being invested into Cooktown’s waterfront, including $3.5million in marine infrastructure, $640,000 on the Charlotte Street Wharf upgrade, $1.5million to dredge the harbour and $400,000 on the floating boat ramp. Cooktown Mayor Peter Scott said the reclamation of the waterfront had been the number one community project and will invigorate the town.

“Everybody loves the Townsville strand and the Cairn’s esplanade. We will have a tidal saltwater pool, kids’ playground, showers and toilet, performance area and fishing platforms,” he said.

Cr Scott said the projects were on target and after the renovations council will

take over the maintenance of the wharf.

“We’ll have everything we wanted in 18 months,” he said.

President of the Cooktown Chamber of Commerce Justin Coventry said the upgrade was an “awesome project”.

“The local wharf is a quite popular fishing spot and it will be expanded and provide so much more for locals and tourists,” he said. “It’s going to improve the lifestyle here and there is the potential for businesses because this can attract cruise ships, which generates more money into the town.”

Member for Cook David Kempton said works had also been fast tracked to repair some damage done to the floating walkway following Cyclone Ita. “Cooktown is a draw card for visitors and boaties and we are getting on with the job of repairing the damage,” he said.

TGT joins Home Timber and Hardware

By Carl Portella Local company TGT, whose close links to the vibrant past of the Mareeba and Dimbulah tobacco industry, has become part of the Home Timber and Hardware Group.

More than $1 million was splashed into the newly renovated store which was officially opened on Saturday May 31.

At their recent grand opening customers saw first-hand the magnitude of the refurbishment the store has received over the last few months and took advantage of the many opening specials throughout the day.

Sheldon Mulla CEO of TGT Home Timber and Hardware said: “We are still one of very few Co-Ops left in the country controlled by the board for its shareholders, but joining the Home Timber and Hardware group now gives us the security of being with a large group while at the same time retaining the local identity.”

He went on to say: “The last few months has seen work in progress while

we had an interior refit, exterior makeover and almost doubled the floor space means we now have more products and a greater range of products catering for the home handyman and the professional builder.”

“The Home Timber and Hardware branding is going to carry the company forward,” he said.

“We also have a rewards program which we will roll out shortly as well.”

While the Mareeba store is now complete the next step is to refurbish the Dimbulah outlet with work set to begin within the next month.

State manager of the Home Timber and Hardware group Jason Rayner said: “It was a huge challenge pulling walls down, putting ceilings up but very excited on the outcome.

“We’ve opened 10 new stores around the country in the last 12 months. We are also the fastest growing independent hardware brand in Australia,” he said.

The third story is of “Jimmy Boy”, a 10 year old bay draught horse, owned by the Mareeba Rodeo Association and on loan to Foxwood Mill.

“Jimmy Boy” worked 5 days a week, 8.00am5.00pm, hauling trolleys of timber to the saw benches, but wouldn’t start work until the 8.00am whistle and knocked off promptly at 5.00pm.

Bypass proposal I refer to your article ‘Bypass Proposal’ (28/5/14).

While I am all for a bypass, the one suggested by Mr Peters includes coverage from Basalt to nearby Close Avenue. This area consists of Council Pensioner cottages.

There would be traffic noise 24 hours. The noise at night would disturb these Pensioners. Already, I have heard complaints from a resident about the Lindsay Transport parking bay. I would hope that the Major will consider the elderly and frail if and when the decision is made.

Surely, if this land becomes available, then more Council cottages or a new library would be the proper way to use it.

Fake crash shows emergency reality

By Katherine Kokkonen Emergency crews arrived at a horrific scene at Mareeba Soccer grounds, but it was all for show.

Fire fighters, police and ambulance officers worked together at a simulated car accident to show the public the reality of what happens at an emergency.

The demonstration was part of Fatality Free Friday, Australia’s largest community based road safety campaign, where road users were called on to promise themselves, their family and friends to consciously drive safely and obey all road rules.

Organiser Carolyn Sandaver from Mareeba Chamber of Commerce was impressed by the demonstration, which involved two cars, a quad and four casualties in a collision.

“It opens people’s eyes to the complete process of when the emergency services actually arrive on the scene and what the process is to recover the casualties and deal with the vehicles,” she said.

“The main aim of Fatality Free Friday

is to have one day where there is not a fatality, at all, but it is also about road safety awareness and for people to remember that the choices they make will always have a consequence.”

The demonstration was also a training opportunity and as well as the three emergency services, SES volunteers took on roles as casualties and medical students from the JCU Rural Clinical School participated.

Mareeba Ambulance Officer in charge Gavin Rablin said the emergency services regularly train together and the demonstration was a chance for the med students to see what happens at the site of an emergency.

“They had a chance to see what it’s like being there and use some of our equipment and see our strategies, which they don’t normally get to do,” he said.

“It helps them understand what has happened prior to the patient getting to hospital, the difficulties, and they get to see the trouble we have getting people out of cars and a better understanding of the mechanisms.”

After working to cut the casualty free of wreckage, he is finally placed on a stretcher at a simulated car crash for Fatality Free Friday.

Scouting for fun and challenge The Mareeba Scout Group provides challenges and fun for people of all ages.

Scouts is commonly thought of being just for the boys, but girls can take part in the adventure, too.

Over the past year, the Mareeba Scout Group has grown to 34 members, but more are always welcome.

Nicole Theakston, 10, has been part of scouts for just over a year and loved all the challenges she has experienced since joining.

The toughest challenge has been abseiling because it was a sheer drop, but she said it was good feeling when she got to the bottom.

Gordon Yates, 11, has also been with Scouts for just over a year and enjoyed learning knotwork.

“They’re not fancy, just hard,” he said.

“My favourite knot double fisherman’s which is for abseiling.”

Group leader Glynis Williams has been part of scouts for close to 20 years and said the group provided opportunities for kids to learn by trying activities out for themselves.

“It’s wonderful for kids because it provides opportunities to develop leadership, but also caring and responsibility for the community,” she said.

“There is a lot of service involved and the whole way through there is a message of helping other people.”

Tablelands Relay for Life launches in Mareeba

Orchids on show in Atherton Green thumbs will be in for a blooming good time at the Orchid Conference at the Atherton Showgrounds, this weekend.

Orchid judge Noel Grundon said visitors can expect to see a wide variety of orchids in the show and can buy their own with seedlings through to flowering plants on sale.

In his capacity as judge, Mr Grundon will have his eye out for colour, form and placement of the flower.

“It should be clean and crisp colour, not muddy, not blurred and the markings are well defined and sharply edged,” he said.

“With the form of the flower, we do like to see flowers have segments

as wide and the flesh of the segments should make up the most of what you look at.

“The orchids should also look you in the face; you should not be lying on the floor to have a look at the orchid.”

Mr Grundon has been fascinated by the wide variety of orchids for decades and said there was a type of orchid for every environment.

“Orchids are so variable—it doesn’t matter which environment from Hobart to Darwin, there is always something that will grow naturally,” he said.

“You have to be very skilled to kill an orchid, but also extraordinarily skilled to grow them very well.”

Teams are encouraged to put on their sport shoes and raise money for the Cancer Council.

Relay for Life Tablelands was launched last Friday with 18 teams already registered for the event.

The relay will be held on September 13 and 14 at Davies Park in Mareeba.

Tablelands Relay for Life Deputy Chair Gavin Johnson said approximately 400 far north Queenslanders battle cancer every year.

The relay is a chance for people to

come together to remember those who have lost the battle, celebrate the survivors and fight back against cancer.

“Encourage more people to get involved,” Mr Johnson said.

“It’s a fun event and an opportunity for teams to do some fundraising for Cancer Council Queensland.”

Review by Louise Keller: There's a whole lot of shaking going on - and I'm not referring only to the penis and dildo gags - but to the insanity of ideas in what is essentially an outrageous, party that broadly explores the divide between youth-inspired excess and turning the corner into adulthood. Forget the plot - the title says it all - the film relies on an ever-escalating thrust of juvenile energy in which basic urges, human foibles and living for the moment forms an umbrella under which the fear of getting old and forgetting how to have fun is raised.

'This is like The Brady Bunch,' says Kelly tentatively as they walk out of their new suburban home; 'We can have fun AND have a baby,' says Mac. The opening scene in which Mac and Kelly are trying to have adventurous sex on the dining room chair but are distracted by the ever-grinning baby, begins the story. Mouthguards, sleep masks and abstinence are the new everyday reality.

Catalyst for the propellant of the film's lunacy curve is the arrival next door of Teddy (Efron) and his frat boys, whose circle of trust relies on brotherhood before all else. It begins with a low-key 'keep it down' from the young marrieds (referring to the noise from the all-night parties and cavorting), the bonding between Teddy and Mac ('crossing swords' as they urinate side by side in the fountain) and the ultimate total deterioration of their relationship when all hell breaks loose after trust is demolished and boxing gloves donned.

There are Batman impressions, a sword fight with dildos and an outrageous scene in which Kelly's milk-heavy breasts get an unforgettable breast-pump treatment. None of it is in good taste and many will be offended, while others will shriek with raucous guffaws. Lisa Kudrow is good fun as the University Dean whose three-strikes-out policy relies on headlines and the humour comprises quick one-liners, impressionist fun, nonsensical ideas and a crazy scene involving a frat member called Garfield (Jerrod Carmichael) and a police officer (Hannibal Buress). Rose Byrne is a lovely presence as the new mother who tries to keep it together but quickly loses it and doesn't shy away from letting bad language fly.

The scent of spring was in the air last Friday when we officially launched the Tablelands Relay For Life at Davies Park – spring carnival style!

This was a great night as locals gathered to find out what Relay For Life was all about and meet our new inspirational Face of Relay, Val Shannon.

We are so thrilled to have Mr Shannon on board as Face of the Cancer Council Queensland event, and feel honoured that he will lead the survivors and carers lap to officially open the event in September.

As a prostate cancer survivor, Mr Shannon has eagerly joined Relay to encourage all Queenslanders to detect cancers early by participating in national cancer screening programs and become aware of changes in their body.

While there is no single, simple test to detect prostate cancer, it is vital that all Queenslanders don’t put off seeing their GP if they think something isn’t quite right or talk about available detection methods.

For some cancers, early detection could save your life.

We know that up to one third of cancers are also preventable through simple lifestyle adjustments including eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, quitting smoking and staying SunSmart.

Being a voice for early detection and cancer prevention is something that Mr Shannon has grown extremely passionate about, and we are honoured to have him walk with the community at Relay For Life.

Cancer affects so many people, but Relay gives families and friends the chance to make a positive difference in the fight against cancer, and pledge to lead a healthier lifestyle to reduce their personal risks.

Join Mr Shannon and help grow hope for all Queenslanders affected by cancer.

EXPRESS sPORT RESULTS TABLELANDS HOCKEY - Roundup 31 May The U6’S and 8’s continue to develop their skills and expertise under the watchful eye of Helen Harris and their parents.

With an abundant amount of energy they play a modified game of hockey over 40 minutes which focuses on skills such as trapping, passing and dribbling. Many of these little ones are now eager to play up in the U10’s as their confidence increases. No matter what the weather these eager players constantly thrill the crowd with their guts and determination.

The U10 round robin continues to be a great competition for all the teams. With fast turnarounds and pressure on the field all teams are excelling in their skills. Atherton Raiders played off against the Sharks with neither team able to outplay the opposition. Lily Stein, Clayton Meannie, Andrew Earl and Daniel Genge all showed improved skill on the field holding the Raiders out of the box. With a final score of nil all, the leader board is becoming hotly contested. An understrength All Stars took on the Sharks and once again there was nothing between the teams. Jack Fealy and Jordann Relf supported Robbie Masasso to score the only game of the match.

In a fast turnaround All Stars then played the Raiders again with both teams playing a great game. Robbie Masasso again scored the only goal for the All Stars holding out a determined Atherton Raiders 1/nil.

The U13 teams enthralled the crowd this week with some fantastic action on the field. Troopers supported by Connor Clair, Bailey Hutcheson and Keelan Boyd overcome the determination of the Scorchers 3/1. Catriona Boyd scored the only goal for the Scorchers in a very plucky and courageous attack on the box. Both teams definitely displayed some great skill and determination not only in the goal box but on the field as a whole. Vikings took on the All Stars which was closely and tightly contested. The teams scored goal for goal for most of the games with J Mc Gowan, Kai Rhode and Ben Lowe putting a goal apiece in the box for the Vikings. Abby Toshach was the player of the match for the All Stars dominant both in the box and on the field scoring the 2 goals for the team; final score 3/1.

The U17 games were played in mixed weather. The U13 Rep team showed some great skill and dominance in the goal box heading off a determined Malanda Jaguars. Kyrstal Coleman, Alex Wright and Anita Curcio helped support Megan Wright score the sole goal for the girls. The Boys however were too strong with Adam Keevers, C Lucey and M Toward all scoring for the boys. With a final score of 3/1 the Jaguars can hold their heads high in what was a great game.

In a surprise turnaround the usually dominate All stars went down to the Bombers. Held scoreless the All Stars fought hard till the end and showed great spirit. Special mention to Laura Trezise in the goal box for her valiant effort and determination. The Bombers with the help of Will Coleman, Dan Knowles scored a hat trick of goals between them. Voodoos maintained their right to be at the top of the ladder width a dominated display over the Totally Tilted girls. Rachel Parisie, Alice Phillips and A McDonald dominated the box in a wonderful display of skills. True sportsmanship however overrode the final score with both teams coming off the field acknowledging the determination of all players.

In the senior fixtures we again saw some great action from both the ladies and men’s teams. Woteva took on Plastered Vets. The normally dominant Plastered Vets went down to Woteva in an extremely tight game. Carrie DeBruys scored the only goals for the Plastered Vets whilst Louisa Godfrey put two in the box for Woteva. An extremely close game that went down to the wire with a 2/1 victory to Woteva. Shooters and Cruisers went head to head in the final game of the ladies. Jess Finlen and T Shaw both put a goal in the box for Shooters. Courageous in defence the Cruisers were unable to convert and went down 2/0.

Shamrocks took on the Bombers in a real gutsy fight. With an understrength Shamrocks Chris Keating, John Muller and Jason Crear all scored a goal apiece. The Bombers came

back with two sharp goals but couldn’t manage to even the scores. Right on the hooter Bombers gave away a corner but the Shed Boss Shamrocks were unable to convert due to the great defensive skill of the Bombers goalie. Final score 3/1 Shed Boss Shamrocks. WhiteKnights faced off against the K9’s in a very tense and thrilling game. Going head to head over the entire 60 minutes there was very little between the teams with a final score of 3 apiece. Michael Ciobo put 2 in the box in a dominant display of gamesmanship supported

by Tommy Vidler scoring the third goal for the Whiteknights whilst Bronson Diamond and Jason Lowe scored for the K9’s.

The leader board in all divisions remain tight a as the season progresses and we are expecting some fantastic matches over the coming weeks.

MAREEBA BASKETBALL - SEMI-FINALS The Semi-Final of the Mareeba Winter season competition are being decided this week in all Senior and Junior Divisions with a Grand Final berth awaiting all Semi-Final winners, no doubt keenly contested encounters should eventuate.Commencing with the Senior Mens Semi-Finals programmed for this Tuesday night. Looking at performances during the season, then Eurostars and Stingrays are the likely teams to play the championship decider. However both these teams may well be without key players. So Comets Young Guns and Topshots will have every opportunity to challenge for the championship title by recording victories on Tuesday. Baiada Steggles and Gummaz are favourites to again contest the Senior Ladies Grand Final. Their Semi-Final opponents this Thursday night sees Tequila Slammers and High School Divas making their first Semi-Final appearance. Both these sides require outstanding performances in order to topple their more fancied opponents. Under 16 Junior Semi’s also on Thursday should provide close results and winners hard to forecast. YUNGABURRA BOWLS “We Are The Champions” - The Yungaburra Ladies have triumphed for the second year in a row in the Atherton Tableland Division Ladies Bowls Association 1st Division Pennants this week. It was the closest Pennants’ Competition anyone had seen in a very long time, and so Yungaburra came in on top by only a very minimal margin. It was a very tight competition and some great bowls were played and the friendship of bowls is always very strong on the Atherton Tablelands. Cahill cruises in Khanacross

The first khanacross/rally event for 2014 was held at the new FNQ Rally Sport Park near Mareeba on the weekend of May 24 and 25.

Although the tracks and camping areas were finished at the beginning of the year, water and toilets were only completed on the weekend with some minor improvements still to be made. The staging of the event is the culmination of several years work for the volunteers of FNQ Motorsports Club, community donations and the support of the Mareeba Shire Council.

Twenty drivers from around the Far North competed at the inaugural event, and it is hoped that the new facility will encourage interest in rallying in the area and some new drivers in the future.

The event was hotly contested in all classes including the Junior and Ladies classes. The new track meant a level playing field for all with a couple of drivers locating trees on the side of the track causing minor damage to their cars.

The event was eventually won by Scott Cahill of Cairns in a Mazda 323, after a weekend long tussle with Andrew Horn of Kuranda in his Toyota Camry. Andrew finished second overall with Steve Van der Brug in a Nissan 180 SX in third place. These three all won their respective classes: Scott Cahill winning the under 1600cc Class, Andrew Horn won the 1600 - 2000cc Class and Steve Van der Brug was the winner of the Over 2000cc Class.

The Ladies Class was won by Megan Hendry of Yungaburra in a Toyota Corolla and the only junior finisher was new competitor Mathew Sheerans in a Commodore.

The next event will be on the 28th and 29th of June and will also double as a Round 2 of the North Queensland Khanacross Championship, with drivers expected from Mackay to Mossman and points further west.

FNQ Futsal champs

St Thomas’s Primary School Futsal team are the new primary school champions of Far North Queensland.

On May 22, the school participated in the championships at Redlynch Futsal stadium which hosted primary schools from Townsville north.

After a first round 5-1 loss to Freshwater primary the two teams met again in the final with St Thomas’s turning the table with an emphatic 5-1 win. In the process the students overcame Redlynch, Holy Cross and St Francis primary schools before defeating Mareeba State School 7-2 in the semi-final for passage into the final.

As champions of far North Queensland the boys will now travel to the Gold Coast in November to play in the Champion of Champions tournament for state team selection.

Elite junior cricketers from across the region had the opportunity to rub shoulders with Australian cricket legends in Cairns recently.

The Bulls Masters conducted (by invitation only) training days to identify young hopefuls as future state and Australian cricketers. Two young boys from Mareeba were selected to attend – Chris Adams and Lachlan Ford.

Mareeba youth get a sporting chance

Three promising young Mareeba athletes have been giving a sporting chance to do their home town proud following their recent selections into representative competitions.

Member for Cook David Kempton presented the Mareeba State High School trio with individual donations to help cover travel and accommodation costs.

“I congratulate these young people for their respective achievements,” he said.

“As a community we really need to encourage our youth to be more active and involved in healthy competitions.”

Mr Kempton presented $100 each to Grace Strickland, 14, and Marina Howard, 16, who are both set to represent Far North Queensland in the Cairns District Junior Rugby League’s under-16s female team.

Thirteen-year-old Chris Adams received money to cover the cost of his return airflight, after landing a spot in the Queensland cricket under-12s side.

Mr Kempton congratulated the trio on their achievements and for “setting the right example” to their peers.

League lover Marina said she wanted to show other girls that “league was not just for the boys”.

“All my brothers play football, so I thought, ‘why can’t I do it too?’,” she said.

“I hope this will encourage more girls to get involved in the sport.”

All three said they were “thrilled” to receive the support.

“While it might not be the biggest amount, I wanted to do what I could to assist these teenagers, and their families, with the costs involved,” Mr Kempton said.

“I encourage other businesses and community members to do the same and encourage our young people to get involved in any healthy activity like sport.

“You never know where it might take them.”

Gladiators claim victory

THE Mareeba Gladiators have shown their dominance to beat Cairns Brothers to the cheers of the home crowd.

The Gladiators overcame a difficult first half, where they were 14-8 down, to fight back and claim victory 32-20.

Gladiators Captain Shana Aue put the win down to hard work during the training sessions.

He said the Gladiators knew they were in for a tough game and were focussed on controlling the ball and completing their sets.

“I give credit to all the boys, they all put in,” Aue said.

Brothers Captain/Coach Chey Bird was disappointed by his team’s

performance and put their loss down to the Gladiators enthusiasm and determination.

According to Bird, Brothers suffered from unforced errors, failing to complete their sets and continual pressure from the Gladiators.

“This place is a graveyard for visiting teams,” he said. “The Mareeba side were going to be tough to beat but we didn’t expect that they would do that good a job of beating us.

“We tried to play too pretty and weren’t prepared to roll our sleeves up. We just didn’t want to get in and do the tough stuff—we didn’t want to play through the middle and we didn’t do what had to be done before trying the fancy plays.”

Midway through the second half, pressure saw the Brothers crack with a physical altercation on the field and the sinbinning of a player from each side.

“The opposition threw punches and we retaliated,” Aur said.

On the back of this win, the Gladiators were looking to remain focussed and not fall victim to complacency with another game against Brothers this week, in Cairns.

“We’ll just keep doing what we are doing,” Aue said.

“There are always improvements, we learn every week and hopefully we will take that to our training session and game—our main goal is just to stay positive.”

Early morning training, hours spent pounding the pavement and feeling extreme pain are all part of the challenge for athletes competing at the Cairns Adventure Festival.

Matt Jacob has been training for the last six months for his first half Ironman this weekend.

Mr Jacob has been taken under the wing of more experienced athletes, with a group of seven local athletes training hard, six days a week.

Although endurance events are individual pursuits there is still a social aspect to the sport.

“I have met heaps of new friends both on the Tablelands, Cairns and interstate while training and racing.

“There is a real sense of Camaraderie during and after each event.”

While the training itself has been brutal, Mr Jacob found the most difficult aspect had been balancing the time commitment with his work as a chiropractor.

“By early morning I’m a triathlete and then I take the helmet off and I go to work,” he said.

“We’ll be on the road by five o’clock in the morning and ride or run for a few hours.

“It’s been tough having to get up that early and having to remind yourself you can’t stay up late. On Saturday nights you can’t go out partying because you have to get up at 5.30 in the morning to go for a four hour ride.”

Mr Jacob’s drive to compete is what gets him out of bed in the morning.

He was a competitive swimmer as a kid and has also competed in the Great

Wheelbarrow Race and Tough Mudder.

“For me to do regular exercise I need to be working towards a race—if I’m not racing, I’m not training,” Mr Jacob said.

“This is such a big race that I realised that if I didn’t train for this I wouldn’t finish or I would get really injured.”

As well as the physical preparation, Mr Jacob has been preparing mentally for the gruelling five-and-a-half hour race.

This preparation has included becoming accustomed to the pain he will experience.

“I can’t be scared of it, I can’t be worried about it,” Mr Jacob said.

One of the toughest trials Mr Jacob has gone through was a practice run of the bike ride section of the course.

“The last 15 km was torture, everything hurt—legs hurt, back hurt, shoulders hurt, neck hurt—and I just kept going because that is what it is going to feel like on race day,” he said.

“As a chiropractor, I understand how the body works to a high level and there have been times when I’ve been training and I’ve realised I’m red lining it and I can’t push any harder and the pain that I’m feeling is starting to become too much, and I’ll take a few days off or slow down.”

Mr Jacob’s long-term goal is to compete in a full Ironman race, but he said that was still years down the track.

For this weekend, he hoped his training would pay off and he has his eyes firmly set on the finish line.

“My goal for this race is to finish,” he said.

Bulls drowned by Dolphins The Stratford Dolphins breathed some life into the FNQ premier league race with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the previously undefeated Mareeba Bulls at Borzi Park, on Saturday night.

From the first whistle it was clear the Dolphins would try and unsettle the Bulls football tempo with a number of physical barrages. The home side weathered the opening onslaught and made the first real opening of the match with Dolphins veteran keeper making a fine save off Shaun Owens at his near post, only to bring down Bull striker Robert Pendenza in the rebound. To the amazement of the Bulls players and crowd, the ref waved play on as Pendenza laid on the floor, with the linesman only meters away not prepared to make the call.

In a evenly balanced opening 45 minutes, the Bulls thought they had found the break with some neat exchanges between striking threesome Larry Maggio, Anthony Mete and Shaun Owens, put Maggio through on goal with only Serafin to beat, but once again the Dolphins custodian stood up to the task, with the sides going into the break 0-0.

In the second period, the Dolphins again tried to outmuscle the home side, and took the lead with a rebounded shot

falling to Ryan Barfoot who tapped in at back post and was awarded the opener, despite being in a obvious offside position. The away side then took the second goal shortly after when a rebounded shot fell kindly to Joe Rusch who made no mistake from only metres out.

The Bulls continued trend of not being able to finish off their chances came back to haunt them with Bulls strikers Anthony Mete and Shaun Owens both guilty of squandering easy chances. The Bulls did get one back with minutes to play through Pendenza, and on the final whistle the ball fell to Wayne Srhoj off a corner but his shot from only meters out went straight to Serafin in the Dolphins goal.

Bulls coach Alex Srhoj was disappointed with the result, claiming a mix of bad calls and bad finishing cost the home side. “We could not score to save ourselves tonight, and we should have got a clear penalty, and then their first goal was clearly of side, nothing went right for us tonight” Srhoj said.

“All credit to the Dolphins, they came out and played to their strengths, and they were allowed to, but they took their chances and we didn’t, and that’s the game”.

Young Holly makes Queensland Hockey side Thrills and spills at speedway Holly Toshach from the Atherton Hockey Association has been selected to play in the Queensland under 19 hockey squad. The 16 year old, has recently returned from the State under 19 Women’s Hockey trails in Buderim, with two other Tableland players, Karli Reison and Jody Barletta.

The Atherton Hockey club continues to be a force in women’s hockey and is highly regarded in producing quality players that often make representative sides. Holly has played all of her junior

Hockey in Atherton but in more recent times she has played in cairns with the Stinger Classie A-Grade division one women’s team in the Cairns Competition.

“I’ve been playing hockey since I could hold a stick” she said. “I was quite shocked when they called out my name for the Queensland side.

“We’re off to New Zealand in September for a series of games which will go towards the National selection”.

Spectators were treated to fierce competition and ideal conditions at the Mareeba Kerribee Classic.

More than 30 competitors took part in the classic, last Sunday in cool and overcast conditions.

In the A-grade, Russell Equinox led for the majority of the race before spinning out and being overtaken by Angelo Tudini who was first past the flag.

President Darren McCulkin came third in the B grade and said the day went well with a fair amount of competitive racing.

“There was a couple of crash and

bashes but that’s all part of it—as long as we all go home friends that’s the main thing,” he said.

“Racing is just adrenaline, it gives you a buzz and it feels good.

“Even if you don’t win, you can still have a terrific race and good fun and you come out with a big smile on your face.”
