Winning day at the races
PUNTERS, racehorses and fashion fillies were rewarded at a spectacular day at the Mareeba Annuals. Mareeba Turf Club Secretary John Thurlow said the action-packed day went smoothly with beautiful sunshine and a nice light breeze providing the perfect setting. The day wasn’t just for track action with Madeleine Kelso picking up Best Dressed Lady in the 2014 Mareeba Annuals Bendigo Bank Fashions on the Field. She is pictured here with Runner-up Nadine Apps, Over 40s best dressed lady Margie Russel and Runner-up Theresa Whiteing. For more Mareeba Annuals action, turn to page 27.

Atherton State High School students Jessica Honan, Robert O’Sullivan and Billy Fogg will head to Canberra for the next phase of their diplomacy journey.
Winning diplomats
By Katherine Kokkonen TAKING the diplomatic approach has paid off for a team of four Atherton State High School students at the Young Diplomats competition. Year 10 students Jessica Honan, Robert O’Sullivan, Josh Andrews and Billy Fogg beat out 11 other teams to be awarded Diplomatic Mission of the year with the added honour of Jessica Honan being named joint winner of Individual Diplomat of the Year. The team prepared for two months ahead of the competition, devoting time weekly to study policies. They played the role of the United States of America, and with the help of Coach Belinda Hampton, they looked in-depth at the issue of food security. “I didn’t realise that food security was a problem,” Jessica, 15, said. “It was a lot of fun, but the whole thing had an overtone of seriousness to it because the issues that we were discussing affected the world,” Robert, 15, added. “It was pretty intense, but the whole way through the team supported each other and so did Ms Hampton.” The whole experience has changed the students’ perspective not only on politics but about everyday life. Jess said she thought it was important that

young people have the opportunity to think about issues such as food security and to learn about how people are suffering from poverty and hunger. “While you’re in the competition, you think about it a lot and you relate it to your life,” Robert said. “While you’re sitting there eating, you’ll just think about it or you’ll be doing something and you’ll just think and relate back to it and it really puts pressure on you to think about what has happened to people and what is going to happen.” Jessica was modest about winning the Individual Diplomat of the Year award and was surprised she received the award. “This is pretty awesome, I can’t wait to go to Canberra,” she said. The team will travel to Canberra at the end of next month and will be shown around parliament house by Federal Member for Herbert Ewen Jones. They will also visit the US and UK embassies. While the students have been immersed in diplomacy for the past few months, they are still unsure if they will take to the political arena after they finish school. “I don’t have an opinion on that, yet, but I will once we go down to Canberra,” Billy, 14, said. “After this, I’ve taken a more positive view on politics,” Robert said. “Now I view the profession in a different light and have more appreciation for what they do.”
Young singer wows at Gympie Muster By Katherine Kokkonen A young Chillagoe singer has stepped up onto the national stage with an impressive performance at the Gympie Music Muster. Becci Nethery felt a bit nervous performing on stage to a crowd that had more people than her hometown, but her nerves didn’t affect her performance. She said she felt amazed when she looked out at the 300-strong audience and saw people singing along with her. Becci played four songs, including her original song I wrote this song for you, at the Muster last month. “It was a bit scary because you never know what people are going to think about it,” she said. “After people were com-
ing up to me and saying how they enjoyed my performance and a lot of lovely things. It’s lovely and feels incredible.” While Becci was still buzzing from her first ever experience at the Gympie Music Muster, back at home the Year 12 student had to keep a level head and complete the QCS exam. Becci first picked up a guitar when she was only 8-years-old and has plans for a future in music. She will release an independent EP at the end of the year and plans to study musical performance at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts, in Sydney, next year. “I’d love to make music my career as my performer, but if that doesn’t happen I’d like to be a music teacher” she said.

Kuranda welcomes new centre By Katherine Kokkonen
THE new Kuranda Visitor Information Centre ticks all the boxes and features more space, light and is in a prime location. The Centre, which came in under budget and ahead of schedule, was officially opened with much fanfare and cheers, last Friday. Centre Manager Cathy Harvey loved the new centre, but still had time to joke with the volunteers that they would have to walk further now they have so much space. She said while the old centre was considered homely, it was also cramped and dark. “The volunteers made it welcoming but for us working behind the scenes there was nowhere to sit and relax,” Ms Harvey said. “Now we’ve got more space and have a better service for the tourists and are more able to promote Mareeba and the Table-
lands.” The official ceremony featured a performance by the Djabugay dancers and a welcome from Djabugay Tribal Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Gerald Hobbler. “It means a lot to me because we have our display in there, too,” Mr Hobbler said. “When tourists come here they come to see the indigenous people and the artifacts. We’re still here because of our culture and because we are strong cultural people.” The $600,000 project was funded from the Kuranda Infrastructure Levy ($400,000) along with a $200,000 contribution from Council. Councillor Jenny Jensen, Centre Manager Cathy Harvey, Mayor Tom Gilmore and Tourism Kuranda Chairperson Melanie Wicks cut the ribbon for the new Visitor Information Centre.

Council breaks promise FROM P1
At the meeting Mayor Lee Long and Councillors Geoff Stocker, Rod Marti and Peter Hodge voted to adopt the officer’s recommendation that council “defer the proposed contribution towards sealing of the requested section until such time that funding is identified within the capital budget”. Mayor Lee Long acknowledged the Cescottos have been appealing to council for decades in regards to the dust issue. TRC has allocated $30,000 to undertake design works on Marnane Road but no funds have been provided in 2014/15 to undertake construction works. The funding of works needed on Marnane Road had come up earlier at the TRC meeting in relation to Round Four of the Royalties for Regions Program. Cr Stocker moved an amendment to add works to the officer’s recommended list of Tinaroo Sewerage Treatment Plant Upgrade, Tinaburra Peninsula and a Local Disaster Coordination Centre. Debate broke out at council when it was suggested Jue Sue Road be added to the list, despite Marnane Road scoring higher when using council’s prioritisation tool. Marnane Road rates at number 10 using the tool, while Jue Sue
Road rates at 36. “I accept that roads should be a priority, but I absolutely cannot accept that Jue Sue Road takes priority on the list put forward by Cr Stocker over Marnane on a community basis, on a welfare basis, on an economic basis,” Cr Pagani said. Cr Marti spoke in support of adding Marnane Road, especially considering its priority rating. Cr Stocker said he was happy to add Marnane Road to the end of the list, but not as a substitute for any of the current works. The additional items, in order of priority, were the construction of a trucking pad at Tumoulin and the upgrade of Brooks Road, Jue Sue Road, Peakes Gully, Beantree Road and Marnane Road. The list was put to a council vote and was passed with the votes of Mayor Lee Long and Crs Stocker and Hodge. While the TRC will have to wait and see if they are successful in their application for infrastructure funding, the Cescottos continue to live under a cloud of dust and disappointment. “They have made a fool of me,” Mr Cescotto said. “I feel let down.” The Express contacted Mayor Lee Long for a comment, but she failed to respond by deadline.

Learning is child’s play at Under 8s Day By Katherine Kokkonen The smallest members of society were in for big fun at St Thomas of Villanova’s Under 8s Day. Children from babies through to eight-year-olds flooded into school to join in activities, which included having their faces painted, cuddling animals at the petting zoo and making bracelets out of fruit loops and nutri-grain. Deputy Principal Leonie McCormack said people often have a misconception about playtime and its importance. She said there were many different sorts of play and they have important roles in education “Structured play is vital because kids learn best through meaningful real life scenarios,” Ms McCormack said.
“Play is about doing real life meaningful things through which children will remember concepts and ideas.” While play has a meaningful side, the children at the Under 8s day were too busy having fun to notice. Ms McCormack said the atmosphere was electric and gave people a chance to take time out and celebrate. “We can all get caught in the busyness of our day and here we get a chance to stop and have a celebration about everything that is early childhood and the richness and uniqueness of young children.” As well as St Thomas students, the day was attended by parents, younger siblings and kids from a variety of learning centres. The police, fire fighters, ambulance officers, dental health unit and community health also paid a special visit.
St Thomas students Rose Easton and Ali Kotzur were all smiles when Lynette Mirachi (centre) from the Mareeba Dental Unit paid a visit.

Australia’s Renewable Energy Target (RET) has been successful over the last decade in bringing down the cost of renewable energy such as solar and wind power, as well as employing 21,000 people across the country. Millions of homes and thousands of farms and other businesses have saved on their power bills by installing solar panels or solar hot water. Thousands more farmers have drought-proofed their properties by earning money from hosting wind turbines. But all these benefits are now under threat. The RET is being reviewed by the Federal Government, and recently it was reported that Prime Minister Tony Abbott wants to close down the policy - even though the Coalition said before and after the election that it supported the scheme. All major parties have backed the policy for more than a decade after it was introduced by John Howard in 2001. Plenty of evidence shows that closing down the RET will not save you on your power bills. What it would do is cause the renewable energy industry to grind to a halt and lead to the loss of thousands of jobs in regional areas. We will also need to produce more of our electricity using fossil fuels such as coal seam gas, which will actually increase bills. If we leave the RET alone, we will get a further $15 billion of large-scale renewable energy investment, billions more in household technologies such as solar and thousands of local jobs. It’s hardly any wonder that Australians want to see more renewable energy. A recent Newspoll found that 88 per cent of those surveyed were in favour of governments supporting the development of more renewable energy from the sun, wind and waves. If we close down the RET, the only winners would be the owners of a handful of old coal power plants that should have been retired decades ago. Australia deserves better. Innovation and leadership blooms By Katherine Kokkonen THE diversity of the Tablelands food bowl is being highlighted by the nominees for the Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award. Howe Farming, Tony and Joe Bianco and Taste of the Tablelands are in the running to win the prestigious award. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) President Joe Moro praised all three nominees for leading the pack through innovation and industry leadership. Mr Moro praised Howe Farming for being industry leaders in not only bananas but also in avocados and coffee. They are still perhaps best known for their bananas, which comprise 70 per cent of their business and makes them the biggest banana grower on the Tablelands and second biggest in Australia. “They are a big, strong family business that have been operating for a long period of time and deserve to be nominated for their innovation,” he said. Managing Director Dennis Howe runs the family owned business with his sisters Christine, Bernadette and Geraldine. General Manager Kim Mastin was humble about the company’s achievements and said their philosophy was pretty simple. “We really just try to do things efficiently and we’re always trying to improve day-today,” she said. “There is a good sense of reward from having a good crop and good staff.” Nominees Joe and Tony Bianco also thrive on the sense of satisfaction that comes from having a good crop. Mr Moro praised the pumpkin, sugarcane and watermelon farmers for their innovative use of technology and close marketing relationships. “They are relatively young farmers and they kicked off on their own and built it up in a short

period of time,” Mr Moro said. The brothers grew up farming and have been in business for about 20 years. During that time they went from having five acres for pumpkins to having 50 acres. “Every crop is a challenge,” he said. “You only have six hours sleep at night because that is all you’re thinking about.” Joe Bianco said he had innovated his practices over the years, including implementing plastic mulch and trickle irrigation, and had seen success come from the changes. He said crop diversification had also been essential for their success. The final nominee also knows about delivering what the consumer wants. Tastes of the Tablelands is in its seventh year and more than 5,000 people are expected through the gates, next month. The festival has grown from 40 stallholders to 100 stallholders, with a variety of family friendly activities and entertainment
Tastes of the Tablelands Joint Coordinators Bronwyne Snowdon and Jo Barnes with Stall Co-ordinator Rhonda Micola. on during the day. By establishing the festival Mr Moro said organisers had shown great leadership in finding a way for farmers to promote their work and produce. “It allow farmers to promote value-added products and highlights the diversity of the area by coming together,” he said. Joint Co-ordinator Jo Barnes said Tastes Tablelands always strived to be creative and provide something fresh every year. “Every year we get new and different stuff so that we are not just reproducing the same-same every year,” she said. The award winner will be announced at the MDFVGA Gala Dinner, this Friday.
Overseas students sample life in FNQ By Katherine Kokkonen From across the world, two students have travelled to Atherton to make it their home for a year. Brazilian Ana Carvalho, 15, and Dane Kristina Beese, 17, are one month into their Rotary Exchange and are getting used to the Australian way of life. The teenagers both chose to come to Australia for the adventure and to practice their english. Both are studying at Atherton State High School and have found it a bit of a culture shock. “When you live here and get to know the people at the school and people of the are you get to know more about Australia than if you only travel here,” Kristina said. “It was very hard to get used to the school system and how the relationship be-
tween teachers and students are different. I think my teachers in Denmark are more like good friends—you just call them by their first name or nickname.” Kristina said the teachers Denmark are less strict and more like a coach. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own education. For example, students are allowed to use their phones and go on social media while in class because it is their choice whether or not to study. Ana also found school to be very different from that in Brazil. “In Brazil we have much more pressure to go to university,” she said. They’ve already made the most of their location with trips around the Tablelands. “I’ve never seen so many stars in my life. It is very beautiful here,” Ana said.

Ambulance tracking first in accountability
Queenslanders can now see exactly how many ambulances are available in their region and what their workload is, with a simple click of a computer mouse. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said in an Australian first, the Queensland Ambulance Service was using social media to release real time tracking of the fleet of more than a thousand vehicles. “Government should be open and accountable, and now for the first time anyone can see exactly how many ambulances are available at a given time across the state,” Mr Springborg said. “Families want to know that if they have an emergency, an ambulance will be available and this is now possible. “If there is pressure on the ambulance service, that information will also be freely available. “We promised at the election to restore accountability and we also promised to revitalise frontline services. The tracking tool is now up and running on the QAS website via facebook and twitter, and is directly linked to the Emergency Services Computer Aided Dispatch system. QAS Commissioner Russell Bowles said it should end the fallacy on ambulance availability. “One of the biggest misconceptions is that when there are ambulances dropping patients at a hospital, there are none available to respond to other emergencies,” Mr Bowles said. “Use of the QAS social media stream has more than doubled in the past six months. We can use this tool to dispel some of the myths.” Mr Springborg said the QAS was streets ahead in ambulance services in Australia. “The QAS is embracing technology and social media for the benefit of Queenslanders and better workforce management,” he said. “It shows the Newman Government has a strong plan that is creating a brighter, healthier future for Queensland families.” The link is available at https://ambulance.qld.gov.au/iroam. html. Winning the war against Asian tiger mosquito outbreak Tropical public health experts in Cairns have identified an effective control method that could stop the aggressive Asian tiger mosquito spreading into Australia. The aggressive daytime-biting mosquito, also referred to as Aedes albopictus, is capable of transmitting dengue, chikungunya and a range of other arboviruses. The breakthrough comes after several years of investigation and research by the Tropical Public Health Unit (Cairns). “Aedes albopictus is native to East and Southeast Asia but has gone on a global rampage in the past 30 to 40 years, colonising every continent apart from Antarctica,” Senior Medical Entomologist Dr Odwell Muzari said. “Detected in the Torres Strait for the first time in 2005, it has since become established on the islands, and threatens to spread to other parts of Australia if we don’t continue to develop new, effective control methods.” Dr Muzari said the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service’s ongoing campaign to control the spread and minimise the risk was vital to keeping the species off our shores. “In urban areas we have had significant success with a new control method where insecticide is applied to resting sites of adult mosquitos,” he said. “Naturally this will require ongoing evaluation and monitoring but we are very encouraged by the progress so far.”
Kempton jumps on board pirate ship Member for Cook David Kempton is throwing his support behind luring the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to Far North Queensland. He said his electorate had all the right settings to be the ideal location for Disney to film the next instalment and that the project would also be a major boost to for the economy and tourism. “The Far North Queensland landscape has deserted islands, amazing beaches, picturesque scenery and maybe a galleon or two, everything a filmmaker could wish for,” he said. Mr Kempton said being part of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise would put Far North Queensland on the map, not only in terms of cinema production, but also for moviegoers the world over who would see what the region had to offer. When Mr Kempton was asked to recommend areas for filming he replied that you could pick anywhere in Cape York and
Torres Straits from Port Douglas, the Daintree, to Lockhart through to any of the tropical islands. “Any location in the Cape is going to be suitable and accessible,” he said. “The population would be more than happy to assist with getting the actors and film crew around and providing whatever support is needed. Who knows? We might even have a Johnny Depp or two hidden away up here.”
Children have soft fall Children at Thursday Island Child Care Centre can now play safely following the installation of a soft fall surface in their playground. Member for Cook David Kempton said the work, which also included building a new timber perimeter fence for the centre’s playground, will give parents the comfort of knowing their children will be safe at play. “This maintenance work is vital to ensure our playground equipment continues to be safe to use and provides an engaging place for our children to develop their skills,” Mr Kempton said. Minister for Housing and Public Works Tim Mander said it was important that young children had access to quality school facilities which improves their learning experience. This applies equally in remote areas. “Whether it’s building new facilities or repairing existing facilities, it is important that we do this to a high standard to ensure our youngsters can develop and grow without any health or safety concerns,” Mr Mander said. “These works are part of the LNP Government’s strong plan to deliver better infrastructure, as promised at the election, and will ensure a brighter future for children and their families.”

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift encourages Far North Queensland fellas to get informed about prostate cancer.
Fellas... get informed!
This September, Cancer Council is calling on Far North Queenslanders to be proactive about prostate cancer, urging men at risk to talk to their GP about the pros and cons of testing. About 32,500 men are alive today in Queensland after a diagnosis of prostate cancer, and about 4000 Queensland men will be newly diagnosed this year. In Far North Queensland alone, around 183 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, and about 25 men will die from the disease. While there is no single, simple test to detect prostate cancer, it is important that local men discuss their risk and the options available with a GP. Prostate cancer is most common in men over 50 years of age, and those with a family history have increased risk of developing the disease. Men with symptoms suggestive of prostate cancer should see their doctor – symptoms include difficulty or pain in passing urine, blood in urine, and passing urine more frequently than usual. While the five-year relative survival rate for prostate cancer has increased from 64 per cent in the 1980s to 92 per cent today, men in rural and remote areas continue to experience poorer survival rates
than those in urban centres. Men in rural and remote areas face a higher risk of being diagnosed with advanced stage prostate cancer, and are less likely to survive a prostate cancer diagnosis than men in urban centres. Men who live and work in regional areas around Far North Queensland need to be particularly vigilant about prostate cancer. It’s imperative that they see their GP or call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20 for information about their risks and options. Queenslanders who have questions about prostate cancer can also go to cancerqld.org.au for information on early detection and screening. We know up to one third of cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle changes including eating healthy, quitting smoking, engaging in physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol intake and participating in recommended screening. It doesn’t mean overhauling your whole lifestyle - a few simple changes can make a big difference in reducing your overall cancer risk. This September - don’t be prostrate about prostate! More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at www.cancerqld.org.au or via the Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20.

Cadets take flight By Katherine Kokkonen AUSTRALIAN Air Force Cadets were given a bird’s eye view of the Tablelands as part of their air experience. More than 30 cadets from the Tablelands 106 Squadron and one dozen cadets from the Cairns 104 squadron took to the skies in helicopters. Tablelands 106 Squadron Commanding Officer Stephen Fowler said cadets was about giving kids opportunities and has a strong focus on youth development. While the younger cadets were getting a buzz from their helicopter trips, older cadets were already soaring. Commanding Officer Fowler said five cadets had been
awarded Air Force flying scholarships, which will give them the opportunity to learn about powered flying and glider flying. Third year cadet Jessyk Ernst was awarded a scholarship, which includes $2,500 towards flying training. He said he wasn’t nervous yet, but he will be when he gets to the airfield. “I’m looking forward to gliding because it is something I haven’t really done before,” he said. “You are learning how to fly the aircraft, which has no engine.” If you would like to learn more about cadets, head to 2a Abbot Street, on Fridays, at 7pm.

Council shows its Braveheart By Katherine Kokkonen COUNCILLORS are calling for schools across the region to have educational resources to teach kids about protective behaviours. At Tablelands Regional Council’s meeting, last Thursday, Councillor Marjorie Pagani moved a motion that council support Braveheart’s awareness program and appealed for councillors to buy Braveheart’s educational resources for their schools. The educational resource, called Ditto, uses music, posters and interactive activities and can be used independently as a personal safety teaching resource.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
“It’s a fun way of learning what we used to know as stranger danger, but it really isn’t strangers who are the danger now, it’s people the children know,” Cr Pagani said. Cr Pagani and Cr Shaaron Linwood are purchasing two Ditto kits for schools in their areas. Cr Pagani urged councillors to put their hands in their pockets to fund the kits for schools in their division, and failing that for TRC to fund the kits. Cr Pagani also encouraged TRC to support White Balloon Day, on September 12, and encouraged staff to don white to raise awareness and funds for Australian kids affected by sexual assault.

Breaking up is hard to do No matter how bad your relationship has become, the actual reality of breaking up and ending the relationship can still be very traumatic, especially when children are involved. Too often people choose the option of “better the devil I know” rather than breaking up and facing the unknown. There are too many questions - Will I lose my house? Can I keep my kids? Do I have to pay maintenance? How will I manage on my own? Friends and family will all try to help, but invariably they cannot answer these questions. You need to get the right legal advice and guidance on your rights. Equally important is that you get advice that takes into account the personal aspects of
your situation. No two situations are ever the same so the advice you need will be different depending on your situation. The law relating to matrimonial and other personal relationship disputes is complex and ever changing so you need a family law lawyer who keeps up to date and can give you the advice that’s right for you – Girgenti Lawyers will help. Divorce, child custody and related matters, child support and property settlements. Contact Lisa Stansfield at Girgenti Lawyers on (07) 4092 3555. Family Law appointments are available at our Cairns or Mareeba Office for your convenience. Telephone appointments also available.
The right advice will empower you to make the decision that’s right for you, and your family.

Atherton Children’s Centre goes gold to raise awareness for Childhood Cancer The month of September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. ACC Director Tracy Lean said everyone has a story, everyone knows someone who is battling some form of cancer and the more understanding, awareness and funds for research we can raise about this disease, the better. There are so many worthy causes out there to support, this is one of many the centre supports. The centre has purchased the materials for the fundraising, every one dollar donated will go straight to the cancer council for research into Childhood Cancer. They are selling gold ribbons and fun pens at the centre for a Gold Coin Donation. Feel free to come and donate to such a worthy cause.

The big family attraction of the season starts at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this week – at the same time as the rest of Australia. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES is a superb action family type movie that will provide good viewing from this weekend, right through the school holidays. So see it first on your local big screen. Also screening this week is the popular LUCY, with Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, and HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY, with Helen Mirren, continues on its delightful comedy caper – we can really recommend this lovely 'feel good' film, which has been very popular with movie goers on the Tablelands. If you have missed it, this is definitely your last week of opportunity to see it.
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work
with fearless reporter April O'Neil and her cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder's diabolical plan
LUCY
A woman accidentally caught in a dark deal turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.
THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY
Following the violent attack that burnt down their restaurant, an Indian family moves to rural France and opens an eatery across the road from a Michelin-starred French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren).

CLASSICAL music’s capacity to lift the spirits will be on display when a young pianist takes to the stage next week. Encore Concert Award winner Aloysius Oenaryo will astound the audience when he performs at St Joseph’s Church, in Atherton, on Monday. Mr Oenaryo beat out three other advanced piano students from the prestigious Australian Institute of Music to win the award. Encore Concert Founder Herman Soenario selected Mr Oenaryo as the winner after hearing his impressive performance of Beethoven’s Appassionata at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Mr Soenario said the way Mr Oenaryo played showed that the 19-year-old pianist had not only technical ability, but the sensitivity and the musicality to deliver a great performance.

Classical pianist Aloysius Oenaryo will delight audiences with his sensitive performance, which will include Beethoven’s Appassionata and Chopin’s Ballades.
“Classical music is not only about notes—it is about the feeling and understanding and deliverability,” he said. “Straight away I could sense that he understood the music and understood how to play for the audience. The audience are in for a treat and will hear beautiful music that lifts the spirit.” At his concert Mr Oenaryo will play the same Beethoven sonata that earned him the award, as well as Chopin’s Ballades. “It is the one piece of music that moves him the most and every time he plays it the whole picture of emotions of the composer come to his mind and he gets very emotional playing it,” Mr Soenario said. Mr Oenaryo will perform a concert at St Joseph’s Church, Atherton, at 6.30pm, on Monday, September 15. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for pensioners and $10 for youth. To encourage an interest in classical music, Mr Soenario has 10 free tickets to give away for people under the age of 18. The LAND Sugar cane calls for research projects
The eight Key Focus Areas for strategic investment are: 1. Optimally-adapted varieties, plant breeding and release 2. Soil health and nutrient management 3. Pest, disease and weed management 4. Farming systems and production management 5. Milling efficiency and technology 6. Product diversification and value addition 7. Knowledge and technology transfer and adoption 8. Capability development, attraction and retention
Sugar Research Australia Ltd (SRA) is calling for applications for research projects that will help build the productivity, profitability and sustainability of the Australian sugarcane industry. Applications must address one or more of the eight Key Focus Areas in SRA’s five-year Strategic Plan. SRA Research Funding Panel Chair Professor Alan Johnson encouraged participants from within the sugar industry and researchers and research organisations for the agricultural sectors to but their best ideas forward. “It is important that the research SRA funds deliver a significant return on the project investment to industry, and practical outcomes that can be easily taken up on the farm and at the mill,” he said. Successful applications must clearly outline how their project aligns with the Key Focus Areas and the industry need that it addresses. The outcomes the research will deliver and how adoption will be maximised must also be clearly explained. “This is a new era of investing in industry’s knowledge where every dollar counts,” Professor Johnson said. “We are fully committed to only funding research projects that deliver real value to SRA’s members, levy payers and the broader industry, and contribute to triple bottom line results.”

Hunters warned against cruelty After receiving a number of disturbing reports of cruelty to feral pigs, Biosecurity Queensland reminded people that cruelty to any animal, including feral and pest animals, will not be tolerated and strong penalties apply. Biosecurity Queensland Acting Director of Animal Biosecurity and
Welfare Ian Rodger said all animals have legislated protection from cruel treatment in Queensland. “Those hunting feral animals must abide by the law and treat animals appropriately,” he said. “Anyone caught deliberately mistreating animals will be investigated and could face prosecution through
the courts, hefty fines and possible jail time.” Biosecurity Queensland encouraged people to report suspected animal welfare situations as soon as possible. Delays in reporting an incident can make it difficult to investigate. They can make a complaint to the RSPCA on 1300 852 188.

ATHERTON TABLELAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION GRAND FINALS ATHERTON
YOUR LOCAL SUPPLIER OF ROCKTAPE!!
Hockey heats up for finals
It is a very exciting time at the hockey association right now. We are about to move into the semi-finals and this will determine who plays for the premiership trophies in all grades. I congratulate the teams and members who have played all season and have not made the semis or finals, it has been a great season for these players and no doubt they will be watching and cheering the finals games. Our season has been extremely successful with many members stepping up in voluntary positions and also completing umpiring and coaching accreditation. This has greatly improved the depth of our club and grown some wonderful positive spirit in all levels. We plan to acknowledge and thank these people at our presentations fol-
lowing the finals on September 13, 2014. All club members should make a point of being present for this celebration. Our club will then have a huge party night with food and music to dance to while we farewell the 2014 season. The community is reminded that we will be running a summer sixes competition again this year which is a more social mixed competition run before and after the school Christmas holidays. It was a great success last year and we look for many teams to nominate and play the smaller version of the game. Please contact any members of the committee for details on this competition for more information. Our club thanks all our sponsors and supporters and looks forward to having another great season in 2015.

MAREEBA BULLS 2014 GRAND FINAL CHARGE
COME AND RUN WITH THE BULLS!
“We’re hungry, we’re determined – nothing will stop us” Well, what a year it has been. The club made a promise at the beginning of 2014 to make sure the “Bridesmaids” tag was demolished and replaced with the “Champion” tag instead. Fast-forward nine months and we have gone a long way to making our promise come true, three premierships are already in the bag and a possible three grand finals and three Crad Evans Shields are on the cards, and why not dream big; why limit our ambitions, because after all we are Mareeba. All year we have proven across all three mens grades we are number one, but now the pressure is on to make sure we keep our foot on the pedal, and this weekend is the opportunity to show what we can achieve when we are one club, one voice, one big immovable object that once we start moving, nothing will stop us.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL MAREEBA BULLS TEAMS IN THE GRAND FINALS!

It has been a long six years since we have tasted the sweet smell of success, and though we enjoyed a great ride in former QSL, having the coveted premiership trophy back in its rightful home, is a feeling that is hard to express. The hours of hard work, the hours behind the scenes, the hours toiling on decisions, it has all be worth it for the all the players, all the coaches and all the spectators. It has been one great year so far, and though we stand tall and proud of what we have achieved so far, we are nowhere near satisfied, that is the message from the players, they are hungry, they are determined to not stop until we have no one left to trample. Yours in Football Alex Srhoj - MUFC president

Love and best wishes from your families. XX
Thanks THANK YOU!
It gives me great pleasure as chairman of the Mareeba Multicultural Festival committee to acknowledge the vast amount of co-operative and community support that has created by far the best festival in sixteen years of operation. I especially thank each and every one of our generous sponsors, The State Government (Multicultural Affairs), and the various ethnic groups, people who mounted cultural and food displays, performers and artists and of course the many thousands of the general public from throughout the Far North who contributed to our success. I also wish to pass on a special mention of appreciation for the personal support and committed effort of each and every one of my committed members. These include Mareeba Shire Council, Fred, Frank, Sabrina, Fatima, Stacey, Des, Ram, Sushma, Julie, Uto, Jennefer, Carl, Kay and everyone else who assisted us in our endeavours. I trust that this has proved an excellent base from which we can look foward to a similarly successful festival in 2015. In appreciation, GIULIANO CORDENOS, Chairman, Mareeba Multicultural Festival Committee

sPORT results & draws AthertonTableland Hockey Fantastic weather saw the crowds gather early for the Semi Finals: in the first game of the day the U10 teams of Raiders and Sharks played off against each other for a finals berth. Going head to head both teams missed opportunities in the box. Ollie May (Sharks) and B Rhodes(Raiders) scored brilliant goals for their teams and at the end of play the teams couldn’t be separated. The U13 Teams saw them mix it up for the semis with the top of the ladder All Stars girls taking on Troopers. Clem Lucey, Ian Horton, Keelan Boyd and Harry Phillips were outstanding in the field. The eventual score line of 5/0 to Troopers didn’t reflect the intensity and skill displayed in the game. In the second game of the U13’s Scorchers played a brilliant attacking and defensive game to keep the Vikings to a sole goal by Ben Lowe. The U17 Girls final saw the Malanda Jaguars take an early and unexpected lead in their game against the All Stars. Acaia Irwin scored a superb goal and the Jaguars really showed how far they have come in all aspects of the game. The All Stars with the help of Sam Lake, Katrina Lange and Lilly Curcio rebounded to assert their dominance on the field in the second half. However with a second half goal by Alex Wright for the Jaguars it appeared anyone’s game right to the end. A fantastic game with a final score line of All Stars 4/Jaguars 2. The U17 Bombers then played a brilliant game over the younger and less experienced Rep Team to come out winners 7/0. Dan Knowles, Nathan Parisie, Garret Dunstan, Will Coleman and Nick Cifuentes all put goals in the box for the Bombers. Taking an early lead with a superb goal by Carrie DeBury Shooters were unable to maintain their dominance with Pluckers evening the scores right on half time. With 2 sensational and quick goals in the second half it seemed certain that Shooters had the game wrapped up till Riley Venables put another great goal in the box for the Pluckers. The Vets teams of Totally Holcim and Waterloo also played with great determination. Helen Harris was again superb for Waterloo scoring 2 sensational goals. Lydia Purdy also put two in the box for the team. Totally Holcim’s Olive

Turnivic played a memorable game also putting two in the box. Eventual bragging rights going to Waterloo 4/2. The final game of the day saw the U18 Bombers take on the K9’s for a place in the finals. A very tough and competitive game perhaps also saw the biggest upset of the day with the Bombers winning over the more fancied K9’s. Garret Dunstan, Will Coleman, Brody Parsons, Oliver Phillips all scored for the Bombers in their 5/2 win which saw them secure a place in the finals against the White Knights. Newcomers rise to tough conditions By Katherine Kokkonen HARSH conditions saw newcomers give seasoned drivers a run for their money at the Far North Queensland Motorsports Club 2014 Khanacross Series. With the new competitors coming onto the scene, 19 entrants took part in the competition at Tepon Raceway, Wondecla. President Andrew Horn was one of the seasoned drivers who came unstuck in the conditions. He said he was impressed by the performance of the newcomers, especially Trevor Thompson, who won the Class A competition. “It was very tight, one of our tightest competitive meets so far,” Mr Horn said. “The newer people are getting quicker all the time and giving the others a run for their money.”
Gymnasts raise the bar MAREEBA gymnasts will somersault and cartwheel onto the state platform. Mareeba Gymnastics has had ten gymnasts qualify for the State Championships, to be held in Brisbane, this year. Abbey Taylor, Amy Qazim, Callum McCarthy, Dean McDonald, Domenic Gallo, Frank Tulloch, Joshua Cox, Rhien Ford, Ryan Johnson, and Tahlia Kazim achieved the qualifying score, which sees them go through to the state competition. Six of these young gymnasts have also qualified for the Regional Team Challenge. The challenge takes the top
six gymnasts from across the region and forms them as a team to take on the other Queensland regions. Team Members are (Level 6) Tahlia Kazim, (Level 5) Abbey Taylor, (Level 4) Callum McCarthy, Dean McDonald, (Level 3) Domenic Gallo and Frank Tulloch. The competition will take place later this month at the Chandler Complex in Brisbane. Mareeba Gymnastics also has kids representing in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Level 3 and 4 and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics for Level 4, 5, and 6.
Mr Horn said the placings changed over the weekend due to a number of accidents that occurred. He himself ended up driving into a tree and while he suffered no major injuries, his car was written-off. “The tracks were rough and the conditions were very harsh. There were breakdowns and suspension failures.” The next FNQMSC event is a two-day khanacross on the weekend of September 27 and 28, to be held at Motorsports Park, Springs Road, Mareeba. Four different set-ups will be used and the open track provides good conditions for those looking to have their first run. For bitumen racers, the next MakoTrac event is at Mareeba in on October 1. Further information on the FNQMSC events is on the website www.fnqmotorsports.com.

Off and Racing!
Finals thriller
By Katherine Kokkonen
PERFECT conditions greeted spectators and racers at the Mareeba Annuals on Saturday. A crowd of some 1,200 spectators streamed through the gates to place a bet, catch-up with mates and put their best heeled fashion forward. Mareeba Turf Club Secretary John Thurlow was kept busy during the action-packed day but said everything ran smoothly. “It was fantastic with beautiful sunshine and nice light breeze,” he said. “It all went well. We were put on edge waiting for something to happen,” he joked. The big crowd was thrilled by the closely run races, two of which were won by locally trained horses. Fashions on the field also proved to be close with glorious millenary creations and stunning outfits wowing the judges. Jockeys and trainers were also in the running with the presentation of Far North Queensland Country Racing Regional Awards.

Rewind ten years and the Bulls have just won three men’s grand finals, and went on to win two Crad Evans; fast-forward ten years and they are now in 2014 and all three Mareeba United Football Club men’s sides have secured grand finals berths with three premiership trophies already locked away. The Bulls reserve grade was the last men’s side to achieve their place in the decider, with a hard fought 3-1 win over the Edge Hill Tigers, on Saturday, at Barlow Park. Following the 1-0 triumph by the men’s 2nd division, the Bulls now have all three—premiers, reserves and 2nd division—men’s teams in deciders this weekend. Games are at Endeavor Park this Friday and Saturday night. Players brought fierce competition and fast skills to the court at Mareeba Netball Association’s grand final day. Crowds cheered on their favourite team in the Juniors, High School Division 1 and High School Division 2 games, on Saturday. The littlies weren’t left out with a round robin competition also held for Netta players. The Division 1 High School final was the thriller of the day, with Bullets firing back in the last quarter to claim the game 19–14 over Fever. Bullets captain and shooter Natuna Mackay was pumped after her team’s close, but winning, game. “I loved it, we worked well on the court and talked to each other,” she said. “We knew that we could do it as a team and believed in ourselves and we got it together in the end. We have a great team and I love working with them.” Another winner on the day was Monique Ebner who was awarded Mareeba Netball Association’s Player of the Year. President Connie Martens said Monique demonstrated true sportsmanship and dedication to all netball players. She said Monique is great role model in all aspects of the game and played to a high standard, whether in defence or attack. “She understands the game and that on the court you play hard, always trying your best for the team, always being positive even when the game isn’t going your way and never giving up until the final whistle,” Ms Martens said. Vice President Meredith Ford said the season had seen the competition grow to 180 players. She said players had shown their ability to play at representative level, including the Under 13 team that came third at a state level. “We’ve been seeing improvements in the children that are going away to carnivals,” Ms Ford said. “What they are learning at club is really coming through in the next level and we have three girls, Under 12, selected to train with Vicki Wilson.” Ms Forde looked forward to the next season, which will start in March, and is working towards having new premises for competition.
