New Rotary Field Days chair appointed
IDA Portella (centre) was appointed as the new chair of 2015 Rotary FNQ Field Days on Wednesday, January 14. Her appointment signals a new beginning for the event and the first time that all three head Rotary leadership positions are held by women in a Field Days year. Ida joins Atherton Rotary President Pauline Spackman and Mareeba Rotary President Natasha Srhoj (pictured right) at the helm. Only 30 percent of sites are left ahead of the May event, which is looking to be the biggest and best yet. Turn to page 3 for more on the 2015 Rotary FNQ Field Days.
Airport upgrade By Justin Fris
MAREEBA’s airport is set to receive a much needed facelift, after the Member for Cook David Kempton announced $13 million would be spent on upgrades to the facility. As the project is funded through the ‘Royalties for Regions’ program, the amount in question is secured funding; but will only proceed if Mr Kempton is re-elected to the seat of Cook. Also in attendance at last Friday’s announcement was Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom
Gilmore, who said the project would be great for local employment in the town. “This project will mean more industry jobs and sufficient upgrades will bring the aerodrome up to its potential,” he said. “It will allow us to continue to build a future in aviation, which will lift the skill set for our community, increase employment opportunities and provide a unique opportunity to draw people into our community. “This is an opportunity for our community to grasp opportunities that have been spoken about
for many years and will allow us to grow, what is becoming a considerable and unique aviation based estate.” The big announcements did not end there, with stakeholders and The Express immediately heading to the other side of town. At Mareeba’s sewage treatment plant, Mr Kempton announced a further $1 million in ‘Royalties for Regions’ funding would be allocated toward stage one upgrades of the Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant. These upgrades will include completing 1.1km
of a duplicate rising main, which is designed to prevent overloading of the current facilities. Mr Kempton said the ‘Royalties for Regions’ funding had improved liveability for people within the Cook electorate. “These funding announcements bring the total investment from the program in the Cook electorate to $30 million – which is improving the liveability of remote and rural communities, by investing in community infrastructure,” he said. The Express will keep you up to date with major election issues as they come to hand.

Monster mango Tucked away in a secluded section of the Srhoj family farm at Emerald Creek, stands a small mango tree; which until this week, was virtually unimportant, due to that fact that it only produced a handful of fruit. On the last day of the mango harvest, David Srhoj did a routine inspection of the isolated tree, to see if there was anything worth picking. To his astonishment, the tree had only four mangoes on it; but what stood out from the rest, was one monster mango. To his delight, he thought “gee, this is big” and proceeded to weigh the fruit, to see what it would come in at. The result: 1.5 kg – the biggest mango his young life had ever seen. Rushing back to the packing shed, the workers were in awe of the sheer size; and proceeded to take numerous photos of the prized mango. Makse Srhoj, David’s dad, said: “It’s almost a forgotten part of the farm, because it’s slightly undulating terrain; and it’s difficult to get equipment down there, but we were quite surprised when David found this.” Joe Moro, President of the Mareeba and District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association said: “There is no magic to producing fruit of this size; it’s often a combination of things: like soil type, fertilizer and rain falling at the right time. “Kensington Pride, which is the variety grown on Makse’s farm, can sometimes with the right environmental conditions, get quite big; but 1.5 kg is up amongst the
big ones. “We should put a call out to all mango farmers to see who can produce the biggest KP next season.” The mango will be on display at the Emerald Creek Ice Creamery, until such a time as it becomes right for a fruit salad. Boost for local health By Justin Fris
NEW equipment for the Mareeba Hospital will be able to treat more patients, according to Member for Cook David Kempton. In a joint appearance with Health Minister Lawrence Springborg last Wednesday at the Mareeba Hospital, it was announced that new laparoscopic equipment would be installed for the facility. At a cost of $220,000, the Newman Government’s donation will mean a wider range of services (gynaecological and surgical) will be able to be provided to local residents. After arriving with Mr Kempton around noon, Mr Springborg was given a tour of the hospital; chatting with hospital personnel about their concerns, along with daily life at the hospital. Mr Kempton said the new equipment would mean that many patients would now be able to receive their treatment locally, instead of driving down the range to Cairns. “From the patients’ point of view, access to surgery will improve and in some cases, it will no longer be necessary to make an hour-long journey into Cairns for treatment,” he said. “It is a win-win for people all across the region because by providing a wider range of surgery here in Mareeba, the burden on facilities in Cairns will also reduce.” Mr Kempton said he would continue to work with other hospital personnel across the Cook electorate, in a bid to aid their current resources. “I’m working constantly with the hospital boards, hospital staff and local communities to deliver essential equipment and services; such as Telehealth oncology in Weipa and stet machine for Chillagoe,” he said. Mr Springborg said he believed the news would be ‘positively received’ in the community, along with the potential to enhance opportunities for health in the region. “Planning by the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service has indicated that Mareeba has a large catchment for the provision of gynaecological services; and David’s initiative will enable the community and our health staff to benefit through this investment.”

Ida Portella announced new chair of Field Days FROM PAGE 1 new chair Ida Portella has 10 years experience behind her and will fill the shoes of outgoing Chairperson, Evan McGrath, who has stepped out of the role due to work commitments. Ahead of her upcoming commencement, Ida said the features of the Field Days would be a successful drawcard for people to attend. “The Field Days are on track to be the biggest and best ever, with many of the popular features including the tractor pull and inventors competition making a re-
turn,” she said. “The response from exhibitors has been fantastic, with more than half of the available sites already taken.” Mr McGrath said he was glad to work with his committee during the long standing tenure; and had no qualms about the viable future of the event. “I wish the committee all the best in preparing and delivering the event,” he said. The event, being held on 27 and 28 May at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds, is a joint initiative of the Rotary Clubs of Atherton and Mareeba.

Hinterland Air to service Far North By Justin Fris
HINTERLAND Aviation has come to the Far North’s rescue, operating routes between Cairns and both Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw. Shouldering greater responsibility for the Far North since the collapse of fellow regional carrier Skytrans, the routes will commence once approved by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Hinterland has been servicing the Far North over the last 30 years, with a solid emphasis on basing themselves locally. Along with wholly owning their resources and currently debt free, they also achieved a 94 per cent on-time rating for all passenger services last year. Member for Cook David Kempton was heartened by Hinterland’s decision and said he would continue to push for a greater air presence for remote regions in the Cook electorate.
“I have been in constant discussion with several local airlines, the Department of Transport and the community mayors to ensure there is a viable airline to provide an affordable service that best suits the needs of the communities,” he said. “It has never been a foregone conclusion that Rex Airlines would simply take up where Skytrans left off. “The Cape Mayors have indicated they want to be consulted in the negotiation process and they want all options considered.” The Express also made contact with both Hinterland Aviation looks set to take over important airline ALP Cook candidate Billy Gordon and KAP routes in the Far North. (Supplied Photo) candidate Lee Marriott, for their thoughts on the decision. Mr Gordon said he would be keen to hold regular forums with key stakeholders in is a great opportunity and reassuring point for landing fees cost less. “This price difference would flow into the a bid to provide further understanding of the in- local businesses near the airports,” he said. “In the future however, I think it would be price of the fare and ultimately benefit the surdustry’s significance to the electorate. Mr Marriott said: “I think the announcement beneficial to have the base in Mareeba where rounding community.”
Exploring techniques to allow premium melons to grow By Justin Fris
BENEFITS of protective cropping principles are being explored in a bid to secure the quality of premium melons grown in North Queensland. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) Horticulturist/ Project Leader, Dr Elio Jovicich said greater diversity could be achieved in the market place, if the benefits prove to be applicable. “Protective cropping involves growing plants
under a structure supporting a cover material to create an environment closer to the plants’ optimal growing conditions, to achieve maximum growth and production,” Dr Jovicich said. “The use of these systems protects the plants from outside risks such as extreme, inconsistent weather conditions, as well as pests and diseases.” Dr Jovicich also pointed to success that other warm regions across the world had achieved through protective cropping.
“Rockmelons and honeydews are the two melon fruit types most commonly consumed in Australia, however there is room for more diversity in our market,” Dr Jovicich said. “While it is now possible to find piel de sapo (the spanish name, meaning ‘toad skin’) and small canary melons in supermarkets, other specialty melons are generally absent in Australian markets,” he said. “While several growers in North Queensland have started exploring the potential of growing a

‘Melanoma March’ aims to raise awareness By Justin Fris
TABLELANDS locals are being encouraged to stand together in the fight against the deadly melanoma, which claims the lives of too many people each year. Dubbed the ‘2015 Melanoma March’, people are encouraged to congregate at the Western Event Lawn (in Cairns) from 7am on Sunday, March 22. From there, people will be encouraged to march unitedly in a bid to raise awareness and much needed funds against one of the deadliest diseases in the world. The campaign will commence in Melbourne in late February, with the Melanoma Institute of Australia (MIA) keen to raise $1 million across the nation. Sadly, Australia has the highest reported number of cases of melanoma, with over 12,500 recorded each year. Young Australians are not immune to this trend either, with 20-34 year old patients battling the disease more than any other cancer. ‘Melanoma March’ Cairns organiser Nicole Brown said she was keen for peo-
ple to attend in great numbers and unite for those who couldn’t be there alongside them. “We hope to see as many people from Cairns and surrounding communities to join us for the first ever ‘Melanoma March Cairns,” she said. These sentiments were echoed by MIA General Manager Nicola Ware, who said all funds from the marches would be truly appreciated by those impacted. “As a result of monies raised from the hugely successful 2014 Melanoma March initiative, MIA is currently hosting a number of world-first clinical trials; whereby we’re seeing a number of significant breakthroughs in treatment pathways,” she said. “It’s encouraging to see Melanoma Institute Australia at the forefront of melanoma-related medical breakthroughs and we know it is only made possible with the continued widespread support from the Australian community.” If you would like to register for the 2015 Melanoma March in Cairns or sponsor someone, please visit: melanomamarch. com.au

Kuranda set to receive new mega litre reservoir KURANDA is set to receive a new one mega litre reservoir, after a financial commitment from the Newman Government’s ‘Royalties for Regions’ program. Addressing the local media and community last Thursday, LNP Member for Barron River Michael Trout, (right) said he believed Kuranda residents would now have access to cleaner drinking water. “Over the past three years, the ‘Royalties for Regions’ program has made strong inroads into reversing Labor’s neglect of rural and regional Queenslanders,” he said.
“To meet the growing household and industry demand now, and into the future, I can today announce that the Newman Government has committed $772,500 in ‘Royalties for Regions’ funding to help build a one mega litre reservoir in Kuranda. “Kuranda can experience critical water supply shortages, that threaten to leave the township without adequate drinking water. “This project will address the shortfall, providing water security for residents, tourists and emergency services. “In addition to our funding commitments, the
Mareeba Shire Council will contribute $257,500 for the reservoir project.” Also in attendance, was Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore, who said the project was ‘critical’ for economic prosperity in the region. “Our sewerage treatment plant services Kuranda and a much broader catchment area, as well as hundreds of thousands of visitors that pass through the area each year. “It’s at the stage where it’s not functioning well and is putting the community at risk; so this project is critical for the safety of the community.”

Event organisers believe the people will love the August weather in Port Douglas.
ORGANISERS of the ‘Taste Port Douglas’ event have rearranged the date, in a bid to generate greater international exposure. Held between August 21 and 23, expansion is one of the top priorities this year; with event director Reina Patrick believing there will be something for everyone. “We have kept the very best of Taste Port Douglas and have continued to build on this, to create an exciting three-day event; incorporating celebrity chef dinners at Port Douglas and Palm Cove, master classes, food trails and the
two-day Taste Port Douglas celebration of all things food,” she said. Food will naturally play a pivotal role of the event; however music and celebrity cooking demonstrations will also be topical for those in attendance. Ms Patrick said she believed the pleasant August weather will entice more people to Port Douglas, along with event participation. “We want the world to sit up and take notice of the fine restaurants and exceptional produce this region has to offer year round and August,
which is the busiest time of year for Port Douglas, is the perfect time to do this. “Taste Port Douglas is our opportunity to shine the spotlight on Far North Queensland’s unique food industry and be known as one of Australia’s most exciting produce regions. “Coffee, tea, vanilla, cocoa, tropical fruits, macadamias, cheese, yoghurts as well as some of the best beef in the country, unbelievable tropical fish such as Coral Trout and more – you name it and we have it in Far North Queensland.”

STATE ELECTION – JANUARY 31
Cook Electorate... PUP CANDIDATE:
JASON BOOTH
‘Life goal reached if successful’
PALMER United candidate for Cook Jason Booth said the possibility of winning the seat would be an ‘opportunity to make a positive change, by bringing a new party to our communities’, if successful on January 31. Mr Booth, who grew up in Mossman and began his plumbing career in both Cooktown and Hopevale, said he was a member of the PUP prior to nominating as a candidate. “I was a member of the PUP and liked a few of their policies,” he said. “They then gave me a call and asked if I was interested in nominating for the Cook electorate.” The PUP would have been pleased with their last electoral performance in 2013 (federally), where they polled fairly well across Qld. In Kennedy (which encompasses several Cook electorate towns) they polled 6,419 votes, which was a positive swing of +7.63 per cent
(in the first election under Clive Palmer’s leadership). With several members of the community potentially disillusioned by the two major political parties, both the PUP and KAP could gain tremendously, particularly in regional parts of the state. Away from his plumbing and political commitments, Mr Booth is an avid fisherman. He loves to travel up to the Great Barrier Reef (along with Port Douglas) and enjoy the environment. Mr Booth also owns a 250 acre property, where he runs a mixture of cattle and sheep. The peaceful environment of the land is something he values deeply. On Election Day, Mr Booth said he would try and visit as many towns within the electorate as possible. “I will be doing my best to visit as many communities as I can before Election
Pastor Jeff Xhafer is upbeat about the new services Living Waters will receive.
Day, but due to the sheer size of the electorate it will be a challenge,” he said. Mr Booth will spend election night at home with his family.
‘I will work to see the Mt Emerald wind farm introduced’
GREENS CANDIDATE:
DARRYL DESJARDIN
GREENS candidate for Cook Darryl Desjardin said he would be keen to work towards seeing the Mt Emerald wind farm introduced, if victorious in the Cook electorate race. Mr Desjardin, who grew up in the Far North, has been an activist (predominantly on anti-war, civil liberties and environment issues) his whole life. “Since my return to far north Queensland in the 1990s, I have been involved in bush regeneration projects for government agencies, community groups and on my own property on the Tablelands; as well as being an active member of the Rural Fire Brigade.” The Greens fielded a candidate for Cook during the 2012 state election, but struggled to make a sizeable imprint at the business end of polling. Only 1,295 votes went their way, (5.5 per cent of the overall vote) which was down slightly (1.2 per cent) from the 2009 election.
The Mt Emerald wind farm project has polarised several sectors of the community, which could lead to an increase in Mr Desjardin’s overall vote. In the weeks leading up to the January 31 poll, Mr Desjardin said he was committed toward the following outcomes: See the Mt Emerald wind farm established, (and subject to strict environmental guidelines). Oppose the Nullinga Dam (Walsh River) as a financially wasteful, geographically unsuitable alternative. Oppose coal seam gas exploration and extraction (and its negative impacts on aquifers and community health). Increase training and funding to enable Indigenous Queenslanders to manage their land and sea and reflect local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural values in the management of Wild Rivers areas. Mr Desjardin is also keen for a world heritage listing for Cape York, but through influence from traditional land owners.
Festive spirit continues for businesses By Justin Fris
THE Christmas spirit of giving has continued through to the New Year, with several Far North community services the recipients of funding from the Newman Government. Cynics may see the donations as election sweeteners, but no one can deny all funding will be providing valuable services to members of their respective communities. All donations were provided through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, which has allocated $256,000 toward assisting not-for-profit businesses and services. Another successful recipient, Living Waters Apostolic Ministries, received $31,818 for a brand new food van and kitchen. In an interview with The Express, Pastor Jeff Xhafer said the food van and kitchen facilities would be welcomed by the Living Waters Church community. “The food van will be run solely by volunteers and we are keen to show the community that we are the church that cares.”

The Express is awaiting response from Cook’s final candidate, Michael Angelo Newie, in a bid to provide a profile for every Cook candidate.
Hello, I am Lee Marriott, your KAP candidate for Cook The Electorate of Cook has been treated badly by the ALP and LNP whose main allegiances are to the south east corner of the State. We have been their poor cousins for too long. Alongside Shane Knuth at Atherton and Robbie Katter in Mt Isa and as a part of the independents accord, we can become a powerful force in the next State Parliament to ensure the people of the Far North get a fair deal. The electorate of Cook needs jobs first and foremost and to do this we have to get rid of red tape and costly government application fees for a multitude of licences and other taxes that are stifling small business and the farm sector. Power and water assets must not be sold, because farmers, families and small business can’t afford the charges now. Railway lines have to be rebuilt and used, not pulled up and sold. The road network is a shambles and instead of all road user fees ending up in general revenue it must go back to road construction. I have been told by my friends in indigenous communities many times that grant money for Aboriginal communities often does not make it to where it is needed. The whole system of welfare has to be overhauled so that disadvantaged people actually get assistance. This will be the start of the long road back to economic stability.
If you support me at the election you will get all the say. If you support the ALP or LNP you get NO SAY! Go to http://www.kattersaustralianparty.com.au my Facebook page or ring me on 0457 434 803 for policies, or if you can help on voting day. When you vote on January 31, please number every square. STATE ELECTION – JANUARY 31
Dalrymple Electorate... KAP CANDIDATE: SHANE
KNUTH
‘Guided by his passion for the Australian way of life’ As a railway worker for Qld Rail in the 1990’s, Shane Knuth decided he wanted to stop the neglect of rural Queensland. Against the odds, he won the seat of Charters Towers in 2004 and then went on to become the LNP Member for Dalrymple in 2009. By 2012, Mr Knuth believed the party that was supposed to defend regional Queensland, the Nationals, had lost many of their values after being taken over by the Liberal Party. True to his commitment to speak for rural Queensland, Mr Knuth decided to stand for the principles that led him into politics; and joined the KAP.
His choice was rewarded by the people of Dalrymple, who enabled him to advocate more strongly than ever against government policies he believes are destroying Queensland. Through his work on the Agriculture, Resource and Environment Committee, Mr Knuth has opposed legislation that would disadvantage agricultural and mining communities; and has introduced legislation to ensure dairy farmers are paid a fair price for milk. During his current term, he fought to protect prime agricultural land from coal seam gas operations and joined with independent MP’s to block the privatisation of water and electricity. Mr Knuth has opposed policy decisions such as the Rural Fire Levy imposed on residents and the massive pay rise for politicians. He has also stood against the appointment of a government friendly CMC. Guided by his passion for the Australian way of life and a fair go for everyone, Mr Knuth has never departed from his convictions,

in over a decade of serving the people of Dalrymple. He is passionate about elected representatives defending the interests of the people who elected them and believes this election is an opportunity to get balanced government and a better deal for rural and regional Queensland.
LNP CANDIDATE: LIZ
SCHMIDT
‘Committed to the people of Dalrymple’ LNP candidate for Dalrymple Liz Schmidt said she is committed to bringing electoral issues to the relevant minister and having them sorted swiftly. Ahead of the January 31 poll, Schmidt says she has learned a great deal about the Dalrymple electorate over the past three years and has received constant feedback from locals. “I’m committed to the people of Dalrymple,” she said. “Across the board, the feedback I’m getting is that people are not getting the representation of government they deserve.” A mother of five and grandmother of four, Schmidt has been involved in the agri-transport, thus understanding the needs of the agri-industry. Federally in 2013, the LNP gave the KAP a tremendous fright in the seat of Kennedy, by winning the pri-
mary vote. It was only after preferences, they fell short of winning the seat. These inroads translated into Dalrymple electorate towns, with Atherton (818 votes), Charters Towers (488) and Dimbulah (237 votes) three areas where the LNP vote spiked sharply from the 2012 state election. Front and foremost, Schmidt said she was a family person, who spent considerable time looking after people she cares about. Living permanently within the electorate, Schmidt’s sole purpose is to serve the electorate, after scaling back her business commitments. In a final message to readers from the Dalrymple electorate, Schmidt reaffirmed her commitment to addressing local issues with the relevant minister in office. “I can deal with ministers directly

‘I believe Queensland deserves an accountable, transparent government’
GREENS CANDIDATE:
VALERIE WEIER
GREENS candidate for Dalrymple Valerie Weier believes Queenslanders deserve a government that protects the environment and creates a just and equitable society, through economic prosperity. Having lived on the Tablelands for the past 13 years, Weier has attained a wealth of knowledge and experience through a vast assortment of volunteering positions. “My background is in nursing, natural therapies and social research. and I am motivated in all I do, by the strong desire for them to have a viable and happy future,” she said. Weier has passionately been an environment, social justice and anti-war advocate for over 40 years. She believes since the election of the Newman Government, several environmental ‘hardwon gains’ have been reversed. “People and communities across Queensland value their common rights and the wealth that our clean water, rich farmlands, unique wildlife and landscapes
bring to us,” she said. “Sadly at present much of these are under threat. “We are the caretakers of this fragile planet and need to deliver it to future generations in a better condition than when we inherited it.” In a final message to the Dalrymple electorate, Weier listed the following priorities of importance, should she be elected: Protect our land and water by fighting the expansion of coalseam gas and uranium mining into northern Queensland.

In a final message to the Dalrymple electorate, Mrs Kettleton outlined five key items which she would work towards for the community: Ensuring jobs and opportunity for the people of Dalrymple. ‘Strong voice for Dalrymple’ ALP candidate for Dalrymple Leanne Kettleton says she will be a strong voice for the Dalrymple electorate and encourages locals to vote Labor on January 31. Calling Moranbah a base over the past 26 years, Mrs Kettleton’s predominant priority during the campaign and beyond is local jobs. “At a time where statewide unemployment is 6.9 per cent and youth unemployment is at over 20 per cent, we know having a job is important; that’s why we are putting jobs and job creation first,” she said. Mrs Kettleton said it was a perfect opportunity for the Dalrymple electorate to send a message to LNP Premier Campbell Newman that they would not be taken for granted on Election Day. “The skilling (ALP ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’) program was among the first services cut by the Newman Government, despite

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
What are the implications of the LNP being re-elected in the upcoming election? Since the LNP have been in government, we have seen brutal cuts to tens of thousands of public service jobs. That translates into thousands of Queensland families thrown into an uncertain future. Many of them losing their livelihoods and ability to meet mortgage repayments, and flow-on impacts to their families and communities. The jobless rate in Queensland has gone up since the LNP was elected, from 4% to 6.9%. (stats taken from Working for Queenslanders. org.au) We also know that Australian politicians’ salaries are amongst the highest in the world. We’ve seen corporatisation and preparation for privatisation and the sale or lease of our public property and essential services, at great expense to Queensland taxpayers. The costs of the LNP’s advertising campaign to support their privatisation agenda have been exorbitant, amounting to over $100 million in taxpayer funds. Independent analysis by Professor John Quiggin, (UQ.) confirms that the 99 year lease of assets effectively amounts to their sale. There is no example, anywhere in the world, where privatisation of electricity services has reduced costs for consumers or led to improved standards of service delivery. In fact, it has led to foreign ownership of these assets, higher prices, less reliability of supply, lower standards of safety(contributing to the recent bushfires in Victoria) and job cuts, particularly for regional areas. Further, the sale or lease of public assets will actually increase our fiscal deficit in the longer term ( Quiggin report, 2014.) The facts just don’t stack up in favour of privatisation - it’s all spin. We’ve seen the rapid expansion of fossil fuel extraction through the coal and CSG industries in the face of global concern about climate change, as well as the lifting of the long-standing ban on uranium mining in Queensland under this LNP government. We’ve also seen preparations by this government to engage in large scale dredging and dumping of toxic dredge spoils within Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area in the face of UN concerns and widespread global opposition to the destruction of the reef. We’ve seen vicious cuts to frontline health and education

services and the severe undermining of our environmental laws to protect National Parks and other special places. The list goes on. What can we expect if they are re-elected? Further sales and leasing of our public property and essential services. Further severe cuts to our public services and widespread job losses. More large-scale coal mining, port development and shipping traffic through the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. More unconventional CSG extraction with its risk of serious contamination of our air, land and water supplies with toxic chemicals. We have a choice - on election day we can stop them doing any more damage by putting the LNP last on the ballot paper. Alan Isherwood, Atherton
Bike v Car conflict over road is rediculous
As one who finds the constant bicycle/automobile spats over road usage a tad tiresome if not ridiculous, I would like to inject some levity to the debate. Firstly, I must declare my interests to remain fair. I own and drive a registered car on the roads. I am a regular cyclist and make use of both the tarmac roads and the Atherton-Mareeba rail trail, managing to avoid the Tolga scrub and the large protective bridge girders on the latter. After all, to be run off the road into the scrub risks an argument with the ubiquitous stinging trees. Out of simple common sense, I try to avoid road areas where huge transports pass, with the capacity to air-blast me into the nearby potato paddocks, and straight stretches that permit (illegally) standing-start quarter mile trials by hoons on hire-purchase in dark coloured utes. I also tend to avoid unswept road repairs, where the shotgun pellet effect of innumerable passing vehicle-launched sharp-edged road metal pieces can be extremely discouraging to the avid cyclist. I pay nothing for the privilege of cycling on the road, but I bought my bike locally so the knowledge that the bike shop owner pays tax to the government, etc., etc., eases my conscience insofar as indirect contribution to the road maintenance goes. Now that some motorists have seen fit to rattle on about cyclists, I feel that it’s time to ratchet the argument down a little – to dog owners. How I wish their dogs had number plates, sufficiently visible to enable them to be identified so that errant canines could be reported to some authority for hogging the track! After all, complaining seems to be the “modede-jour” in attempts to deal with such vexing matters. Perhaps pet owners feel entitled to walk on one side of the track while their dog strains at the leash to maintain a path on the other all because they pay a registration fee to the local council. Then again, they probably have more right to the track, if the logic of the anti-cyclist lobby is adopted. It is not principle that will mitigate the possibility of “pistols at dawn” among wayusers. In my humble view, it is behaviour. A cyclist may feel that they have the “right” to Be physically active. Kick off the year - get your health into gear!
It’s that time of year again, when we pull out the notepad and make our resolutions for the year ahead, with the resolve to actually follow through! Research shows that while more than seven million Aussies planned to make a New Year’s Resolution in 2015, the majority (three in four) find it difficult to carry out their goals. The study also found that two in three Aussies didn’t succeed with their resolutions in 2014. Maintaining good health is one that seems to crop up on people’s list every year, and one of the most popular resolutions for 2015 – an important one to keep! This year, more than 1200 Far North Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer. Many people may not realise that one third of all cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices, which is why it’s crucial we do what we can to reduce our risk of cancer. Getting your health back on track doesn’t mean overhauling your whole lifestyle, it can be a few small changes to your meals or physical activity habits that can make a big difference. We offer up five New Year health and wellbeing Resolutions to help cut your cancer risk. Lose weight. Did you know a waistline over 100cm for men and 85cm for women can increase the risk of certain cancers, including bowel, breast and oesophageal? Minor parties have no chance Another election and more nonsense from the ALP and LNP who expect us to believe their platitudes and rhetoric that we hear at every other election. Now we are forced to endure the opportunistic candidates who have nominated as
candidates at the last minute. These last minute nominees must know they have absolutely no chance of winning a seat; for example in Cook that takes in Cape York, Mareeba, Mossman and Port Douglas. What they are after is the lucrative $2.90 per vote paid by the State Government for the number of votes a candidate receives if they poll over six per cent of the primary vote. Although achieving six per cent would be most unlikely for either PUP, the Greens or the independent in Cook, it shows they have little understanding of the real bread and butter issues that genuine candidates are trying to fix. I haven’t yet formed a definite decision on how I will vote, but I am warming to Katters Party because of the stand they have taken on job creation, asset sales and the ‘last stand’ meeting at Winton where Bob and Robbie Katter, along with Alan Jones from 2GB told the banks to back off desperate farmers. A few months ago I heard Lee Marriott talking about the dangers of coal seam gas mining and I think he has done his homework. Brian Ottewill, Mareeba
Knuth on Trusting Politicians Imagine my surprise to hear on ABC Radio today, (14 January), Shane Knuth holding forth about people not trusting politicians. For the moment he seemed to forget that his assessment also applied to himself not just members of the major parties who he was trying to point the finger at. What makes his assessment even more remarkable is his own record in the trust department. This from a politician who abandoned his loyal supporters without notice just prior to the last election for a fling with the Katter Party, timing his move to give his replacement candidate little chance of being elected. The result for Dalrymple being three years in the political wilderness. As an act of political treachery this would take some beating. Trust indeed. Ray Byrnes, Yungaburra
Mareeba bypass or ring road The Queensland state election is to be held on Saturday 31st January 2015 – One of the pledges made by the current Member for Cook Mr David Kempton at the 2012 state election was to move forward the planning and eventual construction of the much warranted Mareeba bypass or ring road. It has now been a further three years and to the best of my knowledge, the Main Roads Department still has this proposed bypass or ring road on a future 20 year plan. I would like to point out to all candidates in the forthcoming state election that the following three main points should be the focus of their attention when drafting their priorities for the electorate of Cook: 1. All heavy vehicle traffic currently passing through the main street of Mareeba, (heading north to the cape) etc – (all the heavy vehicles carting fermented rubbish from Cairns to the Mareeba landfill) also pass through the main business area of Mareeba 7 days a week 365 days of the year – the revenue raised by Mareeba Shire Council from this rubbish is critical to the bottom line of the local budget, but to have the continual foul smell of spores from rotten fermented waste being subjected to those working or just shopping in town is not in the best interest of the health and safety of all concerned. 2. The number of near misses that occur in the main street of Mareeba on a regular daily basis is quite alarming – one only has to stop and view the traffic for five minutes – I am quite sure that if you were to ask the heavy vehicle drivers if they enjoy the russian roulette drive through Byrnes Street (particularly Monday to Friday) you will get a very clear negative answer – an alternative route around Mareeba (as was proposed 40 years ago) is what is needed today. This bypass strategically aligns with the new Mareeba industrial estate. 3. Every wet season in Mareeba (particularly where heavy falls occur in the Springmount – Walsh river catchment), you can guarantee that the Granite Creek bridge will flood cutting off all traffic to Dimbulah and the Cape - when the flooding of the Granite Creek bridge occurs emergency services have to plan to have vehicles and staff available on the northern side of the river and staff have to access these vehicles via the railway bridge if the river floods for days – not the best of options in 2015, particularly when back up vehicles and staff could be required for larger incidents north of the Granite Creek bridge. Using slightly damp hands, roll the mixture into golf ball sized meatballs, put on a plate and let them sit in the fridge for half an hour. 3. Take the meatballs out of the fridge and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll each meatball lightly in the sugar and place on the parchment. 4. Bake the meatballs in the centre of the oven for 15 minutes, giving the pan a shake a few times to make sure you get even browning.

Sayers tames MacoTrac ahead of new beginning By Justin Fris
CAREFULLY putting on his helmet and going through his final adjustments, Callan Sayers appears at ease with his upcoming task. While sharp ‘paperclip’ turns of the MacoTrac may cause others to look away, Sayers is in complete control. Spending time with friends and sponsors at a special function last Wednesday, locals were given a rare opportunity to share a lap with one of FNQ’s most promising athletes. “Today is all about giving team partners a bit of fun,” he said. “We have set up a BBQ and people have been able to come down for a look.” Always walking with motorsport passion in his stride, Sayers began gokarting from the age of nine. He reminds me of Australian F1 ace Daniel Ricciardo; a fresh faced smile on the surface, with a steely resolve for success beneath it. In tandem with his father Alan, Sayers would wake early (around 6am) every Saturday morning and undergo preparations of his kart, before heading to track. Reflecting on these times, fun was clearly a motivator for him, which translated to a steady incline of success during his late teens. “In terms of free practice, we would have about two to three sessions before a race,” he said. “Being on the front row was my favourite place on the grid, but it was always only about having fun.” After graduating from St Marys
Catholic College in 2010, Sayers spent 2011 away from the track, in a bid to secure his educational future. “I studied physics and IT at school and actually topped the IT class during my final year,” he said. “I enjoyed the multimedia component (putting videos together etc) of the course.” Education has never suffered at the hands of chasing the dream, with both Sayers’ parents and mentor Michael Peakman keeping his feet firmly on the ground. “It has sometimes been a tough challenge balancing it all and I’ve really had to knuckle down,” he said. “Michael said once (jokingly) that if I ever failed a class, he’d take my wheels off.” In his limited downtime, Sayers likes to relax and spend plenty of time with family and friends, along with running and enjoying a good book. “It’s also good to have some of my mates come around and have compete on my racing simulator,” he said. Sayers’s debut will be at Sandown (regular V8’s will be in Adelaide) on the weekend of March 28 and 29. He will return to Victoria between June 12 to 14 (Winton), travel to Ipswich (Aug 7 to 9), Phillip Island (Sep 18 to 20), before finishing in Sydney (Nov 13 to 15). Sayers’ team would like to thank both the Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort, along with their clothing partner, Xklusiv. The Express will keep in regular contact with Sayers during his first season and will keep everyone updated with his progress.

Punishing storm surge washes away result By Justin Fris

FREAKISH storm conditions caused havoc at Kerribee Park last Sunday during the Mareeba Bandits and Barron cricket match. With horizontal rain lashing down on surface and onlookers alike, a brutal gust of wind upended the main grandstand, causing it to fall on a parked car. Fortunately, no one was either in the car or grandstand at the time of the incident, but it did make for a disappointing end to the day’s play. The hosts won the toss earlier in the day and elected to bat. Although on the road, the heavy cloud cover would have appealed to the Barron bowling attack, who struck early. Disciplined from the start, Barron forced the home side on almost every delivery. Creative stroke play was kept to a minimum, as the runs dried up. The visitors’ patience was finally rewarded, beating the bat on several occasions, which allowed for a major batting collapse by the home side. Floundering at 5/46 during the 15th over, youngsters Lachlan Ford and Rowan Foxwell were required to stand up and be counted. Both were fiercely determined in the middle, with Foxwell doggedly keeping the Barron bowlers at bay. Ford was eventually trumped by
Chris Todd, who caught (three overall) his errant miscue in the deep. An innings with Brett ‘Stretch’ Brewer is always entertaining, as he never leaves anything in the tank. True to his form, Brewer added extra life to the innings, with his shots and overall presence lifting hope. The hosts were positioned at 8/83 in the 26th over, when the stormy conditions finally hammered down and ensured the match was rained out. Both sides would have been disappointed with weather interrupting play, as both gained plenty out of the match. Barron’s bowling attack was simply excellent. Peter Whitehead continued his good form, with Hayden Slattery (3/13) and Reyoen Dahal (2/6) chiming in well. The Bandits have been in good form of late, with their younger brigade stamping themselves on the senior group. Brendan Falvo, Lachlan Ford and Rowan Foxwell are leading a new push of cricketers from the next generation. Watching these youngsters showing so much promise early on in their career, really is a plus for the town. Club officials and players have every right to be pleased about the future of their club, leading into the final few matches of the season.

Far North Qld futsal again shines on national stage FAR North Queensland futsal has again dominated on the national stage, after a solid showing at the 2015 National Futsal Championships. Under the guidance of Ronnie Leporati, the U/15’s began the tournament positively, remaining undefeated during the preliminary group stage. One of these group matches was against the NNSW Country, where the plucky northerners drew 4-4. The two sides would ultimately again cross paths later on in the final. Before the final, the boys were subject to a thrilling semi-final, which was sealed by a last gasp goal in the second period of extra time. “It was 2-all after normal time and we were told there would be a ‘golden goal’ period (2x5 min halves) to find a winner,” Mr Leporati said. “It got to the end of extra time and we
managed to score a goal with 40 seconds left in the final period.” The final proved to be a bridge to far for FNQ, who trailed 3-1 at half time against NNSW Country, after conceding some basic mistakes. “We had five shots which hit the post in the second half,” he said. “It was just one of the days where the ball wouldn’t go in the goal.” Mr Leporati said his team was ‘absolutely gutted’ after the 7-3 defeat, but said the long-term future of his players is very bright. “Our team is also the only Australian (U/15) team invited to an upcoming futsal tournament in Japan,” he said. “It will run in June and will include several talented japanese teams, along with teams from countries such as Brazil and Spain.”

(L-R) Alexi Sachlikidis (Qld Sport and Recreation), Jim Goldsmith (Mareeba Metal Merchants), Gary Cross (Mareeba Speedway) and Erika Gee-Kot (Qld Sport and Recreation) By Justin Fris
MAREEBA Speedway officials are optimistic about the future of motorsport on the Tablelands, after receiving a sizeable grant from Qld Sport and Recreation. The Express, along with Alexi Sachlikidis and Erika Gee-Kot (from QSR), spent time with Gary Cross (Club Treasurer) and Jim Goldsmith (Mareeba Metal Merchants) inspecting the track last Thursday. All work done to improve the facility has been down to the unrivalled dedication by club volunteers. Mr Cross said the new facilities would ensure the club would be better off in the long-term. “At the end of the day, if we have better fencing, we will receive a better insurance premium,” he said. “As Mareeba’s climate is typically dry, our course is viewed as a low-risk facility.” The club plans to cover the entire circumference of the track with a concrete wall, which ideally will be finished by March-April. “Cairns Speedway has enquired to us about possibly using our track for some meetings, due to their inclimate weather affecting some of their race meets,” he said. “With our new fencing, our track will be classed with the second highest category in Australia, which would give us an opportunity to host monster trucks and sprint cars at our race meets.” Mr Goldsmith, who has been a passionate volun-

teer and supporter for the Speedway for several years, said he was keen for the younger generation to enjoy the new facilities. “Hopefully with the addition of the lights (ensuring night meets), we should get more attendance,” he said. “If we were able to shift our meets from Sunday afternoon to Saturday night, it would hopefully give the younger generation a new entertainment outlet. “Our climate suits night meetings and it could provide an opportunity for local schoolchildren to participate in the meets (for example, through singing during intermission) which would provide terrific exposure.” After inspecting the new facilities, Mr Sachlikidis said he was impressed at how the club had made every dollar stretch. “The grant ($100,000) was designed to cover stage one of the project,” he said. “Club officials then notified us that after stage one was complete, they still had around $18,000 left over. “We knew the club had a plan and stage two of the project was very similar and within the same scope.” After approval, the additional grant money was used to purchase 22x LED light globes, along with further fencing. Mr Cross wanted to thank the tireless work of AFRIM Bresa fencing and paving, who had volunteered significant dedication, time and resources in assisting the rapid progress happen.
