A LOCAL weather enthusiast is hoping to get local community scientists together to help record and manage weather data across the Tablelands.

Richard Hole from Tolga is hoping that by forming a group of local weather watchers, it will help with better weather forecasts for the Tablelands.

“I’m looking for people to help record the weather, as data is a valuable asset when it comes to predicting weather patterns,” Richard said.

“The more people we can get the more precise the data and the more accurate the forecasts.”

Currently the Bureau of Metrology (BOM) measures its temperatures with an instrument called a Stevenson Screen which is a double-louvered box which protects the instruments from the sun and also provides ventilation.

Richard has several Stevenson Screens and weather instruments that he wants to loan and he has also invented a small Hanging Weather Instrument Shelter.

“I have about six weather boxes that I can loan out to people to record weather data in their back yard, all people need is a flat open yard,” he said.

“It would also be good to find people to help set up affordable but accurate automatic weather stations.

“I think we could provide more accurate and detailed short range weather forecasts than the BOM.” Richard is looking long term and one day he is hoping they may be able to gather readings

“The data gathered could be uploaded to the internet to provide up to date records and forecasts.

“We are also seeking past weather records from citizens such as rainfall figures.”

New Council delivers new balanced budget

THE new Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) handed down its first budget on Friday since being elected to office in March.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti announced that the 2020–21 budget was a balanced one after inheriting a budget deficit from the previous council of approximately $3.5 million dollars “Prior to the completion of the audit for the 2019–20 year, our best advice is that Council will likely face a deficit of approximately $3.5M. Against that, today’s $60.4M blueprint outlines both a balanced budget and a freeze on rates,” Mayor Marti said.

“We had to make a call on rates to minimise the impact on our community and we have acted by freezing the general rate across all categories.

“This acknowledges the unfolding impacts of Covid-19 and puts a halt to the stiff rates trend over recent years. Rates affordability is a big issue and we have listened.”

While rate freezes will be good news to residents, there will be small price rises in utilities.

Water access will increase $31/year, waste will increase $16/year and sewerage increases $23/year while water consumption has gone up 0.16c/kL Mr Marti said that with a flatline on general rates and subsequent revenue, TRC must now

Greedy drug dealers arrested in Atherton

COUNCIL HAS COMMITTED $60.4M IN OPERATIONAL SPENDING

FIVE men have been arrested, three of them on the Tablelands, after a light plane that was allegedly flying drugs from PNG crashed not long after taking off.

The Cessna 420C crashed after taking off from an airstrip about 30km north of Port Moresby, on July 26. It’s believed that the flight originated from the Mareeba Airport before arriving in PNG on Sunday afternoon.

Since the crash the AFP has charged five Members of a Melbourne-based criminal syndicate, with alleged links to Italian organised crime, for conspiring to import over 500 kilograms of cocaine from PNG into Australia.

Allegedly the group travelled from Melbourne and Sydney to Atherton between July 19 and 25, with the aim of carrying out the importation and collection of cocaine from PNG, estimated to be valued at more than $80 million – the equivalent of about 500,000 street deals.

The group then allegedly flew the light aircraft to PNG on the morning of July 26, where a member of the group (a pilot) attempted to collect the illicit cargo.

The AFP alleges the aircraft flew at about 3000 feet from Mareeba to PNG, in an effort to avoid radar detection. The aircraft crashed while attempting to take-off from a remote airstrip at Papa Lea Lea, north of Port Moresby. The AFP alleges greed played a significant part in the crash as the weight of the cocaine impacted the planes ability to take off.

On July 28, the pilot, presented himself to the Australian Consulate in PNG. He has been arrested and charged with a PNG Immigration offence.

In May TRC Councillors and senior staff voted to forego their scheduled annual increase in remuneration.

“Over the coming year we’ll have a close look at aging and

under-utilised assets and review all rates concessions,” said the Mayor.

“Some decisions won’t be popular, but such reviews are necessary.”

Some of the big ticket items in the budget included $4.7 million for the Ravenshoe irrigation area, $2.7 millions for the Mary Street Bridge, $1.5 million for the Theresa Creek Road widen and seal and $1.45 million for the Blencoe Creek bridge upgrade.

Rebuilding a better life

A NEW program where homeless men rebuild old pushbikes has been launched in the hope that it will increase the men’ confidence and life skills.

Mareeba Community Housing Company (MCHC) has formed the Men’s wellbeing program for homeless men. The program brings the men together on a regular basis to rebuild and refurbish old pushbikes.

It’s hoped that by rebuilding the bikes the men will learn and share new skills like team building, communication, punctuality and pride in a job well done.

Robert Larkin, Housing Supervisor at MCHC said that the programs aim is to assist by building rapport and connections with other men.

“We had some old pushbikes that were donated, and we were looking at a way to get the men to come in and use their hands to learn new skills,” Mr Larkin said “Once they have been refurbished, we aim to donate them to underprivileged children who may not have a bike.

“This way we can get them to come to the centre, building strong and mutually respectful relationships with them as it gives them a purposeful reason to visit and stay for a little while and hopefully, they

to start ‘Community Supported Agriculture’ (CSA) and call it the RealFood network.

“Farmers were telling us that they needed help getting their product to locals and they needed to get a fair price too,” Chris said.

“In the beginning we decided we would ask the farmers what price they wanted and that we would never negotiate the price down. We try and work with the price they want for their product.

“Now we are a 365 days a year collaboration between volunteers and local farmers, to provide the freshest local fruit and vegetables to consumers.”

Today the RealFood network has nearly 200 suppliers, from large monoculture farms, such as Skybury and Pinata, to smaller family farms and backyarders, who may have a few exotic trees and/or unique vegetables.

The farmers stretch from Bloomfield to Innisfail with hundreds of volunteers helping with distribution transport and

Tablelands leading studs open THE Tablelands Better Beef Open Day is back better than ever in 2020.

The inaugural Tablelands Better Beef Open Day in 2019 saw large numbers of beef producers travelling across the region to visit some of our best studs.

Now the second annual Better Beef Open Day is happening on Sunday, August 16 with 11 leading studs from Julatten in the north to Maalan in south, opening their gates for one day only.

President of the Open Day, Nick Trompf said that the day is a way for beef cattle producers to visit a range of properties on the one day and potentially see hundreds of cattle on display.

“The Open Day last year really opened the eyes of visitors to the quality of bulls and females produced by these studs on the Tablelands,” he said.

“For many years cattle breeders have trekked south in search

New Push for Ootann Road fix KATTER Australia party candidate for Cook Tanika Parker has made her first promise, that if elected the sealing of Ootann Road would be high on her priority list.

Recently, Ms Parker, Member for Hill Shane Knuth and KAP leader Robbie Katter MP attended a meeting with concerned truck drivers and residents near Ootann Rd to talk about what they can do.

Ootann Rd is a 91.4km road that if fully sealed would connect the Cape to southern markets. The beginning of the road starts just a few kilometres outside of Almaden and comes out 20km south of Mount Garnet.

A total of 86.6km is in the Mareeba Shire Council district with 78km still needing to be sealed.

If elected Ms Parker said she would advocate for funding to get the road sealed.

“The residents need this,” Ms Parker said. “It is going to open the Cape up and help alleviate the stress to our graziers, farmers, fishermen, and construction industry.

“If Brisbane had an issue with a main road that is used to export resources such as cattle, cotton and produce they would have already come up with the funding to fix it.

“This is something that the people want and needs to happen.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said he could testify to how bad the condition of the road was as he had blown a couple of tyres himself while travelling it.

“Governments cannot hide from putting money into infrastructure when there are billions of dollars of NAIF funding just sitting there,” Mr Knuth said.

“There are projects of strategic importance, such as Ootann Road, that would be a huge benefit for industries.

“Upgrading this road would provide huge relief to transport operators and take the stress off Tablelands roads and the Bruce Highway.”

Transport business owners and hay growers from Mutchilbah Lucy Bowyer and Terry McFarlane have been calling for the road to be maintained and sealed for years.

“We would love to see the road sealed but even being properly maintained would be a brilliant start, so trucks aren’t getting destroyed and are happy to use the road,” Ms Bowyer said.

“It would be a huge benefit for northern producers.

“Anything over a B-Double can go through the Tablelands but anything classed as a road train must unhook from Mareeba to Mount Garnet and take one trailer at a time.”

She said if the road was maintained and sealed, they could travel the whole distance to southern markets, but Main Roads also need to work on making the Mareeba to Almaden road a three-trailer road.

“If that was fixed, they could have 450m trucks all the way to the south on the inland roads,” Ms Bowyer said.

Historical Society reopens AFTER a short closure due to COVID-19, the Historical Society of Mareeba are reopening their rooms to the public on Saturday, August 8 from, 7.30am till noon, along with the reopening of the Mareeba Markets Secretary of the historical society Helen Kindt said

Rangers recognised on World Ranger Day WORLD Ranger Day was celebrated last Friday and payed homage to the tireless work that our local rangers put into their work keeping our national parks healthy and safe every year.

Celebrated across the globe the day honours the courage, sacrifice and important work of rangers as they protect Australia’s natural heritage and preserve Earth’s biodiversity all at the risk of their own safety.

While World Ranger Day is to celebrate Rangers and the work they do, it is also to honour those Rangers killed or injured in the line of duty.

There are a plethora of national parks dotted around the area that are under the supervision and care of rangers with many of them holding popular swimming areas like Emerald Creek Falls and Davies Creek.

Brittney Butler has been a Field Ranger for over five years and currently works for the Mareeba Management Unit for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Partnerships, she has expressed her love and passion for her job and the work she does.

“I enjoy the diverse work that we get to cover, working on the land is something that is important to me culturally,” she said.

“It is important to me to contribute to being a role model for the next up and coming Rangers to work on country for country.

“There is not a day that is the same; we are constantly making memories when working on Parks.”

Brittney started her Ranger career amongst the Limestone country of Chillagoe which

is ranked to have some of the best caves in Australia; she then worked in areas dotted around the Cape and Gulf where she gained an appreciation for her own “best backyard”.

“Remote places in the Cape and Gulf are up there with my favourite places to work or visit,” she said.

“We really do have the best backyard and that is why it is so important to look after our country.

“World Ranger Day is a great day to just sit down and really have a good think about what is going on around us and recognise the work that is being done around the world, or better yet the work we are doing right here in our beautiful home of Far North Queensland.”

Spring Field Day on again in 2020 AFTER the success of last year’s Spring Field Day, organisers have decided to repeat the event in 2020.

The next Spring Field Day is happening on Friday, August 28 at 539 Mulligan Highway Biboohra. The aim of the day is to help farmers and agricultural producers learn more about cover crop solutions Organiser Tony Matchett from Savannah Ag Consulting said that there will be more than 20 different crop types shown and discussed in depth.

“There will be a lot to see and discuss with a very diverse range of crops on show,” he said.

“Our business is all about exploring new opportunities

for growers, we are going to be looking at over 20 different crops including Spring Oilseed Options, Winter Pulse Crops, Cereals and Coarse Grains, Cover Crops, Spring Pulse and Legumes as well as Specialty Crops.

“We will also highlight our three-year project titled ‘Developing an oilseed industry in Northern Australia.

“Locally grown seeds and grains and oils could be an opportunity for growers to tap into a new market.”

Commercial lime grower Michelle Milicevic from Mutchilba hopes trials of tea tree, woodchip and hay mulches will help to reduce chemical inputs and inform other primary producers.

“This year we’ve been working on lessening chemical inputs and applying compost and mulch is part of this,’’ Mrs Milicevic said.

“We usually spray to keep the weeds down so that our sprinklers work well. Now we’re mowing the weeds and throwing them back under the trees instead, and the trials are giving us an idea of how the different types of mulches perform.”

Program Co-ordinator at Terrain NRM Rowan Shee said two sites with tea tree, woodchip and hay mulch would be monitored on a six-monthly basis over the next four years.

“We’ll compare baseline soil assessments with a focus on carbon levels and building up the soil’s biology and looking at things like water infiltration and compaction levels,” he said.

The trials are part of Terrain NRM’s Digging Deeper Plus soil health project which is working with over 150 farmers across the Wet Tropics region through farm workshops with soil health practitioners, tailored farm management plans and free soil tests.

The Wet Tropics Soil Group spokesperson Mal Everett said the benefits of mulch were welldocumented – from building up organic matter and improving water-holding capacity to suppressing weeds and reducing run-off.

“Now we want to look more closely at the soil biology side of things,’’ he said. “Hay has always been the standard mulch for commercial crops. With a gradual resurgence in the tea tree industry and sources for more woodchip on the Tablelands now seems like a good time to be assessing options.”

Growers seek clarity on future of government laboratories THE region’s leading horticultural advocacy group FNQ Growers wants clarity from the Queensland Government on the status of leaf and soil testing facilities.

FNQ Growers Chair Joe Moro has called on the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to have laboratories for leaf tissue and soil testing based back in Far North Queensland.

“Our region’s growers are at the forefront of innovation and have diversified into a number of different crops over the years,” Mr Moro said.

“Critical to the establishment of new industries, and the longterm viability of well-established crops, is the availability of infrastructure and services that support horticultural growers, this includes leaf and soil testing.”

“We believe the absence of these facilities puts our growers at significant disadvantage and could hinder opportunities for our growers and the regional generally, to contribute to the

state’s long- term advantage as a premier fresh food producer.”

Mr Moro said that even though soil testing left the Far North quite a few years ago the issue has resurfaced.

“Due to the industry now being so big in FNQ, people feel that some sort of facility should be based locally,” he said.

“We are a billion dollar plus industry in FNQ and we employ over 35,000 people, a lot of growers are asking why don’t we have these services locally.”

At the moment all soil and leaf testing needs to be sent to Brisbane which can take weeks for results to be returned.

“We would like facilities in either Mareeba or South Johnstone; this would also help farmers in Lakeland and Georgetown as well,” Mr Moro said.

Local Mareeba farmer Max Srhoj said that the couple of weeks that it takes to get results from Brisbane can mean the difference between a successful crop or losing an entire crop.

“By getting results quickly

means we can save the crop by putting in whatever trace elements are needed, but if you have to wait over a week, it could all be too late,” Mr Srhoj said.

“By the time you get the results the problem could be too far gone, if it was local we could have results in a day or two.

“They keep saying we are the food bowl of Queensland, but when it comes to research and testing we’ve got nothing.”

A spokesperson from The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) said they have not provided routine soil and leaf nutrient analyses since the 1990s.

“It is more efficient and economical to use commercial laboratories for these tests and DAF itself uses these commercial service providers to have soil and leaf samples analysed,” “The Queensland Government recognises the importance of the horticultural industry in Far North Queensland and maintains a strong presence.”

That code of conduct did not have any legal force, but after a considerable delay, the Queensland government passed regulations to put it into effect.

“The last Cruise-in was in February and since then we have been looking forward to getting the all clear for our next event,” said Secretary of the Atherton Men’s Shed John Whyte.

“On the Tablelands there are a few hundred people with classic or restored cars and these people like getting together for social nights and there’s not a lot of opportunity for that.

“Our cruise in is not a car show, there’s no competitions or show and shine, it’s just people who own cars, getting together and its open to the public as well.”

In the past the Atherton Cruise-in has attracted up to 90 cars, trucks and motorbikes on display and anyone can bring their car along to be put on display.

The Cruise-in is on from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at Railway Lane, Atherton. Admission is free and the Men’s Shed will be running a BBQ and sausage sizzle to help raise funds on the night.

There are some myths going around about what rights tenants and landlords have in the pandemic. In particular, there is no automatic right to a 50% rent discount. Read on to find out how the system works.

If a tenant requests renegotiation of the rent or conditions under the lease, parties must enter into negotiations provided that; 1. the tenant has an annual turnover of less than $50 million, or is not-for-profit; and 2. the tenant is eligible for the JobKeeper scheme.

The landlord and tenant must share enough information with each other to enable them to negotiate in a fair and transparent way. During the negotiations, both the landlord and tenant must cooperate and act reasonably and in good faith. At the end of the negotiations, the landlord is obliged to make an offer to the tenant. If agreement cannot be reached, or a party does not negotiate, the matter can be referred to the Small Business Ombudsman.

For affected tenants: • Start the renegotiation process.

• Do not simply stop paying your rent or expect your landlord to stop charging rent.

• Get your business records in order so that you can demonstrate the impact of the COVID-19 measures on your business.

For affected landlords: • Do not increase the rent payable before 1 October 2020.

• Be cautious about taking action against a tenant for failure to pay rent during this period.

• Speak with your bank about what options are available if your tenants are unable topay the full rent.

Finally, make sure that any agreement you reach is recording in writing and that changes to the lease are reflected in formal, enforceable documentation.

Tablelands girl wants a farmer

EMMA Hayes grew up in Atherton and Tolga before moving to Brisbane to further her hairdressing career. Now the 33 year-old business owner is looking for love on Channel Seven’s ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’.

Emma went to school at Atherton State Primary and Atherton High. Growing up on the Tablelands meant that she has an attraction for country boys.

“A man in an Akubra is hot, I also don’t mind a guy with a beard and he has to be handy with his hands, someone who works on the land is my type of guy,” she said.

“I prefer a guy who is a bit more rugged rather than metrosexual city boys.”

Emma, who is now based in Brisbane, said she was having no luck in love in Brisbane and after being single for five years, said it was now time to put her love life first.

“Going onto Farmer Wants A Wife meant I could put my heart and soul into finding Mr Right,”she said.

On the TV show Emma was picked to spend time with Farmer Nick who owns a vineyard in Deviot, Tasmania.

Despite the long distance between Brisbane and Tasmania Emma said she is a lover of love.

“I would do anything for

love, there is no reason why I couldn’t open a second salon in Tasmania or he may be willing to move to Queensland,” “Owning a vineyard is also a bit of a bonus.”

Emma said that what’s inside was more important to her than looks.

“I think what’s on the inside matters more than what you look like on the outside. I’m keen to get to know Nick and his values.”

Not only is Emma looking for a country boy she also has a few other boxes that she likes ticked.

“I like an emotionally intelligent guy, someone who will be there for the good and the bad and someone with a really big heart,” she said.

“Being a hairdresser I’m also a little fussy about men’s hair, men need to have hair.”

Emma said she will be back on the Tablelands visiting family before the end of the year and if things don’t work out with her and Nick she is open to finding a country boy from Tablelands.

“Maybe I could do some speed dating of hairdresser wants to find a farmer.”

AFTER Darryl Ely’s football career was cut short due to a motorbike accident 40 years ago, he needed something to keep his mind and hands active while recuperating.

Darryl started making art with bits and pieces he had laying around the house. That decision lead him to forge a career as an artist making objects from scrap metal, kitchen accessories, waste timber and whatever he can get his hands on.

“I love going bush and finding things that I can turn into art, things like driftwood, old mining equipment and old railway timber and iron,” he said.

“The items I find designate the shape of my sculptures, Darryl’s works have now sold

at galleries across Australia with much of his artwork finding its way into the homes of discerning collectors from overseas.

“I’m constantly looking for materials at second hand shops, garage sales and car wreckers.”

“I’ve made coconut trees from forks, goannas from spanners and birds from scrap metal.”

One of Darryl’s biggest inspirations is animals.

“Doing a sculpture of a person is more involved and takes more time, animals are easier and they seem to sell.”

Darryl said that he is trying to avoid the throw away world.

“When I see some metal lying around I don’t like just throwing it out, when I can make something from it that hopefully

lasts, even my furniture is made from hand.”

For the past 20 years Darryl was selling his artwork at Tolga Woodworks, but now he sells at a gallery in Kuranda and the Mareeba Art Gallery, next to the Heritage Centre.

“I started at the artist’s cooperative at Kuranda and that was the highlight, we sold a lot of recycled art back then,” he said.

“When 9/11 happened a lot of the wealthy Americans stopped travelling, so a lot of the high end art work stopped selling.

“I used to have artwork in Townsville, Port Douglas and Cairns, but all those galleries have now gone.”

COMMUNITY funerals will be hosting a ‘Dying to Know Day’ where locals can learn how to open up the conversations around death and dying and how to cope.

The annual Dying to Know Day is run by The Groundswell Project, a not-for-profit organisation that is now in its 7th year of celebrating Dying to Know Day. It’s an annual day dedicated to activating conversations and community actions around death, dying and bereavement.

People are often ill-equipped to start a conversation or how to support a loved one who is dying, caring or grieving and Dying to Know day aims to help change that.

Dying to Know Day is designed to change this by activating conversations, encouraging

death literacy and providing a space to talk about end of life plans individuals, families and even whole communities can learn to deal with death better.

This year Community Funerals have put their hands up to help host the event on Saturday, August 8 at their newly opened office in Atherton.

Community Funerals Atherton Funeral Coordinator Sharon Fittler is happy to help to start the conversation around death and how to cope.

“It’s to open up the conversation around death and dying,” she said.

“She had brought it to other community organisations to host the event but no one had picked it up so we got involved.

“We thought what a great way to break down those barriers and ask all those questions

that they wouldn’t know who else to ask.”

The decision to host the event came after Community Funerals was approached by a palliative care worker at the Atherton Hospital who asked Community Funerals if they would be happy to host the day for the community.

This year’s campaign theme is Death: It Takes All of Us which aims to encourage communities and individuals to consider what part they can play is supporting each other in times of vulnerability.

New trial underway for safer wildlife fencing

ABOUT six years ago Jennifer Mclean, the Director of the Tolga Bat Hospital, rescued 109 bats from one road in one day. After that particular day she started thinking about a way to prevent animal deaths rather than try to fix them after the event.

Jenny then started the Wildlife Friendly Fencing Project as a way to investigate safer fencing options for Australian wildlife.

“Barbed wire fences can be very dangerous for a large number of native animals, largely for animals at night that can't see them,” she said.

“Those most often entangled are owls, flying foxes, smaller bats and gliders. In some parts of Australia macropods are regularly hung up as they try to jump over a fence and their legs go between the top and second strand.”

According to research more than 75 wildlife species have been identified in Australia as occasional or regular victims of barbed wire fences.

Jenny said at the Wildlife Friendly Fencing Project they have been investigating ways to reduce the risk to wildlife in rural areas.

“Many animals fail to see the fence, or cannot clear the height under windy conditions. Most of those rescued are too severely damaged to return to the wild,” she said.

“Fences can be made more visible in a number of ways.

The new trial will hopefully prevent flying foxes getting caught on barbed wire fences.

“Including the use of white electric fence tape (non-electrified) top-of-post to top-of-post, metal tags hung off a fence or white poly pipe split and placed over the wire.

“There are hotspots for entanglement where fences are near a feed tree, on a ridge line or over water where animals fly to drink from. Two of the worst hotspots for this on the Tablelands are Bones Knob and Bromfield Swamp.”

The Wildlife Friendly Fencing Project is hoping to raise awareness of the impact of

barbed wire fencing on Australian wildlife, and developing guidelines for good practice.

“Barbed wire in particular is a major hazard for wildlife. Each year thousands of animals face a cruel death or permanent injury from entanglement on barbs, usually on the top strand,” Jenny said.

“There are also other fencing hazards. Kangaroos get hung up in fences that are too high, whether plain or barbed, a situation made worse by the bottom strand of the fence being too low.

Students dress for high tea success STUDENTS at Mareeba State School got their first taste of the high life after their annual Year 6 High Tea was hosted last Friday.

The Year 6 High Tea is an event now in its 4th year with students getting the chance to dress up elegantly and have some tea snacks with their peers and faculty.

Students buy a ticket to participate in the High Tea with all

funds raised going directly to The Cancer Council and cancer research.

The idea was comprised to bring all the kids together and bond all the while raising money for The Cancer Council.

MSS Head of Curriculum Year 3 to 6, Nadine Apps looks forward to the high tea every year and all the fancy costumes the students wear.

“We have 66 students attending this year’s High Tea and the numbers seem to increase every year,” she said.

“We’ve had students dress up in full suits and ball gowns before.

“We love to see all the students getting involved and dressing up, they take pride in the way they look and they certainly act and look elegant.”

Year six students at Mareeba State School dressed the part on Friday for the annual High Tea.

For the crust: ▶ 1/2 cup shredded coconut ▶ 1 cup roasted cashews ▶ 1 1/2 tbls maple syrup ▶ 1 tsp vanilla extract ▶ pinch of salt For the raspberry filling: ▶ 1 1/2 cups roasted cashews, soaked for 1 hour ▶ 3/4 cup coconut oil ▶ 1/4 cup coconut cream ▶ 1/2 cup maple syrup ▶ 3 cups resh raspberries ▶ 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice ▶ 2 tsp vanilla extract

Method

1. Line a muffin pan with 12 muffin liners. Prepare the crust. Heat a pan over medium-high heat and add the coconut. Stir frequently until nicely toasted.

2. Pour the coconut into a small bowl and let cool for about 5 minutes. Place all the crust ingredients in a high-powered blender and process at low speed until the mixture starts to clump together.

3. Divide the mixture between the liners and use your fingers to press the mixture firmly over the bottom of the liners. Place the pan in the refrigerator.

4. In a medium saucepan or pot, mix all the filling ingredients together and warm them over low heat just until they’re slightly warm and the coconut cream and oil are melted.

5. Pour the filling mixture in the blender. Blend for about 30-60 seconds at high speed until totally smooth.

6. Pour about 1/4 cup of filling over each crust. Pour the remaining filling in the ramekins or another kind of dish.

7. Refrigerate for about 6 hours or until firm. If you’re in a hurry, place the pan in the freezer.

SPORT Malanda Bullride off in 2020 AFTER much deliberation and consultation the Malanda Bull Ride Committee has decided to cancel their 2020 bull ride.

The decision came after a committee meeting was held last week where it was decided to cancel the event due to the rapidly changing COVID-19 situation.

The event was scheduled to be held on October 10 on this year which has now been cancelled with the next bull ride taking place in 2021.

A statement released to The Express stated, “We have a responsibility to all stakeholders and the community and with the rapidly changing COVID-19 situation we felt this was the most appropriate decision.”

MAREEBA team – Are We There Yet – are attempting their second Cardiac Challenge in an effort to raise money for the North Queensland Hospital

Foundation.

The race takes place from Cairns to Cooktown in a massive 250km endurance race starting on September 19 to 21.

The new Are We There Yet team boasts some returning riders and three medical students who are going to be riding in their first cardiac challenge.

This year’s race however will be operating at a lower capacity to better satisfy the Queensland Governments social distancing requirements.

The number of riders has been limited to 150 while the supporters and volunteer’s numbers will also be monitored and capped.

The ladies feel that they will be “ahead of the game” with their training and preparation commencing much earlier than last year.

“We’re excited that the event is going ahead this year,” Team Captain Pam Lavers said.

“Our training is a lot better this year.

“It’s challenging but it’s such a worthwhile challenge.”

The fundraising goal has also changed this year due to the lower number of riders with the goal now being $175,000, which is half the normal goal.

As of print (Monday, August 3) the Cardiac Challenge has raised 37% of their goal with just 47 days until the ride and Are We There Yet Team Captain Pam Lavers is the second highest individual donor with $4,700 closely behind first place with $4,954.

Speedway’s first meet of 2020 RACING: 2019 Australia Fomula 3 Champion and Mareeba local John Magro will be back behind the driver seat at his old stomping grounds at the Mareeba Speedways first meet back postcovid on August 8.

PETROLHEADS will be able to get their racing fix after the Mareeba Speedway announced their first meet back post Covid with national Championship driver and Mareeba local John Magro in the starting lineup.

The meet will take place on Saturday, August 8 and will feature drivers from across the region coming to the Mareeba Speedway to get some high octane action.

The last meet took place

in October last year while the 2020 season was due to start in March, but was postponed.

The Mareeba Speedway will be able to claim the honour of being the first speedway in Queensland to run an event in

2020 since COVID-19.

Mareeba Speedway Secretary Sheree Tichborne is very excited for the upcoming meet and so are many of the drivers who will be travelling from all over Queensland.

“We have had so much interest in racing is it not even funny,” she said.

“We’ve got drivers from Rockhampton and Mackey wanting to travel up for this event.

“Our local drivers are chomping at the bit; I don’t think I’ve ever seen them so keen to hit a race track.”

With the delayed start to the season the committee is now looking at possibly running the season through Christmas to give the drivers more time on the track.

Division nominations for the race meet have been through the roof with some divisions garnering double their normal numbers.

“We’ve set out a quite extensive COVID-19 safety plan as it not only has to go through the Queensland Government but our national body as well,” said Ms Tichborne.

“We definitely are employing all the social distancing requirements and sanitation.

“We’ve got Ash Media coming which is one of the biggest racing media companies around; they are flying up from Brisbane.”

Any eager spectators looking to get up close and personal with the drivers will now have to ap-

ply online for their pit passes by going to the Speedway Australia website.

Australian Formula 3 2019 Champion and Mareeba local John Magro will be stretching his legs on the track for the meet participating in the Formula 500 division.

Mr Magro is excited to be returning to his old stomping grounds after his last race at the speedway in the early 2000’s.

“I started dabbling in a bit more speedway stuff last year as something to do locally,” he said.

“The Mareeba Speedway is where it all started for me when I was 16.

“Racing on the speedway is something I will have to readapt to.”

With his now many years of experience on Formula 3 circuits Mr Magro isn’t counting his chickens yet as racing on the dirt track is “sharp and fast”, different than the circuits he’s grown accustomed too.

“I’ve got a lot of experience racing on dirt but just the different schedule for the meetings I’m not used to it,” he said.

“Now everything is bang in one night so adapting to that sort of thing will be challenging.

“It’ll all be fine, I’ll just send it really.”

Junior league back on the field MAREEBA Junior Rugby League (MJRL) players were excited to get back out on the field and playing after their return to training two weeks ago.

The junior league season was put on hold earlier in the year like many other sports due to COVID-19 but now with the green light from the Queensland Government and the CDJRL training has resumed.

The season has been changed fundamentally however to better allow the players to get as much out of the season as possible, games are not being tracked by scores so the players have as much time on the field as possible without being placed in ladder positions.

The MJRL has received tremendous amounts of support from all their players, parents and sponsors ahead of their 2020 season.

MJRL President Shaun Fincham is excited to see all the kids back out on the field and getting some playing time in.

“For the most part numbers have been pretty good the kids seem really motivated,” he said.

“The kids are all happy to be here, they all just want to play.

“We’re so lucky we have such a good committee and it has been all hands on deck to get it all up and running.”

The majority of the 2020 basketball season had already passed with them only getting in a few games before everything

was shut down due to COVID-19.

Even though the 2020 season is cancelled Mr Wuth assures players that the committee is “very keen to get back up and running as soon as we can.”

“The intention is that we will be kicking off as we normally do around the February period,” he said.

“That will depend on what is happening at the time as well.

“The committee will continue to meet over this period and we will look at the new season.”

THE Mareeba United football club travelled to Stratford on the weekend and brought home some impressive results.

The ladies premier team clearly signalled their intensions this year with a thumping 9-0 win over the Dolphins and at this early stage sit at the summit of the table.

Vicki Owokran managed to bag five goals while Jeannae Kalinau also secured a hat trick with Samantha Cater rounding off a masterclass performance.

The Men’s premiers picked up their first win of the season with a return to form performance to get their season back on track after just one point from their first three games.

half didn’t go to plan as the Dolphins went ahead after being awarded a penalty which was taken well by Joe Rusch.

The Bulls bounced back when Dylan Cummings struck a thunderbolt with his less favoured left foot to equal the score. Darcy McCormack put the bulls in front but Stratford equalised soon after to set up a tantalising half hour which saw the bulls come to life.

Wayne Srhoj lobbed former Mareeba keeper Ronnie Leporati with a delicate header to put the bulls ahead and Darcy McCormack sealed the win with a glancing header as the bulls pick up a much needed 4-2 win.

Coach Ange Tatti said, “We really needed this win to get our

season back on track, the boys put in an excellent performance but we need to keep up these types of performances against the better teams.”

In other results Mareeba Youth had a hiccup against Stratford playing out a 1-1 draw, the men’s premier reserves had a 4-0 win over the Dolphins. The ladies reserves trounced Marlin Coast Rangers 6-0 while Remo Terranova’s under 15 to 17 played out a 3-3 draw.

On Friday night the Bulls second division defeated Leichhardt 3-2 while the third division got hammered 7-0.

This weekend the Bulls are at home on Sunday to Marlin Coast rangers.
