AN Atherton school student is looking at a bright future after being announced as the regional apprentice of the year at the recent Queensland Training Awards.

Bryce Cummings from Atherton State High School has been completing his year 12 studies three days a week while at the same time working as an electrical apprentice two days a week with Jason Cummings Electrical Service (JCES) in Atherton.

On September 11, Bryce was named the regional winner

for the School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the year at the Queensland Training awards.

“Kylie Coleman, the VET co-ordinator at Atherton High school suggested I nominate for the Queensland Training Awards,” Bryce said.

“From there I was nominated in the top five in the Far North region and then I found out I was the overall winner for the region and now I move up into the state training awards.”

Bryce, who will finish school in a few weeks, said it’s a relief to know that he is going straight

into employment after school during these uncertain times.

“When I graduate I will already be equivalent to a second year apprentice,” he said.

“When I found out that I could be a school based apprentice, I thought it was great getting the best of both worlds as I could get a head start on my career.

“I did work experience in a few different industries and through a matter of elimination I worked out what sort of work I wanted to do.

“I decided that I wanted to be

an electrician because I love the type of work we do and I love the scope of the work that I get to experience.”

Bryce’s supervisor at JCES, Blaire Duesbury said that Bryce was an asset to the company.

“He came in and did some work experience with us and then joined us during his school holidays and then he decided that he wanted to do a school based apprenticeship,” said Mr Duesbury.

“He is always keen and eager to learn and lend a hand – he is very handy to have around.”

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman said while this year’s event was unlike past celebrations, it continued to recognise the highest achieving individuals, organisations and projects in Queensland’s training system.

“These awards shine a spotlight on our top achievers in training from across the state and it’s fantastic to announce the regional winners in the Queensland Training Awards,” Ms Fentiman said.

“I congratulate our winners and finalists from more than 700 nominations across a broad range of skills and industries from seven Queensland regions.

“And all of them play an important role in ensuring we have the skilled workforce needed for the jobs now and into the future.”

Bat Hospital’s big win A SMALL but important facility for bats and flying foxes has been voted not only as the number one tourist attraction in Atherton, but also in the top 10 per cent of attractions in the world according to Trip Advisor.

According to the world’s biggest travel and ratings site, “Reviews from millions of Tripadvisor travellers place this (The Tolga bat Hospital) attraction in the top 10% worldwide.”

Director of the Tolga Bat hospital Jennefer Mclean said the high rating was due to the ability of visitors to get up close with a number of different bat and flying fox species.

“Visitors can get up close to the bats when they are feeding, it gives them a personal experience and an emotional bond between the person and the animal,” she said Jennefer said the hospital has about 6 different types bats and flying foxes and about 5 different types of micro bats in display.

“All the bats are different to each other, they eat different food and they have distinct personalities,” she said.

“We are only open from 3-6pm because that is when the bats come down to feed, when you get up close you can appreciate their different characteristics.

“We are one of the only places in the world where you can meet so many different

Ms Mclean said due to COVID restrictions, tour numbers had been reduced to only about 6 people per tour.

“Our numbers are down due to Covid and social distancing, which means we are getting less people through the gate,

but it means visitors are getting a more personable and quality experience,” she said.

“After people have visited they also feel more educated about bats and their habitats.”

THE Mareeba Hospital has finally completed its $5 million investment in the Medical Imaging Department which now includes a brand new CT scanner.

The newly refurbished department was opened last Monday and not only includes the new CT scanner but a fully digital X-ray machine and dental X-ray machine.

The new X-ray machine is one of only three fully digital X-ray’s within the Cairns and Hinterlands Hospital Services area, Mareeba has even beaten out Cairns on this development.

The upgrade also houses a new ultrasound area and beds for patients to be cared for before and after the relevant scans in the Medical Imaging Department.

Mareeba Hospital Facility Manager and Director or Nursing and Midwifery Ross Clarksmith said the CT scanner uses X-rays and a computer to diagnose illness and injury.

“It’s right next to our Mareeba Hospital Emergency Department which is perfect for patients with critical injuries who need to be diagnosed quickly,” he said.

“We have not had the ability to provide CT scans previously and the community will greatly benefit from this new service.

“We will no longer have to send patients to the Cairns or Atherton Hospitals in some diagnostic cases, allowing us to treat local residents closer to home.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui has followed through on

her 2017 election promise by delivering the $5 million upgrade to the Mareeba Hospital.

“This is such a great day for the Mareeba community it has been such a long journey for us to get to this point,” she said.

“We had to ensure that we had the right machine for the job and that we had all the right spaces around it to make sure patients are safe and comfortable.

“It’s exciting to be here knowing that we can now keep the patients who need a CT scan, local.”

After being opened on Monday the CT scanner was already securing bookings and scanning patients just after lunchtime on the opening.

$3 billion for Queensland agriculture and mining QUEENSLAND’S hardworking agricultural and resource sectors will now be eligible to dig into the government’s $3 billion stimulus package.

Queensland State Treasurer Cameron Dick announced last fortnight that these Queensland sectors were eligible for support through the package.

He also announced that the government would be looking to ‘facilitate’ investments in hard, economic-enabling, water and

road infrastructure, ports and digital and direct investments in agriculture.

“Unlike economies in New South Wales and Victoria, which are highly dependent on service industries, we of course have two of the great mainstays of the Queensland economy – agriculture and mining,” Treasurer Dick said.

“They have done much of the heavy lifting, so yes we will look to support that.

“There will be a combination of investments we will make, not just in supporting agriculture but supporting those parts of the economy that facilitate and assist agricultural producers.

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said that any funds going to mining and agriculture is welcome “We are seeking further details from the department on accessibility to farmers,” he said.

CLEALL’S BUTCHERY Building work is still continuing on the John Doyle Bridge in Mareeba with a new anticipated re-opening date of mid-November.

AT last week’s Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) monthly meeting, council was updated on a number of projects across the Shire including the delay of opening the John Doyle Bridge on Anzac Avenue.

MSC Mayor Anglea Toppin said the delay was caused by unforeseeable building problems.

“As opposed to a greenfield site where you are starting from

scratch, when faced with a refurbishment project such as this, you inevitably encounter unexpected elements,” Mayor Toppin said.

“As expected, when working on an old bridge, a number of decisions were only able to be made when the existing superstructure was removed and exposed the concrete elements.

“Once this had been done it

was then revealed that additional works were required to accommodate the new girders and concrete deck.”

According to the MSC, they have now reached a pure re-build stage with the new concrete deck being poured in stages.

“There has been a minimal increase to the material costs. The budget was adjusted accordingly to accommodate the extra costs.

The funds have been sourced from savings from other Council projects,” Cr Toppin said.

“The project has been a massive undertaking by Council and I thank the community for its continued cooperation and patience,” Council anticipates that the bridge will now re-open to traffic in mid-November, weather permitting.

Projects on the go A NUMBER of projects across the Mareeba Shire have commenced over the past few months.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said projects across the Shire are enhancing the liveability for all residents.

“Council’s main focus is to continue maintaining and upgrading essential infrastructure while identifying opportunities to enhance our Shire for all residents and visitors,” Cr Toppin said.

“By continuing to deliver our capital works program, in spite of COVID, we are creating and supporting employment, not only for Council’s workforce but for contractors and local sub-contractors alike.

“The Barron Falls Walking

Trail Project is progressing well and is on track to be completed by the end of the year.

“The Barron Falls Walking Trail will be a breathtaking experience for locals and tourists to explore world heritage rainforest,” Mayor Toppin said.

The new walking trail connecting the Kuranda township with the Barron Falls lookout will offer visitors to Kuranda a link between Jum Rum Creek Conservation Park and the Barron Gorge National Park, alleviating foot traffic on Barron Falls Road.

Stage two of the Byrnes Street Beautification Project is complete and included the removal of vegetation, repairing isolated pavement defects, renewing the existing asphalt

surfacing and constructing new garden islands which were planted with trees to match the streetscape on the western side.

“The project was completed ahead of schedule and we have received positive comments from business owners and the community,” Mayor Toppin said.

“Council has started work on the widening of Chewko Road in Mareeba and the water main upgrade on Rob Veivers Upgrade in Kuranda,” Mayor Toppin said.

“We look forward to seeing many more projects happening around the Shire as we progress with our capital works program.”

MSC updates disaster plan MAREEBA Shire Council recently adopted an updated Local Disaster Management Plan, providing a comprehensive framework for a multiagency response and recovery operation in times of disaster.

The Plan is an overarching document that details the structure, management arrangements and governance in terms of preparing for, responding to and recovering from a disaster.

Mareeba Shire Mayor and Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group Councillor Angela Toppin said “the plan is designed to be flexible so it can be adapted to any disaster event

affecting the region to ensure an integrated, coordinated and timely response.”

“This is a dynamic document that is regularly reviewed and kept current, in line with any changes in legislation and reflect learnings from significant events within Australia or elsewhere,” she said.

The Bureau of Meteorology advising of a La Niña weather alert, increasing the potential for an above-average cyclone season, Mayor Toppin is encouraging residents to ensure they have an emergency plan in place for any potential disaster or serious events.

“Our region is prone to cyclones, floods and bushfires, and our community is very strong and resilient, however we must not be complacent,” Mayor Toppin said.

“Community safety is everyone’s responsibility and we all have a part to play when it comes to disaster preparedness.

“I ask that all residents do their part and develop their own emergency plan so that you and your family are prepared for a disaster or emergency situation,” she said.

Cook Shire community consultation THE Cook Shire Council has called out to the community to contribute towards the Cook Shire Council Community Plan.

A series of face-to-face events and opportunities are being held across the shire until the end of the year where community members can have their say.

The launch of the Council’s comprehensive community consultation process was launched last Monday which included a variety of other feedback forms,

opportunities and channels.

Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott is excited to get out and about to have these face to face talks with the members of his council area.

“These next few months of events and engagements give our councillors the opportunity to explore the aspirations of the community,” he said.

This allows the councillors to understand how the community wants Cook Shire to look and

feel over the next decade.

The Community plan is a ten year, high level plan for Cook Shire that identifies community needs and articulates the Council’s and community’s long term visions, aspirations and priorities.

There were six community consultations held over the course of last week with many more to be announced before the end of the year.

Leaders show of support for LNP’S Cook candidate

LNP Party faithfuls came together on Tuesday, September 15 at the Mareeba Sales Yards for the official launch of Edward ‘Nipper’ Browns campaign for Cook ahead of the upcoming state election.

In attendance was Federal Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch, Queensland Senator Susan McDonald, former Member for Cook David Kempton and former Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore.

Nipper said that even though he had worked as a Mareeba Shire Councillor for two terms he acknowledged that council was very different to the cut and thrust of State Parliament but the need to influence decisions for the community's benefit was still the same.

“I've never been one to shy away from doing what's right for Mareeba and I know I can do the same for the electorate of Cook,” he said.

“I've travelled all through Cape York, I know what we need and I know how to fight for it.

“It's crucial that for regional Queensland to regain relevance

at State level, we change the government and to do that, I will work extremely hard to win voters' trust before the October 31 election.”

Nipper said his council experience had primed him to be across all the issues across the diverse electorate.

“Mareeba is a business and farming hub that is the gateway to the Cape, you then have tourism and environmental issues in Port Douglas and Mossman, plus the needs of indigenous communities further north,” he said.

“I have experienced dealing with all these subjects, speaking to people from all backgrounds and I have no qualms about dealing with Ministers in Brisbane.

“I share people's disappointment at the neglect Cook has suffered under Labor and our ineffective Labor Member.”

Nipper said one of his first acts, should he be elected, would be to reopen an electorate office in Mareeba.

“Many people were upset when our Labor Member chose to base her office in Cairns and that's something I will change if

I'm successful,” he said.

“I will use my own money to open an office within two weeks back in Mareeba if I’m elected.”

Senator Susan McDonald said the people of Cook had a golden opportunity to elect a tried and true champion of the Far North.

“Nipper wears his heart on his sleeve, he's a family man, a community servant and his knowledge of public office and getting things done would be invaluable for everyone in Cook,” she said.

“The next term of Government is four years, and people have to ask if they can afford another four years of Labor.

“We've got the lowest business confidence, we're billions behind in regional roads spending and Queensland is the only state in Australia not to hand down a budget this year.

“To change Queensland's fortunes, we need to change the Government, and to do that, we need to elect people like Nipper.”

Kuranda man has charges dismissed for killing dog Kirstee Lee Mazlin, Goji the Staffi and a friend’s child in happier days.

A KURANDA man who appeared in Mareeba Magistrates Court on Thursday September 10 facing charges of Injuring an Animal has had his charges dropped after the magistrate found the defendant was of un-

sound mind by reason of insanity.

On June 6 2019 John Graham Smith, 75, made a phone call to police admitting that he had tied his neighbour’s dog to his back deck.

During proceedings the Triple-0 call was played to the court, where Mr Smith said he was “fed up” with the dog being on his property and that he had made numerous complaints against the animal to police and local council.

He told the emergency operator he found “a good strong length of rope, formed a noose” and “put it around the dog’s neck,” he said “I hoisted it up using my handrail on my deck, its feet are off the ground, and it seemed to have a little trouble breathing apparently.”

When the operator asked if he had just “hung the neighbour’s dog” the man confirmed that was correct.

Mr Smith told the court that, that when he tied the dog to the handrail it jumped up aggressively with its front paws trying to climb up onto the wire lengths forming the balustrade and its back paws were on the wood section of the deck.

Disturbing police vest cam footage was shown in the court of a dog hanging by a rope from the back of a patio at a Kuranda property. A piece of rope was allegedly tied around its neck and its back paws were hanging of the ground. When officers asked Mr Smith if the dog was dead he replied “it was just sleeping” The two year old staffi named

Gogi belonged to neighbour Zacary and Kirstee Lee Mazlin.

Mr Smith told the court that he had no intention of killing the dog and pleaded not guilty claiming he was of unsound mind at the time.

Mr Smith’s defence brought up that their defendant had been suffering from depression, had multiple health issues and was taking a number of medications at the time.

Heggie, handed down his findings on Tuesday September 15 in the Mareeba Magistrates Court dismissing the charge by finding the defendant was of unsound mind at the time under section 172 of the Mental Health Act. “Mr Smith did not have the capacity to know what he was doing at the time, or the capacity to control his actions at the time, by reason of psychiatric disorders,” Acting Magistrate

Heggie said.

The magistrate also requested that Mr Smith receive further psychological help, dependent on medical documents and reports to be handed in at a later date.

Gogi’s owner Mr Mazlin said he was now building a new house on his parent’s land at Koah so they could leave Kuranda and not have to run into Mr Smith in the street that they shared.

Teacher’s giving spirit shines A LOCAL teacher has been recognised for her selfless and outstanding contribution to Catholic school education after

the Catholic Education Week Awards were held last fortnight.

Madonna Lawrence has been a teacher at St Joseph’s Parish

School for more than 10 years and was awarded for her contribution with one of eight Spirit of Catholic Education Awards state wide.

The Atherton Maize Festival and the St Joseph’s Debutante Ball are just some of the events that she is involved in outside of school hours, while during school hours she can often be found running St Joseph’s Mini Vinnies program.

The Mini Vinnies program is commonplace in catholic primary schools around Australia but what sets Mrs Lawrence’s program apart is that whole classes regularly become involved in her program.

When she found out that she had been nominated for the

award and then successful in winning she was humbled by the recognition.

“It was a very humbling surprise when I found out I had won,” she said.

“How much you touch people’s lives without even realising it, it might just be running into a child uptown and they will run up and have a talk with you talking about a memory when they were in prep, and now they’re graduating.

“You don’t realise what an impact you can have on somebodies life.”

Mrs Lawrence has even taken her job a step further and taken the lead on Trauma Informed Learning at her school, acting as a mentor for other teachers and

leadership.

In her current role as the Social and Emotional Learning Co-ordinator Mrs Lawrence not only helps guide her students through learning but also through their own emotions.

“If we want people to step up and do things then we have to lead the way and model it to them, we have to show them that there is a way of serving others in your community and giving back to your community,” she said.

“We need to model that earlier rather than later and get children involved In those sorts of things and seeing the rewards of being a service to their communities.

“So when they move into

their adult life they would chose to rather be active than inactive.”

St Joseph’s Parish School Principal Donna Maxsted said that Mrs Lawrence often goes above and beyond her normal duties as a teacher.

“Madonna’s work with students who have high needs in social emotional learning is excellent,” she said.

“She is a very giving and caring person which is reflected in the work that she does with Mini Vinnies.

“Madonna has a particular flair and capacity for giving to others she loves the children and they often look to emulate her in that capacity of giving.”

Virtual Melbourne Cup tour set for Mareeba

CUP TOUR: The Melbourne Cup will be making a virtual tour of Mareeba with a special function being held at the Mareeba Leagues Club on Friday.

THE Mareeba Turf Club will host a Melbourne Cup Virtual Tour this Friday, September 25 at the Mareeba Leagues Club.

Due to COVID-19 the physical Melbourne Cup is unable to grace the region and so a virtual tour via the big screen has been organised to celebrate the spring racing season.

The Virtual Tour will contain the running of past Melbourne cups, interviews with jockeys, trainers and race horse owners of the great race.

Rhonda Stevens, Secretary of the Mareeba Turf Club, is encouraging locals to attend and get into the Melbourne Cup spirit.

“We’re having fashions on the field on the day just to make it a bit more festive,” she said.

When applying to have the tour come to Mareeba, The Mareeba Turf Club had to nominate a charity which would benefit from the $50,000 prize being offered by the Victoria Racing Club.

The Friends of The Mareeba Hospital Foundation were the local charity nominated and will be drawn a barrier position on Melbourne Cup race day.

If the horse from their barrier wins, the Friends of the Mareeba Hospital Foundation will be awarded $50,000.

The virtual tour will begin at 11.30am followed by lunch. To book or for further information call the Mareeba Leagues Club on 4092 2922.

Mareeba tops the list for liveability MAREEBA is lifting the lid on what makes it such a special place to live.

Joe Moro, president of the town’s chamber of commerce, said amongst the challenges presented by the COVID-19 health pandemic, Mareeba continued to shine.

Mr Moro said there were a number of elements that, when

“Great location, lots of services and beautiful year-round weather are what makes Mareeba so liveable,” he said.

“Mareeba has those three ingredients – and more – in bucket loads, making it the ideal location to raise a family, set up a new business and forge a life.

“Our retail and business sectors are bustling, with two supermarkets and speciality shops galore and entertainment

needs,” Mr Moro said.

“Our industrial area is booming – evidenced by the growing number of tenants in the town’s industrial area, which is purpose-fit to accommodate a range of different industries.

“Transport operators are expanding at record rates to keep up with demand.”

Growth in the horticulture industries of Mareeba, and areas immediately west and north, continues at exponential rates.

Demand for labour is high, buoyed by the growth in agriculture.

Mr Moro said the chamber was working hard to continue to strengthen the local economy, and position Mareeba as a strong retail, industrial, tourism and agriculture centre.

“Two years ago we won the mantle as the largest urban centre in tropical North Queensland outside Cairns (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 Census data),” he said.

“We will continue to work hard to defend that title.”

Students art on display MAREEBA State School (MSS) opened their annual arts showcase last Monday, decorating their school library with art pieces from every grade in the school.

The showcase is held every year with each year having a different theme; this year’s theme was ‘change’.

Students worked hard to present their art pieces to their friends, family and members of the public when the showcase was opened.

Creativity and talent was on display at Mareeba State School’s art show last week which was officially opened by Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin.

New Dimbulah mural paints picture of culture A NEW mural at the Dimbulah Community Centre is getting its final touches this week by a local artist.

The Dimbulah Community Centre was awarded a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Community Grant for an Aboriginal cultural heritage mural to be painted on the amenities block in the Dimbulah Memorial Park to raise awareness of the cultural heritage of the Bar-Barrum People.

Manager of The Dimbulah Community Centre Grace Armenti said the idea came from not having anything that represented the local aboriginal culture from the Dimbulah region.

“We wanted to educate residents about local Aboriginal

culture as well as making a tourist attraction for visitors as well,” said Mrs Armenti.

The mural is being painted by local Bar-Barrum artist, Deon Wason and tells the story of Bar-Barrum country and culture.

The mural includes aspects of men’s business and ceremony, hunting and communication tools and instruments and sacred animals.

Deon also designed the mural. He submitted a sketch that was approved by the Mareeba Shire Council and painting got underway about two weeks ago and is due to finish this week depending on the weather.

“We do hope that this will stop local kids just doing mindless graffiti on the building,” Grace said.

“There is a hand print of an elder on the mural as well as the handprint of the youngest member of the tribe.”

Grace also said that they are now looking at stage 2 of the mural.

“Feedback from the community has been positive so we are now discussing what we would like to do on the other side of the building,” she said.

“We are now taking ideas on what the local community would like to see done, ideas and thoughts are always welcome.”

THE Old Post Office Gallery in Atherton has a new exhibition opening on September 30.

Titled “From the Printroom”, The Tableland Region Art Society printing group (TRASinkers) will be showcasing an array of works and print techniques such as chine collie, key block cuts, reduction lino cuts, monoprints, stencil and hand printing on fabric.

Marion Clarkson who is the President of the Tablelands Region Art society said that there will be 13 artists exhibiting their print works.

“All the artists are from the Tablelands and most of the prints will be for sale,” she said.

“Unfortunately due to CovHelen Hume, Graeme Draper, Rob Mian and Arthur Nash at work id we can’t have an official opening party or ceremony.” in the art society’s print room.

The group of printers benefitted from a Community Gambling Fund Grant last year which enabled the refurbishment of the Art Society’s print room at the Old Primary School Community Centre as well as the presentation of workshops on drypoint and mokulito techniques.

The gallery is open to the public every Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm and entry is free.

Despite Covid, the group still holds workshops and members continue to develop their skills with the support of experienced printer Maryke Dobe, the Print Room Coordinator.

Youngsters show acts of mercy

LAST Friday students at St Thomas’ School in Mareeba celebrated Mercy Day by dishing out acts of kindness and mercy.

Mercy Day seeks to remember and honour the work of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy.

The students carried out acts

of mercy by doing selfless things for both their school and the community. They cleaned the school, prepared care packages for Rosies to deliver, they made bookmarks for Vinnies customers and even made get well cards for patients at the Mareeba Hospital.

St Thomas’ Assistant Principal Katrina Miller said that Mercy Day not only provides the students with ways to give back, but benefits the wider community.

HINCHINBROOK MP Nick Dametto is claiming that a 25 per cent reduction in State Government water tariffs for farmers could boost Queensland’s economy by as much as $220 million over the next four years.

Mr Dametto said while Labor was preoccupied with Queensland hosting the AFL Grand Final, the benefits of such an event were “shortsighted” when compared to shoring up the state’s long-term agricultural future.

“It’s estimated Queensland hosting the AFL Grand Final will generate 80 jobs and a $17 million boost to our economy,” he said “But figures from an Australian Sugar Milling Council (ASMC) report suggest a 25 per cent reduction in State Government irrigated water tariffs could add up to $220 million to Queensland’s economy and support thousands of jobs in the regions over the next four years – the equivalent of 11 AFL grand finals.”

KAP leader and Traeger MP Robbie Katter challenged the Premier to demonstrate she was serious about post-COVID economic recovery.

“Does the Premier want to provide real economic recovery solutions to Queensland,

as has been demonstrated by this study from ASMC, or does she just want to keep waving a shiny bauball in the major centres?,” he said.

“The grand final just further demonstrates that the Premier and her government are quite willing to turn their back on Queensland by spending taxpayers money to buy their way to another election.”

Mr Katter said agriculture and mining would continue to prop Queensland’s economy up but it could not afford to continue being constrained by high water prices.

“I can assure you the government won’t be following our advice on this, it’ll be something that the KAP will have to drag them to the table on, kicking and screaming,” he said.

“There’s no question that LNP and Labor will be chasing votes in the south-east corner to win this election and that will come at the expense of the greater Queensland economy.”

Australian Sugar Milling Council (ASMC) chief executive David Pietsch said agriculture could help steer Queensland on the road to recovery, but Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's focus on job creation could not be achieved without affordable water prices.

An ASMC report delivered in April showed that a 25pc reduction in the price of irrigated water could deliver up to $220 million in additional economic activity. The additional revenue would also assist mill viability, hampered by current low sugar prices.

Irrigation water prices have increased 4pc a year on average for the past 20 years.

Mr Pietsch said while the Palaszczuk government had frozen irrigation water prices for 12 months and dam upgrade costs for four years, more needed to be done.

“We can help Queensland back on the road to recovery and support the Premier’s focus on job creation, but not without a reduction in water pricing levels.”

AS my partner and I ride motorcycles of various types and sizes and in recognition to all those that ride, especially those whom have lost their lives riding the Gillies Range.

It was my partner Cath and myself who have fixed a yellow motorcycle sprocket to the rock wall on the way down.

In 1900 the State of Australia created The Commonwealth of Australia, and adopted a constitution, which contained section 92 that provides for the “Freedom of trade, commerce and intercourse” among the States.

It seems to me that the border closures being perpetrated on the people of Australia by the States is clearly against section 92 of our con-

stitution. The border closures are wreaking havoc with our economy, and yet no one has said a word about it. I thought the States has a responsibility to obey our Constitution and I also thought that to go against it would be a crime.

Why hasn’t the GovernorGeneral taken action to make the States comply with the law?

I would like the bush lawyers out there to give their opinion as to whether the State Police Forces in obeying the State Governments, are actually breaking the law stipulated in section 92 of our constitution. Our economy has suffered the worst shock since the great depression.

The recent action by the QLD Government, where a Queenslander had to go to Sydney for brain surgery and was then refused permission to return to her home is un-Australian and the people responsible for this action should be condemned.

The tourist and hospitality industries have been devastated by the present policies and Australians running this country need a huge dose of common sense, we should not have allowed a virus to destroy our economy.

Method 1. Set aside 50g each of the peanut butter and chocolate. Heat oven to 180C and line a 20cm square baking tin with baking parchment. Turn off heat and use a wooden spoon to beat in the eggs one by one. Stir in the flour and scrape into the tin.

2. Melt reserved peanut butter in the microwave on high for 45 secs, or in a pan, until runny, then drizzle over the brownie.

3. Bake for 20-25 mins until it has a crust, but the middle still seems slightly uncooked.

4. Melt reserved chocolate, drizzle over the brownie, then cool in the tin before cutting into squares.

Patient completes challenge

From being a cardiac patient to raising funds to cardiac services, Mike Valle joined hundreds of other riders participating in this year’s Cardiac Challenge held over the weekend.

RIDERS of all ages and abilities came together over the weekend for the 2020 Cardiac Challenge, with one local rider being a cardiac patient himself.

At the relatively young age of 44, Mike Valle was doing a regular mountain bike ride around Atherton in 2019 when he began

to feel a tightness in his chest.

A doctor friend suggested he get it checked out and an angiogram in Cairns Hospital discovered multiple blockages in his cardiac arteries.

This resulted in a series of stents being inserted to open them up, and on his way into the

theatre Mr Valle got an idea.

“It was when they wheeled me into the theatre that they took me past the big Cardiac Challenge sign and I said to the nurse – when I am better, I am going to do that,” he said.

Do that he did as he signed up to ride in the 2020 QSuper Cardi-

ac Challenge helping to fundraise for the service that saved his life.

“It’s my own little way of giving back to the hospital that helped me and gave me a second chance in life,” Mr Valle said.

Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation Fundraising and Marketing Manager Glenys Duncombe said this year’s event would be slightly different to previous years, but passionate fundraisers were working hard towards their goal.

“With the logistical challenges we’ve faced this year due to COVID-19, having QSuper as our major sponsor is a critical component and it will enable every single dollar raised to go directly to cardiac care in the Far North,” she said.

“There’s been a lot more work in organising this year’s event, but when you hear stories like Mike’s, you know it’s all worthwhile to make a difference to patient outcomes.”

The 2020 QSuper Cardiac Challenge smashed their $240,000 goal with them raising over $270,000 for cardiac services in the region.

The Cardiac Challenge riders enjoyed a stop at Rotary Park in Mareeba on Saturday where they enjoyed refreshments by Mareeba Rotary.

Survivor Golf king and queen of the north finals THIS Saturday the Survivor Golf Series will see some of the regions keenest amateur golfers tee off at the Atherton Golf Club for the finals of the King and Queen of the North Match Play Event.

The semi-finals are scheduled to tee off from 6.44am and the Men’s and Ladies finals are scheduled to tee off at 11.40am and 11.48am respectively.

The Survivor Golf Series is all about giving amateur golfers the feeling of participating in a professional tournament.

With the obstacles coronavirus has thrown community sport across the country, the Survivor Golf series this year pivoted from a traditional stroke play format with high energy crowds, to a handicapped match play event, seeing two players at a time go head-to-head with highlights broadcast online.

The King and Queen of the North features equal prize money for men and women. Survivor Golf in partnership with Drummond Golf will present the winners with a $1000 Drummond Golf gift voucher and second place will receive a $300 Drummond Golf gift voucher.

Bulls on track for finals THE Mareeba United Football Club played host to the Stratford Dolphins last Sunday hoping to get a season double over their arch rival.

In round 4 the Bulls managed a 4-2 away win over the Dolphins and Coach Ang Tatti was counting on the teams recent performances to bring home the bacon.

Comfortably 2-0 up at half time the Bulls then did what they seem to do virtually every game and that is to lose concentration

and allow the opposing team back into the match.

This week was no different as Stratford mounted a comeback to level the score at 2-2 after McCormack and Fono had put them ahead at the break.

It took a special effort by Damian Avolio who struck a screamer from outside the box to give the Bulls all three points.

In other matches on Sunday The Men’s Reserves played out a 3-3 draw much to the disappoint-

ment of the Coach Dennis Allen, the point virtually secures the Premiership.

Bryce Cummings scored a brace in the youth game to bring the young Bulls equal top of the ladder.

The Ladies Premiers had a field day with a thumping 11-0 win over Stratford with Vicki Owokran getting a hat trick and the rest scored throughout the team.

The Ladies Reserves had a

4-0 win over Marlin Coast Rangers with Soncin (2), Poilapa and Simonato’ getting on the score sheet.

The Bulls Colts had a 6-0 win over Stratford while the Men’s Second Division won 2-0 over the Comets and the Men’s Third Division managed a 4-4- draw also against the Comets.

The Bulls have a bye next week as they gear up for the final two games of the season before the final series.

Record breaking event SPEEDWAY action returned to Mareeba Speedway on Saturday night in a big way.

With Covid restrictions still affecting speedways in Southern Queensland, drivers from across the state were racing to Mareeba to get onto the starting line.

Two North Queensland Titles were conducted with local Matty Smith taking

out the Modified Sedan title, Brisbane's Darran Lester second and Mackay's Brodie Boss third.

It was Matty Fleming from Townsville who romped home with the Formula 500 title with young Cairns driver Tessa Underwood in second and Mareeba's John Magro a close third.

Speedway Tim Smith said “The 1200 people crowd, the huge fields, the racing and the atmosphere were beyond our expectations, I had to go back into town for more supplies not once but three times,” he said.

Cup day success THE Atherton Turf Club hosted the Atherton Cup on Saturday with racegoers enjoying a great day on and off the track.

The races were tightly contested giving race fans some action packed fun for their day out.

Kicking off the day of racing was the 1000M Maiden Plate which was a tight finish between first, second and third with the differences in the milliseconds.

First went to Mac Me Mate ridden by Graham Watson followed closely by Millaa Muss ridden by Wanderson D’Avila and Brands Hatch ridden by

Rachel Shred on a 0.8 and a 1.3 margin respectively.

The 1000m Class B Handicap went to The Frontier ridden

by Emily Cass followed by Rachel Shred on Aritomo on a 6.0 margin and Firerise ridden by Wanderson D’Avila a 6.8 margin.

The 1200m Open Handicap was won by Windmill Lane ridden by Kate Southam followed

by Hidden in Heaven ridden by Graham Kliese on a 2.0 margin and third went to Dream I Can ridden by Emily Cass on a 2.3 margin.

The 1400m Benchmark 50 Handicap was another tightly contested race with Clout ridden by Scott Gittos taking first followed by Elite Jet ridden by Frank Edwards on a 0.2 margin then Sweet June ridden by Wanderson D’Avila on a 0.3 margin.

Lastly the 2000m Atherton Cup Open Handicap went to Buxton ridden by Graham Kliese followed by Guangzhou ridden by Marnu Potgieter on a 0.4 margin and Greycliffe ridden by Escott Sheargold following closely on a 0.8 margin.
