Heidi wins AusMumpreneur of the year

The

LOCAL Businesswoman Heidi Jonsson, who founded Norsafe has been named Queensland Regional Business Excellence Award winner in the National AusMumpreneur Awards.

Due to COVID, the awards were streamed on-line and Heidi and her staff, friends and suppliers held a red carpet party in Heidi’s shed to watch the stream.

“I’m really thrilled; I was really excited when they announced my name,” she said “Seeing as we couldn’t be there for the presentation, we decided to have the event in my shed.

“The rules were that we had to wear formal dresses with comfortable shoes, either Blundstone’s or thongs.”

Heidi, who was born in Herberton and raised in Ravenshoe, was working at the Mareeba Sugar mill when she started her business 10 years ago.

Norsafe now employs up to eight people, doing testing and tagging, RCD testing, thermal imaging and appliance repairs.

One of the more unique aspects of her business is that all of Heidi’s staff are female.

Heidi said that her passion for workplace safety stems from the death of her stepbrother on a farm when they were both children as well as the death of Juanita and Ava Bendel who were both electrocuted on a farm at Tumoulin in 2019.

“Test and tag is an opportunity for me to do my bit to prevent workplace deaths and injuries. I want safe farms and safe places for kids to play,” she said “A lot of old buildings in the Far North still have the old ce-

Job vacancies heating up

WITH the weather starting to heat up, local recruiters are now looking for workers for the upcoming mango season.

Due to state borders in lockdown and international travel being nearly non-existent growers and farmers are hoping that unemployed locals will be willing to take up the slack and seek employment on local farms.

General Manager for recruitment agency QITE Jillian Trout said they are now recruiting for packers and pickers for the upcoming mango season.

“We are trying to get people prepared for the upcoming mango season,” she said.

“Tablelands farmers will start their season in November whereas farmers in Bowen and Ayr it will probably start a little bit earlier.

“We are hoping to get on the front foot and start interviewing people to see what skills they have and where they are located.”

Jillian said that previous mango picking experience is not necessary but a good attitude will go a long way. “The farmers do need to be able to understand workplace health and safety, heat exposure and to make sure they are wearing the correct PPE,” she said.

“Ideally some outside work experience would be beneficial.”

It’s not just unemployed adults that QITE are looking at; Jillian said they are also visiting local high schools to gauge the interest of school leavers or seniors interested in working

“As long as they have the right attitude, they can listen and follow instructions and are reliable and willing to work hard they should apply,” Jillian said.

“Seniors and students looking for school holiday or gap year work are more than welcome to apply.”

Despite the backpacker

shortage Jillian said that they are still managing to fill jobs as they come in.

“It’s all about having the right people in the right locations, some farmers want people who are committed to staying on the farm, so that can narrow your pool,” she said.

“We are also looking for other positions to be filled on farms including cleaners, mechanics,

drivers and farm hands.

“Some jobs are more difficult to fill than others; we are always looking for skilled workers such as diesel fitters and tractor drivers, as these jobs need specific qualifications.”

Brenda Gutchen has been working on farms around the Tablelands for the past four years and said she has found farm work through QITE. “I get

work whenever the farms need a hand,” she said.

“I’ve gotten heaps of work on mango and lime farms.

“People who knock back work on farms are just lazy.”

Macka from McCulloch Limes said he prefers to employ locals.

“If you employ locals the money stays in the town,” he said.

“If you employ backpackers you’ve got to teach them and train them every time you get new ones.

“Whereas locals know the system and they know what I expect and most of them have families to support and that makes them more reliable.”

Meet the candidates for Cook The Cook electorate is looking to be hotly contested with six candidates already throwing their hats in the ring WITH the upcoming Queensland state election less than eight weeks away, The Mareeba Chamber of commerce have announced that they will be running a meet the candidates lunch for the seat of Cook.

The event will take place on Tuesday, October 6 at the Mareeba United Football Club from 12noon.

Candidates appearing at the lunch will be Edward ‘Nipper’ Brown from LNP, Brettlyn 'The Beaver' Neal from One Nation, Desmond Tayley from NQ First, Independent candidate Yodie Batzke, Tanika Parker from the Katter Australia Party and incumbent Labor candidate Cynthia Lui. President of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Joe Moro said that’s it’s a great way for constituents to meet their local candidates.

“There are very few opportunities to meet all

the candidates in the same place at the same time,” Mr Moro said.

“It also gives voters the chance to ask some hard questions in an open forum.”

Mr Moro said the event is open to anyone who would like to get to meet their candidates.

“You don’t need to be a member of the Chamber or even a business owner; this event is open to anyone with an interest in state politics and improving our region.”

STATE AWARD: Mary English is the Facility Manager and Nursing Director at OzCare Malanda and is now one of the top nurses in Queensland.

Nurse Mary is best in QLD A NEW state-wide award for nursing has been won by a local nurse who lives and works in Malanda.

Mary English is the Facility Manager and Nursing Director at OzCare Malanda and last week she found that she had won the Excellence in Leadership and Governance Award in the inaugural professional practice awards run by the Queensland Nurses and Midwives Union (QNMU).

“I couldn’t believe it when I found out that I had won,” Mary said.

“I’m very humbled by it and

I’m very pleased for our workplace here in Malanda.

“Everyone here is really proud and it’s a positive shot in the arm for aged care.”

Before becoming the Nursing Director at Ozcare Malanda, Mary was working in emergency departments.

Mary has been the Nursing Director for the past 11 years and was nominated by a colleague who described her as “a role model for all staff and a professional inspiration,” “Mary has greatly raised the profile of nursing in a rural set-

ting, while creating a culture that supports best practice and excellent workplace relations," they said.

The award is decided after a number of interviews and judges then base their decision on the interviews and the application. According to the QNMU “Mary addresses the shortage of clinicians in rural areas by encouraging and supporting professional development and providing opportunities for staff to progress,” they wrote.

“She promotes shared governance and a strong vision for the future by working closely with

all health professionals, and has shown a high level of leadership skills within the workplace through her commitment to the safety of staff and residents at her facility.”

Mary said that one of the most important qualities that an aged care nurse can have is communication.

"The single most valuable thing for this profession is to be a really good communicator and to have a level of flexibility and emotional maturity to support residents’ decisions."

To enable cyclists in the QSuper Cardiac Challenge to safely traverse the range, the up-lane will be closed from 6am – 8.45am on that date.

As per the permit, the closure will affect the uphill lane of the Kennedy Highway (Kuranda Range) from Canopy's Edge, Smithfield to RainForestStation, Kuranda.

Any cyclist who has not been able to reach the top of the Range by 8am, will be uploaded into a vehicle. All emergency vehicles will be able to traverse the Range in either direction during the closure.

The Queensland Greens have named Jennifer Cox as their candidate for Hill in the upcoming state election.

Ms Cox who lives in Yungaburra is a digital marketing contractor and founder of the Tableland Roller Derby League.

Growing up on the Table-

“A big passion of mine is being able to get a degree without having to take out a small mortgage.”

Ms Cox said that health is also another issue facing the residents of Hill, “In our rural area we have a lack of services. We have to travel to see specialists, which makes waiting lists really long,” she said.

“We want to fund healthcare and employ more GP’s, nurses and specialists.”

She is also campaigning for more jobs, better services for the community and to put power back in the hands of regular people.

“We're all affected by the lack of job opportunities and inadequate services in our community,” Ms Cox said.

“The COVID-19 crisis has made all these issues worse.

Unfortunately, the major parties are too beholden to their corporate donors to deliver for our community.”

Ms Cox also said that the Greens have a plan to create more jobs in FNQ. “We’ll create more than 2,700 jobs and revitalise manufacturing in the Far North by investing in renewables and public housing, which will also address our region’s growing waiting list for social housing,” she said.

“We will fund our plans by making big mining corporations, banks and developers pay their fair share.

“The Greens are the only party to refuse corporate donations, so if we win we’ll always put people first.”

Campion runs as Hill Independent

Tolga resident Peter Campion is running as an Independent for Hill in the state election.

ONE of FNQ's more colourful characters, Tolga resident Peter Campion, who describes himself as "a realist, not a politician", has announced that he will run as an Independent Candidate for Hill at the Queensland state election which is being held on October 31.

The seat of Hill includes Innisfail, Tully, Atherton and Ravenshoe and is currently held by Katter Australia Party member Shane Knuth.

Mr Campion said he is run-

ning as an independent as he has observed a sense of frustration from residents in Hill about their elected officials. “People are frustrated about the quality of governance both in Queensland and Australia,” he said.

“I chose to run as an independent for the State elections to make the biggest possible impact.

“We have a situation right now where the state premiers are ignoring the constitution and it’s not there to be ignored and that has to change.”

Mr Campion believes that there are several issues facing the residents of Hill. “The primary problem for everyone in Australia is the excessive amounts of regulations,’ he said.

“To improve the lives of farmers we need to cut back on regulations and red tape.

“Water security is also a big issue facing farmers on the Tablelands.”

Moving to Cairns as a child Mr Campion has worked for several tiers of government including working as a Tablelands firefighter and senior station officer.

“For years I have dared to debate the sillier aspects of modern ideological wrongology via the opinion pages of our region's newspapers and I've often been accused of being an LNP stooge,” Mr Campion said.

“But despite once briefly flirting with the LNP (and hav-

ing a son-in-law who is a famous National), I have no connection to that increasingly left-wing organisation.”

“Political parties are now the problem and not the solution," he said. "They've had plenty of time to solve the issues they claim are our major problems, but they never do. Why? Incompetence or reluctance? It has to be one of those.”

“It's time to reclaim our representative democracy by voting the parties - all of them - out of office."

Mr Campion said his core policy is to slash red and green tape to clear the way back to cheap energy and plentiful jobs.

“My slogan is 'Less government, less tax, get out of our wallets and get off our backs'," he said.

“We need our elected representatives to actually represent our electorates in parliament, not to represent political parties controlled by shadowy background figures from the southeast corner of Queensland.”

While advocating that all parties be voted out of office, there is one politician that Mr Campion is a fan of.

“The greatest leader in the free world at the moment is a self-made real estate billionaire who is married to an international super model and he was elected as the President of the US.”

Tableland farmer Nick Cuda set to run as LNP candidate for Hill ATHERTON local Nick Cuda was last week announced as the LNP candidate for the seat of Hill in the upcoming Queensland state election.

Nick Cuda is a born and bred Atherton farmer who grew up on a dairy farm and joined the LNP when it was incorporated into one party.

Nick said it was a pleasure and an honour to be nominated.

“It’s great knowing that

you can do something for the community because we need change as nothing is happening in our electorate,” he said.

Mr Cuda said he believed some of the biggest issues facing the residents of Hill include hospital services, education and roads.

“We have a new hospital building in Atherton but we need to make sure we have the services there so that people

don’t have to travel to Cairns.” he said.

“I’m also in favour of anything that brings jobs, so that our kids don’t have to move away.

“We need to introduce processing plants up here to process the fruit and vegetables that are picked locally as well as look at building recycling plants.”

Postal vote applications open THE Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) opened postal vote applications for the 2020 State general election open on Monday, September 14.

Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said the option to apply for a postal vote weeks before the start of the election period, will help electors who may not want to vote in person due to COVID-19.

“The ECQ is working to ensure Queensland electors have every opportunity to vote for their representative in the next Parliament,” Mr Vidgen said.

“With COVID-19 still a factor, we anticipate strong interest in postal voting just as we saw in March’s local government elections where around 570,000

electors applied.

“While electors can apply for a postal vote on the ECQ website or by phoning the ECQ’s call centre, we can’t mail the ballot papers until after candidate nominations close in mid-October.”

The ECQ is also establishing special postal voting arrangements for residents of certain aged care facilities which would usually receive a mobile polling service as a ‘declared institution’.

Out with the old in with the new

THE new Mareeba Ambulance Station has finished its construction a month ahead of schedule with the official opening held on Monday, September 14.

The $2 million-dollar investment includes a four-bay plant room, patient care store, office space, day room, write-up area and multifunctional rest and study rooms.

The new station will host 17 front line medics and a muchneeded upgrade from their old facility that was demolished next door.

Queensland Ambulance Service Assistant Commissioner Michelle Baxter said that the new facility was a large step up

from the old station.

“We have provided a brand new modern facility for our paramedics, it's a $2.4 million facility with all the mod cons,” she said.

“It includes the ability for vehicles to drive through rather than reverse in.”

“The new facility also allows us to have better response times, and allows us to be more responsive to the community.”

Ms Baxter admits that the old station had a few issues.

“There were large distances to the vehicles, we also suspect the old facility may have had asbestos and the old facility just wasn’t functional anymore,” she said

“The new building has training facilities here and it can hold 18 staff at the moment with scope to hold more staff in the future.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said she was impressed by the new station.

“This was an election commitment from 2017 and its $2.4 million dollars well spent and I’m pleased that we were able to deliver it on time,” she said “Compared to the old station it’s a great facility to have for the local community.

“It was also a great opportunity for employment in the local community during the building process.”

LAST Tuesday saw the unveiling of Malanda’s latest tourist attraction a photo cutout sign of three tree kangaroos, at the Malanda Tourist Information centre.

An initiative of The Malanda Chamber of Commerce, the scene was created by artist Marie Martin to help promote Malanda on social media.

The sign is designed to be an attraction for tourists using the town’s most famous animal, the Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Tablelands Regional

Council Mayor Rod Marti, and Division 3 Councillor Dave Bilney.

Gail Barton, Secretary of The Malanda Chamber of Commerce, said that the Chamber thought that it would be a good initiative for the town as Yungaburra has the Platypus.

“We are known for the Tree Kangaroo and we thought it would be a good way to put Malanda on the map," she said.

“We (The Chamber) decided to fund it ourselves; the use of this sign and hashtags is a way of using social media and get-

The sign has been well received with tourists stopping wanting to use it while it was still being installed.

Several Tableland businesses helped in its construction including Wongabel Concrete who donated the concrete, Tableland Constructing and Welding who fabricated the frame, and BJS Pluming and Civil Contracting who provided ‘dial before you dig’ and the holes.

Brain Cancer survivor helping others in need A BRAIN cancer survivor on the Tablelands is now raising funds for the foundation that helped her to survive.

Gina Raccanello from Millaa Millaa was diagnosed with breast cancer and metastases in the lungs in 2013 and after six months of chemotherapy and a mastectomy, she was cleared.

Then in 2017 a 3.4cm and 1.2cm tumour were found in her brain. This time Gina chose Professor Charlie Teo, the renowned neurosurgeon in Sydney, to operate.

Dr Teo successfully removed the tumours but unfortunately,

due to the type of cancer the tumours returned. Further operations in 2018, 2019 and 2020 have helped to keep the tumours under control and allowed Gina to live a full life.

One person that Gina met through Charlie Teo is Nate Moule from Mareeba who recently celebrated his fourth birthday.

Nate’s mother Kate was originally told that her son would be lucky to make a year. Thanks to Dr Teo’s operations Nate has had extra years added to his life.

However after 6 operations Dr Teo is now unable to help

control Nate’s cancer any more.

Being a patient and meeting other patients of Dr Teo is the reason why Gina has chosen to fundraise for The Charlie Teo Foundation for Brain Cancer Research.

Gina has organised two fun ways to help raise funds for The Charlie Teo Foundation. The Super Hero Nate’s Mega Raffle; a wheelbarrow full of prizes which is being drawn on October 3 and the Brain Wave Pigeon Sprint, which is happening on September 26. Both events will help raise funds for The Charlie Teo Foundation.

Gina said as a patient of Prof Charlie Teo she has been given the opportunity to live life to the fullest.

Pigeon number 11 flies away with win ON Saturday, September 5, the Great Blue Pigeon Race was flown and won by pigeon number 11.

The aim of The Great Blue Pigeon Race was to raise money for Moyamoya Australia, a rare progressive cerebrovascular disorder that mainly affects children.

Founder of Moyamoya Australia and Ravenshoe local Nicola Baker whose 16 year old son Jed, suffers from the disease said they raised over $7000 from the pigeon race.

“The $7000 dollars will help

us to fund our Smokey Blue Rally which is happening in October, which will in turn help us to raise profile of the disease and also more funds for Moyamoya Australia,” she said.

“Eventually I’m hoping to be able to offer financial support for people affected by Moyamoya disease.

“We are still in our infancy and we are trying to build our kitty.”

The Great Blue Pigeon Race was run similar to a Melbourne Cup sweepstake where people could buy a pigeon and then

name it.

While there were only 30 pigeons in the race, 13 separate books were sold meaning that pigeon number 11 had 13 different names including, Les, Go Pelican, No Naplam No, Casey, Milkshake Man, Hedwig 09, KTM and P4.

Nicola also said that three of the people who won, donated their winnings back to Moyamoya Australia.

“Peoples generosity just blew me away,” she said.

“It was so much fun we are looking at making it an annual

event.”

The pigeons took off from Babinda and landed in Cairns about 40 minutes later.

BARRON FALLS WALKING TRAIL: The Barron Falls Walking Trail project will connect the Kuranda township with the Barron Falls lookout, offering visitors to Kuranda a linking trail between Jum Rum Creek Conservation Park and the Barron Gorge National Park, alleviating foot traffic on Barron Falls Road. Stage 1 of construction is nearing completion, with the overall project scheduled for completion by late 2020.

RE-SHEET PROGRAM: Council is continuing to carry out the re-sheeting of unsealed roads throughout the Shire. Re-sheeting involves re-shaping the road formation to improve drainage and importing, moisture conditioning and compacting gravel material to rebuild the pavement structure and improve the running surface. Studt Road, Keal Road and Kay Road in Mareeba and Bilwon Road in Biboohra have been re-sheeted this financial year.

BYRNES STREET MAREEBA: Stage 2 of the Byrnes Street Beautification Project is complete, giving the street a refreshed and revitalised feel. IN July the Mareeba Shire Council tabled an amendment to Council’s planning scheme to protect the Nullinga Dam development area.

The decision was made after the issue was identified by the Queensland Minister for Infrastructure and Planning.

Under section 26 of the Plan-

ning Act 2016, Council was directed to amend the Mareeba Shire Council Planning Scheme 2016 to protect the proposed site of Nullinga Dam by the Minister.

The State Government endorsed a detailed business case for the proposed Nullinga Dam in August 2019. While the Queensland Government decided not to proceed with construction at present, Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin welcomed the Government’s decision to take immediate steps to protect the proposed Nullinga Dam area.

“The development area will be preserved in a way, as a stra-

tegic precautionary measure,” she said.

The planning scheme amendment will introduce the Nullinga Dam Overlay. This overlay will identify the Nullinga Dam development area and will make all development, except for a dwelling house and associated outbuilding/s, impact assessable development within the Nullinga Dam development area.

“A key requirement of the planning scheme amendment is to ensure any new development within the Nullinga Dam development area is limited in size and designed to be relocatable,” Cr Toppin said.

Subdivision to create any new lots within the Nullinga Dam development area would also not be supported by the planning scheme amendment.

The IQ-RAP Working Group Chair, Rick Britton, has sent letters to each political party to request infrastructure investment commitments over the next four years.

Mareeba Shire Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies said investment into roads has a very significant multiplier effect in terms of benefits. “The investments can immediately catalyse local construction jobs in each of our communities,” Cr Davies said. will benefit Businesses through better and more reliable road quality that ensures greater productivity and efficiency.

“More areas will open up to tourists and there will be better safety outcomes for all road users.”

IQ-RAP Partners have requested commitments from each party to endorse the Inland Queensland Road Network Strategy, invest $200m into currently unfunded priorities across the 28 local government areas, and progress detailed planning for the identified priorities.

They have also asked for a commitment from all parties to

work collaboratively with all IQRAP partners to secure federal funding and work collaboratively to roll out funding in a timely manner to ensure benefits can be achieved as quickly as possible.

“By taking a long-term, strategic, and collaborative approach to planning and funding of our major freight routes,” Cr Davies said.

“IQ-RAP Partners have secured nearly $1.4 billion in funding since February 2016, but there is still more than $3.7 billion of investment required to upgrade the strategic roads and bridges to fit-for-purpose standards across the 28 local government areas that make up 70% of the State.”

Regional Development Australia Townsville and North West Queensland (RDA) has provided secretariat and project management to IQ-RAP since 2013.

The project covers 70% of QLD across 28 local government areas.

Partners include 28 local governments, five Regional Development Australia committees and RACQ. The strategic inland Queensland road network was recognised as being of national significance on Infrastructure Australia’s 2020 Infrastructure Priority List in February 2020.

New kitchen brings new opportunities THE Mareeba Wildcats have been able to give their old kitchen a new lease on life after they recently renovated their clubhouse kitchen.

The $22,000 upgrade was possible through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund which was secured by the old committee and now has been put to use by the new committee.

Longevity was a key word when building this new kitchen as the club didn’t want to have to make any more upgrades or

repairs for some time.

Kathleen McGrath, a volunteer at the Mareeba Swimming Pool and the Mareeba Wildcats was the main driving force behind securing the funding for the new kitchen.

“It was a complete renovation from the ground up, it was gutted and we started again,” she said.

“This new kitchen gives us the opportunity to go back to FNQ Swimming and say we can host some more events here now.

“It was a little bit of a shock to us that we won because that’s a lot of money for a small club.”

The upgraded kitchen will also give volunteers more time to see their children swim and participate in carnivals with less maintenance to do on the kitchen.

Kuranda man faces court for dog hanging A KURANDA man appeared in Mareeba Magistrates Court on Thursday, September 10 facing charges of Injuring an Animal.

On June 6 2019 John Graham Smith, 75, made a phone call to police admitting that he had tied his neighbour’s dog to his back deck.

During proceedings the 000 call was played to the court, where Mr Smith said he was “fed up” with the dog being on his property and that he had made numerous complaints against the animal to police and local council.

He told the emergency operator he found “a good strong length of rope, formed a noose” and “put it around the dog’s neck,” he said “I hoisted it up using my handrail on my deck, its feet are off the ground, and it seemed to have a little trouble breathing apparently.”

When the operator asked if he had just “hung the neighbour’s dog” the man confirmed that was correct.

He told the court that, that when he tied the dog to the handrail it jumped up aggressively with its front paws trying to climb up onto the wire lengths forming the balustrade and its back paws were on the wood section of the deck.

Mr Smith said in court that he had no intention of killing the dog.

Disturbing police vest cam footage was shown in the court of a dog hanging by a rope from the back of a patio at a Kuranda property. He also told the court that he had the dog since it was about 8 weeks old and that it had completed dog training school.

Mr Smith’s defence brought up that their defendant had been suffering from depression, had multiple health issues and was taking a number of medications at the time.

Mr Smith has pleaded not guilty, claiming he was of an unsound mind, and a noticeable absence of wilfulness, under section 172 of the Mental Health Act. A decision will be handed down September 15 at the Atherton Magistrates Court.

Regional Australia hit hard by suicide REGIONAL Australians impacted by suicide are more likely to experience multiple losses of family, friends and community members (67%) compared to their city counterparts (60%) – new research has revealed for the first time.

It comes as the findings also show growing concerns the economy, jobs, cost of living and drug and alcohol use increase suicide rates in the regions in the wake of COVID19.

National peak body, Suicide Prevention Australia, released the regional-specific results on World Suicide Prevention Day held on September 10.

CEO Nieves Murray said over 4 million regional Australians had been personally impacted by suicide, with 66% of those living outside city limits supporting the Federal Government introducing a standalone National Suicide Prevention Act that takes a whole of government, not just mental health, approach.

“You only have to look around and see that global disasters like COVID-19 hit our local economies, communities and services harder and faster than our capital cities,” Ms Murray said.

“The better we can proactively predict what economic and social risks are facing our regional and rural communi-

ties, the better we can prepare Australians and prevent suicide rates increasing.

“International evidence shows the best way to achieve this is through a standalone National Suicide Prevention Act that embeds a whole of government, not just a mental health, response.”

Ms Murray said Australia was headed for a “clash of eco-

nomic and social distress”, with the suicide prevention sector significantly concerned about suicide risks driven by employment (82%), social isolation (81%) and relationship breakdown (77%), with 65% of respondents reporting a need for more funding and support to cope.

“International research shows as economies go down, suicide rates go up, and Australia has just entered its worst recession in nearly a century,” Ms Murray said.

“The longer COVID-19 and its economic and social impacts run, the bigger the risk of a hidden ‘third wave’ of suicide deaths not recorded in the official virus figures.

“While our end goal must be reducing suicide rates towards zero, our immediate priority must be minimising any risk of them increasing during and after COVID-19.

“The national community was already vulnerable after the Bushfires and we must now urgently increase our efforts to fortify the community against COVID-19 spreading to suicide rates.

Ms Murray said Australia’s annual suicide death rate (3046) is currently more-than-three times that of COVID-19’s (788).

Cops and Robbers golf for charity ON Saturday September 12, The Tablelands Police Golf Association held their annual Cops and Robbers golf day at the Atherton Golf course.

The Cops and Robbers golf day has been running since 2011 and was started as a way to play golf and raise funds for Police Legacy. The event has grown from just a few players to nearly 200 players in the yearly event.

1. Place zucchini in a colander and toss with 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Let stand 10 minutes then wring zucchini dry with paper towel.

2. Combine water and quinoa in a small saucepan; bring to a boil.

Reduce quinoa to a simmer; cover and cook for 10 minutes.

3. Remove from heat, fluff with fork and let stand ten minutes.

4. Place zucchini in a large bowl and add quinoa, egg, garlic, oregano, grated cheese, and panko crumbs.

5. Season with salt and pepper; mix until thoroughly combined.

6. Heat olive oil in a skillet.

7. Working in batches, add zucchini mixture into skillet, flattening slightly; cook until golden and crisp, about 4 minutes per side.

8. Transfer fritters to a paper towel–lined plate.Serve with yogurt, sour cream or soy sauce.

Push for Aussie owned dairy

District Chairman for the Queensland Dairy farmers Organisation James Geraghty wants to see Dairy Farmers back in Australian hands.

THERE'S a growing push for government intervention into the sale of Lion Dairy and Drinks to help secure the Far North’s milk industry and return it to Australian hands.

The sale of Lion Dairy and drinks to the Chinese owned Mengniu Dairy, was announced last year and had been approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The deal was then called off last month after Federal Treas-

urer Josh Frydenberg issued a statement about the sale making the sale dead in the water.

“My preliminary view of the Mengniu Dairy sale is that the proposed acquisition would be contrary to the national interest,” Mr Frydenberg said.

Lion Dairy and drinks which owns Dairy Farmers, Pura, Farmers Union Iced Coffee, Dare, Big M and others is currently owned by Japanese owned Kiring Holdings.

“Lion notes that China Mengniu Dairy Company Limited (Mengniu Dairy) has been awaiting the outcome of the Foreign Investment Review Boards (FIRB) review of its proposed purchase of Lion Dairy and Drinks,” they wrote.

“Given this approval is unlikely to be forthcoming at this time, Lion and Mengniu Dairy have mutually agreed to cease the current sale process.

“We are disappointed with this outcome and will now consider pathways forward in relation to the Lion Dairy and Drinks business.”

There are now calls from multiple parties to try and get some iconic dairy brands back into Australian hands.

District Chairman for the Queensland Dairy farmers Organisation James Geraghty said that interested Australian companies should now revisit buying the milk brands from Kirin.

“Norco and Bega are both Australian companies that showed interest in the initial stages but neither could raise the finance,” Mr Geraghty said.

“Lion don’t want to be here and they are looking for a quick sale.

“Senator Pauline Hanson and Senator Jacqui Lambie indicated their displeasure about it being sold outside of Australia.

“This now opens the opportunity for the senators to put their money where their mouth is and provide some help for the Australian companies that were interested in purchasing Lion.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth claims it was bad government policies that had

caused the destruction of the dairy industry.

“On the Atherton Tablelands we had 270 dairy farmers and now we are down to 51 and still both State and Federal governments continue to do nothing,” he said.

“The least the Federal Government could do is offer incen-

tives such as low interest loans or subsidies for Australian entities to purchase Australian based companies such as Dairy Farmers.

“It is not in this country’s best interest for Australian businesses to be owned by foreign Chinese companies, especially through these volatile times.”

“Early detection is vital and through destruction of infected plants, the build-up of fungal spores in soil can be minimised, limiting the spread of the disease,” she said “The grower is working closely with the Panama TR4 Program team to ensure a set of biosecurity requirements are met, to minimise the risk of spread from the property.”

Stephen Lowe, Chair of the Australian Banana Growers' Council, said that while news of the disease spreading was not surprising, it was still a blow for industry and the business concerned.

“Our thoughts are, of course, with the grower affected. This is a challenging time for them and we will assist in any way we can,” he said.

"But as any grower knows, there's rarely a chance to process news like this. You get on with the job – and that's no easy feat when you get a notice of a posi-

Ms Evans said the disease had spread gradually and was still contained within the Tully Valley.

“We’re increasing surveillance in the Tully Valley, and expanding it to all banana growing areas across Far North Queensland,” she said.

“Strong on-farm biosecurity and regular surveillance are vital to limiting the spread of Panama TR4.

“The Panama TR4 Program will continue to work closely with growers and the industry to deliver a cost-effective surveillance program that provides an early and effective response to disease presence.”

BIOSECURITY Queensland (BQ) has confirmed Panama disease tropical race 4 (Panama TR4) is present on a fifth commercial banana farm in the Tully Valley.

Panama TR4 Program Leader Rhiannon Evans said the property had been declared a suspect new case last month following preliminary tests, and a final test had now given a conclusive diagnosis of Panama TR4.

“The final test has come back positive, confirming the result of the preliminary test in August,” Ms Evans said.

“We use a complex series of laboratory tests to ensure an accurate and reliable diagnostic result.

“We know banana growers have worked hard to implement and maintain biosecurity measures across the region, but we should not be discouraged by this new detection.

I CAN’T believe all the hate that has been directed at Queensland's border closures over the past few weeks. The part that I find astounding is that Queensland isn’t the only state with its borders currently closed. WA, SA the NT and even Tasmania have said thanks, but no thanks to visitors from NSW and VIC. The Border closures seem to be popular with Queenslanders but not so much with our southern states. It’s almost like southern residents, media and politicians have taken it personally that we don’t want them infecting our state.

Ms Palaszczuk and Ms Berejiklian have been involved in a battle of words in recent weeks over the opening of Queensland's borders. According to insiders "They just don't like each other."

Even the ACT chipped in on the QLD border reopening saying they haven’t had a case of COVID in over 2 months but Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young knocked that on the head with one of the simplest arguments ever by saying “The ACT is surrounded by NSW.” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian seems to be the biggest hater claiming that the border closure is costing NSW jobs. NSW is heavily reliant on tourism and even though it's unlikely to see international travellers for some time, allowing more domestic holiday-makers would help their

struggling accommodation, food and entertainment businesses.

WA Premier Mark McGowan fired the first salvo and claimed that WA was being "bullied" by NSW and said he didn't want to be told what to do by a state which allowed the Ruby Princess coronavirus outbreak to occur.

"New South Wales had the Ruby Princess — I mean, seriously? And they are trying to give us advice on our borders, seriously?" he said.

Earlier in the year Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also stuck in the boot, telling NSW it was "not going to be lectured to" by a state with the highest number of coronavirus cases.

Ms Berejiklian told the ABC that "I'm sure those premiers are getting more popular in their states for keeping their borders closed," she said.

So what’s a premier to do? Go with what her constituents want, go with what economists want or try to appease the rest of Australia?

The answer is pretty simple; it should be people over profits.

NSW time and time again has asked QLD to open its border, but NSW didn’t seem to have much of a problem closing its border to Victoria when the time came.

The Queensland Premier has said time and time again that Queenslanders safety is her paramount aim. Somehow this seems like foreign concept to the NSW Premier.

LETTERS Neglected FNQ Roads

I am writing to you in regards to the useless Green ALP coalition running QLD. Roads in FNQ have been neglected for years. They think they can baffle us with their bull... by resurfacing roads that are "un-vehicle worthy".

They award contracts to construction companies from other states that have no idea about our soils, climate and weather conditions in the North.

A classic example is the road between Mt Surprise and Georgetown. 3 months ago they were still working on that section and yes it does look great. Until you return from the Einasliegh river towards Junction creek.

Not even three months completed and already massive sections have blown out and have to be repaired and now it’s rougher than the old narrow section that they replaced. You need a minimum of 6% concrete stabilisation in these roads in FNQ. But no these imbeciles in Brisbane have squandered hundreds of millions of dollars on resurfacing and inadequate road repairs and construction, which ends up costing Queenslanders three times the original amount.

You can see the difference in the road constructions around the Tablelands. RCG constructed a section of road between Wongabel road and the paintball at the bottom of the Herberton range, not one repair has been made there.

The Herberton/Atherton road, especially from the range to Herberton and the section through Carrington, destroys the suspension of our vehicles as it’s that rough.

Knuth is nothing more than a toothless pussy cat in parliament.

He has said he would take it to parliament and nothing has happened in three years?

What happened to Mareeba

MY name is Bruce McNamee, my father Fred McNamee was the local Solicitor in the township up until 1966 when he sold his practice and moved to Brisbane, mainly for the kid’s education.

I have not been back to North Queensland in 54 years, but got in the van two months ago to do the Grey Nomad thing up to Cooktown.

To say I was saddened and shocked by what I saw in Mareeba

is an understatement.

The other towns I went through on the way to Cooktown were in the main, magnificent compared with how I remember them in the 60s.

Mareeba has managed to do a reverse Rip Van Winkle and destroy or stuff up some natural assets.

Civic Theatre, Removal of old fig trees and Rail Station, public buildings, parks ,court precinct, and turning centre nature strip into parking amongst other things.

No decent bakery/coffee shop you can sit down in to watch the world go by in the Main Street.

Sorry about the rant but there must be a reason for 50 years of going backwards?

Students celebrate sports day with a twist STUDENTS at Mareeba State High School were still able to get a taste of a sports day after the school hosted an unorthodox sports day last Friday.

The day didn’t consist of the normal events seen on a sports day but instead activities like egg and spoon races, tunnel ball, sack races and even a wheelbarrow race to end off the day.

The day was a huge success with students and teachers all dressed up in their house colours and spirit for one of the only school sporting events this year.

David swims personal best MAREEBA Wildcats Swimmer David Eade has smashed four of his personal bests (PB) at the recent Speedo Short Course Championship shaving 12 seconds off one of his races.

The championship took place in Brisbane on August 29 and 30 with David showing out and beating four of his personal bests on his eight swims.

David beat his PB’s on the 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m fly and the 100m backstroke with him taking a

massive 12.21 seconds off his breaststroke time.

“I didn’t get any medals but I came back with four new PB’s,” he said.

“I feel so happy, I didn’t want to go at first and I really didn’t expect to get any new PB’s.

“I’m glad to knock some of my PB’s off and this is a pathway to get back to nationals.”

Leading up to the competition David was training three times a week for three months

with his main aim being to get his breaststroke time down under two minutes.

David did that and more with his new time for the 100m breaststroke being 1:57:35. In a sport where milliseconds count this is a mammoth effort.

Last weekend David returned to the waters for another Speedo Short Course held in Cairns with the aim of smashing the four left over races and getting new PB’S.

Cricketers celebrate last year's success LAST Saturday saw the Mareeba Cricket Club playing the first of two Black Dog Day games, followed by their presentations for last season.

The day was attended by Mareeba Shire Councillors, LNP Senator Susan McDonald and LNP candidate for Cook Nipper Brown.

Jake Bombardieri was awarded a medal for his participation in both peninsula and CFN representative duties last season, while Angus Campman was awarded the Junior Champion Player of the Year Award.

Brendan Falvo was awarded the Gordon Pashen Memorial Shield for making the most runs in Second Grade last season while Brendan Payne was awarded the John Henry Senior Champion Player of the Year Award.

Kylie Campman was awarded the Frosty Firth Volunteer of the Year award for her work in the canteen, Irene Roy was awarded a lifetime membership to the Mareeba Cricket Club for her tireless work in front and behind the scenes.

Spring racing continues

Ladies return to the pitch for Lacy Bra Cup THE first game of the annual Lacy Bra Cup was played on Sunday at Borzi Park with people coming from as far as Brisbane to get a taste of the event.

Jess Groth travelled all the way from Brisbane to get a game in this season’s competition, returning after she played in the first season in 2017.

A bit of rain didn’t dampen the ladies spirits and plenty of good cricket and laughter was seen out on the field.

Brendan Falvo received the Gordon Pashen Memorial Shield for most runs in Second Grade.

Newcomers weren’t left behind according to Lacy Bra Cup Organiser Trisha Spry with many of the ladies showing the ropes to the new players.

“The ladies were super supportive in encouraging newcomers to learn to bowl and hit the ball,” she said.

“It’s not too late to get involved, sign up online or come along to one of the games to register.”

SPRING racing will return to the Atherton Turf Club this Saturday with the Atherton Annuals.

The Atherton Annuals will take place at the Atherton Turf Club at Morrow Park with a full day on and off the track for excited racegoers.

Tickets for the races sold out within four weeks of being announced, the gates open at 11am and social distancing will be observed.

Fight night roaring success Biggest event in speedway history

Boxers At War 6 was a roaring success with the night hitting capacity early and a show of a lifetime was put on for those attending.

SATURDAY night hosted the Bryde Boxing Gym Boxers at War 6 and had many competitors from all across the region attending and even more spectators.

With 21 fights scheduled for the night and one exhibition match the crowd was expected to be large but no one could have guessed the numbers the fights attracted.

With a capacity of 500 nearly filled within an hour of the fights starting many people

were turned away once they hit capacity due to COVID restrictions.

Matthew Carrol fought hard and with an aura of professionalism to get the belt and beat his Thursday Island opponent for the main fight at the end of the night.

“It was an awesome fight it was like a professional bout, people were walking out saying top show, great show,” said Bryde's Boxing Gym owner Wayne Bryde.

“The crowd was really getting into it and we had no incidents.

“That’s what you want to hear when you host a night like this.”

The first title fight didn’t go as smoothly, with Xavier Richardson losing to his Home Hill opponent by decision after a tough battle.

Lachlan McWaters was raring to go for his debut match but was put to a stop quickly hitting the canvas early, he

tried to recover but the Reff put a stop to the bout quickly.

Australian Katter Party (KAP) Leader Robbie Katter and KAP candidate for Cook Tankia Parker both attended the night with belts being presented to the victors by Mr Katter.

Brydes Boxing Gym would like to express their thanks to the many different people and volunteers who made the night the great success it was.

THE Mareeba Speedway will come alive this Saturday, September 19 with the venues biggest event to date set to make its mark.

Saturday night will come alive with the deafening roar of racing with over 1000 spectators set to watch the biggest speedway event ever held in Mareeba.

Over 20 cars will be making the trip from Queensland’s southeast corner to participate in some of the races and even two title races Mareeba Speedway Vice President Tim Smith is excited to be a part of the biggest race meet the speedway has ever seen.

“Basically we have put all the big classes on to make it the biggest show we have ever had in Mareeba by far,” he said.

“We got about 600 people for the last event and that was only a club event so we are expecting more than that for this one.

“This event is really going to

open some eyes in Mareeba and see how big speedway racing really is.”

The North Queensland Modified Sedan Title and the North Queensland Formula 500 Title are the two title races that will be taking place on the night with local driver Matt Smith taking his Chrysler Centura for a spin in the modified sedan title race.

“It’s the only car of its kind racing in modified sedans in Australia, the rest are mostly commodores or falcons,” he said.

“It’s great to be a part of the biggest speedway event Mareeba has ever seen.

“It’s going to be great to race against all the other drivers coming from across Queensland.”

Spectators and drivers will get the chance to slow their heart rates with a live band playing after the races.

Bulls go down in crunch match THE Mareeba Bulls travelled to Leichhardt last Saturday to take on the Lions, knowing that a win was paramount in their efforts to keep in touch with the leaders.

In contrast to the previous weekend where they showed so much promise the bulls copped a hammering by the coastal side going down 4-0, three of those goals coming in the first half.

Even down to 10 men in the second half the Lions were able to rub salt into their wounds to put the match beyond doubt.

The Bulls need to win two of their remaining match’s to secure a top four finish.

Dennis Allen’s reserves continued their fine run of form to totally outclass the Lions 11-0.

The Premier Ladies who have been showing tremendous form came up against a determined Leichhardt team and went down 3-0. The Premier Reserve Ladies also went down 4-3 in an entertaining match.

The Youth team under the watchful eye of Luch Avolio had a slender 1-0 win with Gar-

cia-Fraser scoring the only goal of the match.

The Mareeba Colts succumbed 5-0 to the Lions while on Friday night the Men’s Second division had a 1-0 win over JCU with Iacutone getting on the score sheet and the Men’s Third Division went a goal down in the 32nd minute but Byrne was on hand to draw the match in the 67th minute.

The Bulls will be at home to the Stratford Dolphins this Saturday across all divisions.
