Pharmacists celebrated EXPRESS The

LAST Friday, September 25, marked World Pharmacists Day. The day, dedicated to pharmacists, sought to recognise and reflect the great work they do to provide their communities with the best possible medications and care.

Now in its 10th year, this year’s theme for World Pharmacists Day was ‘Transforming global health’ and admires the continual work that pharmacists do to continue to provide for their communities and the constant changes in the medicinal field.

Bianca May Hope, owner of the Discount Drug Store in Mareeba has been living and working as the resident pharmacist for more than 15 years and counts 2020 among her most challenging.

“There has been a lot more pressure on pharmacies to try and bridge the gap between the doctor and the patient as many patients were doing teleconferences, so we were their face to face contact,” she said.

“The most challenging thing was the increase in script volume in conjunction with major nation-wide medication shortages, this was very difficult to manage on a daily basis.

“Everyone was also very unsure of what was happening in the immediate future so people were naturally scared and trying to prepare for the unknown.”

Pharamcy was never at the top of her list but when Mrs Hope found herself within the pharmacy field she made the best of it.

Festival fever hits FNQ AFTER nearly a year of cancelled events, locals now have the chance to experience the first COVID-Safe country music festival in the world, right in their own backyard.

With just days to go, Far North Queensland will become the very first place on earth to host a COVID-Safe country music festival, with The Savannah Summer Series kicking off in Cairns and Mareeba this Thursday and Friday.

Originally scheduled to see a host of local, national and international country music heavyweights land in the region over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend for the first every Savannah in The Round, festival organisers had to postpone the full weekend event to 2021 due to coronvirus restrictions.

Instead the reimagined Savannah Summer Series, will see top Australian talent playing in a COVID-Safe way while giving locals and visitors a taste of what’s to come next year.

Sound Australia’s James Dein said they have managed to work with health authorities in navigating the COVID minefield.

“As gatherings and the regulations around social distancing are relaxed in a measured way it’s important to us and to the economy of the region that we keep the music playing,” said Mr Dein.

Political big guns visit town

LNP candidate Edward “Nipper” Brown’s campaign for the seat for the seat of Cook has gone up another gear in the past week by pulling in some big guns to visit the region.

At Nipper’s campaign launch on September 15, North Queensland Senator Susan McDonald joined regional leaders in a show of support for the former Mareeba Shire councillor.

Last week Nipper was joined by LNP Senator for Queensland Paul Scarr on the campaign trail visiting farmers and business owners within the Cook electorate.

At the campaign launch Nipper made mention of the

fact that Mareeba currently didn’t have on electorate office in the seat of Cook.

If elected Nipper has stated that he would open an electorate office in Mareeba within two weeks of being elected – paying for the rent himself until parliament could organise an official electorate office.

“If elected it would be senseless for me to drive through Mareeba to go to an office in Cairns,” he said.

“So I would be willing to put my hand in my own pocket and pay to have the office opened here in Mareeba until I could get a new office opened officially.

Queensland Senator Paul Scarr said he was shocked when he found out that the office for Cook was in Cairns.

“To properly service the community, you need to be living and working in your community,” he said.

Senator Scarr said one of the

biggest issues facing Far North Queensland was getting tourists back into the region.

“We need to get the borders open as soon as it is safe to do so,” he said.

“Water Infrastructure is also a big issue facing FNQ, this state needs to start building dams again.”

COVID Nipper also believes that infrastructure is the key to turning around the economy of Cook.

“It gets back to building infrastructure and water security,” he said.

“There are a couple of big ticket items that I will work towards, including the Bradfield Scheme, the Lakeland Irriga-

tion Scheme and the Kuranda range.”

“For the Kuranda range we need to get all the stakeholders together like the head of TMR, the Mayors of Cairns and Mareeba and get us all together in one room and say we need to agree on one project and then work towards that project.”

A NEW candidate from a minor party has put her hand up for the upcoming state election.

Tara Garozzo (pictured) who is born and bred in Innisfail will be representing the Informed Medical Options Party (IMOP) in the upcoming election for the

Seat of Hill.

Tara said she never envisioned herself becoming a public figure in politics but recent events had stirred a fire in her belly.

“I stand and advocate for freedom of choice, freedom of

speech and absolute informed medical consent without any judgement or coercion.”

Ms Garozzo lives on small acreage with her husband and their three daughters and said that she fully supports independent scientists and real investigative journalism.

“As we have seen time and time again mainstream media and social networks manipulate facts to suit their agendas,” she said “Australians are capable of knowing the truth and are ready for it, we are hungry for it.

“I believe there is no better time than now to be standing up for our freedom of choice, our freedom of voice.

Ms Garozzo said that she stands for 'my body, my choice', and that she won’t be supporting a COVID vaccine if it comes out anytime soon. “I’m really against anything that has been fast tracked,” she said.

“It will take 8 to 10 years for safety studies to be done, to see what the long term risks are.

“Potentially something fast tracked like a COVID vaccine could have a lot of health issues

a lot later on, you can’t rush that sort of research.”

She also supports natural health remedies, techniques and therapies and strongly believes they need to be recognised and demands that medical cannabis be available for all Australians.

THIS weekend locals will get to participate in a charity rally with a difference with drivers being able to choose their own adventure as they discover towns across the Tablelands.

Smokey Blue Rally fundraising event, Nicola Baker, said the rally will take a different twist with drivers being able to start at four different locations, visiting different towns along the way with all participants

“The four starting points are Kuranda, Yungaburra, Millaa Millaa and Tolga, we will be giving clues along the way for the drivers, there will be 11

towns in total and they have to visit five towns minimum,” she said.

“We want people out of their cars and looking around the towns and hopefully spending a few dollars in each town.”

The event will raise awareness for Moyamoya disease, which is a rare, progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain in an area called the basal ganglia.

Nicola’s 16-year-old son Jed, suffers from Moyamoya and his 17th birthday falls on the long weekend in October, “every birthday we have with him is a blessing.” she said.

She hopes the money raised from the rally can be put back into the charity and in the future help other families that have been affected by Moyamoya.

“I hope the rally raises money for the charity while at the same time it gives people the opportunity to visit towns and inject some money back into the local communities,” Nicola said.

New eased restrictions across QLD ON Friday morning September 25 Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk declared it to be a ‘very happy Friday’ after Queensland recorded no new COVID-19 cases for three days in a row.

Due to the lower than expected numbers, the Premier announced the easing of restrictions including the number of people allowed at outdoor dining venues across the state from October 1.

The new easing of restrictions includes increasing the density of one person per four square meters to one person per two square meters at outdoor venues and dining establishments.

“More people will be allowed to meet their friends in a local beer garden or at an outdoor café.” Ms Palaszczuk said.

Theme parks and zoos will also be able to welcome more

people.

End of year sports and school events can also increase numbers from 500 to 1000 people outdoors, but they must have a COVID safe checklist.

The announcement regarding the easing of restrictions was overshadowed 24 hours later when Queensland Health reported three new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, September 26.

All three new cases were acquired overseas and were being managed by Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CCHHS).

Two of the cases were crew members who tested positive on a foreign-owned cargo ship off the Far North Coast. The crew members were working on a bauxite ore ship 20 nautical miles off the coast of Weipa.

A spokesperson from the Cairns and Hinterland Hospi-

tal and Health Service said that the two crew members had been transferred to Cairns Hospital for treatment, where they remained in isolation.

“All other crew members on board the vessel have been tested and returned negative results,” the CHHHS spokesperson said.

The third case is a returned traveller who tested positive while in hotel quarantine.

He is a resident of Western Australia, while all the other passengers on his incoming flight into Queensland were also in quarantine At the time of printing Queensland had eight active cases of COVID-19 with 1,141 recovered cases.

One month till election WITH the Queensland State election only one month away there are several key dates that voters need to be aware of.

If you don’t want to go to a polling booth on election day you can register for postal votes, but you must be registered by October 16. Postal votes will be sent to electors following the close of candidate nominations and ballot paper draw in midOctober.

Any elector can apply for a postal vote online, by calling 1300 881 665 or by returning the form by Friday 16 October.

If you don’t mind voting in person but would prefer to beat the rush on Election Day, you can pre-vote at early polling centres from October 19.

Enrolments for voting will close on October 30, but the Queensland Electoral Commission have asked voters to register before October 10 if possible to ensure you are registered.

School leavers turning 18 before October 30 can fill out a pre-enrolment anytime between now and when they turn 18.

Candidates will be able to nominate and register up to October 12.

The State Election will take place October 31 and voting is compulsory.

Byrnes Street beautification complete as capital works continue THE main street of Mareeba has been completed with the redevelopment and beautification under the Mareeba Shire Council’s Capital Works Program.

The beautification project originally began under previous Mayor Tom Gilmore’s council and was subsequently handed over to Mayor Angela Toppin after the local government elections in March.

The project sought to make Byrnes Street in Mareeba more appealing to visitors and travellers as well as making much needed upgrades to the water mains and asphalt.

Cr Toppin was pleased with how the project turned out and has already set her sights on some other capital works projects.

“We’re very pleased with both sides of the street now matching and we wanted to beautify both sides that was part of the master plan,” she said.

“Initially there were some concerns about not being able to get parks but now the feedback is superb and people are really pleased that there is a bit of pride in the main streetscape.

“We’re very proud of it as

we saw that as a very important project in terms of attracting visitors to our shire and we will continue to beautify and continue to seek grants to do so.”

The centre part of the main street is also on the books to undergo redevelopment and council is currently in talks with The Department of Main Roads to find the best time to undergo those developments.

MSC actively pursues government grants for these projects to minimise the impact of ratepayers, the beautification project was funded through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program.

“There is a good reason why we are doing projects one after the other, it is because we need to sustain employment in COVID-19 times,” Cr Toppin said.

“Not only for our own staff but also for the contractors and sub-contractors.

“We want to roll and keep these projects going.”

Up next on council’s agenda is the upgrade to Railway Avenue followed by other developments to roads and Chillagoe’s new water supply.

TRC spends big Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti at last weeks meeting.

TABLELANDS Regional Council has hit the ground running after its budget was adopted earlier this year.

Mayor Rod Marti said “There’s major road, water and facilities work ahead of us and we’re already hard at work at

meeting our goals for these projects.”

According to the TRC $6.6M is being spent on upgrading roads, $2.6M on gravel resheeting, $1.8M on bitumen resealing $365,000 on drains and $750,000 on other road renewals.

Some of the key road projects include: • improving sections of Lakes Drive and Theresa Creek Road • upgrades to sections of Rifle Range Road, Deep Creek Road, unsealed roads in Walkamin, Powley Road and Eastern Connection Road • asphalt overlay of 3.4km of road in Lake Eacham, Malanda and Millaa Millaa, replacing or reline culverts across the shire and replacing kerbs across the shire.

“We’ve already completed $70,000 worth of drainage work on Nadia Close, Tolga and replaced the gully on Weaver Street in Atherton with new pipes,” Mr Marti said.

“Bridge-wise we have commenced work on the $1.4M replacement and upgrade of Blencoe Creek Bridge on Cashmere-Kirrama Road.

“Our budget has also committed $560,000 for new and replacement footpaths across the region including Sixth Avenue, Loder Street and First Avenue in Atherton.”

The TRC also announced that Kairi Park and Mount Garnet Anniversary Park will be getting new toilets as well as developing a concept plan for toilets at Millaa Millaa Falls.

Mr Marti also announced that Rocky Creek War Memorial Park would be getting a

makeover. “We’re creating a new memorial space for commemorative events like VP Day, replacing plaques, installing new signs and we’ve already completed the new formal entrance.”

“At the Atherton Swimming Pool we’re spending $450,000 on a new structure over the pool and $60,000 on the filtration system.

“We’ll be improving the entrances to our region with four new entry signs and $450,000 will be put towards a new animal management facility to better meet the needs of the community’s pet owners, companion animals and our staff.”

Mr Marti said the budget allocation for ongoing water improvements reflects TRC’s commitment to identifying and implementing long term water solutions for the region.

“At our transfer stations we’ve committed $100,000 to ensure separation of clean and contaminated stormwater,” he said.

“All this spending is on the back of our operating expenditure, which supports daily operations including running libraries and transfer stations, maintaining parks and gardens, facilitating community events, providing and maintain facilities and delivering essential services to homes and business.”

Mr Marti said that while these budget allocations have been finalised, council have also applied for additional grants, the results of which are still pending.

“Hopefully we’ll also secure a grant for a stormwater drainage strategy for Tolga, Rangeview and Tandara so we can

identify the remediation work we need to consider in future budgets,” he said “It certainly is a massive undertaking but, with a few projects already completed and many underway, I have full con-

fidence in the TRC workforce in achieving the deliverables.

“I am looking forward to watching the project progress over the year, and seeing the community benefit from our work.”

Nominations now open for Australia Day awards THE Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) is encouraging residents to nominate individuals and community groups that have gone above and beyond to help others for the 2021 Australia Day awards.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said that this year has been extraordinary in terms of dealing with challenges and opportunities.

“COVID-19 has impacted the way we live our lives but it

has not stopped the outstanding contributions of so many within our community and we must acknowledge these residents and community groups,” Cr Toppin said.

“Mareeba Shire is very fortunate to have so many wonderful, dedicated and communityminded people who volunteer and give back to their local community.

TRC calls for water supply consultation THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is now calling for the communities input into the region-wide draft Water Supply Strategy.

The strategy has determined the most efficient and effective solutions to improving the reliability of TRC’s water supplies.

This strategy also provides a roadmap for optimising water supply infrastructure to ensure the community has reliable and quality water for the lowest whole-of-life cost.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti is excited about the direction and

clarity the strategy provides.

“It’s important that we’ve taken this long-term approach to investigating and identifying solutions because we need to ensure our investment meets current and future needs,” he said.

“We need to be considerate about how we improve and invest in our water supplies.

“In the coming weeks we’ll be mailing detailed water supply scheme information to all our ratepayers.”

Chillagoe set to go with new a tank Chillagoe's old water tanks are set to be replaced by a new 500 kilolitre tank in the hope of increased water security for the town.

On Wednesday September 16 the Mareeba Shire Council awarded a tender to King Concreting Pty Ltd – trading as Civform – for $1,097,577.47 for the construction of a new reservoir at Chillagoe.

The town has been on level three restrictions since 2017 when the existing aquifer began drying up.

The two existing reservoirs will be replaced by a new 500 kilolitre tank, Mayor Toppin said the new tank will increase water capacity by almost 40 per cent “This one new tank will

replace the two older leaking tanks while at the same time increasing the town’s water capacity by about 40 per cent,” she said.

“This will help ensure water security for Chillagoe for consumption and also for fire fighting.

“The people of Chillagoe talk about two things water security and the BDR (Burke Developmental Road), so this is a big step in helping them with water security.”

The project was given a boost after the MSC received $450,000 from the State Government’s Building Our Regions program and $600,000 from the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

Construction is due to start in

October and should be finished around May weather depending.

MSC started to tackle the water supply issue earlier this year by sinking several exploratory bores to locate a new water source.

An exploratory bore was drilled in June to identify the quality and reliability of the underground supply which is approximately 4km from the town.

A council spokesperson said that the council was now doing a second round of testing at the new bore “for water capacity and usability.”

“If everything goes to plan the water from the new bore will go to the treatment plant and then will be used for town water.”

Local tourism alive and well

Local tourism operators like the Golden Drop Winery have continued to operate and provide for local tourists.

MAREEBA has managed to come out of the COVID-19 lockdown period with many local businesses and tourist operators getting back up to speed.

After the lockdown period earlier this year, the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce partnered with Mareeba Shire Council to deliver several campaigns, including ‘shop local’ and encouraging residents to be a ‘local tourist’.

As Mareeba and the region is a majority self-driven tourism market the added push from the local campaigns enabled businesses and tourism operators to stay afloat and keep money

flowing through the town.

Dino Nastasi, Owner and Director of the Mango Drop Winery in Biboorah said that business has been “bubbling along” and they have been able to keep operating due to the local tourism drive.

“Our business is possibly as good as this time last year but different customers, it’s all local,” he said.

“Normally this time of year it would be all fully tourist.

“Business in our main winery is going well, the one in Kuranda has its’ good days when Sky rail is running.”

Chamber of Commerce Joe Moro is excited to see so many local businesses still operating when other towns haven’t been as fortunate.

“The campaigns have been positive for locals to shop local but it has also helped the local tourism industry in Mareeba,” he said.

“From the feedback I have received the business has been as good as it was the year before at least and definitely lifted sales from where they were in March.

“It was a slow start but it has picked up to a reasonable flow of business.”

Knuth calls for more seasonal workers Member for Hill Shane Knuth has called out to the State Government to help secure seasonal workers for the upcoming picking season.

THE Queensland Government has been called upon by Member for Hill Shane Knuth to help secure seasonal workers for Far North Queensland so that fresh produce isn’t left rotting on the ground.

Mr Knuth said that it was good the State Government was supporting the Wide Bay and Bundaberg region by providing the funding recovery package for seasonal workers but more needed to be done for the Far North.

“Once again, FNQ is being left out. We are the food bowl of

the North and farms are finding it hard to source labour during harvest periods,” Mr Knuth said.

“The banana industry alone delivers $1.3 billion to the state’s economy.

“About 90 per cent of Australia’s banana production is from Queensland with the majority produced in Far North Queensland which does not take into consideration our citrus, berry, mango, avocado, papaya and the many other products we grow.

“This is why I am calling on the government to provide the

same package that was rewarded to the Wide Bay be extended to Far North Queensland.”

Mr Knuth said he had already written to both the Minister for Agriculture and State Treasurer outlining the regions concerns after being contacted by many concerned growers.

In his letters, Mr Knuth recommended that there could be a cash incentive for growers to attract workers to pick fruit, provide funding towards FNQ Growers to promote local jobs and run an advertising campaign.

THE Yungaburra Association Incorporated (YAI) held its annual general meeting at the Yungaburra Community Hall on September 15.

The meeting resulted in the election of a new management committee made up of Yungaburra residents.

Michael Hodgkins was elected as the president for the coming year and made special mention to John Pollock who has been the acting president for the past two years.

“Under John’s leadership the association has seen a time of recent growth where there has been a significant number of new business and community members joining the association.” Mr Hodgkins said.

Communications Officer of the YAI Rolf Straatemeier said the aim of the YAI is to encourage and assist the community through promotion, development

and coordination of community events and projects in and around Yungaburra.

“An example of this is the new Yungaburra visitor’s signboard, a large sign in the centre of Yungaburra which will display a map of the area along with local business information, things to do and places to see,” he said “Other support to the community has consisted of helping with funding applications and supporting of local events.

“The association also manages Yungaburra.com, which is one of the highest-ranking websites on the Atherton Tablelands.

Live music set to play again THE Kuranda Amphitheatre is set to reopen thanks the Queensland Government's Arts Queensland's Live Music Venue Support Program.

The COVID pandemic has had a devastating effect on live music venues across the state, especially for unique performance spaces like the Kuranda Amphitheatre where they’ve not had a public gathering or concert since Xavier Rudd in August of 2019.

Recently The Kuranda Amphitheatre received $24,838 through the Live Music Venue Support (LMVS) program for operational costs associated with re-opening and operating the venue.

President of the Kuranda Amphitheatre Liza Dewey said that the money will help keep the venue solvent during the current COVID climate.

“This LMVS money will help us pay the bills and keep us afloat for at least the next 6 months, so that when the big concerts do start happening again we can put them on,” she said.

“We have started getting a few tentative enquires and now we have to map the place out for our COVID safety plan to see how many people we can fit in due to COVID.” The Kuranda Amphitheatre Society also received $11,600 through the Play Local funding program which is aimed at regional Queensland artists and performers.

Ms Dewey said that the Play Local funding will be used to

pay local performers and to put on performances for local residents.

The very first Play Local event will be held on October 10, with Secret Tuesday, One love, The Muddy Barron shakers, The Koahlition, Willie Brim and friends, The Kuranda Choir and a local DJ. “We are calling it the Kuranda Spring recovery day and there are only about 400 tickets available,” Ms Dewey said.

“It will be a daytime event starting at 11am and we will have security enforcing social distancing and seating, people can buy tickets from the Honey House in Kuranda.

Rohan Rusch from Koahlition said he and his bands mates can’t wait to start playing live music again. “We are really keen to get back here and play as some of the greatest bands in the world have played here,” he said.

“The last time we played together was about 8 months ago; it’s been really hard for musicians as we haven’t had anywhere to play.”

Ms Dewey said that not having gigs has affected the community in a number of different ways.

“The community has really missed it; we really need a coming together and some great live music,” she said.

“We need to do something fun rather than concentrating on the doom and gloom around at the moment.”

tion their names. They are just looking to see if number wise it’s worth their while and it will also depend on if the borders are open.”

THE Lioness Club of Mareeba recently won the “Fonnie Treslse Premier Project Award” for the second time in recent history for their contribution to the Mareeba Garden Settlement.

The award seeks to recognise the work that Lioness Clubs do for their local communities and what impact that work has.

This is the second time the club has won this award with their first time being in the 2015-16 year for their Pink Ribbon Day. Before they were disbanded earlier this year they were awarded with the “Fonnie Treslse Premier Project” with the making and distribution of their ‘Fidget Blankets’ to the Mareeba Garden Settlement.

Ex Mareeba Lioness Club President Lyn Dyer was already constructing the blankets for the Garden Settlement before getting the club involved.

“After I had made some of the blankets we decided that we would do it as a project for the club,” she said.

“All up we made about 15 blankets for the patients and we gave them to the garden settlement in December last year.

“You put balls and ribbons and those sorts of things on the blankets and it helps with their motor skills.”

When she found out that the club had won the award for the second time Mrs Dyer was pleased as it meant that their efforts were recognised.

“There are lots of clubs that do bigger projects and we really didn’t think we were going to win,” she said.

“It was just something that we did in the afternoon as a small project.

The blankets were made out of pieces and bits and bobs donated by Lioness club members.

A WAR of words has erupted just weeks out from the state election between the Katter Australia Party (KAP) and the NQ First (NQF) Party over the controversial policy of Far North Queensland seceding as its own state.

The first shots were fired when leader of KAP and Member for Traeger Robbie Katter called out Independent MP and leader of the NQ First Party Jason Costigan saying that Mr Costigan’s announcement on September 22 to create a separate state was the height of hypocrisy after he blocked the KAP’s attempts to fund a study into the idea when he was a member of the LNP in 2018.

“It’s only a pity that he wasn’t on our wavelength a couple of years age when he blocked our attempts to secure funding for a feasibility study into the proposal,” Mr Katter said.

“In 2018, I invited MPs and mayors north of Rockhampton to sign a request to the Premier to fund an independent investigation into the creation of a new NQ state and formulate a secession plan, but both major parties ultimately rejected the move.”

Candidate for Cook Tanika Parker joined her boss in advocating for a new state for FNQ. “The Katter’s Australian Party has long advocated for North Queensland to be its own separate state,” she said.

“It’s about time we were given our own autonomy to control our own assets and have our taxes spent on our own neighbourhoods and not in Brisbane.

“A vote for us is a step closer to the creation of what would be the greatest state in Australia.”

Then Boot Brisbane President Bill Bates jumped in the fray accusing the KAP of ripping off its name and slogan after KAP used the words ‘Boot Brisbane’ in a recent Facebook post.

Mr Bates said the Katter’s had used its registered business name without authorisation in an attempt to gain political advantage over the North Queensland First Party.

“While we acknowledge the years of the KAP’s vocal support of the creation of a North Queensland state, they have not provided a clear pathway to statehood as we had advocated and in particular as to the means to cause the Queensland Government to initiate the process.”

Mr Bates said.

NQ First leader Jason Costigan then fired his own warning shots saying “If you look carefully at what Robbie Katter wanted in 2018, it was a feasibility study and that was probably because unlike myself, he just wasn’t sure if it stacked up,” he said.

“I can understand that because this is the same bloke who apparently once thought the Flinders River emptied into the Coral Sea, we can’t all be experts on geography or economics.

“If Robbie wants to expand his horizons and learn more about the North, he’s welcome to join me for a cold beer at the Dingo Beach pub and I can show him a map.

“If we get the balance of power, it’ll be us demanding a referendum on Statehood, based on the map I have produced whilst the KAP is attending geography lessons.”

Grant helps recycling costs

TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) will now be able to reduce the cost of transporting cardboard and plastics to the recycling facility in Brisbane due to a recently received grant.

The $46,000 grant is provided by the Department of Environment and Science under the Regional Recycling Transport Assistance Package.

This money will be used by TRC to fully cover the recycling transport cost for 12 months.

TRC Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew is appreciative of this new grant and seeing less and less cardboards and plastics going to landfill.

“The recycling plant in Brisbane is our closest facility and transporting our recycling by truck is quite expensive,” he said.

“We have a strong commitment to the diversion of waste from landfill so we normally have to foot the transport costs.

“Long term we would really like to see processing plants in Far North Queensland.”

With the money provided by the new grant TRC is hoping to transport over 500t of cardboard and plastic within the next 12 months.

“In the last two weeks we sent a total of 164 bales of cardboard to Brisbane,” Cr Cardew said.

“In the last quarter of the financial year, we sent a total of more than 54t’s of plastics south.”

Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said there are unique challenges to recycling and re-using waste in regional communities.

“This funding is another way to support regional councils, businesses and charities with the cost of transferring recyclables and creating jobs,” she said.

“There are three times as many jobs in recycling as there are in landfill, so every initiative that helps to increase recycling is supporting more employment.

“It will also encourage and provide support for councils in regional Queensland to divert more resources from landfill and recycle more.

“This is a win for regional Queenslanders who can be part of the state’s war on waste and help to create long-term sustainable jobs.”

Locals work to restore graves A LOCAL historical society is restoring graves and plaques at cemeteries across Far North Queensland.

Vice president of the Eacham Historical Society, Duncan Ray, said the group has been restoring old and unmarked graves on the Tablelands for about 30 years.

“In the 1990’s we started a database into burials across the Tablelands, because during our research we were always coming across old graves in cemeteries,” he said.

“Since then the law has

changed and we no longer have access to death registries, so now we have to do a lot of research by going through old records or by chatting to people who may have grown up in the area.

“In the past 30 years we have restored or placed a plaque on a lot of unmarked graves where there was no headstone.”

Mr Ray said some of the restoration also takes place where bodies are not buried in cemeteries but in hidden gorges and gullies across the Far North.

“We have also done a few

cemeteries where we made sure that every grave was marked including The Watsonville cemetery and the Stannery Hills cemetery where there was over one hundred unmarked graves.”

“We would also like to continue putting up plaques in other cemeteries.

“Many of these cemeteries are remote and the burial files for the location of individual graves has been lost over the years, but by placing a plaque with all the known burials at the entrance of the cemetery, at least our pioneers are being re-

corded.”

Mr Ray said that they are now working at the Mt Garnet cemetery.

“We are now doing a lot of research and work at the Mt Garnet cemetery where there a still unmarked graves that we know nothing about,” he said.

“If anyone has information on old ancestors that are buried at Mt Garnet we would love to hear from them.”

New exhibitions for art lovers

Leanne Kemp, Chief Entrepreneur of Queensland surrounded by local agricultural innovators at Krista and Rob Watkins Natural Evolution Foods factory in Walkamin.

THE Chief Entrepreneur of Queensland visited the Tablelands last Tuesday, September 22 and made her rounds to local businesses looking to better their business.

Leanne Kemp not only travels to all regions of the state to inform and inspire businesses but she also runs a highly successful global enterprise.

Mrs Kemp spent her morning session speaking to a wide variety of entrepreneurs in Atherton, the afternoon was hosted at the Natural Evolution Foods factory in Walkamin where many agricultural innovators were invited to attend.

The last session of her visit was a lively Q&A where Mrs Kemp went back and

forth with curious Tablelanders and answering their questions Co-Chair for Startup and Innovation Tablelands Christine Doan said that Mrs Kemp’s visit gave a lot of businesses and organisations clarity about the directions they need to go to succeed.

“Having somebody like Leanne up inspires people

and helps them understand what they need to do,” she said.

“She provided guidance and clarity for businesses that were unsure about where to go.

“Leanne is inspirational and brilliant but she is also hilarious, what more could you ask.”

ART lovers across the Tablelands are set to be spoiled as several new exhibitions open this month.

‘Survival’ is an exhibition of photo-artistic and sculptural works by artists Alison Faigniez and Gabi Sturman. The exhibition is in the Tableland Regional Gallery in Atherton from the September 29 until November 14 and is open from 10-2pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Climate change, endangered species and how humans value the natural landscape are of particular interest to Alison and Gabi.

Gabi has created sculptural representations of flora and fauna in singular works and collective installations. She works predominately with ceramics, recycled bronze and some mixed media.

Alison uses her photos from

travels in Australia and overseas as the foundation of fine art works reflecting the survival challenges facing wildlife and people.

The Old Post Office Gallery in Atherton also has a new exhibition opening on September 30.

Titled “From the Printroom”, The Tableland Region Art Society printing group will be showcasing an array of works and print techniques such as chine collie, key block cuts, reduction lino cuts, monoprints, stencil and hand printing on fabric.

The Old Post Office Gallery is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm and entry is free.

With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1 LESS than 12 months ago Australia suffered through the worst bushfires in recorded history. At the time global warming, climate change and habitat destruction were the subjects on everybody’s lips.

Since those record breaking fires, climate change seems to have been forgotten in the wake of COVID's destruction of livelihoods and businesses, which is sad considering we are only weeks away from a state election.

While some people may have forgotten about the fires (34 direct and 417 indirect dead) others may be thinking that COVID is a bigger issue.

While others would even go as far as saying that global warming is a hoax or nonexistent.

For the sake of this column let's say hypothetically that the hundreds of thousands of scientists from around the world are wrong. Let's say all of their data and experience and research is mistaken.

If these scientists are wrong then what is the worst that could happen?

What's the worst that could happen if we stopped putting plastic bags into landfill?

What about if we stopped digging up coal which is a finite resource and instead used wind, solar or hydro power?

What is the worst that could happen if we stopped pouring carbon dioxide into our atmosphere?

What's the worst that could happen if we stopped polluting our rivers and oceans?

What about if we started pushing for rainforests to being preserved?

What’s the worst that would happen if we stopped emitting greenhouse gases and instead used clean energy?

We would start experiencing clean air, water and food and healthy children.

If those that believe in climate change are wrong, the worst that that will happen is that we have created a better world for nothing.

On the other hand if we keep using fossil fuels, polluting our rivers, oceans and air what’s the worst that could happen?

If we keep chopping down trees and forests and destroying habitats, what's the worst that could happen?

If we keep making plastic and using oil and coal like it will never end, what's the worst that could happen?

What’s the worst that could happen if we keep using petrol, diesel, single use plastics and not recycling?

If we keep getting extreme weather events like last year’s bushfires and cyclones like Yasi or Winston what’s the worst that can happen?

ENTERTAINMENT Music lovers have a new home

MUSIC lovers across the Tablelands now have a new home to watch live music.

The Tablelands Music Lovers (TML) started in Kairi in 2004 at Loie McAdam’s house as a bunch of musicians who wanted to jam and see each other play live.

Since 2017 they have called the Orb in Atherton their home.

TML had to shut in March due to COVID-19 restrictions and then due to social distancing rules they had to find a new venue which could accommodate more people while still practicing social distancing.

Their first gig since COVID was in their new bigger home at the Grand Hotel on Main Street in Atherton on Friday night.

TML Secretary Ann Lowis said they could have only about 30 people in each room but with news on Friday afternoon from the state government about restrictions being relaxed from October 1 they are hoping to be able to invite more people more often.

“Friday night was a great night, for our first night back

it was a huge success with great live music and a great crowd,” she said.

“A massive thanks to our organisers, musicians, volunteers and of course all TML

“This week we will have to make a decision as to how many people we can fit in

with the new rules, what we would ultimately like to do is hold an event every Friday night but at this stage we are not sure when the next event will be.”

For only $10 music lovers got to see three local bands including Good Ol Daze, The Billy Turner Trio, Hell Western Crooked plus soloist Rhylee Wilkinson as well as

the opportunity to bond with fellow music lovers.

Bulls ready to buck

THE Great Northern Bull Riding Series is set to light up the night like never before this Saturday, with both the bulls and riders in tip top shape.

With the majority of rodeos across Queensland being cancelled many riders got the chance to lick their wounds properly for once and are now going to be riding at their best.

The same however can be said about the bulls as they have had no brave riders to buck off for 2020, making them more voracious than ever.

This will culminate in a true battle of wits and endurance with both bulls and riders at the top of their games, in front of a full and eager crowd The Great Northern Bull Riding Series Director Peter Brown is ecstatic about the upcoming event and anticipates an electric crowd off the back of the Savannah Summer Series on the Friday.

“Bull riding is a tough sport and they carry a lot of injuries week on week off purely because you’re not recovering,

you’re getting on bulls every second weekend,” he said.

“You will see the best of the best of the bulls and cowboys that are fit and willing to ride.

“Nothing has happened in this part of the world for a long time and to have The Savannah Summer Series one night and the Great Northern Bull Riding Series on the other, it’s a double whammy for Mareeba and the area.”

Dee Jaye Bux, the countries number one country music DJ has been booked in for the bull ride and will even play a short set on Friday afternoon to get the crowd excited for the main event on Saturday.

Preparations for the bull ride started in July, including the planning and implementation of their COVID-Safe plan.

Security will be active on the night to make sure no one is dancing and following all of the guidelines set down by the Queensland Government and Queensland Health.

“Now more than ever we need a pipeline of projects in the works to stimulate our economy, create jobs, improve road safety and ultimately improve the lives of Queenslanders by not being stuck in traffic losing valuable time and money,” Dr Michael said.

“The Kennedy Developmental Road and Highway has long been a problem in the far north.

This road needs a safety works package including bridge and flood immunity

improvements, so locals and trucks have an alternative when the Bruce Highway floods during the wet season.

Dr Michael said the Capitan Cook Highway was in urgent need of safety upgrades, including lane widening and additional overtaking lanes.

“The Captain Cook Highway is not only in need of safety works, but it is a major choke point for Cairns traffic so we want to see Cairns Ring Road project fast-tracked,” she said.

“This project, as well as

construction of all five stages of the Cairns Southern Access Project, will reduce congestion and make it safer for far north drivers.”

Dr Michael said RACQ would also like to see increased funding commitments for an inland road and freight productivity upgrade program as well as safe cycling infrastructure and road safety initiatives including a mass action program of low-cost, high benefit safety upgrades across the State to achieve a minimum 30 percent reduction in fatal and

serious injuries by 2030.

“We’ve lost too many lives on the State’s roads this year already. Small investments into works like wide centre lines, central and roadside safety barriers and intersection upgrades go a long way to helping make our roads safer for all Queenslanders,” she said.

“Queenslanders need to ensure they’re considering where their political vote goes and whether their candidate is willing to commit to improve Queenslanders’ lives and mobility options.”

Club spokesperson Lucinda Ross said it was up to young motorists, and their parents, to make sure they understood the level of insurance cover they needed before they hit the road.

“Getting your first car is a really exciting milestone for most young adults, but our research has raised some really big concerns around car insurance and the lack of understanding about what different types cover,” Ms Ross said.

“We’re seeing a lot of young drivers putting themselves at immense financial risk by driving uninsured or underinsured with two thirds

simply unaware of what CTP or third-party property damage insurance covers them for.

“Many young drivers purchase second-hand cars and think it just isn’t worth the cost of comprehensive insurance, so hit the road without anything protecting them from footing the bill as an atfault driver in a crash.”

Ms Ross said it was important parents had an honest conversation with their children about what insurance they planned to purchase and ensured they understood what was or wasn’t covered.

“If a young driver is at fault in a collision, and they don’t have at least third-party

property damage insurance, which covers the driver for damage to other vehicles or property that they hit in a crash, then they could be financially liable for the costs of the other party,” she said.

“This could see an 18 year old footing a hefty bill for the rest of their life if they hit a Ferrari, Lamborghini or other luxury car.

“Most people, regardless of their age, would struggle to handle a bill like that, which is why it’s so important mums and dads make sure their young drivers know the difference between CTP and other types of insurance before it’s too late.”

Drivers urged to check vehicles for faulty Takata airbags CAR manufacturers are urging regional and rural Australians to immediately check their vehicles to determine if they are affected by the Takata airbag recall.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive, Tony Weber, says thousands of vehicles in regional and rural Australia could be affected by the re-

“Many of these vehicles will be driven by farmers and people in support industries. These drivers are the economic backbone of rural Australia and may well be travelling long distances every day. It is vital they are able to do so safely” Mr Weber said.

It got him to thinking how could they utilise all of their produce without letting it go to waste.

Growing up on the farm Aaron and Jacks mum used to make everything out of bananas including banana muffins, pancakes, smoothies, even banana daiquiris.

But Aaron said their favourite was her banana Nice-Cream, “The reason it’s called NiceCream is because technically it’s not iced cream, in fact there is no dairy in our Nice-Cream,” he said.

“It was her Nice-Cream or it was nothing, because she would never buy us ice cream.”

“Our products stem from a desire to produce a product that embraces all our bananas, regardless of how they look,” Aaron said.

“Our Nice-Cream was conceptualised and created by my brother Jack, who loves to be creative and resourceful with the produce we grow.”

Three months ago the brothers launched the ‘The Banana Story Co’ Nice-Cream in chocolate, cinnamon, peanut butter, coconut and banana and vanilla flavours.

“We now have our products in about 20 different outlets throughout North Queensland all the way from Proserpine to the Tablelands and into Cairns,” “We launched right in the middle of COVID and we have just come out of winter but the feedback has been amazing so we are very optimistic coming into summer.”

The brothers have also just planted vanilla and cocoa on the family farm.

“Eventually we would like to have as much as possible grown here on our own farm that we can use in our NiceCream,” Aaron said.

“We value health and wellbeing and supplying fresh food.”

A TABLELANDS cane farmer has taken out the award of Outstanding Canegrower for the 2019 season. Rajinder Singh from Singh Farming at Arriga averaged the highest tonnes of sugar per hectare for Tablelands growers supplying the Mossman Mill.

Mr Singh’s family started growing sugar cane in Gordonvale before he decided to expand and buy his own property on the Tablelands in 1989.

His Tablelands property is 266 hectares and in 2019 it produced 18.22 tonnes of sugar per hectare.

Mr Singh has put his win down to two key reasons.

“My farming practices have matured over a number of years and I’ve honed my skills, there are also good crops where I am at Arriga,” he said.

“There are about 10 to 12 top growers in the Tablelands and there wouldn’t be much difference between what I achieved and the next grower.

“It also comes down to how the weather impacts your particular farm.”

Mr Singh said he originally supplied sugar to the Mosman Mill and then when the Tableland Mill was established he decided to supply there. When the Mossman Mill became grower owned he decided to start supplying Mossman again.

“Being with an grower owned mill gives us bit more certainty and gives us the ability to value add,” he said.

“There wasn’t a lot of confidence in the marketing from some of the other mills, where as we now have Queensland Sugar (QSL) doing our marketing.”

Rajinder Singh was awarded the Outstanding Canegrower for the 2019 season.

“We now have more confidence in the ability to market our sugar; they give us a lot of transparency with their marketing.”

Tablelands Canegrowers presented the award to Mr Singh on Monday, September 20.

“It’s great to be recognised for our hard work and to have our performance recognised.”

Mr Singh said.

First Bull sale breaks records

A LOCAL cattle stud has proved the critics wrong by having a record breaking bulls and female sale on their property last week.

Telpara Hills, east of Wondelca, held their very first on property bull and female sale on September 18, with more than 300 buyers turning up in person and over 350 registered buyers online.

The sale was the largest single vendor on-property sale held in the north and attracted buyers from as far south as South Australia and even an online buyer from the United States.

Stephen Pearce from Telpara Hills said his family was thrilled with the result.

“It was a 100 per cent clearance, which was fantastic as it exceeded all of our expectations,” he said.

“Normally we send our cattle to Rockhampton or Roma, which is quite stressful on the

animals. This way we brought the buyers to us.”

On the day there were 96 bulls and 35 females up for grabs, the 131 lots grossed $1,507,000, with the Brangus bulls grossing $1,202,500 with an average of $12,526, including the top selling bull of $44,000, with a female selling for $40,000 for a half share.

Mr Pearce said some critics claimed that the sale couldn’t be done here in North Queensland because the buyers wouldn’t come.

“They said the market wouldn’t support us, they said the money wasn’t here and that the buyers wouldn’t know how to handle it, but we are glad to have proved them wrong,” he said “It’s really put the Tablelands on the map for great beef; it even has the potential to be the next King Island.”

Mr Pearce said one of the catalysts for holding the sale was the recent Better Beef Open Day held in August this year.

“Some of the northern buyers really backed us, which gave us confidence,” he said.

“When people buy bulls from down south they struggle to adapt to North Queensland conditions, we have created a special breed of Brangus that are bred for conditions in the north.

“A lot of buyers went away happy and a lot of buyers felt they missed out, which is a good thing because since the sale we have had a lot of follow up.”

Due to the success of the sale Mr Pearce said that they have decided to make the sale an annual event.

“Due to COVID and border closures, a lot of NSW buyers were online, so we can’t wait to see what happens next year when the borders are open.”

▶ 1 package active dry yeast ▶ 473 ml lukewarm water ▶ 1/2 tbsp kosher salt ▶ 4 1/3 cups all-purpose flour ▶ olive oil ▶ rosemary

Method 1. Combine yeast and warm water in a large bowl.

2. Using a wooden spoon add in 1 cup of the flour and then the salt and mix until combined. Stir in the rest of the flour, one cup at a time, until completely incorporated.

3. Cover with plastic wrap or a lid that is not shut completely. Allow to rise for 1 hour.

4. Do not punch down the dough. Lightly oil the bottom of a cast iron skillet and srinkle a good amount of flour on top of the dough and then cover hands with flour. Take all of the dough and shape into a disk.

5. Place in the skillet, cover loosely with a towel, and allow to rise for another 30 minutes and preheat the oven to 180ºC. 6. Drizzle a little more oil over the top of the bread, and slash the dough with a knife creating an X. Sprinkle with coarse salt and rosemary leaves.

7. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is a deep brown color.

School holiday basketball fun WITH school holidays kicking off last week kids got the chance to get into the hall and practice some basketball skills with the Holiday Hoops Program run by Mulungu Aboriginal Health Service.

Hosted on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week, the Holiday Hoops Program teaches kids simple basketball skills that can be practiced and implemented from a local park game, to

competition games.

Mulungu Corporate Services Manager Samantha Dooley said that this program not only keeps kids active and entertained but also helps them understand the importance of healthy living.

“We are using this holiday program to promote and provide health messaging through healthy eating, being sugar free, keeping active and the importance of

a regular visit to your local aboriginal medical service,” she said.

“As we know during school holidays kids can become bored, less active and more likely to eat unhealthy food.

“The program is about motivating our children to rethink what we put into our bodies and to build our community awareness on health issues.”

Atherton’s Sam Duck (above) was named runner-up in the Queen of the North ladies final on Saturday, while Atherton Golf Club member Phil Henricks was crowned King of the North.

Golfing Royalty THE finals of the Survivor Golf Series King and Queen of the North were played at the Atherton Golf Club on Saturday.

Eight players teed off in the early morning semi-finals to decide the top two positions for the men’s and lady finals later in the day.

In the men’s final, Atherton golfer Phil Hendricks won over Matt Velicki from Cairns to claim the King of the North title, while Cairns golfer Annabelle Hutchings defeated Atherton’s Sam Duck in the ladies final.

The Survivor Golf Series is all about giving amateur golfers the feeling of participating in a professional tournament. A putting tournament and chipping competition were also held on Saturday.

Triathlon success for local athlete YUNGABURRA local Megan Hendry (pictured) entered into her first triathlon six years ago on a whim, now she relentlessly trains and pushes herself in every event to see just how far she can go.

Megan discovered her love for triathlons in 2014 when she decided to enter the Yungaburra Triathlon that was happening just down the road.

What started off as a ‘why not’ decision has slowly cultivated into a burning passion for triathlons and pushing herself to see just what she can accomplish.

The idea of the three events combined into one is what got Megan excited as you can’t be good at just one leg of the race to be competitive.

“As soon as I finished that first sprint distance race that was it, I was all in from there,” Megan said.

“The challenge of the three sports is really what hooked me and the variety that it provides.

“Just because someone is a good runner, swimmer or cyclist doesn’t mean that they are going to have the advantage over everyone else.”

Since 2014 Megan has participated in a number of triathlons and was even lucky enough to participate in four in 2020, including the Cairns Ironman on

In 2020 Megan has participated in the Geelong Ironman 70.3, the Coral Coast Triathlon and the Olympic Distance Mooloolaba where she took out first overall in March.

“I’m one of the lucky ones that were able to race early in 2020,” Megan said.

“I had not a bad race down in Geelong I was pretty happy with my performance, I was in the top three for my age group in Mooloolaba which was good.

“I had a win at the local Coral Coast event coming out first overall being the top female.”

Last weekend’s IRONMAN challenge in Cairns was Megan’s fourth triathlon event of the year and she was happy with her placement despite falling behind in the run.

Starting off with a good swim and bike the heat got the best of her as she fell off during the run, however she is still very happy with her effort and placement.

“Overall I’m really happy it was very tough conditions that’s for sure,” she said.

“I finished in 5:08 so I placed second in my age group and fourth female overall.

“I led the women’s field into transition two but I just couldn’t quite hold enough pace to hold some of the quicker girls out.”
