Lopez embraces new opportunity IT was celebrations all round for Mareeba Rotary at their annual changeover event last weekend.

The local service club farwelled 2019-20 president Lenore Wyatt and welcomed in new 2020-21 president, Maree Lopez and her board of directors.

Lenore reflected on a successful year and thanked all the hard working Rotarians and friends of Rotary for their tireless efforts over the year and especially during COVID when the club, like many had to adapt to a new way of doing things.

State Governor visits Mareeba

MAREEBA residents got the chance of a lifetime after the Governor of Queensland His Excellency The Honourable Paul De Jersey AC was taken on a tour of the town.

His Excellency first stopped off at the Mareeba State School (MSS) where he got a front row seat to both the Auslan Choir and their Indigenous Dance Group before moving into the library to read to some eager young readers.

After his visit to MSS he stopped by the Golden Drop Winery where he experienced some of the best the north had to offer before his meeting with the Mareeba Shire Council.

While in the Council Chambers the Governor stated that he loves to get out into the regional areas of Queensland and spoke about Mareeba and its impact.

“I am delighted to be making my first official visit to the thriving town of Mareeba,” he said.

“To learn more about your Shire’s communities and to thank you for the contribution you make to Queensland’s prosperity.

“This part of the Atherton Tablelands is renowned for its fertile soils, open spaces, clear skies and bountiful produce, but it is also known for its admirable ability to adapt and innovate.”

After a quick trip to Lotus Glen Correctional Centre his Excellency was joined by past and current Mareeba Shire Council Mayors Tom Gilmore and Angela Toppin at the Mareeba Airport for the turning of the soil for a new hanger scheduled to be built.

TRC meets in Herberton

THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) hit the road last week for their first ordinary council meeting outside of Atherton.

TRC councillors, officers and the Mayor met at the Herberton town hall to go through the August agenda as well as take a walk through the town.

Mayor Rod Marti said it was important that council get out of the office see other parts of Tablelands.

“These communities through amalgamation feel disenfranchised, so this is an opportunity to have a meeting in

the smaller towns and then after the meeting all councillors will do a tour around the town.”

On the agenda was a request from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to endorse the roads that they had selected for upgrades for a bicycle route.

According to council documents “The Far North Queensland Principal Cycling Network Plan (FNQPCNP) is a Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) transport planning document, which provides a vision for the principal cycle network in Far North Queensland,” “The plan was recently re-

viewed and this report requests Council endorsement of the updated Priority Route Maps relevant to the Tablelands Regional Council local government area prior to publication on their website” Mayor Rod Marti mentioned

that he had reservations about approving the plan without any community consultation.

“This is how the state government deals with things, they send it to the council and if the council endorses it then they can tick off community consultation as they are not going to talk to anyone else here except council,” Mr Marti said.

“As a cyclist I think some of the roads shouldn’t have cyclists on them, if they put in a 2 metre bike lane, then OK. But TMR aren’t going to spend money on that.”

“There is a section of the Gillies that they have identified

as a potential bike network; it’s crazy if they think that will be safe for cyclists.”

Despite Mr Marti’s misgivings about the TMR plan the proposal was passed unanimously.

During the meeting Cr Kevin Cardew brought up the topic of paying creditors within 14 days as opposed to 30 days. During the COVID crises council had been able to get payments to creditors and contractors down to seven days.

Cr Hodge asked if payments terms could be brought down to 14 days, which was passed unanimously for the short term,

dependant on the results of a report from the finance department.

Other items on the agenda that were passed unanimously was the demolition of toilet blocks in Ascham and Grigg Streets in Ravenshoe.

Council also declined Atherton RSL’s request to credit rates paid and exempt future rates and charges for their property at 7–11 Railway Lane in Atherton.

In a written statement TRC wrote “The TRC supports the work of the Atherton RSL but believes this request is not in the interests of the wider community.”

MSC moves forward on two big projects AT last week’s Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) monthly meeting a major tender was awarded while another major tender moved a step closer.

Council had invited tenders to undertake the refurbishment of the existing Jum Rum and Jungle Walk Walking Trails in Kuranda. The Tender was awarded to Contour Works Pty Ltd for the sum of $365,655.00 According to council documents “The Jum Rum & Jungle Walk walking trails are adjacent to the Kuranda township and provide tourists and locals with an opportunity to experience the relaxed surrounds of the rainforest at their leisure. The trails provide connection to the Barron Falls Walking Trail (currently under construction).”

Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said after the meeting “The trail is about 20 years old and the new work will complement the ongoing works that are currently taking place at the Barron Falls Walking Trail,” she said “We are making improvements to make sure that people

aren’t slipping, it’s a very poplar trail in Kuranda so it gets a lot of use.

“As a council we need to make sure that it is still an attraction for locals and visitors and to make sure it’s a safe attraction.”

Most of the works will include refurbishment of steps, handrails and the laying of asphalt.

“The walking trails around Kuranda are just breath taking,” Mayor Toppin said.

“While Kuranda is not buzzing with tourism at the moment The MSC is still committed to making it a great attraction.”

Also at last weeks meeting council decided to keep moving forward with the tender process for the refurbishment of the Cedric Davies Community Hub. Tenders closed on July 14 and to allow the works to commence as soon as possible, Council decided to delegate authority to the Chief Executive Officer to approve the contractor.

The proposal for the Chief

Executive Officer to enter into negotiations and finalise the contract for refurbishment of Cedric Davies Community Hub design was passed unanimously.

In December 2018 Council acquired the existing Mareeba Bowls Facility and decided to undertake refurbishment works to develop the new Cedric Davies Community Hub. Since then Council has called for modifications to the main building to cater for community services and training activities, a space for community events and recreational activities and also provide space for a multi-faceted library service and a synthetic covered bowling green.

Mayor Angela Toppin said that “We are looking at a new library that will be spacious and also will have room to grow, there will also be community facilities for functions and training rooms.”

“We are probably looking at moving the library either at the end of this year or early next year.”

“Last year while running for Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) I saw a lot of things that needed to be done,” he said.

“So when I had an opportunity, I put my hand up for the labor government and I was endorsed.”

Mr Hodgkins said that he believed that economic recovery post COVID was one of the biggest issues facing Hill.

“Delivering a unite and recover plan to the community is very important to ensure that Queenslanders are kept in jobs, we also need to support local businesses to help with the recovery strategy,” he said “I have a lot to offer, I have lived on the Tablelands for over 40 years and I have some ideas that I believe should be pursued that are not being pursued by the current local mem-

ber.”

Mr Hodgkins who lives in Yungaburra is married with two girls and three grandchildren, said that he is a professional artist and is also well known in the local music industry.

“My wife and I own a small business which we have grown and I’m also the President of the Tablelands Folk Festival.”

Mr Hodgkins said that the current policy of keeping the Queensland border closed is a good thing.

“Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has done a great job with the border closure, protecting our health and keeping us safe from COVID,” he said. “If COVID ever got loose in Hill it would be devastating, it’s disappointing that several members in parliament want the border open.”

Ms Neal who has been working on the cape for the past 7 year as a youth program manager working towards Aboriginal advancement said that the area has been neglected for a long time.

“If we don’t address youth crime now we won’t have a nice country in a few years.”

Ms Hanson said that she met Ms Neal about 4 years ago while on a fact finding mission across the cape and the two of them bonded over the mutual agreement for tough love on youth offenders.

“I went out to Doomadgee where Brettlyn was working with Aboriginal kids and I liked her approach, she is all about tough love,” Ms Hanson said.

While in Mareeba they commented on their youth crime policy saying that peopled need to be accountable and that “if you do the crime you need to do the time”.

When asked about the proposal of raising Australia's minimum age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14, Ms Neal said that if the age of kids who can’t go to jail is raised then the parents should be sent to jail with the kids.

“If kids go to jail with their

parents; they will be pulled into line pretty quickly by the parents,” Ms Neal said “I’ve been working in these communities for years and they reoffend straight after they are let out of detention, “Kids these days are running rampant on the streets and there is no fear of anything, their parents are not reining them in, there has to be a fear factor.”

Ms Neal said that one of the issues of youth crime is that children are committing crimes instead of going to school. “If you give the parents the choice of school or jail the parents will send the kids to school,” she said.

“Someone needs to be held responsible.”

Top health CEO resigns THE CEO of one of Far North Queensland’s top health bodies has resigned after being in the job for just over two years.

The Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) is now recruiting for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), after the shock the resignation of CEO John Gregg.

NQPHN Board Chair Nick Loukas said the board and staff extend their thanks to Mr Gregg for his hard work and dedication to helping northern Queenslanders stay healthy.

“I recognise the significant contribution that John has made to NQPHN over the last two years, and that the reforms made under his leadership would not have been possible without the considerable effort and focus by John and his team,” Mr Loukas said.

“John’s continued commit-

ment to the wellbeing of northern Queenslanders and his understanding of primary health care in rural environments will be missed.

“I know the NQPHN Board and staff join me in wishing John all the best in his future endeavours.”

Lotus Glen comes out of lockdown LAST week correctional centres across Queensland including the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre near Mareeba went into a state-wide lockdown after a Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) trainer in Brisbane tested positive for COVID-19.

Late on Wednesday night Queensland Corrective Services placed all the state’s correctional centres into lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Then on Thursday morning QCS made the decision to reopen Lotus Glen and the Townsville Correctional Centre while all other correctional centres in Queensland remained in stage 4 lockdowns.

Deputy Queensland Premier Steven Miles said the trainer had not been in prisons, but had been training correctional officers.

“We can’t identify a clear link with the Detention Centre, however this person lives in

Forest Lake and works in Wacol, both locations where other cases in the cluster are known to live in or work,” he said.

The chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said contact tracing was underway to determine the origin of this latest case.

“They haven’t been to the Youth Detention Centre … we now have to go backwards and try and work out where he might have contracted it,” Dr Young said.

It comes as Dr Young warned Queenslanders that there was likely to be further community transmission.

“It’s a small cluster, but it’s a risk,” she said.

“I will not be surprised, and I’m actually expecting to get more cases, but they are small numbers.”

As of print deadline on Monday Queensland had 28 active COVID-19 cases.

Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, KAP candidate for Cook Tanika Parker and Local miner Ron Reddicliffe go over the plans for the proposed new road.

Back to the drawing board for KAP FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has turned an old plan into a new plan as he revisits the idea of a road from Mareeba to Cairns, completely bypassing Kuranda.

Mr Katter said the idea was first floated over 30 years ago when the then Mareeba Shire Councillor and Member for Barron River Mr Martin Tenni spoke with local miner Ron Reddicliffe Mr Reddicliffe said he was approached by Mr Tenni 30 years ago to find an alternative road from Mareeba to Cairns.

“I was first consulted about this idea over 30 years ago; it should have been built then as it would have solved a lot of today’s problems.”

According to Mr Katter the new road would start near the

Davies Creek Bridge and would come out at Reservoir Road or near the Cairns CBD. “There would be homes starting to pop up around Davies Creek as people would want to live on the Tablelands and commute to Cairns,” Mr Katter said.

“There would be new dormitory suburbs popping up on the Tablelands between Kuranda and Mareeba.”

Mr Katter said his preliminary costing’s have shown the road would cost about 1700 Million dollars (1.7B).

“Currently we can’t move cattle and produce in big numbers down the Kuranda Range,” he said.

“We have had thousands of meetings about this and nothing has been done by the current

state members.”

“We should have done something then, when Mr Tenni was around but instead we have to do it now.”

It’s expected the new road would cut the Mareeba to Cairns trip to about 20 minutes.

“At the moment the Kennedy Highway travels north and then south, this new road would be a straight line to Cairns,” Mr Katter said.

“If you put this road in the gulf and the upper cape could be opened up and if we get a deep water port at Yarrabah this would cut 700 kilometres off the trip instead of going to Townsville.”

KAP candidate for Cook Tanika Parker said “Instead of a band aid fix which we keep getting from the southern parties,

this is a solution,” she said “We are not a bunch of gunnus, there is an absolute determination to make this happen.”

MR Katter claims that engineers at the Department of Transport and Main Roads are currently going over various plans and working on their viability including looking at a tunnel to bring the road out near the Cairns CBD, or an alternative route using the current Ergon track.

In 2003 the Queensland State Government received a report titled “Planning for the upgrade of the Kuranda Range road” by Paul Jones. The report predicted that the road that links Cairns with Kuranda would reach capacity sometime between 2009 and 2015.

Stage 1 of new Atherton Hospital complete THE Atherton Hospital is well underway with their redevelopment project after stage one was finalised last Friday.

Stage One saw the construction of a new Community, Allied and Mental Health building, a new helipad, new internal roadways and parking for staff.

Nearly all of the construction done on the redevelopment was done by local contractors and suppliers within a 125km radius of the hospital.

More than $30 million in work has been given to the local contractors since the construction began last year.

“It has been a welcome source of revenue for the community but it has also provided opportunities for training,” he said.

“Over 1700 hours have been completed by new apprentices on the project.

“More than 800 hours of work provided to indigenous workers so far.”

Atherton Hospital Director of Nursing and Midwifery Dr Ann Aitken said staff are excited about moving into the new

Community Allied and Mental Health Building.

“The new building features dedicated video conferencing rooms to enable telehealth appointments and has a contem-

porary environment for allied health services with a rehabilitation gym,” she said.

“It has been purpose built to meet the needs of community health, allied health and mental

health staff and clients with contemporary consulting spaces for local and visiting clinicians.

“About 50 staff will transition into the building from the Primary Health Centre in early

September with services to begin operations on September 7.”

The overall redevelopment of the Atherton Hospital is expected to be completed by late 2022.

Drive through COVID testing open FARM MACHINERY REPAIRS

The new drive through COVID-19 testing clinic is now open in Mareeba at Borzi Park.

FOLLOWING on the back of a new COVID-19 case in Cairns, Mareeba residents are able to get tested for COVID-19 from the comfort of their own cars with a drive through clinic that opened last Friday.

The clinic is being hosted at the Borzi Park Band Hall from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 3.30pm.

Nursing and Midwifery and Facility Manager, Ross Clarksmith said that the testing has been set up to rapidly respond to increased demand for testing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Testing is important to keep us all safe,” he said.

“The more people that are tested, the sooner we will be able to act if there is a COVID-19 transmission within the

community.

“This gives us a better chance to shut down an outbreak.”

The clinic is free but appointments are mandatory and everyone being tested is instructed to isolate until their test results are available.

GREEN thumbs from across the Tablelands will be converging on Herberton this weekend for the 74th Annual Flower Show.

The show which started at the end World War 2 is one of the longest running flower shows in Australia.

Secretary of the Herberton Garden Club Pamela Egan said there will be more than just flowers on display.

“We will also be having a local ladies choir performing on the Saturday afternoon, a garden hat parade, morning and afternoon tea as well as a photography competition.”

The show which is held on both days across the weekend at the Herberton Shire Hall has entrants from right across the

Tablelands as well as gardeners from Cairns travelling up to enter into the 100 different categories.

“Last year we had over 1000 entries, we are hoping to have just as many this year, we’re hoping that COVID hasn’t scared people away,” Ms Egan said.

The annual Flower Show is run by the Herberton Garden Club who are also looking for new recruits to join their club.

“We need more help with our club, when we are not planning the Flower Show we help with the Herberton town gardens, with weeding and planting.”

“We meet on the second Wednesday of every month where we look at other members

gardens.”

While gardeners and green thumbs will be looking at plants and flowers there’s also a photography competition happening at the same time.

Ms Egan said that the photos don’t need to be of flowers “So far we have had photographic entries of hamburgers, cars, flowers and birds,” she said “It’s an open competition for adults and juniors, who can submit photos of whatever they like.”

Tablelands Regional Mayor Rod Marti will be presenting awards and prizes at 12 noon on Sunday.

Police out in force for Road safety week

LAST week was Queensland Road Safety Week and Queensland Police Service (QPS) together with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) were promoting safe driving practices.

Across the week officers from the Road Policing unit were out and about conducting high visibility mobile and static enforcement activities focusing on drivers committing the Fatal Five-related and dangerous driving offences.

On Tuesday, August 25 Acting Inspector Greg Giles and members of the Tablelands Patrol Group conducted random vehicle inspections as well as drug and alcohol testing on the Kennedy Highway just outside of Mareeba.

“Each year we promote road safety week and each day we

focus on a different offense and today it’s all about road worthy cars and seatbelts,” Mr Giles said.

“Today we are inspecting cars to make sure they are mechanically sound, checking tyres and also making sure that caravans and trailers are not too heavy for vehicles, “When it comes to infringements speed is probably the major offence we see on the Tablelands as well as distracted drivers.”

Senior Constable Aleda Day who is the district crime prevention co-ordinator said that drink driving was also a serious issue on the Tablelands “Over the weekend we detected a number of drivers who were drink driving including one driver who blew a reading of 0.111 per cent BAC,” she said. “We also charged a 16 year old for drink driving on an uninsured unregistered motorbike; it’s just very frustrating for police.”

Theresa Whiteing has resigned after 15 years working as the Lifeline Mareeba Manager leaving behind a long lasting legacy.

Leaving Lifeline with a legacy LIFELINE Mareeba will be losing a valuable family member after Manager Theresa Whiteing decided to resign after 15 years of service.

Theresa was approached to work for lifeline many years ago while still working in a local retail shop.

She accepted the offer and hasn’t looked back, becoming a shining example to those who volunteer at lifeline and members of the community alike.

Over her long stint as Manager at Lifeline Mareeba Theresa has only fond memories and she “cannot put them down to one particular memory.”

“I love what I do and I love my wonderful customers but I have to take a little bit of time out for me now,” she said.

“I’ve been so fortunate to work with so many amazing

people in the community and people that you would not normally meet in retail.

“They become long-time friends and family members, these people that I would even have in my home, they are just wonderful.”

Theresa counts herself as the lucky one meeting so many people from different backgrounds and walks of life often even becoming friends.

“I must say that I am only one part of an extra ordinary team of people that I have around me, they are the ones that have made Lifeline Mareeba the success that it is,” Theresa said.

“One of my great highlights has been working with Flexichoice, I’ve been able to provide a place for people with different abilities to come and be included in the community.

“Being here has taught me how to grow and get outside of my comfort zone.”

Mareeba Lifeline Shop Assistant Sarah Mirarchi looked back on the time she spent with her role model, Theresa and had many good memories.

Sarah has been volunteering her time at the Lifeline Mareeba since she was still in high school seven years ago, only the recent four years has she been paid.

“She’s just taught me so many things, she’s always putting you first and she’s just an amazing woman,” she said.

“Without her none of this would be possible, she’s a massive part of the community.

“I always look up to her and she is always teaching me life lessons.”

School goes yellow for Daffodil Day

COVID-19 means we have to do things differently this year, so the students and teachers at Mareeba State High School got dressed in yellow last Friday in support of Daffodil Day. As COVID-19 is still a very real threat there was not any official merchandise available so wearing yellow became the way to celebrate in 2020. $200 was raised by the students and staff.

CONSTRUCTION is underway on a new tourist attraction in Lakeland in which Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott hopes will become the new ‘Gateway to Cape York’.

The $1.2 million project at Lakeland on the Mulligan Highway will provide new tourism infrastructure to welcome visitors to the Cape York Peninsula.

Once completed the Gateway to Cape York will feature an iconic “gateway,” a purposebuilt traveller information centre, a rest stop area and an interactive sculpture park that will showcase communities from Cape York.

“An important aspect of the project is highlighting what makes the Cape so historically, culturally and ecologically unique and then educating visitors as to what they can do to help us preserve and conserve this spectacular part of the world,” said Mayor Scott.

“This is an exciting project in the ongoing improvement of access to the Cape. The many supporting communities of the region see this as a key catalyst to inform and direct visitors here.

Twelve jobs are expected to be created over the construction period for the travellers information centre, with more jobs created during the construction of the sculpture park.

It’s hoped that phase one of the project will be completed in time to welcome visitors driving through Lakeland to attend the Cooktown and Cape York Expo being held between June 11 to 20 next year.

State spends 70K fighting wallabies IN documents obtained exclusively by The Express it has been revealed that the State Government spent nearly $70,000 fighting a wallaby relocation program.

In October 2017 Shai Ager heard about the number of wallabies that were being killed in and around the Captain Cook Highway near Trinity Beach and started the Agile Project. The aim of the project was rehabilitating injured wallabies and relocating some of them away from the highway.

The DES initially awarded the Agile Project a relocation permit, but a couple of days before the relocation started DES retracted the permit, claiming it was awarded “erroneously.”

Shai then took DES to Queensland Civil Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) fighting the reversal of their initial decision.

Being a not for profit group Shai ended up representing herself, standing up against a barrister that had been hired externally by the government.

On May 1, QCAT found in favour of The Agile Project, over the refusal by DES to allow the relocating of a large number of agile wallabies from the Trinity Park.

In Right to Information documents lodged by the Express, asking for the final amount spent by DES. It can be revealed that legal costs

came to over $66,600 dollars using barrister Kasey McAuliffe-Lake from Alfred Lutwyche Chambers in Brisbane.

This cost was for the use of external counsel only and does include any time spent by the government’s internal legal counsel.

Money that Shai said could have been better spent protecting animals.

“I wish they had spent that money saving animals rather than fighting us,” she said.

“In the time that we have been fighting DES, over 1000 wallabies have been killed by cars or dogs, DES could have spent the money protecting the animals.

“We won’t even spend half of that on relocating the wallabies and if they hadn’t fought us in court for so long the wallabies would have already been moved.”

Another criticism that Shai has levelled at the Department was the lack of communication.

“If they had of communicated with us and sat down and listened to what we wanted to do, we wouldn’t have ended up in court,” she said “I tried phone calls and meetings but they kept palming me off to other people and departments, communication was almost non-existent, “We even tried to get in contact with the Minister Leeanne Enoch but she never replied to us.”

In a written statement from the Department of Environment and Science.

“In 2017, the Agile Wallaby Project applied for a Damage Mitigation Permit to translocate a large number of agile wallabies from the Trinity Beach area in Cairns.

“As the environmental regulator, the Department of Environment and Science (DES) has a responsibility to ensure the safety and welfare of our native animals.

“The Agile Wallaby Project’s application was initially refused because DES considered it had not adequately addressed the requirements of the legislation and regulations.

“Subsequent information provided by the Agile Wallaby Project through the QCAT review process was considered

by QCAT in making the final determination, “It is standard practice for government departments to engage external providers such as barristers who have expertise in specific legal areas where matters are being contested.”

Funding for new Mareeba destination website

TOURSIM: The Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre has recently been awarded funding to build and run a new website to promote Mareeba.

Skyrail back in the air AFTER closing in May this year due to the downturn in domestic and international tourism, one of Far North Queensland’s most iconic attractions will reopen in time for the upcoming Queensland school holidays.

Skyrail will reopen each Saturday and Sunday from this Saturday, September 5 and also Thursday to Sunday inclusive during the upcoming school holidays.

“The past five months have been the most challenging period our family owned business has ever endured, and it’s been particularly stressful for our staff,” General Manager, Mr Richard Berman-Hardman said.

“Though we are grateful for the JobKeeper scheme and assistance we’ve received from the Queensland Government,

unfortunately, we haven’t received the level of financial support needed to enable us to open more than a couple of days each week, for now.

“Opening makes no real commercial sense as we won’t be making a profit for some time but the symbolism of reopening Skyrail is vital for our team and for the wider community.”

In preparation for the reopening of Skyrail a COVIDsafe plan has been developed.

As well as new check in, ticketing and queuing measures will also be rolled out to ensure social distancing.

“The thinking and resources we’ve deployed and the lengths we’ve gone to deal with COVID-19 are extensive, unambiguous and first rate. Everyone visiting Skyrail Rainforest Ca-

bleway and the ancient rainforest will feel very, very safe,” Richard Berman-Hardman said.

“We are understandably nervous about the future of the whole industry here in the Far North but, for now, we are Good to Go and excited to open the doors and welcome everyone back to the ancient rainforest.”

Mr Berman-Hardman said that Skyrail’s staff are eager to welcome back locals and North Queensland residents.

“Hopeful holiday makers from other COVID safe parts of Queensland and Australia will supply enough tourists to ensure the business can remain open on a limited basis until trading conditions improve.”

Island job up for grabs ONE of the most sought after jobs in the world has just hit market.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) is advertising for two caretakers to live and work on Low Isles which is about 15km east off Port Douglas.

Marine Park Authority Assistant Director Reef Conservation Actions Dr Mark Read said the caretakers played an important role in protecting, preserving and educating the values of the island.

“The caretakers live in paradise on a tropical island surrounded by the Great Barrier

Reef — but maintaining an island is hard work and remote island living means limiting electricity and water use which may not suit everyone,” he said.

“The caretakers are involved in everything from maintaining buildings and infrastructure including the solar power system and sewerage treatment system, liaising with tourist operators, cleaning toilets, managing weeds and grounds works, and counting bird populations like the pied imperial pigeons.

Low Isles is a Commonwealth-owned island, managed

by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The caretakers live and work on the island fulltime.

“We’re seeking people with a passion for sustainability and natural heritage, experience in maintaining infrastructure and who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and live remotely.”

Submissions must be lodged before 3pm on Friday, September 25.

THE Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre has recently received funding allowing them to develop and design a destination website to promote Mareeba.

Under the Small Business COVID-19 Adaptation Grant Program the Centre will now be able to construct a website catered to tourism and appealing to local, interstate and international visitors.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) will match the funding awarded to ensure the new website is aligned with the region’s brand platform ‘See Great, Leave Greater’ slogan.

“With the impact of COVID-19 across our small community we looked at the best way to support the critical role we play in promoting tour operators, local businesses, events and general services in Mareeba,” she said.

“We submitted on the deadline with 91% of the potential funding already awarded and are super surprised and excited to be successful.”

Students ‘Klock up the Ks’ FOR the past 12 years students at St Thomas’ School in Mareeba have been raising money for the school of St Jude in Tanzania through a project they call, ‘Klocking up the Ks’ ‘Klocking up the Ks’ is St Thomas’s way of showing their support and raising money for the underfunded St Jude’s as it is one of the only schools in Tanzania that offers both primary and secondary education.

The school was founded in 2002 by Australian Gemma Rice and Dr June Canavan from Brisbane made it her personal mission to help raise funds for the school.

Dr Canavan visited St Thomas’s in 2009 and told the school about her plans to climb mountains to raise money for

the school a project she called, ‘Klocking up the Ks’.

She successfully climbed three mountains that year with two more set to go, but unfortunately on her way to Kokoda Dr Canavan’s plane went down in bad weather and all on board died.

Now the St Thomas’s Mini Vinnies has taken it upon themselves to keep Dr Canavan’s dream alive and host the ‘Klocking up the Ks’ event on their school oval.

St Thomas’s Year 3 Classroom Teacher Debbie Filippelli never thought that the ‘Klocking up the Ks’ event would grow into what it is today.

“When we first decided to raise money for the school via Klocking Up The Ks, we had

no idea that it would become an annual event at St Thomas’s,” she said.

“Not only does it teach the students about helping others less fortunate, but it gives our students a sense of community spirit.

“We love receiving correspondence from St Jude’s School telling us about the positive effect that our fundraising efforts have on the students and teachers.”

Currently the school has raised over $6000 since 2009 with all the money going to St Jude’s, the school now covers the cost of tuition, uniforms, books, stationary, transport, excursion and meals for all its students.

New all inclusive gardening group starts to grow GARDENING can have many health benefits for people with disabilities and now a new gardening group formed in Atherton hopes to give people with a disability the ability to do some gardening, get their hands dirty and raise some funds.

The All Ability Gardening Group has been going for just over a month now and is becoming more and more popular each week.

Originally the group was started for Matthew Barnard who has Autism, but over the past few weeks it has grown to about 12 regular members who meet every Friday to pot plants, make hanging baskets and plant

seeds with the aim of selling the plants for a small profit.

Atherton Show Society Event Co-ordinator Kylie Lang said the group is really for everybody.

“If there’s someone who wants to do some gardening or volunteer their time we would love to see them,” she said.

“We are open to retired or unemployed people dropping by to do some gardening; people of any ability are welcome.

At the moment the club only meets once a week, but Kylie said they are hoping to start opening on another day.

“As it gets warmer and we get more people turning up we

will expand to also opening on Wednesdays.”

Kylie said that all money raised will be put towards purchasing more equipment and supplies for the All Ability Gardening Group.

“With a variety of flowering plants, as well as herbs and vegetables to choose from, there is sure to be something for everyone. “ If you are interested in purchasing one of the creations or joining the group, the group meets at the gardening shed at the Atherton Showgrounds every Friday Morning from 9am to 10am.

Chair of the Committee Councillor Lachlan Bensted said Council is obliged to call for expressions of interest on a regular basis for advisory committees.

“We are seeking passionate community volunteers who would be interested in joining the organising committee,” Cr Bensted said.

“If you love getting involved in your local community, love giving back and making a difference, I encour-

age you to put in an application to be part of the fantastic band of volunteers.”

Cr Bensted thanked the existing committee members for their efforts and hoped they would put their hands up again to stay on the committee.

The Great Wheelbarrow Race Committee is an Advisory Committee of Council and is responsible for organising the annual event.

“The number of committee members will be limited, however if there is an overwhelming response from the community we will definitely call upon them to help out at the event,” Cr Bensted said.

“Volunteers are the engine

room of the event. Without the hard-working volunteers, the event would not be possible.”

“The Great Wheelbarrow Race is one of Australia’s most iconic and unique events and we are incredibly grateful to have the event in our Shire.”

The initial idea for the wheelbarrow race came from then Mareeba Mayor Mick Borzi 2004 as a way of helping the Tablelands and outback communities.

In 2019, 42 teams competed including St Joseph's Nudgee College in Brisbane who flew up for the race. The 2020 race had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 closures.

Councillor Bensted said while this year’s event had to be cancelled due to COVID-19, it gave the committee a well-earned break and time to reset and refresh.

“While the committee is planning to go ahead with the event next year, we have to be mindful of COVID and how the event may look if COVID is still impacting on community events,” he said.

CLUB NEWS Rotary International President Elect Holger Knaack, member of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany, sees opportunities for Rotary to change and thrive.

The 2020-21 Presidential theme, Rotary Opens Opportunities, encourages Rotarians to create opportunities to strengthen leadership, put service ideas into action and improve the lives of those in need.

Mareeba Rotary is taking up the challenge and embracing change to expand and thrive. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, members adapted, moving to online zoom meetings to connect.

Meet the Members sessions allowed the club to experience online fellowship. Members chose themes and charities close to their heart, to receive a donation and present to the rest of the club about.

While these virtual events were enjoyable, members were relieved to resume meetings at our Mareeba Leagues Club headquarters, with the relaxation of physical distancing requirements.

Our changeover celebrations took place on Saturday, August 22. We celebrated the achievements of outgoing President Lenore Wyatt and welcomed incoming President Maree Lopez to the helm and we also inducted a new member.

We are also doing our best to champi the Love Local campaign for Mareeba Shire – Our Shire, Our Community, Our Future initiative. As part of the Travel Local message, we plan to be tourists in our township and Community Services Director Kevin Davies is heading up the proposed club camping trip to Chillagoe, with dates to be confirmed. Certainly, members will appreciate the chance to engage in good, old fashioned fellowship.

Closer to home, our Rotary Foundation Director Margie Bestmann has coordinated a Mental Health First Aid Australia course.

The MHFA facilitators will arm our community with tools to assist anyone developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing problem, or in a crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

The first course, was held on August 27 to 28. It was fully booked out and we are now welcoming expressions of interest from the public for a second course. Mareeba Rotary is subsidising the course to make these skills accessible – cost of the course is only $50.

The Atherton Branch of the QCWA presented a check valued at $1000 to the Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade last week, the money will go towards purchasing much needed items for the Fire Station.

Celebrating Vocational Education & Training Success

Providing pathways to success ATHERTON State High School’s strong Vocational Education and Training Program is celebrating over 15 years of success.

Vocational Education and Training, otherwise known as VET, is learning that directly relates to getting a job. The practical and professional skills leant help students to achieve their potential and progress in their chosen field.

At Atherton High (ASHS) close to 700 students have taken advantage of School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs) running through the school for the past 15 years.

The successful program has seen students employed across a wide range of in-

dustries including retail, business, butchery, all areas of mechanics and construction, beauty and hairdressing.

In her ninth year in the role of Industry and Vocational Training Officer, Kylie Coleman said students all across the region are benefitting from the program.

“We have students who live across all areas of the Tablelands and we are fortunate to have great support from our business community,” she said.

“I’ve had kids employed in SATs at businesses as far afield as Mount Garnet, Ravenshoe, to Cairns and everywhere in between.”

Some of the program’s greatest supporters have

been Fresh St Market IGA – who have had over 100 School Based Trainees that have completed a Certificate III in Business, while Yungaburra Foodworks have had over 30 students participate.

MacDonalds, KFC, Subway, Cottage Café, Jason Cummings Electrical and Troys Coffee Lounge, are among other key businesses who have supported the program over the years.

Students who undertake SATs accrue points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

Many of them choose to do a Traineeship in Year 10 to give them a buffer of points in their QCE bank and take pressure off in years 11 and

The old Overall Position (OP) system which ended with last year’s cohort of Year 12s did not recognise VET, however under the new Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) system, a Certificate III contributes to a student’s graduating score.

A majority of part time jobs can be converted to a School Based Traineeship and employers are eligible for government incentives.

Atherton State High School offers many options in the VET stream and is fortunate to have many passionate VET teachers to deliver their courses.

These courses include a Cert II in Animal Studies, Cert

III in Business, Cert III in Fitness, Cert III in Early Childhood, Cert III in Aviation and a Cert II in Furniture Making Pathways which is delivered in their Industry Standard Trade Training Centre.

The school also partners with some external Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) who go to Atherton State High School to deliver Cert II Vet in Schools (VETiS) funded courses. While enrolled at school, all students are entitled to one free course using VETiS government funding.

The school also runs a Careers Showcase for Year 10 students which has many representatives from businesses and industries from

all over the North attend to present information on particular jobs.

This provides a valuable experience for students across the Tablelands to be given the opportunity to speak directly to the people who work in these careers.

Students from other Tableland High Schools are invited to ensure fair access to this opportunity for all.

The annual ‘Try a Trade Day’ will be held in the coming weeks at the ASHS Trade Training Centre.

This event is run by Construction Skills Queensland who partner with TAFE, to give students in Year 10 some real, hands-on experience in construction.

5. Store in the refrigerator and warm up slightly to drizzle or use for desserts.

For those of us that played eighteenth holes the winner with 81 gross giving him a 69 net was Kelvin Groves, it appears that him and David Welch just carried on their good form from last week as David was the runner up with 83 off the stick giving a 73 net. Mark Twomey came it third also with 83 off the stick giving him a 76 net, considering the day they were very good scores.

Athletes back on track THE Tableland Athletics club hosted the first Athletics Carnival in the state with competitors coming from all corners of Queensland and all manner of levels.

From local athletes to national medallists and even international medallists the day hosted over 150 athletes all getting out on the field and getting rid of some Covid cobwebs.

Normanton, Gold Coast, Proserpine and Rockhampton are just some of the places that these athletes travelled from for

the carnival.

Tableland Athletics Club President Andrew Ford said it was amazing to get so many talented athletes out and enjoying themselves.

“With our Covid safe plan we had in place some events were too difficult to do so we replaced them with other events,” he said.

“Normally our pentathlon would be the fifth competition of the year in North Queensland, but this year we’re first.

“Maybe more people will

join Athletics because they saw how much fun they were having.”

Because of the situation surrounding the carnival and all the rules they had to follow it wasn’t competition based and the athletes instead received certificates with their results.

The Tableland Athletics Club would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the Tablelands Regional Council for their continued support and supporting their carnival.

THE Southside Comets played host to the Mareeba Bulls on Sunday with the free admission, family fun day a hit with Cairns locals.

The Bulls came away from the day with all of the bragging rights with Remo Terranova’s Colts securing a 2-0 win. The Bulls adapted well to the windy conditions with the youth winning 3-0, the men’s reserves 3-1.

In the much anticipated match of the day at Walker Road the Bulls were coming off a 3-1 defeat to Edge Hill United the previous week and wanted to get back on track against the Comets.

The Bulls were on the score board early after a goal mouth scramble saw Damian Avolio tuck the ball home after just 10 minutes. The Comets however were determined to not let the Bulls dominate and were unlucky not to equalise on quite a few occasions.

The second half saw the Bulls reduced to 10 after Connor Bell receive his second yellow card resulting in the sending off, but the Comets failed to capitalise on the advantage and continued to squander numerous chance to

even the game. Solomon Island International Richard Fono put the game to bed when he was at the back post to slot the ball home from close range.

The match ended 2-0 to the Bulls with Coach Ang Tatti happy with the result.

“After we scored early we went to sleep for periods of time. The second half was better and we dominated with 10 players and that was very pleasing, the red card to Connor deserved we need to be more disciplined and not give away silly fouls,” he said.

“Ritchie was there again for us, he’s a real poacher in front of goal and he just keeps going all game. He is a huge asset to the team.”

In other results on Friday night the Ladies premier team made their game look easy as they brushed aside the Comets 10-0, the ladies reserves went down 3-0 in the only disappointment for the club over all. The Men’s second division played out a 1-1 draw with Edge Hill United.

This weekend the Bulls are at home to the Innisfail Cutters.

Targa to touch down ONE of the country’s biggest high octane, corner splitting races will once again be gracing the roads of the Far North with the TARGA Great Barrier Reef Race commencing this Friday.

Being held from this Friday, September 4 to Sunday, September 6 the race will see adrenaline chasing drivers from all over the country placed on local roads over the weekend with several legs of the race making their way onto the Tablelands.

The first leg of the race will feature some Tableland landmarks including a stage through Lake Eacham and up through the Gillies Range.

Leg three will feature most of the Tablelands with the drivers going from Kuranda up

through Malanda and the Upper Barron.

TARGA Australia CEO Mark Perry is very excited for this year’s event and said that the event will feature a lot of local talent on show.

“The field is made up of a lot of local talent this year which is actually great to see so many Queenslanders supporting the event,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of locals stepping up into the full competition and purchasing new cars for this event so they are bound to be crowd pleasers.

“We love coming to Tropical North Queensland because it truly isn’t like any of our other events, every day feels like a holiday.”

$600 horse wins big CONNECTIONS to Paniagua woke with a hangover on Saturday after the four-year-old bay gelding won the Cairns Cup on Friday afternoon.

Mareeba trainer Alex Malliff said he couldn’t believe how well a horse that he bought for only $600 has been doing.

“Every time we ask him to take a step up he does,” Alex said.

“I’m not even sure it has sunk in, it’s just been one big thrill.”

While Paniagua has seven owners from across the Far North celebrations in Cairns went into the early morning.

“We had already organised a party win, lose or draw as we wanted to celebrate his success right through the winter carnival.”

Alex said he bought Paniagua for 600 hundred dollars

because he had already trained his full brother Terrasaurus.

“He won 4 races, but due to health issues he was retired early,” he said.

“He had an abundance of talent and I just thought if he was half as good as his brother, he would be worth it.

Paniagua has now won six from six since his maiden win including the Guineas in Townsville and Mackay earlier in the year but things weren’t always so positive.

Alex said that before he bought him he had two starts in Toowoomba and was beat-

Spring racing kicks off with Mareeba Annuals

EAGER racegoers will head back to the track this Saturday with the Mareeba Annuals kicking off the spring racing season across the region.

With only 500 spots available the tickets went on sale at the end of July and sold out within three weeks and with no walk-ins allowed this year’s event will be exclusive.

Mareeba’s last race took place on Boxing Day last year and with many other races around the region being shut down during Covid, Mareeba‘s Annuals in one of the first

events back on the racing card.

Mareeba Turf Club President Rex Petersen is excited to host one of the regions first races after the Covid lockdown period.

“It’s really great because so many people have been in lockdown mode so it’s great to be able to put on some decent entertainment,” he said.

“I think people have a lot of pent up social energy because no one has really had the chance to get out and really let their hair down.

“Because of only 500 people

it will be really controlled and just a lot of people really enjoying themselves.”

Fashions of the field will still be running this year with $1500 worth of prizes up for grabs for the best outfits on the field come Saturday.

The Mareeba Turf Club has a COVID-19 safe plan in place that they will be enforcing along with social distancing requirements.

No walk-ins will be allowed this Saturday and patrons must present their ticket at the main gate on arrival.

“He has matured really well; he obviously likes his life here on the Tablelands.”

At the time of the race Paniagua was favourite paying about $5.00 making local punters very happy.

Alex said he really wanted to show his appreciation to the owners and to the residents on the Tablelands.

“I really appreciate the ownership group of this horse; this win has really repaid their loyalty,” he said “People always stop me on the street and ask me how he is going, he really is the people’s horse as everyone just loves him.

“We now are giving him a break in the paddock and we will give him a go in Brisbane towards at the end of the year.”
