WHEN Jilly Brown from Irvinebank decided her back wall could do with a bit of colour, there was no way she could have predicted that one small art project would become a thriving business with customers across the globe.

About three years ago Jilly cut up some tins in the shape of flowers and painted them. After posting her creations on social media her friends encouraged her to start selling her tin flowers at local markets, which then led to the on line store ‘Mrs Browns Blooms’.

Jilly says that due to Irvinebank be being so small, there’s

no organised recycling and all rubbish goes to landfill.

“I’m fundamentally opposed to landfill, so I thought is there something I can do with these tins,” she said.

“I'm a keen recycler and I started making flowers from empty tins as a way to brighten up the dust bowl which was my back yard.

“One thing led to another and I’m still making flowers from tin cans.”

The tins are collected from all over the Tablelands, they are then cut up and covered with enamel and rust proofing.

“I think what people like about them is that they can be placed anywhere, inside or outside.” Ms Brown said.

“I’ve done them for weddings, I’ve made poppies for ANZAC day and some people even place them on graves, because they can last forever.

“I’m very humbled at some of the things that people want my flowers for.”

Jilly says she is happy to collect old tins from people’s front gate, and there are drop off points at the Kreative Knook in Mareeba, Goodyear Community Services Tablelands in Atherton

and the Herberton Historic Village.

“I sell them at Wondecla and Mareeba markets and I have an Etsy on line store with about 75 per cent of my products going overseas. I’ve sent flowers to America, the UK, South Africa and Europe,” Jilly said.

“As long as people want to buy them and as long as there are tins that need to be recycled I will just keep doing it.

“In the past 3 years I have recycled and repurposed approximately 15,000 tin cans that would otherwise be in landfill.”

Katter office officially open

EVEN though the doors have been open for a few weeks, due to social distancing and conflicting schedules the official opening of Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter’s new office in Mareeba took a while to organise.

On Monday, July 27 Mr Katter and his staff held an official opening for local dignitaries and media.

On hand to help Mr Katter open the office was Hill MP Shane Knuth and singer Darryl Chaplain who entertained the guests and representatives from the Mareeba Shire Council.

Mr Katter said he is proud to open a new office in Mareeba.

“Mareeba is the centre of the Kennedy electorate and it is the production bench of the Far North Queensland economy,” he said.

Mr Katter opened his office after Member for Cook Member Cynthia Lui closed her Mareeba office and moved it to Cairns.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday announced that patrons visiting licensed venues in Queensland must stay seated to consume food and drinks.

“It’s an important step in helping people maintain appropriate social distancing,” The Premier said.

“The same number of people are allowed into venues, and you can still order food and drinks from the bar.

“We want Queensland business to be able to welcome back customers, but we need to work together to keep our community safe and our economic recovery moving forward.”

The changes came into effect immediately.

The Queensland Police Service said teams inspected more than 200 venues across the state on Friday night, with Health Minister Steven Miles saying authorities took a more educative approach on Friday night, given the short notice.

“But where there are flagrant, repeated breaches of those restrictions, that's when we apply fines," he said.

Mr Miles said further re-introduction of social distancing restrictions was not on the Government's radar.

VISITING tourists with an itch for golf will be able to get that and more after the Ravenshoe Millstream Country Club applied for a Material Change of Use at last week’s ordinary Tablelands Regional Council meeting.

The motion for the Material Change of Use was passed unanimously by council after the country club put forward the idea to council on June 19.

The approval means that the Ravenshoe Millstream Country Club will now be classed as a

Tourist Park with 6 caravan/RV sites, changing it from previous outdoor sport and recreation status.

Tourists will be able to come to the club, park their caravans/ RV, have some drinks, have a feed and play some golf all in the same area.

Ravenshoe Millstream Country Club President Gavin Wright is delighted that the motion was passed in council.

“We have been approached by several groups of grey nomad golfers for somewhere to

both stay and play,” he said.

“After that we looked at the club from a revenue point, the club is volunteer run and not-for-profit so we are always chasing a few bob to help the club.

“People generally park their caravans and have a look around the Tablelands; they go for a drive during the day come home in the afternoon have a few beers and play some golf.”

The project will not only provide traveling tourists a respite close to some beer and golf

but also inject much needed funds back into the local communities “People go touring around the Tablelands up through the gulf and come back down to the golf club, stay nearby,” Mr Wright said.

“So obviously the goods and services they need to their travels are sourced here in Ravenshoe.

Now approved, the decision on when to start development on the new caravan/RV spots falls on the club.

“Some people believe that there won’t be a sugar industry

in Mareeba in the next 20 – 30 years because water is becoming too expensive and valuable.

Farmers will have to start looking at something else.”

Early estimates are that George’s farm will get 8 bales to the hectare and that could mean double the profit he has been making from sugar cane.

“Even harvesting cotton is cheaper and more economical.”

BY PHIL BRANDEL GREEN cane fields across the region are slowly turning white as farmers start to experiment with growing cotton as either a rotation crop or as a replacement to sugar cane.

Long-time sugar cane grower and Chairman of the Tablelands Mill Suppliers Committee George Adil initially thought it was only going to be a rotation crop for his sugar cane but cotton

has turned out to be more successful than he originally hoped.

“I looked at some of the local trials and I put in a few plants to see how they would go,” he said.

“We were looking for a rotation crop because our yields were dropping off and the sugar price is pretty ordinary at the moment.”

George’s original test crop grew better than anticipated and this year he has expanded to over 12 hectares of cotton with some

surprising results.

“A lot of people believe that cotton is a very thirsty crop and down south where they don’t get the same rain we get, it is. But up here it uses less water than sugar cane and if we can sell some of that leftover water that’s more money in the farmers pocket,” George said.

“The late wet season has actually helped, cotton could turn out to be more profitable than sugar cane and there’s also the

Bridge works moving along with first concrete pour STEADY: The first concrete pour for the John Doyle Bridge Project commenced last Tuesday with the rest of the pouring to be completed at the end of the month.

Works are “moving along steadily” for the John Doyle Bridge upgrade in Mareeba with the first concrete pour being done last Tuesday.

The first two piers and the headstocks to the western abutment were poured last week with the rest of the pouring to be done in early August.

The new headstocks will support the new steel girders and concrete deck for the first two spans of the bridge which commence later this month.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin thanked residents for their ongoing patience and cooperation while the bridge remains closed to traffic.

“I thank motorists and residents for adjusting to the changed traffic conditions while the bridgeworks are underway,” she said.

“This is an important project that will increase the lifespan of the bridge, provide a reliable transport route and cater for residential growth in the eastern

area of Mareeba.

The John Doyle Bridge Project will return the bridge to its original design capacity and provide continuation for access of vehicles and pedestrians across the Barron River in Mareeba.

The John Doyle Bridge Project is funded by the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program and the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program.

The bridge is set to re-open in late September.

MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) has made a change to their planning scheme in the hope it will protect the proposed Nullinga Dam development area.

Mareeba Shire Council tabled the amendment at the July 15 Council meeting after the issue was identified by the Queensland Minister for Infrastructure and Planning.

The proposed Nullinga Dam is located approximately 55 kilometres southwest of Cairns and 24 kilometres south-southwest of Mareeba Under section 26 of the Planning Act 2016 Council was directed to amend the Mareeba Shire Council Planning Scheme

2016 to protect the proposed site of Nullinga Dam by the Minister.

The State Government endorsed a detailed business case for the proposed Nullinga Dam in August 2019. While the Queensland Government has decided not to proceed with construction at present, Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin welcomed the Government’s decision to take immediate steps to protect the proposed Nullinga Dam area. “The development area will be preserved in a way, as a strategic precautionary measure, including investigation and potential declaration of a State Development Area,” she said.

The new overlay would make all development, except for a dwelling house and associated outbuilding/s, impact assessable development within the Nullinga Dam development area.

“A key requirement of the planning scheme amendment would be to ensure any new development within the Nullinga Dam development area is limited in size and designed to be relocatable,” Cr Toppin said.

Subdivision to create any new lots within the Nullinga Dam development area would also not be supported by the planning scheme amendment.

Public consultation will be part of the amendment process.

TRC puts a halt on future community requests AT last week’s monthly Tableland Regional Council (TRC) meeting a motion was put forward for a moratorium on any new Community Projects Requests, essentially halting any new projects.

The motion was brought forward during the ‘Business Without Notice’ section of the meeting by Cr Peter Hodge, any projects that will take council funding and resources away from projects already In place will be pushed back.

A moratorium is a temporary prohibition of an activity and in council’s case, as of last Thursday they are refusing any new Community Projects Requests, including Councillor Community Projects Requests for 12 months.

Projects that are already currently under consideration

by Council and which are in the planning stages and projects including capital works that have already been endorsed or identified for adoption are exempt from the moratorium.

According to TRC Councillor Peter Hodge the reason for the moratorium is for council to get some “breathing room” and focus on the projects already in place.

“If we want to be really proactive and financially savvy we need to take some breathing room and get everything right,” he said.

“We need to spend time taking a strategic look at our community facilities and assets so we’re in a better position to assess future community requests.

“We need to consider and

decide on our priorities in a financially responsible way, so the moratorium is designed to allow us time to do the required work to achieve this.”

During the moratorium Council will be assessing a number of their facilities that they believe are not being used to their full potential and decide what the best course of action is to take.

The motion was passed unanimously by the new Council who has already made significant changes and continues to do so.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti said that council needs to focus on projects already in place.

“In our first year we will have to be really focused on

what council’s core business is and how we best utilise our ratepayer’s money to build infrastructure,” “While doing this we don’t want to be crowded by community requests for assistance with projects.

“There will be projects that will come in that have very little impact on Council and maybe we just have to make some approvals and such things that don’t incur costs.

“As a council we have to exercise restraint and this is what it looks like.”

The community will get an insight into council’s decision and their standing at their budget meeting this Friday, 31 July.

AT the last Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) meeting, Council set the wheels in motion on the possibility of finding a new cemetery for residents living in or around Kuranda.

The Kuranda Cemetery is expected to reach capacity within the next few years and Council has been investigating options as a way forward including calling for community feedback regarding a new resting location.

Located at 1300 Kennedy Highway, the Kuranda Cemetery is sited on 5.3-acre parcel of land and has provided a place

for the laying of residents since the early 1900's, with the earliest inscription dated 1910.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said Council has been investigating alternative options. “Council has identified four possible locations for a new cemetery, and we will be seeking feedback from the community on the proposed alternatives,” she said.

After a detailed analysis for alternatives, the only four potential locations available are – expansion of the current Kuranda Cemetery, development of a

new cemetery at Caroona Street, development of a new cemetery at Gregory Terrace and the development of a new cemetery at Koah.

“While the Koah site is the recommended option as the most cost-effective and provides the best long-term solution, the councillors wish to hear from the community before making a final decision,” Cr Toppin said.

MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) has given Melbourne developers, Croft Developments the go ahead to move forward to the next stage of their planned aged care facility at Haren Street in Mareeba.

The development application for the nursing home was approved at last week’s council meeting, with Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin saying there was a demand for an additional aged care facility in the Shire.

“I welcome this development with open arms given Mareeba has an ageing population with limited residential health care options close to home,” she said.

“The development will boost the local economy and create job opportunities for nursing staff, cleaners, cooks and other care staff to gain employment when the facility is operating.”

At the meeting Mayor Toppin said that the development had been on the drawing board when Tom Gilmore was still Mayor “and that it was good to see it finally getting off the ground”

The proposed development will include 120 rooms across five-wings, several communal lounges, activity rooms and dining areas in addition to doctor and nursing facilities, a library, hairdresser, café and chapel, two kitchens, office spaces and meeting rooms.

“We are not only a community with an ageing population but we also have a lot of people who want retire to Mareeba,” Cr Toppin said.

“When I came to council in 2016 seeking more residential aged care in our shire was one of our strategic directions, and the next step was an aged-care facility so we welcome this with open arms.

“The facility will also need staff, not only to care for the residents but in terms of cleaners and cooks, so it will also have a massive boost for employment in our shire.”

Director of Croft Developments, Graeme Croft said the new Mareeba aged care facility is a project that has been in planning for a while.

council and the Department of Main Roads for a while to get it all approved, now we are just finalising our building documentation and then we will go out to tender later in the year,” he said.

Mr Croft also said that his company chose Mareeba as it had been a site that was identified by the Federal Government as being an area that is underserviced by aged care services.

“The population of Mareeba is ageing rapidly and new services are going to be needed,” he said.

“Our facility will offer high care to residents which includes full nursing care to residents.

“It’s being set up so that residents don’t need to leave the community to access a high level of care.

“We are talking about registered nurses on site 24 hours a day for those people who can’t care for themselves.”

Building should start early next year, with about 60-70 contractors employed in the building process and there will be about 144 fulltime staff on site once the centre opens.

Tablelands property market going strong UNLIKE the rest of Australia, the property market on the Tablelands is stronger than ever with strong demand for rentals and property sales.

The average house price in Mareeba in August 2019 was $300,000 while now its $325,000 based on 112 sales over the past 12 months.

At the time of publication Mareeba had 8 properties available for rent and 190 properties for sale. The average price to rent a house in Mareeba is $350 PW with an annual rental yield of 5.6% and units rent for $290 PW with a rental yield of 6.7%.

Based on five years of sales, Mareeba has seen a compound growth rate of 2.8% for houses and 1.1% for units.

Atherton’s property prices are pretty similar with the average house price being $305,000 in August 2019 and $325,000 today.

Atherton has 11 properties available for rent and 207 properties for sale. Median property prices over the last year ranged from $325,000 for houses to $218,750 for units. On average rental prices in Atherton for a house is $350 PW with an annual rental yield of 5.6% and units are

$270 PW with a rental yield of 6.4%. Based on five years of sales, Atherton has seen a compound growth rate of 0.9% for houses and 1.3% for units.

However the news hasn’t been so good for Malanda residents and home owners, with the average price of a home in Malanda in August 2019, was $265,000 with the average price dropping to $260,000 today.

Paula Tieppo, who is the senior property manager at Mareeba Property Management in Mareeba, said that she has never seen the rental market so quiet in her 20 years in real estate.

“There is a very high demand for rentals at the moment we have never seen it like this before.”

Normally Paula would have 10 properties available to rent but at the moment she has one.

“The shortfall started about two months ago and due to COVID people don’t seem to be moving around as much.”

Principal Licensee Trisha Jackson from The Professionals in Atherton agrees that the rental market is very tight at

the moment.

“We don’t have enough properties; people aren’t moving due to COVID,” she said.

“There doesn’t seem to be enough investment properties hitting the market.”

Ms Jackson said that she currently has three units and one house available, but six months ago she had 12 properties available.

“People want 3-4 bedrooms, with two bathrooms and a lock up garage and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of them on the market at the moment,” she said.

“Hopefully the first homebuyers grant will loosen up the rental market are bit.”

Ms Jackson has also seen an increase in enquires from people down south wanting to get away from COVID and the rat race and have a tree change.

“We have had a lot of enquires from across Queensland who want to move out of the city and buy a property in FNQ,” she said.

“Even the more remote properties are being sold as people want to get away from the cities and get off the grid.”

THE Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to extend JobKeeper payments.

Chamber president Bree Hargraves said that the extension of the JobKeeper scheme will give business the support it needs to continue operating through the COVID crisis.

“For businesses, knowing the current scheme will be in place as planned, gives them confidence to continue with their plans. And now having this foresight of knowing it will continue gives them the ability to plan further ahead, which is exactly what they need,” she said.

“This extension enables businesses to keep their staff employed, allowing them to actively contribute to our economy as we all continue down the road of recovery.”

On June 21, the Prime Minister announced that the JobKeeper wage subsidy scheme would be overhauled and extended until March.

Over 960,000 employers have been given a flat rate of $1,500 a fortnight for each staff member they kept on their books during the coronavirus crisis.

But that eligibility will now be tightened. Under the original scheme, a business had to prove a drop in turnover of 30 or 50 per cent, depending on the size of the business, to get the subsidy for a full six months.

Businesses will now have more frequent turnover-reporting requirements, to prove ongoing financial distress.

The payments will fall again to $1,000 a fortnight, and $650 a fortnight for people working fewer than 20 hours, for the first three months of 2021.

The Federal Government

also announced that the Job Seeker supplement payments would be extended beyond September but will drop from $550 to $250 per fortnight from late September Prime Minister Scott Morrison said JobSeeker and JobKeeper are not do-nothing payments.

“JobSeeker and JobKeeper are payments that support people's incomes but are not designed to prevent them from going out and seeking work."

The JobSeeker payment replaced the former Newstart unemployment payment when coronavirus struck.

The Government effectively doubled the old Newstart rate, applying a $550 coronavirus supplement.

The revised JobSeeker program will allow recipients to earn $300 a fortnight before facing a reduction in their Government payment.

The program will be reviewed again before December and the Prime Minister said he expected a coronavirus supplement was likely to be continued into 2021.

People on JobSeeker will be required to apply for more jobs than required earlier in the pandemic and the PM has warned that failure to take a job means that people may risk losing the payment.

“So, if there is a job to be taken and a job that is being offered, then it is an obligation, a mutual obligation, for those who are on JobSeeker to take those jobs where they're on offer,” Mr Morrison said.

School choir to sing on the big screen

BY RHYS THOMAS THE Mareeba State School (MSS) Auslan Choir has been given the chance to get back on the big screen after they recently filmed their choir performance for Channel 10’s ‘Creative Generations’.

Creative Generations features state school students from all across the country performing in the biggest on-stage production of state school students in the country.

The 2019 Creative Generations production was the first time that MSS had been invited to attend and 16 students were able to go. This year they return for a second time with 28 students from both the state primary and high school.

Students showcase their talents whether it be singing or dancing and for the second time MSS Auslan Choir was selected to participate.

Due to COVID-19 however the students were unable to make the annual trip down to Brisbane for the production, however channel 10 said that the show must go on and selected MSS to film their performance and send it in.

The MSS Auslan Choir is a choir that is made up of students with hearing impairments and other students, they both sing and sign songs and have often been the recipients of a number of awards.

Mareeba State School Creative Generations Organiser Sabrina Fink was delighted that the kids got the chance to perform in the Creative Genera-

tions production for a second time.

“Getting involved in this production means a lot to the students,” she said.

“The signing choir makes performances more accessible to the community and that is very important to them.

“The kids love being a part of a team, they love doing Auslan, they love what they do.”

The MSS Auslan Choir got the chance to sign with the Brisbane Signing Choir during last year’s production and this year the schools signed together over skype so that Channel 10 could showcase the partnerships between the few signing choirs in Queensland.

The MSS Auslan Choir has been around since 2013 and was made due to the high number of children at MSS that are hard of hearing.

MSS Head of Inclusive Practices Pina Carroll said that the choir is open to all students for anyone interested to come and participate.

“So that the choir is more inclusive we open it up to all students to practice doing Auslan Choir,” she said.

“The students volunteer, they give up their own time to come down and practice.

One of MSS’s key learning areas now includes Auslan learning so students in grade five and six learn how to sign.

MSS Principal Hannah Simpson has done this purposely to ensure that the students who are hard of hearing or hearing impaired are not excluded.

“It is also for that population of kids that we want to come to school every day and be happy and learning and successful,” she said.

“Part of that is ensuring that their entire peer community are supporting them.

classroom signing to each other just to communicate.”

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin got the chance to look at the choir from the perspective of both Mayor and a school Principal.

“Firstly as Mayor I want to acknowledge the great work that Mareeba State School does

in terms of inclusivity, it’s just amazing,” she said.

“It’s an outstanding example and I acknowledge this wonderful initiative in our community.

“I am really proud about the that fact that these students from our shire are allowed this opportunity so thank you

Mareeba State School for persevering and making sure our students are included.”

Mareeba State School expressed their gratitude to the community for the overwhelming support they have been giving with the students being able to go to Brisbane last year, due to the community support.

Landholders sign up to extend cassowary corridors AFTER the recent deaths of three cassowary chicks on the Kuranda range local landowners are signing up to help with building a 100km rainforest corridor.

The residents are banding together to help cassowaries by signing up to voluntary conservation agreements that protects their land into the future.

Nature refuges are voluntary conservation agreements between landholders and the Queensland Government which conserves the lands natural resources while allowing compatible and sustainable land use.

The agreements also cover future landowners and land sales.

More than 115 hectares of rainforest could become four

nature refuges after property assessments by the Queensland Trust for Nature this week, and more landowners are currently in negotiations to sign the agreements.

The news comes in a year where there were 16 recorded cassowary deaths on roads across the Wet Tropics region, three of them in the Kuranda area.

Kuranda Conservation Community Nursery’s Jax Bergersen said a partnership with Terrain NRM and Queensland Trust for Nature was streamlining the conservation agreement process.

“The long-term goal is for nature refuges all along the existing world-heritage cassowary corridor.”

She said the world heritage rainforest was at its narrowest – just two to three kilometres - in the Kuranda region, and it was intersected by roads including the Kuranda Range Road.

“Linking world heritage rainforest areas with prime blocks of land is a way forward, along with the revegetation work that’s been happening for decades in this region,” she said.

Di Daniels owns 97 acres of rainforest land just outside of Kuranda said she originally bought the land to help conserve some rain forest for cassowaries.

“We moved in here 6 months ago to build something to live in whilst at the same time help the cassowaries,” she said.

“There are also lots of other animals on our property like ring tailed possums, pademelons, and wallabies.”

NAIDOC week grants open NAIDOC week 2020 is scheduled to go ahead in November after the annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Yungaburra artists get creative THE Yungaburra Village Artists now have several reasons to be excited as they get ready to show off their artworks in a new exhibition at the Tablelands Regional Gallery and also the opening of new their new mural in Yungaburra.

The Yungaburra Village Artists are a group of visual artists that live in and around Yungaburra.

The group is open to anyone regardless of age, gender and style, with the more established artists supporting and encouraging younger emerging artists.

The artists will be exhibiting their art in a new exhibition which spans a diverse range of genres and media including painting, printmaking, ceramics, woodwork and sculptures.

Lorraine Cross is one of the artists going to be exhibiting and said that most of the artists are inspired by the beauty

of nature in the local area “Art is especially important during the current isolation of COVID-19 and by having an exhibition of local artists, who have been inspired by their surroundings, is especially important to the community during these trying times,” she said.

14 of the Yungaburra Village Artists will have multiple works on display and on sale at the exhibition.

The YVA@TRG2020 is having a meet the artist’s session from 2pm to 4pm on Friday, August 7 with artists on hand to answer any questions, and the official opening by TRC Mayor Rod Marti takes place at 5pm.

The Tablelands Regional Gallery is on Robert Street Atherton and numbers inside the gallery will be managed according to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines.

Town mural paints picture THE exhibition is not the only thing that has got the Yungaburra Village Artists excited, with their large mural finally up in Yungaburra.

Tony Williams from The Yungaburra Village Artists said there was some controversy over the mural.

“Some of the locals kicked up a stink because council had given us permission and a grant to paint a new mural to cover up an old mural,” he said.

“The approval process took some time

and we actually finished painting late last year then Covid hit and the instillation was delayed.”

The Mural was mounted on July 15 and was painted by the whole group with each artist adding their own touches.

Tony said he is happy with how the mural has turned out.

“It turned out fantastic and it’s a beautiful piece of art which the residents of Yungaburra and all visitors can enjoy for many years to come,” he said

The Janggaburru Mural is named after the Dulgubarra-Yidinji name for the Silver Ash tree, which is abundant in the area and featured in the mural.

The scene is inspired by Frawley’s Pool and the native flora and fauna found along the Peterson Creek walking track.

“The painting took six weeks to paint and is now hung up on the side of the Yungaburra Community Hall.” Mr Williams said. “It will certainly be a talking point that is for sure.”

Save the quad bike group launches

A NEW group formed to "save" the quad bike in Australia has been launched after the big four quad bike manufactures announced that they would be pulling out of the Australian market.

Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Polaris all announced that they would stop supplying the Australian market after the Federal Government legislated that all bikes sold after October 2021 must have mandatory Operator Protection Devices (OPDs) Save the Quad in Australia

(STQBIA) founder, Craig Hartley, who has a motorbike dealership in Dalby, said that the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) who made the decision didn’t consult anyone who uses quad bikes daily for work.

“When the government legislated to add OPD’s to quad bikes, they didn’t actually listen to any professional advice.

They have now brought in this legislation that will increase operating expenses for farmers, and efficiency and productivity is going to drop.

“The best available scientific evidence was not used or listened to by either the ACCC or the National Farmers Federation when the decision to implement compulsory OPDs was signed off.”

In 2019 there were 16 quad bike deaths in Australia but Mr Hartley said that only four of those were farming accidents.

“Four of them were recreational quad bike accidents and the other 8 were side by side buggies that already come with OPD’s as standard,” “50 per cent of the deaths

already had protection and it made no difference.”

Mr Hartley said new laws had been based on a wrong interpretation of quad bike deaths, claiming the toll was inflated by fatalities due to misadventure, no helmets, alcohol and riding side-by-side vehicles without seatbelts.

“The ACCC had also failed to provide evidence of how the new measures would improve quad bike safety,” he said “A lot of the testing done by the ACCC was done on static machines; the problem has to

be fixed by the riders and the owners of the machines, “Motorbike dealers in rural Australia get 40-60 precent of their business from quad bikes, so that’s a lot of business and jobs gone.”

Mr Hartley has now launched an online petition and Facebook page with the aim to get the government to reverse the decision.

“We need rider training and compulsory helmets, lots of farm workers from overseas shouldn’t be allowed straight on a quad bike if they have nev-

er ridden one.”

“They should have to do some rider training, it’s about making people aware of safety standards.”

Mr Hartley likens the recent quad bike legislation to that of the live cattle export ban.

“This is kneejerk reaction and the government may have to use taxpayers money again to compensate all the motorcycle dealers across Australia.”

HEALTH authorities are blaming unsafe needle sharing amongst prisoners at Lotus Glen Correctional centre for a spike in Hepatitis C in the Far North.

According to the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) there has been an increased number of notifications of Hepatitis C identified in the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre in the second half of 2019, carrying through into this year.

A Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service spokesperson said “Work has been under way to better understand the epidemiology and cause of this outbreak.

“A multidisciplinary team approach is being taken in collaboration with Queensland Corrective Services in response to the increased incidence of Hepatitis C cases, including testing, treat-

ment and education.”

The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service has been working with other stakeholders, including Queensland Corrective Services and primary health care providers to raise awareness of possible Hepatitis C in the wider community.

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus that causes inflammation of the liver. It is one of the major causes of liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver failure. Symptoms can be mild or severe, and mild symptoms can include fever, tiredness and poor appetite, and more severe symptoms include nausea and vomiting, stomach pain, and yellowing of eyes and skin.

Health authorities in Cairns have recorded 61 newly acquired cases of the blood-borne disease to date in 2020 more than any other Queensland region.

A spokesperson from Queensland Corrective Service (QCS) said: “QCS, like all jurisdictions across Australia has a zero tolerance approach to needles and illicit drugs in our prisons. We are committed to protecting the safety and security of all staff, visitors and prisoners by doing everything we can to stop contraband like needles and drugs entering our correctional centres. Queensland Health is responsible for the provision of health care, including the identification and treatment of communicable diseases, in publicly operated correctional centres such as Lotus Glen,” they said “Lotus Glen officers work closely with Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) staff and Hepatitis Queensland to educate prisoners about Hepatitis C, encouraging

them to get screened, and managing their treatment, “QCS also use a range of protections in place prevent the introduction of contraband including illicit substances into the prisons.

“Protections include intelligence activities, searches of those entering the prison, and the use of Passive Alert Drug Detection dogs and scanning facilities.

Contraband, including needles and illicit drugs, pose significant risk to prisoners, officers and visitors to centres.”

CEO of Hepatitis QLD Katelin Haynes told the ABC that clean needles should be supplied to prisoners “People in prison have a right to quality health services, and everyone has a right to health services and we see needles and syringes as a health service.”

Simpson calls it a day after 56 years in media

AFTER 56 years as a local journalist, 4AM newsreader Barry Simpson is about to call it a day.

Barry began his career in media in November 1963, working as a paper boy for the Tablelands Advertiser, which is where he became fascinated with journalism and Linotypes. He then started cleaning the printing press and soon began a trade as a qualified Hand and Machine Compositor.

Barry said that after nearly 60 years as a journalist he has seen some major changes to the local community.

“The demise of the Tobacco and Dairy Industries and redirection of the Maize industry are up there, the introduction and effects of the World Heritage Listing on towns like Ravenshoe, the setup of the State's first sugar mill in over 70 years and cane growing on the Tablelands,” said Barry.

“I’ve also seen some local tragedies up close, including the Mt Emerald Air Disaster and the school bus tragedy on the Gillies Range.”

Barry resigned from his position as Managing Editor of the Advertiser in January 2004, after working in newspapers for over 21 years to start his own business.

“After leaving the paper, my wife Lyn and I started a multimedia and marketing business

in which we trained and helped with the development of local and regional tourism publications and also radio and television advertising and marketing,” Barry said.

In 2009 Barry started working part time with radio station 4AM reading the news, which he has been doing five days a week and said that now is the time to call it a day so he can spend more time with his wife and family.

“I want to thank Lyn, my wife and soul mate of over 51 years, and our family for their never ending support, encouragement and dedication that made it possible for me to chase my dream for so long.”

Barry will be reading the news for the final time on 4AM this Friday July 31, then he is planning on enjoying his retirement.

“At the end of 56 years, eight months and thirteen days, I can truly say that my role has been a privilege and honour to be of service whenever I could,” he said.

“I have been fortunate to be at the forefront of recording and reporting many of the region’s changes, developments and incidents,” “So long for now and thanks for being part of my journey it truly has been appreciated.”

Barry Simpson will read the news for the last time on 4AM this Friday.

“We also need some tools; all of our tools are old donated second hand tools that we have

been trying to refurbish,” he said.

“We also need a bandsaw, a welder and some wood work vices for the guys to use.

“The more tools we have the more the men can build so it’s good for them mentally and it also helps us out financially.

“Now that the walls are up and the roof is on, the shed is really starting to take off.”

MAY I take this opportunity in the wake of the recent article on author Michael Musumeci’s quest for information to complete his ANZAC book to inform readers that no less than 16 war books have been produced by myself, three of them now being relative to World War 11.

Being extremely patriotic, 10 books related to the Fallen went into circulation across the centenary years 2014-2018 and addressed every aspect from their birth to their death and in some cases beyond.

A further two on the history of our Cenotaph and Anzac Park were also produced and one in remembrance of our town founder’s Grandson and the son of our first Shire Council who was killed in WW11.

These books were made available on request at no charge, the only requirement being a contribution to the ink, paper and covers used in the compilation. They still are under that

arrangement since it has always been my dedication to remember these Fallen and at no profit from their memory.

Two books on our Fallen of WW11 and another, “The King Graciously Approves” covers those who received awards both personally and posthumously.

It might be recalled that only being connected to the internet recently I was able to trace and identify our last missing soldier, a task that could only be brought about by the discovery of a 1993 document which enabled his confirmation.

Anyone with a connection to our Fallen who might seek information is welcome to telephone me and I will be only too happy to assist.

Barra Bash will be back in 2021

CANCELLED: 2019 Barra Bash Champion Angler Liam Casella, with Tinaroo Barra Bash Secretary Ann Leighton and Sponsor Scott Heinemann will have to wait till 2021 now.

AVID anglers will have to miss out on one of the region’s biggest fishing events after the Tinaroo Barra Bash was cancelled for 2020.

The decision came after the governing body of the Tinaroo Barra Bash, the Tablelands Fish Stocking Society, couldn’t secure a permit from Tablelands Regional Council or Sunwater to hold the annual event.

The Barra Bash has been conducted at Tinaroo Dam for years and attracts fishermen from all across the region to participate with prizes and trophy’s up for grabs.

Residents of the community have been very understanding

about the events cancellation with the current recession and have told Tinaroo Barra Bash Publicity Officer Laurie Wright they understand their decision.

“We just can’t get everything done to make a reasonable event and to have 400 odd people together for the presentation and other time it will be very difficult with social distancing requirements,” he said.

“We try and make the event as good as possible but we just can’t do it at this stage.

“Everyone understands the unique position we are in this year.”

All of the proceeds from the Barra Bash go towards restock-

ing of Barramundi within Tinaroo Dam and without making money from the event the restocking comes to a halt.

With the events cancellation in 2020 Mr Wright is assuring fishers that the 2021 Barra Bash is already being planned.

“We want everybody to be there next year, it will be bigger and better in 2021,” he said “We are still in uncertain times but in 2021 we can still plan on a very community and family event.

“We sincerely apologise that we cannot hold the event but we want to be sure that everyone is safe.”

Student scholarship now open

APPLICATIONS are open for the latest round of the Peninsula Developmental Road scholarship.

The scholarship is part of the jointly-funded Cape York Regional Package (CYRP).

The package has seen more than 321 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders work on Stage 1 of sealing the Peninsula Developmental Road, with more than $42 million worth of work completed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-owned

businesses.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui is encouraging students with a connection to country to apply for the 2021 round, which will offer two tertiary students scholarships worth up to $40,000 and four high school students’ bursaries of $2,250.

“Stage one of the CYRP enabled hundreds of people in our community to be trained and employed in civil construction, vegetation management, cultural heritage and road mainte-

nance,” Ms Lui said.

“Some of these trainees have gone on to start their own businesses in civil construction as a result of training and employment opportunities gained while working on the CYRP. “That’ll continue when we get on with the job of stage two of this package, injecting $237 million into Cape roads once again.”

In partnership with Traditional Owners and the Cape York Land Council, 12 second-

ary and seven tertiary scholarships have been awarded.

Torres Strait Island woman Harlisha Joe, 18, grew up in Weipa and travelled more than 3000 kilometres from her family and community in Cape York to pursue her studies at the National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) Dance College, north of Sydney.

Ms Joe received a secondary scholarship in 2017 to complete high school and has since

been awarded a placement with NAISDA, the premier training institute for Indigenous performers.

“Each day I'm lucky enough to work with fellow Indigenous students to showcase Indigenous culture, traditions and stories through dance,” Ms Joe said.

Due to COVID-19, Ms Joe travelled back to Weipa during the mandatory restrictions and has maintained her studies online by teleconference.

“The advantage is I can get all my theory work completed before I go back for term three.

“NAISDA has done an excellent job getting the developing artists to stay engaged the best they can. They are always there if we need help.”

It all begins with the soil. The soil microbes have a business deal with the plant roots, trading nutrients for sugars - this in turn builds soil carbon which builds soil structure and health.

It’s a taxing job

So from the $100 you earned you’ve just given $50.20 to the government.

If you’re in business you also have to pay Company Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Payroll Tax and the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Then we have the taxes that aren’t taxes like levies, tariffs, excise and duty’s.

I haven’t even mentioned council rates, car registration or stamp duty.

As Winston Churchill once said: "For a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle."

With Australia now going into record debt thanks to COVID-19, there are talks that GST should increase to somewhere between 12 and 15 per cent, which

would be fine if our tax rate came down. No government is going to introduce a tax that will make them less money.

If we keep going the way we are going with tax after tax on top of tax, we will not only become irrelevant and overpriced, we will become a country that is far too expensive to be competitive and too expensive to be liveable.

Australian workers are not a bottomless pit when it comes to money, in the end we will end up being taxed into oblivion.

Chilly temps destroy crops THE weekend of July 18 and 19 was one of the coldest on record for the region. Temperature at Kalunga near Herberton dropped to -4.9°C degrees, while Tolga got down to a chilly -1.9 degrees.

Farmers across the Tablelands awoke to frost on their farms with some losing entire crops.

The Jonsson family at Mount Garnet were up all night protecting their avocado crop by igniting hale bales when the temperature dipped to -1.6 degrees.

Trevellie Farming at Dimbulah bought their farm six years ago so that they could grow limes, lemons, paw paw and tomatoes, with the aim of selling direct to local consumers and restaurants, rather than sending their produce to the Brisbane and Sydney markets.

On the morning of of Friday, July 17, the family awoke to frost covering their farm after the overnight temperature fell to -1 degrees.

“We woke up and saw that the lawn was ice, and then when we went to check on the tomatoes it was pretty heart-

breaking,” Ms Lane said.

Nelly said that just as they were getting back on their feet after COVID-19, the frost wiped out most of their tomato crop.

“A rough estimate is that that we lost about $25,000 worth of crop, but that cost could rise as it’s too early to tell if those plants can recover or if we need to start again,” she said.

It’s also believed that some lychee farmers just outside of Mutchilba lost about 95 per cent of their crops when the mercury plummeted to around -4 to -6 degrees on July 17.

Sporting grants up for grabs SPORTING clubs can get up to $20,000 in grant money to support their recovery and get back on their feet after the Queensland Government announced the ‘Active Restart Infrastructure Recovery Fund’.

The ‘Active Restart Infrastructure Fund’ provides a total of $15.5 million is targeted funding for not-for-profit and recreation organisations to support their return to play.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui is encouraging clubs to apply for the funding to “help clubs return to self-sufficiency.”

“This funding is an opportunity for sport and active recreation organisations to inspire Queenslanders to re-engage in physical activity,” she said.

“These upgrades will also create local employment opportunities for tradies to deliver the capital works.

“Supporting our sport and recreation organisations to provide more physical activity opportunities for locals’ means improving the overall health and wellbeing of our communities.”

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said that the $15.5 million program would support up to 3,000 not-for-profit sport and recreation clubs and organisations as they return to play.

“Thanks to the hard work of Queenslanders, the Chief Health

Officer has been able to ease restrictions and support the safe restart of community sport and recreation,” he said.

“These grants will help make up the fundraising shortfall caused by isolation and help clubs return to self-sufficiency.

The funding could be used by clubs for a range of upgrades and refurbishment like a fresh coat of paint for the clubhouse, a new set of goal posts or even a refresh of the club canteen or bar.

“We’re creating employment opportunities for local tradies to deliver the capital works and our equipment grants will support the economic recovery of local suppliers.

“The extra support will enable clubs to keep welcoming back members so they can swing a bat, kick a ball or cheer on their local team.”

The applications opened at midday on July 16 and will close on August 7 with the total budget of $15.5 million being split 50:50 between Regional Queensland and South-East Queensland.

Bulls go down in close encounter it wasn’t to be.

The match was brought to a standstill in the second half after the referee stopped the game to call on President Remo Terranova to eject a spectator from the facility after allegedly hearing some banter from the crowd.

One needs to ask, does the referee have the authority to eject a paying spectator from the facility simply because he

doesn’t like what he heard.

There was no swearing or any derogatory remarks made in the banter and does it warrant stopping the game. These questions will be put to the referee’s association in due course.

In other results the premier Ladies played out 0-0 draw against last year’s grand finalists, the men’s reserves went down 3-2, the ladies reserves

went down by the same score but the Youth continued on their merry way with a 2-1 win.

Men’s second division played out a 3-3 draw with Innisfail, the third division won their match 3-1 against the same opponents and the under 15 to 17 juniors won 3-2.

The Bulls pay away to the Stratford Dolphins this weekend.

THE Mareeba United Football Club entertained the Leichhardt Lions at home on Saturday night with two former national ALeague stars, Zenon Caravella and Wayne Srhoj representing opposing teams.

The Bulls went into the game with an injury and two suspensions from the previous week and were forced to introduce re-

tired war horse Eric Iacutone to help in the forward line.

Leichhardt were in the same situation also having lost three of their star players from the previous week and were lucky to have 37-year-old Zenon Caravella.

Young Jon Gambino handled the ball in the penalty area in the first half gifting the Lions a 1-0

half time lead.

The player didn’t receive a yellow card for the offence which is mandatory and should have been sent off in the second half for his second yellow.
