MAREEBA and Tablelands irrigators are hoping for a solid wet season as Tinaroo Dam slowly comes back from the brink. The dam hit its lowest level in more than 12 years when it dipped below 38 per cent capacity last November, but has been slowly rebounding with the help of some much-needed rain.

The capacity of the dam is currently about 47 per cent. In a further boost for irrigators, the medium priority water allocation was increased from 81 per cent to 100 per cent on February 1. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro welcomed the move by dam operator SunWater.

“It means irrigators in this water year are not going to face any shortfalls from their allocation, which means that most farmers can maintain their current business operations without having to cut back,” he said. “But the concern is what happens after the wet season and how much rain finally does end up
