School documents 60 years of history 60 YEARS of schooling history will be turned into a documentary by the school’s 2020 seniors.

Atherton State High School (ASHS) is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year and to commemorate the milestone a documentary about the school’s history and culture is currently being developed to be shown at an open air movie night later this year.

Spearheaded by the schools leading senior body and administrative staff, the documentary will be peering into the past history of ASHS and will include old photos and videos and even interviews of past teachers and students.

Initially the open air movie night was planned for March, but due to COVID-19, it has been rescheduled to September.

ASHS Vice Captain Justin Kettenberg is excited about the response that they are receiving for the documentary.

“Everyone has really jumped on the idea and we have had so many positive responses,” he said.

“We all expected it to go well but we didn’t expect the response we got from the video we made asking people to send in their photos, videos and memories.

“Anything that helps the students form a deeper connection with the school and instil a sense of pride and culture is a great thing.

“That video was really how we got the message out there so

Past teachers and students have even offered to come into the school and give a tour about how the school grew and developed over the years, creating a

long lasting image of what the school was and what it has become.

ASHS Vice Captain Chantene Viljoun believes that ASHS’s 60 year history and memory is what makes the school unique.

“The history and culture surrounding our school is what makes it Atherton,” she said.

“We are not here without the history that came before us so it’s important to educate the students and the community on the schools growth.”

As such a huge part of the local community, the movie night will give past students, teachers and parents an opportunity to look back at their school that has helped shape their lives and celebrate the 60 years of life that the school has given the region.

WORK bans by staff across various local hospitals are currently being imposed over pay conditions.

From 6am last Thursday, June 18, workers at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) imposed work bans over pay conditions.

It’s believed that the work bans do not include doctors or nurses and only apply to support staff such as administration, cleaning, security and operations. The work bans are planned to be indefinite.

The Australian Workers Union (AWU) says that operational service staff have been leading the fight against COVID-19 and are owed a huge debt of gratitude for their work.

“Unfortunately, several

months ago the Queensland Premier unilaterally announced a freeze on all public sector wages, including frontline health workers, without any consultation or discussion,” an AWU spokesperson said.

“Cleaners, wardies, kitchen staff, laundry staff, security officers, and all other operational staff have made huge personal sacrifices to keep the community and their workmates safe.”

It’s believed that the government has agreed to pay AWU workers their 2019 wage increase with back pay until September plus a promised $1250 sign-on bonus on July 1 of this year.

The union is not happy about the 2020 pay rise being deferred to 2022 and that the

government has still not certified their agreement, which means the promised payday of July 1 may not materialise.

The AWU is hoping to keep the pressure on the State Government and the Department of Health until the agreement has been signed off and the promised payments have been made.

Queensland Branch Secretary of The Australian Workers’ Union, Steve Baker said that “The Queensland Government has committed to paying this by July 1 – we’ll be making sure that they stick to this,” he said.

“From the moment the Queensland Government announced a wage freeze, the AWU has taken up the fight on behalf of frontline workers right across Queensland for them to

be paid what they’re owed.

“Legislating to cut conditions out of existing agreements is not something that the AWU has ever and will ever support.

“Likewise, we remain firmly against any wage freezes or deferrals.”

Mr Baker says that taking money out of local communities does not stimulate the economy or create jobs.

“We appreciate that the Premier has recognised the importance of not punishing those frontline health workers that have been leading our COVID-19 response and introduced commitments to protect frontline workers pay,” he said.

“This is a significant step forward from just a few months ago when these same workers

faced missing out on their 2019 wage increase and $1250 payment altogether.”

A Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service spokesperson said in response that “The Australian Workers Union (AWU), who cover operational services such as cleaning, and security has given Queensland Health notice that they intend to take protected industrial action starting June 18,” “CHHHS is implementing contingency plans to ensure that patient care and delivery of service is not affected. There is no action being taken by frontline clinical staff, such as doctors and nurses.

“The proposed action will not affect patient care.”

New council hands down its first budget Mayor Angela Toppin has announced the first budget for the new Mareeba Shire Council

BY PHIL BRANDEL THE 20/21 Mareeba Shire budget is going to remembered as one of the most difficult in history thanks to COVID-19.

The new Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) handed down their first budget last Wednesday under the Mayorship of Angela Toppin, with the effects of the current situation in mind.

The Council, which has only been in power for just over two months, passed the new budget unanimously.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said the balanced budget was financially responsible amid COVID-19.

“We have had to make some difficult decisions, recognising the impact coronavirus has had on our community, while at the same time ensuring long-term financial sustainability,” Cr Toppin said.

“I’m very proud of the budget as it’s my very first budget as Mayor of the MSC, it’s been a difficult budget due to COVID and we have done the best that we can at this time.

“We are conscious that if COVID doesn’t ease. We may have to

revisit the document further down.

We are very proud that council is maintaining all essential services.”

At a glance the 20/21 operating budget is $46.9m, and the capital budget is 15.7m.

In comparison the 2019/20 operating budget was $46.2M and the 2019/20 capital budget was $27.7M. $10.7m has been allocated to Roads and Drainage, $16.9m to water, waste and sewage, $5.5m to community and culture, $3.4m to parks and environment and $2.4 to health and regulatory services.

There were two surprises in the budget with a rates increase of 2.5%, however this will be offset by a COVID-19 rebate for residential properties. The water access charges has also been increased by an average of $27 per residential property per annum.

A council spokesperson said “A COVID-19 rebate will be applied to the next rates notice for residential properties to offset the increase. This will be reviewed in six months.”

One of the big ticket items was $1.5 million dollars for solar initiatives at council facilities across the shire.

This includes solar panels on council swimming pools, treatment plants and community hubs.

Mayor Toppin says solar initiatives are something that council wants to encourage and lead by example.

“We are installing more solar panels on council facilities, in order to keep electricity costs down, and that benefits the shire residents.

Since installing the initial solar panels on the council chamber the reduced costs for electricity on council has been incredible and instant.”

At the meeting Mayor Toppin also announced Council’s new credit rating.

“Council’s recent credit rating has been upgraded to sound, with a neutral outlook. This improved rating by the Queensland Treasury Corporation is reflective of the Council’s financial performance, adequate debt serving capacity and sound liquidity levels and instils confidence in the organisation,” Cr Toppin said.

“As we follow Council’s longterm financial plan, I am optimistic about the future sustainability of the Shire.”

Restrictions eased on farewelling loved ones QUEENSLANDERS are now allowed to have up to 100 family and friends at funerals, after the State Government further eased coronavirus contact restrictions last week.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the revised direction on funerals took effect on June 16. “I sincerely hope that lifting the number of people allowed at funerals from 50 to 100 will provide some level of comfort for people in mourning,� Mr Miles said.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Jeannette Young said the next of kin at funeral services would be required to collect contact information for all people attending and they had to keep that list for at least eight weeks, for contact tracing. “I’m relieved that we have contained COVID-19 to the point where we can begin lifting limitations on important events like funerals.�

The allowance of 100 attendees would not be extended to wakes held after the ceremony or to weddings. Dr Young said weddings remained capped at 20 guests because they could be postponed, unlike funerals.

Under the current laws more than 20 people cannot attend a gathering, this includes church mass and weddings, but churches can now hold 100 people for a funeral, something

that is adding to the confusion over COVID 19 restrictions.

According to Lachlan Chaffey the owner and manager of Guilfoyle Funerals in Atherton and Mareeba, the restrictions make their jobs harder to care for grieving families. “The restrictions haven’t affected us as a business, but it affects local families which affects us seeing the extra stress and pressure it puts on families,� he said. “For us as funeral directors we had trouble trying to keep to those restricted numbers, as it was up to us to police the numbers at funerals. If you’re half way through a service and more people arrive, what can we do? “Now that the numbers have gone up to 100 it has made a huge difference, as most funerals are between 80 and 100 people. “It means we can now go back to caring for families, and being funeral directors and not having the extra stress of having to tell mourners that they can only have 10 people at the funeral.

Lachlan says that some of the information he’s been getting from the government can be confusing. “Each state is different for funerals and some of the emails we get are very broad. How do you keep people 1.5 metres apart in a funeral? “We are anxious because

people at funerals want to be close to each other and none of us want to get into trouble. “95 per cent of people kept to the restrictions, which we are thankful for, because otherwise it makes our job harder.

“Funerals are very important as it helps the grieving process for people; the whole idea of a funeral is to support the family so that they can begin to heal from their grieving,� said Mr Chaffey.

Improved hospital services underway THE refurbishment of the Medical Imaging Department at Mareeba Hospital is due for completion before the end of the year.

The project is providing space for the new CT Scanner, X-ray machine and an upgrade to the administration areas.

Acting Executive Director of Rural and Remote Services, Tracey Morgan said she was pleased to see progress, despite the immense challenges faced by contractors, freight companies, suppliers and tradespeople due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were expecting the CT scanner to be installed in July, but due to the coronavirus pandemic it is now expected to be opened in October,” said Ms Morgan.

CT scanners have also been upgraded across the region, with replacement units installed at

Atherton, Cairns and Innisfail hospitals late last year.

Mareeba’s Hospital Facility Manager and Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Ross Clarksmith said the local community will greatly benefit from this new service.

“Having a CT scanner allows us to to make treatment decisions without having to send people to Cairns. It’s going to stop the need for people to transferred to Cairns in an Ambulance and then come back again,” he said.

“CT scanners produce images of a higher quality and allow scans to be done faster, with reduced doses of radiation.”

Mr Clarksmith also said the Mareeba Hospital already had a major improvement last year with a new endoscopy service opening in November 2019.

“The endoscopy service has

been embraced by the community. Since we opened the service, 165 clients have had procedures in the new endoscopy rooms,” he said.

“We are back to running a weekly endoscopy list and are getting very good feedback from our staff and our patients about the service.”

Mr Clarksmith acknowledged the donation of more than $173,000 through the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation, used to purchase endoscopes for the service.

As well as new endoscopy services, the Mareeba Hospital now has an upgraded operating theatre, which opened in November, providing general surgery, dental surgery, and birthing services when appropriate.

WELCOME: Volunteers at the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre are excited to welcome visitors to the region.

Visitor centres reopen AS restrictions slowly lift across Far North Queensland to intrastate travel the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) and the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) have started reopening their visitor information centres (VICs).

The Kuranda Visitors centre reopened on Friday, June 12 operating Friday, Saturday and Sundays only.

At the time Mayor Angela Toppin said “The staff at the visitor information centre will provide helpful information for visitors about what businesses and attractions are open.”

The Mareeba Visitors centre reopened on Monday, June 15 with manager Janet Greenwood saying it was exciting to reopen for a number of reasons.

“It’s an important service that we offer to the community, it’s equally important to our volunteers to be back on deck,”

said Mrs Greenwood.

We are seeing a lot of movement with Queenslanders planning their holidays and we are getting inquiries from interstate people saying they are ready to visit.

“They are calling us wanting to know what’s open, who is open and have services changed. We are also doing a lot of research ourselves calling local operators to find out what is open or closed.

“We are also getting a lot of enquires from people wanting to know about travel up to the cape.”

The Mareeba VIC is open Monday to Friday 9-4 and on weekends 8-3pm and The Mareeba Heritage Centre Museum will reopen during the school holidays.

Most Tablelands VICs started to reopen over the weekend of June 13 and 14 while the

Herberton Mining Museum and Visitor Information Centre reopened on June 20.

TRC Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew said TRC has been ready and waiting to welcome visitors back to the region.

“TRC accredited VICs at Atherton, Malanda, Ravenshoe, Herberton and Yungaburra are open, initially for shorter hours but increasing to all day in the run up to the school holidays,” he said.

“Our staff and volunteers are very excited to be back on deck and welcoming visitors. They also love talking to locals and helping them to rediscover the hidden secrets of their own back yard.

“The volunteers are a wealth of local knowledge and information, and the centres also have a range of free interpretive material, maps, brochures and themed trails to share.”

The students from class 6C had a massive helping hand in the painting of the mural and are really happy with it and what it represents.

“It represents our school as a community,” they said.

With the success of this mural both Mr Shirley and Ms Torrisi are excited to start looking at expanding with artworks like the mural and look for other areas around the school that could do with a makeover.

BY RHYS THOMAS MAREEBA State School has added a touch of colour and history to their walls with the painting of a mural within the school grounds.

The idea of painting a mural at the school has been passed around for many years by Visual Art Teacher Rose Torrisi and what better time to begin the mural than during the quiet times of COVID-19.

Three designs were developed and voted on by the Mareeba State School staff with many of the student’s contributing to the murals painting.

Many current year 6 students contributed to the mural and were able to leave a lasting

mark on their school for years to come.

Mareeba State School Principal Nicholas Shirley believes that the mural represents the rich diversity found both inside the school and in the community.

“It’s an absolute reflection of the school, the context, the culture and the heritage of our school,” he said.

“The mural fits in with our school cliental really well, it’s very vibrant.

“The kids and parents have really been drawn to it and admiring it in the afternoons.”

The mural painted represents Mareeba State School with the sun showcasing the well-known 300 sunny days a year, the meeting of the waters of the Barron River and Granite Creek and the

children playing represents the diverse interests that children have at Mareeba State School.

The initial push behind the murals painting was to better represent Mareeba State School and the vast differences in culture and heritage of all their students.

“I wanted to represent Mareeba State School so I looked at what Mareeba meant to people and this culminated on the mural we created,” Ms Torrisi said.

“One of the main reasons we wanted to really involve the year 6 students is so they had a hand in creating a lasting legacy for their year level.

“In years to come they can come back to the school and see what they had done when they were younger.”

Local strawberries are back

READY TO EAT: Michael Barletta at Shaylee Strawberry farm is excited to be reopeing again.

WITH the cooler months well and truly here, popular fruit like mangoes make way for another Australian favourite on supermarket shelves.

In 2018, 24,446 tonnes of strawberries was picked across Australia with Queensland the biggest supplier, sending 12,670 tonnes of Strawberries to the Australian Market in 2018.

Joe and Alice Barletta are Atherton locals who purchased Shaylee Strawberries off the original owners Bob and Fay Scheehy in October 2018.

Alice admits that they had no strawberry growing experience

prior to buying the farm.

“We are both Atherton locals and we were looking for our next adventure, we wanted to do something that we hadn’t done before.” Alice said “The original owners Bob and Fay helped us out a lot in the beginning, a lot of the systems that they put in place made our job a lot easier.”

Alice says that Shaylee Strawberries closed due to COVID on March 28, but the team are now looking forward to reopening this weekend.

“We are looking forward to having everyone come back and

enjoying our fruit. From this weekend we are open 7 days a week from 9 til 4 ust in time for the school holidays.”

“We will be selling fresh strawberries, gelato and jam but we won’t be opening pick your own until September.”

Due to the popularity of Shaylee Strawberries, Alice said they’ve had to ramp up production to keep up with demand.

“Last year we planted around 60,000 plants and this year we have hand planted over 100,000 plants.”

Shaylee Strawberries are at 255 Gillies Highway, Atherton.

Time to tour the region

ATTRACTIONS REOPEN: Macka the bearded dragon and Phoenix the baby koala with their keepers at Kuranda Koala Gardens.

SOME of the region’s top tourist attractions have recently reopened thanks to the lifting of stage two COVID-19 restrictions.

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld at Kuranda all reopened on the Saturday June 13 Angela Freeman who is the Group Director of Sales and Marketing at Wildlife Tropical North Queensland said the reopening has been very exciting.

“As soon as we went into lockdown we did a complete renovation of the Kuranda Koala gardens entrance, so nobody has seen that. We also spent lockdown doing lots of cleaning and maintenance and the birds at Birdworld have been missing their daily visitors,” she said “We were able to keep the vast majority of our keepers on so this meant we have had fulltime care looking after our animals over the past few months.”

Ms Freeman said during

lockdown they have been lucky enough to have a few new additions to their wildlife parks.

“We have a few new additions including Macka the bearded dragon who has joined a harem of 4 lady bearded dragons,” Ms Freeman said.

“We also have our new Aussie Bush collection, which is our new multi species exhibit that has koalas, potoroos and reptiles and we have a new baby koala that’s just starting to pop its head out of the pouch.

“We also have a new baby pademelon that was born during our lockdown.”

Since the COVID closures Ms Freeman says the company has had thousands of bookings cancelled mainly from overseas, this has run into hundreds of thousands of dollars of lost revenue.

“Since reopening we have been getting steady inquires, but the border closure is really hurting us.

“We have so much enthusiasm from people in southern states that want to visit us, they are so keen on booking and they are so disappointed that they can’t come up.

“To miss out on the Easter trade and now the mid-year trade has cost us drastically. It’s going to be very hard for the next 12 – 18 months to get back on our feet” Ms Freeman says during this uncertain time they really appreciate help from locals “We just need whatever support people can give, if people have relatives coming up from down south send them this way,” she said “If people have been spending the last couple of years going to Bali or Fiji now is the time to holiday and discover your own backyard, we really appreciate all the locals who have supported us and in return we are offering a 20 per cent discount off the admission price for locals with ID.”

Local chutney in national spotlight

AN old family chutney recipe has won first and third place at the recent Chilli awards in Sydney.

Neil Hooper grew up on a cattle station in Western Queensland near Richmond and his nanna Isabel used to make her chutney the old fashioned way with her secret recipe while she was cooking in the station kitchen on Delta Downs in Normanton.

In 1996 Neil came up the idea of marketing and selling his nana’s chutney across Australia.

“I grew up eating my nans famous chilli chutney and I wanted to share it.

It’s a good old fashioned bush recipe that only contains natural ingredients with no preservatives.”

“It’s so authentically Australian; originally it was made in a corrugated iron station kitchen in The Gulf Of Carpentaria.”

Neil who now lives in Millaa Millaa says he could have called his product a number of names but he wanted to pay tribute to his grandmother who worked over a wood stove cooking every day.

“I called it Isabel’s after my grandmother and the signature on the label is her handwriting.”

The Mr Chilli awards were recently held in Sydney, the competition is open to companies with Chilli products in Australia and New Zealand and the judging takes place with 10 judges across a number of different categories.

Neil said that he was amazed to find out that he had received two awards in the same category.

“Our Magma Chili Chutney received 1st place in the Chilli Chutney Hot category and our Extreme Chilli Chutney received 3rd place in the same category.

“We were up against some amazing products out there and we feel very privileged to be amongst the winners.”

Neil says he is very proud of his awards, his products and his grandmother.

“It’s a tribute to my grandmother, I’m proud to be part of it and proud to be part of her story.”

Man’s best friend to help fight toxic weed TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) has announced that they have new weapon in their war on Fireweed.

Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew said that Fireweed is a toxic plant that competes with pastures and can cause livestock to lose condition and die “our region has the only known infestation in Far North Queensland,” he said TRC is now using man’s best friend to help eradicate the weed.

“We have been working with landowners for several years to map and treat infestations, and we recently received a grant to use a detector dog to look for plants.” Mr Cardew said Over the next three months Baxter the border collie and his handler Jacqui Richards, from Dogs for Conservation, are working with TRC staff, landowners and volunteers to survey outside current known Fireweed areas.

The aim is to establish the full extent of infestations so they can be targeted for control.

Mr Cardew said Baxter’s superior detection skills can locate small and isolated plants, even in long grass, while humans typically can only detect flowering specimens in relatively open areas.

“During Baxter’s first patrol he located several young seedlings, which increased the area of a known infestation.”

Men happy to be back in the shed

LOVE: Dick and Eileen Eussen of Mareeba have just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

55 years of wedded bliss WHEN Dick Eussen met his wife Eileen at a weekly dance in Mt Isa he believes it was love at first sight.

“I just walked up and asked her for a dance and everything just clicked,” he said.

Dick and Eileen married in Mount Isa on June 12 in 1965 and have now been together as husband and wife for 55 years recently celebrating their wedding anniversary at a dinner with friends.

“She is beautiful, lovable; she has been a great mother and companion” After working in the mines in

Mt Isa and then moving to Jabiru, they then moved to Mossman before retiring to Mareeba just over 16 years ago.

Dick, is one of Australia’s foremost outdoor writers and photographer’s and has been the author of seven books on fishing, boating and hunting and he has a fiction book coming out later this year.

“It’s a murder drama set in Arnhem Land,” Mr Eussen said.

Dick and Eileen now have two children, eight grandchildren and one two year old great grandchild.

WITH COVID-19 restrictions easing across the region many local organisations like the Mareeba Men’s Shed can finally reopen their doors and welcome back their members.

The Mareeba Men’s Shed is a not-for-profit organisation that has been operating in Mareeba for nearly 10 years and provides a place for local men to come and share their worries and stories all while keeping their minds and hands busy.

Mostly made up of retired men, the Men’s Shed has been a continual guiding hand for many different organisations and projects within the community.

The members use the skills they have gained over their lifetime and the new ones they learn in the shed to assist the community with construction projects, furniture refurbishment and can even do personal quotes for locals.

their issues with no judgement and to share with like-minded people, who eventually become friends.

From struggling through health issues, disabilities, losing a partner or even chasing away the black dog of depression, the Mareeba Men’s Shed provides a safe place for men to come and sit, have a cuppa, and leave all their worries at the door.

“Blokes get together, to talk about bloke things without having to worry about what they say or how they say it,” Mareeba Men’s Shed Vice President Kent Duffield said.

“It’s a place that allows

men to feel comfortable; anything we do in the workshop is really a bonus.

“We have brought people back from the brink of suicide with the companionship and camaraderie that we offer.”

The Mareeba Men’s Shed even offers talks and regular mental health check-ups at events like the Mareeba Rodeo and FNQ Field Days.

Mareeba Men’s Shed Secretary Roland Hill looks forward to coming to the Men’s Shed and spending time out of the house.

“It gives some of us a reason to get up in the morning,” he said.

“When you’ve been on this earth for 70 odd years you get a bit tired sometimes, but the Men’s Shed gives me the drive to get up and out of bed.

“Plus I get out of the house and out from under my wife’s feet which she enjoys.”

Quad bike sales spike

LOCAL retailers have seen a huge demand in quad bikes before new regulations come into effect next year.

Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Polaris have all announced their intent to stop exporting quad bikes to Australia, due to new compulsory safety regulations.

Last year The Federal Government introduced the new regulations in response to an ACCC report outlining the risk of quad bikes rolling over and crushing riders.

The big four quad bike brands all announced they would stop selling quad bikes in Australia from October next year due to the new standards, which requires all quad bikes to be fitted with rollover protection at point of sale by October 2021.

Motorbike retailers are now struggling to source quad bikes as consumers stock up before new regulations take affect next year.

Owner of Tableland Bikes and Power Equipment in Mareeba, Clint Tilse said that Honda has sold out.

“They (Honda) now have a back order of around 450 bikes and they can only import 30-40 bikes per month,” he said.

But Mr Tilse said it’s not just the loss of sales of that is going to hurt his business.

“Last year I sold about 80 quad bikes, I don’t make much money on the sales of quads. It’s when people bring their quad bike back in for a service, parts

or repairs is when we make our money,” he said.

“It’s not how much the ban will affect me next year, but how much it’s going to affect me for the next 10 to 20 years.

“We are still seeing quads coming back in for a service 10 years after we sold them. So that’s 80 quads a year that I won’t be seeing come through my workshop.”

Mr Tilse understands why Honda is pulling out.

“Australia is the only country requiring these roll over bars and we make up less than 1 percent of Honda’s quad bike market, so

why would they bother?” he said.

Sam Best from Extreme Motorcycles in Atherton is a Polaris dealer and she claims it’s not just going to hurt their business.

“Being a local small business (Polaris pulling out of Australia) is going to hurt us, but it’s also hurting small farmers. There are some local Mango and Avocado farmers who need quads to spray their crop but side by sides are too big to get around their propert,” she said.

“The same for rounding up cattle, you wouldn’t want to be rounding up large feral bulls on a motorbike.”

Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar who announced the new regulations on behalf of the Federal government in 2019 said.

“Quad bikes are the leading cause of fatalities in Australia of all consumer products that aren’t regulated,” he said.

“This safety standard aims to address the high risk of rollovers, which is especially important for many of our farmers and their families who use these vehicles daily.

“Since 2001, 230 people have been killed on quad bikes. About 60 per cent of all quad bike accidents are caused by roll-over.”

The news isn’t all bad for primary produces as one quad bike manufacture has said that they are in the Australian quad bike market for the long haul by making rollover safety equipment standard on their range.

CF Moto have released a new 400cc model which complies with new mandatory safety standards.

CFMoto's Australian distributor, Mojo Motorcycles, said the entire CFMoto quad bike range would be updated to meet the requirements of stage 2 of the Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard by next October.

Indigenous art comp

YOUNG Indigenous artists are encouraged to spread their creativity and culture across a canvas and enter into this year’s annual North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) Indigenous Youth Art Competition.

The theme of this year’s competition is Regeneration. The winning entries will have to display a strong, imaginative indigenous artwork which is dynamic and conveys the theme of Regeneration.

The artist must tell the story of regeneration, life before, during and after coronavirus – ‘Always was Always Will Be’ and ‘In This Together’, how adjusting to a new way of knowing, being and doing together can make you stronger.

A huge range of incredible submissions from gifted young artists were submitted last year with the winners coming from Cairns and Herberton.

The closing date for submissions is Sunday July 19 at 11.59pm with the winners being announced in the first week of August.

Cape Lockdown breeds frustration ahead of holidays EXCITED: St Stephen’s Catholic College Captains Ethan Backshall, Aarin Ryan, Andrew Gallo and Jenna Kerswell are all excited to see their 2020 formal to be cleared for August.

Formal gets go ahead SENIORS at St Stephen’s Catholic College in Mareeba have let out a huge sigh of relief after the school announced a date for their 2020 formal, saving the seniors end of year celebrations.

The formal was originally scheduled to be held in June this year, but due to COVID-19 it has now been postponed to August 29.

Parents however will not be allowed to attend the formal because of the existing social distancing requirements which presents a major change from previous years.

The school is still constantly evaluating and assessing the government’s rules and restrictions for COVID-19

and is still advocating for a normal formal for their students.

One of SSCC College Captains Aarin Ryan said that a vast majority of the students are still happy for their formal to be going ahead.

“Most students understand that the formal is not going to be worse than past years, it’s just going to be different,” she said.

“We have already gone through so much that there is no point in picking out all of the negatives so we just look forward to what we have.

“With the formal being pushed back we have been given more and more time to prepare so it’s a blessing in disguise.”

College Principal Kerry Manders assures students that they will still get the full formal experience for 2020 despite COVID-19 setbacks.

WHILE Queenslanders are now allowed to roam across the state, there is growing frustration at the restrictive constraints still in place on Cooktown and Cape York.

Cape York, Cooktown and surrounding areas have been a Declared Biosecurity Area since early April, with some of the strictest lockdown restrictions in the state.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles last week announced the first stage of the easing of access restrictions for Queensland’s remote communities.

“People living in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities — plus the Burke and Cook shires — can now easily travel throughout ‘declared travel zones’ set by Queensland’s Chief Health Officer,” he said.

This means that residents can now travel to ‘Declared Travel Zones’ and do not need to go into quarantine when they return home.

Under the latest stage of lifted restrictions people who have been living in Torres Strait Island, The Torres Shire, Northern Peninsula Area, Mapoon, Napranum, Aurukun, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Lockhart River, Cook Shire, Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal, Burke, Mornington, Doomadgee and the Weipa town area can now visit Cairns, Carpentaria, Mareeba, Tablelands, Douglas, Mount Isa, Cloncurry and Carpentaria areas (includes Normanton).

Cooktown Mayor Peter Scott says there seems to be a double

standard.

“People can come to the cape if they say they’re an essential worker or if they have relatives living on the cape, which they have been doing with their caravans and boats in tow, it’s wide open for abuse,” he said.

“We have these quasi tourists coming to the cape but it’s ridiculous that we are not letting proper tourists in from the ‘Declared Travel Zones’.

“Local residents can travel to Cairns or the Tablelands and can come back again, but tourists from those same areas can’t come up and visit us, someone has got in their mind that local tourists are a big risk.”

Mayor Scott says time is running out for some businesses as the much needed school holiday period approaches.

“We get a lot of people from Cairns and the Tablelands visiting us during school holidays,” he said.

“We have been lobbying hard to allow local tourism; people who already live with the ‘Declared Travel Zone’ let them come up, Police can check where they have come from.

“The roadhouses, accommodation providers and caravan parks are doing it very tough.

“If we leave it much longer, when the restrictions and borders do reopen, they may not have the capital to be able to hire staff and buy supplies, many of these businesses will just go under and then we won’t have anything to offer tourists when they do come up.”

Holistic Land Management set to take the North by Storm!

Holistic Management Trainer Brian Wehlburg from Inside Outside Management is coming to Mareeba this Thursday and Friday to deliver the first 2 days of an 8 day Holistic Land Management Course.

Third generation Zimbabwean with a deep connection to wildlife and nature. Brian understood early in his career, the need to create resilience in the landscape to maintain healthy levels of wildlife for his tourism wildlife sanctuary and hunting business.

After immigrating to Australia, Brian managed cattle properties in Central Queensland. His family now owns and runs a cattle property on the NSW central coast, inland from Port Macquarie with a coastal influence seeing 1.2 metres of rain each year, with a guaranteed inch of rain per month.

Brian spent some time in the bush and trained under Allan Savory, Zimbabwean ecologist, and livestock farmer (see Allan Savory’s co-created TED talk on how to fight desertification). Allan made sense to Brian and triggered change. Brian co created his business Inside Outside Management as a trainer and educator of Holistic Land Management in Australia, and he runs courses all over Australia and consults internationally.

Extract from Croaker Conversation Episode 6 interview with Brian Wehlburg and Sally Fields “We are our environment. The example is rain and the result of rain. Rain wakes up the environment, people’s behaviour and mental wellbeing improves as the health of the environment improves. As soon as that bit of green comes through, the impact on peoples mental state and how they interact with each other changes. It was so dramatic after the last year with the fires and drought, everything suddenly becomes better. People in the towns where smiling at each other, people stopped to have a chat or crack a joke and really it was just about the environment waking up and becoming alive and healthy again. Excepting as a human, you are nature, you are part of nature, and everything about us is intricately involved with nature. We get great feelings from the environment, we are inspired by the environment. We are totally connected to our environment.

Back to the days of Aristotle – we got this idea that we controlled our environment and if we could just find the right switches and flick them in the right order we could fix all the problems but in fact we are our environment. If you damage the environment, ultimately you damage yourself.

One of the key components of Holsitic Management is that you are your environment There is a ground swell of change happening and regenerative agriculture is here to stay. Farmer’s markets are blossoming across Australia and are a good indicator of this change. Koah Hall’s first weekly farmers market blazing a trail in the North. The official opening of this ‘Hour of Power’ market is the 11th of July, 9 am to 10.30 am, selling local regenerative produce, home garden goodness, coffee, breakfast, connection, and good times.

This is a great time to basically lift your game above practise. We’ve focused a lot of our production on practise and certification – Australia has seven different organic certifications. So you ask yourself, what is organic if we have seven different certifications?

As we go through this rapid change, which is needed in agriculture, these processes which people have been doing for all their generation and possibly their parent’s generation will change. So all these practises and processes that we are familiar with - there will be a huge amount of change there. So again we need to change the monitoring that we are doing there, because if we are monitoring these processes like the certifications, if the practise changes, well the certifications generally become null and void – again with Holistic Management we are tending to push people towards more outcomes.

Is your land getting better? Are you putting more clean water into the creeks? Are you getting more biodiversity in your soil? There is no right answer to achieve the actual out comes we want, because there are so many ways of achieving them, whereas certifications tend to limited the options and push them down a narrow path of management.

Farm chemicals aren’t good or bad – it is the way that they are used. They are a tool, it’s the way we use the tools that is the issue.

With Holistic Management, we acknowledge all tools Livestock are brought in as a positive tool for managing the environment. Instead of seeing cattle as only a production method or as an enterprise. If we can utilise livestock to mimic nature, they can have a huge positive impact. We see that in every continent around the world now where people have changed the management of livestock and have become more productive in their monitoring. Huge improvements in environmental health of the land are seen. An Australian example is Beetaloo Station, NT. A large cattle station transformed using Holistic Land Management by the late John Dunnicliff and his family. Just Add Water Case study available to read on the Soils for Life website.

It comes at very little cost. The animals are solar powered, they reproduce themselves and they appreciate on your balance sheet. Try to do that with a John Deere tractor. There is huge potential there for producers to increase production but reduce costs because at the end of the day we get water, biology, minerals and sunlight all for free. So if we can capitalise on those four processes, it reduces our cost that we have to pay out of pocket, but the thinking is what drives all of this. Change begins in the real estate between our ears.

Editor and owner of The Express Newspaper Carl Portella said that past few weeks have been challenging for a number of reasons.

“Working from home when trying to run a newspaper is challenging, but also trying to keep on top of all the COVID-19 updates that were coming out was also a challenge.”

“Sometimes the news was changing every 30 minutes and I believe we rose to the challenge and kept all our readers informed in a timely and informed manner” Now that restrictions have eased, the office is back open 8.30am to 5pm, five days a

“We are still publishing our paper every week. We are not going online only and our news has always been free and always will be,” said Mr Portella.

Is statue?

Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist George Santayana is credited with saying ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’

At the moment there have been calls for historical monuments and statues of people Like Captain James Cook to be torn down due to their immoral acts committed upon Indigenous Australians.

I can understand the pain that our Indigenous Australians must feel due to situations like the stolen generation and the thousands of Aboriginal people that have been massacred since white settlement.

But pulling down his statute is a slippery slope, where do we stop?

Do we pull down statues of Captain Arthur Phillip who settled Australia with the first fleet displacing many indigenous Australians?

What about Governor Lachlan Macquarie who ordered his troops to steal children from the site of massacres he ordered his troops to conduct?

Should Cooktown be renamed? or how about Townsville as it was named after Robert Towns a well-known industrialist who made his

name by ‘blackbirding’ South Sea Islanders in the 19th century?

Emelda Davis, president of the Australian South Sea Islanders Association, said her grandfather was kidnapped and brought to Australia when he was 12.

Ms Davis told the ABC that there is still little acknowledgement of Australia’s slave history.

“There’s a monument in the town of Robert Towns that celebrates his entrepreneurial wisdom and [being a] founding father of the township,” she said.

“We want to see the same monuments put up around Townsville that depict the truth of the nation, because our communities are struggling.”

All of the above is wrong, and it should not be forgotten nor forgiven, but what we should be doing is concentrating on what we want not what we don’t want.

We need to concentrate on making sure that Indigenous Australians are given every opportunity and end any sort of racial discrimination that is directed at them.

Tearing down statues is just sweeping the dirt under

the carpet. Rather than tearing them down lets have monuments and plaques put up reminding everybody about the atrocious acts that Australia’s forefathers committed.

The giant Captain Cook statue in Sydney’s Hyde Park which was erected in 1879 still bears an inscription “Discovered this territory 1770” discrediting 60,000 years of Indigenous occupation.

Instead of pulling it down, let’s change it to something that all Australians can agree on.

Older statues and monuments should be amended to include the broader uglier, truths about their subjects.

And while we are at it, let’s have statues of individuals that have done the right thing by our communities.

People like Neville Bonner, Albert Namatjira, Eddie Mabo and others.

It’s time to concentrate on those who have done right and less on those who did wrong.

1. Create a double boiler out of a small saucepan filled with ▶ 170g 85% dark chocolate, chopped simmering water, and a medium bowl set over top. Place the ▶ 170g salted butter, chocolate, cubed butter and strong coffee in the bowl, and stir until melted and combined. Take the bowl off the heat, and let the cut into chunks chocolate cool slightly. ▶ 1/4 cup strong 2. Fill a large bowl with ice cold water and set aside. Place the egg brewed coffee yolks, 2/3 cup of sugar, rum, and the water in another medium ▶ 4 egg yolks bowl and set over the simmering water. Using an electric hand ▶ 1/2 tsp vanilla whisk, whisk the yolk mixture until it’s thick and airy, ‘like runny extract mayonnaise’. ▶ 2/3 cup caster 3. Remove the whipped yolk mixture from the heat, and place the sugar bowl in the bowl of ice water. Gently whip until the yolk mixture is ▶ 1 tbsp rum thick and cooled. ▶ 1 tbsp water Fold in the chocolate mixture from step 1 into the egg yolk mixture. ▶ 4 egg whites ▶ 1 tbsp castor sugar 4. Using a hand held whisk, whip the egg whites and salt in a clean bowl free from any grease, until soft peaks form. Sprinkle the ▶ pinch of salt tablespoon of sugar over the egg whites, and whip until stiff peaks form, and they’re thick and shiny. Add in vanilla.

5. Fold one third of the whipped egg whites into the chocolate mixture, and then fold in the remaining whipped whites until just incorporated.

6. Carefully pour the mousse into ramekins and refrigerate until firm, at least 4 hours or overnight.

Poster promotes safe return to local sport

SPORTING organisations across the region will be gifted with a constant reminder of how to return to their sports safely and responsibly after the release of the ‘It’s time to bench COVID for good’ poster.

A joint project between the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) and North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF), the poster will be distributed directly to community sporting clubs across the Far North as well as all 31 local government councils in North Queensland The poster promotes practical tips for staying safe while returning to training including safe facility practices, not sharing water bottles, encouraging personal hygiene and the importance of social distancing.

NQPHN Chief Executive Officer John Greg said the resource focuses on giving community sporting clubs and associations a handy guide for a safe return to sport at all levels.

“Obviously our local sporting community is desperately keen to get back to playing the sports they love, but we need to ensure that it is done the right way,” he said.

“We’ve designed this poster for community sporting clubs to place in and around their facilities as well as to distribute to members.

“These posters will help people take simple steps to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread.”

The safe return to training, competitions and programs is of the utmost importance to both NQPHN and NQSF as stressed by the NQSF Chief Executive Officer Stephen Farrell.

“We all need to do what we can to advance a safe and properly prepared plan for the resumption of sport and active recreation in our communities,” he said.

Hiking the region

WITH so much natural beauty on our doorstep, a new hiking group is giving locals the chance to get out outdoors and experience the best our region has to offer.

The Mareeba Hiking group started in May of this year and since then has continued to grow in popularity as people get the urge for the simpler things in life.

The brainchild of Robert Owens, an avid hiker from Mareeba, he decided to try and get together like-minded people who wanted to experience the beauty that our backyard holds.

The weekend hikes are promoted via a facebook page – Mareeba Hiking Group – which now has nearly 800 members with some hikes having almost 50 people of all ages participate.

The Facebook page also gives hikers the chance to link up and organise their own hikes.

Mr Owen wants people to use the page as a central hub to find other locals who want to participate in hikes.

“The group has been going for about 6 weeks and we have 768 odd members now,” he said.

“What I want to see is different social groups, age groups and fitness levels all coming out for the hike and doing their own thing.

“The best thing that comes out of these hikes besides the physical health benefits is the mental health aspect of getting out and grounded in nature.”

NATURAL BEAUTY: The Mareeba Hiking Group at Wooroonooran National Park near Millaa Milla on Saturday. The group enables locals to connect with each other and organise hiking trips around the region on the weekends.

Mr Owen encourages Tablelanders to get involved with the Mareeba Hiking Group and hopes that people can use the page as an opportunity to organise their own hikes with likeminded people.

“The social aspect is fantas-

tic as well, meeting new people and forming friendships is such a simple but rewarding activity,” he said.

“All I can say to those who are thinking about joining the group and coming out on a hike is to just come out and try a hike.

“People will be surprised at the quality of the tracks and the beauty that can be found right in their backyards.”

The Mareeba Hiking Group Facebook page also acts as a great source of information as members can ask questions

about hikes they are interested in and listen to members who have experience with those tracks.

All ages and fitness levels are catered for from children to adults and seasoned hikers to first time hikers.

Athletics return

THINGS are starting to heat up in the Tablelands with the gradual return of athletes to their track and field events after Tableland Athletics returned to the field last weekend.

By adhering to social distancing rules and government regulations athletes could only participate in specific track and field events that were held at the Tolga Reserve.

14 senior athletes aged between 11 and 17 years of age got the chance to undertake some form of athletic events including sprints, shotput, discus and finish off with a relay event.

Tableland Athletics President Andrew Ford was excited

to see athletes back out on the field and stretching their legs.

“The kids were thrilled to bits that something was on offer for them to do,” he said.

“We want to make sure we are doing everything right before we get more kids out and training.

“Once the kids get used to knowing what we can and can’t do it will run more smoothly.”

Junior Tableland Athletics commenced their training at the Tolga Reserve on Sunday, June 21.

Tolga trainer wins big at race day

TOLGA trainer Sharlee D’Avila collected three wins from the five race program at the Atherton Turf Club’s meeting on Saturday, June 20.

D’Avila’s winners included Se Rendre (2YO and 3YO Maiden Handicap 1000m), Conqueress (Class B Handicap 1000m) and Instinction Lass

(Maiden Plate 1200m).

Trainer Roy Chillemi’s Buoyancy took the honours in race four (Class 1 Handicap 1200m), while race five (Class B Handicap 1400m) winner Paniagua was trained by Alex Malliff.
