WHEN 13-year-old Missy Clarkson lost her battle with cancer in August of this year, her mum Anj Mittelstadt decided she wanted something good to come out of the tragic situation. Missy was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and when people

asked Anj how they could help, she directed to them to give blood. From there Missy’s Donors was born. “You can start your own blood donors’ group and the blood goes all over Queensland,” Anj said. Missy Had over 150 blood

products including transfusions, plasma and platelets during her treatment. “If you donate cash you don’t know how much of the money is actually going to people in need, whereas if you give blood 100 per cent will be used by someone in need,” Anj said.

“It’s just so easy to donate blood, it costs you nothing and there is always a need for blood. “Our goal this year is for 2020 donations, each donation saves three lives so that’s 6060 lives Missy’s Donors could possibly save.” Groups of people started getting together to give blood on behalf of Missy and soon T shirts were given out to recognise locals who had given blood as part of Missy’s Donors. Anj has now set up a website and charity selling red ‘Missy Donor’ T-shirts and called it ‘This strong mum.’ “Through the sale of the Tshirts, I help parents of children with paediatric cancer as quite often the parents are forgotten and left floundering,” she said. “I don’t take any money out of the charity, 100 per cent goes to parents in need through support and information.” Anj also has big plans for the charity into the future. “The Queensland Children’s hospital has already engaged us, and I plan on making spreading it around the country,” she said. “If people want to donate blood as part of Missy Donors, all they have to do is tell the receptionist that you would like to donate as part of Missy Donors. “I always ask people to send me photos of them giving blood, so that we can post it on our socials.” If you would like to buy a tshirt or donate go to www.thisstrongmum.com or to Facebook at This Strong Mum.

Niña set Fire season spreads La to bring wild across Tablelands weather to FNQ FIRES have been sporadically popping up around the Tablelands in increased volumes, signalling the beginning of the fire season. Fire services on the Tablelands only recently finished a fire campaign last fortnight where they battled a blaze out near Springmount Raceway that raged for six days before getting under control last Wednesday. Last week saw two separate fires breaking out on the Tablelands with the Gillies Range fire starting on Thursday and Biboorah starting on Friday. With the fire season now upon on us Tablelanders must take the appropriate steps to ensure that you are prepared in the case of a fire emergency. Acting Inspector Western Command, Bradley Fleming said that this year’s fire season has already started and that firefighters have already been battling blazes. “The wind that we traditionally get which we are experiencing right now with the dryer temperatures and low humidity will dry out the fuel loads,” he said. “We are by no means out of the woods yet we still have a good month or two of dry period to come. “Anyone looking to start a fire above 2m squared will require a fire permit regardless if you are in a rural area or an urban-rural area.”

FIRES: Acting Inspector of Western Command Bradley Fleming is warning residents of the Tablelands not to get complacent with the fire season well under way.

People all across the Tablelands should currently be exercising their fire management and escape plan and ensuring that the areas around your structures are clear of debris and fuel for the fires. Although this year’s fire season has not been as destructive

as last years, people cannot be complacent. “We are expecting a shorter less intense bushfire season due to the La Nina but that means we will have a longer wet season,” Mr Fleming said. “People cannot be complacent around the area even with

the wet there are still large areas of the Tablelands that may not experience that weather until later on. “We are experiencing rapidly dry conditions west in areas like Dimbulah where the temperature is rising and humidity is going down.”

THE Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) declared that a La Niña had developed in the Pacific Ocean. A La Niña weather event usually signifies wetter than average conditions for Far North Queensland and a higher severity of cyclones affecting the region. In eastern Australia, the average December-March rainfall during La Niña years is 20% higher than the long-term average, with eight of the ten wettest periods occurring during La Niña years. This is particularly notable for the east coast, which tends to be less affected by La Niña during the winter months but can experience severe flooding during La Niña summers. La Niña events often form in autumn or winter, then decay in late summer. The greatest impact normally occurs during the spring and early summer period. All surveyed international climate models indicate this La Niña will persist until at least January 2021. A BOM Spokesperson said that for Far North Queensland La Niña brings more tropical cyclones than normal. “We are also likely to see the first rains of the northern wet season earlier than normal,” they said. “We need to be prepared for more tropical cyclones and ear-

lier tropical cyclones and wetter conditions with an increased risk of flooding during the upcoming wet season.” The last La Niña event occurred from 2010-2012 and resulted in one of Australia’s wettest two-year periods on record. Widespread flooding occurred in many parts of Australia associated with the record rainfalls. Tropical cyclone activity in the 2010-2011 season was near normal. However, five of the tropical cyclones during 201011 were in the severe category, including Tropical Cyclone Yasi, which caused widespread damage to Far North Queensland. This year’s event is likely not to be the same intensity as 2010-11, but is still likely to be of moderate strength. While models agree La Niña will continue well into summer 202021, around half the models predict a strong event, while 3 of 8 models suggest moderate strength. The Bureau previously shifted from La Niña Watch to La Niña Alert on August, 18, 2020. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared an active La Niña status on September 10, 2020.

Angela Nason of Mareeba has been named an #eatqld champion after starting her business Tablelands to Tabletop.

Mareeba entrepreneur named newest #eatqld Champion WHEN starting her new business venture in the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown, Angela Nason would never have guessed that in just a few short months she would be named Queensland’s newest #eatqld Champion. ‘Tablelands to Tabletop’ is the brain child of Mareeba local Angela Nason and sought to connect struggling Tableland farmers with consumers’ right across Far North Queensland. Angela now buys produce from 30 local farmers across the Atherton Tablelands and distributes their produce to people from the Tablelands all the way to the Torres Strait and everywhere in-between. Being a #eatqld Champion was a natural fit for Angela as

she had built her new business using social media. “The response I received to shouting out to my friends was central to the success of Tablelands to Tabletop so being a #eatqld Champion seems a perfect way to promote the wonderful produce of Atherton Tablelands farmers,” Angela said. “We are blessed to have so much wonderful fresh food produced in this region and I am truly excited to be playing a part in seeing it get from the farm to the table. “Healthy food is essential to a healthy body and mind and, in these very different times, doing something to promote our wonderfully delicious local produce while supporting local farmers seems like a perfect

way to contribute to the community.” Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said every economy had been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic but agriculture was playing a key part in economic recovery. “Angela’s example is truly inspirational as we unite and recover from the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said. “Tablelands to Tabletop will be a fine ambassador promoting Queensland’s world of flavour from the state of delicious. “By eating Queenslandproduced meat, seafood, fruit, nuts and veggies you support everybody that brings that food to your table.”

THIS week the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce held a meet the candidate’s of Cook lunch at the Mareeba Soccer Club. Encouraging voters to be informed, prior to the lunch each candidate for the Seat of Cook was given six questions to answer in writing, as well as answering questions from the floor. The six questions were. Q1. As the State Member for Cook, will you relocate the main office back to Mareeba within the Cook Electorate? Q2. What will you do to improve the roads in the region in particular Mareeba to Cairns?

Q3. What commitment can you give to improve water security for the area? Q4. Crime is an ongoing issue, what will you do to combat this problem? Q5.What will you do to fight for improved health services for our town? Q6. What will you do to eradicate crocodiles from our environment? President of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Joe Moro said they held the meet and greet as a way for all constituents whether they be members of the chamber or not to help

make up their minds. “The State election is less than four weeks away and we thought it was timely opportunity for residents in the Seat of Cook to be able to meet all the local candidates at the same place at the same time,” said Mr Moro. “The seat of Cook is always a very tight race and we hope locals will be as educated as possible in the lead up to the election.” A full wrap of the lunch and candidates answers to the six questions will be published in next week’s Express newspaper.

SHED SORTED? Federal MP Bob Katter, FNQ Growers president Joe Moro, Hill MP Shane Knuth, KAP candidate Tanika Parker and former Atherton Mayor Jim Chapman look at plans for the North Johnstone transfer at Tinaroo Dam on Friday.

North Johnstone Transfer gets tick over Nullinga FEDERAL Kennedy MP Bob Katter has been rallying the troops in the hope of applying pressure to the State and Federal Governments with the aim of making the North Johnstone Transfer a reality, providing greater water security to the Tablelands. The project would transfer water via a pipeline from the upper North Johnstone River, into the Barron River and then into Tinaroo Dam, with the hope of bolstering dam levels. Mr Katter told media on Friday morning that the North Johnstone Transfer could have the potential of doubling agriculture production in and around Mareeba. “The transfer is much cheaper and there is much more water than any other alternative, as the water and the infrastructure is already here,” he said. Chairman of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and President of FNQ Growers Joe Moro said that the North Johnstone transfer idea made more

sense than the Nullinga Dam option. “There will be an objection coming from the chamber (to the Mareeba Shire Council) over Nullinga Dam planning,” Mr Moro said. “FNQ Growers are also strongly behind the diversion option. We also support a second stage where a series of weirs could be put in. “We see the transfer as a much better option and way ahead of the Nullinga Dam option, which we have grave concerns about water quality with the dam only filling once every 15 years.” Former Atherton Shire Mayor Jim Chapman said that the transfer plans had been around since the completion of the dam. “When they finished the dam they asked dam engineer Carlo `Charlie' Paolucci to find other option, as a way to supplement water, because back then they realised this dam would not meet the demands of Mareeba and Dimbulah in the future,” Mr

Chapman said. “He found that the cheapest and quickest option to refill the dam was to divert part of the river with a tunnel which dumps water into the Barron. “The tunnel is only 1.5 kilometres long, give me ten fit guys with picks and shovels and we could have it built in a few months, that’s how simple the idea is.” Some critics from the Cassowary Coast have expressed concerns that diverting water from the North Johnstone into the Barron and Tinaroo would disadvantage farmers downstream, it’s something that Mr Katter actually claims the reverse is true. “On rare occasions it could be used as flood mitigation to stop flooding in Innisfail,” Mr Katter said Mr Knuth said that his constituents around Innisfail would be happy if some of the water was transferred away. “What has been raised with me is that when it floods in Innisfail, if there was some way

that a little bit of that water could be transferred away from their homes they would be very happy to go with this.”

Something big for the Tablelands AUSTRALIA is known for its big things, like the big pineapple, the big barramundi and now the Tablelands can add the big avocado to the list. Atherton farmer John Gallo said he started thinking about the idea of building a big avocado two years ago. When he mentioned it to his grandson, he loved the idea as well and from there the big avocado started to come to life. “When we had the COVID lockdown, we couldn’t go anywhere so building it was a great

way to keep me occupied,” Mr Gallo said. “We started building in March, but I got a bit distracted during avocado season and finally last week we got to put it up.” John said the structure is 5.2 metres high and made out of steel and oyster netting. “I had to build it on its side as I didn’t have any scaffolding,” he said. “The oyster netting gives it that Hass Avocado look and feel. “If it hadn’t of been for the

lockdown I probably would never have done it.” So far the reception has been positive from locals and passing traffic. John also said the big avocado will have several uses. “When it’s 100 per cent complete, it will actually be a roadside stall,” he said. “It will have a door and some shelves so that we can sell fruit from it.” The Big Avocado is located at 8560 Kennedy Highway in Atherton.

Forum answers questions on seasonal workers

LNP Candidate for Hill Nick Cuda, Senator Susan McDonald, Assistant Minister for Northern Australia Michelle Landry and LNP candidate for Cook Edward ‘Nipper’ Brown at the growers and seasonal workers forum at the Mareeba Leagues club.

LAST Thursday local growers and suppliers met at the Mareeba Leagues club for a forum on seasonal workers. The forum was organised by LNP candidate for Cook Edward “Nipper” Brown with special guests Senator for Queensland Susan McDonald, Assistant Minister for Northern Australia Michelle Landry and LNP Candidate for Hill Nick Cuda. Points discussed included

the lack of backpackers and seasonal workers ahead of the upcoming mango and lychee season, cuts to Job Keeper and Job Seeker as well as the Pacific Labour Scheme and moves by the government to encourage unemployed job seekers from the city to move to regional areas to pick fruit. “We shut the borders about March 20 of this year, before this we had about 240,000 holiday

makers and seasonal workers in the country,” Senator Susan McDonald said. “Almost immediately people started going back to their country of origin and we have continued to lose them at the rate of about 10 per cent per month. “We have now about 60,000 backpackers and seasonal workers left in Australia.” Senator McDonald claimed that some growers are choosing

to pull out fruit trees rather than pruning, watering and fertilising them. “This is the most serious crisis we have ever faced in Australian agriculture,” she said “The most important thing that we can do is get people away from the cities and into the regional areas.” Senator McDonald mentioned that the federal government had started to roll out measures aimed at getting long term unemployed who are currently living in cities to move to rural areas. “There is $6000 if you have been unemployed for more than 12 months that can be used for relocation costs to regional areas to become a seasonal picker,” she said. “You can also get up to $40 per day in accommodation subsidies for up to 12 weeks.” “In addition JobSeeker payment recipients who begin earning an income over $1257 per fortnight will remain in the social security system indefinitely meaning they do not need to reapply for payment when seasonal work ends.”

$250 million to create local jobs

The fifth round of the Building Better Regions Fund has been announced with a $200 million pool, plus a $50 million Regional Tourism Recovery initiative. Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin welcomes the Federal Government’s latest funding commitment.

Are registered as a fully eligible job seeker with a jobactive provider, an Intensive Stream participant with a ParentsNext provider or participating in Disability Employment Services. Have mutual obligation requirements at the time of obtaining the job. Have been receiving an eligible income support payment JobSeeker Payment, Youth Allowance or Parenting Payment for the last 12 months. Your new location must be within Australia, be at least 90

minutes away from where you currently live, based on your normal mode of transport and not be within the same capital city. Senator McDonald also mentioned that the Pacific Labour scheme had been restarted in August. “On September 3 we had 160 people from Vanuatu land in the Northern Territory to start picking mangos,” she said. “The states need to opt in to the Pacific Labour scheme and operate within a series of Covid safe steps, which includes a health and quarantine system.” For more information on the relocation allowance go to www. jobsearch.gov.au/jobseekerinfo/ move-for-work

AUSTRALIANS are being encouraged more and more to travel locally and experience a home-grown holiday with $250 million being injected into regional Australia. The $250 million package includes two measures, a $50 million Regional Tourism Recovery initiative and $200 million for a fifth round of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF). The Regional Tourism Recovery initiative aims to assist businesses in regions heavily reliant on international tourism and give them the boost they need to get back on the road to recovery. Both the Mareeba Airport Stage 2 upgrade and the more recent Chillagoe Critical Water Infrastructure Upgrade were done with money from the BBRF. Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said Council has been fortunate enough to fund

some of their projects through support from the BBRF. “I welcome the Federal Government’s latest funding commitment to boost local infrastructure projects in regional communities,” she said. “The BBRF is an excellent program that supports and creates local jobs and enhances the liveability for regional areas. “I am very pleased to see the program continue.” Federal Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham said tourism regions had been hit hard by COVID-19 and that these packages would help them bounce back. “Tourism is such an important job creator and driver of many regional economies,” he said. “We want to make sure that our tourism regions are in the best possible shape on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic. “This targeted new fund

will support internationally dependant tourism regions to adapt their offerings, experiences and marketing to appeal to domestic visitors in the short term.” Federal Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch said this latest round of the BBRF would mean more local wins for communities. “More local jobs, better community infrastructure and a boost to our local economy,” he said. “This is a successful program with many local projects in the electorate having already received substantial funding support in previous rounds. “I look forward to seeing more of the same with another round of funding.” The fifth round of the BBRF will be delivered along the same framework as the previous four rounds and eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

Felicity’s artwork goes state wide Nine-year-old Felicity Graham from Malanda with her winning artwork which will be published in the upcoming 2021 Farm Safety calendar.

A YOUNG Malanda student has joined 11 other budding artists in getting her artwork featured in a Queensland Farm Safety calendar. Each year Workplace Health and Safety Queensland invites primary school students to enter their annual Farm Safety Calen-

dar competition. The competition encourages young Queenslanders to submit drawings with farm safety themes for inclusion in the 2021 calendar. Felicity Graham, who is in grade 4 at the Malanda State School, recently found out that she was one of the 12 chosen

children (one for each month) and that she would have her artwork on farm safety featured as February’s artwork for the 2021 calendar. Mum Kelly Graham admits that her daughter has artistic tendencies as she also won the same competition 2 years ago. “She was lucky enough to win in 2017/18, and then this year with COVID she spent a lot of time at home,” she said. “The theme she chose this year was sun safety and wearing the right clothes on a farm. “She probably picked that up from living on the farm as we always remind the kids that they are not allowed out to play on the farm without long pants, hat and sunscreen.” Kelly said her daughter spends hours on creating the artwork and that she has patience that her brothers don’t have. “It took a couple days to create it as she did a few rough copies before submitting her final artwork,” she said. “Her inspiration comes from living on a dairy farm, literally she is told day in or day out about farm safety.” Felicity has won $500 for her school and $250 for herself, which she is planning on using to buy a new pushbike. According to a Workplace Health and Safety Queensland spokesperson “The Farm Safety calendar competition raises awareness among primary school students and their communities of common hazards on farms and other rural properties,” they wrote. “The published calendar is an opportunity for safety messages to be prominently displayed in the home throughout the year, reminding Queenslanders of all ages to work and play safely on farm properties.” Thirty thousand free hard copies of the 2021 calendar will be distributed to Queenslanders from October.

Members of the Tablelands Patrol Group made a trip to Georgetown last Tuesday, September 29 on Police Remembrance Day and dedicated a memorial plaque to Constable Casey Blain who was killed in 2013 while on duty.

Police pause and remember

LAST Tuesday, September 29 police officers across Australia paused in remembrance for their brothers and sisters in arms who gave their life performing their duties. Wreaths were laid and graves were visited on the annual day set aside to remember the sacrifice and the dangers that officers face every day on the force. This year due to COVID-19

the regular marches and public services had to be replaced in favour of more COVID-19 safe and in house events. Members of the Tablelands Patrol Group made the trip 30km east of Georgetown to dedicate a memorial plaque to Constable Casey Blain who was tragically killed on duty in 2013. Tablelands Patrol Group Acting Inspector Greg Giles

dedicated the service not only to Constable Casey’s sacrifice, but to all officers who have died performing their duties. “A memorial plaque has been dedicated to the rest stop to honour his service and life,” he said. “This service honours all Police Officers that have died performing their duty in Australia and the Western Pacific.”

First they were delayed getting the NBN and internet connected, then just as they were about ready to open their doors COVID hit and forced the closure of venues across Australia. Advocate and Welfare Officer of the RSL John Hartley said they were fortunate not to open before COVID. “We would hate to have hired staff and then had to have let them go,” he said. “So far the community has been very supportive, there’s people coming to visit who are looking for a change of food or location from where they would normally eat or drink.” The chef at the RSL is Dan Daw who has won the Taste of

the Tablelands four times. “We have a suggestion and feedback box and so far the food has been rated as 5 out of 5,” John said. “We’ve also had a few organisations come in to have meetings and they have given us positive feedback.” The new RSL has given jobs to at least seven people including a Manager and Chef and Mr Hartley said they had some big plans moving forward including Melbourne Cup, Remembrance Day and live entertainment. “We are going to have a few solo singers come in and play in a few weeks and we are going to start having members draws and meat tray raffles.” Membership is only 10 dollars a year and John said that you don’t need to become a member if you’re just dropping in for a

meal. “We would really love people to join up and become a member,” he said. “Especially younger veterans, we are all getting on and we need the younger guys come forward and become part of the club.” “It’s been a long time coming but we are really happy to be finally open.” Mr Hartley who is a returned serviceman himself said he can also offer help to widows and the children of servicemen and women through the RSL subbranch. “I can help people manage compensation, pensions, education and accommodation.” The Atherton RSL is open seven days a week from 10am at 2 Railway Lane Atherton, besides the Men’s Shed.

Flood gauges for TRC

Tablelands Regional Council has recently installed six new early warning flood gauges across the council area.

THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has taken a step towards protecting its residents against floods with the installation of six early warning flood gauges across the Tablelands. In partnership with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) TRC has installed new rain gauges at Malanda, Bromfield Swamp, Wondecla, Wild River, Wongabel and Scrubby Creek. The gauges were installed under the Tablelands Flood Warning Intelligence Project

with each gauge consisting of a tipping bucket rain gauge, solar panel and modem. Local Disaster Management Group Chair Bernie Wilce believes that with these new rain gauges installed the community is in a better position to adapt and react to flash floods. “The community is now in a much better position to identify and adapt to the rapidly changing nature of flash flooding which, in turn, enhances our resilience to disasters,” he said. “As part of the project we

also installed a camera and seepage monitor on the Wild River Dam, in heavy rain and flooding situations we can use the camera to monitor the dam. “As we all know, knowledge is power, so having this information available to us and the public, allows for informed decisions.” The gauges feed information into the BOM website and contribute to the broader flood waring gauge network in Queensland.

Savannah success SUCCESS: Nipper Brown, Lee Kernaghan and organiser James Dein from Sound Australia.

ORGANISERS of The Savannah Summer Series have hailed the world’s first COVID-Safe country music festival a success as 1500 country music fans boot scooted with headliner Lee

Kernaghan on Friday night at the Mareeba Rodeo grounds. Originally scheduled for the Queen’s Birthday Weekend in 2020, Savannah in The Round was postponed during the COV-

ID-19 outbreak and reimagined as the Savannah Summer Series. Organiser James Dein, from Sound Australia said he was blown away by the vibe and how well behaved everyone was.

“We were delighted it couldn’t have gone better we achieved our target of 1500 people,” he said. “People were very well behaved, there were no reported

incidents, it was a great family vibe.” “Friday’s event allows us to refine our event for next year, as we are still not sure if there will be Covid restrictions this time next year.” Organisers have announced that the 2021 Savannah In The Round festival will take place on October 1-3 in Mareeba, with a strong focus on Australian country music talent. “There’s never been a more important time for Australia to get behind its artists and its local communities,” said Mr Dein. “Savannah in the Round was always conceived as an event to bring the Tropical North Queensland community together, as well as drive interstate tourism and shine a light on the amazing talent this country has to offer. “We couldn’t think of anywhere on earth that we’d rather be hosting the next major country music event, than Australia’s new home of country music, Tropical North Queensland.” Packed exclusively with talent from around Australia, the 2021 event will welcome multi award-winning country music artist, Kasey Chambers as well as the return of Lee Kernaghan and Casey Barnes, along with country music royalty John Williamson and aussie favourites Busby Marou. The McClymonts will also make the trip up north with Graeme Connors, Troy CassarDaley, The Wolfe Brothers, Fan-

ny Lumsden, James Blundell, The Buckleys and more. “We have now given people a full 12 months to book their holidays and fly in from interstate or even new Zealand,” Mr Dein said. “We are also having some very positive talks with an international star in Nashville that we are hoping we can add to the line-up once we have more certainty about the border situation.” Mr Dein said it was a great turn out for their first event, but they are hoping for bigger and better in the future. “The venue has the capacity to fit 15,000 people but being realistic with next years line up six to eight thousand people should be achievable.” Tourism Minister Kate Jones said confirmation the event would go ahead in 2021 was great news for Far North Queensland as the tourism and events industry continued to face the effects of COVID-19. “Major events pump millions of dollars into local businesses and support local jobs. They’re crucial to the economic recovery of the Far North,” Ms Jones said. “Savannah in The Round will play an important role in tourism recovery locally, delivering a great boost for the tourism industry when it’s needed most. Strong and stable – Field Days ready for a big 2021 NORTHERN Australia’s largest agricultural Field Days is ready for any obstacle 2021 may bring, promising exhibitors and visitors alike the strongest event in history. Less than seven months out from the iconic three day event, organisers have been working around the clock to ensure it’s business as usual, giving everyone full confidence that the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days will go ahead on May 26, 27 and 28 at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds. New Rotary FNQ Field Days Chair, Trevor Duncan, believes that the experienced volunteer committee and event history places the 2021 exhibition in the best position to be strongest to date. “We are strong and stable and ready for next year,” Mr Duncan said. “The continued growth of the FNQ Field Days, in both exhibitor bookings and attendance numbers, has proven that these Field Days are the most sought after in Northern Australia.” Site bookings will be opening soon and exhibitors are assured that event and site cancellation plans and policies are in place to protect the event and exhibitors. “Exhibitors can book their sites with confidence knowing

everything has been thought of in terms of COVID-Safe guidelines and event procedures,” Mr Duncan said. The biennial event attracts local, intrastate and interstate exhibitors and visitors with attendance numbers in 2019 exceeding 20,000.

“The continued growth of the event has proven that these Field Days are the most sought after in Northern Australia.” “We know how vital the Field Days are to the exhibitors, the economy and our communities and after what 2020 has thrown at us we are hard at work planning to ensure the 2021 event meets the expectations of site exhibitors, patrons and visitors and a new COVID-Safe way,” Mr Duncan said. 2021 will see a strong focus around three key themes. Rural Strong - Rural Australia is open for business, Are You Bogged Mate - helping country blokes talk about mental health and suicide while spreading awareness

about depression in the bush and lastly Community Spirit – we all love and are proud of where we live. “In addition to our key themes we have a host of other exciting changes and attractions in store,” Mr Duncan said. “We boast the greatest lineup of agricultural products and services and we are always thinking of new ways to raise the bar. “Some of the things to look forward to next year include working machinery demonstrations, a new ladies lane, a dedicated business networking tent and an exhibitor BBQ to foster stronger working relations, just to name a few. “We want to make each and every Field Days bigger and better than the last.” Online site bookings will be opening soon and the committee expects the demand to be high once again. “2019 sold out and we expect 2021 to be the same,” Mr Duncan said. The Rotary FNQ Field Days is a joint initiative of the Rotary Clubs of Atherton and Mareeba. The Field Days attracts hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors who, in turn, help raise money for the local communities the event supports.

Past Field Days chair and organising committee member Ida Portella with 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days Chair Trevor Duncan are excited for Northern Australia’s largest Field Days in May next year..

ALH Group takes over Gateway Hotel THE historic Gateway Hotel in Mareeba has been sold to the Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (ALH). It’s understood that the hotel was sold to the ALH group via Savills Hotel’s in Brisbane. The hotel had been owned by the Howe family since 2015, with the family carrying out extensive renovations over the past few years. According to Savills, the family will go back to focusing on its farming operations. Savills Senior Executive Christian Tsalikis said he approached the Howe family to see if they

were interested in selling. “I called the Howe family who said I could present it to a few interested parties and it coincided with ALH who are looking at expanding into areas where they currently don’t have a presence,” he said “ALH were interested due to the return on investment, it ticks a lot of boxes that they (ALH) look for which is, good retail in a good town where they didn’t have a presence.” The venue has gone by a few different names over the years including Dunlops, The Highlander, and the Peninsula.

According to David Curry Head of Regulatory and Corporate Affairs at the ALH Group “We took over the hotel on Monday 21st September 2020, we were pleased to acquire this wonderful property and look forward to continuing to welcome locals and visitors alike,” he said “The Gateway certainly met our good pubs in great locations acquisition criteria.” The ALH group is the hotel division of Woolworths and owns 300 licensed venues and over 550 retail liquor outlets including Dan Murphys and BWS.

Mobil ready to service in November

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month. There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff. It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.

The Mobil service station in Mareeba is on track for a late November reopening.

THE old Mobil service station on the corner of Byrnes and Herberton Street has been undergoing a massive renovation and is due to be completed in late November. Construction started on tearing down the old station and the adjacent house on Byrnes Street in May with plans to rebuild it into a bigger and better station. The new Mobil service station will offer a better forecourt layout for both trucks and cars, better parking, a massively increased shop range and a full modern café food service.

Rob Mahoney, Retail General Manager from Trinity Petroleum is excited for the station to be on track. “We have a lot of returning staff to the new station along with some new local staff due to our recruitment drive,” he said. “We certainly want as many local staff as we can get. “It’s exciting and we are expecting to have the new site open for trade by the end of November.” The newly renovated service station and café will be operating 24 hours a day.

Historic pack tour visits local pubs across the Tablelands A PACK team is currently participating in a unique, scenic and historic tour of the Atherton Tablelands visiting the regions oldest and most well-known pubs. The tour will not be your conventional hike, this tour will be taking along pack animals such as donkeys loaded up with food and equipment. The pack walk commenced on Sunday, October 4 and is set to run until this Friday, October 9 with the Barron Valley Hotel, The Yungaburra Peeramon and the Malanda Pub all scheduled stops. The walk is taking as many back roads as possible and cutting through a number of land-

owners properties all against the beautiful rainforest and agricultural scenery found on the Atherton Tablelands. Tim Daniel is the owner of Wilderness Expeditions and was excited to take people on a pack tour of his local area and to see the culture of Queensland reflected in the pubs visited. “This walk is our first accommodated tour with the evolving demand for more comfort and not living under canvas,” he said. “This walk shows off many attributes of the Atherton Tablelands while distributing revenue amongst a number of businesses.

Yowie a folklore no more?

Photos have emerged of a massive poo on a toppled ant hill that Yowie Hunters are saying is proof of the ancient folklores existence.

A MEMBER of the Tablelands Yowie Sightings Facebook group has shared an image of what they believe to be solid proof of a Yowie’s existence, a huge poo on a termite mound. The photo was taken on the Einsleigh River by a bushwalker and was subsequently shared and has now gone viral amongst Yowie hunters. The Yowie is an Australian creature buried in deep folklore and ancient Aboriginal oral history, it resembles Americas infamous Bigfoot. Although no solid proof of the Yowie existence has ever been found, numerous bushwalkers in remote parts of the

country claim to see them every year. Founder of the Tablelands Yowie Sightings Facebook group Lionel Carroll was astounded when he first saw the photos and heard the story. “There is a lot of criticism around those photos of the poo but it speaks for itself, it’s too big of a scat to be human,” he said. “I’ve never heard of an animal knock the head off an ant mound to take a poo before. “If we get it tested we can’t say it’s a Yowie but we can eliminate everything else on the face of the earth.”

“This walk is geared towards those who are interested in bush walking and would enjoy the walks in places like the Himalayas, Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa or Europe.” According to Mr Daniel a pack team has not visited Yungaburra since the Australian Army’s Pack Transport Company trained in the region in 1943. After this walk there are plans to conduct other historical focused pack walks across the region including retracing the steps of two notable explores, Ludwig Leichardt and Edmund Kennedy who passed through in 1845 and 1848 respectively.

Raising awareness to keep kids safe QUEENSLAND Child Protection Week was recognised at Anzac Park in Mareeba on Friday, October 2. Community organisations came together to highlight the importance of keeping our kids safe in our community. The day included pikelets for all, displays and handmade paper lanters to ‘shine a light for

children’. The organisations were on hand to raise the profile of all issues connected with child protection, including child abuse prevention, treatment, research, education, service provision and support for children, young people and families. The aim of the week is to create a state-wide umbrella for

child protection allowing government and non-government agencies to present a cooperative and coordinated community oriented campaign. The object of the day was to support and value professionals and volunteer child protection workers by providing 'best practice' training and a forum to exchange ideas and information.

Rally raises funds for rare disease ON Saturday October 3, 40 cars with more than 120 people from across Far North Queensland took off in a rally with a difference. The Inaugural Smokey Blue Rally started off at four different locations across the Tablelands with drivers being able to choose their own adventure and route. Organiser of the rally Nicola Baker said one of the aims was to give rally participants the chance to visit different towns along the way with all participants ending their rally experience at Undara. “There are eleven towns in total they can visit and they have to visit a minimum of 5,” she said. “We want people out of their cars and looking around the towns and hopefully spending a few dollars in each town.” The event was also a fund raiser for Moyamoya disease, a rare, progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain. “Early estimates are that we have raised about $6000 dollars but we are still counting,” Nicola said. Nicola’s 16-year-old son Jed, suffers from Moyamoya and she said that money raised from the rally will be put back into the charity so that they can help other families that have been affected by Moyamoya. “The aim of the rally was to raise funds for the charity while at the same time getting the rally participants to visit towns and inject some money back into local communities,” Nicola said. The rally ended at Undara on Saturday night where participants got to party with Dr Elephant and DJ Shacks. “On Sunday we got up and enjoyed the bush breakfast and then we celebrated again with a recovery party and Dr Elephant,” Nicola said. “It was such a great weekend, we want to thank all the participants and sponsors and we are now planning next year’s rally.”

Funding awarded to gather feral pig data

Millaa Millaa Garden Club Vice-President Jenny Bloom and Bob Garner and Peter Hitzke with the Eleanor McLeod award that was awarded to the club last Tuesday for their community spirit and involvement.

Millaa Millaa green thumbs awarded THE Millaa Millaa Garden Club has had their tireless work in their community parks recognised after they received the Eleanor McLeod Award last Tuesday, September 29. The award was given by the Garden Clubs of Australia (GCA), an umbrella organisation that provides encouragement and support to over 700 gardening clubs across Aus-

tralia. To be eligible for this award a club must have demonstrated involvement in both practical and educational projects that benefit the wider community. The Millaa Millaa Garden Club has been taking care of the public gardens in the parks across Millaa Millaa since it was founded in 2006. Jenny Bloom, Vice-Presi-

dent of the Millaa Millaa Garden Club was pleasantly surprised when she learned of the club winning the award. “It feels great to win this award it is a real thrill,” she said. “We are a very small club compared with some of the other 700 clubs that are under the GCA . “So when we nominated for

the award we really didn’t think we had any chance to win.” The garden club is currently undergoing a massive renovation project to replace many of their gardens with more native plants and flowers to encourage more native life to return to these gardens. There are only eight active members out of the 23 registered members of the Milllaa

Millaa Garden Club and Mrs Bloom believes that this low number is why they won the award “I believe the reason we won is because we are such a small club and what we achieve being a small club,” Mrs Bloom said. “Millaa Millaa has very good community spirit but with this award will probably boost that spirit even more.”

BARRON Catchment Care (BCC) has received a leg up in their feral pig data collection activities through the National Landcare Program. Following BCC’s information seminar in 2019, they applied for Government funding to purchase electronically monitored collars to help gather essential data on feral pig locations and movement. This project monitors feral pig behaviour in the rainforest and farming communities of the Atherton Tablelands. GPS Tracking will deliver the monitoring program for BCC and will introduce trapping methods which are new to Australia. An open day with guest speaker and feral pig expert Darren Marshall, will be held at O’Halloran’s Hill Atherton next Thursday, October 15 at 3.30pm. The Jazzuleles are just one of the acts who will be performing at this year’s Tablelands Folk Festival.

THE Tablelands Folk Festival is returning to Yungaburra in a new socially distanced weekend of fun. From October 23 to 25, Yungaburra will come alive with some of the best artists from across Queensland. Going into their 40th year in 2021 and in honour of the festival’s amazing heritage as well as border closures, the Tablelands Folk Festival is presenting a totally Queensland line-up this year. Festival Program Director Bronwyn Hodgkins said they are proud to be featuring some of the best musicians, singers, songwriters, poets and bands that Queensland has to offer. “As well as performances there’s a full program of concerts and workshops as well as a poet’s breakfast and a song writing competition,” she said. “The committee has en-

sured that the event will be a COVID-Safe as we have put social distancing measures in place and will be providing hand sanitiser at every venue, while still ensuring everyone will have a bloody good time. “We are also still calling for volunteers to help set up, clean up, pack down, MC, door sit and plenty of other roles. It’s a great way to join the festival family and meet new friends whilst enjoying an iconic Queensland event.” Some of the headline acts include, Cachicamo Latin Harp, Gypsy Rumble, Juju Moon, The Hillbilly Goats, The Jazzuleles and Tessa Devine. Greatest movies of the decades MOVIES provide us an escape from reality and throw us into a world where we can experience things we never would have dreamed of. Over the years movie making has developed from old westerns to the now fully animated and digital movie effects. Some curious cats over at OnBuy.com decided to see which movies rated the best for their year and decade. Their research had them discover the greatest

movies of their time going all the way back to 1968 all the way up to 2019. The 70’s was taken away by the beautiful story of the Godfather with

a high score of 9.2/10 on IMDb. Star Wars: Episode V –

The Empire Strikes Back flew in and blasted the competition to be the best movie of the 80’s scoring 8.7/10. The 90’s not only saw the greatest movie of its decade, but the best movie of all time according to IMDb with Shawshank Redemption coming in with a 9.3/10 rating Christopher Nolan took out both the noughties and the 10’s with his smashing hits, The Dark Night and Inception rating 9/10 and 8.8/10 respectively.

ENTERTAINMENT Debut success

MAREEBA’S Michael Bryce has had a breakout performance with his first time directing at the Mareeba Theatre Group over the past two weekends. ‘Drinking Habits’ was Michael’s poison and he chose a young cast of up and coming actors to bring his vision to life. Running over the last weekend of September and the first weekend of October Michael’s show was booked out before he could say “book your tickets now”. “I have discovered quite a bit about how much effort and responsibility goes into putting on a play. Luckily I have been supported by other Mareeba Theatre Group members, who have assisted whenever asked,” Michael said. “I’ve been threatening to direct a play for a few years now, and the need to offer some roles of substance for these fine young actors was the driving force for me to finally do something about it. “This coincided with the chance discovery of a very funny script that is unusually balanced and gives them all a chance to show their wares, all of our cast have worked hard really brought my vision to life.”

‘Drinking Habits’ at Mareeba Theatre Group was a hit with locals.

ENTERTAINMENT The Malanda Theatre Company have been preparing since the beginning of the year. The play ‘Sorting out Rachel’ opens on October 16.

Malanda presents first comedy drama of 2020 THE Malanda Theatre Company has been gearing up for the past nine months to bring to you their newest play, Sorting out Rachel. Sorting out Rachel comes from the mind of Australian playwright David Williamson adapted by Malanda Theatre Company’s Graham Harrington who is directing the play. The play follows the journey of Rachel, a teenager full of angst who is rebelling against her mother and father, the play really kicks off when Rachel’s grandfather enters the picture and what ensues is play filled with lots of laughs and serious notes all touching on relevant social

issues. The cast have been preparing for the play since the beginning of the year in February and are now ready to go with opening night on Friday, October 16 at the Majestic Theatre in Malanda. Mr Harrington is excited to get the play out for the public to see and ensures it will be a good night for the whole family. “Our actors are ready to go and are very excited,” he said. “One of our actors had to pull out so we had to recast and rehearse again. “It’s a comedy drama with strong current social issues.”

ON LAND the

Katter goes bananas to inspire farm work A FEW may say that Bob Katter went bananas years ago, but the expected labour shortage on farms prompted the 75-year-old MP to spend a day working on the land. Mr Katter and KAP candidate Tankia Parker offered their services to the Gilbert Banana Farm in Mareeba in the hope that their example would inspire young

Australians to gain employment on Australian farms. “Some people say I’ve been going bananas for a while now,’’ Mr Katter said. “Well, who could blame me? “There are extraordinary pressures dealing with incompetent Government that can’t even build a single dam.’’ Mr Katter said that if he is 75

and able to lift a bunch of bananas then young people shouldn’t have any problems. “A bunch of bananas is 35 – 40 kilograms but you can adopt a bit of a technique to do it effectively,” he said. “If I can do the hard yakka at 75 then what is the rest of Australia doing?” According to Mr Katter 25 per cent of backpackers in Australia are involved in fruit picking, directly or indirectly leading to a shortage of workers over the next 12 months “We will go from 220,000 backpacker’s pre-Covid, to 20,000 by June next year,’ he said. “It seems to me that it will be very difficult to pick the Australian fruit crop without backpackers.” Tanika Parker KAP candidate for Cook said that lugging bananas was hard but rewarding work. “It was hard work but it was rewarding and I learned so much from the experience,” she said “I am 100% advocating for school leavers and university students to lend their hand to our primary producers through a gap year. “I thought Bob was going to topple over with the first bunch that he carried, but he was adamant that he wouldn’t let go of it.”

LETTERS to theEDITOR

Labor disasters

IN response to Terry Ayliffe (Letter to the Editor on 29/9/20 The Express) Cook voters certainly have an interesting choice. The only enlightenment I can offer is that you check a few of the possibly forgotten disasters overseen by the Palaszczuk government, to which Ms Lui belongs. Part of a long list which includes – Phone app to help Fat Dogs lose weight $100,000, Uncollectable SPER Debts write offs $191,000,000, Fixing Labor’s Rail Fail $170,660,000, Taxis for Train Drivers $493,033, eHealth Project blowout $256,800,000, QR CCTV Duplications $50,000,000, ASF Spit Project Compensation $13,000,000 ($1.3 Billion), Premier’s personal office budget blowout $290,585, Workcover Qld executives’ overseas junket $47,600, Consultant to recommend name change from DIQ to DJQ $136,000, Labor Giveaway tickets to C’wealth Games $230,000, Government advertising in breach of election commitment $3,480,840, Ministers’ personal staff cost blowouts $1,860,184 and Lady Cilento name change $302,082. There are too many to mention all. Not to mention that this Labor government employs outside consultants to under-

take what one would expect actual Government employees to do. Bev Prescott TOLGA

Time to change

IF all of us work to bring about the changes suggested by Phil Brandel in his opinion piece in The Express, September 30, we would risk achieving a healthier, happier future. Less plastic in landfill, less Carbon Dioxide into the skies, more trees in the landscape, more beautiful corals in the ocean. Such changes which would scrap the dreams of mining giants, would cause politicians to weep over lost royalties, and re-train coal miners into new employment... picking fruit on farms, perhaps, or planting up overgrazed cattle country. Other than crazy lefties no one would welcome changes that cause grandparents to smile as they watch small children playing in a regenerating world. Never fear. The current Labor Government and the hopeful LNP will keep us safe from horrors that only Greens would welcome. Annastacia has just endorsed the start of a new coalmine that will clear Koala habitat and will generate more than twice the weight of CO2 for every tonne of coal

OPINION DURING this crazy year we have been taught a few valuable lessons about ourselves, our health and our country, but have we paid heed to them? We have seen some extraordinary measures rolled out over the past few months that 12 months ago a Liberal Federal Government would never had thought of doing. Things like free childcare, free healthcare through telehealth and a basic universal income have made people sit up and realise that these things are actually good for

that is burned. Wherever in the world it might be burned, all will be able to shelter under an ever thickening blanket of gas. We will all be in it, together. Rupert Russell MOUNT MOLLOY

Pursuit of happiness

IN response to Jerry Micola’s biased and unfair letter from last weeks edition (The Express 23/9/20), where the only thing I agreed with was pushing for the freedom of Australian Journalist Julian Assange. The United States of America, since the end of World War II, has been the world’s security force, albeit a highly controversial one. A strong peacemaker that is loved and admired by most of us with a love of freedom and democracy, especially in the South Pacific and Australia. They have protected us all, for basically the last 75 years and we have had a relatively peaceful existence here in Australia and the world. Well, those liberties are in peril. The pursuit of happiness is dependent on everything this November, with the upcoming US Elections. The Left, Black Lives Matter and their brown shirt brigade, Antifa are openly stating they will burn the country

With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1

the economy. Look at a few other countries in the world that haven’t rolled out some of the above measures and you’ll see that they’re not fairing so well. We have running water; electricity and access to medicine and food. We have also realised (I hope) that doctors and nurses and teachers are far more important than sports stars and reality TV contestants. It almost seems like we have woken up in a socialist’s dream, where people actually are more important

down, if they do not win. What kind of democracy, do these so called progressives want? Defunding the police? Opening up the borders to mass immigration? The Green New Deal? Globalisation and the adoption of United Nations Agenda 2030? Total domination of the narrative and free speech? This is totalitarian thinking. Communism or Socialism, what’s the difference? Bill Schutz Mount Sheridan

Abortion legislation

I AM writing to you and your readers about the Termination of Pregnancy (abortion) Legislation passed by the current Queensland government in 2018. To summarise the current law, abortion is available for any reason up until 22 weeks of pregnancy. After 22 weeks, abortion is allowed for a wide range of reasons, being “all relevant medical circumstances and the woman’s current and future physical, psychological and social circumstances”. The forthcoming election provides our only opportunity for the next four years to challenge this law and make some worthwhile changes. Whilst Cherish Life Qld does not agree with any abortion, we are very willing to work to

have your say. .

Email: editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au reduce the impact of this legislation. In order to make any change possible, there has to be a groundswell of support for a pro-life vote. In response to a question on the LNP, KAP and One Nation all committing to review Queensland’s abortion law, Catholic Archbishop Coleridge said: “My thoughts were made very clear when the debate on abortion was going in the state, and the church’s position is unequivocal on it. I think the legislation that was passed was seriously mistaken. I’ve made no secret in that. Therefore, I would support legislative change.” Carol O’Connell President, Atherton Tablelands Cherish Life Qld Branch

Make towns beautiful

I sympathise with Bruce McNamee about his disappointment at the regression of Mareeba. It seems to be an Australian obsession to knock down lovely old buildings and cut down big trees, that take so long to grow and provide shelter to wildlife and people alike. Two years ago a row of 94 year old Camphor Laurels were cut down in Mary St, Malanda, in spite of vigorous local opposition. They were

beautiful trees, full of ferns and birds, but council would not be dissuaded. Now the street looks bare and the sun beats down in the summer and people sit in their cars with the air conditioning on where once they parked in natural shade. When is this attitude going to change and trees are recognised as essential to a healthy environment? Nature steps, parks, green space is what makes a town beautiful, not carparks. Sharon Northage MALANDA

Highway mayhem

WE were returning to Cairns on Sunday (27/9) afternoon and what a debacle it was. We were stuck in a traffic queue near the Emerald Creek Ice-creamery. It was an absolute shambles; surely someone should’ve had the hindsight to have someone physically manning the traffic lights at the Termite shop? The traffic heading towards Mareeba was favoured with at best 10 cars coming through in that direction, where as we were stuck in kilometres of traffic barely moving. Common-sense seriously lacking given the closure of the Port Douglas roads for Ironman. Come on Main Roads get your act together. Tanya Burke CAIRNS

Have we learnt anything?

than profit and where free everyday services helps to free up peoples wallets and the economy. But the capitalists are crying foul over the leg up some of the less privileged have been getting lately. Capitalism that is based on the motives of profit and private ownership is supposed to provide the best economic outcome for everybody. As the owners of industry and commerce enrich themselves, they are supposed to provide employment for the rest of the

population. Everyone shares in economic growth, even if owners reap a greater share. The metaphor “a rising tide lifts all boats” describes how capitalism should work. Proponents of socialism argue that only the owners of capital profit from such a system. The great majority of people labour for the profit of a few. They propose an economic system based on social ownership and more equal distribution of profits. It’s a common mistake of both left and right to talk about capitalism and social-

ism as if there were only two choices. One-party socialist systems have not worked well over the past century. Capitalism as practiced in the United States and many other nations has mainly benefitted those who already are rich. Instead the nations in which all citizens gain from economic growth have combined elements of market economies, private ownership and political policies that mitigate inequality. In countries where there is free public health care, nearly

free university education, stronger progressive taxation, higher minimum wages and inclusion of trade unions or employees in corporate decision-making result in much lower inequality and much happier populations. Sometimes the most important life lessons are the ones that we have to learn the hard way. ■ Got an opinion? email us editorial@ theexpressnews paper.com.au

Oct 24 to Nov 22 Disputes may start because of a lack of honesty. You can get a lot done if you get your hands on the right equipment. Your involvement in organisational events could open doors to new and exciting opportunities.

You will meet new romantic partners through the company you keep. If you haven’t already, consider starting your own business. Outbursts of passion may cause arguments with your mate.

You can make money if you concentrate on producing services that will make domestic chores easier. It is best not to upset the apple cart if you learn information that may damage a colleague’s reputation.

Don’t overindulge in anyway. You might get behind if you spend too much time debating senseless issues. Deception and doubts may surround your involvement with friends and relatives.

Aug 23 to Sept 23 Arguments will flare up if you get backed into an emotional corner. You can spend a passionate evening with someone you cherish if you make your plans early. Try not to lend or borrow money or belongings today.

Implement your ideas into your projects at work. Do not blow situations out of proportion. Think twice before eating spicy foods; you may have problems with your stomach.

1. In a high-speed blender or food processor, add your unsweetened shredded coconut with dried cherries and blend until just mixed. Pour into a large mixing bowl and set aside. 2. In a microwave safe bowl or stovetop, melt your coconut butter with maple syrup. Pour into the dry mixture and mix until well combined. 3. Transfer to a lined 8 x 8-inch pan and press firmly in place. Freeze for 20-30 minutes, or until firm. 4. Once firm, use a lightly wet, sharp knife and slice into 20 bars. 5. Melt your chocolate chips of choice. Moving quickly, use two forks to dip each cherry coconut bar in the melted chocolate and ensure it is evenly coated. 6. The Atherton hockey family is very supportive and we love new players to the game; and urge those who haven't picked up a stick for a few years, or even twenty years to get back into hockey. If you have never played before, that’s ok. There is plenty of support and assistance for all ages, stages and abilities. If you're aged from 12 to 82, we want you. Hockey is competitive, but more importantly we want people to have fun, improve your fitness, make friends and enjoy the social aspects of team sport. Important skills are practiced and developed with physical activity. Team sports encourage cooperation and respect for others. The great thing about Hockey is it's at the same place and time each week. Summer sixes for 2020 will be played for 8 weeks with a school holiday break and then a further 8 weeks at the beginning of the year. Hockey is a cheap sport in comparison to many others, once you pay the season fee of just $110 for 16 games there are no other on-going costs. That is less than $10/week for a lot of fun. Those players already registered for 2020 have only $40 to pay for the summer sixes season for insurance and

your existing fees in credit roll over to 2021. So what are you waiting for, register today. We have online registration and a payment system for all players, which can be done at any time. Go to www. revolutionise.com/atha/registration. We will be there on the day to answer questions and assist people through the process if they are new to hockey. We invite all captains and coaches to attend on the day to submit their teams to Atherton Tableland Hockey Association, but if you don’t have a team, don't fear we will

find one for you. We urge you to follow us on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/athertontablelandshockeyassociation/ Check out our website http:// www.athertonhockey.com.au/ to keep up to date with the latest info. Please don't hesitate to contact us through the messenger function on Facebook or email us for more information. See you on the field. Shirley Godfrey ATHA President

Breaking new heights at Taekwondo

Xtrheem Taekwondo Master Instructor Phil Quayle with Gerard Kath after his Black Belt grading in September.

XTRHEEM Taekwondo added Gerard Kath (Ged) to their list of successful black belt recipients after his recent grading in September. The 39 year old farmer and father of four was amongst the 27 members in attendance for

their grading where Mr Kath applied for his 1st Dan Black Belt grading. Mr Kath performed several Taekwondo attacking and defensive moves, rounds of free sparring against multiple attackers and a series of 8 dynamic

board breaks. Master Instructor Phil Quayle was proud of Mr Kath’s performance and his work ethic leading up to his grading. “Ged Kath was definitely ready for his Black Belt,” he said. “Remarkably Ged has achieved the level of 1st Dan Black Belt in two years of dedicated training, which is a short period of time to achieve this standard. “Ged’s keenness to learn coupled with his dedication to attending regular training twice a week with 100% effort, were the driving forces attributing to his success.” Mr Kath’s six year old son James also attends regular training with his father and was graded to yellow tip on the same night his father received his 1st Dan.

The Mareeba Cricket Club will be entering their 2020 season on a high after their win over Innisfail on Sunday for the Black Dog Day Games.

Mareeba cricketers primed for 2020 season MAREEBA Cricket Club will be entering their season on a high after winning two from two of their recent Black Dog Day games with the last one being played on Sunday. On a hot and humid day the Mareeba cricketers went out to face an Innisfail side last Sun-

day with both teams boasting a mix of senior players. Mareeba went in first to bat and put up a good total of 141 before being bowled out with Captain Brenden Payne leading the way with his 35 runs. Innisfail looked to chase down the total in style but were

cut 5 runs short by the Mareeba bowling attack with them finishing all out for 137 giving Mareeba the victory. The new season kicks off this weekend with Mareeba seconds facing Atherton at home at Borzi Park and thirds facing off against Norths.

Get fit for free TABLELANDS Regional Council’s (TRC) Live Life Get Active program has been extended to Ravenshoe. “The camps in Atherton and Malanda have been very popular and we have recently been able to secure a trainer for Ravenshoe,” said TRC Councillor Annette Haydon. “The weekly program of

cross training and yoga helps develop cardio capacity and improve strength, toning, balance and flexibility. “In addition to the program that is delivered by an accredited trainer, participants will also receive access to an online fitness platform and a free nutritional program with easy-to-follow recipes, videos and blogs.

“The free 45min sessions start at 6.30am on October 15 and will run Monday to Friday for 20 weeks during the school term at the Saint Teresa’s Primary School oval. “Registration is essential so head to livelifegetactive.com to lock in your place.” A Covid Safe plan is in place for this activity.

Bullride sold out success THE Great Northern Bullriding Series hit the ground running last weekend with one of their biggest events to date. The sold out bullride was a huge success with non stop action in the arena. With the bulls raring and raging to go not many riders stood a chance except for current leader of the 2020 title, Raymond Provost who held his own and really showed why he is one of the top bull riders in the country. With over 2000 people attending, the numbers were well over the expectations of organiser Peter Brown. “The bulls dominated the night because they were just too

fresh,” he said. “Raymond put on one of the best rides I’ve seen on a really good bull. “It all went well, Dee Jaye Bux played into the wee hours of the night and no one got any sleep.” With only 2200 tickets up for sale Mr Brown said that they could have doubled that number over the weekend with more than 4000 people eager to see the bulls bucking. With some restrictions easing last Friday people attending the event were able to stand around the bar and have a beer which was a welcome change for many.

WITH four unanswered goals the Mareeba Bulls Premier Reserves clinched the FNQ Football Premiership on Saturday night at Pennell Field, Trinity Beach. The team has now booked their bus trip to Townsville for a crack at the Crad Evans Shield in November. Against a lackluster Marlin Coast Rangers outfit, the Bulls had only one thing in mind and that was Townsville. Damian Wildman, scored twice to enhance his prospects of top goal scorer for the season with Justin Sabbadin and Steve Cater putting the icing on the cake. Coach Dennis Allen was full of praise for the team, especially after winning back to back premierships backing up from last year with a match to spare. “I’m not going to say too much, but we have an opportunity to give the treble another

shake this year and with this group of players we should get close to it,” he said. In the Premier Men’s match against Marlin Coast (MCR), the Bulls had a nervous but composed opening period, but the nerves were put to rest in the fourteenth minute when Dylan Cummings put away the first goal of the match. It was plain sailing from then on as the Rangers showed why they were at the bottom of the table. The Bulls put the game to bed in the seventy fourth minute when Dean Alterio put the game beyond reach. Mareeba has a tricky final match next weekend at home against Premiers Edge Hill United but should make the last four regardless of the result to see them in the finals. In other matches the Premier Ladies had a 6-3 win over JCU

with Kalinau scoring four and Cater the other two and are now set to play finals football again this season. A loss to MCR in the Youth Division puts the young bulls premiership hopes in tatters and will need to win next weekend and hope other results go their way to secure the premiership for 2020. The Men’s Second Division had a 3-0 win over the Leichhardt Lions while the Men’s Third Division had a 3-2 loss to the Lions but will still see finals football this season. The Ladies Premier Reserves won 3-1 against JCU and the Mareeba Colts had a 5-2 win over the Atherton Eagles. The final round of all competitions will be played out this weekend with the Bulls hosing the Edge Hill Tigers on Saturday.
