Paton’s win best Tablelands garden THE winners of the much anticipated and eagerly contested Tablelands Garden Competition were announced last Wednesday, with Atherton gardener Sandra Paton taking out the major award. With a high level of entries, the judging panel this year consisted of Yungaburra resident and former landscape gardener Elizabeth Hamilton-Shaw and Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew. Deputy Mayor Cardew said he was impressed with the number and range of entries. “We received 19 nominations from across the region and judging was really tough because the gardens were all of high calibre.” he said. “There were entries across all six categories, but the rural and edible garden categories were the most popular. “We travelled to Atherton, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Walkamin, Tolga, Kairi, Yungaburra, Peeramon and Herberton to see the gardens. Deputy Mayor Cardew also said it was fantastic to hear the gardeners’ personal stories and get insight into their gardening techniques. “It is amazing to see the difference in the nature in which gardens are put together given the range of climate and locations within our region.” he said. “I have nothing but admiration for the wonderful outdoor spaces our gardeners create. “I congratulate not only the winners of each category, but everyone who nominated and anyone who spends time in their garden.” Judge Elizabeth Hamilton-

Dennis and Sandra Paton in their award winning garden in Atherton.

Shaw, who lived in the UK, PNG, Cape York, Central Australia and Sydney before moving to Yungaburra said “As my background is in the arts, I was particularly interested in the shape, colour, texture and form of plants, and their juxtaposition with each other.” Winner of the Garden of the Year award, Sandra Paton from Atherton, said she didn’t even know she was nominated. “I was shocked and surprised to find out that I won, I didn’t think we had a chance because my husband and my daughter entered the garden and didn’t tell me until after nominations had closed,” she said.

“The judges said my garden was very interesting, we have quite a big garden with a lot interesting memorabilia in the garden.” “I would rather spend time at a nursery than in a dress shop.” Sandra’s husband Denis said his wife was straight out to the garden of a morning and would stay out there until he had to drag her back inside for lunch. “She spends five to six hours a day at least in the garden, she is always pruning and moving things around the garden.” he said. “Both of us would like to say thank you to the TRC, the judges and the sponsors.”

Developer moves ahead with new Mareeba resort DESPITE COVID-19 putting a halt to international travel, one developer is still moving ahead with his dream of an international eco resort in Mareeba. The new development at De Brueys Boutique Winery at 189 Fichera Road, may have slowed due to COVID, but it’s still business as usual with construction in full swing. When completed the new resort, which was designed by CA Architects in Cairns, will consist of 27 blocks of four cabins, totalling 108 rooms. Previously involved with mining operations, owner and developer Benny Wu from China, said as he got older he decided he wanted to do something green for the planet. Speaking via a translater, Mr Wu said he is focused on the resort and a wellbeing centre and wants everything to be Eco. “I have been thinking about a facility like this for the past 20 years,” said Mr Wu. While the initial target demographic was Chinese travellers, that focus has changed slightly due to border closures. The resort will be aimed at 50 per cent Australians and 50 per cent from Asia, with families and retirees now the new target demographic. The winery is also planned

to stay open with another bar to be added inside and to go along with the green theme sewerage, water and solar will all be supplied onsite. They are planning to grow their own food on the property to be used in the future restaurant. While construction has slowed due to the pandemic, Mr Wu estimates they are still employing between 10 and 20 people on-site, down from 50-60 pre-Covid, with another 20 subcontractors coming and going. Once the operation is fully up and running Mr Wu said it’s expected more than 100 people will be working at the resort with the total development cost expected to end up around the $15-20 million dollar mark. Some of the facilities will include a water and sports park, playground, catering facilities, including a restaurant and kitchen. Even though most of the buildings are now in place, Mr Wu and local builder Peter Harris have decided to slow the pace down due to the border closures with Stage 1 of the resort now expected to open at the end of 2021. “Stage 2, we are looking at a water and sports park for locals and interstate travellers, which we will start work on at the end

of 2021,” said Mr Wu. “Stage 3 we are looking at an online gaming facility where people from around the word can come and compete in Esports. “We are hoping to have all three stages finished in the next three years.” The initial planning development application was lodged to the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) in December 2016 and was approved subject to conditions. Some of those conditions include the widening of Fichera Road, a bushfire management plan as well as a minimum five metre wide landscape buffer along Fichera Road. Last week MSC Mayor Angela Toppin met with the developers for an update and said the developers are committed to proceeding with the development on Fichera Road. “Council welcomes any development that will positively contribute to the Shire in terms of stimulating the local economy, supporting and creating employment opportunities,” said Mayor Toppin. “Mareeba Shire is a great place to live, work and invest and I look forward to see this development proceed.”

Aurukun Council by-election THE Electoral Commission of Queensland is delivering a local government by-election for the Aurukun Shire Council following the resignation of a councillor. Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said a draw was conducted to randomly allocate each candidate a position on the ballot paper last week. “There are two candidates vying for the one council position: Dereck Walpo and Jayden Marrott,” Mr Vidgen said. “Electors will have the option of voting early or on election day on October 31, in both the council and State general elections.” Mr Vidgen said Aurukun electors will need to use different voting systems for their State and Council ballot papers. “The State general election is full preferential voting which means numbering every box on the ballot paper in order of preference starting with one. “For the council, it’s firstpast-the-post so electors just need to number at least one box on their ballot paper, as there is only one position being elected.” Mr Vidgen said that under the Local Government Act 2009 (the Act), the council can choose to fill the vacancy through a byelection or through appointment of the runner-up. “The Aurukun Shire Council has resolved to conduct a byelection to fill the vacancy. Information about the Aurukun by-election and the State general election is available at ecq.qld.gov.au

Female candidates targeted BY PHIL BRANDEL A MEMBER of the Mossman and Port Douglas Labor Party branch has been accused of making derogatory comments on social media to female candidates in the seat of Cook in the lead up to the 2020 Queensland election. Gerry W Follows, who resides at Wonga Beach, is a member of the Labor party and was seen sitting at Cynthia Lui’s table at the recent Cook election forum at the Mareeba United Football Club. During the lunch Mr Fallows stood up and asked the candidates a question. This is when Brettlyn “The Beaver” Neal from One Nation acknowledged Mr Follows saying. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the keen interest that you have personally shown on my journey (and Tanika’s as well) with your copious amount of comments on my Facebook page.” This was then followed by comments from KAP candidate Tanika Parker who said “Good on you Beaver, it needed to be said, I was going to say the same thing.” The comments that Ms Neal and Ms Parker were referring to include comments on their personal candidate pages from Mr Follows account such as: “Cynthia will win Cook against a burnt out “Nipper” a washed up lesbian boxer “beaver” (bahaha) and a F....d in the head Mad Katter from Townsville.” “Where I come from we eat beavers not vote for them.” “You really are a f.....g imbecile aren’t you. Do you think these companies bring in every worker, every product, every tonne of concrete? Thank god there’s One Neuron for all these bats…t

crazy f….wits. Please explain, lol.” “You really are a fool! I’m hoping that you haven’t had your bell rung so many times that you can’t read.” In statement about the comments KAP’s Tanika Parker said “This type of behaviour is not tolerated by myself or any other candidates, no one should be subjected to this type of cyber bullying,” she said. “If it does continue to happen I recommend any candidate to take legal action.” Brettlyn “The Beaver” Neal said “At the end of the day negative people fuel my fire for me to want to succeed more,” she said. “If they are spending so much time concentrating on my progress then obviously I am doing something to rattle them, I’m a fighter and I take this stuff in my stride. “The comments are inappropriate, but my main concern is to my partner, Mum or my Nan reading those comments.” Independent candidate Yodie Batzke also claimed that she had been on the receiving end of negative comments from Mr Follows but had banned him from her page, in the last year or so. Mr Follows claimed that he knew nothing about the Facebook comments and that his Facebook account had been hacked. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Mr Follows said when contacted by The Express Newspaper. “What are they talking about, I was hacked about three weeks ago, I got my page taken down and restarted.” Mr Follows said he couldn’t remember the dates that he took his Facebook page down due to hacking. “I did not make those comments; there is a lady from down south who

Pauline Hanson with Brettlyn Neal recently in Mareeba.

hacked my account.” Mr Follows said he didn’t realise what the two candidates were talking about when they mentioned his comments at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce election forum on October 6. “I’ve told you twice I have no idea what you’re talking about.” When asked about any proof about his page being hacked or any contact with Facebook about the hacking Mr Follows said that all the comments from Facebook were deleted when the page was deleted. The above comments were also recently removed from Facebook after The Express started making enquires. Member for Cook Cynthia Lui wrote in a statement “I condemn these comments, and I will always call out comments and behaviour that hurt people.”

In a statement from One Nation leader Pauline Hanson regarding the comments. “I was tempted not to respond to this article because I thought the person had a few mental issues, but the truth is the person is just a coward. The type of coward who would never have the courage to stand up and actually stand for something.” she said. “I chose Beaver to stand for the people of Cook because I’ve seen her deliver outcomes for communities throughout the electorate. If she can deliver positive outcomes outside of parliament, imagine what she can do if she’s elected.” “I’ve just spent another weekend with her here in the Torres Strait and I can tell you right now, she’s enormously respected wherever she goes.”

MSC’s wishlist MSC Mayor Angela Toppin.

WITH the State Election less than two weeks away Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin has published her wish list to whoever gets across the line on October 31. Mayor Angela Toppin’s wishlist includes: • Funding for key water infrastructure (ie. replacement and renewal of underground pipe network, treatment plants and pump stations etc.) • The continuation of the Works for Queensland Program. “The Works for Queensland Program is a fantastic initiative by the Queensland Government that allows Councils to carry out projects across the Shire without burdening the ratepayer,” Cr Toppin said. • Sealing of the Burke Developmental Road between Almaden and Chillagoe. “Council has been advocating for many years to have the road between Almaden and Chillagoe sealed,” Cr Toppin said. “We are very appreciative of the work that has been done to date, however it would be absolutely fantastic to see the last 11kms sealed. “The sealing of the entire stretch of road would be a welcome economic boost for the tourism industry and allow for more efficient transportation of agriculture and livestock.” “The Mareeba Bypass and the sealing of Ootann Road also remain key priorities for Council, and we will continue to advocate for the upgrade of the Kuranda Range Road.”

Mysterious candidates WITH the closure of nominations for candidates on October 11, several runners snuck in at the last minute to put their hand up for the upcoming state election. In the seat of Cook, Stephen (Steve) Goulmy has been nominated as a candidate by Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party. The mysterious Mr Goulmy appears to be a Brisbane based

builder and renovator. No number is listed for Mr Goulmy and several requests by The Express to talk to Mr Goulmy failed. Another contender for the seat of Cook is the Green’s candidate Ms Deby Ruddell who lives in the Daintree. While a press release arrived announcing Ms Ruddell’s nomination, a request to the Queensland Greens Media De-

partment from The Express to speak with Ms Ruddell directly about her nomination was met with a “she is too busy this week, maybe next week.” Another late runner is Mr Chester Tuxford 77, retired and living in Mt Garnet who is running as an independent for the seat of Hill. Mr Tuxford ran as an independent for Hill in 2017 garnering 243 votes, he also ran

The odds are out NOW that the nominations have closed for the upcoming state elections, one key indicator of how voters may be feeling are the odds being offered by online bookmakers. For the Seat of Cook, Labor incumbent Cynthia Lui is still looking like the favourite paying just under two dollars for her election win. • Cynthia Lui (Labor) $1.95 • Tanika Parker (KAP) $3.50 • Ed “Nipper” Brown (LNP) $4.00

• Beaver Neal (ONE) $10.00 • Desmond Tailey (NQF) $21.00 • Yodie Batzke (IND) $67.00 • Deby Ruddell (GNE) $91.00 • Stephen Goulmy (UAP) $91.00 While in Hill Katter Australia incumbent Shane Knuth seems unstoppable paying $1.08. • Shane Knuth (KAP) $1.08 • Nick Cuda (LNP) $7.50 • Michael Hodgkins (Labor)

$12.00 • Jennifer Cox (GNE) $45.00 • Chester Tuxford (IND) $91.00 • Peter Campion (IND) $91.00 • Tara Garozzo (IMOP) $91.00. But if the 2019 Federal Election is anything to go by where it was predicted that Labor simply couldn’t lose, maybe hold off placing your bets just yet.

Celebrating 100 years of Dot’s life

Dot Bullpine celebrated her 100th birthday on September 21.

DOT Bullpine (nee Leinster) who has lived through wars, recessions and depressions, had COVID to contend with restricting the number of guests allowed to visit her at one time when she celebrated her 100th birthday last month. On the day of her birthday, Dot enjoyed a celebration with friends and relatives in the morning and then afternoon tea with the staff at Carinya while reminiscing about ‘the old days’. To celebrate her 100th Dot received letters of congratulations from the Queen, the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and Bob Katter. As well as many well wishes from friends and family via social media and traditional mail. Dot is remembered by many as one of the telepho-

nists on the Atherton Telephone Exchange, back before she was married. Dot married George Bullpine in 1957 after working for her brothers Arthur and Les Leinster. After working for Leinster Brothers for many years, George and Dorothea bought A.W. Neil Wine and Spirit Merchants and traded liquor for a number of years. George and Dot were active members of the Atherton Community. They finally sold their home in Lloyd Street, Atherton in January 2016 and entered Carinya Aged Care Facility. When it comes to changes that she has seen during her 100 years Dot has seen a lot. “There are far too many changes to mention but electricity was one of the biggest changes I’ve seen,” she said.

Even though Dot saw the rolling out of electricity she thinks that modern technology is amazing. “It has its benefits; email is amazing I can now hear from my family over in the UK immediately.” she said. Even though she has hit a century Dot is still independent spending her days reading, working on historical items, visiting other residents and still enjoys cooking. Dot survives her husband and nine siblings, carrying with her many interesting stories of life and the multitude of changes that have occurred over the last century. The Carinya board, management and staff, along with the residents said they “Wished Dot all the best, with many congratulations.”

Full speed ahead on stage two of Atherton Hospital THE second stage of the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment is now underway with significant groundworks and the removal of the old Primary Health Centre on site. As part of stage two of the redevelopment a new purposebuilt four-storey Clinical Servic-

es Building is being constructed and will provide a new emergency department, medical imaging, impatient, maternity and birthing service with private ensuite facilities, operating and endoscopy theatres and a sterilising unit. Atherton Hospital acting Director of Nursing and Facility

Manager Leonie Jennings said the redevelopment will deliver the latest health care facilities for the Tablelands community. “With the opening in September of the new Community, Allied and Mental Health Building on Jack Street, we are progressing well on delivering these

long-awaited improvements for the community and staff,” she said. “Recently we have begun work on the Louise Street side of the hospital grounds with significant cut and fill groundworks to prepare the site for construction. “All effort is being made to

minimise construction impacts to nearby neighbours as we continue to work with our stakeholders.” The old Primary Health Centre is being removed to make way for these state of the art services and an auction will be held by the Friends of the Hospital Foun-

dation to auction off the iconic memorabilia of the building. The charity auction is planned for Saturday, November 28 and will be followed by a cent sale with over 150 prizes. All funds raised will go to support the Atherton Hospital.

Changes to bin collection day

Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies and Mayor Angela Toppin after last weeks MSC meeting where they handed down their first Annual Report since being elected in March.

THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has announced that from Monday, November 2, kerbside collection day for general waste and recycling bins is changing in some areas of Butchers Creek, Glen Allyn, Kureen, Lake Barrine, Lake Eacham, Malanda, Peeramon, Topaz and Upper Barron. A TRC Spokesperson said that “We are doing a letterbox drop but

the community can also check if their collection is changing at www.trc.qld. gov.au/bin-collection-dayis-changing-in-malanda.’ They said. “If their street is not listed, then there is no change to their collection. “We are making these changes to improve the efficiencies of the service to our region.”

First annual report for new MSC AT the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 14, Council tabled its annual report for 2019/20, which was accepted unanimously. It was Mayor Angela Toppin’s first annual report as Mayor and she said she is very proud to continue the previous councils theme of having a sustainable council. “The job of the new council is to ensure that we go forward and sustain this shire,” she said. “We know there is COVID, but we don’t know what impact it is going to have in the future. “We are very fortunate that we have been buoyed by the agriculture industry.” The annual report highlights the Council’s key achievements over the past 12 months, including the organisation’s financial position. Mayor Toppin said she was

also proud of Council’s recent credit rating, being upgraded to sound, with a neutral outlook. “This improved rating by the Queensland Treasury Corporation is reflective of Council’s financial performance, adequate debt serving capacity and sound liquidity levels and instills confidence in the organisation,” Cr Toppin said. During the previous financial year, Council received over $20 million in grant funding to deliver numerous projects across the Shire. “I am extremely grateful to the Queensland and Australian Governments for their continued support allowing Council to enhance the liveability for residents across the Shire,” Cr Toppin said. Projects included the Barang Street pump station upgrade in Kuranda, the Mareeba Airport Redevelopment Project and the expansion at the Mareeba Indus-

trial Park which will strengthen Mareeba’s position as an industrial hub for northern Australia. Mayor Angela Toppin said the capital investment of $24 million reflects Council’s commitment to quality services and infrastructure. “It is vital that we continue to renew and upgrade essential infrastructure across the Shire. This is why Council invested $7.7 million for roads, $3.7 million for water and $1 million for wastewater in 201920,” she said. “Water security continues to be a major focus of Council with a water strategy and asset management plan being undertaken to identify risks and opportunities in relation to current and future water supply.” Also in the report is The Community Partnerships Program and the administration of the Queensland Government’s Regional Arts Development

New plans for English Street THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is seeking the community’s input into the refurbishment of English Street in Malanda. English Street is scheduled to be resurfaced as part of this financial year’s road renewal program. Councillor Dave Bilney said this provides the TRC with the opportunity to look at how they can make improvements to pedestrian safety and parking, and work towards the community’s aspirations identified in

the Malanda Master Plan. “This project will benefit the community now and into the future,” Cr Bilney said “We have prepared two designs that acknowledge the community’s suggestions and we’re keen to see which is the most popular. It is important for the community to provide their input and perspective to ensure we get it right.” You can have your say on the designs by heading to

www.shapingourtablelands.trc. qld.gov.au or emailing communityengagement@ trc.qld.gov.au before 19 November, or at one of the drop-in sessions. Drop-in sessions are in the Malanda Chamber of Commerce room, next to the library from 9am to 2.30pm on Friday, October 30, 9am to 1pm on Saturday, October 31 or 2pm to 7pm on Monday, November 9.

Fund which has seen Council contribute over $180,000 to support not-for-profit groups, festivals, events, sporting initiatives and cultural developments. Mayor Angela Toppin acknowledged the efforts of former Mayor Tom Gilmore O.A.M., Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen, and Councillor Nipper Brown who all served on the Mareeba Shire Council from 2014-2020. “I thank them for their service to the Council and the Mareeba Shire community,” Cr Toppin said. “I am looking forward to the next four years serving as Mayor, and I have great confidence in the prosperity of the Shire”.

Tourism industry calls Constituents invited to for safe and accessible meet candidates for Hill roads to aid in recovery THE Queensland Tourism Industry is calling for investment and commitment for safe and accessible roads throughout inland Queensland to aid in the industry’s recovery. Tourism has been impacted significantly by COVID and Queensland Tourism Industry Council, Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said, “Regional communities, particularly the tourism industry within these communities, rely on roads to make the communities safely accessible by tourists,” he said. “With the tourism sector being essential to the post-COVID recovery, now is the time to invest in our inland roads. Investing in inland Queensland roads will assist the tourism sector to remain an important part of our regional communities throughout Queensland and aid the recovery of Queensland.” In 2019 the tourism industry in Queensland contributed $28.3 billion to Queensland’s Gross State Product (GSP), representing 7.7% of total GSP and generated $7.9 billion in exports in the year ending June 2019, making it one of the state’s largest industries. Outback Queensland Tourism Association (OQTA) CEO, Denise Brown added, “Drive tourism is synonymous with Outback Queensland, and with health and safety top of mind, investment into Inland Queensland Roads is essential to ensure

Outback Queensland does not miss out on the tourism expenditure available and our regional communities can continue to grow and recover from the impacts of COVID.” Ms Brown said that “Tourism contributes an estimated $443.7 million to the Outback Queensland region and supports 4,600 jobs, showing exactly how critical the tourism industry is in these regional communities and therefore the quality of inland roads is critical to the region’s economy.” Deputy Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Kevin Davies said there are several roads vital to self-drive tourism in Far North Queensland that the MSC was pushing for. “We are really pushing for The Burke Development Road (BDR) and Ootann Road to be sealed,” he said. “Not just for the sake of tourism but freight as well.” Mr Davies admits that the MSC has funds to do about 2.5 kilometres of the BDR, which means they would still have about another 11 kilometres still to go. “There’s another nine million dollars ear marked for the rest of the road that we are still waiting on,” he said. “We are also still pushing for funds for Ootann Road, we need about $200 million and we are pushing for 80 per cent of the funds from the Federal Govern-

ment and the rest from the State Government.” Mr Davies said inland roads would be used by many more tourists if they were adequate enough. “We could have more people inland than on the coast if we had roads that were up to scratch,” he said. “Ootann Road at the moment is pretty bad, nobody in a sedan or wicked van would be able to travel on it.”

WITH the state election only weeks away, The Express Newspaper in conjunction with the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) is running a ‘Meet the Candidates for the seat of Hill’ event tonight (Wednesday, October 21) at the Atherton Hotel. The event will allow all candidates who are running for the Seat of Hill to get up in front of their constituents and make the case for why they should be the Member for Hill. The event will be hosted by The Express Newspapers Editor Mr Carl Portella who said it was important for the newspaper to become involved. “As a news medium that covers a large area of Far North Queensland we thought it was important for the residents on the electoral roll in the seat of Hill be given the opportunity to see who was running for their state seat,” he said “The ‘Meet the Candidates’ event is also an opportunity to ask each candidate questions on the more important issues affecting the electorate and what will be done if they are elected.” Christine Doan from the ATCC said “Although our political choices are fairly stable in Hill, it is so important for all of us to familiarise

ourselves with all the candidates,” she said. “Both personality and policies stand out in the Meet the Candidate events, informed voters make good citizens. “The ATCC is stoked to be partnering with The Express Newspaper to create yet another Meet the Candidates forum.” Ms Doan also said that it was great that Australian voters could still engage in town hall style question and answer meetings. “As we turn our stunned gazes northeast to the USA’s crazy election season, it’s time for all of us to take a different path,” she said. “I love the Meet the Candidate evenings because it’s

a great way to catch up with each other, inform ourselves about the range of personalities and policies on offer, and make best possible personal choices for voting day.” Each candidate will have five minutes to do their introductory speech, and then there will be a break. Candidates will then have one minute each to respond to question from the gallery that residents will be asked to write down upon arrival. Food and drink will be available, there will be limited seating and social distancing rules will apply. The Atherton Hotel is located at 90 Main Street. Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.

A stakeholder meeting was held last fortnight, October 9 to discuss the best course of action to fight Amazon Frogbit and protect far northern waterways.

Fight on to fight Frogbit

IN order to preserve more than 750 kilometres of the Mitchell River, a stakeholder committee has been formed and will lead the fight against the Amazon Frogbit. Organisations such as Muluridji Tribal Aboriginal Corp. RNTBC have been fighting a losing battle against the invasive weed since it was found in the Atherton and Granite creek. Amazon Frogbit is used recreationally in aquariums and fish ponds but when released into open waterways it quickly spreads and smothers the waterways destroying the local ecosystem like a virus. Although the weed is still legally sold in Queensland, Mareeba Shire Council has added it to their Biosecurity Plan which will help future spread and containment of the weed. Mareeba Shire Council Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies wants council to do everything it can to contain and prevent the spreading of Amazonian Frogbit. “We have to keep advocating to the state to get it declared as a weed and get some money to contain it,” he said.

“We will keep advocating and supporting anyone fighting the spread of this weed to get rid of it as soon as possible. “I just hope people know what this weed does, they just have to go down to Atherton Creek to see it.” The weed has now found its way down to the Granite Bridge in Mareeba and fears are that should it spread to the Mitchell River, over 750km of diverse ecosystem could be destroyed.

with Muluridji Tribal Aboriginal Corp, said the dangers this weed possess to the waterways in Far North Queensland and how the weed will be fought going forward. “As we discussed today these weed problems take a long time to go away and they require long term sustained effort and funding,” he said. “Ultimately our plan is to set up a permanent Indigenous weed management team in the upper catchments of the Barron and Mitchell Rivers to fight this weed. “At the moment the weed is freely available and until it gets listed as a regulatory weed you will never get control over it.” A proposal and brief strategy was drawn up from the findings of the meeting and will be used to apply for both short term funding to contain the weed and stop it spreading coupled with long term funding for a more permanent solution. A network will be set up to better inform the public of the weed and it’s dangers and the meeting stakeholders are all lobbying to get Amazon Frogbit listed as a regulatory weed.

“At the moment the weed is freely available and until it gets listed as a regulatory weed you will never get control over it.” A meeting was held on Friday, October 9 and saw organisations like Sunwater, Queensland Parks and Wildlife, Mareeba Shire Council, Muluridji Aboriginal Corporation and others all attend to discuss the best course of action to fight the weed. Crazy ant eradication “on track” in Kuranda THE eradication of yellow crazy ants in the Kuranda area has continued and the Wet Tropics Management Authority is confident of ridding the Wet Tropics of this invasive pest. The Australian Government has agreed to supply a further $3 million towards the Yellow Crazy Ant Eradication Program for this financial year. This funding is matched by the Queensland Government under a joint commitment of $18 million over three years fin-

ishing in June 2022. Wet Tropics Management Authority Chair Leslie Shirreffs said that the eradication program continues to produce excellent results. “The eradication of yellow crazy ants remains on track but we must stay vigilant,” he said. “Thanks to improved surveying techniques and a vigilant community four new infestations have been discovered and are now undergoing treatment. “It is high priority to find any

new infestations as soon as possible, the Authority’s field teams continue to survey suburban and rural fringes between Cairns and Babinda and in the Kuranda Area.” To keep the community informed and up to date the Authority has produced an Annual Report card, a new brochure and a yellow crazy ant ID card to be distributed to stakeholders, residents within treatment areas and the general public.

Students awarded for excellence MAREEBA State High School celebrated the amazing work its students did during the troublesome times of COVID-19 with them hosting their in house awards night last Thursday. Usually held at the international club and attended by students’ parents and carers, this year’s event was forced to be changed by COVID restrictions. The event was therefore held in the school hall during school hours and saw students being acknowledged for their great work during the 2020 schooling year. The standout student for the night was Gamuchirai (Gamu) Makoti with her winning the Tom Braes Outstanding Community Service Award, The Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award for year 12, the Amaroo Medical Public Speaking Award and the Caltex All-Rounder award. Gamu wasn’t the only student who shone through with Daniel Penn taking away the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award for year 10 and the Robert Fabris Trust for his passion and excellence in science subjects and being the year 10 Dux. Nikita Nastasi and Vojko Ivicevic were both the recipients of a new award, the Australian Defence Force STEM award. Lea Micelli and Dailin Joshua joined Daniel Penn with them taking away the year 11 Dux awards, due to the new ATAR system the year 12 Dux was unable to be announced.

ON Wednesday October 14, students, teachers and parents from the Tolga State School celebrated the schools 125th birthday. Principal Kayleen Wright said that it was only a mini celebration but students were still rewarded with cupcakes and presents. “Due to COVID restrictions it was mini celebration for our 125th birthday,” she said. “Our big celebrations have now been delayed until May of next year, but this year the students received cake, 125th celebratory birthday yo-yos and we also ran a fundraiser for the Cancer Council. “We also got the kids to stand in the shape of 125 for a photo, as you can imagine getting 335 kids and 40 staff in the shape of a 125 for a photo was interesting, but overall it was a fantastic day.”

THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN

Dignity Kits to help locals in need THE International Soroptimists of the Tropical Tablelands recently compiled and donated 12 Dignity Kits to the Atherton and Mareeba Hospitals. The Dignity Kits are comprised of items that women subjected to physical or sexual abuse or assault will have the opportunity to access when discharged from hospital. The kits contain items like a towel, face wash, underwear, a T-shirt dress, a comb, soap and a pair of thongs. International Soroptimists of the Tropical Tablelands President Mary Lyle feels a sense of pride when supplying kits as

when victims come in they are stripped of their possessions and clothing and are often left in a hospital gown. “To get forensic evidence everything is taken from them, therefore they are left with a hospital gown which after what they’ve just been through is not very dignified,” she said. “The whole idea was to provide these people with some essentials like clothing and toiletries. “Just knowing that these kits could be used by your neighbour or people in the community, that’s the good part about it.”

MAREEBA Meals on Wheels has received a much needed $1000 donation that will go towards the purchasing of new kitchen equipment. Member for Cook Cynthia Lui made the visit to Mareeba on Wednesday and presented the cheque to Mareeba Meals on Wheels President Patricia Goldfinch. Mrs Goldfinch said that the money will be used to purchase a new 30-litre pressure cooker. “Our service relies heavily on volunteers in the kitchen, delivery and governance of the organisation,” she said. “Every dollar counts to continue our Meals on Wheels service.”

Ms Lui said Meals on Wheels prepared and delivered nutritious meals to older residents, people with disabilities or people recovering from illness or hospitalisation. “This will help the kitchen volunteers to increase the number of meals they cook to meet increased demand they have experienced over the past four months,” Ms Lui said. “This valuable service keeps the community connected – Meals on Wheels volunteers keep clients engaged socially. “I congratulate Meals on Wheels and it’s volunteers on their dedication and practical service to the community.”

School arts showcase

STUDENTS at St Stephen’s Catholic College (SSCC) were given the chance to present some of their hard work throughout the year to their parents and others with their recent art exhibition. The art exhibition was held last Friday, October 16 and was an event that the students had been preparing for all year. Not only were students showcasing their art work with paintings, drawings and sculptors but there were also music and drama performances. SSCC Teacher Emma Led-

lin was impressed with the work that the students had accomplished over the year and was proud to see them present it to the community. “This art exhibition is a culmination of what we and the students have been able to achieve this year,” she said. “The kids work so hard so it is lovely for them to be able to show that. “Quite a bit of the art on show was done during isolation.”

BOM releases severe QLD weather outlook THE Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has released its Severe Weather Outlook for October to April, showing an increased risk of flooding for eastern Australia and tropical cyclones in the north, with roughly average potential for heatwaves and severe thunderstorms. The current La Niña is likely to bring more rain to eastern and northern Australia, with some drought affected areas already seeing rainfall deficiencies ease and water storage levels increase. BOM data also suggests an earlier than normal arrival for the first rains of this year's northern wet season and an earlier monsoon onset for Darwin. While recent decades have seen a decline in the number of tropical cyclones in our region, Bureau climatologist, Greg Browning, says this summer is likely to buck that trend. “On average Australia sees 9 to 11 tropical cyclones each year, with 4 crossing the coast. With La Niña this year we are

expecting to see slightly more tropical cyclones than average, and the first one may arrive earlier than normal,” Mr Browning said. “Every northern wet season has had at least one tropical cyclone cross the Australian coast, so we can never be complacent. “We know that cyclones can develop at any time throughout the tropical cyclone season, which runs from November to April.” The Bureau has also released it’s fire outlook for the next six months. Mt Browning said after the catastrophic fires of last summer, it’s a very different bushfire outlook this season, with average fire potential for most parts. “This fire season we’re expecting wetter than average conditions in eastern and northern Australia, so long running large bushfires are less likely, however a wetter spring can lead to abundant grass growth, which could increase fire danger as it naturally dries during summer.”

Torimba Festival wraps up for 2020 ON Saturday, October 17, two different events officially ended the 2020 Torimba Festival in Ravenshoe. The annual Festival of the Forest and the Ravenshoe Metrogaine concluded the festival after most of the events for this year were cancelled due to COVID. The Metrogaine was an urban treasure hunt around the Ravenshoe CBD and the Festival of the Forest had more than 4000 visitors over the past two weeks. Team Czatracki was the winning team of the Metogaine event. Event Coordinator for the Ravenshoe Chamber of Commerce, Doreen Mortimore, said that even though numbers were down, the Torimba festival would be back again in 2021. “We had less numbers this year due to COVID, but we hope to return with a full line up of the festival next year,” she said. “We will also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Festival of the Forest next year.” Ravenshoe has been celebrating the “Torimba Festival” since 1969. The community event, held in October each year, is a celebration of tourism and timber.

The earliest recorded sightings of The Queensland Tiger go back to 1871. Anecdotes began to accumulate in written letters sent to the Zoological Society of London In 1925 The Townsville Bulletin published a report from a prospector who lived around the peninsula for 50 years, claiming that a cat type creature was captured at Scrubby creek near Herberton and another was spotted near Tully. The report also claimed that Indigenous Australians referred to a marsupial cat as “yarry”. In 1932 the Courier Mail reported a story about an exhibition to climb Mount Bellenden Ker. According to the report a Mr Arnold Leamann a northern guide and bushman reported that he had seen one. It was about the size of a dingo but with a short flat head, rather like a tiger. The body

was tall and striped like a tiger. It was perched on a branch of a tree and snarled and spat at him. In 2017 the ABC reported that former tourism operator Brian Hobbshad had an unlikely encounter with a family of the animals in 1983. Mr Hobbs said he was camping with a friend when, in the middle of the night, something startled his German Shepherd. “I hopped out of bed and put her (the dog) on a short leash, grabbed a spotlight and started to look around the camp towards the ravine area where I'd been walking the dog previously,” he said. “All of a sudden I had these sets of red eyes looking at me and there was a male, a female and two pups — I got within 20 metres of them.” He said the animals made next to no noise as he approached and seemed curious about him and his camp. “These animals, I've never seen anything like them before in my life,” he said. “They were dog-shaped – I

had a shepherd with me so I certainly know what dogs are about – and in the spotlight I could see they were tan in colour and they had stripes on their sides.” According to Mr Hobbs the family of animals paid his camp another visit before the night was out and again made no signs of aggression. Jane Leadley has lived near Lake Barrine since the late 1960’s and said that she had an encounter with a strange creature in the early 1970’s. “I was driving between the Mount Hypipamee Crater Road and Longlands Gap Road near Upper Barron heading south,” she said. “It was late afternoon, the light was good and I saw this creature just about to walk into the long grass, but it stopped and looked at my car driving past. “It had a long tail that was curved up at the end with stripes and it had a flat head. Jane said it was about the size of a dog, but nothing like a

dingo and too big for a cat “At the time I remember saying what the ---- is that,” she said. “The reason I remember it so well is because it had a flat

head and different shaped ears.” “It sort or looked like a Tasmanian tiger, but only because it had stripes.” Jane said at the time she I stopped telling people because

they didn’t believe her. “I know it happened and seeing all the comments on-line recently and that we all describe a similar thing, it’s just too much of a coincidence.”

Creativity on stage THESPIANS from across Far North Queensland will be on stage when the ‘One Act Play Festival’ opens on Friday, October 30 in Atherton. This year’s theme is “Theatre through Time” and is an opportunity for local actors to share their creativity with the community. In contrast to the first festival held in Atherton way back in 1959 where 1,000 people were reported to have descended on Merriland Hall, this will be a intimate occasion at the Atherton Performing Arts Theatre with Covid social distancing rules being applied. There will be ten plays performed in all from Atherton Performing Arts in Atherton, Mount St Bernard College in Herberton, Tropical Arts in Cairns, as well as presenters from Townsville. Five one act plays that will be presented on Friday are: • The Fantasists (Mount St Bernard, Herberton – staff and students) • Chubby Bunny (Mount St Bernard – students) • Cupboard Love (Atherton Performing Arts – senior) • Ninja in Blue Jeans (Mount St Bernard – students) • The House (Atherton Performing Arts – junior) Following on from Friday night, Saturday afternoon October 31, will feature four plays being presented: • Oh No Romeo (Atherton Performing Arts

– junior) • The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet (Atherton Performing Arts – junior) • Shakespeare’s Sonnets and Verse (Tropical Arts, Cairns – senior) • A Merry Regiment of Women (Atherton Performing Arts – senior). The special feature of “Dramarama: the Theatre Time Machine” by presenters and facilitators Fleming and Pulman from Townsville, will be performed on Saturday evening at 7.30pm. Jacqui Stephens, President the Atherton Performing Arts, said the weekend is all about Thespians from the north sharing their creativity among themselves and the community. “There will also be workshops held for budding thespians workshops include a student Shakespearean journey at Mount St Bernard College on Friday, October 30 and on Sunday November 1 there will be a special workshop on Theatre, Clowning and Shakespeare at the APA Theatre in Atherton,” she said. “On the following Sunday, November 8 at 2pm there will be a selection of the festival’s plays performed from the previous weekend.” The event has been made possible by a RADF Grant from TRC and the Queensland Government. Tickets can be purchased from Tableland Books in Atherton and online at athertonperformingarts.com.au

ENTERTAINMENT Celebrating 90 years 1930 was a special year. As arguably the greatest thoroughbred to ever grace Australian shores Phar Lap won its maiden Melbourne Cup, there was history of its own being created more than 2500 kilometres away. On November 4, 1930, the famous Atherton pub that is the Barron Valley Hotel opened its doors for the first time under the stewardship of new owner Scondor Nasser. With an unparalleled vision and a desire to provide the region with a pub experience like no other, Scondor took a once popular hotel and made it into something more. After making art deco style renovations and helping provide a sense of community that still exists today, Scondor's contribution to the Atherton identity cannot be overstated. Additionally, the Barron Valley's exceptional reputation is also a testament to Scondor's successors. His son Harold and his wife Pat, along with Harold’s sisters Del and Joyce, further added to the BV legacy during their tenure running

the pub from 1946 until their retirement in 1990. It was then time for Scondor’s grandson Michael and his wife Maree to take the publican reins, a responsibility they have excelled at. Michael and Maree’s enthusiasm and incredible energy immediately transformed the hotel into the “go to” destination on the Tablelands. They have also carried on the torch as it relates to their community minded approach, with the BV being home to both the local racing and rugby league fraternities for the past 90 years. Not only have they ensured that Barron Valley has remained the pub of choice on the Atherton Tablelands, they have contributed to the local economy in ways that should be commended. Their foresight in bringing international workers to the Tablelands by providing them accommodation and a job has been instrumental for the prosperity of the region. Today the Barron Valley is a home away from home for many backpackers who are vital farm workers for the

booming agricultural sector. Employment, lodging and meals are all supplied by the extended Nasser clan, and invaluable family support is provided to young visitors whose families are spread mostly across Europe and the UK. While there are many reasons to visit the Barron Valley Hotel on any given day, a particular date that should be circled on everyone’s calendar is Melbourne Cup Day. The BV has rightfully garnered a reputation for hosting one of the best events in Far North Queensland on the first Tuesday of November, and this year is set to be all the more special as it signals the 90th anniversary since the establishment began under the Nassers. With a brand-new chef and an appetising menu to match, be sure to head down to the Barron Valley this Melbourne Cup Day (Tuesday, November 3) and celebrate 90 years of one of the best pubs in the country. Visit the Barron Valley Hotel Facebook page for more information.

CONSIDERATION for the environment has become a first thought for society. Established 26 years ago, Payless Timbers in Tolga has been playing its part in reducing impacts on the environment through sustainable practices for the production and supply of timber products. Environmental factors are impacting people’s decisions when it comes to building and it’s becoming increasingly popular to revert to the “green way” and use timber. Today, timber used for buildings is sourced from sustainable plantations and severe penalties exist to help combat rogue traders and individuals who attempt to plunder natural forests for

timber. Australian wholesalers are required to show proof that all timber imports are coming from sustainable regions. Payless Timbers only deals with certified timber wholesalers and insists on the supply of timber from sustainable plantations. If termites are a concern for you, don’t worry, treated timber is still available and a full range can be found at Payless Timbers. Timber has long been regarded for its timeless beauty and elegance, and now you can have the strength of timber in your home and feel secure in the knowledge that you are helping to reduce the carbon footprint humanity is leaving on our environment.

Whether you are building a new house or renovating your current home, Payless Timbers can help with a selection of timber panelling, flooring, cladding and cabinet doors, as well as a large selection of framing in pine and hardwood. A wide range of solid timber doors, overlay floors, kitchen cabinet doors and several decking varieties is also available. If you require something specific, simply ask the friendly Payless Timbers staff and they will be more than happy to accommodate you. For more information, drop into Payless Timbers at Tolga or phone the team on 4095 4770.

Blueberry season comes to an end

BLUEBERRIES will soon be off the menu as the season comes to an end. Atherton Blueberry farmer Martin Inderbitzin’s grandparents started farming dairy when they arrived on the Tablelands in the 1970’s before moving into macadamias, avocadoes, blueberries and custard apples This year has had its challenges but Mr Inderbitzin said he was still feeling optimistic. “Every year we get a little bit better, we have only been growing blueberries for six years and as our crop knowledge improves every year, the crop gets better,” he said. “This year we will have sent a bit over 200 tonnes to market. “Prices haven’t changed

land. After a bittersweet start to the year with farmers batting drought and heavy rain irrigation experts are teaming up with locals to help produce bigger yields. University of Southern Queensland project lead Michael Scobie is encouraging anyone in the sugar industry looking to refine their skills to get involved. He’s working with a range of experts to develop the skills and capacity of local extension and service providers which will ultimately help farmers produce more cane. “As crushing season nears its end, now is the perfect time for people to upskill,” Mr Scobie said. “From consultants to extension officers, individuals work one-on-one with our researchers to develop their skills. “Whether it’s assessing pumps and irrigation systems, developing new technologies or implementing better strategies to reduce water loss, it’ll mean delivering bigger profits for sugarcane growers.”

much, they always start high at the beginning of the season, whereas now they are as low as they will go, it’s pretty marginal at this stage.” Mr Inderbitzin said they started picking in late February and early March just as COVID hit. “For the past 6 weeks finding people has been a challenge but we were very happy to have more locals on the farm this year,” he said. “Anyone who applied we gave them a job; if you dropped by and said you’re looking for a job I gave them a go.” Now that blueberries are coming to an end Mr Inderbitzin said looking forward they will probably have to use more pa-

cific islanders for picking next year. “We have a great team of locals already working here, but this year we had more workers from Vanuatu and only a few backpackers,” he said. “We are about to start pruning trees in the hope of harvesting around March. “I think next year staffing could be a problem so we are keen for any locals to come and have a chat if they are looking for work.” As for a La Nina being declared Mr Martin said its actually good news. “Anything that puts water into a dam and aquifers is a good thing, we don’t need the Cyclones but we will take the rain.”

University of Southern Queensland project lead Michael Scobie is encouraging anyone in the sugar industry looking to refine their skills to get involved.

Mr Scobie said that improving irrigation and water management on the farm, is one key approach to making sure that the industry remains vibrant and viable. “The sugar industry is facing

some difficult problems at the moment,” he said. “Challenging weather conditions coupled with low sugar prices across the world has the potential to reduce productivity and profitability.”

There are around 3,000 canegrowers in Queensland with the industry estimated to be worth more than $2 billion dollars. To find out more go to www. crdc.com.au/smarter-irrigationphase-2

Twenty-eight local governments are partners in the Inland Queensland Roads Action Project (IQ-RAP), advocating for more investment into road and bridge upgrades to create jobs and improve safety and productivity for all users across the inland Queensland road network. Much strategic planning work and advocacy has been done in recent years. At the upcoming state election, it is important for all voters to remember the connectivity between the importance of roads and the health of our regional economies. Our 28 local government areas contribute $43.5 billion to the state economy each year. This is nearly as much as the economy of Tasmania and the NT combined. We are critical to the success of the mining, cattle and agricultural industries that are also key export revenue earners. Drive tourism is also vital for our rural towns and communities. Each of these industries relies on the road network, its safety and efficiency. We need all Parties to consider the future economic health of not only SEQ but also Far North and inland Queensland. Investment

into the road network will drive safety and productivity outcomes to sustain and support the growth of our industries as well as immediately create jobs through the planning and construction stages. We need a fair go. When you next meet a candidate, ask them about their commitment to inland Queensland and the vital road network that supports our communities and the state. Deputy Mayor Cr Kevin Davies Member of the IQ-RAP Working Group Mareeba Shire Council

Alternative dam for water security? IN The Express of the 7/10/20, there was an article about diverting water from the Johnstone River into Tinaroo Dam. My farm over a period of 50 years, has a frontage to the Johnstone River and I have observed the river in all it’s various moods. I would say that you would only be able to divert the water over a period of eight weeks, and that would make it uneconomical. One of the problems I see is the fact that the Barron and the Johnstone flood at the same time and would be a problem as you don’t want the Johnstone water to

end up in the Pacific Ocean. I am not against development and the Nullinga Dam should be built as it has been studied to death. I believe an alternative would be to build a medium sized dam further down the Johnstone valley somewhere near the junction of the Beatrice River into the Johnstone. A small hydro plant should be incorporated into it and should be used to pump the water into Tinaroo in the dry season when it is needed. There is no doubt if this Dam was built it would lead to the expansion of the Irrigation area in the Mareeba area, it could be utilised to produce more hydro power, and could keep Tinaroo almost full to keep our tourists and locals happy, and with a weir built at the bottom of the Kuranda Falls could help Cairns in water for many years into the future. Left or right? WHEN it comes to elections, there’s always one fact that bothers me, whether it’s a Federal or State election. No matter how you look at it we’re stuck with either Labor or Liberal. Two choices are fine if you’re on a plane (chicken or fish) or an elevator (up or down) but it can be increasingly frustrating when you have subtle nuances such as jobs, environment, the economy, health, welfare and crime. The 43rd parliament (2010) was the first hung parliament in Australia since 1940. We were told by the Abbott opposition that it was an illegitimate and ineffective government. While the minority government under Gillard was eventually brought undone, it was actually a productive parliament. The NBN, NDIS, Carbon price, Gonski and many other reforms were legislated and implemented thanks to the input of the cross benchers. It’s amazing what a government can get done when

they have a bunch of independents or minor parties watching their every move. Some people say the system is too entrenched to change, but take a look at Cathy McGowan who took on a shadow cabinet minister in a safe seat of Indi and won in 2013. Tony Windsor did it in New England and Rob Oakeshott did it in Lyne. Independent Zali Steggall took on an exprime minister and won the seat of Warringah in 2019. All of them proved to be exactly what a local member should be, engaged with their constituents, active on the issues that mattered to their local area, and dedicated to the good of the country. What if every rural seat in the country sent someone to parliament who was prepared to actually fight for the things that mattered to their rural community? What about if elected MPs who were strongly invested in rural medical facilities, mental health services, protecting farming lands, fight-

ing climate change, assisting Aboriginal communities, domestic violence services, national internet reach, infrastructure and education? Imagine voting for someone who didn’t have party allegiances and had to stand on issues not preferences? If there were enough of them making enough noise, getting enough support, talking loudly enough to remind people that there are more than two options on a ballot paper? What if, at the very least, all those independent candidates achieved was to remind the major parties that they need to think about something other than their own pensions and longevity? What if enough independents appeared in the next election to represent an electorate that is utterly disgusted by the behaviour inside the Canberra bubble? The two-party system has failed us, but there is an alternative, if we choose to use it.

We thank the people, farmers and businesses of the Tablelands for their support and our friends for their friendship over those years. Looking back there are many memorable times in Rotary, Masonic Lodge, Malanda Scouts and recently TREAT for Gordon and for me the P&Cs of Malanda State Schools, Eacham Shire Council, Soroptimists International Tropical Tablelands and my Wednesday Sewing group just to name a few. The highlight for me as Mayor of Eacham Shire was the building of Oz Care a lasting legacy for the Tablelands. We will return for visits as our daughter and her family are here but now it is time for new friendships and ventures. The Tablelands will remain in our hearts as a beautiful place with so many wonderful people. Thank you once again. Mary and Gordon Lyle MALANDA

Great news for Walkamin streets I NOTED in this week’s Express (October 7) that TRC had allocated funding in the 20/21 Projects and Programmes budget to seal unsealed streets in Walkamin township. I did a happy dance.

have your say. .

EMAIL: editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au

As a resident of Walkamin for some 20 years we have been trying to get the unsealed streets in ‘town’ addressed, in order to reduce the dust problem which blights residents. Back when Chris Adams was our Division Representative and following submissions to Council to address the issue, we were told that money had been allocated for the Walkamin works, but was subsequently taken and spent elsewhere. As the longest unsealed street (Casuarina) in town runs along the eastern perimeter of town and our prevailing wind is a south easterly, every time a vehicle goes down the street residents are enveloped in clouds of dust. I take my hat off to the incumbent TRC Council as, while taking no time to ‘tighten their belts’, they are also seeing their way clear to address the concerns of rate payers. Here’s hoping the budget allocation stays there for us. Lindsey Cullington WALKAMIN

CLUB NEWS Sausages are sizzling at the Mareeba Coles car park, every second Saturday from 7am. Approval has been given to the Mareeba Lions Club to hold a sausage sizzle in the car park every second weekend. The first event raised $500.00 which has been donated to the Lions Medical Research Foundation. Since it began in 1963, Lions Medical Research Foundation has supported internationally recognized medical research across diverse fields by funding early career biomedical scientists. The Foundation, with support from its constituent members – Lions Clubs of Queensland and Northern New South Wales – supports our researchers to make medical discoveries that benefit all Australians. Cricket in Mareeba has benefited from donations as well with new seating installed at Borzi Park and Firth Park. Lions Denis McKinley and Terry Wallace saw this project through to completion. Although affected by COVID the Lions Christmas Raffle is on again with tickets available through all Lions and the usual selling points at Coles, IGA and

zens puts to shame the banal outpouring of Government, both State and Federal. Bureaucrats sitting at their desks producing algorithms from their computers telling us how to live our lives and run our businesses. How to farm the land, how to conserve water, how to tackle bush fires. A bureaucracy that ignores the wellbeing of our elderly... a generation who fought for the democracy we enjoy today. A bureaucracy that has spawned a generation of students have lost out on being able to spell correctly and effectively use grammar, and thereby unable to integrate into the commercial world for our future. A bureaucracy that never thinks of addressing the future for the good of the people and lamenting what could have been done. It is a sad truth that in this ‘war’ against COVID-19, we are not all in it together. From the Prime Minister, through Government Ministers and including the thousands of public servants, there is a deafening silence with regard to reducing their salaries or benefits, whilst the tsunami of job losses continues for everyone else, together with the carnage of businesses closing down. Priceline. Our ticket sellers may not be there every day but keep an eye out for them. The raffle is a great source of funds to the Club enabling it to support humanitarian projects locally, nationally, and internationally. Christmas cakes are also now available from where you purchase your raffle tickets. Sporting and other Clubs wishing to raise funds though selling the Lions Christmas Raffle tickets can do so easily by emailing the club at lionsmba@gmail.com This is a great way for other clubs to raise funds without having to organise a raffle themselves. Mareeba Lions also supports the Australian Lions Hearing Dogs (ALHD) which for more than 40 years, have provided the much needed funds to run our Hearing Assistance Dog program. This help from Lions Clubs enables the procurement, training and delivery of Hearing Assistance Dogs to people suffering from severe to profound hearing loss all around Australia. More and more lives are being enhanced by these clever dogs and the friendliness provided by local Lions Club volunteers

through the delivery process and beyond. With 1 in 6 Australians suffering from hearing loss, this is an enormous problem on a national scale, and something of great concern to both Lions Clubs and Specsavers Audiology. Specsavers Audiology, with over 165 stores across the country, has seen the community service that ALHD provides; and with an aligned purpose, has stepped up to become a major sponsor of ALHD’s Training Centre expansion project. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. Fellowship, Good times, meeting people, building lasting friendships, service to the community, learning new skills, Leadership and personal development these are some of the reasons we are the Lions. Lions meet in Mareeba at the Mareeba Leagues Club at 6.30 pm on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Check us out on Facebook or on the web at www. mareeba.qld.lions.org.au

Sisters showjumping success TWO Showjumping sisters have returned from a dominating run in Southern Queensland returning with five championships shared between them. Olivia and Jamie Hewitt-Toms are Speewah locals who have been riding since they were two and three years old respectively and have competed in many competitions right across Australia. Recently they both competed in the 2020 PCQ State Showjumping and Equitation Competition at Beaudesert representing Far North QLD Pony Clubs and the Pryde’s EasiFeed Interschool State Championships in Toowoomba. The sisters completely blew the competition out of the water with Jamie placing as the highest Showjumper at the State Interschool Competition and Olivia being the highest placed Showjumper at the PCQ State competition. Jamie was excited to have done so well but also said that the competition was still fierce. “It was great this was our first big competition for the year so it was good to get back out and get such good results,” she said. “The competition was really good it was top notch. “The competition was harder than it had been in previous years because they opened up the qualifications so more people could come.” Jamie dominated her competition being the 100 and 110cm Overall Champion and the 90 and 120cm Reserve Champion. Her sister won the 90cm intermediate becoming the Overall Champion and came 3rd overall in the 100cm intermediate. Next up for the duo are the regular local competitions before they finish out for the year and prepare for 2021’s championships.

TABLELAND members of Rhee Taekwondo were able to get together for the first time since the shadow of COVID was cast over Australia with many students able to complete their grading. Rhee Taekwondo centres were closed across the country earlier in the year and thousands of members were denied access to their regular training sessions. When restrictions eased, training was able to begin again and halls filled up with mem-

bers working to develop their skills under the new Covid-Safe regulations and striving for their next belt. The recent term 3 grading was held in Mareeba and saw students from both the Mareeba and Ravenshoe schools joining. 6th Dan Regional Master Instructor Gennaro Arena and 4ht Dan Regional Instructor Jacob Gigliotti were very impressed by the student’s performances and many were successful in receiving their next belts.

Action on track at last meet for 2020 A TOTAL of 23 driver’s raced at Sunday’s Herberton Tepon Speedway meeting in three grades which was the Tableland Competition Car Club’s last motor racing meeting for 2020. Jockey recovering after horrific horse accident

ON FIRE: Atherton’s double century maker Paul Nasser.

Jackson Revell immediately after being kicked in the face by a race horse in Tolga

A TOLGA based stable hand who got kicked in the head last week by a racehorse says he can’t wait to get back to work. Jackson Revell was walking ‘Roll the Beans’ back to the Roy Chillemi stables, when it reared and kicked him in the face near the Kennedy Highway, Tolga on Saturday October 3 At the time paramedics were called and Mr Revell was rushed to Atherton Hospital in a critical condition, he was later transferred to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition for further treatment. He had several fractures in his jaw, both eyes sockets shattered, and his upper gum was shattered and he now has artificial bone in his upper gum as well as the loss of some teeth. Even though Mr Revel is now out of hospital he said he wants to get back to work ASAP. “I’m still not feeling a 100% and I need a couple more surgeries.” he said “Soon I will have my jaw wired shut, so there will be no talking from me for 2 weeks. “Then after two weeks they release the wires a little and then two weeks after that I will have elastic bands and braces.”

Mr Revel said he was walking ‘Roll the Beans” back to the stable when the horse spooked, reared up and kicked out. After the kick Mr Revel said he couldn’t talk and couldn’t scream’ but remained conscious throughout the whole ordeal. “Even though I’m still recovering, I’m ready to come back to work.” he said. It’s something that his trainer Roy Chillemi said he can’t say yes too. “He hasn’t been signed off by a doctor yet, so I can’t take him back, he needs to rest and recuperate.” The 22 year old who is originally from Tasmania moved to Far North Queensland to follow his passion for horses and even though he is thankful that his injuries weren’t fatal, Jackson said that he has a few people to thank. “I want to say thanks to Aaron Lynch and his mum Kylie for sticking by me and taking care of me during all of this,’ he said. “I’m also very thankful to the team at the Stables for the support and everything that that the team have done for me since joining them.”

Atherton wins nail biting match ATHERTON’S Paul Nasser posted another century and backed up with the ball, taking out Man of the Match honours in a close Cricket Far North 40 over match against Rovers at Griffiths Park on Saturday. The grand final rematch went down to the wire with Atherton awarded a 1 run win despite some controversy in the finishing stages. Sent in

to bat by Rovers, Atherton's batsmen struggled to settle in. Paul Nasser shouldered the load, forming a 57 run partnership with Will Nasser and a 64 run partnership with Mason Blaney before being trapped in front for 104. Atherton's innings closed 9-215. Rover's got off to a great attacking start punishing Atherton's bowlers for any-

thing loose. Mick Salerno snared opener Bobby Brix and Pete Sceresini dismissed dangerman Josh Chadwick, before Paul Nasser and Hadyn Steele slowed the run rate to keep Atherton in the game. A couple of run-outs had the game in the balance with a run-a-ball required for the final 12 overs. The tight chase continued right down to 3 off

the final ball, the match was deemed over when Rovers completed one run. Next match is on October 30 – Atherton v Barron at Loder Park. RESULT: Atherton 9-215 (P Nasser 104, W Nasser 24, M Blaney 20) Def. Rovers 4-214 (P Sceresini 1-22, M Salerno 1-51)

Mareeba bounces back Mareeba Cricket has bounced back after their shaky season start with second and third grade taking their first wins of the season over the weekend. Mareeba seconds travelled down to Innisfail to face Cassowary Coast on an uncharacteristic cool day in Innisfail. The home side won the toss and sent Mareeba into bat on a green deck which proved to cause trouble right through the day. The opening start by Brendan Falvo and Jett Prien was tough and runs were hard

to come by and with the consecutive fall after a run out and catch Mareeba’s top order was in disarray. Captain Brendan Payne steadied the ship coming in at four and putting up an unbeaten 36 off 76 not out bringing the side to a low 6/110 off the allotted 40 overs. The Mareeba bowlers went quickly to work with some excellent line and length bowling tying down the Cassowary Coast batters and forcing them to make mistakes and throw away

their wickets. Some excellent fielding and two run outs from Tyson Brown forced the home side into a corner and further away from a victory. Giving the final overs to spinners Jett Prien and Cian Cochran sealed the deal for Mareeba as a stumping coming from the gloves of Brendan Falvo finished the game and gave Mareeba the hard fought win. Thirds did not disappoint either on Saturday taking their first win at home against

Mulgrave Kerala. Mulgrave won the toss and decided to bat first which proved to be their undoing with the Mareeba bowling attack making quick work of them, all out for 90 after just 28 overs. Mareeba then set their sights on that low total and with the runs spread around the top and middle order Mareeba made the score with heaps of breathing room at 5/91 after just 18 overs.

Bulls primed for finals

The Mareeba Bulls second division side is through to the FNQ Football grand final.

THE Mareeba Bull’s men’s Premier Reserves and Second Division teams have booked a spot in the FNQ Football Grand Finals. The Second Division defeated Douglas United 2-1 at Port Douglas on Friday night. The Bulls were determined to leave behind the disappointment of missing out on the premiership on goal difference to the Dragons the previous week. Daniel Rossi and Angelo Tatti Jnr scored a goal apiece to ensure a shot at the trophy, Daniel

Ferraro scored for the Dragons but it wasn’t enough. The Mareeba Bulls Premier Reserves have also booked a spot in the FNQ Football Grand Final by defeating the Stratford Dolphins 5-0 in the major semifinal at Tiger Park. Four first half goals came from Steven Cater with the cherry on top coming from Robert Pendenza late in the second Half. The Bull’s Third Division bowed out of the competition at

the first hurdle by going down 6-1 to the Southside Comets. The Mareeba Colts team also had a torrid time in their knockout semi and went down fighting in their 3-1 loss to Leichhardt which puts an end to their season. On Sunday at Borzi Park the Mareeba Premier Youth had a convincing 5-2 win against Leichhardt and will now take on Edge Hill United for a shot at the final. The Premier Ladies managed

The Mareeba Bulls ladies side will play off this Saturday against Leichhardt for a grand final spot.

a 1-0 win over JCU in sweltering conditions; there were two very tired teams as they both struggled in the conditions with just one goal separating them. The Lady Bulls will take on Leichhardt for the chance to play in the final. The Men’s Premier team just did enough on Sunday to progress to the Major Semi this weekend. They took on Innisfail United and were one goal up within ten minutes and settled into the

match with Innisfail not threatening the Bulls defensively. While the Bulls had the majority of the possession they failed to put away good chances and allowed the Cutters back into the match. They eventually drew level and brought the match into extra time, but late in the second period of extra time Wayne Srhoj was brought down in the penalty area. The resulting spot kick was taken well by Milan Quintieri to

send the Bulls into the knockout semi against Leichhardt with a 2-1 win. The Mareeba United Football Club could have 5 teams playing in the grand finals if they can overcome their final hurdles. The men’s Premier Reserves and Second Division have already booked theirs it’s now up to the Youth, Ladies and Premiers to give the club five. All matches will be played this Saturday at Leichhardt from 12 noon.

FNQ Football weekend wrap FNQ Premiers Edge Hill United had their easiest match of their season at Tiger Park on Saturday night. The undefeated Tigers showed their class from the outset and within the first 20 minutes were 3-0 up against Leichhardt who had no answer to the Edge Hill’s brilliant combinations and superb movement off the ball. By the end of the first half the match was over, as the

Tigers went into the break 7 goals up and the Lions down to 10 men as team discipline was brought into question. The Hill sailed through the second half adding another two and Leichhardt also losing another player to seal a comfortable 9-0 win Tigers Captain Josh De Nittis was lost for words after the match. “We didn’t think it was going to pan out this way, we

had some great sessions this week and the guys were really pumped up for this game,” he said. “The week off will give us a chance to regroup and salvage some injury issues, this is a great result but we still have room for improvement and another match to go and we’re looking forward to it.” This weekend Mareeba will take on Leichhardt at 7.30pm in Cairns to determine

who will face the Tigers in the grand final. In the men’s Premier reserve Edge Hill will come up against Stratford for the right to play against Mareeba in the grand final while in the Ladies Premier Division the Bulls will take on Leichhardt with the winner playing Edge Hill United come grand final day. Edge Hill United will come head to head with the Bulls in the Premier youth

with the winner to face off against Marlin Coast Rangers in the final. The Men’s Second Division will see Douglas Dragons and Marlin Coast Rangers play off for a meeting with Mareeba in the final. The men’s Third Division will see Southside Comets take on Leichhardt for the right to tackle Stratford United. Leichhardt and Stratford

will play off this weekend in the Colts Division to take on Edge Hill United in the grand final. In the Premier Ladies Reserves division JCU is patiently waiting to see who they play in the grand final when Marlin Coast Rangers take on Leichhardt. For all game times in all divisions, including junior finals, visit the FNQ Football website.
