Restaurant nominated for excellence

The

LOCAL foodie hotspot Obi’s Restaurant in Mareeba is one of four restaurants to become a finalist in this year’s Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence.

The restaurant owners Vanessa Harris and Obi Oberhauser, moved from their usual spot in Yungaburra to Mareeba in 2019 and they have since become a staple of main street dining.

The Awards for Excellence program provides recognition to those restaurants and caterers that excel in their field.

Being nominated in the Contemporary Australian Restaurant – Formal category, Obi’s is just one of four restaurants in Queensland and the Northern Territory to make it through to the finals.

Owner Obi is excited about making the finals and seeing how his restaurant really stacks up “It feels really good to get in the finals especially when we are going up against some of these elite restaurants,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have entered if I didn’t think we would make the finals, you’ve got to believe that you can make it.

“We’re up against some big restaurants places with five separate seating areas, by the water and unlimited budgets.”

The winners of the Awards for Excellence will be announced over a gala dinner in November with an array of meals on offer for the finalists.

FORUM: Candidates for the seat of Cook attended the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Cook Election Forum in Mareeba last week.

Cook forum kicks off election month CANDIDATES for the seat of Cook came together last Tuesday for the all important ‘Cook Election Forum’.

Held at the Mareeba United Football Club, the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce run forum was a chance for locals to meet with and hear from all six candidates.

To better inform themselves about each candidate and what they will offer prior to election day on October 31, constituents in attendance got the chance to ask questions that mattered most to them and the Mareeba community.

Prior to the forum, candidates were also asked six questions by the Chamber with the Q&A available for all to read at their leisure.

One of the six questions was “As the State Member for Cook, will you relocate the main office back to Mareeba within the Cook Electorate”.

All candidates except incumbent Cynthia Lui confirmed that they would move the office back to Mareeba.

“The lunch was a great chance for people to listen to each candidate, hear what they have to offer and how they will help Cook and Mareeba prosper.

“The questions the Chamber also asked each candidate are issues that are important to Mareeba and the answers will be heavily indluenced by the election result.”

ON the same day a writ for the next State election was issued, the Queensland Greens named Deby Ruddell as their candidate for the seat of Cook.

Mrs Ruddell, who lives with her husband in the Daintree, works in health, safety, environment and human resources at a local sugar mill.

“I was driven to get involved in politics because I feel angry and let down by the major parties, who care more for their corporate donors than they do the community,” Ms Ruddell said.

“I will never take one cent of corporate money, so I will always put the community first.”

Mrs Ruddell said she is campaigning for more jobs and better services for the region.

Heritage Centre celebrates 25 years 25 YEARS ago on October 14, the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre was opened and it stands as one of Mareeba’s’ most important icons, to both tourists and locals alike.

Boasting a nationally recognised collection of Mareeba Shire history the Heritage Centre has been run by a group of passionate volunteers since it was opened in 1995.

The centre was initially built by five locals who went around to local businesses asking for money to build a Visitor Information Centre which would double as a heritage museum.

General Manager Janet Greenwood has seen the history behind Mareeba and is proud to be a part of the centre.

“Building the centre was a vision of five gentlemen in the community and they brought it to life,” she said.

“It was for tourism and it was also for preserving Mareeba and the history behind it.

“We are excited to be celebrating the 25 years it is a great recognition for everyone that is involved and the community as a whole.”

When the centre was opened in 1995 it was handed over to the council debt free before changing hands again in 2016 to the Mareeba Heritage Centre

The gathering of Mareeba’s history initially started at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds where a small collection of history was on display before being acquired by the centre in its early days.

“When you think of it what has Mareeba got, Other than farmers and the wineries? We haven’t got anything else this is it,” he said.

“I’ve talked to tourists from all across Australia and they are amazed what this centre has got.”

The museum boasts collections of prospecting history to the largest tobacco exhibit in

Australia with all of the pieces being from the Mareeba Shire, truly showcasing the history of the shire.

A small breakfast and celebration was held on Wednesday morning to recognise the tireless work that the volunteers do at the Heritage Centre.

Growers big winners in Federal Budget AUSVEG, the peak industry body for the Australian vegetable industry, has welcomed the Government’s support of the vegetable growing and horticulture industry.

According to Ausveg The 2020/2021 Federal Budget includes a range of measures that benefit vegetable growers, including incentives to attract local, displaced workers to work on farms, assistance for exporting growers to continue to supply produce to key global markets, tax incentives to support business investment and growth, and funding for biosecurity and drought resilience.

In last week’s budget The Federal Government committed $17.4 million over two years for relocation assistance for workers who are prepared to work in regional areas for at least six weeks. Eligible workers will be able to receive one-off reloca-

tion rebates of up to $6,000.

The Budget also provides $317.1 million to extend the International Freight Assistance Mechanism into 2021, aiming to help Australian growers export their produce into key export markets to stay connected with their overseas customers.

AUSVEG CEO James Whiteside said that the Government had listened the concerns of industry and addressed the key areas that were impacting the industry’s confidence.

“The issues of ensuring growers have access to an adequate and reliable source of labour and continuing to service critical export markets are vital areas that needed to be addressed in the budget. We are pleased to see the Morrison Government has responded,” said Mr Whiteside.

“Growers will always have a preference to use local workers,

so the incentives listed in the Budget, including the $6,000 relocation rebate for workers willing to move to regional Australia to take up farm work will hopefully make an impact on the worker shortages that the industry is facing by encouraging more people to move to more regional areas.”

“AUSVEG encourages growers to lodge their labour requirements using the National Harvest Labour Information Service (NHLIS) and for locals looking for farm work to also use the service.”

President of FNQ Growers Joe Moro agreed and said some of the initiatives in the budget were good for the local economy.

“They are focusing on employment, to help kick start the economy but we would like to see more information on what they are going to do in the Far

North,” he said.

“We got some more information on the relocation packages which look very promising and it will be helpful for local producers.

“Overall the budget is a good start, especially with trying to get young people to reengage with employment.”

Mr Moro said overall he was optimistic about the budget but there would still be challenges.

“The biggest issue for us is securing labour for the agricultural industry. It will be interesting to see how many people take up the relocation offer and how effective it is.”

Christine Doan, Vice President of the Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) and Co-Chair of Startup and Innovation Tablelands (ST) said she wasn’t that thrilled about the budget.

Canegrowers call for election action CANEGROWERS has outlined an eight-point plan to the parties contesting the Queensland Election saying the plan will secure a sustainable, profitable and productive future.

The plan covers issues from reducing the costs of power and water to investing in a future agricultural workforce with school programs and post-school skills training.

Chairman for the Tableland Canegrowers Claude Santucci said that the points that matter most to Tableland sugar cane farmers is water and power.

“There are a lot of issues in

the plan that impact Tableland sugar growers namely the electricity and water costs,” he said.

“If the cost of water and electricity keep increasing we may question the viability of the crop.

“If we stop growing cane on the Tablelands it won’t have a huge impact on the world market but it will have a huge impact on the economy of the Tablelands.”

Canegrowers Chairman Paul Schembri is calling on the next Queensland Government to help the local sugarcane industry realise its full potential.

“We’re working harder and smarter and the next Queensland

Government can help us unleash our potential and realise some exciting opportunities by removing the obstacles that are holding us back,” he said.

“A vibrant sugarcane industry pays dividends to regional communities and the state economy; we can contribute to the COVID-19 economic recovery.

“Our Canegrowers analysis shows that for every $1 we spend growing sugarcane, $6.42 of further economic activity is generated in the Queensland economy, this supports jobs, businesses and communities.”

IN light of COVID-19 and the recent Federal Budget the Far North is getting some major dollars thrown its way for roads and infrastructure.

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have announced a $37.5 million safety upgrade along the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Atherton.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Queensland Government under the $415 million Roads Infrastructure Stimulus Package.

A TMR spokesperson said “It will deliver significant longterm improvements to traffic flow and safety with turning lanes to be built at key intersections.”

Works will also include installing wide centre line treatment, audible tactile line marking and safety barriers, as well as widening road shoulders.

The works are expected to start late this year (2020), in stages weather permitting, expected completion is mid-2021.

TMR estimate that it will generate an average of 121 direct jobs over the life of the project.

In March of this year TMR also started a $45 million program of similar safety upgrades

on the Kennedy Highway between Kuranda and Mareeba.

Work on these upgrades is expected to be completed in December 2021, weather permitting. Work includes key intersection upgrades, installation of wide centre line treatment, an overtaking lane, shoulder widening and installation of new safety barriers.

An average of 284 direct jobs will be supported over the life of this project.

TMR have also announced that they will be carrying out a $5.8 million package of six safety upgrades in the Tablelands and Cairns wider region as part of the Safer Roads Sooner Program.

Works include intersection upgrades, shoulder widening, installation of audible tactile line marking and wide centre line treatment, upgrading existing warning signs and installing vehicle activated signs.

The package is being carried out in a staged approach. Works started in June and are expected to be completed by February 2021, weather permitting.

Works are currently being undertaken at the following locations. Mareeba Dimbulah Road near Leadingham Creek Road to Bruce Weir Road, Ken-

nedy Highway (Mareeba to Ravenshoe) and Belson Road intersection, Kennedy Highway between Seary Road and Vicary Road, Kennedy Highway near Longlands Gap to Herberton Road, Kennedy Highway near Geraldton Road, Pine Creek to Yarrabah Road and Crossland Road and Redbank Road intersections.

An average of 12 direct jobs will be supported over the life of this project.

This month, TMR will also begin works on an $18 million package of safety upgrades on the Gillies Range Road.

Works include key intersection upgrades, installation of wide centre line treatment, new signs on high-risk curves and installation of a new roundabout.

Works are due to be completed in early 2022, weather permitting with an average of 71 jobs supported over the life of this project.

Looking further ahead in mid-2021, we will see the start of progressive sealing of two sections of The Burke Developmental Road (BDR) between Almaden and Chillagoe.

An average of 33 jobs will be supported over the life of this project.

Round up on Round up THE makers of weed killer Round UP, Bayer AG is up against a fast-approaching deadline in the US to settle remaining lawsuits over the use of its Roundup weedkiller. While this massive legal showdown takes place many councils in Far North Queensland are still using the controversial chemical.

Bayer Ag has reported ’significant progress’ on settlements, having finalised about 44,000 U.S. lawsuits, or about 35% of the more than 125,000 filed and unfiled cases alleging the herbicide causes cancer.

In June, it said it had reached agreements in 75% of the cases,

or about 94,000, as the centerpiece of an $11 billion comprehensive settlement.

Two class actions have been launched against Roundup in Australia and are still in their early stages. The first was led by a Melbourne gardener, who blamed his non-Hodgkin lymphoma, diagnosed in 2011 on Roundup.

In January of this year the Douglas Shire Council followed in the footsteps of Austria, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, and voted to ban the use of glyphosate (ROUND UP) in 133 public locations across the

Shire, including playgrounds, footpaths and retail areas.

The move came after the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer found in 2015 that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic.”

The Express Newspaper then asked other local councils what was their policy regarding Roundup.

The Cook Shire Council purchased a Steam Weeding machine in 2018 and in statement wrote.

“Steam weeding is currently used in areas where it is appropriate and effective to do so and

the Cook Shire Council does not currently use the product Roundup,” they said “Cook Shire Council is more than 105,000km2 making it the largest shire in Queensland according to land area; as such there are some areas where Cook Shire Council uses herbicides.

“In these instances, the products are used within recommended guidelines. Use of these products is monitored and regularly reviewed to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.”

Council has no immediate plans to move away from using roundup as it is the most cost-effective method to deal with weeds. Council employees follow appropriate workplace health and safety requirements when dealing with any chemical or hazardous substance.”

Tablelands Regional Council wrote: “We use pesticides and herbicides that are proven to be effective and provide value for money. At the same time, we trial new products and methodologies to improve effectiveness and reduce potential environmental and health impacts.

Products and methodologies recently (or still being) trialled include: Steam weeding, BioWeed Organic, Slasher Organic Weedkiller, Slasher and Lynx mix.

“We mostly use WeedMaster Duo, which is glyphosate-based, frog-friendly and registered for use in aquatic environments.”

spokesperson said “Douglas Shire Council adopted the Glyphosate Reduction Strategy during the previous 2019-20 Financial Year. One of the objectives under the strategy is to remove the use of glyphosate products in sensitive areas,’ they wrote “Glyphosate is banned for use at all playgrounds, areas near schools or child care facilities. It is also banned for use on footpaths in CBD zones and retail areas. Glyphosate is not to be used in sensitive areas north of the Daintree River wherever possible and selective herbicides (non-glyphosate products) are to be used on a case by case site specific basis.

“Council continues to use glyphosate to fulfil legal obligations in biosecurity and continues to investigate new reports and studies regarding glyphosate and any possible alternative options.

“Selective herbicides (nonglyphosate products) are used on a case-by-case, site-specific basis.”

The Etheridge Shire council was asked for comment, but The Express did not receive a reply by deadline.

Locals urged to “Get Ready” WHEN it comes to extreme weather events in Queensland, it’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’.

This week is Get Ready Queensland Week (12 to 18 October, 2020) which means it's time for all Queenslanders to ‘Get Ready’ for the upcoming severe weather season.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin is encouraging all residents to take part in the annual initiative and ensure they are well prepared for any surprises the summer months may bring.

“While we cannot control the weather or when the next disaster will hit, we need to be aware and more importantly prepared,” Cr Toppin said.

“Get Ready Queensland is a timely reminder to take the necessary steps to protect what is most important to us.”

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted wetter than average conditions this year due to the formation of a La Niña in the tropical Pacific.

“We are potentially facing an extortionary summer season with dangers of fires in the leadup to the wet and the La Nina event flagging large amounts of rainfall and an early cyclone season for northern Australia,” Cr Toppin said.

NQ First announces croc culling policy

NORTH Queensland party NQ First have announced that Crocodiles would be culled under a controversial ‘shoot to kill’ policy, if NQ First secures the balance of power at the upcoming State Election.

NQ First Leader and Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan said the policy provided a ‘North and Far North Queensland solution to a North and Far North Queensland problem.’

“We can either pussyfoot around or take decisive action in boosting community safety in North, Far North and Central Queensland,” he said.

“If there is a crocodile on one of our beaches in a populated area, it’ll be shot by a licensed contractor whose job it will be to go in and deal with the problem as a matter of urgency.

“NQ First is offering a solution and that solution is a sustainable culling program. It’s all well protecting the crocs, but what about the people?”

Mr Costigan also said NQ First wanted to see a fullyfledged croc industry established, similar to the Northern Territory, that incorporated the harvesting of eggs, the increased use of crocodile meat in restaurants and the manufacturing of leather products.

Dr Adam Britton, who is a Crocodile specialist with Big Gecko and a senior research associate at Charles Darwin University, said that crocodiles are currently a resource that a lot of people benefit from.

“If you’re talking about culling crocodiles you talking about removing a resource that benefits

the local environment and also local tourism,” he said “People come from all over Australia and the world to see our crocodiles, tourism is very important to FNQ and removing one of the important assets is one of the last things that tourism operators would want.

“We need to stop this old way of thinking of shooting everything; people are willing to travel a long way to see crocodiles in their native habitat.”

Dr Britton said that culling crocodiles would actually have a negative effect on the FNQ economy. “If you go out there and start shooting crocodiles you’re also going to be directly competing with Aboriginal groups who are harvesting crocodile eggs, which is an industry that has only just started to get off the ground.”

New wind farm expected to generate 150 local jobs WORK on a new $380 million wind farm near Ravenshoe is expected to begin before the end of the year, creating 150 jobs.

A sales deal with publiclyowned utility manufacturer CleanCo has given the project the critical mass to proceed.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said Neoen Energy would build the Kaban Green Power Hub near Ravenshoe, now that CleanCo had agreed to buy 110 MW of the wind farm’s output.

“Queensland has an economic plan for post-COVID recovery and affordable, reliable energy supply underpins that plan,” Dr Lynham said.

“That plan includes supporting emerging industries like renewable energy because that supports jobs.

“This project is proceeding because the power purchase agreement with CleanCo has

given Neoen certainty.

Emergency Services Minister and Member for Barron River Craig Crawford welcomed the news about jobs and farm income.

“This 157 MW wind farm will mean 150 construction jobs as well as revenue for local farmers hosting the turbines,” he said.

“I understand that Neoen has also been working hard with our local business community to ensure maximum opportunity for locals when early works start later this year.

“This is another great example of our publicly-owned energy businesses working for Queenslanders.”

Neoen Australia’s managing director Louis de Sambucy said Neoen was delighted to be working with CleanCo and Powerlink on their second Queensland project together.

“This agreement underscores our deepening involvement in the state’s clean energy transition, and we are proud to be supporting Queensland’s progress towards its ambitious target of 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030,” Mr Sambucy said.

“We look forward to Kaban delivering an economic boost to Far North Queensland and supporting the region’s recovery from the impact of COVID-19.”

The project will also provide revenue to local farmers hosting the turbines as well as Neoen establishing an annual $50,000 Community Benefit Fund for local community building initiatives.

First generation is expected in 2023 and the project will generate enough energy to power about 95,900 Queensland homes.

2020 has been a tough year for local farmers, with bushfires, wild weather and a global pandemic. Now as we get closer to the end of the year farmers are facing labour shortages and dropping fruit prices.

Marcello Avolio is a Mareeba Lychee farmer who said this year he won’t be seeing a bumper season.

“We will probably start picking in November, but the main crop will be towards the end of November,” Mr Avolio said.

“This year won’t be a bumper crop, but it will be ok, there may even be a few lychees ar-

riving on the markets very soon from other growers.”

Some farmers have raised concerns that establishments that use bulk lychees like high end hotels and bars are still yet to reopen.

Mr Avolio said his main concern this year wasn’t price, but getting enough staff.

“COVID didn’t affect me last season, but this year it’s too early to tell,” he said.

“If you go by the numbers staffing could be an issue, I’m already getting inquiries from people looking for work, but when the season kicks in I will

be looking for about 15 people.

“In the past a small amount were locals where the rest of my workforce was backpackers.”

This year Mr Avolio said he is hoping some high school students or university students will come around and lend a hand.

“School students are another place we are looking at as potential workers,” he said.

“Last year we hired most of our staff at the end of November and beginning of December.”

Due to a La Nina being declared, BOM has indicated an

earlier and wetter wet season which is good and bad news for Lychee farmers.

“Lychees can dry out, so a little bit of rain could improve the fruit, but we need to worry about disease pressure if it’s too wet,” he said.

“A bit of moisture on the fruit is a good thing but if it rains 3-4 days straight it’s not going to be so good.

“The crop looks ok, but a little more moisture would be nice and some workers to lend a hand in a few weeks’ time would be a big help.”

Firefighters needed for raging season

The Kuranda Fire Station is solely run by Auxiliary Firefighters and they are now searching for more to join their ranks with the looming threat of bushfires.

Auxiliary Firefighters are paid part-time professional firefighters and are only one step down from full time. They have the same training and skillset as a full-time firefighter.

Captain of the Kuranda Fire Station Luke Mynott has been an Auxiliary Firefighter for

nearly 15 years coupled with his trade of painting.

“The job can be challenging but it can be rewarding at times going out there and making a difference in times of need,” he said.

“Make the enquiry look into it, it’s a great job but it’s not a job for everyone.

“It is definitely worthwhile making a difference in people’s lives and the community.”

Donation to boost Royal Flying Doctors THE Royal Flying Doctor Service Near and Far Auxiliary (RFDS) has been given a helping hand to save lives with a donation courtesy of the Atherton Lioness Club.

With Lioness Clubs across the country being disbanded many were left with unused money from their various fundraising events.

The Atherton Lioness Club’s $500 donation was born of a need to support the many other worthy community fundraising agencies in Queensland.

said that this donation could not have come at a better time.

“Fundraising for the RFDS has been limited to the collection tins widely dispersed throughout North Queensland during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

“Fortunately with the easing of restrictions throughout the state we expect to be back into full fundraising mode soon.”

Australian buyers eyeing off Dairy Farmers BEGA Cheese is rumoured to be a strong contender to buy Lion’s Dairy and Drinks business after Treasurer Josh Frydenberg blocked the sale to Chinas Mengniu Dairy Co. China Mengniu Dairy Co withdrew from its $600 million bid for Lion Dairy & Drinks last month after the Treasurer signalled that he was not going to allow it to proceed.

Lion owns and distributes brands such as Dairy Farmers Milk, Big M, Pura, Master, and Dare flavoured milk and Berri Juice and Farmers Union and Yoplait yoghurt.

It’s believed that Bega has gone as far as to send proposals to accounting firms in recent weeks to help oversee its financial due diligence.

Bega’s executive chairman Barry Irvin said that Bega had long been interested in the potential appeal of Lion’s packaged milk, yoghurt and juice business to complement its own strengths in cheese, formula and milk powders.

Mr Irvin said Bega remained “open to further dairy consolidation opportunities” and argued that the company was in a strong position to capitalise on growing demand for natural products.

Bega was founded in 1899

as a farmer co-operative in the Bega Valley and listed in 2011, and still calls itself “The Great Australian Food Company.”

In 2017, Bega finalised a $460 million deal with Mondelez International for its grocery and cheese business, giving it the licence to manufacture Kraft cheese and peanut butter as well as Vegemite.

Another starter in the race could be the farmer owned Norco dairy co-operative which has also expressed interest in putting up a bid for at least part of the $600 million Lion Dairy and Drinks business.

Norco chief executive Michael Hampson agreed acquiring Lion's production and supply chain, stretching from Perth to North Queensland, could be "too big to do all by ourselves".

"However, we could work with Lion or another party," he said.

The Norco brand is the fastest growing milk brand in NSW and Queensland, lifting almost 40 per cent in 2019-20.

According to Millaa Millaa dairy farmer and Chairman of the Dairy Farmers co-op James Geraghty there are other big hitters looking to snap up a Lion Dairy and Drinks.

“Bega are the most obvious contender, Norco doesn’t

have the money and from what I understand Lion do not want to break the company up, they want to sell the business as a whole,” he said “Andrew Twiggy Forrest has also expressed interest and he has very deep pockets and there’s also another group, Tanarra Capital who are a private equity firm who have a lot of respected investment bankers.”

“As a farmer I would pick Bega, I would prefer Bega as they are already in the market and they already have a relationship with farmers.

“From what I’ve heard, Lion want a quick sale and that means no foreign investment board.”

Mr Geraghty does have a message for politicians while deal is up in the air “I would like to see Jacqui Lambie and Pauline Hanson speak to the people that are involved in this and offer some support,” he said “Seeing as they said Dairy Farmers should be Australian owned, they should be offering support of some description.”

“I’ve left numerous messages for Pauline about this issue and but I’ve never received a call back.”

Volunteer and give back to your local community

CONNECT: Margaret McCreath, who volunteers at the Atherton Tablelands Visitors Centre, said its great helping people to discover the Tablelands.

TABLELANDS Regional Council is encouraging residents to take advantage of the many volunteering opportunities that Council has to offer.

Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew said volunteers are integral to the running of visitor information centres, galleries, libraries, and the museum and community nursery.

“Without them we wouldn’t be able to provide these services to our community and visitors,” he said.

“You don’t need any special skills; we provide all the necessary training and ongoing support.

“The hours and days are flexible so it’s possible to fit in a few hours around other commitments.

“The best part about vol-

unteering is that it gives you a chance to give back to your community by sharing your knowledge, at the same time meeting new locals and visitors and maybe learning new skills.”

Margaret McCreath and Arthur Green are regular volunteers at the Atherton Tablelands Visitor Information Centre.

“I get a good feeling from helping people discover the region and I enjoy meeting and talking to people from diverse backgrounds and countries,” Margaret said “I’ve made some great friends among the other volunteers and enjoy spending time with them on familiarisation tours.

“As a retiree I enjoy the social aspect of volunteering, and its great talking to people about the Tablelands.

“I get a lot of self-satisfaction from volunteering and I really enjoy the camaraderie,” Arthur said.

Robyn Andersen has been volunteering at the Community Revegetation Nursery for 18 months and since she started volunteering said she has increased her knowledge of local vegetation and the environment in general.

“I learn something new every day I am here,” she said.

“It’s very rewarding to see the results of our work and feel appreciated for the contributions we make, the social interaction is a bonus.”

ON Sunday, October 11, more than 117 people set off on foot across the Tablelands fundraising for Crime Stoppers Far North.

There were two walks that participants could complete including a 14-kilometre round trip from Walkamin to Mt Emerald winds farms and back. The second walk was an 8-kilometre walk from Walkamin to the Rocky Creek igloo and back.

Committee Member of Crime Stoppers North Queensland Branch Norma Moloney said that the day was a resounding success. “Everybody enjoyed themselves and we had a lot of positive feedback,” she said “A lot people were asking when the next walk was going to be as they wanted to come back and do it again.”

At the time of printing they had raised approximately $5000 dollars which Norma said they would use to build a mobile BBQ. “The BBQ trailer will enable us to go further afield, we will be able to go to the Cape and out to Normanton,” she said “If there is a community event happening anywhere in FNQ, we can take it with us and set up a BBQ. “It will help us to raise funds running a sausage sizzle, but it will also give us a visual presence across the Tablelands and The Cape.

“We want people to know that if they have any information or witness anything suspicious they can report it anonymously.”

Norma said she wanted to say thanks to the team at RATCH Australia for allowing them to walk around their property oth-

erwise the event wouldn’t have happened.

“We thought a walk around the wind turbines would be a great way to start,” she said.

“On the wind farm walk the oldest person was 82 and the youngest was 7 years old, so we had great support from right across the community.”

The idea for a charity walk came to Norma when she completed the Speewah to the hat walk in August. “I got thinking about ways to raise funds, I thought a hike would be a fun way to raise funds,” she said.

“We had a huge amount of community support, but we are always looking for new members or volunteers.”

Crime Stoppers Queensland is a registered charity and volunteer community organisation.

Their purpose is to empower the community to provide information that supports the solving and prevention of crime.

Crime Stoppers was first established in 1989 as national collective of eight Crime Stopper organisations operating in every state and territory in Australia.

According to their website “Crime Stoppers is Australia’s most trusted information receiving service for people wanting to share what they know about unsolved crimes and suspicious activity without saying who they are.”

The Palaszczuk government has delivered $45 million to upgrade the Kennedy Highway between Kuranda and Mareeba creating 280 jobs. I will continue to work with the local community to identify priorities to improve safety and to support job-creating economic development.

Cost effective measures need to be undertaken to ensure relocation to Mareeba is minimal. Hence, as an Independent, I would push for the Office Cook to be relocated in a shared office location with existing Qld Government agencies ie. Qld Department of Transport and Main Roads located or Qld Department of Natural Resources Mines & Energy in Mareeba. Both State Government agencies are approximately 5 minutes from the main CBD and are existing State Government services accessed by the public.

The land has been reserved to preserve the option of its future use if a viable business case can be developed. I am committed to exploring other options that are viable. In the meantime, our government has invested $24 million into upgrades to water infrastructure on the Tablelands.

For our electorate there are two other schemes that I believe require further consideration, that is the water harvesting of the Johnstone and the Lakeland Irrigation Scheme. Build an alternate route from Mareeba (near Davies Creek Bridge) to Cairns (near Reservoir Road Cairns CBD), bypassing Kuranda. This will open up the Cape and Gulf to grow the region. It would cut 20 minutes off the trip from Mareeba to Cairns. Sealing the Ootan Road, starts a few km from Almaden and comes out 20km south of Mt Garnet.

Finish sealing the road to Chillagoe. Fight to upgrade the road from Lakeland to Almaden for road train access.

North Johnstone Transfer is already an approved project with engineering designs that was planned during construction of the Tinaroo Dam. At the time it was acknowledge the catchment would not be big enough to sustain increased farming and the North Johnstone Transfer was planned to provide this extra capacity. The KAP has already pushed the Minister to direct his Department to undertake hydrological studies. The KAP is fully committed to this project, as it is an affordable solution and will provide extra capacity of water for the agricultural industry.

DESMOND TALEY North Queensland First If NQ First secures the balance of power, we’ll deliver our $2b Roads to Revival program, financed by mining royalties. This includes a $500m commitment towards a tunnel linking Cairns with the Tablelands. Federal Government funding would also be sought for this multibillion-dollar project, driving jobs and economic growth after COVID-19.

YODIE BATZKE Independent It is a given, further funding must be secured to ensure major roads such as Ootan Road are accessible to our agricultural and livestock industry. In September 2015 the infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resource Committee on the Sustainable Ports Development Bill 2015 recommended both Cairns and Mourilyan Ports be reclassified as 'priority ports', unfortunately the NorthEast Shipping Management Plan has put an end to this. Mareeba and surrounding regional agriculture and livestock industry cannot wait for 'something' to happen to Cairns Port and therefore access to alternate ports via inland road must be considered and supported 100%.

Access to southern ports in Victoria and South Australia via inland roads is the most viable option for our agricultural industry and it is therefore imperative Ootan Road be developed. As an Independent holding the balance of power I am committed to securing appropriate funding arrangements for major infrastructure projects such as Ootan Road and other roads currently seen as diminutive by the current QLD Government.

BRETTLYN NEAL One Nation Whilst the current upgrade of the Kennedy Highway to Kuranda is 20 years overdue it will not change the fact that an alternative route sits idle, just to the north.

Upgrading Quaids Road to today’s standards will not disrupt current traffic flows and will offer transport travelling north of Mareeba as an alternative.

It includes construction of the Nullinga Dam and the Lakeland Dam. Down south, they’re already taking our jobs and billions in mining royalties – we’re saying they can’t have our water too.

YODIE BATZKE Independent In the Seat of Cook both water security, storage and provision is imperative and a basic human right that is continually playing second fiddle to other regions. Holding the balance of power as an Independent, will provide the leverage needed to ensure water security for the region is addressed.

I am committed 100% in working cooperatively with all levels of government, in particular Local Government Associations with a mandate to provide and maintain water infrastructure in accordance to current planning schemes.

Upgrade of existing aging water infrastructure cannot be ignored and must also be addressed simultaneously when discussing water security.

BRETTLYN NEAL One Nation Nullinga Dam is the only common sense approach for water security to not only Mareeba but also Cairns. Harvesting water from the North Johnstone in wet years will help in the short term but it is merely a bandaid solution for a growing farming sector and a population. If the cost altitude was applied when Tinaroo was mooted it would not exist today.

What is being done now is not working so as a start we need to listen to the people on the ground not the bureaucrats. Crime is at different levels in different locations for instance.

I would ask why they are, what are they doing differently.

My commitment to health services in Mareeba is clear with our government delivering a $10 million renovation of the Mareeba Hospital and a CT Machine. We recently opened a new ambulance station and new staff accommodation for health workers. I will continue to support the growth of healthcare capacity in Mareeba to reduce reliance on the Cairns Hospital.

Mareeba Health services some 6 years ago was dwindling and a group called Save Mareeba Hospital became involved. We had town meetings and as a result of continuous lobbying to the Government and CHHHS. We have got more services. I have always been part of that group and our fight is far from completed. As the member I will continually be at the door of the minister lobbying for better health in our electorate.

Youth offenders would be taken out of their environment to Lake Julius (in remote North West Queensland) for a period of 6-12 months to work and be taught life skills - to reintegrate back into society. It is based on the very successful program run by Geoff Guest at Petford for many decades.

DESMOND TALEY North Queensland First NQ First announced our ‘War on Crime’ on August 21 when we released a comprehensive 10-point plan. It includes tougher penalties for offenders, the return of high-speed police pursuits, an extra 500 police officers from Rockhampton up to Cape York and the establishment of the Cape York Police Tracker Centre at Coen.

YODIE BATZKE Independent Police cannot solve or prevent crime on their own. All levels of Government with community involvement in addressing crime through local solutions is important, with prevention as a priority. In other States, security services have been established within a Local Government Association have proven to be effective in preventing crime, however rate payers have paid for these services. To ensure rate payers are not burdened with such expenses, I will be lobbying for additional funds to be allocated to our 77 Local Government Associations for the establishment of a security service patrol within each Council.

BRETTLYN NEAL One Nation As a youth programs manager specialising in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, more youth engagement programs and increased financial support for community grounds is essential to decreasing youth crime. Whilst the QPS do their utmost best to tackle crime, their jobs are made a lot harder while magistrates continue to hand down inadequate sentences.

Because Dimbulah and Atherton are in the Hill electorate and the KAP’s Shane Knuth is their Member of Parliament. Bob Katter, KAP Member for Kennedy, secured $2M for the Mareeba Hospital (it is virtually unheard of to get Federal Funding for a State hospital). Vote for KAP in Cook and I will fight on this track record, to get improved health services and funding to the Mareeba hospital.

What will you do to eradicate crocodiles from our environment?

CYNTHIA LUI MP Australian Labor Party I support the implementation of the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan. It identifies Mareeba as an atypical habitat zone. That is, there should be no crocodiles there. Crocodiles should be removed from the area around Mareeba.

NIPPER BROWN Liberal National Party Extend the removal zone to include the Barron River. LNP will always put people before crocs and all crocodiles in removal Zones, regardless of size or behaviour will be removed. Problem crocs in other zones will be removed within 3 days.

TANIKA PARKER Katter’s Australian Party The KAP has already been proactive on this issue and introduced into Parliament the Safer Waterways Bill in 2017. It places greater value on human life than on the lives of crocodiles. It aims to eliminate from our waterways all crocodiles that pose a threat to human life while protecting crocodiles (in areas of natural habitat) from becoming endangered as a species. Mareeba is not a natural habitat for crocodiles and they need to be removed. The ALP and LNP voted against this legislation.

DESMOND TALEY North Queensland First If NQ First secures the balance of power, we’ll implement a robust crocodile culling program. It will be a North and Far North Queensland solution to a North and Far North Queensland problem, not a South-East Queensland solution. After all, public safety is paramount and hence, NQ First’s nononsense ‘shoot to kill’ policy.

DESMOND TALEY North Queensland First If NQ First secures the balance of power, we’ll provide additional services at the Mareeba Hospital, including renal dialysis. We’ll also increase funding to the patient travel subsidy scheme (PTSS) by 20% and make changes to the system, so the not-for-profit sector can utilise their resources in transporting people to medical appointments.

YODIE BATZKE Independent At present Mareeba Hospital provides Level 3 in Clinical Services. Other Hospitals in this district classified as a Level 3 also includes Mossman, Tully and Innisfail, yet Mareeba Hospital provides health care to a population of approximately 20K, still remains a Level 3 in Clinical Services. Mareeba plays a vital role in providing access to services for regional and remote communities in Cape York and thus should be elevated to a Level 4 in Clinical Services inclusive of a fully functional ICU Unit. As an Independent I will lobby for further development of an ICU that provides 5 intensive care and high dependency beds to adult and paediatric patients who are seriously ill or with life threatening injuries.

BRETTLYN NEAL One Nation The current upgrades of the Mareeba hospital are solely due to ‘save the Mareeba hospital’ services and the communities that support them. I too will continue to support and fight alongside them. Making the wider Mareeba area more attractive to health professionals will help to secure even better health services.

YODIE BATZKE Independent Whilst current legislation aims to conserve biodiversity by protecting wildlife and its habitat, it has indirectly affected the social and economic sustainability of remote communities throughout Cook. Locals fear swimming in regular swimming locations and local aquaculture businesses, diving and tourism activities are severely affected due to increase in crocodile numbers. Solutions must be looked at in providing alternate methods of economic development for coastal communities.

Current Wildlife Trade Management Plan – Queensland Crocodile Farming and Crocodile Egg Harvesting 1 November 2018 - 31 October 2023, identified an initial pilot harvest of crocodile eggs is proposed to be conducted at Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire, on the west coast of Cape York, authorised by licence and running for a total of ten years. I will be lobbying for further pilots to be extended to other Indigenous Local Government Associations in partnership with Traditional Owner Ranger programs, in Cape York Peninsula to assist in reducing the proliferation of crocodile numbers.

BRETTLYN NEAL One Nation Unlike coastal areas of Cook, the upper reaches of the Mitchell and Barron Rivers, historically, have estuarine crocodiles. Eradication programs, not management programs, need to be implemented as soon as possible before an innocent person is taken and local businesses and farmers suffer due to this problem.

Grazing family joins forces to prevent erosion A MALANDA grazing family has joined forces with Terrain NRM to make long term environmental changes on their property.

Trevor and Jean Petersen are working with natural resource management organisation, Terrain NRM, on a makeover that includes earthworks, tree-planting, fencing, a solar-powered

water supply for cattle and a new way of managing pastures.

Trevor Petersen said the family chanced on the opportunity of working with Terrain NRM while looking for help to manage an erosion problem along waterways running through their Malanda property.

February floods took a section of bank out,’’ Mr Peterson said.

“We lost a lot of soil down the creek, so something had to be done.”

The Petersen’s now have a modified creek crossing after earthworks including bank re-shaping, rock and gravel placement. They are also now putting up fences either side of the crossing to keep cattle off more than a kilometre of water course.

Terrain NRM’s Vanessa Drysdale said 5000 trees and grasses would be planted along the waterway, a tributary flowing into Williams Creek and the North Johnstone River.

“We do the earthworks and revegetation, and the Petersen family undertakes the fencing and installation of off-stream watering infrastructure,’’ she said. “The family is also responsible for implementing the grazing management practice changes.

“This combination will stop an estimated 120 tonnes of fine sediment a year from flowing into the Johnstone River – the equivalent of 15 to 20 truckloads. Changes on properties, however big or small they are, really make a difference.”

The work is part of the $2.3 million Upper Johnstone

Malanda’s Connie, Ken and Trevor Petersen have joined forces with Terrain NRM in the hope of improving their land through earthworks to repair erosion.

Integrated Project, funded by the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Investment Program. It includes workshops for landholders on grazing systems, soil health and sustainable resource and business management.

“We usually run a cell graz-

ing system here – rotating 40 head of cattle through 50 acres,’’ he said.

“Each of our paddocks has the same grazing pressure, now we’ll have smaller paddocks and manage them differently.

“We’ll be doing things like grazing one more heavily while

resting another, and looking at each paddock more closely to assess our pasture.

“The goal is a more environmentally-friendly way of working, for the land and water quality, without affecting productivity.”

New water infrastructure for FNQ ONE cannot believe the comments re additional water infrastructure by proponents who are supposed to look after the future prosperity of the Atherton Tablelands.

By criticizing the Mareeba Shire Council for its protection of the site for Nalinga Dam from development that would require compensation these people are giving State governments an easy out when it comes to the actual construction of water storages.

The Collins weir (the site of the proposed Nalinga Dam) to my knowledge has no water quality issues having swam, fished in it and camped on its shores.

It is as if the aim of these people is to derail any chance of additional water projects getting the nod and one wonders what their motive is.

If you want the provision of additional water projects to fail then the way these people are showing division in our community is one sure way for a Government to opt for a do nothing approach.

Yes the retired Mayor of Atherton wants the works to occur in his area but think of the tourist potential for the Mareeba Shire if Nalinga becomes a reality.

Water skiers and others would certainly love a lake

that does not suffer the winter drizzle.

Regardless which proposal gets built the inescapable truth for the Atherton Tableland Agriculture and communities is Additional Water.

Please confine these deliberations to Committees designed to come up with the best option and not grand stand in the media at election time.

Kuranda opportunity A MILLION-DOLLAR opportunity has just been presented to the Mareeba Shire Council which would solve the present crisis with closing the Kuranda cemetery and the ongoing lack of Council land in the Kuranda region.

Thirty years ago, the Council sold most of its land around Kuranda to fund building a town hall. Kuranda lost its land but never got its hall. Council also sold the land it had set aside for the extension of the cemetery leaving a situation where the cemetery will need to close in a couple of years. Councils suggestion has been to develop a cemetery ‘off country’ and this has raised the ire of a large part of the Kuranda community.

A cleared 13hectare property of mostly flat land has become available adjoining the existing cemetery.

OPINION WITH only a few weeks from the election I’m still yet to hear anything that will sway my vote. Instead what I’m hearing is a lot insults and accusations. All sides of politics are pointing their fingers at their opposition saying that ‘they haven’t done this’ or ‘they will wreck that’ etc.

It’s a bit like going into a job interview and telling the recruiter why they shouldn’t

Development of the back section of this land into the future cemetery is cheaper than existing proposals because only a foot bridge is necessary from the existing cemetery and vehicular access is already available from Kuranda Heights Road.

The additional 7 – 10 hectares in the front of the property would remain available for use in the provision of community services into the future.

After decades of selling Karanda’s community land, it is time to reverse those past transgressions.

When asked the very simple of question of how would they fix the Kuranda Range.

Only two candidates gave specific answers, the others either talked of having more conversations or generally had no solution whatsoever.

At the moment we have a lot of politicians telling us what we don’t want, but none of them telling us what we do want. We want to hear specifics, we don’t

want more conversations or more reports or even more promises The member for Cook, Cynthia Lui was asked about her solution for the Kuranda Range but responded with “The Palaszczuk Government has delivered 45 million dollars to upgrade the Kennedy Highway between Kuranda and Mareeba.” Telling us what you have done is very different to telling us

what you will do.

This state election seems to be all about throwing shade at opposition candidates rather than candidates backing themselves and their policies.

This is why we have seen the rise of Donald Trump and Pauline Hanson, not because they are good politicians or even tactical geniuses but because they back themselves and their

policies, regardless of how outrageous they may seem.

The big parties do not reward intellect or innovation; instead they reward political loyalty and point scoring.

The major parties are definitely losing their political shine; instead we are left with the minor parties.

So we had better be careful for what we wish for.

Blitzing start for Atherton first grade Atherton Batsman Tom Boorman hit 51 runs against Cassowary Coast on Saturday.

ATHERTON 1st Grade got off to the best possible start taking maximum points in their Cricket Far North 40-over match against Cassowary Coast at Loder Park on Saturday.

Chris Adams and Dan Parnell got Atherton off to a great start with a 58 run opening partnership. Paul Nasser and Tom Boorman followed suit piling on 111 runs off 94 balls, both notching up 50's in the partnership. Atherton lost a

Home semi-final for Bulls AN undisciplined Mareeba Bulls showed no sign of improvement at the back end of the season as they were hammered 4-0 by the premiership winning Edge Hill Tigers on Saturday night at Borzi Park.

The 4-0 thumping meant the Tigers completed their season undefeated outlining the enormous gap between them and the rest of the field.

The saving grace for the Bulls came when the Innisfail Cutters only managed a 4-1 win over Stratford United, meaning that the Bull’s, who finished the season in third position, will have a home knockout semifinal this weekend against Innisfail.

The Men’s Premier Reserves have been sensational this year and finished the season off in style after seeing off their third placed opponents Edge Hill United 7-0 which triggered celebrations well into the night at the Club. The Reserves will pay a qualifying semi-final against Stratford united at Tiger Park this Saturday Night.

Travis Wadley has followed in the footsteps of his oldest sister after winning the recent Queensland Youth Sailing Championships last month.

Ladies break into bull riding Sailor soars to new heights A LOCAL sailor has followed in the footsteps of his older sister when Travis Wadley competed and dominated the 2020 Queensland Youth Sailing Championships last month.

Taking place on September 23 the 2020 Queensland Youth Sailing Championships was hosted in Yeppoon at the Keppel Bay Sailing Club and saw young sailors from all across Australia attending.

The day was rough with conditions ranging from a perfect 10-12 knots to mast breaking 25 knots.

This did not discourage the young sailor as Travis came home with four race wins in the Laser 4.7 fleet earning his name

a spot on the trophy, joining his older sister Kristen.

Travis was overwhelmed when he was awarded the trophy and is looking to surpass his sister, aiming to place his name on the trophy more than twice.

“It feels really good to be able to win up against some good competition,” he said.

“It feels amazing getting my name on the trophy with my sister.

“I’m hoping to win it a couple more times.”

Up next for the rising sailing star is the Sail Brisbane event in Brisbane before he heads off to Sydney in the new year for another sailing competition.

TWO years ago, Bailee Pizzardi decided that she would break her way into the massive male dominated sport of bull riding and try her luck with some of the toughest and rankest bulls around.

With a background in barrel racing the Mareeba local was forced to sell her horses when she moved from Tamworth NSW to Mareeba and in that moment she decided to take up bull riding.

After attending a bull riding school in Biboohra, Bailee

fell in love with the sport and has since set out to become a bull rider, even winning at the Laura Rodeo.

Bailee sees riding bulls as a way to pay respect to her younger brother and friend who have passed away.

“I ride to make my brother proud because he cannot be here to watch me,” she said.

“It’s a good a sport even though it is dangerous and still very enjoyable.

“You get really nervous and that pump of adrenaline but

when I’m on it it’s nothing but excitement.”

From riding in rodeos to the more recent Great Northern Bull Riding Series last fortnight, Bailee has been on and off a fair share of mini bulls.

Mia McNeill is another rider local to Mareeba who often participates in the Great Northern Bull Riding Series even coming runner up for last year’s Mini Bull Series Title.

Peter Brown Organiser of the Great Northern Bull Riding Series has seen a total of three

women bull riders in her 30 year career and would love to see more.

“When I was riding and then organising I’ve seen about two or three women riders over that time,” he said.

“It’s good to see these young girls getting on the minis and in bull riding.

“The industry is very male dominated and I don’t know why, there is no reason why a lady cannot ride a bull better than a guy.”
