IT’S provided countless entertainment for Tableland’s residents for years but Malanda’s iconic Video World store has closed its doors for the final time with the building to soon welcome a new future business.

Video World has enjoyed a proud history in the village; it first opened in 1994 then moved

to its current location in 2001 before owner Geoff English acquired it in 2015.

A lack of reliable internet in the Tablelands means hiring a DVD or video has proved a reliable way to watch the latest movies and thus the business has remained popular in the age of Netflix and other streaming services.

A spokesperson for the shop

said “it was time” to sell and that the main highlights over the years was simply providing a source of entertainment and happiness for customers.

Think you can pick what the most popular rental has been over the years at the video shop?

Maybe Forrest Gump? Or Shrek? Perhaps Dirty Dancing?

Not even close, staff confirmed with The Express that Australian

crime thriller “Wolf Creek” has been its most rented video/DVD since records started being kept back in 2002.

One thing is for sure the little shop on English St that has welcomed guests on many a Friday night over the years will be missed.

Locals hope that another fruitful, sustainable business will open in its place.

Locals growing frustration with NBN activation delays

TABLELANDS residents have called for immediate improvements to their internet services as frustration increases from those that have waited months or even more than a year for their NBN to be activated.

Several Tablelands families, local business owners and others disconnected their ADSL before NBN was available to be connected and combined with living in poor mobile reception areas

means some don’t have, or can’t rely on, their current home internet services.

This is proving particularly inconvenient, as mentioned, for those who run their businesses from home.

Just days ago The Express obtained an email from an NBN provider to a local customer in which it addressed concerns regarding the matter.

“We have had an update from NBN regarding the shortage of appointments that is currently

affecting the connection of your service,” the letter started.

“Unfortunately, there have been interruptions with NBN activation appointments, which are out of our control.

“In some cases, no appointments are being made available at all. This is impacting all NBN orders nationwide, not just your service, and we don’t know when more appointments will be released.

“In certain situations, regardless of how much we push NBN

for an appointment, we are not getting one assigned to orders.

“If we encounter any appointment issues for your order, our service delivery team will reach out to you.

“We feel your pain and, even though it’s out of our hands, our team is doing everything they can to ensure our customers get an appointment.”

Wongabel’s Tammy Pianta is one resident who needs her NBN connected as soon as possible.

“My four children have had

to go through school with little more than a dial up network – it’s ridiculous,” Ms Pianta told The Express.

“Apparently our street doesn’t have enough plug-ins to keep up with demand even for ADSL so I cannot see NBN becoming a resource anytime soon.

“Our internet access is scattered to say the least so I’m looking into getting skymesh via satellite at the moment.”

Meanwhile, hundreds of technicians working on the NBN

project across Australia have walked off the job in recent days in the wake of cuts to their pay, frustrations over job bookings and scheduling and what employees claim is mistreatment at work.

CEPU national president Shane Murphy has called for Minister for Communications, Paul Fletcher to announce a senate inquiry into the failed NBN rollout and the issues that continue to plague it.

Lengthy works to begin THE Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has confirmed it’s set to start the next stages of safety upgrades on the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Atherton.

The works are expected to start in the coming weeks and will be carried out between Vicary Road, Mareeba and the start of the 80km/h zone in Tolga.

TMR advised the works will include vegetation removal within the road corridor as required for road widening and to divert traffic during the works.

“During construction of the upgrades there will be numerous roadwork sites along this section of road,”

TMR confirmed.

“Lengthy traffic delays are expected during this time and road users should plan their journey accordingly.

“Crews will monitor queueing lengths to minimize wait times as much as possible.”

Nearby residents have been advised they may experience truck and machinery noise while the works are being undertaken.

The $37.5M project is part of the $415M jointly funded Australian and Queensland Government’s Roads Infrastructure Stimulus Package.

TMR believes the project will be completed early next year.

However, current signs point towards a recent surge in employment opportunities – the only sticking point? Finding suitable and able candidates to fill the current vacancies.

“We currently have a few admin positions and a lot of retail vacancies at the moment,” QITE general manager Jillian

Trout told The Express.

“This year we have had a lot more banana jobs advertised in the Tolga area and it seems to be increasing.

“The employment market is going well and there are definitely positions to fill, the vibe of Atherton is that it is getting back on its feet and it tends to

feel positive and hopeful.

“Some of the issues we face with filling some positions is the lack of transport and lack of licences that people hold.

“I believe we will continue to see positive movement forward in the next six to 12 months as the area gets back on its feet.”

PROMISINGLY local business is another sector that is indicating positive trends. Slowly but surely new businesses around Atherton and its surrounds are starting to pop up which can only be a positive for the long term of the region.

“We have seen several new businesses open in the past few weeks,” Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce president Bree Hargreaves told The

Express.

“Confidence is rising, and local businesses in and around Atherton are doing well to adapt to changes brought about by COVID, some doing better than ever.

“We welcome the employment grants and subsidised training available to entice people to expand their employment opportunities.

“The positions vacant list for

the Tablelands is long and varied, but rental housing availability is a hinderance on long term and new residents.

“The Atherton Chamber of Commerce would like to hear from any businesses with any concerns or suggestions on what would help their industry.

“We are a volunteer-based organisation that works to help promote and advocate for small business.”

Atherton has enjoyed a real estate boom in recent times with for sale properties in hot demand.

AS odd as it seems the local property market has experienced somewhat of a boom in recent times, all in the wake of a global pandemic. As The Express discovered it’s never been a better time to be a property owner.

“Prices have shown an upward trend in the last nine months (in Atherton) with vendors not having to negotiate on their asking price as heavily as

they previously had to,” Collette Rowston from Atherton Realty explained.

“We are seeing properties that have been sitting on the market for years without any interest suddenly being sold.

There are buyers in the market, however new listings are very scarce with all agents reporting the same problem.”

Despite this being able to buy property is proving quite realistic.

“Purchasing property in Atherton is very affordable compared to the city,” Ms Row-

ton as a progressive town. It has a unique, wonderful lifestyle, great natural resources and excellent tourist attractions.

“There is no doubt Atherton will continue to strive and prosper but we cannot sustain that growth if we don’t have that reliable water source.”

Councillor viewpoint LASTLY, Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) continues to look ahead to ensure the long-term future of Atherton and its satellite towns.

As it stands there are several current developments happening around town including the John Cole building, Hospital redevelopment, Mulungu Health Centre and residential builds.

“We are currently finalising our capital

budget for adoption in June and there will be major projects for the Atherton area,” TRC Councillor Peter Hodge said.

“As a Council we’re focusing a lot of our time and effort on our strategic infrastructure planning and you are going to see some exciting improvements over the coming years.

“There are some big things to come for our community.”

Lime growers say ‘no’ to overseas produce importation FNQ Lime Growers will take a stand later this month in protest of the growing likelihood that the Australian Government will approve the importation of limes from Mexico.

Mexico is the biggest grower and exporter of limes in the world and FNQ lime growers insist the potential importation of the overseas produce will provide zero benefit to the Tablelands economy, environment or local farmers.

The Lime Growers will meet at Mareeba Leagues Club on May 19 from 9am to discuss their action plan following the untimely developments.

“How can you make a difference? Leave any imported produce right on the supermarket shelves,” the Lime Growers said in an online statement.

“Do not buy it. Tell your friends and family not to buy it and become an advocate for our local farmers.”

ATHERTON and Malanda high school students studying Japanese on the Atherton Tablelands have been given a wonderful opportunity to experience that’s country’s culture and language without having to leave the Far North.

Crane Dance, a local provider of bridging services between Japan and the Tablelands will host a Japanese language immersion camp in the com-

ing days for 40 year eight, nine and ten students from the two schools at the Genazzano Retreat and Conference Centre.

“COVID’s impact on International travel and cultural exchange meant local students have been denied the opportunity to visit Japan,” Crane Dance principal Junko Marti said.

“After being approached

by Malanda State High School Japanese teacher Inge Arnold we put a program together right

here to meet the need.”

Ms Arnold said she is excited by the developments.

“It’s so exciting to have this opportunity for my students at this difficult time. Last year our planned school trip to Japan was cancelled due to COVID so it is wonderful that Japan is coming to us,” a delighted Ms Arnold told The Express.

The overnight Japanese experience will include traditional games and crafts, kimono wearing, a tea ceremony, traditional

sweets and cooking.

There will also be a demonstration of Japanese horseback archery and opportunities for students to extend their Japanese language skills.

Ms Marti said students will be inspired by the range of “cultural activities and exposure to the rich Japanese flavour we have right here on the Tablelands”.

Another similar camp is scheduled for November.

Knuth adamant region needs new Kuranda Bypass road

Hill Member Shane Knuth believes the Kuranda Bypass Road should be built as a matter of priority.

You won’t find many people more passionate about the Atherton Tablelands and its surrounds than Member for Hill, Shane Knuth. For 17 years Mr Knuth has tirelessly advocated for his rural and regional constituents. Express journalist Michael Warren sat down with the State MP to ask him some pressing questions about his electorate.

Shane, the Coronavirus vaccine rollout… when can we expect to see it properly rolled out across The Tablelands?

In short that’s still hard to tell.

On one hand there’s a notion the vaccine needs to be rolled out as quickly as possible, on the other there’s some people who are wary of adverse reactions from having it. I’d like to say more but we’re being more so guided on this by the Federal Government.

The most talked about issue this year besides the impacts of Coronavirus has been the ongoing push for the construction of the Kuranda Bypass road… what you are doing personally to make this a reality for the constituents in your electorate?

A simple solution to relieve the constant traffic flow on the Kuranda Range Road and to provide direct and fast access from Mareeba to Cairns is the construction of the Kuranda Bypass road.

We’ve already tabled a petition calling for this to be taken very, very seriously by Government. We’ve also had a number of meetings with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey MP in pursuance of this project.

We also need the Federal Government to come on board.

We do acknowledge the Federal Government has indicated they’re prepared to look at it if indeed the State Government is prepared to fund their part.

Is this a pipe dream though Shane? as you have indicated locals have waited decades for this road to be built, what makes this a serious possibility now?

This is no pipedream; this is the real deal. Obviously it would take 40 minutes off the regular commute between Cairns and the wider Tablelands.

More broadly it would provide faster access to our ports across the Tablelands, and greater access to the Gulf of Carpentaria.

It would also encourage more investment in these regions; the greatest detriment we have is we can’t get sizeable road trains down the Kuranda Range and by having access to road trains it would provide greater export certainty and also increased business and progress.

The issue and impact of juvenile crime around the Tablelands won’t go away. I know you have a steadfast belief there is a very simple solution to this. What is it?

At the moment there are three options; the first is to release

them upon arrest and immediately see them back on the streets committing the same crimes.

The second is to lock juveniles up, however there’s a lot of evidence to suggest they then exit jail more of a professional criminal than what they were before entering.

Lastly the feedback we’ve received over the years is that relocation sentencing is the ideal solution. It gives judges a third option. The theory is you send offenders to remote locations, teach them values, teach them respect, put them to work and introduce programs that have proven to work in the past.

This immediately banishes them from the community. Upon time in isolation, it gives them the best chance to return with a new outlook and a reduced want to commit crimes.

The bi-annual Field Days is an event that galvanizes and brings together so many people around the region. You must be looking forward to it?

It’s an event that unites a lot of people and gets the community involved. It’s a brilliant promotion for the area. A lot of people walk away with great deals and bargains. It’s one of those events you pencil in at the start of the year and look forward to it as it gets closer.

The Herberton Cemetery is a memorial to miners who came from all over the world seeking their fortunes. The Reflection Park is a beautiful space that honours Cannon Arthur Ernest White, who is credited by some as initiating the Anzac Day dawn service tradition in Western Australia in 1929.

Chamber loses leading light

BY SALLY TURLEY A COUPLE of weeks ago, one of the Tablelands best know identities, Christine Doan, announced that after years of involvement in the local business centre, she was stepping down from her role in the Atherton Chamber of Commerce.

Illness in the form of a six year battle with Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) was a significant contributing factor underlying Ms Doan's decision.

ME is a disabling and complex illness which can make it impossible for sufferers to do their usual activities and can confine them to bed with an overwhelming fatigue that is not improved by rest. After trying every form of available treatment with little improvement, Christine said her static-filled body and brain needed complete rest.

Christine Doan has been called a visionary, an entrepeneur, an environmentalist and a champion of life's most important causes, but in her own words, Christine Doan said she has simply had the gift of being able to sometimes “see around corners” throughout her life.

Christine is a woman who has been intuitive enough to live by her gut and confident enough to follow her heart, which she said led her to Australia. The daughter of wealthy but emotionally cool parents, Christine was a passionate child stifled by her domestic environment Born in 1949 in Michigan, America, Ms Doan developed an early fascination with the beauty of dressage horses and how to both make a horse perform and make it happy. This unmet desire was eventually cultivated in Australia.

After a five month stint hitchhiking around New Zealand in

1970, a time she describes as “delightful,” Ms Doan suddenly knew she needed to come to Australia.

She still remembers the mystical feeling of landing in Sydney saying “as soon as I put my foot on Sydney concrete, I felt ‘I belong here’ and though I continued to travel around the world, Australia became my home base.”

Linking up with a couple of Canadian travellers, they headed north over 100's of kilometres of dirt road, with virtually no roadsigns and at some point, someone told her she should go to the Tablelands.

Coming over the top of the Gillies and seeing the undeveloped magnificence of the Atherton Tableland was another life-changing moment for Ms Doan. She took one look at “this beautiful, mystical place and fell in instant love,” buying her first property, a 140 acre farm in the Lake Barrine area.

Deciding she needed to explore Australia, she bought a bicycle and got as far as Bingil Bay where she fell in love with a French speaking Belgian. By the time she learned his language, she realised they had nothing to say to each other anyway and headed back to her farm.

It was at this point she decided to buy her first Australian horses and her hunger for dressage reignited. Germany was mecca in the dressage world in the 1970's and anyone who wanted to be the best gravitated there.

Though she was vilified for deciding to train abroad, Ms Doan is sure she would never have been the only Australian representing the country in dressage in the Barcelona Olympics without learning the basics in Germany.

She maintains to this day that she was “not very talented, but

just worked hard” and laughs about her coach's comment “If you weren't so smart Christine, not even I could get you to the Olympics.”

Having achieved recognition as one of the world's best in her sport of choice, Ms Doan, although far from satisfied with her olympic experience, was now ready to turn her impressive talents and drive to matters closer to home.

She joined forces with the local business community, and began coordinating cutting edge workshops complete with world class instructors to ignite the passions of aspiring business people. But years later, Ms Doan is questioning whether she was not in fact doing attendees a kind of disservice.

“Those Start Up Weekends forced members to sprint and sprint, it made them think they could have their own business and their own life in an environment where 3/4, (now 90%) of new businesses were failing. We were promising them something that for most was not achievable.”

But she was proud of Tracy Beikoff's Rescue Swag success story. Tracy created a first Aid Kit containing a sling, a splint, a compression device and a water carrier, that went on to attract investment after being chosen on

the entrepreneurial-themed reality show, Shark Tank, at a Proto Start up Weekend in 2012.

“We were ahead of just about everyone back in 2016, running what turned out to be Start Up Weekends before anyone ever heard of them. We had the man who ran the world's first Crowd Funding program and business leaders who normally worked with Silicone Valley companies, presenting to people from local firms,” Ms Doan said.

“We brought business people together with the Tablelands Regional Council Planning Department to talk to each other openly about perceived barriers and to consolidate community development through improved communication.”

Ms Doan particularly enjoyed her time working in the Malanda Chamber of Commerce as she found Malanda a very cohesive town whose Chamber often had more members than Atherton’s. She said the community there got behind projects and pulled together to get things done.

Predisposed to the continuation of her family's culture of fairness, education and social justice, donating land for the creation of an old people's home on the edge of Malanda seemed not only the right thing to do, but necessary for the town's future.

“The decline of the dairy industry was causing significant job losses at the milk factory and without Ozcare becoming a major employer in the town and providing a destination for geriatric care, including dementia patients, Malanda would have dwindled,” Ms Doan said.

“Similarly, lobbying to keep Malanda High School open when declining numbers threatened closure and the revitalisation of the Atherton hospital to stop the exodus of people moving somewhere that had emergency services and geriatric care, was the kind of thing that needed to be done. Minimal lobbying is now done by the business community via the Chamber,” she lamented.

Her 10 years plus as part of the Chamber's executive taught Christine Doan how much leadership mattered.

“In the past, leadership came from individuals, but I believe our future leaders will be teams and if the Tablelands is going to thrive, it will need a group of leaders, trained in the skill of collaboration,” she said.

The demise of volunteering is one of Ms Doan's biggest concerns.

“Volunteer projects often have similar compliance requirements as would be expected in a large company. It has

become harder for people to find rewards commensurate to the amount of work they have to put in,” said Ms Doan.

“Everyone is so busy and we can't allow our best to burn themselves out. Sadly the drop in volunteering has been linked to an increase in mental health problems. We use to depend on our neighbours, but most people now depend on the government for help.”

Ms Doan’s enduring mission has been to help create a Tablelands which thrives economically without sacrificing its exquisite environment and cohesive communities. Her own health issues have led Christine to turn her interest to people's mental health and wellness.

She is currently a member of the Australian Steering Committee for Transformative Technology and is trialling a bio-resonance 'wellness device' which realigns and harmonises the body's frequency and is “smarter than I am about what I need.”

Christine Doan is still passionate about horses, about the area she lives in, about helping people and about improving their quality of life.

She still has way more ideas than she could ever implement and is proud to call herself an Australian and a Tablelander.

Public information meeting called for the Kuranda Range Bypass Road MEMBERS of the Kuranda Range Bypass Road committee have inspected the proposed corridor for the new road which heads east off the Kennedy Highway just past the Davies Creek bridge and finishes up 18 kilometres away in Redlynch Valley.

As a result the committee will be organising a public meeting in on June 1 at Mareeba Turf Club from 7pm.

At a recent general meeting committee spokesman Ron Reddicliffe said the new road would pick up the existing

Clohesy River Road approximately 10kms east of the Kennedy Highway.

“The Clohesy River Road follows a major ridge line towards Redlynch Valley and is in good shape especially after a lot of recent rain,” Mr Reddicliffe said.

“There is ample room to build a four-lane carriageway right to Crystal Cascades Road including a railway line which would start at the Freshwater rail loop coming back up the hill, crossing the Kennedy Highway and back to the track

In a group discussion with Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch 18 months ago, Mr Reddicliffe said he was told the Federal Government would fund the bypass, being an extension of Highway 1, provided the State Government would release the required land for a corridor.

Committee chairman Ken Harley said construction of the new road would be a “contractor’s dream” as there was no privately held land along the route, no other road intersec-

tions and no need for traffic control which can consume up to 30% of a road construction budget.

“It is all state-owned land, with a lot of open forest that has been logged many times in the past and should sit well with environmentalists because it will take a large volume of traffic off the Kuranda Range,” Mr Harley said.

“It would also remove the threat of cassowaries and other wildlife being hit by one of the 9000 traffic movements on the range every day.

“Engineers have told us the Barron River Bridge is past its use-by date and the cost of a new bridge simply is not feasible when compared to the estimated cost of the bypass road.

“The TMR could repair the bridge to a state suitable for tourism and would keep Kuranda going as a destination and be part of a pleasant tourist drive.”

The committee had been in touch with Cairns Regional Council and would invite Mareeba and Cook Shire Councils to attend as well.

Far North Queenslanders set to benefit from reinsurance pool NORTHERN Australian residents would be offered more affordable and accessible home and business insurance thanks to the establishment of a reinsurance pool by the Morrison Government.

The reinsurance pool would cover cyclone and related flood damage in northern Australia from 1 July 2022, and would be backed by a $10 billion government guarantee.

This would reduce insurance premiums across Northern Australia by over $1.5 billion for households, strata

and small businesses over 10 years.

More than 500,000 residential, strata and small business property insurance policies in Northern Australia are expected to be eligible to be covered by the reinsurance pool.

The Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the plan shows the Government is listening to Australians who live in the North of the country.

“We believe in the future of Northern Australia. This means we need to take further action to boost the resilience

for Australians to live and work in northern Australia,” the Prime Minister said.

“I’ve listened to our local MPs and senators, I’ve sat down with residents and discussed the issue. Homeowners and businesses have been faced with crippling insurance costs, and in some cases, can’t get insurance at all. It’s not ok, and we’re going to change that.

“Our plan will give more Australians in cyclone-prone areas access to affordable insurance.”

Balance put to the ultimate test in bobcat stunt show

A MAREEBA heavy machinery operator will attempt to defy gravity in a first-time stunt show at the Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Rex Petersen started performing stunts with skid-steer loaders, commonly known as a Bobcats, about 20 years ago and is now ready to bring his skills back to the main stage.

Mr Petersen has been working on some new tricks that are sure to impress crowds, some of which will include a ball and a beer.

Shows will be held in the arena at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds on May 26, 27 and 28.

The first show will be part of the Official Celebration on Wednesday 1pm in the Arena, which will see a Agriculture Parade for the first time also. All are Welcome!

Mr Petersen said he was looking forward to putting on a great show and encouraged visitors to not miss out.

“Back in the early 2000s I used to do all the stunt stuff at the supercross at Mareeba Rodeo Grounds, so that’s where it started because they needed machinery there to work on the track,” he said.

“We used to have a couple skid-steer loaders working on the track and then I was putting on a little show in the half time break of mainly balance, that’s what most of it is. Balancing a machine on two little tiny wheels, it’s holding it on the point of balance.

“Not many people have ever seen a machine on the point of balance, it’s only the odd few that can do it.

“By the time you spend 15 minutes in there on two wheels, it’s a workout.”

Mr Petersen said he had been out practising tricks with his vintage skid-steer loader in preparation for the big event.

“The newer machines are too

safety conscious so you can’t do these tricks with them, so I’ve had to borrow back one of my old ones and we’re going to give it a coat of paint and make it look all pretty,” he said.

“Then I’ll do some practise of the tricks in my backyard ready for the Field Days.

“Let’s hope it’s going to be exciting, I want it to be.”

When Mr Petersen isn’t showing off his stunt skills, the arena will also be home to Working Machinery displays over the three days.

For the first time at the Rotary FNQ Field Days people will also have the chance to see a range of machines working in action.

Residents of the Far North will have access to state of the art life-saving medical services with the launch of a new mobile medical clinic.

A custom-built mobile medical clinic will be servicing towns stretching from Mackay to the Cape York Peninsula with lifesaving equipment on board.

Heart of Australia’s new truck, dubbed HEART 4, will see specialists from all over the country unite to give residents in Sarina, Proserpine, Ayr, and Cooktown access to cardiology, sonography, cardiac monitor-

ing, sleep diagnostics and respiratory services.

Federal Minister for Regional Health, Mark Coulton said the Government’s support represents a significant boost to Heart of Australia, ensuring it continues to provide highquality healthcare to some of the nation’s most isolated communities.

“Bringing specialist servic-

es to the rural and remote areas means improving access for Queenslanders in these communities, many of whom face significant distances to get the health care they need,” Minister Coulton said.

“I am excited to see HEART 4 hit the road, and I’m sure the Northern communities to which its headed look forward to it arriving in their town soon.”

Carers needed for assistance dogs THE Association of Australian Assistance Dogs (ASDOGS) North Queensland is looking for people to take in and train puppies into full-fledged assistance dogs.

ASDOGS NQ is a volunteer run organisation that trains assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities to help them with everyday tasks.

This includes but is not limited to picking up items off the floor, fetching things and even turning on certain lights.

These dogs are trained by carers under the eye of an accredited trainer at the facility here in Mareeba, these carers take in the dogs for training after answering a questionnaire and a face-to-face interview.

Helen Holt has been a trainer and carer for ASDOGS NQ for 14 years and trained several dogs that have gone to homes.

“It’s very satisfying and rewarding but you know the dog doesn’t belong to you, it is being trained to help someone else,” she said.

“They need it more than you do.”

Due to the training facility being in Mareeba, residents who wish to apply will need to be able to travel to the facility once a week for training.

Do not mistake becoming a carer with getting a new dog however, these dogs need to be trained so that they can help our elderly and physically impaired population and prevent injuries.

Tablelands local Bridgette Godfrey has taken a step further in her bodybuilding career after coming first in the recent World Beauty Fitness and Fashion competition.

BY RHYS THOMAS AFTER starting just four years ago Bridgette Godfrey has achieved her goal of becoming a professional bodybuilder, winning her first World Beauty Fitness and Fashion (WBFF) competition.

The Tablelands local started her sporting career in school where she took part in running, athletics, touch football and other activities.

Bridgette then moved to the Gold Coast in 2018 where she observed bodybuilders at her local gym while training for a marathon.

It was then she decided to swap the treadmill for some weights and her journey to become a professional bodybuilder began.

“I started lifting weights and I did my first show 15 weeks later so not long at all,” she said.

“I came fifth in my first show, I was super tiny I hadn’t been lifting weights for long.

“It built from there and I had a full year of training then I came back and competed again coming second in my second show.”

After an extended time in training due to COVID Bridgette returned this year and ended

up winning her third official show as a bikini diva model, giving her a pro card.

Now with a pro card under her belt Bridgette is eyeing off the WBFF Australia PRO/AM in October, competing as a professional for the first time.

“I cannot wait, it’s going to be a bit scary because the competition and the lineup is going to be a lot harder,” Bridgette said.

“After I done my first show I really found a love for competing.

“Although it’s a competition I like to focus on me and my improvements.”

Dogs around FNQ have had an increasing amount of separation anxiety after COVID.

Paw anxiety TABLELAND families have been reminded to keep an eye on their fur babies after a recent survey by Royal Canin has found that 52% of dogs have experienced separation anxiety with their humans returning to social norms.

Common signs of separation anxiety from dogs include minor barking, whimpering, howling when being left alone, to more extremes

such as ripping up furniture and becoming aggressive.

Graham Lauridsen, Director from Ready Vet in Atherton, said that there are many ways to treat dogs suffering from separation anxiety.

“Usually what we do is consult the owner and the animals to see if there are any other problems such as blindness and deafness and then find the reason for its separa-

tion anxiety,” he said.

“We don’t like to prescribe medication straight away, instead we teach the owners to train their dogs to handle not having them around so often.

“Usually the indoor dogs have larger separation anxiety because they have a closer bond to their human, but that doesn’t rule out that big outdoor dogs don’t either.”

ATHERTON saw a flock of beautiful fashions on the field last Saturday with the Atherton Show Society hosting the annual chamber sub-finals of the Show Girl and Rural Ambassador High Tea. The annual event saw the Atherton Chamber taking on the responsibility of hosting this year, with two local ladies making the top three in the competition.

represented Cairns, Emily Bensilum from Atherton and Shelby Naughton from Ingham took out the competition and will be heading to the next round.

Ms Naughtion took out the overall Ambassador winner for the Sub Chamber, Ms Bensilum taking out Show Girl Runner Up and Ms Schofiel taking out Show Girl Winner.

Event Coordinator Kylie Lang said that the whole show was incredible to watch.

“It was fantastic watching each girl that participated,” she said.

“I am very proud of the girls that represented our chamber.

“The Atherton Chamber will hopefully host next year's Show Girl and Rural Ambassador High Tea again next year.”

The three girls will be making their ways to Brisbane this year to compete in the finals at the Royal Queensland Show (EKKA) from August 7-15, 2021.

As part of the day the young students also got a tour inside a Police car and afterwards students presented the officers with a colour-in of a Police car.

Charity celebrates World Moyamoya day

HIGHLIGHTS abounded at the inaugural Moyamoya Blue Tie Ball, held at the Pullman Reef Casino in Cairns on Saturday night. The big blue brain, under construction these last months, was launched complete with the eruption of a human-sized blue pigeon from the top of its skull, making for a very visible duo.

Moyamoya Australia's leader, Nicola Baker (pictured) was thrilled to announce she was now able to offer eight grants of $300 to newly diagnosed patients or sufferers in the acute stages of the disease who were struggling financially. She said their group's work was about “putting money back in pockets of families needing to pay taxi fares and other unexpected costs.”

Australia's leading figure in the disease, Sydney neurosurgeon, Professor Marcus Stoodley, who saved Nicola's son Jed's life several years ago, decided to travel to Cairns and speak at the ball, which sold out twice over, at his own expense.

He was stunned to be on the receiving end of a $10,000 donation to Macquarie University Neurosciences department from Moyamoya Australia, to fund further research into the disease. The money has been raised by the charity over the last 10 months during events such as the Smokey Blue Rally and the Great Blue Pigeon Race.

Ms Baker also chose the ball as the platform for the release of Moyamoya Australia's new promotional video. Crafted and generously donated by Uli Lenitschek, Director of the new video/film production company “Video Experience.”

The locally filmed and produced video valued at $3,000, was shown on the night, it will soon be uploaded to their Facebook page and will form part of speeches made by the charity in the future. Ms Lenitschek also donated an Epic homepage video to the same value and it was auctioned on the night.

As if all that wasn't enough, Jed Baker was reunited with an old friend on the night. When Jed was having his first round of

treatment in Sydney, at the age of 14, he became friends with Taliah, a fellow sufferer from Darwin. She has since moved to Cairns and they were able to catch up at the ball.

Recent successes have added a new level of momentum to the group's campaign for recognition of World Moyamoya Day in Australia on May 6 to celebrate the survival of sufferers of this rare disease. Ms Baker has been campaigning to have this disease of the brain included on the Australian calendar.

With the help of Bob Katter MP, Ms Baker has contacted the Assistant Minister for Finance, Charities and Electoral Matters, the Hon Zed Seselja and Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Ben Morton MP, in an attempt to further her cause.

She has been told however that these sort of events generally evolve without government involvement and that she should contact the Governor-General and request a proclamation of a National Day of Observance.

Her response - “Look out GG, I'll be in touch.”

“Moyamoya patients and their families have been helping to actively promote awareness of the disease on May 6. We had several parties participating in 'Blue for Moyamoya day' last Thursday, and we even had a local council in Wodonga light up their old water tower blue to mark the occasion,” Ms Baker said.

Nicola Baker's son Jed had his first stroke at 11 months of age and Ms Baker established the charity to raise awareness of this rare illness and to give support to those who are suffering from it.

“When Jed was finally diagnosed, after years of not knowing why he was so unwell, there was very little information or support available to help us understand the disease,” but as awareness grows, Nicola said neurosurgeons have begun putting newly diagnosed patients in contact with Moyamoya Australia for information and support.

friends. They look out for each other and share the good and the bad times.

Moyamoya's next event will be the screening of 'Kiss the Ground' in the Majestic Theatre, Malanda on Saturday May 22nd.

The movie, narrated by Woody Harrelson, is a documentary designed to raise awareness about regenerative farming.

A panel of local regenerative farmers will be present after the

Mr Waters has spent his later artistic years travelling around Australia delivering workshops to people of all ages and artistic levels, coaching them on art and life.

Atherton is a favourite stop for him and this time he will be hosting a four-day workshop over May 21 to 24 preceded by a special charity painting at Carinya on May 20.

“I love doing this (the workshops) because it’s bringing the art out into the rural areas,” Mr Waters said.

“I tailor the workshops to everyone but because I work with the individual and I develop the individual I can direct them on their own path.

“I don’t go up there and teach people to paint like me, what I do is develop them as an individual and that’s the most important thing.”

Before sitting down for the workshops Mr Waters will be visiting Carinya Home for the Aged in Atherton for a special painting demonstration after which, the painting will be donated to a charity.

ENTERTAINMENT Malanda Show ready to go The family orientated agricultural show from June 25-27 this year is set to thrill and entertain with plenty on offer for everybody over the three days. The show will be held across the first weekend of school holidays with animal competitions and displays, including dairy and beef cattle, plus crafts and of course show favourite, sideshow alley will keep kids of all ages entertained during the show.

WITH 2021 show festivities due to commence in June this year, the hype, excitement and planning is well underway for the Malanda Show.

The main event, the threeday show, will this year take place on June 25, 26 and 27, the first weekend of the school holidays perfect timing for families from afar to plan a trip to the Atherton Tablelands.

It promises to be an event not to be miss, jam packed full of fun and merriment, including the animal competitions and displays (dairy and beef cattle, goats, horses, poultry and gorgeous animal nursery), pavilion full of culinary treats and craft and, of course, side show alley.

Kicking off the weekend on the Friday evening will be the ever-popular Ergon Energy Street parade, the street procession is always a definite highlight of the Malanda Show.

Sunday provides an opportunity to see the inner farmer in you shine with the Farmer’s Challenge, as well as the Grand Parade and the Celebrity Hand Milking Competition.

The bar area will be rocking with Jacynta Lee Glaspy on Friday evening and Careless on Saturday night both until late.

Indigenous education bursaries program launched INDIGENOUS students can be part of a new bursary program in the Wet Tropics region to help with their studies and future employment opportunities.

Terrain NRM has launched the Natural Capital Fund Indigenous Education Bursary Program.

Natural Capital Fund director and Terrain NRM Board’s first ‘Emerging Leader’ Rhiannon Simcocks said the fund wanted to encourage more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to become future leaders in natural resource management.

Students in the fields of natural resource management, environment, sustainable development, agriculture and conservation

are eligible for the fund’s $3000 bursaries.

“It’s incredibly important for us to recognise the connection between young indigenous people and Country,’’ Ms Simcocks said. “We are hoping this new program will help to support Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders who want to further their studies for careers in natural resource management and advancements in collaborative management of the land and sea.”

Terrain NRM Board member and Djabugay traditional owner Barry Hunter said it was heartening to see more indigenous people caring for Country in the Wet Tropics region, and also

guiding cultural land and sea management.

“We are seeing growth in land, fire and cultural heritage management roles,’’ he said.

“We are also seeing growth in indigenous-led research. Having more young Aboriginal people engaged in the Wet Tropics region is crucial.”

Ms Simcocks said long-term goals of the program included an alumnus of bursary holders.

“There is a huge amount to be learned from young indigenous people, and from younger voices as a whole,’’ she said. “I was lucky enough to be Terrain NRM Board’s first ‘Emerging Leader’, an opportunity that included a 12-month mentorship

Queensland’s new regulated electricity prices fail to help irrigators THE Queensland Competition Authority’s draft determination on regulated electricity prices falls short in providing any real direction for irrigators, the region’s leading horticulture group says.

FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said water was paramount for irrigation but just

as important was the supply of electricity at a fair and equitable price for producers, to facilitate its delivery.

He said the draft determination delivered in March and to apply for 2021-22, saw a reduction in tariffs for all customers.

“However, the reduction

for small and large business customers was only marginal,” Mr Moro said.

“Equitable and sustainable pricing needs to be provided if our irrigators are to remain viable.

“In particular, horticultural growers need a more flexible tariff structure as they require

electricity for their businesses at volumes that are season dependent.”

FNQ Growers backed calls

by Queensland’s untied voice on intensive and irrigated agriculture, Queensland Farmers Federation, who renewed calls for the adoption of increasing the small customer threshold

to 160MWh, transparency of calculation and preemptive communication of proposed changes to ensure the long-term sustainability of the state’s agricultural sector.

“The cost of energy and water continues to rise to unsustainable levels,” Mr Moro said.

“Producers are price takers, not price makers – and without access to fair and equitable inputs, critical to productivity and sustainability, irrigated agriculture is at risk.”

The final determination is expected to be published by 11 June 2021, with prices to apply from 1 July 2021.

What is Pilates I hear you ask? It is a strength and rehab system developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s to assist ballet dancers to strengthen and recover from injury. The use of Reformers engages the body on many levels.

The benefits compared to other forms of exercise are it encourages the body and mind connection. Often we see a disconnect of our movement patterns to what our body should do that this in itself can result as a cause of injury. Pilates reconnects the mind and the body and one’s awareness of its movement becomes much clearer over time.

There is an increase in mobility and balance. Pilates on a Reformer helps to increase the range of our joints by strengthening and stretching the structures around our body. There is an increase in strength of both our global and local muscle systems.

The significant difference is the muscles are lengthened and strengthened and allows for a freer range of movement.

This improved localised muscle system results in Improved Posture. It is improved as we become more in touch with our body and we see participants walking taller and easier the more Pilates training they do.

These effects combined help prevent injuries. One of my favourite things about Pilates is that it is an excellent training system that allows you to go and do other things. It strengthens your core, overall body tone which can then be translated into golf, shooting, tennis, any sport you like.

Pilates classes are at various times of the day and more classes are added as demand increases, small class sizes led by physiotherapists ensure both proper form and technique, safety and your individual needs are taken into consideration.

But then he blows it all by blaming Australia’s woes on the UN and then spouts off the completely ridiculous idea of leaving the UN.

Yes, the UN is a bumbling, stumbling bureaucracy, but without any real legal powers to tell a nation state what to do. It is, however, the premier global communication forum for nations, for peace, and without it and the UN security council, the planet would be much worse off.

Maybe if our local man – Peter – got out more he would understand our 590-million-dollar debt and other assorted self-inflicted wounds have nothing to do with the generally lefty UN and everything to do with neoliberalism, yet another unhinged right-wing disaster.

UPDATE with the Historical Society of Mareeba HOW great to have been able to attend our Anzac Day commemorations this year! I am sure each and everyone put their heart and soul into attending. Some streets continued the practice of a drive-way dedication, another way of commemorating Anzac Day and showing respect. May it continue!

Meanwhile at our Rooms in Centenary Park, all data base work is coming on well, with member Syd enjoying the task of scanning and collating numerous Council records.

All these will of course be available for others to research once the collating has been completed.

We have assisted many local businesses, schools, historians, university students

etc in their endeavours to further their studies.

As always we are looking for others to assist in this very valuable work of preserving and conserving the history of Mareeba Shire, so if you have a spare hour or two we will be most happy to talk to you about this. The work is not difficult and learning new skills if necessary and remembering old ones, keeps our little grey cells in good working order. ► 350g frozen blackberries (gently rinsed) ► 1/2 cup white sugar ► 1 tablespoon cornflour ► dash of cinnamon (optional) ► 1 pie crust ► 1/2 cup all purpose flour ► 1/4 cup brown sugar ► 1/4 cup cold firm butter

Method

1. Combine sugar, cornstarch, and cinnamon in medium bowl.

2. Stir in blackberries and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

4. Line tart pan with pie crust. Press crust against sides of pan and cut off excess. Leave a little excess around the edges to compensate for shrinkage.

5. Cut together the flour, brown sugar, and butter and set aside.

6. Remove blackberries from refrigerator and spoon into pie crust using a slotting spoon. Leave as much of the liquid as possible in the bowl.

7. Sprinkle crumble topping onto blackberries.

8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until topping is golden brown.

9. Enjoy!!!

BMX series lands in Atherton

Racers from across the region got the chance to learn from the best of the best after Australian Speedway legend Robbie Farr took to the Mareeba Speedway last Thursday.

The Atherton BMX Club will be jam packed full of riders from all across the country with the upcoming Auscycling BMX QLD State Series.

BMX riders from across Queensland will descend on the Atherton BMX Club this coming weekend for the second round of the Auscycling BMX QLD State Series.

The event is part of a six round state competition seeing riders earn series points from each series event they attend.

With almost $2500 in prize money up for grabs for the Superclass Men and Women riders, Atherton BMX Club President Andrew Moses, is expecting a good turnout.

“This is the first event of this kind the club has hosted and we are certainly looking forward to

some fast and exciting racing,” he said.

“As the majority of this series is being held in the south east corner of the state, it is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the Far North and Tableland region.”

With very little BMX events being held over the past 12 months, Mr Moses said riders were very eager to race.

“We have riders as young as two right through to 50 plus and everywhere in between that are keen to race,” he said.

“We are anticipating over 200 riders to hit the track over the weekend which is awe-

some.”

Riders can expect quick and fast racing with some of the best talent across the State on display.

Mr Moses encourages anyone interested in coming to watch this event to come down to the track and take a look.

“Admission to the event is free and spectators are more than welcome to come down and check out some fantastic racing,” he said.

The series takes place over this coming Saturday and Sunday with the first day on racing starting at 2pm on Saturday.

Sprintcar legend visits local speedway RACERS from across the region got the chance of a lifetime after Australian speedway legend Robbie Farr attended the Mareeba Speedway to give personal coaching and advice to up and coming drivers.

On Thursday last week the Mareeba Speedway was alive with the sounds of roaring engines and churning dirt with a host of drivers making the trip to be apart of this special occasion.

Drivers came from Mareeba, Cairns and even Townsville for the chance to see Farr in action and maybe absorb some knowledge.

Robbie is the most decorated speedway competitor in Aus-

tralia with podium finishes in Sprintcars, Speedcars and Sedans across his career.

North Queensland Sprintcar President and Coordinator of the event Wesley Jenkins said Mareeba Speedway was picked to host the clinic due to the condition of the track.

“Mareeba is a great track, its fast, I think it’s just about one of the best tracks in Australia at the moment,” he said.

“It was one-on-one coaching by one of the best drivers in Australia for all our local drivers up here.

“People learned complete race craft, from setting up the car to how we drive it and why

we drive it that way.

President of the Mareeba Speedway Zack Howell said that the turnout for the workshop met expectations and the feedback he receives was good.

“There were a lot of new drivers who have come into the sport and they wanted to learn how to use the cars and Robbie is one of the best guys in Australia to explain how to get the car around the track,” he said.

“His knowledge gives them a six-month head start into the sport.

“The drivers thought it was outstanding they learnt so much.”

Record breaking rodeo and races at Garnet Bradley Riley gets collected by pickup man, Lamar Cox after doing time in the Bareback.

BY SALLY TURLEY RACING and rodeo enthusiasts were treated to three days of spectacular weather and entertainment over the May Day weekend at the LD Lucey Memorial Park Grounds on the outskirts of Mt Garnet.

A record number of people flocked to the small ex-tin mining town from all over North Queensland to experience the legendary hospitality and racing and rodeo action associated for decades with the Mt Garnet Races and Rodeo.

By lunch time Saturday, the gate staff were worried about where they were going to fit everyone and were already saying they might need to cut the fences to make more room for campers.

The 4WDs and camper trailers kept rolling in though, and people just kept squashing vehicles and camping sites up tighter and tighter. But the focus was on fun over the weekend and the police and security team were very happy with the behaviour of the crowd.

With over 2700 race goers and over 3,000 people attend-

ing the rodeo, facilities were stretched to the limit. Bars at all the venues ran out of beverages, food vans were doing emergency dashes to top up food ingredients and toilets were blocking up from overuse.

But the show went on races were run and won, bulls and broncs were bucked, barrels were circled and steers were roped. Lacey Morrison of Cairns placed in 8/11 races over the two day race meet to take out the coveted Jockey of the Carnival Award.

She won Friday's feature race, the Bob Atkinson Memorial Bracelet on the Jannelle Ryan trained horse, Space Time and Graham Kliese of Townsville won Saturday's Cashmere Cup on Rocco, trained by Stephen Potiris of Innisfail.

An emotional tribute was made during Sunday's Ironbark Cattle Company annual rodeo to the event's co-founder, Bill Blakeney. Mr Blakeney, who passed away earlier this year, and good friend David Core started the Garnet rodeo and built the original arena 52 years ago.

Roger Kelly, who grew up on Glengordon Station outside of Hot Spring, built one of the first two camps at the Mt Garnet camping grounds in 1969 and except for 2006, has been to every single Mt Garnet race and rodeo weekend since. He said the building crew were starting to run out of muscle and cement during construction, so they filled the foundation with empty stubby bottles - good enough to last better than half a century apparently.

Sunday was a great time for Bareback and Saddle Bronc rodeo legends Brian Teece from Rocky Creek, Stafford Bowen of Millaa Millaa and Ronnie Finch of Townsville to catch up behind the chutes.

Bull riders Luke Smith of Mareeba, Jackson Field of Woodstock and Wyatt Milgate, Mareeba (formerly Maitland NSW), waited in the wings for their turn in the arena. Luke Smith went on to take out the Novice Bull competition.

Sue Blakeney travelled up to Mt Garnet to honour the memory of her late husband Bill with his good friend and co-founder of the rodeo in its current location 52 years ago, David Core.

In the popular new Mini Bull event, the 11-U14 category went to Townsville's Riley Schmidt, with no scores but a lot of valiant efforts being made in the 8 -U11 division.

After years of hard work the rodeo's executive committee will be stepping down at their Aug/Sep AGM and the tiny committee of 6 are inviting interested people to come forward.

A spokesperson for the rodeo committee said they were extremely grateful for the overwhelming response received when they called for volunteers from the crowd last Sunday and they needed those kind of people with energy and fresh ideas to step up and join the team.

THE Mareeba Gladiators were unable to secure a win coming back from a bye as they went down against the Innisfail Leprechauns on Saturday night at Davies Park in Mareeba.

The game was opened quickly by Mareeba with Clint Posselt diving over the line from dummy half to give Mareeba first points on the board.

Innisfail sought to answer back quickly but their attempt at a runaway try was foiled by Mareeba’s quickest legs, Trezman Banjo as he chased and brought down the Innisfail player.

This did not satisfy the young star however as he then proceeded to score a try of his own blitzing through the Innisfail defense and over the line.

Innisfail did not sit idly by however as they upped the tempo and really pushed Mareeba into a corner where they conceded their first try of the game.

Shaun Stephens stepped up after scoring a try off his own grubber kick pushing Mareeba to a healthy lead.

Innisfail did not falter and was able to score again just before the teams went into the shed for half time.

Another Innisfail try after the break set the tempo for the match as they continued to pressure Mareeba with aggressive and fast-paced football.

Three unanswered tries by Innisfail sealed the deal over Mareeba as they struggled to fight back and get men over the line, eventually going down 27-18.

Ladies win season opener THE Atherton Senior Roosters Ladies side have notched up a 22-10 win after travelling to Yarrabah and defeating the hosts in Sunday’s opening round of the 2021 Cairns District Rugby League Ladies six team tackle competition.

Six clubs, Atherton, Yarrabah, Kangaroos, Ivanhoes, Innisfail and Edmonton are represented in the ladies’ competition. Yarrabah led 10-0 early before the Roosters settled and hit back to lock the score up at 10 all for the halftime break.

The Roosters dominated the

second session with three more unanswered tries to give them a five tries to two victory.

Late in the second quarter, Devil centre Dave McGrath joined in on this inside shooting frenzy and he held form in the third.

The fourth quarter was hot, and young Peter Lipede was playing well above his market value for the Ballers, composed with the rock in hand and scuttling defensively in front of far more experienced and imposing opposing guards.

Still, it was cunning Craig Farley waiting until the curtain to challenge a gallant defence.

Due to recent weather the Mareeba Bulls went into the games a bit undercooked not being able to train properly and having several weeks off due to wet weather.

The Mens Premier side was unable to come away with the win going down 3-1, a disappointing result for coach Angelo Tatti.

“If we played the way we did in the second half in the first half it would have been a totally

different story, the second half was our half,” he said.

“The intensity was a lot higher, the work rate, the effort from the boys.

“The positive is we still came out and tried our best.”

The Ladies Premier side was able to scrape out a draw due to the man of the match performance of their goalkeeper.

The game was painfully in Edge Hills favour at the start of the match with them scoring two quick goals and putting Mareeba on the back foot.

Mareeba was able to fight back and pull a draw out of a game that could have been a lot worse.

“We were a bit underprepared and it showed in the first 30 minutes of our game so within the first 10 minutes we were down two nil,” Coach Marcello Savaglio said.

“It could have been a lot worse if it weren’t for our goalkeeper she was man of the match in everyone’s eyes, it could have been five nil after 20 minutes.

“We fought back and I’m happy to come away with a draw.”

The Bulls will now have another bye before they head down to face Innisfail on their home turf.
