BY RHYS THOMAS AFTER stepping out of the roastery and into the distillery Skybury has had three of their four new liquors win silver medals at the London Spirits

Competition.

Skybury has partnered with FNQ Spirits to concoct four different liquors using Skybury’s own products including papaya and of course, coffee.

A vodka and schnapps both

made from papaya and a coffee liquor were entered into the London Spirits Competition, a contest that rates spirits from all around the world based on their quality, value and packaging.

Skybury General Manager

Candy MacLaughlin was approached by the owner of FNQ Spirits Troy Read, looking to make a coffee liquor which then expanded into the papaya vodka and schnapps.

Ms MacLaughlin jumped on the opportunity as she saw a chance to expand the business and make use of their damaged produce.

“There is a very small percentage of our crop that gets damaged in our processing, so I thought if I could use that to create the espresso liquor then I would be value adding to our product,” she said.

“Excitingly enough by the time the London spirits competition rolled around we had the vodka and the schnapps entered as well and all three got a silver medal.

“We were always looking for new opportunities to drive brand awareness, which is what the liquors do for us, so we can get it in front of more people on a different shelf.”

Even though the products are not even a year old yet and to take out several awards, Ms Maclaughlin sees this as a huge win.

“It beat all of our expectations for a product that’s only six months old it was a fantastic win for us,” she said.

“I think it is going to assist Troy and I now to help the sales of the product, it adds weight and it gives us confidence to go to the bigger chains.”

Dan Murphy’s has agreed to stock Skybury’s and FNQ Spirits new line of products onto their shelves to sell at the end of the month.

JUST days after the raging success of the Savannah Summer Series Pool Party experienced promoter James Dein has now shifted his attention to the continued planning of the Savannah in the Round festival.

Dein met with members of the rodeo

committee to further identify and determine how to best utilise venue resources and collaborate going forward to deliver an unforgettable and memorable festival in October.

“We met a few days ago to talk to the showground executive and for a look at the site boundaries to show how Savannah in the Round will physically look, as

a festival site, this year,” Dein told The Express.

“It was the first time this year the new festival boundaries have been unveiled to the rodeo committee, so we showed them the ins and outs of how the festival will operate. “It was also an opportunity for a discussion about how much further the wonderful rodeo committee might

be able to assist in helping us deliver the event this year.”

Savannah in the Round has a longterm arrangement with Mareeba Rodeo to stage the festival at Kerribee Park with Dein confirming he is looking forward to working “closer together” than ever to deliver an amazing event in the coming months.

IT’S no surprise for those that call Far North Queensland home but a newly released national survey has confirmed that Australians want to visit and explore our sights and sounds more than anywhere else in the country.

The Great Northern Brewing survey revealed Cairns and FNQ was ranked No.1 by Australians in a recent poll that asked: Where would you most like to explore the great outdoors in Australia?

The Whitsundays, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Outback Queensland all finished behind Cairns and FNQ in the top 10 dream destinations for outdoor adventure.

“The survey results showed the tough circumstances of 2020 had inspired Australians to get out and really immerse themselves in the natural beauty Australia had to offer,” Great Northern Brewing Co spokesman Ian Giles said.

“Australians have a renewed interest in their own backyard which we hope will eventually translate to a financial lifeline to the many towns, businesses and pubs who are doing it tough.

“It’s somewhat good news for our local tourism and hospitality industry that when things are back to normal, travellers want to head to Queensland.”

Our biggest issue has been the ongoing impact COVID continues to have around our Shire.

In Mareeba the agricultural industries continue to do well and have buffered the severe impacts of COVID. In Kuranda which is totally dependent on tourism, it has been dismal.

One of the challenges for Council is to try and keep businesses and enterprises continuing in terms of economic growth in the area.

We’re constantly looking at that; the other issue is how on earth do you help an area like Kuranda which is totally 60% dependent on international tour-

ism?... that is constantly on my mind. We continue to invest in Kuranda with the hope when things all open up the unique experiences of visiting Kuranda Village will still be there.

Our water security infrastructure is another very important issue for us. It’s not just uniquely the Mareeba shire… the underground pipes around the region are 50 plus years old, so we need to upgrade them.

That is a $100m project over the next ten years.

Hopefully we’re able to spend funds from the Kuranda infrastructure grant in terms of improving one of the main streets, there, too. We continue to complete beautification works in the area in readiness of more tourists returning to Kuranda in the future.

Projects and developments New library to be completed by end of June, continued push into the solar energy renewable space and ongoing works to Railway Avenue to provide increased parking for RV visitors to Mareeba.

Economy stimulation Fast forwarding and continuation of community projects like the beautification of Byrnes St to sustain employment.

2021 magic wand “If I were given one wish for this year it would be to decrease the fear associated with the COVID pandemic.”

Presently, our main focus at Etheridge Shire is the completion of the Charleston Dam project.

Projects and developments The widening of the narrow sections of bitumen on the Gulf Development Road between Mt Surprise and Georgetown.

Economy stimulation Creating employment opportunities, utilising existing Government revenue streams.

2021 magic wand “I’d like to see a relaxation of State Government regulations around vegetation management, water pricing and land tenure.”

CARPENTARIA SHIRE COUNCIL – Mayor Jack Bawden

Broadly speaking what are the three main issues, matters or focus points that have your current attention at Carpentaria Shire Council?

One of the main issues for us now is our works program that has been slow to start because of the weather. Another is the connectivity to Karumba; there was investment in a fibre optic cable but the town still has little to no internet and 4G services.

Lastly, the future sustainability of all small Councils with little to no base rate and a remote chance of being able to operate at a profit with any types of works.

Biggest future challenges That would be having all the State and Federal funding programs and projects completed and acquitted on time.

Economy stimulation “Support locals’ policy”, using local services when possible to keep funds within our Shire and local economy.

2021 magic wand “If there was a wand to increase the 3% share of all tax collected in this country local governments would not be so reliant upon funding to provide services and liveability to our ratepayers who are taxpayers.

“And or have the two levels of government provide aged care, funeral, childcare, biosecurity services again and let local Councils get on with our core business of the liveability in our areas.”

DOUGLAS SHIRE COUNCIL – Mayor Michael Kerr

Broadly speaking what are the three main issues, matters or focus points that have your current attention at Douglas Shire Council?

The first is a focus around postCOVID recovery. With international borders closed for the foreseeable future, we need to make sure the Port Douglas and Daintree region is front of mind for domestic travellers.

The self-drive market is booming and we are in a prime position with our Great Barrier Reef Drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation and many day attractions to welcome visitors from across the country.

Local businesses reported a busy Easter period and we need to continue to capitalise on the hunger that our domestic market has for our beautiful region.

Another is our current staff shortages. Our local businesses are crying out for more staff. Over the years, backpackers have provided a year-round workforce for our hospitality and accommodation sectors, which are now struggling to attract workers, from cleaners and wait-staff to highly skilled professionals.

A special mayoral snapshot We need to keep encouraging people living outside the region who may be looking for a gap year, a working holiday, or just a change of scenery, to consider moving to Douglas Shire.

Lastly, affordable housing; developers have shown huge interest in Port Douglas over the past 18 months.

This is fantastic as we try to position Douglas Shire as a prime location for sustainable investment opportunities.

However, with this we have to improve the availability of affordable accommodation for any potential increase in local workers.

Economy stimulation Finalising an economic development strategy for the next four years that provides a blueprint for the region to leverage sensible economic drivers and diversify the economy.

The upcoming Cooktown and Cape Expo event, the opening of the Peninsular Development Road for safe travel throughout Cape York and the ongoing rollout and uptake of the COVID vaccine program are some of our main focus points at the moment.

Broadly speaking what are the three main issues, matters or focus points that have your current attention at Cassowary Coast Regional Council?

Last week I was pleased to present the draft Cassowary Coast Regional Council corporate plan to the community and Council is currently seeking community feedback on the draft plan. The new corporate plan will guide us into the future from 2021-2025 and has been developed to ensure Council delivers a sustainable future for our region.

Strategic planning is vital for driving economic recovery to ensure the range of services, infrastructure and facilities Council provides remains relevant for the community and our future needs. That ensures we are sustainable and the Cassowary Coast is a great place to be.

Our draft corporate plan seeks to strike balance which is central to our community’s desire to see the whole of the Cassowary Coast region as a place with increasing opportunities. That means being a place for residents to live and work, where the region’s assets meet the community’s needs, a place with healthier and more sustainable lifestyles and a place that has a healthy natural environment.

To develop this draft corporate plan for 2021-2025, Cassowary Coast Regional Council considered local and regional issues as identified by Councillors and the executive management team at a series of workshops and discussion forums and then explored by the Cassowary Coast consultative group.

Biggest future challenges During the next couple of months, Council will be recruiting for a new CEO. Our current CEO, James Gott is retiring.

I must say I am enormously grateful for Mr Gotts’ stewardship of the Council administration during what has been one of the most challenging times in the region’s history.

He has steered Council through the election period, the induction of the new council, provision of value in the delivery of service (including responsible financial management) and of course, guided the Council’s approach and response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To successfully navigate these challenges takes a skilled individual and Mr Gott deserves full credit and our gratitude for his hard work and dedication to this organisation.

We look forward to welcoming a new CEO who will continue the good work that is currently underway.

2021 magic wand “If I had a magic wand, my wish would be that the Cassowary Coast region is not impacted by COVID or any other disaster so that we can deliver on our new draft corporate plan goals and strategies.”

TABLELANDS REGIONAL COUNCIL – Mayor Rod Marti

Broadly speaking what are the three main issues, matters or focus points that have your current attention at Tablelands Regional Council?

The first (issue) is trying to make sense (of) our water resource/supply issue and the way forward.

So, what are the water options with the most currency for Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) in terms of both capitalising on the recreational amenity of Tinaroo (maintaining water levels that allow the full range of usage) and securing increases in both urban and agricultural water allocations for our community and agribusiness sector.

The second big issue is the importance of the Palmerston Highway to our region and its urgent need for upgrading. It is the key strategic route to both the Bruce Highway and Mourilyan Harbour, ideally suited to take produce from the Gulf, The Tablelands and the greater northern region to markets.

Thirdly, Council continues to work on reforming the organisation and we are recruiting for a new CEO to continue with the progress made thus far and set us up for a more rigorous and outcome-focussed future.

Biggest future challenges Delivering our budget is the single most important decision Councils make each year and we’re heavily into that now. The challenge is exacerbated this year because of recent land valuations that again remind us that (TRC) is home to the country’s most valuable farming land.

Council will have to be disciplined and careful in its application of rates formulas to minimise the pain for ratepayers, to the extent that we can at least.

BY RHYS THOMAS MAREEBA State High School (MSHS) students will now have an easier time getting their Ps after the school was gifted a new car as a part of their ARTIE program.

The ARTIE Academy Driver Licensing Program was developed to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids who are eligible to secure their license while still in school.

The MSHS program has taken a massive step forward

with RACQ and Former Origin Greats Players (FOGS) Queensland donating a new car to the school specifically for the ARTIE program.

MSHS Principal Scott Whybird said that this program will help students get their license while still at school.

“There will be an application program that it goes through, what we are encouraging also is that students need to have a certain amount of attendance to qualify to use the car,” he said.

“We want everyone to get

their license, but we also want everyone to come to school.

“Education is the big thing really, what we want to do is get the kids at school and learning and that is what this program does.”

Donating a car to MSHS for the ARTIE program removes the roadblocks surrounding students securing their licenses, including parents sharing one car, or having no car at all.

Head of Community and Education at RACQ David Contarini, said that unlike other

exterior programs, this program keeps the kids at school while getting their 100 hours.

“If we bring the resource into the school, they can run that vehicle using an in-house program,” he said.

“A student can then go out for an hour drive, then that student is getting their 100 hours up.

“If their vehicle is at the school there are no roadblocks anymore so we can get to those students who are having trouble getting their 100 hours up.”

BETTER TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS FOR QUEENSLAND

THE Tablelands region didn’t experience the record volumes of rainfall that Cairns and the Coast recorded just days ago but decent totals were still confirmed across many local townships and communities.

Bureau of Meteorology expert James Thompson said “no rainfall records were broken (on the Tablelands) from preliminary data, however, some sites reached their April median rainfall last week.”

Millaa Millaa led the way, recording the most rainfall across the Tablelands between Monday and Wednesday last week with 229mm followed by Malanda 184mm, Tinaroo Dam 157mm, Atherton 134mm and Mareeba 89mm.

Meanwhile, Wyanbeel Valley, situated between Cairns and

Port Douglas, experienced an astonishing 281.6mm during a 24 hour deluge last Tuesday.

Bureau of Meteorology confirmed last week’s numbers were the heaviest April rainfall for Cairns and the region in 53 years. Cairns recorded 582mm between Monday and Wednesday which was three times the monthly average for the Far North Queensland tourist town.

Cairns airport received its largest ever rainfall for an April day, with a huge 226mm downpour last Tuesday eclipsing the previous record of 185.8mm set back on April 17th, 1984.

The rainfall caused numerous roads to be closed around Far North Queensland including parts of the Gilles Highway and areas around Ingham and Innisfail.

Frogbit begone

Connecting Mareeba to Atherton via the Kennedy Highway We’re upgrading Queensland’s Kennedy Highway from Mareeba to Atherton. The project will also upgrade intersections between Martin Avenue and Willows Road and other associated road safety works and treatments to reduce accidents.

After declaring Amazon Frogbit a local pest earlier in the year Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has now followed through and got the invasive weed permanently banned in the shire.

MSC and its residents have been fighting the growing tide of Amazon Frogbit since it was discovered in local waterways in 2017.

Since then, council made an emergency declaration at their ordinary February meeting to have the weed registered as a local pest.

Now after a period of public consultation and an amendment to the local law, Frogbit has now been permanently banned in the Mareeba Shire, the decision was passed unanimously at their April meeting last week.

This means that residents cannot harbour, propagate or sell Amazon Frogbit anywhere in the shire and if caught they could face a fine.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said that getting Amazon Frogbit banned locally was only the first step.

“This is the first step because we actually want to advocate for a state-wide ban on Amazon Frogbit,” she said.

“We needed to have our part done first and that was the local law act.

“Inspite of the fact that it is a big environmental impact there is also a recreational impact to it where our young family cannot enjoy our beautiful waterways because they’re all clogged up.”

Tablelands Regional Council has followed closely behind the MSC after declaring Amazon Frogbit a local pest by emergency declaration at their meeting last Thursday.

MSC is also in talks with Cairns Regional Council to get Amazon Frogbit banned in their local government area as well.

These upgrades will improve road safety for all road users.

TRC seeks more consultation for trail network A MOVE to extend Atherton’s mountain bike network is a step closer today after Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) called for further consultation before it commits more funds to the project.

Council agreed to provide in principle support of the Tablelands Cycle Sport Inc’s request to co-fund an updated concept plan for the trail network at its latest Ordinary Meeting.

However, Council requested further consultation take place including key engagement with Queensland Parks and Wildlife s officials and representatives of

the traditional owners of the land to determine attitudes to the trail’s expansion before it commits the requested $30,000 to assist with cofunding the project.

“We’ve yet got to do the consultation with Parks and Wildlife and the traditional owners, I don’t want to jump the gun on that,” TRC Mayor Rod Marti explained to The Express.

“We must follow due process, we have to cross those bridges first and have those engagements, so that’s number one.

“What we know about the Atherton Mountain bike path,

is that it is a brilliant facility, with about 55kms of trails.

In this instance we need to do our due diligence before we approve any further funds.”

Meanwhile TRC’s Councilor Dave Clifton has praised the running of the recent Yungaburra Triathlon, labelling it “a great success”.

“The triathlon is just one of a series of signature destination marketing events that bring attention and economic benefit to our region and we look forward to a post COVID bigger and better event next year with a target competitor list of 600 people.”

Walk-in Wardrobe hits Yungaburra ORGANISERS of the inaugural Walk-In Wardrobe Yungaburra event are optimistic for the events success after growing popularity ahead of its opening on Saturday, May 8, Mother’s Day weekend.

“A group of us girls came up with the idea for this event at a weekend away last year,” said organiser Binny Henricks.

“We wanted to have an event on the Tablelands where people could get together to sell preloved clothing.

“Our stallholders have a

huge range of clothing and accessories for sale including designer, vintage, rockabilly, formal wear and children’s clothes and they’re the ones we know about.”

All 25 stalls have been sold with the money from the stallholder fees going to the Yungaburra CWA, Yungaburra Beautification Inc will also be using this event as an opportunity to fundraise for their project.

Fellow organiser Jenni Kruck said that the renew, reuse and recycle aspect was an

important concept for the event.

“From a sustainability perspective, Australians send an average 23kg of textiles to landfill per person, each year,” she said.

‘This is a huge waste and by taking part in this event, you’re helping the environment and your wallet.

“Grab your girlfriends or make it a Mother’s Day weekend and head to the Yungaburra Community Hall between 9am and 5pm on Saturday, May 8.”

A sea of yellow brightens up Tolga

BY ELLIE FINK THE small town is Tolga is blooming with tourists after eight acres of sunflowers popped up on a Tate Road farm.

Samantha Hunt and Anthony Trimarchi planted the Sunflowers on their property on February 2, which has since then expanded in size and beyond their expectations.

Ms Hunt said that their newest attraction had many goals in mind including giving back to

the people that saved her and her second child’s life.

“When I was having problems during my second pregnancy Ronald McDonald house took us in and it was the best experience, so we thought now was a time to give back,” she said.

“Every gold coin donation made from photos taken in the field go towards the Ronald McDonald Foundation and we have raised just under $500 so far.

“People have been donating more when taking their sunflow-

ers away which is incredible, and we are working with the Ronald McDonald Foundation to get more promotional material.”

Mr Trimarchi said the farm was also a way to rehabilitate after their corn crops were recently destroyed by armyworm.

“All the locals know we struggled without corn crops after dealing the armyworm and this was a way to look at more options in farming,” he said.

“The farm itself is 80 acres and we though the only thing

that could really help is sunflowers.

“It has helped get Tolga blooming after COVID pandemic with people from as far as Townsville and Port Douglas coming up,” The Tolga Sunflower farm is opened on the weekends, weather permitting, with a gold coin donation for photos and picking the flowers.

Promoter’s attention turns to main festival after successful pool party

Federal Member for Kennedy Suicide royal commission long overdue At long last we have a royal commission into veteran suicides.

I am very pleased that the Prime Minister recognised that the numbers were there in the Parliament to get it up.

I couldn’t get the public to pressure the government to do anything about it and it took us four months to get the Minister up to Townsville and God Bless him, he did this week. But since December, 26 ex-servicemen decided that it was better for them to leave this world than for them to be in it.

To have this terrible business already with the farmers, and job farmers – another one a week in that category and then there are two every three weeks in our First Australian communities.

What is wrong with our country that people are happier not to be alive than to be alive?

Cairns and the Tablelands are a big naval area so it is a big issue for us and there are answers there. When Bernie Power got the Broncos off the ground, he wanted those kids to have a future afterward. Well this is not a philosophy that exists in the army.

I was so pleased to see Dutton and Hastie go for the throat of the head of the Defence Force of Australia. This is the first step to getting something done.

BY MICHAEL WARREN VETERAN promoter James Dein says his attention has now switched to delivering an exceptional Savannah in the Round festival following the success of the lead-up two-day pool party event at Cairns Novotel.

Hundreds of festival goers from Cairns, Mareeba and around the region watched headliners Thirsty Merc, Adam Brand and others from their hotel balconies, and in and around the facility’s main pool with Dein labelling the inaugural Las

Vegas style event a “wonderful success”.

“We really couldn’t have asked for more. The festival goers seemed to have loved the concept of enjoying live music from the pool, add some great food stalls and tasty cocktails and you had the absolute most perfect two days,” he said.

“The light rainfall didn't deter patrons one bit – everyone had a wonderful time.”

Dein is not resting on his laurels though with the ever-busy promoter already back on the job and working on logistics and

planning matters for Savannah in the Round.

“We visited Mareeba a few days ago where we conducted a walk-through of the venue with stakeholders about how Kerribee Park will look as a festival site when it stages the event later in the year,” Dein said.

“We also looked at power and sound matters too, as well and chatted with the Mareeba rodeo executive about how we can work even more closely together to deliver a wonderful festival later this year.”

Local dogs to seek refuge in new home

BY MICHAEL WARREN DISPLACED local dogs in search of respite or a potential forever home will take cover under a future temporary residence when Council’s new pound and refuge is finished construction.

A condition inspection concluded Mareeba’s existing pound had reached the end of its functional use and that a more contemporary facility needed to be built.

When constructed the new building will be dual purpose and fulfill Council’s requirements for both a pound and animal refuge/kennel style facility.

“The new pound is State funded through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program and we’re very pleased we’re able to provide this facility for our Shire,” Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin explained.

“Council has been working on this project for many years and I am delighted to see the new facility come to fruition.”

Council confirmed the new building’s under-slab hydraulics, a concrete ground slab and approximately 70% of the block work were completed in March with more works to continue over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, the Cedric Davies Community Hub continues to take shape with works expected to be completed by June.

When finished the former Mareeba Bowls club site will be home to a new library, community hall, bowls clubhouse and covered bowling green.

The Queensland Government’s local Government Grants and subsidies program and works for Queensland program as well as the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Pro-

gram is funding the ambitious project.

“We’re really excited about the hub,” Mayor Toppin said.

“To have a new library for the town will be fantastic for Mareeba.”

Lastly, the issue of water security was brought to the attention of Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack just days ago when he met with Mayor Toppin in Mareeba.

“The meeting was an opportunity to state our case in terms of advocating for water security,” Mayor Toppin said.

“Mareeba Shire is a strong, confident and growing Shire however our agricultural industries are dependent on reliable access to water.

“Without the security and availability of water, our farmers cannot diversify and expand.”

Georgia and Bandit set to take on Mt Garnet New Tablelands tourism campaign to be unveiled TABLELANDS Regional Council will unveil its newly created tourism campaign later this afternoon which will be used to promote, generate publicity, raise awareness and attract new visitors to the region.

Tourism operators, business owners and community members will enjoy a presentation from creators of the Destination Marketing strategy (tourism campaign), C7EVEN, who will reveal who the strategy is tar-

geting, what the approach will be, how it will be rolled out and why the theme “touch the top” is important to the new campaign.

The event gets underway this afternoon from 5.30pm at Ravenshoe Hotel.

THIS year’s Mt Garnet Rodeo will see young barrel racer Georgia Simpson from Mareeba taking on the course.

The 16-year-old rodeo lover has been a barrel racer majority of her life with gold being the ultimate goal this year.

Georgia said that to ensure that she takes out as many wins as possible, her and her quarter horse Bandit have been training

hard.

“Bandit and I have been doing lots of muscle building and leg work to train up for Mt Garnet,” she said.

“The adrenaline rush I get from barrel racing is amazing and it makes me feel like I am on top of the world.

“My dad always rodeoed, and I always loved how the girls could control such big animals

and that was the inspiration to do what I do today.”

In the future, Georgia said that she would like to compete in the United States with some words of inspiration imprinted in her mind – The world is at your feet and if you want it bad enough, you’ll work for it.

The Mt Garnet Rodeo is on this Sunday, May 2.

Mt Garnet ready for weekend of races and rodeo THE State Government’s complete easing of restrictions around the number of people permitted at outdoor public gatherings across Queensland has opened the door for Mt Garnet Races and Rodeo to move full steam ahead with welcoming as many patrons as possible to the iconic event.

Outdoor restrictions have eased but those attending still need to follow strict protocols upon entry including answering COVID related questions and scanning in via a QR code to assist with potential contact tracing processes. The main gate will be cash only.

The Rodeo and Races is a must on the region’s social and event calender with patrons right across the region from Cairns to Mareeba and Atherton to Normanton to enjoy three days of action including race days from April 30 and May 1, and the 51st rodeo the following day.

“After the last 12 months of lock down and events cancelled everywhere, we are just so appreciative of being able to run an event for everyone to enjoy,” event secretary Kylie Rankine said.

“Organising this year's event has been a lot more stressful making sure we are complying with the COVID

rules.

“However, once we see the public streaming through the gates and all the compliments we have received from the public thanking us for all our hard work to make this year’s races and rodeo happen, it will be all worthwhile.”

Riders will compete to win the coveted open bull ride title and other key events like “All round cowboy” and “All round cowgirl”.

“I think I can speak on behalf of both clubs and say it is an annual event that brings everyone together and provides an opportunity to catch up with friends and family over the three days,” Ms Rankine said.

The three-day event unofficially kicks off tomorrow (Thursday, April 29) with a meet and greet BBQ at the Golf Club from 6pm.

On Friday, April 30 is the calcutta and five race program followed by a cabaret at night.

The Saturday will see a calcutta, six race program, fashions on the field and again a cabaret a night.

The long weekend celebrations will conclude on Sunday with early bird breakfast at 6.30am followed

by Rodeo action from 9am.

Cowboys ready to rumble THREE young bull riders are at the gates and ready for a weekend full of bull bucking action with the Mt Garnet Rodeo set for this May Day long weekend.

“It feels pretty good because we haven’t been able to do it for a while so to get back into it and get used to it will be good,” Jake said.

“It definitely feels good to go up to Garnet and get on, it’s another rodeo that all of us like,” added Travis.

Both Jake and Travis were able to get some of the rust

out with other bull rides both at home and at competitions before Garnet, Wyatt however has been injured and out of the game.

“I’ve been out for about a month so this will be my first ride back, I’m feeling pretty confident,” Wyatt said.

“I had three broken ribs, a punctured lung and I lacerated my liver as well, it was a tough

injury to go through.

“I’m very keen to get back on I’ve been waiting for a while now I’ve just been training keeping fit and healthy.”

In just a few short weeks Wyatt will be taking a big step in his bull riding career when he travels down to Rockhampton to compete in his first Professional Bull Riders (PBR) competition.

ANZAC DAY 2021 Residents across the region got up early on Sunday to pay their respects to the ANZACs that gave their lives and continue to risk their lives for the safety and prosperity of our nation. Dawn services were observed across the country where veterans gave speeches that remembered and honoured their fallen brothers in arms. Reduce your risk of car theft

RACQ is urging vehicle owners to get serious about protecting their car keys as the Club’s new research found 70 percent of Queenslanders admitted to storing their keys in easy to steal places including inside the vehicle.

The warning came after RACQ insurance claims data revealed the cairns and Townsville regions were hot spots for car theft.

RACQ spokesperson Kirsty Clinton said the Club had received more than 3,600 insurance claims for stolen cars in the past three years.

“Unfortunately, car theft is a growing problem but there are some simple things drivers can do to secure their vehicle and it all starts with your keys,” Ms Clinton said.

“As vehicle security improves, the easiest way to steal a car is to use the keys.

So, you need to treat your keys like cash. You would not leave a few thousand dollars

on a table beside the front door or on the front seat of your car, do not leave your keys there.

“Also, don’t tag your keys with identifiers like your name and especially not your address.

“Our research shows one in five drivers throw their keys on the table and another 22 percent hang them on a visible hook marked keys. This really isn’t good enough.”

Ms Clinton said drivers should also remember the basics for properly securing their vehicle when out and about.

“Wherever possible, try to park in a secure car park. If that is not available, choose somewhere well-lit and wellpopulated to reduce the temptation for opportunistic thieves,” she said.

“Make sure, whenever you leave your vehicle, your windows are up, doors are locked and don’t leave valuables visible in the car.”

Petrol prices hit year high in Queensland FILLING up the tank in Queensland was more costly last month compared to March as new data from RACQ revealed the average price of petrol and diesel increased across the State.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the Club’s April Fuel Report showed the average price of unleaded in North Queensland reached a 13-month high.

“Last month drivers were slugged on average 140.4 cents per litre (Cpl) - a jump of 5.4cpl on the previous month and the highest average price since February last year,” Ms Ritchie said.

“We also saw the norths price hike phase span a record 16 days, meaning it took more than two weeks for petrol prices to finally peak, before fuel companies started to discount prices again.

“All capital cities were impacted by the rise in oil prices, which filtered down to prices at the pump.”

Ms Ritchie said the cost

of petrol and diesel across regional Queensland was the highest it had been since March 2020.

“The average cost of unleaded last month hit 135.3cpl and 133.3cpl for diesel in regional centres, a jump of 7cpl on the previous month, but most areas were still relatively cheap compared to Brisbane,” she said.

“Only Mt Isa, Noosa, Emerald, Toowoomba and Longreach recorded an average unleaded price higher than the average of 140cpl, while Miles, the Whitsundays and Moranbah were the cheapest locations for unleaded at 127cpl, 128.3cpl and 128.7cpl, respectively.”

Ms Ritchie said ongoing global COVID-19 restrictions and stalled vaccine rollouts may see reduced demand for fuel, which would help prevent prices from increasing.

Dairy youth camp a huge success

First timer, nine-year old Kirra Andersen and Eachamvale Molly were a delightful duo who got off to a great start winning 1st prize in the Heifer Under 4 months category before being singled out for an Honourable Mention in the junior section of the All Breeds Calf Day. She also scored a fourth in the Junior Group led calf section and, completely hooked by the whole experience, Kirra said she couldn't wait to come back to attend the Beef camp being held from May 15 to 17.

BY SALLY TURLEY MALANDA'S bi-annual All Breeds Educational Dairy Youth Camp has grown into an instructive and social experience that reaches far beyond just grooming and showing cattle.

Last week's four-day camp offered non-dairy students a portal into the dairy industry, tutoring in topics such as parading and clipping cattle and access to a workshop on cattle assessment, but that was only the beginning for the 24 mostly local youths who attended.

Organisers provided a First Aid component, complemented by a visit and demonstration from a snake handler; an agetargeted talk on budgeting from a qualified accountant, Alison Schoorl of Carey Group and multiple opportunities for public speaking throughout the four days. Friendships were formed and strengthened and the experience boosted confidence and increased participants' maturity levels.

Commenting on the fifth Youth Camp their committee has staged since 2012, Greg English of Eachamvale Stud Malanda said “the kids worked really hard this year, they were keen to be here and it was great teaching them.”

“The night before the calf day the seniors were up until 11.30pm getting their calves prepared and they were up again at 4am working to ensure the best possible result, but because they were enjoying themselves they didn't even realise how much effort they were putting in.”

But there was also time for fun, including the Farmers’ Challenge on Thursday night and the Friday afternoon water fight.

Mr English said jokingly, “the Challenge was held under lights and involved a lot of sawdust, potatoes, boiled eggs and lead ropes. Events like the challenge and the water fight help build the camaradarie amongst the group.”

Mr English said while COVID had resulted in about half the usual number of participants, it had worked brilliantly.

“Everyone in the group has had extra time with the tutors and that has paid off in the high quality of grooming and parading we have been seeing in the final stages.

“Covid has also pushed the date of the camp back - usually it would have been held last October, but running it over the Easter holidays worked well as a lead up to the show season. The Malanda show is in less than nine weeks, so the stock and the competitors have already done much of the hard work for that event.” he said.

Bronwyn English of Eachamvale Stud said the participants were split into three groups across the age levels, with an older, more experienced member who had demonstrated leadership potential, mentoring the younger and newer members.

She said this format had been successful as younger children often responded well to learning from other kids.

Greg and Bronwyn English, who were the proud owners of the first Illawarra heifer, Eachamvale CV Princess 7, to be classified VG87 under the All Breeds Classification system, supplied 19 calves for use during the camp, with representation encouraged from all breeds.

Mike and Phil Hentschke travelled from South Australia to present a cattle assessment workshop to local dairy farmers on the Tuesday before camp, followed by a scaled down version of that workshop to students later in the week and Mike also judged each of the events.

Malanda dairy farmer of Jersey and Brown Swiss cattle, Paul Newland tutored students in handling and parading their calves and Brown Swiss judge from Mareeba, Simon Tognola trained them in the finer arts of clipping their charges.

Sponsors whose support made the whole event possible included Rabobank who donated all the shirts and trophies, Carey Group, who donated their time as well as cash and Malanda Electricians Smart Elec tested and tagged all the equipment for use during the camp.

New owners of the Malanda Milk Factory, Bega Cheese supplied the dairy products needed to feed hungry participants and Eacham Produce and Advanced Rural helped keep the stock fed.

Cash donations from the federal and state branches of the Illawarra Cattle Society and the federal branches of the Jersey and Holstein Australia Societies helped cover many of the other costs involved.

And though the All Breeds Youth Camp wasn't really about winning, there were plenty of winners across a range of events.

Overall Student of the Camp Award went to Kimberly Daley of Millaa Millaa and RunnerUp Overall Student was Mary English of Malanda. The Junior

Encouragement Award went to Reece Rielly, while Genevieve Daley picked up the Intermediate Encouragement and Nash Battle and Rebecca Payne shared the Senior award.

The Supreme Heifer Award went to Mary English and Eachamvale Cindy 60, they also took out the Junior Champion Heifer category. The Reserve Junior Champion Heifer was won by Terese Daley with Eachamvale Sarah 72 and newcomer Kirra Andersen received an Honourable Mention with Eachamvale Molly.

In the Senior Division, Rachel English received the award for Avvonleigh Choice, Reserve Champion Heifer went to Nathan Daley's Ourway Dragonheart Phyllis and Rebecca Payne received an Honourable Mention for Ourway Deltalamba Buttercup.

In the Clipping, Judging and Parading components, April Burtenshaw and Malachi Walmsley were 1st and 2nd in the Junior Clipping Award, Mary English and Nathan Daley went 1,2 in the Intermediate Clipping and Patrick English (1) and Terese Daley (2) topped the Senior Clipping section.

Benji Bird (1) and April Burtenshaw (2) topped the Junior Judging Award, Mary English (1) and Nathan Daley (2) led the Intermediate Judging and Terese Daley (1) and Rebecca Payne (2) led the points tally in the Senior Judging.

Benji Bird (1) and Matthew Daley (2) were the top 2 in the Junior Parader Award, with Mary English (1) and Frances English (2) taking out the Intermediate section and the Senior Parader Award went to Lachlan Johnston followed by Terese Daley.

It was the 4th camp for Daniel Courtney, who received a third in the Senior Clipping and an Encouragement award in the Senior Parader section. Daniel, who is from Cairns, said he used to spend hours in the cattle sections of the shows before his grandmother suggested he attend the All Breeds Educational Dairy Youth Camp. The fact that calves are supplied for participants who need them opens these camps out to anyone interested in attending.

Daniel said he enjoyed transforming cattle through the grooming process and that all the people at camp treated him like family.

Beefplan meeting shares information

TABLELAND beef producers gathered near Malanda on Sunday, April 18 for another informative Beefplan Group Meeting to catch up with what has been going on in their industry and with each other.

Chairman Dave Andersen led the group through a variety of topics including the New Zealand Government's recent decision to ban live cattle exports by sea, with a two-year phase out period.

Their Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said the decision upheld New Zealand’s reputation for high standards of animal welfare and while it would affect farmers, exporters and importers, the transition period would help the sector adapt.

Based on recommendations that came out of The Heron Report, following the sinking of the Gulf Livestock 1 in a cyclone last September, Mr O'Connor believed his country must stay ahead of the curve in a world where animal welfare was under increasing scrutiny.

Australia’s Minister for Agriculture, Water and the Environment David Littleproud meanwhile has no plan to follow suit, saying the phasing out of NZ animal exports by sea was a matter for the New Zealand government and Australia had no plans to suspend or ban live animal exports.

He said the Federal Government was confident in Australia's standards, regulations and laws to ensure high standards of animal welfare for livestock exports and continued to support the live animal export trade and its contribution to our economy.

In other good news, Mr Andersen announced the dung beetle grant application lodged

by Remarkable NRM's Louise Gavin last year, had been officially approved. Ms Gavin has just signed the contract with the

National Landcare Program and returned it to them.

She said the project, “Building Numbers and Varieties of Dung Beetles with Atherton Tableland Beef and Dairy Farmers, for Improved Soil and Water Health” should get under way towards the end of May and would run for 18 months, as one of four dung beetle projects operating across Australia.

There may be spaces for a few more participants from the Atherton, Herberton and Barron/Johnston River catchment areas. Participants would be required to gather monthly dung samples for analysis and would be eligible at the end of the 12 month period, to receive a colony of dung beetles, of a species that were low in numbers on their property, but were known to survive well in the area.

Most of the farmers involved in the previous trial will remain in the new project, building up the data base and providing peer support to new members.

An excited Ms Gavin said she will spend a month setting up the project, collect data for 12 months, hold a field day in early 2022 and then spend several months collating and analysing the new data.

Producers were advised that JBS Townsville were changing their Tableland cattle collection days from Sunday to Monday and that they were booked out until July 1st. Their current grid was offering $6.40 for bullocks and $5.55 for cows. The last two cattle sales in Innisfail had been cancelled due to a lack of numbers and no future dates had been proposed.

A couple of Tableland farms had been placed on restrictions after cattle deaths from lead toxicity. Producers were reminded to never dispose of toxic waste in general rubbish dumps or bins. Local councils usually provided options for toxic waste disposal.

Animals may find material contaminated with lead in silage, rubbish dumps and around farm buildings and machinery.

Lead can be present in sump oil and oil filters, lead batteries, flaking lead based pain, old paint tins, lead shot and fishing sinkers, lino, grease and putty.

Symptoms vary according to the degree of poisoning, but animals may show gastrointestinal and/or nervous signs. In cases of acute lead poisoning, animals may be found dead or they may display combinations of colic, staggering gait, rolling eyes, slobbering, blindness and convulsions for a few hours before death.

If your animal is showing signs of lead poisoning you should provide the animal with food, water and shade, keep it separate from others, try to find and remove the hazardous material from your property, collect a sample for analysis and contact your veterinarian.

Mr Andersen said he was in the process of organising another cattle health night for a maximum of 40 producers which would cover relevant cattle diseases, symptoms and treatments, vaccinations, treating cattle that were down and would include a question and answer session.

He said Mick O'Grady, the rep for Tri-Solfen, was also planning to deliver a Pain Relief Workshop which addressed best practices for castration and dehorning. Group members discussed Tri-Solfen's short expiry date and high cost and the possibility of purchasing a larger container and sharing it amongst group members to lower cost and prevent wastage.

Trevor Petersen of Malanda told the group he had been trialling Suplaflo, a bi-product of the ethanol process, as a cheaper molasses alternative for production feeding. He had the product delivered in bulk from Wilmar Sarina and shared it with two

other producers.

He was also involved in a collabarative project between Cape York Natural Resource Management Ltd and Sweeter Soils Holdings Pty Ltd of Innisfail. Sweeter Soils has been using biological soil conditioners and biology simulators to enhance soil health and pasture quality in both wet and dry tropics pastoral enterprises.

Products containing soil biology conditioners were sprayed onto the pasture during rain events, to increase soil microbes and unlock major elements phosporous, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sulphur, in the soil. Long term expected outcomes included a reduction in the need for nitrogen application leading to a decrease in nitrogen run off whilst maintaining pasture and animal health.

Navua Sedge coordinator Rob Pagano from Tarzali gave an update around Senior Principal Scientist with Brisbane DAF, Kunjithapatham Dhileepan's latest visit to the Tablelands.

Recent work by the team of scientists had identified that sedge plants treated with chemical and appearing dead for months were occasionally regenerating. The scientists have begun looking for a more effective carrier to get the Sempra down into the tubers to ensure a total plant kill. Farmers noticing any unusual sedge plant behaviour were encouraged to get those plants to Dr Dhileepan for investigation.

The quest for extra funding and finding effective host specific biological controls continues and in a positive for the Tablelands group, the banana and sugar growers are beginning to show interest in getting involved with the research.

A more progressive Council needed I HAVE read with great interest the latest announcement from Mareeba Shire Council that they support the establishment of a rehabilitation centre within the shire.

I believe that in accordance with compliance to certain conditions this Council decision clearly indicates that Mareeba Shire Council is not going to abrogate their community and other responsibilities and shift citizens who need this specialist establishment and services to become "someone else's problem".

I also have welcomed news confirmed from the Councillors and others that Mareeba now is the largest population outside Cairns in the Far Northern region.

This is confirmation of sound futuristic decisions made by previous progressive Councils that have had the new industrial estate become a reality and growing, the airport development and also extensions in residential, and services in the shire's agricultural and tourism sectors.

However, there seems to be one continued glaring error of judgement on the part of Mareeba Shire Councillors and their minions.

Despite creating the media profile of a progressive shire, it remains puzzling that this same aim at decision making to establish continuing shire wide progress has not been forthcoming with regard to a glaring example of neglect of similar council support and decision making.

For over two decades, a private LOCAL developer has failed to get Council support for the establishment of a new, modern shopping centre right in the town's CBD. This total lack of local progressive foresight has denied local residents the option of a similarly progressive retail sector, purchasing options, increased employment opportunities and, let's face it, purchasing choice that is available in most other centres the size of Mareeba and its Shire that exist right across the nation.

The end result of Mareeba Shire Council's progressive inaction has resulted in many residents (and those in outlying areas who rely on the Mareeba

retail centre) having to go to other centres to exercise their purchasing option. This means an end negative result for the Mareeba Shire economy and added time/travel/delivery costs for those who are forced to shop elsewhere.

The fact remains that while Mareeba Shire has progressed to now contain around 22,000 permanent residents and thousands of visitors each year, the retail sector has had no major development since the Mareeba Centre opened in 1978 - nearly 43 years ago.

As for the naysayers to this proposal, consider that Innisfail has more than two shopping centres to cater for their now smaller population, and even Mossman and Port Douglas (with an even smaller population) has numerous national and local traders, with many other retail businesses (and of course the 3 big supermarket chains).

The question remains "Why is Mareeba missing out in retail services that exist in most other (and often smaller) FNQ centres?"

So how about it Mareeba Shire Council, it is clearly time to remove your self imposed barriers to developing the large expanse of land right in the heart of the town's CBD and really support progress for your shire, its community, and thousands of regular visitors and existing and potential retail supporters from other centres?

To continue to fail to do so will confirm the same blinkered, envious, jealous, retrograde, recalcitrant decision making regarding progress in Mareeba Shire retail sector that you say exists in residential, industry, community services and most other sectors of the Shire - one that is now confirmed the largest by way of population in the Far North (outside Cairns).

It's a no brainer.

Veteran suicide royal commission “SHELLSHOCK” they called it when men seemingly lost all reason in the trenches of Europe in World War 1.

“Battle fatigue” was another term used when fighting men returned home, quiet, distracted, bad-tempered and turning to alcohol before ending the torment

with a permanent solution to the war still going on in their heads.

Now we say “nervous breakdown” and “PTSD”, but while we use these terms to recognise the well-known problem of terrible mental health outcomes for defence personnel, we don’t seem to be any closer to a remedy.

I wholeheartedly welcome Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement of a Royal Commission into veteran and defence suicides because we all want to do better by our veterans and serving personnel.

This announcement is particularly timely leading up to Anzac Day but I am incredibly saddened by a growing anti-military mindset that seems to gain more traction each year.

We don’t glorify war, but we should certainly glorify those who put on their country’s uniform, and we should prove we value their service by fully investigating the struggles they go through.

Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australia for people aged between 15 and 44, and former and serving defence personnel are overrepresented in this sad statistic.

I would like to thank all the government and non-government support services working every day to provide counselling and support for Defence personnel and their loved ones.

And I sincerely thank all Defence Force members – past and present – for their service.

We have a hospital system that is falling apart. With residents having to fly or drive hundreds of kilometres for dialysis.

Until we stand up on our own two feet and tell Brisbane’s major parties to stick it up their jumper, we will continue to be treated as the poor cousin.

Every man and woman in North Queensland who goes into a ballot box and votes for Labor or Liberal should be ashamed of themselves.

So, it’s going to cost $1 Billion for an extra 10,000 seats or one hundred thousand dollars per extra seat.

Farmers have been taught to ‘kill’ anything that affects their crops, whereas perhaps we should be looking at ‘protection’ of plants at this time, by making the crops ‘distasteful’ to the pests and sending them back to the bush.

If there was a way of making your crops ‘inedible to insects’ because of a change in the plant’s digestibility to caterpillars and insects but not affecting humans or animals in any way, then would it make more sense.

Would it be great if this new method not only protected your crops but also gave you the grower a bigger, better harvest of superior produce.

Could you believe that you will be able to reduce your fertilizer input, saving money but still get at least the same and probably more from the same paddock.

It is possible to grow crops for years applying no Phosphates on your soil WHY because most farms have unused, so called unavailable phosphate within the soil profile waiting to be released.

Can you accept some or all of the above, if there was a product on the market at this time that could make it all happen?

Many Agronomists are advising farmers to use seaweed on their farms to improve the fertility of their soils, grow better crops, reduce erosion and improve Carbon levels… Seaweed is a combination of all the above and it can work very quickly.

Cold times are worse for life than warm times. The oceans absorb vast amounts of CO2 (see Henry’s Law), which is essential for all plant life – terrestrial and aquatic. Food chains then collapse.

While you’re at windy.com, turn on the CO layer. Man-made CO2 is produced in the same processes as CO, making CO a useful proxy to identify sources of man-made CO2.

In both extremes our survival will depend on strong, reliable, affordable electricity generators.

Our official government policy of moving to short-lived, unreliable, intermittent, inertialess, “renewable” electricity generators is the exact opposite of what we need to be doing.

Sadly, progressive wrongology has displaced the proper scientific method in left-wing academia and our politicians have been brainwashed into their physics-defying dogma.

If we don’t start deleting renewables and building coal and nuclear generators (and strengthening our military) we are in for a world of pain.

Ingredients ► 4 eggs ► 2/3 cup honey ► ½ cup coconut oil ► ¾ cup brown sugar ► 2 tsp vanilla extract ► 1 tsp salt ► 1 tsp baking powder ► 1 tsp cinnamon ► 1½ tsp baking soda ► 2/3 cups unsweetened cocoa ► 2 cups all purpose flour ► 3 cups shredded zucchini ► 2½ cups chocolate chips

Method

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease and flour 2 loaf pans.

2. Grate or shred up enough zucchini to make 3 cups. Set aside.

3. Beat eggs, honey, melted coconut oil, brown sugar and vanilla until smooth.

4. Add in salt, baking powder, baking soda,cinnamon, cocoa and flour. mix well.

5. Stir in zucchini and 2 cups of chocolate chips.

6. Pour batter into prepared loaf pans and sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top.

7. Bake 60 minutes. Remove bread. Let bread rest in pan for 15 minutes. Remove from pans and let cool completely.

Sailing siblings Travis (above) Breanne (top right) have once again made waves in the sailing world after competing in several regatta’s over the Easter holidays.

Wadley’s sailing success IT was yet another school holiday full of sailing for the Wadley siblings as they once again took to the seas.

The first regatta they participated in was Sail Airlie at the Whitsunday Sailing Club over the Easter long weekend.

Breanne Wadley won the Sabot division, sailing her boat Breezy as she breezed through the competition winning eight out of the thirteen races over the three days of competition.

Travis came second in the North Queensland Laser Championships in a hotly contested Laser Radial fleet with competitors travelling from Sydney to attend.

After the regatta, Travis and Breanne attended the two-day Talent Search training camp hosted by the Queensland Academy of Sport.

Travis then competed at the Queensland State Laser Championships at the Port Denison

Sailing Club in Bowen, with 79 lasers competing in the threeday event Travis sailed well and came away with the U19 Division State Championship Title, he won two of the seven races over the three days and placed third overall.

Breanne has taken a step further as she has been asked to do a coaching session at the O'pen Skiff Regatta in Sydney at the end of the school holidays.

SPORT Roosters host Super Cup round THE Atherton Roosters have secured a round of the 2021 Activate Queensland Intrust Super Cup with the Northern Pride set to face off with the PNG Hunters in July.

The Intrust Super Cup will be held over July 17 and 18 with multiple major rugby league teams like the Brisbane Tigers and the Townsville Blackhawks facing off against

some regional counterparts.

This is the Roosters fifth time hosting a round of the Intrust Super Cup at their home ground, Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

Council lads secure win DESPITE missing two of their usual starting five, the Council team continually had answers for the competition favourites, Red Devils in a hotly contested match.

Unforced errors cost Rooters KANGAROOS led from start to finish in a powerful showing against the Atherton Roosters, posting a 30-16 win in Saturday nights Cairns District Rugby League first grade premiership

match at a soggy Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

A special ANZAC ceremony took place before the kick off and it was the hosts who were under pressure from the outset.

Brothers win 30-10 in ANZAC day match AFTER a tough win on the road last week the Mareeba Gladiators returned home to face off against Cairns Brothers in a special ANZAC day game last Sunday, unfortunately going down.

The A-grade game was preceded by a special ANZAC Day ceremony before the whistle blew and the game got underway.

Brothers took the advantage early coming out of the gate hard and fast to put two unanswered tries on the Gators.

The home side did not sit idly by however quickly answering back as Thomas Hughes scored a brilliant try off Shaun Stephens chip kick over the Brothers defensive line quickly followed by Ezra Tokarahi scoring another try.

The two teams were locked in a bitter stalemate for the remainder of the half before a successful conversion kick by Brothers put them up, sitting 1210 at the half.

Brothers got a good pep talk at halftime as they came out and put the pressure on Mareeba scoring another try five minutes after the break.

The Gators fought hard to keep Brothers away from their try line and Brothers responded in kind as both teams were constantly stopped just short from the try line.

In the waning minutes of the match Brothers dug deep and pulled the game out of reach for the Gators as they put on two more tries to seal the deal at 3010.

Atherton’s restart was strong with two quick tries through winger Nelson Bob and fullback Ty Grogan closing the gap to 2012 eleven minutes into the second session. But the celebration was short for the Roosters as Kangaroos replied with three more tries which tied up the contest.

es but were again guilty of unforced errors and have also now added a few more names to the club’s growing list of injury concerns.

Atherton now have two weekends without any competition and will look to regroup for their return on May 15 against Suburbs.
