THE big stage is calling the names of the Mareeba State School (MSS) Auslan Signing Choir for their third performance in the Creative Generations: State School’s on Stage (C-Gen) in Brisbane this year.

From Thursday July 15 to Saturday, July 17, the talented students will join with the Toowong State School Auslan Choir to perform on stage.

ler Bartlett said this is the third time the school has taken part in the show and is excited for their less restricted trip to Brisbane this year.

“Last year due to COVID we weren’t able to go down and do the face-to-face performance, but this year we will finally get to go down and have that interaction,” she said.

“We do rehearsals twice a week at the moment, but we will be cutting down to one as we get closer to the date.

“We practise the rules that they have at C-Gen and learn the lyrics to the song and the signs to go with it and all the timings with (AUSLAN choir conductor and facilitator) Ms Susi Wahjuningrum.”

Ms Bartlett said that the students participate in the practises during their own time before school and during lunch hours to ensure they are prepared for the big performances.

Auslan student leader Zach Marinelli said he is excited to

go down for the second time, but has a lot more responsibility this year.

“I am not as nervous as the first, but I am a little bit stressed as I am now the captain and have more responsibility,” he said.

“I try to help other Auslan signers with correcting their mistakes and helping our teacher Ms Susi.”

Tourists and travellers alike are encouraged to ‘Touch the Top’ as new campaign is launched to promote the Tablelands region as a tourist destination

BY MICHAEL WARREN TABLELANDS Regional Council has launched a new campaign that it hopes will inspire and motivate a host of future travellers and tourists to explore and experience the wonderous sights, sounds and attractions the region has to offer.

Dubbed ‘Touch the Top’ the campaign will encourage both in and out of region travelers to ‘top off their trip’ by making sure they spend quality time in The Tablelands and not just Cairns when they visit Far North Queensland.

That includes experiencing first-hand the region’s core pillars of nature and adventure and other options in the Tablelands

such as culture, sport and military activities.

In Queensland’s highest town, Ravenshoe, on the balcony of its historic pub, the Ravenshoe Hotel, tourism operators, business owners, community members and local Councillors listened to campaign creators, C7EVEN about talk about the campaign, what it entails and why the ‘Touch the Top’ slogan is the focus of the campaign.

“The ‘Touch the Top’ campaign name is in reference to The Tablelands being the highest general (geographical) area around FNQ,” C7EVEN Director Sara Crowe exclusively told The Express.

“This was the theme that resonated with the community

through consultation.

“The campaign will target those that arrive in Cairns for a holiday and want to top off their holiday by experiencing the Tablelands.

“It is a digital and PR campaign that will focus on the nature and adventure activities available across the region and our campaign will showcase as many of those as we can.

“We want to drive people to the Atherton Tablelands website too, so people can access itineraries and things to do and top off their trip with a visit to the Atherton Tablelands.”

BY MICHAEL WARREN THE launch of the region’s latest tourist attraction continues to near with Talaroo Hot Springs to welcome its first day and overnight guests in the coming months.

Talaroo Hot Springs between Mount Surprise and Georgetown on Ewamian Country will deliver a unique visitor experience from a First Nations perspective in an accessible outback setting.

More specifically the Hot Springs will be an opportunity for the Ewamian people to showcase the magical wonders of Talaroo and for guests to experience a deeper reconciliation between people, culture and place.

“We want you to come and share it (Talaroo) with us,” proud Ewamian woman and vice chair of the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation Jenny Lacey told The Express.

The Talaroo Hot Springs experience includes a boardwalk above the springs and private soaking pools.

A range of guided springs tours will operate, with others to be unveiled in the future.

“The Hot Springs will only be accessible on ranger guided tours which will last around 45 minutes and share stories about Talaroo history, geology, ecology of the springs and contemporary work of Ewamian rangers,” Talaroo spokesperson Sheena Walshaw said.

“Guests will also be able to explore parts of the Talaroo Station property, including the Einasleigh River, and will be provided with a mud map on arrival showing accessible areas.”

Guests will be able to stay in powered or unpowered sites with future plans to offer glamping tents and self-contained cabins. Talaroo will be a dog friendly attraction.

New series to shine light on beauty of Torres Strait COOK Member Cynthia Lui attended the launch of “Strait to the plate” last week – a fivepart television series which will showcase the wonderful array of food and beautiful landscape of the Torres Strait.

The SBS commissioned series is hosted by the Torres Strait’s own Aaron Fa’aoso and is expected to generate $830,000 for the local Torres Strait economy.

The series was shot on the islands of Badu, Poruma.

“I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the premiere of Strait to the Plate at Parliament House,” Ms Lui said just days ago.

“The series is centred around food; it (also) brought to light the uniqueness of the region, its beauty, culture and people.”

The first episode aired on April 22, with episodes on Thursday nights at 7.30pm.

BY MICHAEL WARREN TAKE a trip down memory lane and get insights into what life was like in the 1950s in Far North Queensland when Herberton’s Historical Village comes alive for its annual country and folk music pioneer festival this weekend.

A range of entertainment and activities including Pio-

neer fashions on the field, blacksmithing, vintage machinery demonstrations, live exhibitions, train rides, a petting zoo and pack donkeys will keep everyone busy during the two-day festival.

Landholders protect their rainforest land FAR Northern landholders who love their patch of rainforest are signing up to better protect it in the future.

Long-time Kuranda resident Susan Doherty is one of them – she recently sold her land with “peace of mind” after placing a conservation agreement over it with help from Kuranda Envirocare and Terrain NRM. “I’ve been surrounded by beautiful regenerative rainforest for 28 years and during that time I’ve regularly seen people buying blocks and dropping trees,’’ Ms Doherty said.

“I want to make sure that doesn’t happen on this piece of land. It’s well worth preserving.”

Kuranda Envirocare is helping landowners to apply for voluntary declarations – agreements under the Queensland Government’s Vegetation Management Act that protect areas of privately-owned native vegetation with high conservation values.

The organisation’s Cathy Retter said the movement was gaining momentum.

“We’ve helped with five voluntary declaration applications recently and we have interest

now from another six landholders,’’ she said.

“Kuranda is at a bottleneck in the world heritage area, with just a narrow corridor connecting the northern and southern parts.

Every piece of habitat counts.

“A lot of freehold land here has the same values as the world heritage listed rainforest, but it’s not protected in the same way.

Through this project, we’ve already found one of the best examples in the area of a kauri forest ecosystem.”

Event to bring economic boom

BY RHYS THOMAS MORE than 300 petrol heads are expected to race out to the Springmount Raceway this coming weekend for the 2021 Northern Nats, ready to test their cars and burn through some tyres.

Taking place from May 7 to 9, the Northern Nats attracts car enthusiasts from all corners of Australia for a weekend full of rev bashing, tyre blowing fun.

Drag racing, burnouts, car show, power, skids and roll racing are just some of the events that eager participants and spectators can look forward to in this year’s event.

After last year’s Northern Nats

was cancelled participants were left out to dry with only a few smaller, local drag events going ahead.

This year restrictions eased in time so racers and spectators will be able to flock to the raceway for the first Raceway event in nearly a year.

Michael Gonzalez has been racing in the Northern Nats for the past four years sporting his VC SLE Holden Commodore with its stock 355 engine for its first year.

After realising that he wanted to go much faster, Michael purchased a 2017 HSC GTS engine and swapped out his old engine.

“Everyone does that they get a bit of a feel for it and goes ‘I want to go

faster’,” he said.

Initially running over 10 second times for the quarter mile with his stock engine, after some much needed upgrading his car now does a consistent 8.9 seconds for the quarter mile with over 900hp to the wheels.

“You want to beat your competitor, you want to do better than you last time, you want to be faster than your fastest, that’s a given,” Michael said.

“But to me I really enjoy the spectators and how they get involved, seeing their faces when you dive back down the return road.”

Around 200 entrants are currently registered for the Northern Nats, however Managing Director of Spring-

mount Raceway Evan Yelavich expects this number to continue to grow right up until the first car enters the drag strip.

“Typically, we end up with about 300 entrants and the entrants are certainly on track to hit that mark,” he said.

“For Northern Nats we get cars from Victoria and New South Wales, all over the country really and some big names in the burnout scenes.

“They (the competitors) love coming up here, they generally tie it in with a holiday and do quite a few things on the Tablelands and in the region.”

MAREEBA is well on its way to returning to the bustling tourist filled pre-COVID town it was with events like the Northern Nats ready to go for 2021.

Massive community events like the Rotary FNQ Field Days and the Northern Nats bring an influx of visitors to the town who like to explore, enjoy and splurge.

The Northern Nats is expected to get nearly 300 entrants excluding spectators for their weekend long activities this coming weekend.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said that this event does just as much for the community as it does for the raceway.

“Events like Northern Nats bring people, and once people come into the community they spend money on all different levels,” he said.

“From booking hotel rooms to food and the essentials, it generates more activity within the economy and helps promote the region.”

“Events like this give locals a lot of reasons to get out, people have pent up energy from a very quiet year and even this year.

“I think that events this year are going to be supported very strongly because people just want to get out and back into normality as much as possible.”

THE Rotary FNQ Field Days organising committee is taking extensive steps to ensure that this year’s event will be recording breaking, safe and fun for all exhibitors, patrons and visitors.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 12 months ago, the organising committee has been hard at work implementing a range of new and improved safety measures that meet Government standards.

For the first time ever online ticket sales have been introduced, allowing for contact tracing as well as a faster and more streamlined entry into the event at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds on May 26, 27 and 28.

Other measures that will be in place include wide and open laneways, social distancing

and hygiene stations positioned across the grounds for all to use.

Rotary FNQ Field Days chairman Trevor Duncan strongly encouraged all those attending this year to book their ticket online prior to arriving.

“We’ve contracted a large IT company to help out with the online booking, the experience is simple and easy to get your ticket now,” he said.

“For anyone attending, all you need to do is visit the Rotary FNQ Field Days website, follow the ticket link and purchase a ticket for the day you’d like to attend. We have created a step by step video also on the website to assist people.

“Simply print that ticket or save it to your phone and it will be scanned on your way through

the gates on the day. It’s as simple as that.

“The process for entering into the gates on the day will be much quicker for our patrons”.

A long list of crowd favourites will be returning to the Rotary FNQ Field Days this year, including the mighty tractor pull, emergency services mock rescues, health and wellbeing pavilion, family and kids area, new release machinery and agriculture technology and innovation, and much more.

The Rotary FNQ Field Days is joint initiative between the Rotary Clubs of Atherton and Mareeba is held biennially.

Council refutes claims of anti-development More parking in the main street – one of the development programs currently underway by Mareeba Shire Council.

OVER $19 million in building applications have been approved in the Mareeba Shire in the last three months with over $50 million approved since July 1, 2020.

A report was presented to council recently that highlighted the positive economic growth with an increase in dwelling approvals by over $10 million, compared to the parallel quarter in 2020.

Commercial values have also followed the trend with over $4 million in building approvals granted since the start of the

year.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said that Council welcomes any development to the shire that will boost economic growth, create employment and investment opportunities.

“This council has a robust history of supporting and encouraging development opportunities across the shire,” she said.

Mayor Toppin also refutes any suggestion that the council is hindering the development of a potential shopping centre in the Mareeba CBD.

“Council has issued several approvals for a new shopping centre in Mareeba,” she said.

“In 2017 council approved an application for a new shopping centre in Mareeba and this approval is still current.

“It is up to the applicant now to progress with the development.”

The shopping centre was initially approved in the early 2000’s, since then the approvals have lapsed, and new ones lodged up until the latest approval which is still valid until 2024.

Rehab centre given green light

BY RHYS THOMAS MAREEBA will become home to a new drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre after the Mareeba Shire Council gave Mission Australia the all clear at last month’s ordinary council meeting.

An application was lodged earlier in the year for Mission Australia to build a voluntary residential rehabilitation centre on the outskirts of Mareeba, just past the Davies Creek turnoff.

The centre is set to house up to 10 clients under a 12-week holistic rehabilitation program followed by a 6-month community aftercare program.

During the required public notification process there were four submissions all of which objected to the proposed development.

During the meeting when the motion was passed Councillor Locky Benstead also voted against the development, he was

the only councilor to do so.

Cr Benstead was approached by members of the public who owned property near and adjacent to the proposed development site.

These residents voiced their concerns about trespassing, theft and a range of other issues that could arise out of having the facility so close to their properties.

“As a councilor you have to weigh up all of your options and I went with the option to stand with the residents,” he said.

“I agree with the facility, I think it’s a wonderful idea, I just don’t agree with its location.

“I would like to have seen a more proactive approach in security for the facility.”

In the statement provided by Mission Australia to the MSC they stated that patients attending the facility are their voluntarily and any unauthorised absence from the property will result in their immediate removal.

Mission Australia Regional Leader Dr Phil Flint said that there has been a need for a facility like this in the region for many years.

“There is a significant need for alcohol and other drugs withdrawl and rehabilitation services in the greater Cairns region,” he said.

“For existing illicit substance and alcohol users, their fate rests on the availability of appropriate rehabilitation facilities.

“This service is another great opportunity to deepen our connections here in Mareeba and increase our level of support so we can do our part to help people thrive.”

Local contractors will be sought out during the construction phase of the rehab centre, set to start in the next financial year.

After construction has finished passionate local community members will be pursued to work at the centre.

Businesses reduce social media headaches with new workshop TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) will be hosting a ‘Basic Social Media and Canva for Business’ workshop on Tuesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 20, with two small local businesses excited to expand their brand online.

The two free sessions will help show business owners how to leverage the power of social media and avoid the headaches that come with spreading the word about their brand.

Sam Banks from Together Tablelands and Leeandra Norman from Lovelee Cooking are two local businesswomen who will join in the session where they will learn new marketing skills.

Basic Social Media and Canva for Businesses will cover Facebook scheduling and analytics, the dos and don’ts in social media and basic designing skills on the program Canva.

Ms Banks says that she will be attending the program to help connect with her customers and promote her handmade goods at Together Tablelands. “I would love to be able to reach more customers and grow my business with social media,” she said.

“As a former councillor,

I know the benefits to workshops such as these and I am ready to use it to benefit my business.”

Ms Norman says that she wants to see her family’s catering and food manufacturing business upscale from what it is now.

“Our business has done catering from things as small as camps to as large as the Targa Races and we want to get our name out there more,” she said.

“We already have a Facebook and a website, but I only know how to post a photo with a small caption, so I want to expand that into something better.

“That’s why I am going to the Basic Social Media and Canva for Business workshop, so we can tell our story to new customers and connect with our repeat customers.”

Key stakeholders of the Mitchell River system met last Thursday to discuss the launch of a new sentinel program to watch for Amazon Frogbit.

Program launched to monitor Frogbit KEY stakeholders and concerned community members of the Mitchell River catchment got together last Thursday to launch a new sentinel program targeting Amazon Frogbit.

Currently within the Mareeba Shire Amazon Frogbit has inhabited Atherton and Chinaman creeks as well as both Granite

Creek and the Barron River.

Amongst fears that this destructive and highly invasive weed could spread into the Mitchell River catchment and tributaries, a sentinel program has been established.

Organisations like Brooklyn Wildlife Sanctuary, Barron Catchment Care, Mareeba Shire

Council, EQ Resources and South Edge Pastoral all met at Two-Mile Creek to discuss the launch and support of the Mitchell River Watershed Management Groups’ sentinel program.

This program seeks to monitor six sites along Two-Mile Creek and into lake Mitchell on regular intervals during the year

to ensure that Frogbit has not taken ahold.

The groups that attended have thrown their support behind the program either in the form of money or organisational support.

The six sites will continue to be monitored to ensure that the Mitchell River catchment stays clear of Amazon Frogbit.

THE KP mango competition winners were awarded their prize money at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday, April 27.

Each year that passes the competition, to see who grows the Largest Kensington Pride Mango becomes more intriguing as more and more farmers and back yard mango growers join in the fun.

KP mango competition are as follows: In third place winning $200 was Milan Maloberti from Mutchilba with a KP weighing in at 1.210Kg’s and in second place winning $300 from Caravonica was Cian Butler with a mango weighing in at 1.479Kg. This year’s King pin was Mareeba local ben Stabile who won the $500 first prize with a mango grown on his father’s property on McGrath Road weighing 1.502Kg. Mr Stabile said the giant mango was grown by accident and believes the secret ingredient was being next to the

chicken coop.

“It was a bit of a shock really we don’t have a mango farm as such just a few trees here and there, a bit of a hobby,” said Ben. “We have a chook pen nearby, so we believe that is the contributing factor to grow such a whopper.

“It’s a bit of fun and I definitely recommend for people to give it a try next year, it’s worth checking your trees for $50.”

The popular competition wil again run at the end of the year.

NEWLY released property valuations show just what’s been happening across the Tablelands over the last few years.

Mayor Rod Marti believes the demand for land on the Tablelands is higher than it has ever been and there appears no sign of it slowing down.

“Land in the region is in demand because of our reputation as a high-value agricultural hotspot, for its reliable rainfall and available water, and because it’s a sought-after place to live,” Mr Marti told The Express.

“The flow on effect of having perhaps the highest value agricultural land in the country and high liveability is the influence this has on land valuations.

“The valuations, conducted by the Department of Resources (DoR), also considers the land type and how it is used.

“Like all Councils, we use DoR’s land valuations in the calculation of rates and will do our best to mitigate the upward impact, however it won’t be easy.

“If we have had a spike in land valuations in just one area, we could capture and manage that particular area, however on this occasion the changes to land valuations have occurred across the entire region.”

Kuranda’s giant fig removed for safety of town LAST Tuesday, an ancient fig tree planted in 1931 was removed from Coondoo Street in Kuranda due to the poor condition it was in.

The fig tree had lived through a World War, a global pandemic and watched the tourist town through its highs and lows.

Mareeba Shire Council

(MSC) received the approval to remove the tree from Department of Environment and Science and will replant a new semi-mature fig tree to live through the next century.

MSC said that the removal is necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians and other road users in Kuranda.

LAST Tuesday members of the Soroptimist International of the Tropical Tablelands (SITT) invited Lesa Moro, the Days for Girls Mareeba Team Leader to assist SITT with their ‘Days for

Girls Kits’.

The ‘Days for Girls Kits’ are designed to provide girls and women in developing countries with reusable menstrual hygiene kits.

These kits give them the independence to leave their homes to attend school or participate in the workforce.

Women get empowered MORE than 50 Indigenous women rangers from across Queensland have gathered in Palm Cove for a day of networking, empowerment and learning at the first Queensland Indigenous Women’s Ranger Network (QIWRN) event for 2021.

QIWRN was established in 2018 to provide a forum for women rangers to share their experiences, ideas and information and enable connections in remote and isolated communities.

Network Director Larissa Hale said the network gave women rangers a voice ad helped them develop more confidence in the workplace and at home.

Alice Street Dental Practice Manager Natalie Eakin said that this was just her way of giving back in the best way she knew how.

Nina was born in 1921 to some of the first residents of Millaa Millaa.

“As a result of QIWRN, I’ve witnessed the ladies go from strength to strength, taking more leading roles in their ranger teams and communities,” she said.

“We have women from all over the State, working for Indigenous ranger groups and government bodies such as Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, and together they really bring out each other’s strengths.”

Network member Chantel Van Wamelen travelled from the Fraser Coast to attend the workshop, and said being part of the group was worthwhile for her both personally and professionally.

High functioning Fassifern females

HIGHLY functioning females are the focus at Mo and Charleene Pedersen's Fassifern Limousin Stud outside Malanda.

The Pedersen's ask a lot of their cattle and comprehensive record keeping lies at the heart of their decision making process.

With just 100 acres (40.5ha) of rich farming country to work with, there is no room for slackers. Every animal's productivity is monitored from birth and they must continue to meet the exacting standards required of them by their stud principals.

The Pedersens act on a three strikes and your out system at Fassifern. Breeders are pregtested five-six months post calving and must be at least two months in calf at that stage.

Empties are culled to ensure the herd remains within the 12 month calving cycle.

Bulls are put in with the cows at the start of August to achieve the desired June to September calving. Mr Pedersen said June/ July was their optimum calving time and they could calve out to December, but they did not like calves born after Christmas.

He said November/December calves were seasonally disadvantaged, as usually it was either very dry by December, or very wet if the notorious Tableland wet season had kicked in.

“Late calves often copped a hard time and weighed up to 50kg less than their mid-year born counterparts,” Mr Pedersen said.

Calves must achieve a minimum weaning weight of 240kg by eight months of age. They were weighed at birth and again at 200 days and were expected to average a minimum daily weight gain of .9kg/day through until weaning.

Maiden heifers are often calved later, so they were held back to ensure they fell into line with the cows. Mr Pedersen said some consideration was made regarding seasonal conditions and time of calving, but cows that produced under-performing calves for two consecutive years were culled.

Mo and Charleene Pedersen believe good record keeping is at the heart of a well run, productive cattle operation and monitor their animal's performance continually from birth, ensuring there are no loafers in the system.

“We expect our breeders to cycle and go back into calf quite quickly. The Bos Indicus are less reliable, but some of the droughties cycle a month or two after calving and they are the ones you want to breed from. We are achieving 80% pregnancy across the herd,” Mr Pedersen said.

“We mate our heifers at 15 to 18 months of age once the Droughtmaster heifers reach 400kg and the Limos are 450kg.

We will keep breeders up to 13 or 14 years of age if they still producing, but we don't feed our cows so they need to achieve targets totally unassisted by supplementary feeding,”

Fassifern's other priorities included structure for longevity in their cattle, docility and polledness across the herd.

Foot structure and health were most important as lame animals cannot make progress and the correct pin height in breeding females was essential for ease of calving. Bottle teated cows were culled immediately.

As a family run operation, docility was an essential Fassifern trait Mr Pedersen said.

“Our daughters work in the yard with us so the cattle must be able to be easily and safely worked. Anything a bit loopy in the head is gone. Quiet cows usually produce quiet calves,

but there are exceptions,” he said.

“We use polled bulls and keep polled or scurred cows.

We only had to dehorn 1 calf last year in the commercial herd. Charleene and I both work off farm and for us the whole operation is about productivity and ease of operation.

“We rotationally graze our cattle and we fertilized late last year with nitrogen, phosporous and potassium for the first time in four years as we believe annual application knocks the biological activity in the soil. One tonne of lime to the acre was applied across the farm in 2019.”

The Pedersens purchased

their stud from the Fassifern Valley near Boonah in 2002.

They trucked the females and a bull to the Tablelands, agisting land for them until they purchased their Tarzali block in December of that year.

Most of the breeding herd are French Pure or high grade limousins. Black limousins have since been successfully introduced to the breeding program which functions on softness, muscling, growth and milk production. This season's biggest weaner weighed in at 324kg and their heifers have been selling exceptionally well at local sales.

“We pride ourselves on our

performance recording and being part of Breedplan. Our EBV's (Estimated Breeding Values) help buyers make a more informed decision when buying our bulls,” Mr Pedersen said.

“All Fassifern stud animals are backed with the Limousin Society Quality Assurance for structure, fertility and docility, are tested free of and vaccinated for Pestivirus and all bulls are vaccinated for Vibriosis.

“We aim to produce muscled calves with plenty of width so they can carry beef,” Mr Pedersen said.

“For me it's (about) giving back to the community; we want Mareeba to thrive and to build a strong community,” Ms Lopez said ahead of Mother’s Day. “It's about being able to provide options and possibilities for our kids.

“The friendships I have formed over the years is something that I will always treasure. I've met so many different people.”

Women combine to assist disadvantaged children MOTHERS and women alike from Atherton and across The Tablelands will unite in coming days with the purpose of making a significant contribution to the lives of disadvantaged children based in Africa.

Local based charity Regained will host a pre Mother’s Day high tea with all raised funds to be used to assist children living in western Kenya regain opportunities that have been lost through being disabled, orphaned or living in poverty.

“Regained does this by contributing to medical expenses, sponsoring children to attend specialist schools for the disabled and supporting sustainable agricultural, educational and community projects,”

local Regained president Robyn Lindsay told The Express.

“The High Tea will be held this Saturday at Destiny Café, Loder St, Atherton from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, with the cost $20 per person.”

Bellacapella will provide the entertainment with raffles and lucky door prizes to held throughout the event.

Funds raised from the high tea will be given to children in Africa to help them fight poverty and difficult circumstances.

New musical Talent on Tablelands

A GENTLE but passionate new musical presence, Ben Wilson, has arrived on the Atherton Tablelands music scene and has just finished recording his second Album "Prove." Invited to record at Sunstudios, tucked away in the picturesque hills of northern New South Wales, Wilson believes listeners will sense the presence of the ancient rainforests surrounding the studio in his music.

Speaking at his live performance and album launch in Yungaburra recently, Mr Wilson said he was thrilled he was able to release Prove in Vinyl and CD form with the help of crowd funding to cover the cost of production.

Like so many artists at the moment, his work has been heavily impacted by COVID. Normally, on the back of making a new album, he said he would be doing gigs, performing at festivals and going on tour, but none of that is possible at the moment. He said the pre-sale funding option was his only chance. The album's future was totally in the hands of his audience and they came through for

him.

Ben Wilson is an award winning Songwriter, recently from Northern NSW, whose eclectic style fused the cosiness of folk and bluegrass with an energetic undercurrent of rock and roll producing an easy listening and yet inclusive live atmosphere for his audiences.

Born and raised in Brighton England, Ben Wilson's solo career kicked off after he moved to Lismore NSW at the age of 21. In 2013 he won Songwriter of the Year at the Lismore Young Songwriters competition, before selfreleasing two well received EPs (Lonely One 2013 and St Albans 2015).

Performances at most significant Australian festivals followed, including Splendour in The Grass (after becoming a finalist of the Busking Competition), Falls Music & Arts Festival, Mullumbimby Music Fest and Bello Winter Music Festival.

In 2017 he won the award for Outstanding Original Music at the Bangalow BBQ and Bluegrass Festival, while intermittently performing as a

member of The Button Collective, a rag tag group of folk musicians who deliver Brodie Buttons' songs with raw energy and passion.

An English ex-pat, a past resident of the USA and now a new Australian, Ben draws on a broad spectrum of influences. He is a seasoned performer, though still passionate about his craft and attaining complete authenticity.

His first album, Give Me That Hammer, tackled the conflict of a man torn between two worlds: life at home with his family, and life on the road as a musician.

His new album, Prove, crafted with a lot of love, and beautifully recorded, projects a strong 1950 rock and roll vibe with minimalist accompaniments. Wilson's songs manage to be touching, ambitious and captivating.

SHAMEFUL ANZAC DISPLAY IN MAREEBA BEFORE I return home at the end of the week, I believe my letter would be of interest to you readers.

I saw firsthand the results of the disgusting attacks on the Cenotaph and ANZAC Park (Mareeba) by disreputable vandals during the lead up to ANZAC Day. I then witnessed an unforgivable performance of inexcusable behaviour from a senior local female citizen, who should have known better, launch an attached on a member of the Council and the person standing next to her during the laying of the wreath’s ceremony on ANZAC Day. How shameful and disgraceful, having to be reprimanded by a member of the RSL. Making enquires later I was informed one of the victims was none other than your town’s patriot with a wealth of unknown accolades, I am sure people would do well to be informed on.

I certainly will broadcast the results of my visit when I return home and, on a day, when “Lest We Forget” is at the forefront of the Nation.

COUNCIL HAS PRIORITIES WRONG ON PROPOSED FOOTPATH I WISH to protest the proposed waste of Taxpayer funds in 6th Avenue Atherton.

Yesterday we received information of a proposed footpath for 6th Avenue for High School children to access.

6th Avenue, has three houses and next to no traffic and an average of 10 children use this route to the High School (four yesterday when it was raining) On the other hand, my morning walks take me to Cook Street, where little children (Primary school children) scamper to cross the road at peak traffic periods.

I frequently walk in Victoria, Beatrice and Alice Streets where the same little children walk on the road because there are no footpaths.

Those who attend the doctors and dentists’ surgeries in Alice Street have no footpath.

I feel Council has its priorities very wrong.

We need zebra crossings and footpaths for the forementioned places well before the proposed footpath on 6th Avenue.

We are awaiting your response as I feel there are many people who would share our concerns.

I REFER to Barry Simpson’s Letter to the Editor on April, 28, 2021 accusing Mareeba Shire Council of not supporting development and blocking a new shopping centre for Mareeba.

Whilst I agree with Barry that Mareeba does need a third supermarket it is no fault of Council this hasn’t eventuated.

In 2010, when I was on Council at Tablelands Regional Council, we approved an application for a shopping centre in Mareeba’s CBD. During my last term on Mareeba Shire Council when I was Deputy Mayor, we approved (again) an application for a shopping centre in the Mareeba CBD on the old sawmill site in 2017.

We also did a deal to include a parcel of land on the western side of the lot to be included in the shopping centre development.

I am also aware of the restrictions and conditions that the Queensland Department of Main Roads would impose on the development, including additional traffic signals at Herberton and Byrnes Street intersections, which may be a major impediment to the viability of the development.

There have been a number of development applications approved for this site and the ball is now firmly in the developer’s court.

FOR 20 years, past Mayors and lobby groups in Mareeba have tried in vain to convince Qld.State Government Health Ministers and Cairns regional health authorities to provide a dialysis/renal unit in our Level 3 hospital to minimise the huge amount of travel and inconvenience to those in need of this chronic care.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui recently stated there will be “NO”dialysis unit installed in the Mareeba Hospital – why is it that Mareeba District Hospital is the only Level 3 hospital in Far North Queensland without a Dialysis Unit and why is it that the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre outside Mareeba has two dialysis units that are just sitting idle and collecting dust?

ROTARY Mareeba members and their guests were delighted to join Comedy Tours’ Vula, Tula and Carona at Skybury Farms recently for laughter, learning and sunset Skybury tastings.

The Night of Comedy collaboration was the first steppingstone for the club in 2021 and President Maree Lopez was excited to get back out planning and hosting events.

“That’s what we’re here for — building those relationships and fundraising for good causes.”

Thanks to the generosity of host and sponsors Skybury Farms, a portion of ticket proceeds from the night was donated to End Polio Now. Polio eradication is one of Rotary’s longest standing and most significant efforts.

With the help of our partners, polio cases have been reduced by 99.9 percent worldwide.

Guests were invited to learn about Rotary Mareeba and Rotary International’s global network of neighbours, friends, leaders and problem solvers and consider becoming people of action themselves to create lasting change globally and in our community.

In other news, the 2021 FNQ Field Days have been in the works since last year and Mareeba and Atherton clubs are seeking volunteers for the event at the end of May. Northern Australia’s largest agricultural Field Days is ready for any obstacle and promises exhibitors and visitors alike the strongest event in history.

3. Melt white chocolate and drop one by one frozen ball in the melted chocolate. Using a fork transfer them onto parchment paper (gently tap off excess chocolate), then put them back in the freezer for 10 mins.

MAREEBA’S Danae Hastie is ready to help lead the new generation of netballers onto the court after she recently returned from a leadership camp.

Danae has been involved in netball as a player since she was 12 years old, after taking a break during her senior year of schooling, she has decided to return to the sport in a leadership role.

To help accomplish this, Danae attended a Netball Queensland Leaders Conference in Brisbane where she gathered with emerging leaders in netball from all around Australia.

Attending the conference at the end of March gave Danae the chance to view the sport from an outside perspective and really see how she can help shape and grow the newest crop of netballers.

“I haven’t been involved in netball for about four years, so I wanted to reconnect and get back into the sport,” Danae said.

“The conference was all about educating young people and communities on what netball is now and what Netball Queensland is transforming into.

“It is a game that is evolving and there are a lot of new ideas coming in like netball X and walk in netball.”

Since Danae had only previously been involved in netball as a player, this conference gave her the chance to see the

“It’s good to look at things differently as a player, to come out of it and see all of the different aspects that happen behind the curtains,” she said.

“I can come back into the club and slide into a position where I can help the young kids improve their leadership skills and love for the sport.

Danae attended the conference with Mareeba Netball President, Michelle Cifuentes,

as the Mareeba Netball youth representative.

“Danae is a perfect example, she has played right from the very beginning, into representative football and into our senior competition,” Mrs Cifuentes said.

“Having her as a role model is a huge success for our small association because she has managed to play and experience a large range of competitions in netball.”

LOCAL basketball legend Andy Harris suited up for the Red Devils in the top of the table clash with a previously undefeated Stingrays outfit, in round four of the Mareeba Men’s Basketball tournament. But he did not play a single minute.

With his two daughters gracing the corporate box, the proud father refused to answer questions when asked about his longawaited return to the hard deck.

Spokesman and Captain of the Devils, Craig Farley, commented post game, “We are keeping the big man on ice until the business end of the season.”

Farley himself had a solid game scoring 21 points and Zayd Myrteza turned in another consistent shooting night with seven triples and 23 on the night.

It will be difficult to confine Myrteza to the local Mareeba competition when his contract expires, but public comparisons to Brice Cotton are for the moment, premature.

Cousin, Zac Myrteza showed flashes of brilliance, but cramps had the working lad down from the clouds where he once soared. Nevertheless, in any game of hoops, points are rarely the whole story.

Twenty-two-year-old, Ricaydan Wason chipped in for a respectable 10 points, and owned the mid-court with his tireless defensive effort.

He firmly held the reins to the Stingrays fast break, and they rarely quenched from their customary fast-break trough.

Wason was player of the round.

Still, the Stingrays were a worthy opposition, in this highquality game. They executed well in the half court.

The evenness of the Ray’s playing group would have pleased captain-coach, Thomson, who was supported by senior players in J. Gully and Point Guard Ted Bear.

The standout Stingray, offensively at least, was youngster Stanley Bustard, with 25 points including five triples. Bustard has mustard, but his defence still lacks the hot sauce.

Final hooter: Red Devils 86 to Stingrays 75.

In the late game, Council 89 feasted on Ballers 52. Youngster Kieran Turner drove at will and bagged 40 on the night.

His constant cries for ‘And one!’ were later deemed a tribute to Harris, who had already turned in for the evening.

Young Collis played a balanced game and Anthony Archie was assertive for much of the game.

For the shambolic Ballers, Newcomer Chris Moloney grabbed 21 and took some of the rebounding pressure off the shoulders of reliable big man, Dean Gallo.

Defensively, Youngster Peter Lipede continues to show grit.

Like the old saying goes, you find out what you are made of, when the chips are down.

Atherton’s best to clash against former greats

Paul Nasser is excited to take on the Bulls Masters all-stars in Tolga on May 21.

BY MICHAEL WARREN ATHERTON’S most talented cricketers have been gifted the opportunity of a lifetime after being selected to play against a host of former state and Australian players in an upcoming Bulls Masters Twenty20 battle in Tolga.

Reigning Cricket Far North player of the year Paul Nassar will spearhead Atherton’s invitational all-stars with the likes of Peter Sceresini and Tom Boorman to battle against an allstars Bulls Masters outfit that includes Ryan Harris, Andrew Symonds, Darren Lehmann, Andy Bichel and Michael Kasprowicz at Morrow Park on May 21.

The game will be preceded by a free kid’s super-clinic, while a sportsman’s dinner and comedy event featuring Harris, Symonds, Daryl Brohmann and others will be held the night before the game at Atherton’s Barron Valley Hotel.

Atherton Cricket Association president Tony Potts said the tour will be a good chance for emerging local cricketers to learn from some fine ex-players.

“When the club was offered the opportunity to host the Bulls, we ran with it – these opportunities don’t come around too often in regional and rural places like Atherton,” Mr Potts said.

“Aside from junior development, the tour is an opportunity for our club to raise funds for

infrastructure improvements, thanks in large to the host of sponsors who have chipped in to bring the Bulls Masters to Atherton.”

Bulls Masters managing director Jimmy Maher said Queensland Cricket valued Far North Queensland’s contribution to keep the state at the top of the tree.

“Creating opportunities and experiences that inspire juniors to stay in the game are important and we’d love to see another young player come through the ranks and pull on the Baggy Maroon from the Far North Region,” Mr Maher said.
