THE Mareeba Animal Refuge has seen a significant decline in the number of rescues in their care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The refuge currently hosts a highly reduced number of rescues stating that they currently have a fifth of what they normally have. But even with the reduced number of animals, the refuge still requires walkers for their dogs and are currently only seeing one volunteer at the most per day, a decline from their previous three to four walkers per day. Mareeba Animal Refuge Manager Jennifer Walsh, is happy to see more animals finding homes, but is appealing for more dog walkers. “There is an increase in adoptions because people would like some company at home while isolated,” she said. “It’s good to see, but we still need dog walkers. “The more walkers we have per day, the longer walks the dogs can have and it makes them so happy.” Applying to be a walker is easy. All you have to do is come to the refuge in the early morning and ask to walk a dog. You will then be given a four legged friend to take for a walk – a great way to do your daily exercise.

Volunteer for other organisations: Many of the State’s regular volunteers are retirees, which means most of them will fall into age categories that make them at a higher risk of severe symptoms of coronavirus. Because of this, some volunteers can’t, and shouldn’t, meet their regular volunteering commitments. If you’ve got time to volunteer to help, visit Volunteering Queensland, Meals on Wheels, or a local organisation you know

that requires volunteers. Give blood: Now more than ever, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood needs people to donate blood. Every blood donation helps save three lives, and with the current pandemic as well as the approaching influenza season, these products will be more useful than ever. Look after your community: We are being asked to stay close to home, but you don’t have to go far to be of help to others. Helping in your community could be as simple as dropping a note in an elderly neighbour’s letterbox to ask if they’d like you to pick up their groceries or sharing old books and toys with a nearby family whose kids are quickly getting bored stuck at home.

Register to work as a healthcare professional: If you’re a healthcare professional, or have experience in health administration or operation, you can register an expression of interest with Queensland Health to work during the pandemic. Head to the Queensland Health website to provide your details. Spread the right messages: Situations like the current pandemic are an opportunity for some people to spread misinformation and fake news. Whether it’s because they’re scared or because they’re deliberately trying to scare others, some individuals and organisations are spreading information on social media that simply isn’t true. This is dangerous and can

put the lives of Queenslanders at risk. We can all do our bit in making sure the truth is getting to our communities. We are being asked to listen and share information from trusted sources only. The Queensland Government website, the Queensland Health Facebook page, the Australian Government website, and the World Health Organisation website are great places to start. Look after yourself: Looking after your own health and wellbeing can help you stay well and out of our healthcare system at a time when it’s operating at increased capacity. First female Mayor ready to lead Shire After nearly two weeks, the Electoral Commission of Queensland has declared the new Mayor’s of the Mareeba Shire and Tablelands Regional Council’s who will lead their communities through these uncertain times ahead...

MAREEBA Shire has officially welcomed its new council and first female Mayor. Last week The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) finally declared the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) with Angela Toppin announced as the new MSC Mayor. Mayor Toppin was officially sworn in as the first female Mayor of the MSC on Thursday, April 9, along with the six councillors making up the new MSC. The councillors include returning councillors Mary Graham, Kevin Davies and Lenore Wyatt as well as

new councillors Locky Bensted, Danny Bird and Mario Mlikota. Angela Toppin released a statement after the ECQ declaration on Tuesday April 7. “It is with great humility that I can now confirm, following the formal declaration of the Electoral Commission Queensland, that I have been elected Mayor of the Mareeba Shire." she wrote. “To those who have supported me, believed in me from the moment I nominated, and been consistent in your faith and friendship – thank you from the bottom of my

heart. “Nipper Brown has been a great opposing counterpart and provided me with a true contest. I congratulate Nipper on his campaign and contribution to our shire over the past six years. I wish he and his family well. The beauty of this election has been that every candidate has only wanted the very best for our shire and residents.” In her statement, Mrs Toppin also acknowledged outgoing Mayor Tom Gilmore. “I feel so much gratitude for our past Mayor Tom Gilmore, for his faith and support, for encouraging me to nominate. Thank you also to Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen for your encouragement. The campaign wasn’t always easy but certainly worth the investment. I wish you both every success and contentment as you pursue other goals and dreams.” In a statement released by the MSC, Mayor Angela Toppin said she's ready to lead the council with integrity, transparency and accountability.

"I look forward to working with the elected council and the community to deliver positive outcomes for the shire," she said. "I am fiercely passionate about this Shire and equally passionate about the people and the possibilities in this Shire. Mayor Toppin said council's first priority is to deal with the impacts of coronavirus. "As a community, we are in unchartered territory, with COVID-19. People are anxious, frightened and overwhelmed by the unknown," she said. "Council's sole focus is on dealing with flow-on impacts and looking at ways to mitigate the social, economic and health effects of this virus." Mayor Toppin also said transport, water, infrastructure and tourism would continue to be at the forefront of the new council. The first meeting of the new council will be held on Wednesday, April 15, where the vote will be taken for a new Deputy Mayor.

New TRC to be sworn in

ON Monday, April 13, the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) formally announced Mr Rod Marti as the new Mayor of the Tablelands Regional Council. At the time of printing, Mr Marti had 48.02 per cent of the vote, roughly equal to the three other mayoral contenders combined. Even though it was a difficult election campaign with social distancing measures implemented by the ECQ, Mr Marti believes that the hard work is now about to begin. “This is going to be a difficult job, it was difficult without coronavirus, given the situation that the TRC was in – now it’s going to be more difficult financially and from an organisational point of view,” he said. “The first thing council has to do is pass the 2021 budget, which is going to be a big hurdle. “We must look at reducing costs. TRC has been putting up rates, spending money and putting on more staff and that’s not sustainable, we need to look at tightening our belt. At the same time, we now have the challenge of coronavirus as well.” The swing towards Mr Marti has been seen by some as a protest vote against the former TRC. “I think we now have a mandate for change within the council, losing Katrina Mellick and Kate Eden (Division 1

councillor) is a significant turn of events,” said Mr Marti. The delegation of power to council officers had also been a battleground leading up to the election with Mr Marti saying it will be one of many topics that will be up for review by the new council. “With the council that I will lead, everything will be up for review. We are going to be asking a lot of questions about a lot of matters.” Mr Marti said he would also like to congratulate all the nominees. “I would like to thank all candidates who nominated, it was a great list of candidates and I would like to congratulate everyone who put their hand up.” As of print deadline, only three councillors had been formally announced by the ECQ for the new TRC – Kevin Cardew for Division 1, Peter Hodge for Division 5 and Bernie Wilce for Division 6. The final three seats that are yet to be declared are all held by incumbent councillors. THE Federal Government has announced a new initiative called “Keep our Mob safe and stop the spread” with the aim of the program to educate people from within communities about the risks of COVID-19. Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said “We need to work together to inform and encourage everyone we know, and in particularly Elders and people over the age of 50 with a chronic disease, to please stay home. Let’s keep our mob safe.” The Member for Cook also warned locals against holding

parties or large gatherings. “Community safety is the number one priority right now,” she said. “While most people are social distancing, there are still reports of people throwing parties. “This needs to stop. “Police are able to fine people up to $1,334 for holding parties right now, and they will crack down if you break the rules. “That means no parties, no barbeques and no big gatherings in community.” Ms Lui said enormous effort was being made to keep COV-

LIBRARIES within the Mareeba Shire Council have been closed until further notice, however a range of their books and resources are available online. The new structure was launched last Monday to restrict the amount of physical contact through the library and with residents. Residents who do not have access to the internet can still hire out books but under much stricter guidelines. Library users can order their books online or by phone and then will be contacted by phone or email with a designated time

to pick-up the items. The controlled borrowing service is available at the Mareeba and Kuranda branches only. Dimbulah and Chillagoe Library users are encouraged to contact the Mareeba Library to discuss borrowing arrangements. A council spokesperson has stated that the online service is safer for all involved. “To assist library members during COVID-19 the library has purchased an extended range of popular eBook and eAudio titles which have unlimited customer access.

“Residents who are not currently members can join online (or by phone) to gain access to hundreds of online resources including movies, tutorials, eBooks and eAudiobooks. “If anyone needs help accessing the online resources, our friendly staff are there to assist from 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday.” The service is currently offered to residents who have a membership to the library, but getting a membership is free and easy for anyone interested. Cousin’s innovate and join forces INNOVATIVE: Mareeba cousins Jamie-Lee Hilton from Teeze cakes Angela Nason from ANason's creations have joined forces to stay in business amid COVID-19.

WITH the current COVID-19 crisis changing the way we live, plenty of Tablelands businesses have had to adapt or perish. Jamie-Lee Hilton and her cousin Angela Nason are two local business women who have adapted and joined forces to stay in business. Jamie-Lee is the owner of Teeze cakes in Mareeba and before COVID-19 she specialised in cakes for large gatherings such as weddings and birthdays. Jamie-Lee started Teeze Cakes five years ago as a side business and late last year she resigned as a chef at the Mareeba Hospital to start working for herself. “Normally I would do wedding and celebration cakes, but

they have now been cancelled or postponed,” she said “But since the lockdown, I have been offering smaller cakes, gift boxes and cupcakes.” “I adapted my business to smaller portions and added the delivery service. If I didn’t change or adapt I wouldn't have a business” Jamie-Lee is now working with her cousin who has also had to adapt and change her business. Angela Nason is a jewellery designer (ANason’s Creations) who is now delivering fruit and vegetables from local farmers. “My family are fruit farmers on the Tablelands and they have had a hard time due to all the pubs and restaurants closing

down,” she said “I decided to start delivering fruit to residents doors, doing drop and run due to social distancing. “I now have several farmers on board that I’m helping to deliver their fruit to locals.” The two cousins decided to join forces so that they could cover more of Far North Queensland. “Jamie-Lee makes cakes, she is delivering to Mareeba and Atherton and I’m now delivering to Cairns,” Angela said. “I usually manufacture jewellery through my company ANason's Creations, but the markets are all closed, all of the retail stores I wholesale to have also closed down and my

income has been cut by twothirds. “So I had some time on my hands to help out my family by delivering fruit boxes.” Angela said that helping farmers is her going back to her roots. “It’s been a massive response from people who don’t want to go to the shops. “People love knowing that they are helping out their local farmers rather than the big supermarkets, people like to support their local community directly. “We are trying to help our community and at the same time we are both helping each other.”

COVID update QUEENSLAND had 12 new confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) over the Easter weekend raising the state total to 983. Locally, the Cairns and the Hinterland region have 11 active cases and 21 recovered cases, taking the total to 32. Contact tracing is underway for the new cases. Queensland Health will notify the community if any other public health alerts are required. The majority of cases are from patients who have travelled overseas, or have had direct contact with a confirmed case who had travelled overseas. There is also now drivethrough fever clinic for COVID-19 testing at the Cairns North Community Health Centre located at 381 Sheridan Street, Cairns. The clinic is available by appointment only

and appointments can be made by calling 4226 4781. People with concerns are encouraged to ring the clinic directly or go to www.health.qld. gov.au for information about symptoms and testing. A person will generally be tested if they have a fever (or history of fever) or acute respiratory symptoms, and, in the last 14 days. If you work in vulnerable settings such as healthcare, aged or residential care, military, correction facilities, detention centres and boarding schools. If you live in the Cairns region (the area bounded by and including Palm Cove to the north, Mareeba to the west, and Gordonvale to the south) or live in an area where an outbreak has occurred or live in a First Nations community. Horticultural events postponed TWO key events celebrating the region’s thriving horticultural industries have been postponed due to the COVID-19 health pandemic. FNQ Growers has postponed its prestigious annual gala dinner, due to take place in September this year, until 2021. The 2019 event was a resounding success with more than 400 people gathering to celebrate the industry and recognise the Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year. Chair Joe Moro said while the postponement was disappointing, it was necessary in light of the current pandemic. FNQ Growers had also planned a new agricultural research and development field day in July this year, but a decision had been made to postpone this event for a date in 2022, Mr Moro said. “This event is intended to be biennial, so the postponement will push out the first event to 2022 so not to impact on the Rotary FNQ Field Days next year,” Mr Moro said. “FNQ Growers is committed to continuing to provide opportunities for our growers to benefit from research and development, and for our industry as a whole to celebrate our success.”

Visas extended for farmworkers

DUE to recent COVID-19 lockdowns and travel laws, local farmers were finding it hard to find backpackers to work on their farms during the busy picking season. To help, the Federal Government has announced temporary changes to visa arrangements to help farmers access the workforce they need. The changes allow those within the Pacific Labour Scheme, Seasonal Worker Program and working holidaymakers to continue to work in agriculture and food processing until the coronavirus crisis has passed. FNQ Growers President, Joe Moro, has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement allowing international workers to continue to work in agriculture until the coronavirus crisis has passed. Mr Moro said FNQ Growers had lobbied strongly to have visas extended for those international workers currently on farms in the horticultural industry and that the announcement was good news for the region. “During peak harvest seasons in the region, seasonal workers and backpackers comprise some 20 per cent of the workforce, while working visa holders up to 50 per cent,” Mr Moro said.

“While we continue to confront challenging times as the pandemic evolves, we applaud the Federal Government’s decision which gives our horticultural growers some security for future farm labour needs in the months ahead. “As is expected, employers and employees will need to abide by some conditions moving forward, however, these measures are designed at managing our labour force and protecting our regional communities.” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the changes were good for business. “We can’t afford to see fruit rotting on trees and vines and vegetables left unpicked. It is vital our farmers maximise their hard work and economic returns,” Minister McCormack said. “We are acting to enable seasonal workers to extend their stay and remain lawfully in Australia until they can return to their home countries. “The agriculture sector relies on an ongoing workforce and we are committed to providing the means for that to continue while ensuring strict health and safety measures are adhered to,

including visa holders following self-isolation requirements when they move between regions." Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud said workforce requirements for agriculture change within and across states as different crops are ready for harvest. “It is essential for our food security that workers can move to meet these seasonal labour needs,” Minister Littleproud said. "At the same time it is critical we manage this labour force to support the on-going health of

regional communities." The government also announced tough new rules to ensure that COVID-19 is not transported to regional and rural communities. Before moving to other parts of the country, working holidaymakers will now need to selfisolate for 14 days and register at the Australia.gov.au website. Those who do not face having their visas cancelled. The conditions under the Seasonal Worker Programme and Pacific Labour Scheme visa arrangements will be carried over to the new visa arrangements.

 Seasonal Worker Programme and Pacific Labour Scheme workers can extend their stay for up to 12 months to work for approved employers.  Approved employers under the Seasonal Worker Programme and Pacific Labour Scheme will need to continue engaging with the Department of Education, Skills and Employment on labour market testing to ensure recruitment of Australians first.  Working Holiday Makers (WHMs) who work in agriculture or food processing will be exempt from the six month work limitation with the one employer and eligible for a further visa to keep working in these critical sectors if their current visa is due to expire in the next six months.  Conditions will be placed upon visa holders to self-isolate for 14 days before taking up employment in a different region. To support implementation of the self-isolation arrangements, the government is working with states and territories on enforcement and sanction mechanisms.  Employers will need to commit to providing safe accommodation for agricultural workers that complies with social distancing requirements.  Arrangement will also need to be in place for a declaration between employers and employees that all protocols necessary to ensure human health and accommodation requirements have been met.

Face masks take off for local designer

Milva Carucci of Milva Carucci Designs has revamped her business and adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WITH races, formals, weddings and just about every special occasion cancelled due to COVID-19, local designer Milva Carucci turned her sewing skills to good use. Better known for her one off custom made outfits, Milva Carucci Designs has now started making face masks. What started off small, has now snowballed into a fulltime passion after the support from the community and a large order from a company. “The demand grew and the response was positive and people were so grateful and commendable in providing such a service for our community,” Milva said. “I have had existing clients from my custom made dresses from outer state support me in purchasing them.” Milva has been making facemasks for over two weeks now from her leftover stash of cotton fabric and offcuts and has posted them as far as Melbourne and Sydney. Milva wants to remind people that they are not medical grade face masks. They are made for elderly people who want to quickly go up

to the shops or the chemist. “It’s to stop people buying the medical-grade face masks who may not need them.” she said. “It gives them a sense of security. I also sell shopping trolley covers that people can put on the handles of the trolleys at the supermarket.” So far she estimates has sold over 350 masks for $10 each. “The dressmaking has come to a complete stop with zero money now coming in. So at the moment, I’m trying whatever I can to sustain some income.” “I didn’t think it would take off, people are grateful that they can get face masks locally. “People have been really grateful and luckily for me due to the current situation I can still create.” Milva also makes face masks to order “Some people want a funky animal or floral print,” she said “Some nurses have asked for the brighter the better as it makes a talking point with their patients. “It’s so rewarding to be able to be versatile with a skill you have and to help beat this epidemic.” For more information visit www.milvacaruccidesigns.com.au

Hospital Foundation calls on community for support THE Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation is asking for donations to purchase equipment for the Mareeba Hospital that could help save lives affected by COVID-19. Hospitals in the Cairns and Hinterland region have all re-

leased a list of equipment that would help save lives for patients affected by COVID-19. The emergency ventilation equipment adds up to $290 000, which is a substantial amount of money. Mareeba Friends of the

Hospital Foundation Chair Neil Setford said. “If things go wrong, it’s better to be looking at the equipment, than looking for it.” “In this sort of situation, success is if we never need to use the equipment,” he said.

“The emergency ventilation equipment is used to help people affected by COVID-19 and keep them alive. “The most important thing people can do now is, wash your hands, practise social distancing, and stay home unless

Don’t be scammed

SCAMMERS are now trying to exploit Australians financially impacted by the COVID-19 crisis with new superannuation scams being reported to Scamwatch. Scammers are now trying to take advantage of the Government’s recent announcement that people suffering financial hardship can have partial access to their superannuation from midApril. “Scammers are cold-calling people claiming to be from organisations that can help you get early access to your super,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said. “For most people, outside of their home, superannuation is their greatest asset and you can’t be too careful about protecting it.” “The Australian Taxation Office is coordinating the early release of super through myGov and there is no need to involve a third party or pay a fee to get access under this scheme.” “Never follow a hyperlink to reach the myGov website. Instead, you should always type the full name of the website into your browser yourself,” Ms Rickard said. Since the Government’s announcement in March, there have been 87 reports of these scams, but no reported losses. In most cases the scammers are seeking to obtain personal information, including information that will help them fraudulently access the victim’s superannuation funds. “While older people are more commonly affected by superannuation scams, the new earlyaccess scheme means a range of age groups are now experiencing these scams,” Ms Rickard said. “We also have reports of scammers offering to check if a person’s super account is eligible for various benefits or claiming the new scheme will lock people out of their accounts.” “Never give any information about your superannuation to someone who has contacted you. Don’t let them try to pressure you to make a decision immediately, take your time and consider who you might be dealing with.” “Be wary of callers who claim to be from a government authority asking about your super. Hang up and call the organisation directly by doing an independent search for their contact details,” Ms Rickard said. If you have provided information about your superannuation to a scammer, immediately contact your superannuation institution. If you have provided personal or banking details, you should also contact your financial institution. How does COVID-19 spread and how can you stop from getting it? VIRUSES are tiny organisms that live inside hosts, when you have a viral infection like influenza or coronavirus COVID-19), it means that the virus is living inside your body.

How does COVID-19 spread from person to person? Like any living organism, viruses like to multiply and spread to make sure they’ll survive. COVID-19 spreads from person to person through droplets that an infected person sneezes or coughs out. These droplets carrying COVID-19 can enter your body through the mucous membranes (wet parts) of your face – your eyes, nose and mouth – which provide a direct pathway to your throat and lungs. The good news is that it can’t get in through other parts of your body like

your skin or your hair, but you might be surprised just how easy it can get to the mucous membranes of your face. First of all, the droplets from someone’s cough or sneeze might fall directly into your eyes, nose or mouth if you’re close enough to the infected person, letting the virus enter your system straight away. Or, the droplets might fall onto a surface where you then put your hands. If you don’t wash your hands, you could move the virus into your eyes, nose or mouth and become infected. The infected person might also get the droplets on their hands if they cough or sneeze into them, and then place them on a surface, where you pick them up.

You should also try not to touch your face. This can be harder than it sounds because we naturally touch our faces often. If someone is sick and coughing or sneezing, you should try to stand 1.5 metres away from them, to stop any droplets getting into your system. How far is 1.5 metres? It’s about the length of a shopping trolley. People who are sick, with any kind of virus, are being asked to stay at home when they’re unwell so they don’t cough or sneeze any droplets onto other people or surfaces others might touch. Follow the rules and stay informed QUEENSLAND health announced a new range of measures aimed at halting the spread of COVD-19. These rules replace the previous rules that were announced in March. Along with enforcing the two-person limit, residents are now only allowed to leave their home for one of eight essential reasons. These are: • Obtaining food or other essential goods or services • Obtaining medical treatment or other healthcare services • Engaging in physical exer-

member of the person’s family • Attending any court of Australia or to comply with or give effect to orders of the court • Attending a childcare facility, school, university or other educational institution, to the extent care or instruction cannot reasonably be obtained in the person’s principal place of residence There are also now restrictions on the gathering of more than two people. This applies in public areas but exempts members of the same household. This means if someone

leaves their house for an essential reason, such as exercise, they can be joined by only one other person or the members of their household. Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, said that inside a person’s home they’re allowed to have all the members of the household and two guests. The Premier said this amendment was intended to help families who may not all live in the same home to stay connected and those who live alone are now allowed to have one or two social guests.

Queensland Health clarified the Premiers announcement with a written statement. “A person who leaves their principal place of residence for a permitted purpose may be accompanied by members of their household or, alternatively, by no more than one person who is not a member of their household. Examples of visitors – Family members and close friends.” Queensland police officers will be able to issue on-the-spot fines of $1,334.50 for individuals and $6,672.50 for corporations, who breach these laws.

New Commonwealth legislation to protect the Cape from coronavirus came into force on 26 March 2020. This law was introduced to assist in the protectoin of remote Cape communities, including the whole of Cook Shire, from the COVID-19 pandemic. Queensland Police, in coordination with Local Disaster Management Groups and Commonwealth Biosecurity Officers are implementing the law. Permit applications and forms are no longer required, reviewed or assessed. If you are not conducting an essential activity, as listed in the legislation available on our website, you will need to demonstrate you: • Have been isolated from the general public for 14 days before entry into the Shire; • Have not shown signs and symptoms of coronavirus; and • Have not been exposed to the virus or to someone with symptoms of coronavirus. The Queensland Police are responsible for strictly assessing eligibility for entry based on the criteria contained

in the legislation. Police will be stationed at the Control Point on the Mulligan Highway, as well as airports and sea ports. For those travelling from Cook Shire into neighbouring shires such as Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal or Weipa, there are entry restrictions in place for those shires. ▶ 3 tsp dried yeast ▶ 2 tbls caster sugar ▶ 160ml warm water ▶ 275g plain flour ▶ 1 tsp salt ▶ 30g butter, melted ▶ 125ml warm milk

1. Whisk yeast, sugar and the water together until yeast dissolves. Stand in a warm place for 10 minutes or until mixture is frothy. 2. Sift flour and salt into a large bowl; stir in butter, milk and yeast mixture to a soft dough. Knead dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes or until dough is smooth and elastic. Place dough into an oiled large bowl. Cover and stand in a warm place for 1 hour/ until dough has doubled in size. 3. Preheat oven to 200°C. Oil a bread tin. 4. Knead dough on a floured surface until smooth. Divide dough in half. Roll each half into a ball; place side-by-side in bread tin. Dust with a little extra flour. Cover; stand in a warm place for 20 minutes or until dough has risen. 5. Bake bread for 45 minutes or until it sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack.

Looking for some fun, fresh ideas to keep the kids occupied at home these school holidays? Now, more importantly than ever, it is so important that we are all playing our part and staying home except for essential trips as specified by the Queensland and Federal Governments. Here is a fun and simple art and craft project you can do from home with minimal supplies.

Ingredients 1 cup flour 2 tsp cream of tartar 1/2 cup salt 1 tbsp cooking oil 1 cup water food coloring

Method 1.In a large bowl, combine all of your dry ingredients (flour, salt, cream of tartar) and mix well. 2. Mix food coloring with your water first. Then add the vegetable oil and water with food coloring to a large pot. Mix together. 3. Add the dry ingredients to your pot and mix well. 4. Cook over low to medium heat until the dough starts to form and becomes dry. 5. Once it starts to form a ball together and looks fully cooked, take off the heat. Let the dough cool first before touching. 6. Once cool, knead the dough for 5 minutes to make the dough soft, continue needing until it is soft. 7. Let the kids at it! Once they are finished playing, place they playdough in zip lock bags and store in the fridge.

And now for some good news

My heart genuinely goes out to people who have lost their jobs and livelihoods and I hope government subsidies are helping you through this challenging time. But there seem to be some positives to the current COVID-19 epidemic. I’ve been surprised at how many people I’ve seen going for a walk past my house either with their dog or with their kids on bikes or even with their partner. And they’re talking, no phones, no social media updates, just good old-fashioned talking to each other. I went for a walk this morning and every person I passed not only gave me a one and a half metre buffer, but they also said good morning. We are now seeing fewer cars on the road as more people work from home and tougher restrictions are announced for public gatherings. Experts are saying that air pollution and carbon emission levels are on the way down due to the restrictions imposed on us. Footage released in March by the European Space Agency shows China and Italy have seen drops in pollution levels since they went into lockdown. Residents in northern India have been left in complete awe by their new view. The snow-capped Himalayas are now visible for the first time in 30 years. The beautiful mountains are 200kms away but have not been visible for decades due to high pollution levels. Animals have started creeping back into urban areas due to the lack of road traffic. Apart from toilet paper,

there are a few other items that have been quietly flying off the shelves, including, slow cookers, bread makers and pasta makers. People are now spending more time in their kitchen cooking real food rather than getting takeaway Big Macs or a bucket from The Colonel. Another big seller has been seeds, potting mix and garden beds, as people start growing their own food again. Police have also reported that crime is down. While I sympathise with people who have lost their jobs working in pubs and clubs, there must be a sigh of relief from people who are addicted to poker machines. How many times have we said in our life “I have no time”? With the current lockdown, we do have more time, more time for family, exercise and hobbies. Now is the perfect time to cross that new year’s resolution off your bucket list. Write a book, paint, ride a bike, volunteer, plant a garden, skype that friend who lives overseas. Our national parks are still open, go for a walk, go for a long walk, so long in fact that the nearest person to you is 1.5 kilometres away, not 1.5 metres. People who are stuck at home are recording music, taking photos and unleashing their creative side. Maybe COVID-19 doesn’t have to be about getting sick, maybe it should be about getting healthy. We are washing our hands more and watching out for each other, and that can only be good news.

IN regards to the article on the 27 new employees in Coles. I had been a chef in Cairns and knew that we would be closing, so therefore had applied with Coles Mareeba. However I had not got any response. As far as I can see, they had employed family members of current staff. Opportunity for new councils

There is an excellent opportunity right now for all of the newly elected shire councils in Queensland to do something positive for their constituents, in regard to the panic buying of essentials, that is leaving many people without. Councils should consider the bulk buying of these essentials (toilet paper, rice, flour, pasta, cleaning products etc), and storing them in the warehouses that are currently vacant in their towns. None of these products require refrigeration. These products could then be sold to legitimate citizens of the shire/ town on a ration basis. These items could be sold at a few cents above the prices at the local supermarkets so that

the councils could cover costs, and the goods could be sold through the council offices or designated shop fronts in the towns. This would then not be taking business away from the supermarkets, people could still buy from there if they so choose, but this would ensure that everyone had a fair chance to buy essential products. It would also give property owners who live in remote areas and only visit the major centers a few times a year a chance to replenish their pantries. Three days later I got an email to tell me that a Return Authority had been approved and to return the TV to the retailer for refund. Racing moves to designated regions RACING Queensland (RQ) is doing all it can to help stop the spread of COVID-19. In a bid to further quarantine the industry from the current pandemic RQ has introduced new designated racing regions, limiting the amount of courses available for races. The decision splits Queensland into eight different regions, with each region being separate and exclusive to one another, meaning no horses can travel to a different region to race. Trainers and stable staff are also under the same restrictions and are not permitted to travel to a different region for race purposes. As part of the decision, thoroughbred racing will be consolidated to 15 racetracks and jockeys will be permitted to race in one of the five designated regions. Mareeba Turf Club President Rex Petersen is disappointed about the northern region only having Cairns and Townsville races. “It’s going to be a huge loss for racing,” he said.

“Cairns and Townsville will be the only two places racing in the northern region. “We can’t do anything at the club at the moment including venue hire.” This news is a big blow to the Mareeba Turf club and Tableland residents as racing may not return to the region for some time. Funding relief has been released by Racing Queensland with $2.4 million being available to TAB clubs in the short term. Racing Queensland has released $1.8 million in immediate cash flow relief and will provide a further $600,000 in emergency support for its clubs until the end of the financial year. Racing Queensland is currently assessing the financial impact of COVID-19 on its racing clubs and will release further funding announcements when the report is finished. Mareeba had three race days scheduled for 2020 – Anzac Day on April 25, the Mareeba Annuals on September 5 and the Boxing Day races.

PCYC launches new stay at home fitness program

PCYC Queensland has launched a new online fitness and workout program called Active8, which members can access from the comfort of their own homes. The Active8 program was devised by PCYC Queensland fitness professionals and includes high intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts, nutritional advice, exercise tips, healthy recipes and more, delivered online via weekly emails. The program is completely free and is available for the entire community to sign up and keep fit and healthy at home. Mareeba PCYC Branch Manager Mary-Anne West is encouraging people to get involved in the program. “It’s a great way to stay healthy and fit while stuck at home,” she said. “It’s an easy program to follow and is loads of fun.” PCYC Queensland CEO Phil Schultz said that due to unprecedented changes in society

caused by COVID-19, people’s health and wellbeing and connection to community has become more important than ever. “The impact that COVID-19 has had, and continues to have, on all our lives is extraordinary,” he said. “During this challenging and isolating time, Activ8 @home provides an essential way for the community to remain connected, fit and healthy. “For this reason, PCYC Queensland has made the program free and available to the entire community and people are already positively supporting and interacting with one another which is great.” More than 1,100 members have already joined the Active8 program from across Queensland.
