New business venture grows during COVID

WHEN one door closes, another one opens. For one local business woman the crisis of COVID-19 saw her new business go from strength to strength.

Before COVID Angela Nason specialised in home made earrings through her business – ANason’s Creations – but when markets closed across the region that business came to a grinding halt. Around the same time her father’s lime and dragon fruit farm also suffered a dramatic decrease in sales due to COVID. The entrepreneurial spirit of the Mareeba mum of three

kicked in and her new business ‘Tablelands to Tabletop’ was born.

“I started trying to sell some of my dad’s fruit on Facebook, then all of sudden it became a regular weekly occurrence and then a lot more farmers reached out asking me to sell their produce,” said Mrs Nason.

“Then more friends ordered food and more farmers approached me to sell their stock.”

In the past eight weeks the business has snowballed so much that Angela now has over 25 local farmers supplying produce and more than 200 customers who order

regularly, with about 50 to 60 orders being delivered per week.

Angela said she is bringing together struggling Tableland farmers with consumers right across Far North Queensland.

“We are now delivering from Thursday Island to Atherton and we have expanded our range to include, avocadoes, tomatoes, berries bananas , pumpkins, capsicum, passionfruit, strawberries, eggs, sweet potatoes, eggplant and honey,” Angela said.

Customers order via the website what they want or they can order a pre-prepared mixed box.

as we pick up from our farmers on Wednesday and then we deliver on Thursday and Friday,” she said.

“When buying from the big supermarkets, fruit and vegetables can be two to four weeks old, we turn it around really quick. It also saves on transport costs, rather than sending fruit all the way down south, just to turn it around and drive it all the way back again.

“We also supply our fruit and veg without plastic packaging.”

Angela said that the new business has surpassed her other jewellery business and that she won’t be returning to

the markets anytime soon, but people can still buy her jewellery online.

“I have had to convert my car port into a packing station – we can do up to a hundred boxes there.

“But soon we are going to have to look at expanding into some sort of warehouse to work from and I have also hired a driver to deliver my boxes.

“We are also now looking for someone to supply us onions and greens like bok choy and broccoli.”

2020 scarecrow festival cancelled The Tolga Scarecrow Festival that was planned for October this year has been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Tolga Scarecrow Festival has been running for many years and is an event that many people across the tablelands

mark on their calendars and look forward too.

With the restriction on gatherings for over 100 people to be ticketed and seated with no movement the decision was made to cancel the 2020 Tolga Scarecrow Festival.

This was a tough decision to make by the committee who stated “The Tolga Scarecrow Festival as we have planned with excitement and anticipation will not be able to go ahead.”

“Based on all the information currently at hand the Tolga

Scarecrow Festival will be postponed to 2021,” they said.

“The public has been totally supportive of this decision and have responded positively and understand our aim of ensuring community safety.

“We have received many

messages and emails of support from community members.”

The festival committee plans to get a head start on next year’s event by scheduling their first meeting in January to start planning for the 2021 festival.

Show fun returns

With the school holidays coming to an end, the Atherton Showgrounds is bringing a new showtime experience to the region this weekend with an all new mini pop-up show

THREE days of showtime fun of a different kind is set for this weekend.

With the region slowly coming out of COVID-19 restrictions, the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society have announced the introduction of a mini pop-up show this weekend at the Atherton Showgrounds.

Atherton Show Society Event Co-ordinator, Kylie Lang said that with the kids on school holidays at the moment, parents may be looking for unique ways to entertain their children.

“Due to COVID-19 this is a way for communities to enjoy a scale backed show experience and help the travelling show people,” said Ms Lang.

The mini pop up show kicks off this Friday, July 10 at 10am and runs through to 4pm on Sunday, July 12 with free entry for all.

At the end of March this year the Management Committee made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Atherton Show due to the COVID-19 situation.

Ms Lang said that it was great that they could return all the usual show attractions.

“Brophys Amusements will be supplying sideshow alley and rides. There will also fairy floss, dagwood dogs and lots of yummy food,” she said.

“We will also have all the popular showbags like Frozen,

Avengers and Batman and other vendors there as well.”

In lieu of one big Atherton Show, Ms Lang says there’s going to be a few pop-up shows spread throughout the rest of the year.

“In a few weeks we could have another amusement provider coming through town, so we are hoping we can do this again.”

They are also planning on doing deconstructed shows over the next few months, where they will be able to run the normal agricultural and animal competitions.

“We’ve already had the kid’s online competitions for arts and crafts and the kid’s agriculture section is being judged this week,” said Ms Lang.

“We are looking at doing our seniors agriculture competition in September so that they can bring in their displays and we can have an exhibition then.

“We are also hoping to have our cattle displays soon and the rest of the animal displays will be rolled out in stages.”

As well as the rides, this Sunday will be extra special Ms Lang said.

“This Sunday we also have the Atherton indoor markets on as well as the show attractions,” “I’m looking forward to all the attractions coming back to Atherton this weekend and I really want a dagwood dog.”

Blockchain irrigation one step closer LAST week farmers and irrigators from across the Tablelands met at the Jackaroo Motel in Mareeba to hear how blockchain water trading could work and possibly bring the price of water down.

The pilot project is using technology developed by Australian company Civic Ledger and is funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA).

Blockchain allows for water to be bought and sold from person A to person B in a way that was visible to everyone in the market.

Chief executive officer and co-founder of Civic Ledger, Katrina Donaghy said “that the technology will make it easier for irrigators to trade water between themselves allowing for better utilisation of the water that is available.”

Last week Ms Donaghy and her team were in Far North Queensland to launch phase two of the project. This involved engaging with irrigators and other stakeholders to seek feedback on the Water Ledger platform.

The meetings will help with technical research undertaken

by Griffith University on the Gold Coast and also the RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub in Melbourne.

The insights will then be shared with the Project Review Group which includes the CRC for Developing Northern Australia, FNQ Growers, SunWater and the Department of Natural

Resources, Mines and Energy.

The CRCNA's CEO Jed Matz said the pilot research project would involve the participation of irrigators across the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland in a demonstration of digital blockchain technology.

“The project team will work with stakeholders including irrigators to help them understand how blockchain and smart contracts work and how they may help them save money and improve their decision-making by allowing them to access near-real-time water trading information,” he said.

“We hope through accessing and using the technology platform, irrigators will provide feedback to help improve the technology and the adoption of Civic Ledger's Water Ledger platform.”

FNQ Growers Chairman Joe Moro said that blockchain technology was a way to add transparency to water trading in the region.

“In the Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation area there is some water trading going on but it's an experiment, in a sense that the information isn't available, people don't know who wants to sell or who wants to buy,” he said.

“This technology would make clear what's available from whom and what is the price.”

Independent puts her hand up for Cook ANOTHER candidate has put their name up to run for the seat of Cook in the upcoming Queensland state elections in October.

Cairns resident, Yodie Batzke, has announced that she will be running as an independent against Labor incumbent Cynthia Lui for the seat of Cook come poll time.

Ms Batzke came to attention to Far North residents when she ran as a senate candidate for Clive Palmers United Australia Party in the 2019 federal election.

Ms Batzke also ran as a Division 4 candidate in the 2020 Cairns council elections and also as an independent for the federal seat of Leichhardt in 2010 federal election.

Ms Batzke says she has family ties to Torres Strait and Cape York and is a is a Traditional Owner from the Wuthati tribe on Cape York “I was part of the traditional owner group that was involved with native title and I’ve always had a desire to run for the seat of Cook,” she said.

“Cook is where my heart is, this is my backyard. It’s always been a passion of mine, to see community needs being met.”

“As an independent I see it as important that we have a seat at the table, we have so much on offer here, but we are always left behind.”

Even though she has had several shots at running for government in Cairns, Ms Batzke claims that after being brought up on Thursday Island she is passionate about issues facing the residents in Cook.

“One of the key issues facing Cook at the moment is water security from provision, to infrastructure, to farmers needs and water quality – they all need to be addressed,” she said.

“There is a lot of untapped potential in Cook that needs to be championed and we need to have a representative at the table that is not going to be bullied by party politics.”

Ms Batzke also said that if she was voted in she would base herself with an office in Mareeba.

“It’s a no brainer considering that for a lot of cape communities, Mareeba is the first point of call,” she said.

“The only time people from the Cape or TI to Cairns is for health or family reasons, they come to Mareeba for shopping or services.

“I firmly believe that the office should be relocated back into Mareeba.”

More funding needed to combat waterway weed

BY PHIL BRANDEL IN the June 17 issue of The Express we reported that the Atherton and Granite creeks were being chocked by Amazon Frogbit an invasive weed from South America.

We can now reveal that the Muluridji Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) have also been fighting a losing battle with the weed.

The MAC have been working at the top of Atherton Creek removing weeds for the past month after receiving $20,000 in funding with the help of Federal Member Bob Katter to remove the weeds from the creek.

Traditional owner and Muluridji Elder Rhonda Dooley, said the funding hasn’t gone far enough.

“We only had enough money to work for about 4 weeks, that hasn’t made a big impact on the weed eradication,” she said.

“Water is so important to us, we employed three people to work 8 hours day and with the equipment we needed the money didn’t go very far.”

Ms Dooley said that MAC received $50,000, three to four

years ago but the weeds have grown back since then.

“We need to have more money to continue, it’s a full time job and the weed will never be fully eradicated,” “You start removing the weeds at one end, and by the time you get to the other end it’s started growing again.”

Ms Dooley also admits that it’s been difficult getting workers as lots of people don’t want to be neck deep in cold water for eight hours a day.

“We need more money to keep it going; we are hoping to have meetings with Bob Katter and Cynthia Lui try to get funding to employ people full time to make a real dent on the spread of the weed,” she said.

“We need support from all the stakeholders as it’s also spread to the Granite and Atherton creeks, the Mitchell River, the Barron and Lake Tinaroo.”

MAC estimates they need about $500,000 to tackle the problem fulltime for at least three years to get the job done.

Robert Reid, who lives on Atherton Creek, has been trying to get the attention of several government departments about

the problem without much luck for several years now.

Recently Mr Reid sat down with Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin and several other council representatives to discuss the problem.

“I believe that council is now taking the matter seriously and I hope lots of people are now going to hear about this,” he said.

“I’ve been to Bob Katter’s office and I’m hoping we can get a meeting with Bob, we have also been trying to get a meeting with local state member Cynthia Lui, as we want more action from the member for Cook regarding this problem.

“We need to fix this now, it’s an environmental hazard and the weed is spreading. Everybody is throwing their hands in the air, saying not our problem.”

A Mareeba Shire Council spokesperson said that “Council is providing letters of support to Muluridj for funding to continue the good work they have been doing.”

“Furthermore, Council is urging the State Government to

declare frogbit as an invasive plant.”

GETTING BACK TO NORMAL: Nuggett Miller and Clay Lingard enjoyed a beer at the Graham Hotel in Mareeba on Friday after stage 3 restrictions were lifted.

QLD restrictions eased FRIDAY saw stage 3 restrictions lifted across Queensland, finally allowing residents to stand at the bar to order a beer and to be able to have up to 100 people at a wedding or a funeral.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced earlier this week that stage 3 restrictions would be lifted one week earlier than expected.

“Queenslanders’ continued efforts in uniting against COVID-19 means restrictions can ease a week earlier than expected,” the Premier said.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles said “From July 3, more people will be allowed in more places and

to attend more events.”

New stage 3 measures include allowing – private gatherings up from 20 to 100 people in homes, wedding and funerals (includes receptions), contact indoor and outdoor community sport can start with an approved plan and indoor sport can have one person per four square metres.

Events of more than 10,000 people require a COVID Safe Event Plan approved by the Chief Health Officer and stadiums can have up to 25,000 people or 50 per cent capacity whichever number is smaller.

Additional venues such as casinos, nightclubs and food courts also reopened under stage

“The four square metre rule per customer applies across the board with no ceiling, and no need to divide customers into smaller groups,” Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles said.

“For small businesses, we will relax the four square metre rules, allowing up to 50 customers for a venue below 200 square metres in size, provided they keep a register of customers. For example, a 100 square metre café can currently have 25 patrons, with five of them in a separate area; now they can have up to 50 patrons.”

Cape opens up

Businesses in Cooktown and Cape York have welcomed the easing of restrictions that saw travel to the region banned since the COVID-19 crisis began

TRAVEL to Cooktown and most parts of Cape York is now finally allowed, with further restrictions easing this Friday, July 10.

It was welcome news for Cooktown Shire Mayor Peter Scott who said that access into Cooktown was something that was long overdue.

“We have been lobbying very hard for this through our chamber of commerce and through various ministers,” Mayor Scott said.

“We are glad that they are opening a week early so that we can get a bit of school holiday business up here for our tourism operators.”

Queensland's Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Mr Craig Crawford said that there had been no cases of COVID-19 in any of the state's remote Indigenous communities which meant the roadblocks could be

removed.

“Some of the communities are very concerned about getting COVID-19 into their area, and we accept that,” he said.

“We are working with them and doing what we need to do to maintain safety, but road blocks at this stage would not be something that we would be looking at.

“Were we to get a second wave, it may lead to us having to invoke further restrictions further afield, but there is no indication of that.”

While most communities on Cape York have decided to remove their lockdowns in line with the state's easing restrictions, several communities have delayed their re-opening until Friday June 10.

Access to the tip of Cape York is still restricted, with the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council choosing to stay

in lockdown.

Weipa, Mapoon, Lockhart River, Cape Tribulation and the Daintree are open.

Minister Craig Crawford, said anyone planning to visit Indigenous communities should contact councils first.

“You can't compare what we experienced to what people experienced in the remote communities where they were essentially confined to their houses – very stressful time,” he said.

Wayne Butcher, Mayor of Lockhart River, has said that he was concerned about the opening being moved forward.

“I've got second thoughts about opening up the Cape now,” Cr Butcher told the ABC. “I would've preferred if Queensland would've delayed opening the border for another couple of weeks… I think the risk is just too high.”

Mareeba Shire re-signs as reef guardians

MAREEBA Shire Council has become the first Far Northern Council to sign up for another term as a Reef Guardian Council.

The Reef Guardian Council program enlists the help of local councils that use and rely on the Reef or its catchment for recreation or business and helps to build a healthier and more resilient Reef.

18 councils across the eastern Queensland coast all work together to protect and conserve the reef using coordinated effort from industries, communities and all levels of government.

Mareeba Shire has become the first of 18 councils to sign up for another term of Reef protection and Mayor Angela Toppin said the Council is committed to taking practical, on ground action to help the world renowned reef.

“While we do not live right beside the reef, this global icon still plays a very important role in the lives of our residents,” she said.

“Many of our residents live in the Barron River catchment and what we do on land can have a direct impact on the reef.

“It is important that we build reef health so it is in the best possible condition to cope with the impacts like the mass coral bleaching events we have witnessed in recent years.”

MSC has achieved many activities over the years as a Reef Guardian Council including a Waste Management Services Strategy which addresses littering and illegal dumping, a masterplan to revitalise the Bicentennial Lakes and an upgraded sewer pump station in Kuranda to reduce the risk of pollution entering the Great Barrier Reef.

Park Authority’s Assistant Director for Regional Engagement Doon McColl was delighted that MSC had signed up to the stewardship program for another four years.

“Over the previous term we built a strong relationship and delivered some great initiatives that help both the reef and our catchment communities,” she said.

“By working together we harness the power of collective action and we expect at least 18 local governments in the Reef catchment will sign up to be reef Guardians for the next four years.

“These councils are keen to empower their communities to make a difference, it’s a very important and powerful message to send to the rest of Australia and the world.”

Community feedback wanted on proposed new windfarm THE latest wind farm slated for construction on the Tablelands is now asking for feedback from the public with the reopening of their information centre.

In the coming weeks RATCH-Australia will submit a development application to build and run 18 turbines on land 13km north of Ravenshoe just off Tumoulin Road at Evelyn and they are now asking for final submissions from the public.

RATCH have also reopened the project’s information centre at 55 Grigg Street, Ravenshoe after closing it due to social distancing requirements The centre will now be

open between 2pm and 5pm every Wednesday throughout the project’s development.

According to RATCH “Wind turbines in this location would be capable of generating approximately enough electricity to supply around 30,000 homes on average.”

Ratch is also hoping contractors will touch base with them to offer their services.

“There would also be opportunities for local businesses to win valuable contracts and for local people to secure jobs. Businesses can register their interest now and will be contacted if the project enters construction.”

Project Manager Terry Johannesen, said, “We have

been conducting studies over a number of years which have confirmed that we can design a wind farm capable of producing a significant amount of safe, clean, reliable power while minimising the impacts on the local environment.” he said “We appreciate that people may have further questions so I’m pleased that our drop-in centre is open again so that people can come in and have an informal conversation with our team.”

Mr Johannesen also said that RATCH are planning on having a community development fund worth $75,000 per year to support local projects and initiatives if the project is

built.

“Ideas for how the $75,000 per year Community Fund could operate are especially welcome.”

Ratch already own and operate several windfarms on the Tablelands including the Mount Emerald Wind Farm between Atherton and Mareeba and Queensland’s oldest wind farm at Windy Hill, outside Ravenshoe.

Chemical waste contaminates council treatment plants THE Mareeba Shire Council is calling on residents to watch what you toss after several council treatment plants were contaminated by chemical waste.

The illegal dumping of chemicals like solvents, fuel oils, pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers that are poured down the drain can cause major contamination of sewers and compromise the efficiency of council wastewater treatment plants.

These treatment plants are used to remove hazardous materials that pose threats to residents and can negatively impact their health.

By dumping chemicals in the wrong way the integrity of these treatment plants and adversely residents’ health can be put at risk.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin is calling for residents to watch what they pour down their drains.

“We are aware of two occasions over the last month where discharges to the sewer have caused the bugs to die at our wastewater treatment plants,” she said.

“If you are starting your business back up and discharging wastewater to the sewer please check that you have a trade waste approval.

“People who do the wrong thing will face large fines so if you’re unsure about how to correctly and safely dispose of hazardous substances, please get into contact with council.”

Council has in place a process of trade waste approvals for a range of activities and businesses such as laundries, hairdressers and restaurants.

If waste is disposed of in compliance with these approvals no harm should come to the biological process occurring at the treatment plants.

TERRAIN NRM and the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) have joined forces to restore a degraded creek reserve near Ravenshoe.

The land at South Cedar Creek is undergoing a transformation by removing guinea grass and lantana, and planting hundreds of native trees.

More than 1000 native trees went into the ground recently marking the start of the fouryear restoration program.

Tablelands Regional Council’s Kylie Freebody said the land was in Marshall Park reserve near the top of Tully Falls Rd, and the focus was on restoring wet sclerophyll forest.

“This country is really important for quite a few species that are listed as ‘vulnerable’, as well as three endangered eco-systems,’’ she said. “We’re looking to help species like the yellow-bellied glider, greater glider, magnificent brood frog, Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo and tapping green-eyed frog.

“This land is considered an important linkage for biodiversity conservation but over the

years it has been taken over by invasive weeds.”

Ms Freebody is looking forward to measuring the changes.

“There will be more treeplanting next wet season, for now we’re in the maintenance stage,’’ she said. “By removing the invasive weed species, it gives native understorey herb and shrub species the chance to regenerate but you’ve really got to keep on top of it.

“It has been good to see the community getting behind this project too. A landholder across the creek has also cleaned up the weeds in the creek bank and allowed us to plant trees and we’re hoping to speak with other private landholders about planting trees.”

Malanda icon is set to close its doors

CLOSING DOWN: After more than 37 years, Rob Duncombe is calling it day and will close Malanda Hardware after being unsuccessful in finding a new owner for the business.

MALANDA Hardware is closing its doors after failing to sell to a new owner.

Owner Rob Duncombe said he is sad to be closing the business after 37 years of servicing Malanda and surrounds.

“I turned 77 a fortnight ago and I’ve been trying to sell the business for a few years now and we haven’t even had someone ask what the price is, so we have run out of options,” he said.

The last trading day will be September 9 and everything is now for sale including the shop fitting.

“All the stock has been heavily discounted to get rid of it before closing the doors,” said Mr

Duncombe.

Life in business all began 37 years ago for Rob and his family.

“We bought a small little hardware store in a little shop 37 years ago, and we have grown since then including into the igloo next door and then later on we bought Atherton Mitre 10.” he said “We are now past the point of selling the business because we’ve sold the building and we can’t reverse that decision now.

“It’s been in the hands of real estate agents for years and we have had signage out front and there’s just no interest.”

Rob said one of the reasons that people don’t want to get

into retail business is due to bricks and mortar stores not being able to compete with the internet.

“It’s a different world in retail and I can’t see it improving.

I think retail stores will reduce in size and numbers, if some of the big stores like Myers can’t make it work, then what chance is there for the little guy.”

Even though he is retiring Rob says he will still have plenty to do once the doors close.

“I’ve always been very active in the community. I’m a keen swimmer, I swim in a local training squad and I’ve also got my farm with my family.”

Graham Hartwig from Mareeba Iceworks has decided to call it a day after nearly 20 years in business.

ANOTHER local business has been forced to close its doors due the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mareeba Ice works have been standing on the corner of Hort and Walsh Streets in Mareeba for nearly 20 years.

Owner Graham Hartwig has been distributing milk and selling ice from the premises since 2002, but has now decided to shut up shop and call it a day “I started delivering milk in 1990, I stopped the milk run in February of this year, because I got sick of getting up at 2.45am each morning and because I’m getting on a bit,” he said.

“Then when the virus hit, ice

sales went down to nothing, I have been in this building since 2002 and its time for me to retire.

“I was already thinking about retiring and the virus forced my hand.”

Graham’s last sale was last Thursday, June 2, selling his last two bags of ice “After they went I just turned everything off.”

“I’ve sold most of the fridges and compressors and the rest is going to the tip.”

Another problem facing Grahams’s business is that people can buy ice just about anywhere.

“The bottleshops, the servos, the supermarkets, they all sell

ice and I was only selling a tiny bit of it,” he said.

Graham says times have changed from when he used to deliver milk direct to people houses.

“I stopped delivering to people’s houses over 10 years ago. When milk deregulation came along a lot of businesses stopped, I just kept going,” “I haven’t had a holiday for 30 years and I’m going to try and have a holiday and I’ve got family that I haven’t seen for 3040 years, so it’s time to go see them.”

OPEN: Federal MP Bob Katter opened his new office in Mareeba last week.

AFTER months of waiting and delays, Mr Katter’s new electorate office is now open for business at 143 Byrnes Street, Mareeba.

The office will be open from 8.30am to 5pm, 5 days a week and the office will be staffed fulltime by 1-2 local staff.

The new electorate office was announced in January of this year but due to COVID-19 and extended renovations, the official opening had been delayed.

At the time of announcing his new Mareeba office in January, The Federal Member said he was opening a new office in Mareeba to cut down on

his travel time “I travel over 45 hours per week, I can’t afford to take off 45 hours per week, it’s very ineffective” “Mareeba is the heartland of the Kennedy electorate and a new office will make it easier for me to meet with local business owners and have access to new business and government opportunities” Mr Katter said having an MP’s office in the town was “very important” and that he will be the only politician to have an office in Mareeba following Member for Cook Cynthia Lui’s shift to Cairns last year.

“This move has nothing to do

with Cynthia moving her office to Cairns, but if you think I’m not going to take advantage of that situation, then you believe in fairy tales.”

Mr Katter said there are three main reasons why he is opening an office in Mareeba.

“First it’s the heartland of the Kennedy Electorate, second if we get the balance of power in Queensland Parliament by taking Cook we can get more done and more money for the region, Third the development potential for Mareeba and surrounds is huge” The Federal Member also said that the demographics in the Kennedy electorate were changing, “While the population in places like Mt Isa and Charters Towers are shrinking, the Tablelands are growing.” he said “There are a hundred things that go wrong in Government, with banks and various other things, and regrettably due to my electorate being so huge, I am unable to personally handle them all. But the staff in the offices are in some ways actually the member of parliament themselves. My staff are very, very good. They are intelligent, and passionate about the region and handle all issues spectacularly.

“We’d have 10 or 20 people a day going through my Innisfail office and Mareeba being of a similar size we anticipate similar numbers.”

Victorians keen to stay on Tablelands

On Tuesday, June 30, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the reopening of the Queensland border to all Australians except Victorians, due to the sharp spike in COVID-19 infections in the suburbs of Melbourne.

But strangely enough, owners of Allumbah Pocket Cottages in Yungaburra, Melanie and Rob Van Haaren, said that even when the borders were still closed, Victorians were trying to book accommodation.

“People from Victoria were anticipating that the borders would reopen and I had a flood of phone calls from Victorians trying to book accommodation from July 7 onward,” she said.

“Two of them were very

suspicious because they wanted to book for 14 days and when I questioned them they flippantly told me that they would be in self-isolation.

“I got cold feet with allowing them to stay at my property no matter what they were willing to pay.”

Melanie said that while local business in Yungaburra were starting to get back on their feet, there was no way that she wanted to be complacent in doing something that could take the small village back to square one.

“Even if they were willing to quarantine I’m not willing to allow them to stay here, because how are they going to get here and support themselves, I would be part of the problem,” she said.

“I don’t shake hands, I strictly social distance and I feel that

I have a civic duty to ensure that I’m not passing on the virus.

“I’m not going to help someone ignore all the warnings and advice by saying come up from Victoria and stay.

“I’ve had 7-8 calls from Victoria, its cost me a lot of money to knock back those bookings.

“Sure I could do with cash, but it would cost me a lot more if our town was completely shut down like some of those suburbs in Melbourne.”

Melanie says that during the initial lockdowns, they had to cancel all their bookings.

“Since the easing of restrictions and the Premier saying travel in your own backyard we have certainly seen a difference in our bookings,” “We are feeling quite buoyant at the moment.”

Dr Angela and Dr Marika are now especially trained to meet the specific needs of rural and remote communities. Dr Marika has spent the past year at the Atherton Hospital and Dr Angela joined the hospital in April this year.

RECOGNISED: Member for Hill Shane Knuth presented Dale Roger-Jones with a certificate for 25-years as a Commissioner of Declarations.

Recognised for 25 years of JP service MALANDA resident, Dale Roger-Jones has been presented with a 25-year certificate, by Member for Hill Shane Knuth, for her distinguished service as a Commissioner for Declarations for the State of Queensland.

Miss Roger-Jones first became a JP in New South Wales.

“I became a Justice of the Peace in the 1960's to help other folk in my community,” Miss Roger-Jones said.

“So many people had government documents that they needed to be witnessed and signed.

“I became a JP so that I could help them as much as I could. At times I even helped them fill in forms, as long as it wasn’t anything to personal.

“When I moved to Queensland in 1978 I had to wait two years before I could become a

Queensland JP.” She said in 1980 she reapplied to become a JP and as time went on and the community started to rely on her less as a JP she became a CDEC. Mr Knuth said it was an honour to present Miss Roger-Jones with her 25-year certificate on behalf of the Attorney General.

“Dale is definitely a doer in our community with her past and present roles in the Malanda Theatre Company, Atherton Hospital Auxiliary, Malanda Ambulance Committee, Malanda Lioness Club, and the Atherton Arts Society,” Mr Knuth said.

“It is great to be able to congratulate Miss Roger-Jones not only for her work as CDEC but also her dedication to the community.”

Members of the Mareeba Men’s Shed will now have an easier time getting into the workshop after the recent construction of a concreted and covered shade area.

BY RHYS THOMAS THE Mareeba Men’s Shed disabled members will now be able to stay out of the rain and weather with the recent construction of a covered area in front of the entrance to their workshop.

The Mount Emerald Wind Farm presented the Mareeba Men’s Shed with a $7000 grant that was put towards procuring and erecting the new covered area, the materi-

als were purchased from local supplier FNQ Shade n Shelter.

The covered area will give the shed’s disabled members protection from the elements while they enter and exit the shed.

Ergon Energy also decided to surprise the Men’s Shed with a $1500 grant which enabled them to finish the concreting required for the new covered area.

Mareeba Men’s Shed Secretary Roland Hill is very ex-

cited for this new project to be complete and to better assist with the sheds disabled members ease of access to the shed.

“It feels great to be given the money to do these upgrades,” he said.

“The benefits of the new covered area will be felt by all members of the shed.

“We are very happy that the Mount Emerald Wind Farm gave us the money to do these upgrades.”

Next on the agenda for

the Mareeba Men’s shed is the erection of a wall running along the boundary to the next property.

In the wet season rain runs off the adjacent property and floods the sheds area making it very difficult for the members.

Now courtesy of the Mareeba Lions Club, plans to build the wall to stop water run off can begin soon. The members will then reroute the water to run straight into the Barron River.

William’s retirement project comes to life

THE long anticipated Cape Gateway Motel swung open its doors last Wednesday for its official opening with the chefs and the café already being put to work.

The Cape Gateway Motel has been under construction since late last year being headed

by Mareeba local and familiar face, Greg Williams.

Mr Williams has been working on this project for many years being a major part behind the development and planning of Mareeba’s newest motel.

Now after officially opening he is happy that he can take a step back and let his professional fully trained staff lead the motel.

“I am really looking forward to taking a step back now and letting my staff do what they are trained to do and run the motel and all of it amenities,” he said.

“I believe that Mareeba is in a unique position as it is one of the fastest growing towns in Queensland.

“The town is vibrant and I think the town is ready for a facility like the Cape Gateway Motel.”

ANOTHER cassowary has been killed along the Kuranda Range with Elvis the cassowary now losing all four of his chicks to vehicle strikes.

The accident happened around midday Thursday, June 2, on the same stretch of Kennedy Highway where the other three chicks were also killed by vehicle strikes.

According to Queensland Police “Human impact contributes to approximately 80 per cent of cassowary deaths in the Far North, with the major cause being vehicle collisions.”

These school holidays Far North Police are reminding motorists to be cass-O-wary while driving in the tropics.

“As COVID-19 restrictions slowly ease more and more people are on the roads, we are reminding everyone to take care in cassowary country.”

“Not only are cassowaries an incredible tourist draw card, but most importantly they contribute to the health of our rainforests.

“With only a couple thou-

sand cassowaries left in the wild, it is our responsibility to take the necessary precautions when driving around the far north.”

Police have issued the following advice to people if they see a cassowary: • Never approach a cassowary • Never approach chicks – male cassowaries will defend them • Never feed cassowaries – it is illegal, dangerous and has caused southern cassowary deaths • Always discard food scraps in closed bins and ensure compost bins have secure lids • Slow down when driving in cassowary territory • Never stop your vehicle to look at southern cassowaries on the road If you are travelling through the Far North and come across an injured or struggling cassowary, please report the sighting to the Department of Environment and Science on 1300 130 372.

The grants are available for dairy farming businesses to upgrade equipment to reduce energy consumption, invest in monitoring systems to better manage energy use, and to investigate other energy efficient activities.

The Energy Efficient Communities Program was announced as part of the Government's Climate Solutions Package and $10 million is specifically available for dairy farmers.

Energy use in milk cooling, milk harvesting and hot water production is one of their highest overheads in the dairy industry, costing dairy farmers as much as $12,800 per 100 cows each year.

Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud said, “Supporting the longterm sustainability of our dairy farmers is critical to the sustainability of regional Australia and our food security.

“Dairy farmers are in a price squeeze from an imbalanced market, but thanks to this grants and energy efficiency upgrade program, they will be able to keep more money in their pocket.”

To ensure equal distribution

funding will be available in each state in proportion to the number of dairy farms.

Millaa Millaa dairy farmer and District Chairman for the Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation James Geraghty says that the money will give farmers a great opportunity to invest into infrastructure on their farms.

“This money can be used for solar and energy efficient hot water production,” he said.

“This has the potential to make a huge difference to our bottom line.

“A lot of farmers are putting solar in, especially in SE Queensland every pump shed has solar on it.”

Mr Geraghty said that any help for the dairy industry is gladly welcomed and that most farmers were still hurting financially.

“We need a more profitable industry, either an increase from the price of milk or a lowering of our operating costs,” “We just had a price rise for milk and we were glad to get that, but the rise in the price of molasses is multiple times more than the price increase in milk that we just got.”

Locals eligible for home resilience funding HOUSEHOLD RESILIENCE: Joel hilditch from Joel’s Plumbing Services is encouraging locals to get behind a new government grant that could see them having their old roof replaced.

BY RHYS THOMAS LOCAL residents will be eligible to get a share in a $21.25 million government program to repair or improve their windows, doors and roofs to be better prepared against cyclones.

The Household Resilience Program is part of the first stage of Queensland’s economic reset to help the state recover from the effects of COVID-19.

The program provides funding to help eligible home owners improve the resilience of their homes against cyclones by improving or completely replacing their windows, doors and roofing.

Owner-occupiers who live in

a house built before 1984 and are located within 50km of the coastline (as the crow flies) can apply to receive a government grant that pays for 75% of the cost of improvements up to $11,250.

Successful applicants must pay the remainder 25% directly to the contractor who must be approved by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission.

To be eligible for the government funding the weekly household income must be less than $1,006 for an individual, $1,391 for a couple, $1,392 for a sole parent with one child and $1,724 for a couple with one child, there is also an additional $333 for each dependent child in the

household and $384 for each additional dependant adult.

Joel Hilditch from Joel’s Plumbing Services encourages eligible residents to apply for this program as they can get a new roof for nearly free.

“Because we are in a cyclone prone area you really don’t want your roof flying off during one because it isn’t up to scratch,” he said.

“A lot of the older roofs around the area really do need these upgrades to get them up to standards and cyclone proofed.

“This program helps out the everyday person just trying to improve their houses and their own saftey.”

The application process for

this funding runs in two stages, the first is to see if you are eligible after meeting the criteria and income requirements. In the second stage applicants will need to provide itemised and quantified quotes for the proposed upgrades.

After your application and supporting documents have been processed a qualified assessor will attend your home to confirm that the proposed improvements are reasonable.

Andrea delivers the mail to Millaa Millaa, Ravenshoe, Malanda, the falls circuit, Mungali and most places in between.

Andrea says after 20 years she still loves doing the job.

The theme was ‘Patterns in Nature’. The image was captured using my Samsung 8 in February this year on my regular walk along the hiking track at the Mossman Gorge. I’d actually kicked over the log that they were growing on before discovering them.

“I love the job, I like being in the car I like driving, I get to meet people and I get to talk to most of them,” she said.

Andrea said that she is excited about adding a new item to her delivery list.

“I have been delivering papers for locals for a few years and now I’m going to be delivering The Express every week to my customers,” “People love getting a paper every week and staying in touch.”

Andrea says even though she loves her job there are a few downsides.

“The worst day on the job

was straight after Cyclone Larry, I probably shouldn’t have been driving that day, but I did, she said.

“The only other problem is when you get snakes and spiders in people letterbox, that’s always a fright.”

Andrea also said that she is not planning on stopping anytime soon.

“I’m only halfway through this tender contract and I’m planning on applying for the next tender when it becomes available, so I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.”

New alliance to tackle feral pigs A new alliance has been formed to try and tackle the feral pigs problem.

THREE local NRM organisations that cover North Queensland have come together to join forces and try to tackle the feral pig problem together.

Cape York NRM, Northern Gulf Resource Management Group and Terrain NRM have formed a new body called The North Queensland NRM Alliance.

NQ NRM Alliance Chair Dr Keith Noble says across Australia feral pigs a problem, especially in the wet tropical regions.

“Pigs impact all landscapes including agriculture and conservation lands. They are known to eat turtle and cassowary eggs and we know that they spread weeds and other diseases.” Dr Noble said.

“Feral pigs can pass on foot and mouth disease and they can spread Panama TR4, which threatens Far North Queensland’s banana industry.

“They also disturb water and soil in the wet tropics area

which encourages erosion.

“There are not many things all Australians agree on but we all agree that feral pigs are a problem.”

Dr Noble says that through the joint alliance they have been able to acquire funding and now there are less admin overheads and crossover, meaning their dollars will go further.

“Through a coordinated approach and through a bigger advocacy group for North Queensland we have a much more powerful voice if we can combine all voices.”

It's been estimated that feral pigs cost banana farmers around $4000 and cane farmers around $10,000 each year in destroyed crops, erosion and damage.

Another problem the alliance is trying to tackle is African Swine flu. There are concerns that Swine flu could possibly make its way down from PNG through the Torres Straight Islands, Dr Noble says that if feral

pigs passed it onto Australia’s domestic pigs it would have a devastating effect on the pork Industry.

“The biosecurity risk to the Australian pork industry would be devastating if you have a look at what it has done to overseas markets,” he said.

“Feral pigs are everywhere in Cape York and swine flu doesn’t require pig to pig contact, all it needs is for the feral pigs to eat some thrown away contaminated meat.

“The border is pretty porous around the cape, people are always crossing in little dinghy’s and there’s a lot of exchange between the residents of the Torres Strait islands and PNG. “We have to stop it before it gets into Cape York, because if it made its way onto the mainland there is no way we could stop it.”

Under the new alliance Dr Noble says that Far North Queensland's natural resource management sector is now in a better position to coordinate a regional, strategic, long term, landscape in conjunction with community partners such as indigenous organisations, land and sea managers and local NRM’s.

“One thing we know for sure is that we are never going to eradicate feral pigs. They are here for the long term, so we have to allocate resources appropriately.”

MURAL: Members of the Mareeba PCYC and local kids are working on a new traditional mural that is being painted on the kiosk wall at Firth Park.

New mural for Firth Park FIRTH Park is getting a fresh coat of paint in the form of a traditional mural that is currently being painted by members of the Mareeba PCYC and a Muluridji descended artist.

The PCYC identified that the Mareeba Cricket Kiosk at Firth Park has been the target of graffiti and vandalism for a number of months now and through the Regional Arts Development Fund they were able to start painting one of the walls.

The Regional Arts Development Fund promotes the

role and value of arts, culture and heritage within communities across Queensland.

The PCYC was given the grant from the Mareeba Shire Council and promptly starting work over the school holidays employing the help of local kids and Muluridji descended artist, Sandra Mathieson.

PCYC Mareeba Branch Manager Mary-Anne West is very excited about the mural and hopes it acts as a deterrent to further graffiti and damage.

“We hope the mural will

dissuade people from vandalising the kiosk and increase the sense of ownership and pride,” she said.

“The kids had a creative hand in both the painting of the mural and they came up with the murals idea and meaning.

“The mural represents the Granite Creek and the connection people have with Firth Park.”

The mural is hoped to be completed during the first week of the next school term.

Greengrocer calls it a day Government after 30 years on the road grants to

improve home safety for seniors

AFTER spending the last 30 years delivering groceries to remote farmers and country towns across Queensland, Tolga resident Fariborez ‘Fari” Rameshfa has decided to call it a day.

Last month Mr Rameshfa was awarded an OAM for services to remote communities and in January he was a Queensland Local Hero nominee at the annual Australia Day awards.

Fari migrated to Australia from Iran in 1973, first living in Melbourne and then moving to the Tablelands in 1983.

In 1989 he started delivering fresh fruit and vegetables to people in outback Queensland in his refrigerated truck after seeing a friend in Richmond struggling to buy fresh food.

The day that he arrived was often referred to by locals as 'Fari' day as locals from stations far and wide would patiently wait for the arrival of Fari and his fresh fruit and vegetables.

“At first I started delivering to Charters Towers and then I started getting calls from other towns and properties to deliver fresh fruit and veggies and it grew from there. I was doing 6-7 days per week on the road,” said Mr Rameshfa.

At his peak Fari was travelling over 2400 kms per fortnight to complete his deliveries Starting in Atherton he then drove to Mt Garnett, Greenvale, Charters Towers, Hughenden,

Fari Rameshfa.

Richmond, Julia Creek, and Winton and then back home.

Inside Fari’s truck were eight tonnes of fresh vegetables and fruit like, lettuce, potatoes, bananas, tomatoes, onions and apples, he also carried milk, cheese, bread, smallgoods, newspapers and special requests.

And now after more than 30 years on the road delivering gro-

ceries to some of the states most isolated residents Mr Rameshfa who is now 70, has decided to call it a day.

“I now have a list of jobs to do at home; it’s been very nice of my wife to wait all these years, so now I have to complete her list so I don’t get into further trouble,” he said.

Mr Rameshfa said the thing he will miss the most is the peo-

ple.

“The service I provide, the satisfaction you get from providing a service, the response you get and the appreciation from the people,” he said.

Even though it’s the end of an era Mr Ramshfa has sold the business to a couple who are now continuing the tradition of the travelling greengrocer to remote communities.

SENIOR Queensland residents are being provided with a Seniors and Accessibility Assistance grant to improve home safety or security courtesy of the Queensland Government.

The one off assistance grant of up to $5000 can be used for several different types of repairs and improvements around the home.

The repairs and upgrades can include electrical, plumbing and building works, installation of internal stairs, chair lifts, security doors and screens, necessary modification to kitchens and bathrooms and major repairs like roofing.

Co-ordinator of Home Assist Secure Coleman Doyle thinks that this grant is wonderful for the elderly in the community and is worth applying for.

“The purpose of the grant is to not only help the elderly but also local tradesmen who are sourced for the repairs and upgrades,” he said.

“This is a good government grant as it targets the right things.

“It’s not a limitless amount of money so those who apply first and those with the most urgent repairs will get the money first.”

Hopeful applicants must apply for the grant through Home Assist and they will take care of everything else including sourcing the tradesmen to do the required jobs.

To apply for the governments grant applicants must be 60 years or older or any age with a disability, hold a Pensioner Concession Card, be unable to complete the work themselves because it requires technical expertise or is a risk to their health and safety.

The works must also be unable to be completed through the Commonwealth Home Support Program and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to apply for the Seniors and Accessibility Assistance Grant.

How many serving politicians and bureaucrats in Australia are pushing 100% wind and solar electricity? Thousands, right?

Did you know that not one of them can explain how a modern, 24-hour energy-dependent civilisation can run solely on intermittent, unreliable energy?

Solar generates nothing at night; wind can be fitful, with days-long wind droughts relatively common; where’s electricity come from then?

Batteries, you say? On what date will affordable grid-scale batteries be invented? What will their chemistry be? What about their environmental effects?

Pumped hydro, you say?

You know it consumes a third of the power fed into it, right? Can you show me on a map where the dams would be built? Would greenies agree to their construction?

Did you know we pay $2.5 billion per year as subsidies to wind and solar owners? If they’re “cheaper”, why do they need subsidies? And why have they doubled our power bills?

How can anyone argue there’s not more questions than answers with renewables? Why the urgency to adopt them when it’s so obvious they’re not going to work?

Why are wind and solar being promoted by our public servants (who are paid to be loyal to us) when nuclear beats it easily on every count?

Good news for cane farmers

News that a group of Burdekin cane farmers have reduced fertiliser use without impacting yield shows the worrying gulf between how the Coalition Federal Government and Queensland Labor approach primary production.

A two-year pilot program sponsored by the Federal Government’s Reef Trust and run by the NQ Dry Tropics natural resource management group was able to reduce fertiliser use by 700 tonnes among participants with no reduction in productivity.

This is a great example of practical measures to assist

farmers and the environment.

Even if you’re sceptical about fertiliser’s true impact on the Great Barrier Reef, you can still support anything that helps reduce farm costs – in this instance, about $46 per hectare.

As we’ve seen with Queensland’s ignorant and punitive laws relating to vegetation management, forestry, commercial fishing and reef regulations, Labor uses science to impose so much regulation they struggle to earn a living.

This doesn’t just affect farmers, it affects us all because we all benefit from an agriculture sector that allows farmers to do what they do best without the government holding them back.

It is for these reasons that I helped set up a Senate Inquiry into Queensland Labor’s antifarming reef regulations which use science to hold a big stick over farmers’ heads.

The hearings are scheduled for July 27 and 28 in Brisbane where we will hear from scientists, farming advocacy groups and government bodies about the evidence used to draft the regulations.

Depending on government restrictions, I will also be organising public forums so more people can have their views heard outside of the formal inquiry setting.

The success of this pilot program in the Burdekin is an example of how science should be used by governments in the primary production sector.

It’s not as easy as ABC LAST week the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) announced that around 250 people would lose their jobs in an effort to find savings after budget cuts by the Australian Government.

The public broadcaster said staff would be cut across “every division”, including its newsrooms, radio and TV productions.

During the initial lockdown and job loses inflicted

by COVID-19 some ABC critics asked for immediate job losses at the ABC under the guise of “if all the other commercial news organisations were cutting staff to survive then so should the ABC.” What these critics fail to understand is that the staff at the ABC who are payed for by the government fulfil an import job by educating Australians about bushfires, floods and COVID-19.

In a nutshell these critics wanted ABC staff to become unemployed and get paid by the government to do nothing.

During our current high record unemployment wouldn’t

it be better if people were employed to spread important messages about COVID-19 rather than throwing them on the unemployment heap?

Flicking around the commercial TV networks all I manage to see these days are reality TV shows about building, cooking, singing or dating/marrying complete strangers. Not only is this the dumbing down of Australia it’s also a symptom that commercial TV is dying, as they can no longer afford to finance big budget TV like dramas, current affairs or documentaries.

It’s much cheaper to follow an attention seeking millennial narcissist who wants to be famous for 15 minutes rather than employing actors, writers and producers to make something of substance.

The same goes for commercial radio, which now employs ex reality TV contestants due to their Instagram following rather than their ability to communicate in a meaningful way with the community they live in.

During the horror bushfire season of 2019/20 the ABC

proved its value more than ever when Australians across the country sourced it for upto-date life-saving information.

While Australia was burning the commercial TV networks ran reruns of The Bachelor and Married at first sight.

The ABC has triggered royal commissions to youth in custody, live exports, aged care and the sexual abuse of children by a number of high profile priests. While over at commercial TV land we have 20 complete strangers locked in a house for several weeks.

So while commercial TV, radio and print are all in free fall, why would the government take an axe to the last remaining light on an empty media horizon during the most trying of years?

Because the ABC have been doing their job too well.

Gymnastics gets set to open up again EXCITED:The Mareeba Gymnastics Club will reopen its doors Monday with kids and adults alike eager to get back on the mats.

Golfers shine at championships

THE Mareeba Golf Club held their club championships on June 20 with many of their regular players coming out and vying for the top spots.

With a reasonably good turnout, the players set out from the clubhouse looking to take out the championship.

Mareeba Golf Club Captain Mick Deguara was very happy with the turnout and to see all the players enjoying themselves.

“We were able to return to a more fluid and comfortable way of play after the easing of restrictions,” he said.

“It was really good that we were able to run the event in the

way that we did.

“All in all it was a great day out and we are really happy with the outcome.

After a long day out on the green the championship came to close with the following results.

Men’s club champion went to Lui De Zen and the ladies was won by Karlee Reid.

A Grade Men’s Gross winner was Michael Cade and runner up was Alex Hodi.

A Grade Men’s Net went to Anthony Mete and runner up Grant Cupitt.

A SENSE of normality is slowly returning to the region with many community events and sports starting to slowly ramp back up including local gymnastics.

The Mareeba Gymnastics Club shut their doors on March 23, after following the Federal Governments COVID-19 advice.

Now after months away from the sport, the doors will open once again on Monday, July 13, with all of the coaches following strict hygiene and cleaning

measures and the ‘Safe Return to Gymnastics Guidelines’ which were developed by Gymnastics Queensland.

Mareeba Gymnastics Club Coaching Director Kelly Tulloch is excited for the club to be open again and to see kids and adults back on the mats.

“It was devastating for the club and our members when we had to close but we are excited to now be reopening and welcoming everyone back into the gym,” she said.

“Since we closed we have

had many of our members telling us how much they have missed coming into the club.

“Gymnastics provides so many positive mental and physical health benefits which are more important than ever coming out of isolation.”

The club will be operating with limited classes during the school holiday period to better comply with the Stage 2 Step Down approach for the Roadmap of easing Queensland’s restrictions.

Local race days back on

LOCAL race clubs have confirmed that patrons will be welcomed back to their upcoming race days, after the easing of restrictions across the state.

Racing Queensland (RQ) announced that with the approval of Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young, the raceday restrictions limiting participants to their allocated regions have now been lifted.

As part of COVID-19 restrictions, RQ earlier this year implemented regional racing areas in Queensland and put a ban on patrons at racedays.

In welcome news for racegoers, a limited number of patrons can now enjoy a day at the races again.

The Atherton Turf Club announced their next raceday will be held on Saturday, July 18, with patrons required to book in advance to secure their spot.

Patrons will need to either email promotions@athertonturfclub.com. au or PM their Facebook page with your name, phone number and how many people are attending.

Meanwhile Mareeba Turf Club also annouced at the weekend that their biggest race meet of the year, the Mareeba Annuals, will be held on Saturday, September 5, with bookings also required.

Competitive racing is back COMPETITIVE grass-roots car racing returns to the Tablelands for participants and spectators on Sunday, July 19.

Tableland Competition Car Club (TCCC) will restart its successful race program at the unique Tepon motor speedway facility near Herberton, using COVID 19 guidelines.

TCCC has used the idyllic bush setting of Tepon to host monthly race meetings for almost 50 years, offering a safe and affordable car racing experience for competitors and spectators alike.

Recently, TCCC held a very successful test, tune and practice event at Tepon, with

participants coming from across the Tablelands, Cairns, and Townsville, including an energetic group of kart racers.

TCCC and Tepon Speedway have remained successful over the years because of its focus on offering an affordable local racing experience. The club strives to keep membership fees, admission fees and operating costs as low as possible.

THE Mareeba Junior Gladiators are eager to return to the field after the Cairns District Junior Rugby League (CDJRL) decided to continue with their 2020 season under COVID-19 safe plans.

After the release of stage 3 restrictions, CDJRL made the decision to continue with their season but required teams to have approved COVID-19 safety plans in place.

The Mareeba Junior Gladiators submitted their plan to the Mareeba Shire Council and is currently awaiting approval.

Currently there are three teams in the CDJRL comp who have approved plans and are able to play, Cairns Brothers, Kangaroos and Innisfail Brothers are all ready and eager to play, a July 17 deadline has been set for the remainder of the clubs for their council approved plans.

Mareeba Junior Gladiators President Shaun Fincham is excited to get the kids out on the fields again.

“All the clubs are trying their best to get their teams on the field,” he said.

“You take on positions like president to see kids running around and having fun on the field.

“The kids just want to get out there and rip in.”

The COVID-19 safety plan has been in the works for Mareeba for a while now after following the guidelines and suggestions passed down from their governing bodies.

With the reduced numbers the decision has been made by the CDJRL to only host competitive games from U13’s to U16’s while U6’s to U12’s will

be hosted by individual clubs.

The community support has been overwhelming from not only players and supporters but from the council as well.

“The council is very supportive for us to return to play and they are working on assessing our plan before the deadline,” Mr Fincham said.

“The committee has been working very hard to get this plan out and they have done a wonderful job.

“We are very lucky as they are a great committee.”
