Proud history of supporting the community FOR more than 20 years, Mareeba Leagues Club has been the heart and soul of the community, not just as a social hub but also providing thousands of dollars to local organisations.

Everyone from the Men’s Shed to the local country music club has benefitted from the club’s community spirit.

That support continued recently when Mareeba Leagues Club donated $10,000 to the Qld Drought Appeal through the local QCWA. “It wasn’t a hard decision by the board of directors to support the Drought Appeal,” Mareeba Leagues Club CEO, Lucy Connor, said.

“Mareeba is not as badly affected by drought as many areas but locals have a strong connection with people on the land because of our location, so it is very close to the heart of many people.”

Mrs Connor said the club was well known and respected for its community support, with the latest donation bringing the total for the past 18 months to an impressive $212,380.

“I think it’s fair to say it would be hard to think of a local group which hasn’t benefitted from the club’s generosity in some way over the years,” she said.

“But it’s more than just money, as we provide a lot of in-kind support. Many local groups use our facilities to operate or meet – from the local Lions and Rotary clubs to the Tablelands Music Club, which all use our facilities free of charge.

“We have been major sponsor of the Mareeba Rugby League Club for many years

and also financially support local kayaking, cricket, basketball and golf clubs, as well as local horse racing.

“Our club is a big supporter of The Great Wheelbarrow Race, which is held each year between Mareeba and Chillagoe, and has sponsored numerous teams since its inception.”

Mareeba United Football Club, the Baron River Challenge and the Palma For A Farmer appeal have also been supported

by the club, along with the iconic Mareeba Rodeo.

The Mareeba Men’s Shed has been given donations, as well as project opportunities, and the club is a major supporter of the Mareeba Multicultural Festival that draws thousands of people each year to celebrate the region’s 30-plus cultures.

Local schools use the club’s facilities to train students in hospitality and Mareeba Rotary uses the club’s grounds to teach

defensive driving courses to local high school students annually.

Function space and refreshments are regularly donated to hospital, not for profit, mining and farming organisations while charity cent sales are held for the Leukaemia Foundation and other organisations and the club donates food and labour to help boost many local fundraising efforts.

The Cancer Council’s Relay

for Life is held biannually, with Mareeba Leagues Club not only a major sponsor but also entering a team to help raise funds.

“Mareeba is a great town, a great community and Mareeba Leagues Club loves being part of it and helping when we can,” Mrs Connor said.

“With the support and patronage of our valued members, the Club plans to continue its contributions for a long time to come.”

Mareeba Airport ready for take-off following upgrade completion

Prominent politicians gathered at the Mareeba Airport last week for the official unveiling of Stage 2 of the Mareeba Airport Upgrade. The 23 million dollar development was jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments.

THE second stage of the multimillion dollar Mareeba Airport upgrade was officially opened on Wednesday, with prominent politicians from both the State and Federal Governments on hand to unveil a landmark moment in the history of Mareeba.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the airport started

as a Second World War airstrip, and while it had seen improvements over the years, its full potential could not have been reached without significant assistance to rejuvenate and expand it.

“This is a significant moment for Mareeba Shire and the Far North Queensland region.

The upgrade will see more aviation jobs, training opportunities and a wide range of economic benefits delivered to the Far North.

Representing the Premier, Member for Cook Cynthia Lui joined Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore and other dignitaries at the opening.

“This $23 million project is an investment in Far North Queensland’s regional aviation capabilities and an investment in Mareeba’s future,” Ms Lui said.

“More than 70 construction jobs have been supported across the two stages, but that’s just the start.

“The upgraded airport will create economic flow into Mareeba, the Shire and Tablelands, and support at least 200 jobs as a result.

“I congratulate Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore, the Mareeba Shire Council and local contractor FGF Developments for delivering it.”

Stage 1 was opened in March this year which involved the construction of a new commercial precinct with 52 fully-serviced lots suitable for aviation-related businesses, along with upgrades to surrounding roads, a new airport water main and renewal of airport fencing.

The project was jointly funded by the State and Federal Government.

Cr Nipper Brown to run for MSC Mayor

MSC councillor Nipper Brown has announced that he will be running for Mayor at the next Local Government Elections.

MAREEBA Shire Councillor Nipper Brown has announced that he will be running for mayor at the next Local Government

Elections in March.

Cr Brown, who was born and raised in Julatten, now lives in Mutchilba and has owned and

operated his own business since 2004.

Cr Brown has been serving as councillor for the Mareeba Shire Council for the past six years, and he has described the role as a rewarding one that has been filled with a steep learning curve.

Despite the intensive nature of the job and the enormous responsibility that comes with it, Cr Brown is motivated more than ever to serve the residents of the Mareeba Shire, and noted his inspiration behind his decision to run for mayor.

“Through the mentorship of the current MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore and Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen, I still have the desire to continue to work for the Mareeba Shire and its residents, and I believe I can make a difference,” he said.

“With Tom retiring, I don’t believe there’s the need for a lot of change given the financial framework that has been set.

“And because of that, I believe I’m the best person for the job as I’ve been there for the past six years and I know what’s needed to keep this shire financially stable.”

Cr Brown said if elected as mayor, he will continue to lobby the appropriate bodies to ensure positive outcomes for the shire.

“Key projects I will be lobbying for include the Kuranda Range, Ootan and Chillagoe Roads, along with better healthcare services and greater water security among others,” he said.

“While they are items that are not our core business, they are crucial to the growth and

involved with community and sporting groups with a hands-on approach.

“If that means serving behind the bar, cooking a BBQ or being an act at a variety night I am there on the front line with any group.

“As mayor this work ethic and involvement will continue.

I want all sporting and community clubs to be strong because this will present opportunities

“In addition, I have been on the board of the local tourism body for the past four years and believe we need to explore and develop event tourism further.

Mareeba’s Laurie Tracona was recognised for his propensity to give back as members of community and organisations within the region and interstate gathered at the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club to pay tribute to his life.

Laurie’s legacy lives on

In life and now in death, Mareeba’s Laurie Tracona made a difference to those around him and has left a lasting legacy of giving back to the community and those in need.

LAURENCE “Laurie” Tracona was a valued member of the community whose legacy of giving back will be one that stands the test of time well after his passing.

That was evident last Thursday as a tribute ceremony was held at the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club in honour of Laurie, with a number of people attending to pay tribute and to accept the beneficiaries of Laurie’s estate which he generously donated to a variety of charities, organisations and community groups.

One such beneficiary of Laurie Tracona’s estate was Uniting World, and organisation member Jenny Guyatt spoke about the enormous impact Laurie had on the not-for-profit group.

“Laurie has been a supporter of Uniting World for 14 years today (Thursday),” she said.

“It’s so wonderful to be celebrating his life on the anniversary of when he began to support our work.

“We partner with churches in Asia, Africa and the Pacific, and Lauri was always interested in the work was happening overseas such as climate change, combating domestic violence and the like.

“So the money that he has very generously given to us will be used again in those areas.

“We had no idea he was going to leave this bequest so it was just such a blessing to be given this money, and we will utilise it to further continue the

work that Lauri had supported for 14 years.”

Mareeba’s Carols by Candlelight ready to kick off festive season MAREEBA Turf Club will be abuzz with lights, food, fun and Christmas carols this Sunday with the annual Carols by Candlelight to light up the night sky.

Firefighters battle multiple blazes Dozens of firefighters and water bombing helicopters were on hand over the weekend as there was considerable fire activity around Mareeba and Biboohra.

BUSHFIRES continue to wreak havoc right across the country, and the Tablelands was no exception last week and over the weekend as blazes in and around Mareeba posed a danger to residential areas nearby.

Fire activity in Mareeba began on Thursday as a bushfire on Springs Road and another on Bilwon, Road Biboohra started around the middle of the day.

The fires were made worse as strong south-westerly winds saw the blaze difficult to contain

for the large group of firefighters and water bombing helicopters on hand to fight it.

As a result of the large and unpredictable bushfires that were burning, a Prepare to Leave notice was announced by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) for the Mareeba and Biboohra areas.

That was compounded by another two fires that occurred over the weekend, with a further two fires at Arriga and Southedge.

THE key to the prosperity of any community is the support and continued investment in local business.

With that in mind, there are residents in Atherton who are voicing their dismay about major projects being awarded to firms outside of town.

The works being undertaken along Main Street and on the Local Disaster Coordination Centre are the two projects in question, and one such resident who feels it betrays the number of competent and deserving local contractors currently on the Tablelands is Granville Spencer.

“The Tablelands Regional Council have consistently stated that they’re in favour of hiring locals, yet two of the major projects in town are being handled by out-of-town contractors,” Mr Spencer said.

“Hiring locals does so much for the community, as not only does it create immediate jobs for those who are awarded building and infrastructure contracts, but it also has a flow-on effect and boosts the region’s entire economy as a whole.

“It points back to council going against what they advocate for, which is local government supporting locals.”

Mr Spencer said the issue dates back to the Merriland Hall contract, where there was a significant refurbishment made to the building’s amenities such as improvements to the disability access, restumping of the cafeteria and rerouting a section of power supply underground.

“That was a project that was awarded to a company not from the area and council quickly realised they made the wrong deci-

sion,” he said.

“It ended up costing them a lot more than if they had gone with a local.

“Council need to realise that the businesses and tradesman we have in this area are more than capable of doing a great job.

“In addition to that, they know the region and its conditions extremely well and therefore could bring some building techniques that could improve the overall quality of construction and the speed with which it’s completed.

“Yet they’re still being overlooked.”

Mr Spencer said he is fearful that there could be a number of future projects that also aren’t awarded to local contractors, and he is imploring TRC to make a concerted effort in ensuring a locals-first approach becomes custom.

Mareeba Shire Councillors at The Oaks war marker on the corner of Basalt and Kilpatrick Street, Mareeba.

A NUMBER of Mareeba Shire Councillors (MSC) were on hand to officially unveil the installation of one of the new and improved war markers that can be seen in and around the township.

The installation of 20 new markers is to recognise the sites in Mareeba that supported Australian and US war operations in New Guinea and the South Pacific.

The new markers are durable, recycled plastic posts and will replace the older existing markers which have been deteriorating over time.

This project is jointly funded by the Commonwealth Government Department of Veterans Affairs – Saluting Their Service Commemorations Program and Queensland Government’s Queensland Veterans’ Memorial Grants Program.

When the project was announced in July, MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said The markers are a reminder of the support role the Mareeba community played in defence of northern Australia during the Second World War. “I sincerely thank the Commonwealth and the Queensland Governments for funding this important project to honour and remember our war history,” he said.

Extensive front and rear alterations to both the Nissan Patrol Ti and the Patrol Ti-L have created a sleeker look to the vehicle, complementing its size.

As for the response from the Minister for agriculture her advisors have obviously failed to advise her that sarcasm is not only the lowest form of wit but also the lowest form of intelligence.

Sadly when you look at the decisions being made by the Coalition on behalf of rural Australia and our agricultural industry you very quickly realise that because of populace numbers rural Australia is irrelevant to both major political parties. Gone are the days when the National Party had strong leaders who truly were the voice of agriculture and fought hard for those in the bush. Today if you documented the collective knowledge of both the National and Liberal Politicians in capital letters I doubt if you would fill the back of a postage stamp.

It is an indictment on the majority of our current politicians that your sole objective is PMA at any cost not what is best for the country. This comment is based on the fact that in recent years the National Party has held the balance of power for about seven years and has never had the guts to pull on the Liberal Party to force policy dedicated to support and advance rural Australia.

I like many rural Australians have lived and worked in rural communities all my life and I have always tried to support those parties who introduce good rural policy backed up with genuine support and strong leadership.

Unfortunately due to the National Party totally abandoning their traditional rural voter base we now find that the only people to put Australia ahead of their own selfish ambitions seem to be the minor parties and independents.

In conclusion I would like to provide some dairy production statistics for my home state of Queensland: Prior to deregulation in 1999/2000 Queensland produced 848 million liters and consumed 383 million liters a surplus of some 468 million liters.

Fast forward to 2015/2016 and Queensland produced 405 million liters but consumed 583 million liters a shortfall of some 178 million liters.

God knows what those figures would be today some 4 years on as the demise of our dairy farmers has continued unabated.

A few weeks back the national news showed a dairy farmer of many years standing with tears running down his face as he watched a truck drive away from his farm with his entire dairy herd headed for the abattoir. How politicians can stand idly by whilst this happens is beyond comprehension and sadly it was not the fist time and it won't be the last.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Weekend cricket wrap A GOOD weekend of cricket was played by Mareeba cricket with the senior men’s 2nd Grade battling Barron for a competitive round of cricket.

The Tura Sports 2nd Grade played the first day of a two dayer at Borzi Park and are in a good spot for the second day.

Mareeba came out with a strong bowling attack leaving Barron all out and stranded on a containable 175 runs, Brendan

Johns was the pick of the bowlers with an impressive 4/21 followed by Jett Prien who took 3/19.

Mareeba then got 23 overs to get some runs on the board and thanks to opening batter Jett Prien.

Mareeba are 1/54, with another day to go and plenty of wickets in the shed Mareeba will be looking to capitalize on this start.

Hazel Shannon on Clifford in the last event of the Australian International three day event.

LOCAL Mutchilba resident Hazel Shannon has been ushered into the history books after her recent win at the Australian International three day event.

The event hosted over a November weekend is the country’s premier for equestrian sports and even regards selections for the Olympics.

Mrs Shannon won her division for the third time in a row; a feat of this stature has never been accomplished in the southern hemisphere, until now.

Mrs Shannon is one of only five people in the world to accomplish this feat.

“It’s unreal, it hasn’t really sunk in yet,” she said.

“I would really like to thank my family who has been there for me throughout this entire journey plus my trainer; Heath Ryan.

“I would also like to thank Kerry and Janet Snow the owners of the horse Clifford, without them this wouldn’t have been possible.”

After this stellar achievement Mrs Shannon is looking forward to even greater heights with her sights set upon the Australian Olympic team.

“This event has a lot of contributions toward the Olympic games,” she said.

“My goal is to be selected for the Australian Olympic team.”

JUNIOR basketball in Mareeba ended off with a bang at their recent presentations.

There were roughly 100 kids present to receive awards and remise on a wonderful season gone by.

A Mareeba Basketball Committee spokesperson was thrilled about the season and about a special visitor.

“It’s been a successful sea-

son,” they said.

“Numbers have improved since last year and that’s really good to see.

“The finals were very enjoyable to watch, we had some close games.”

The kids were surprised with a local Mareeba boy who made it big; Junior Albert the current manager for the Brisbane Bullets was up in Cairns for his

team’s game against the Cairns Taipans and wished to visit his old club again.

Mr Albert was very excited to see his hometown club growing and getting stronger.

“A highlight of the weekend is getting back to my hometown and hanging out with the up and coming ballers,” he said.

“Seeing their growing love and passion for the game is re-

ally encouraging.

“It’s good for the kids in Mareeba to see that they can be successful and are not limited by their upbringing.”

Mr Albert also mentioned the possibility of running some clinics in Mareeba during the offseason to further nurture and develop interest for the sport in Mareeba.

Bulls appoint new coaches for 2020

THE Mareeba United Football Club has appointed coaches for the 2020 season.

After a disappointing season, the men’s premier division is looking to field a more competitive side next year with a number of youth hopefuls stepping up. They also hope to retain a number of senior players from this year. The possible return of Nicholas Tallarico in defence will be a huge boost for the club.

Tallarico was out all of last season through injury.

New coach Angelo Tatti, who was assistant to Perry Krakowcysk, last season will take full control of the club’s premier team. His assistant, Mario Terranova will give the team proper management with a true local touch.

The reserve grade coach is the all-conquering Dennis Allen who took the team to the premiership and grand final last year and just fell short of the treble.

The Premier Ladies coach for 2020 will be Marcello Savaglio who will draw on his many years of experience coaching in the men’s division to garner a very talented group of ladies who last year made the semifinals.

The youth division will be coached by none other than Luciano Avolio with his side kick and manager Genio Quintieri.

The duo has a proven track record of developing the youth and will continue in the same vein next season.

It’s great to see players step up and take on coaching roles in the Fillies division with last year’s golden glove winner Eleanor Silver taking on the role.

The Fillies division was one of the success stories of ladies football and they will continue to attract attention this coming season.

The clubs new Technical Director is Sandro Soncin who will be assisted by Andrew Osborne.

MAREEBA State High School student; Leon Grundling will be on his way to Perth in early December to compete in a national championship.

After an impressive showing at the Queensland School State Championships in October Leon qualifies to represent Queensland School at the All School National Championships in three separate field events.

Leon will be competing in Hammer, Shotput and Discus.

Leon threw two personal bests in October; in hammer he threw 52.29m which gained him second place, 14.38m in shotput for second and 55.52m in discus earning him third place and his second personal best.

Leon is extremely happy with this result and is looking forward to Perth.
